Unstoppable Ukrainian metalcore unit SPACE OF VARIATIONS ascend to the next level of mind-bending modern metal on their upcoming, in-your-face full-length, IMAGO, out September 23, 2022. Following their 2019 Napalm Records debut, the XXXXX EP, the unbridled outfit breaks new ground and transcends all expectations with their exciting and undeniably fresh second studio album. IMAGO’s multifaceted, cathartic delivery seamlessly mixes gut-punching hardcore riffs and catastrophic breakdowns with colorful electronics, brutalizing vocals and, at times, trance-like synth – exploring elements of djent, hip-hop and even hyperpop influence along the way. The album’s addictively erratic, emotive atmosphere echoes their spontaneous live performance; having previously toured with modern metal giants JINJER, the four-piece relentlessly smashed European stages while captivating each listener with futuristic stylings reverberating the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, Architects, Norma Jean and LANDMVRKS. Furiously crashing opener “SOMEONE ELSE” sets free the uncompromising spirit ...

SPACE OF VARIATIONS Talk The Power Of New Album “Imago,” Touring Europe and the US: “This Career Growth Came During the Most Difficult Period In Our Homeland. It Is Difficult to Realize And Accept.”

space of variations tour

Space Of Variations  dropped an incredible album in March this year, titled “ Imago “. The Ukrainian metalcore group grabbed attention with their unpredictable songwriting that was fueled with an intense aggression. To drive their themes home, especially surrounding the current war being perpetrated by Russia on Ukraine, the music videos to accompany tracks such as “ Imago ” and “ DNA molecule in a million of dimensions ” use powerful imagery to engage the listener further. The video clips are heavy to watch, but the thought and emotion put into them results in the viewer taking a lot more of that thought and emotion to heart.

The band is currently on a huge Europe and UK tour, sharing the stage with  Within Destruction , Bound In Fear and Earth Caller . Right after this, they’re jetting off to the US to finish off the year on a high note with fellow Ukrainians and metal juggernauts  Jinjer , as well as  Malevolence and  Vended . During all this, the band found some time to answer some questions asked by Sonic Perspectives  writer,  Josh Muncke .

So, hope you’re all doing well! Firstly, for those who may not have had the pleasure of being familiar with you just yet, can you give me a quick sentence about what you’re all about?

We are a band from Ukraine that plays heavy music. We believe that the concept of the band is encoded in our name. We are a field of different emotions, genre variations.

Space of Variations performing live

Your take on metal is something insanely unique. For me, it’s the confidence that bursts out of your music when you lean into any style, whether it be the more electronic, or more metalcore side of things. What did you want to accomplish for yourselves when you were writing your new album “Imago”?

We wanted each song to differ from each other in terms of vibe, emotion and content. We don’t want to play by genre standards. We want to be outside the box and go beyond even our own understanding of things.

The music videos you’ve put out with your recent singles are so intense, especially your latest single “DNA molecule in a million of dimensions”. I got goosebumps; it’s truly a visual and sonic experience. How do you go about conceptualizing a video like this? How much creative space does director Tymofii Kasatkin have to move around when producing it?

In this particular video, Tima had a lot of creative space and made everything very cool. We got together, discussed how it should look in general, and Tima came up with different scenes and showed us. Everything always goes through the censorship of the whole band. We make 90% of our videos ourselves. For us, this is an important part of creativity that continues our music. Completes our worlds. We do mostly everything ourselves, from the concept to the clothes, make-up, editing and vfx.

This track, as well as title track “Imago”, are especially heavy considering their direct subject matter and the circumstances surrounding Ukraine. How did it feel to release these tracks into the world?

space of variations tour

We filmed the Imago video a few days before the war started. Tima edited it and did the vfx under air sirens and explosions. It’s hard to put into words. Everything that is happening now is a very surreal reality. Unfortunately we are in it. The only option for us is to only become stronger from this.

What are you hoping that the people will feel or experience when listening to the tracks, or watching these videos?

I hope that they will feel a deep connection with these notes, sounds and words and this will help them understand that they are not alone in their thoughts, in their vision of the world. If I managed to shout to something deep in them – this is a success. That’s what I’m here for. I want people to feel strong and deep emotions from our music

Dmytro, you sound like you’re giving all of your emotion into each track, and that’s displayed with a lot of variation which is incredibly impressive. Did you start your vocal career as a clean singer, or extreme vocalist?

From the very beginning I was an extreme vocalist. Over time, I tried to become better, but I had my ups and downs. On this album, I sing with a clean voice the most I ever have during my entire musical experience and I get a lot of pleasure from it.

How long have you been developing your voice? Are there any influences you’ve looked up to during your development?

space of variations tour

Oh. I think there is no end to this process. The longer you live, the more you learn. Different parts, different lines. Your body changes through the years, your mindset changes. It is always a life-long journey.   I have no references as to who I would like to sound like. I want to sound organic to my nature.

The production on “Imago” is full to the brim with energy, but it’s still crystal clear and dynamic as hell. How much time and dedication was spent dialling in all the little nuances and layers until the band was happy to say “it’s ready”?

It took a long time. There were many versions of the sound, but in the end we are very happy with the sound that came out on the album. We’re grateful to Roman Bondar from the Kyiv studio Lizard Audio for this awesome sound!

What are you all most proud of about this album, be it the production, the message, the performances or anything else?

There are many things on this album that we are proud of. It seems to us that the album sounds quite unique. This is our best work so far. The best songs, our best videos, the deepest lyrics, the most honest opinions. We put everything we had into this album. I hope people will hear it.

Throughout this year you planned to perform across Ukraine with Grayshapes and Sick Solution. How important was it for you as a group to make this happen, to see your fans at home?

space of variations tour

The problem is that we do not demand to hold this tour because of the war. This is terrible. After our victory we will do it and we will celebrate life.

I’m sure you guys must be super excited about the tour with Within Destruction, Bound In Fear and Earth Caller across Europe and the UK. After that, you’re heading over the US to tour with fellow Ukrainians Jinjer! As well as P.O.D., Vended and Malevolence of course. When it was decided that you were joining Jinjer again, but on this huge tour to the US, what did it mean for you as a band, and also personally?

It was decided somewhere in the middle of the summer, but we did not know whether we would be released abroad or not. Everything went well. It’s been a dream of my life to play a tour in the states. The same for all members of the band. Now this dream has become a reality. This is definitely a new level for us. On the other hand, this career growth came during the most difficult period in our homeland. It is difficult to realize and accept.

Last question and I’ll let you go! In three words, describe the experience you’re going to give to your fans across the EU, UK, and the US on these tours?

Many people say that to fully understand us, you need to attend our live performance. It will be heavy, emotional and hypnotic. We are here for pure energy!

Local News | Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble to perform at SPACE next week

Don Was is bringing his Pan-Detroit Ensemble to SPACE in Evanston for two performances on May 22. (Photo by Miryam Ramos)

Was will be playing bass and leading his new band when he brings Don Was & The Pan-Detroit Ensemble to SPACE, 1245 Chicago Ave., Evanston, for performances at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on May 22.

Was decided to put together this new band after getting an offer from a friend, Terence Blanchard, who curates a series at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra of Detroit-flavored jazz.

“Last October I gathered a group of musicians together,” Was said. “I knew all of them so it wasn’t that risky a proposition. Something crazy happened when we all got together. We all spoke the same language musically.”

It worked so well that Was thought it would be a shame to put it together for only one performance so they booked a tour from May 21 through June 2. In addition to Detroit and Evanston, it will take them to Minneapolis; Cincinnati; Cumberland, Maryland; Red Bank, New Jersey; New York City; Washington DC, and Ardmore, Pennsylvania. They are currently planning a second tour.

The band members are Dave McMurray (sax), Luis Resto (keyboards), Vincent Chandler (trombone), Wayne Gerard (guitar), John Douglas (trumpet), Jeff Canaday (drums), Mahindi Masai (percussion), and Steffanie Christi’an (vocals).

Saxophonist Dave McMurray is a Blue Note Records artist. He said that he met Was around 1982.

“We hit if off immediately,” McMurray said. “He’s always had a different point of view. Everything was opposite of what everybody else was doing.”

McMurray noted that he has played with Was on and off since they met. Once Was lured McMurray from Detroit to Los Angeles to play with the Rolling Stones.

Performing with Was is always an amazing experience, McMurray indicated, “He had kind of a vision. Every time it was like a traveling circus. It was cool to play because everybody got a chance to get their thing in—do what they do.”

The band performs the distinctly Detroit sound which Was described as “a certain raw, unpretentiousness to the music.”

McMurray described the Ensemble’s style as “unique. The song selection is very different—from rock to country.”

The SPACE concert will include a mix of original songs, familiar Was songs, movie scores, a couple of Grateful Dead songs and more.

As for the sound of The Pan-Detroit Ensemble, “It’s kind of jazzy but it’s got a funk groove running underneath it. It’s not smooth jazz,” Was explained. “It’s pretty raw. Our main goal is to make sure that the audience comes out of there feeling better than when they went in.”

Was’ career sounds like a juggling act but he explained that he learned a lesson about how to do that successfully when he interviewed Frank Sinatra in the 1960s.

“At that time, he was getting up at 5:30 in the morning to film a movie,” Was related. “He would leave the set late afternoon and go to the studio and record a song and then jump on a plane and go to appear with the Rat Pack.”

When Was asked Sinatra how he does all those things, the entertainer told him, “Wherever you are be there 100%.”

One of the surprising additions to Was’ schedule is serving as the voice of Neville the Dog for the hit Amazon Prime Video children’s show, “Pete the Cat.”

Was said he agreed to do that for the adventure.

“It’s a brand new experience,” he said. “The weird thing is that I just did it because it seemed like it would be a fun new thing to try. But that cartoon penetrated the culture more deeply than most of the records I worked on. The proof of it came when I was in Nashville and someone came up to me backstage and asked me to sign the ticket.”

Was started to write his name when the person interrupted him and said, “No, I want you to sign it as Neville the Dog,” he recalled.

It’s a role that Was definitely embraces, revealing he calls young children of friends as the voice of Neville the Dog.

He won’t be dogging it on May 22, though.

Tickets to Don Was & The Pan-Detroit Ensemble are $35-$80. Call 847-492-8860 or visit evanstonspace.com.

Super-Earth exoplanet 55 Cancri e (artist’s concept)

Webb hints at atmosphere around rocky exoplanet

Researchers using the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope may have detected atmospheric gases surrounding 55 Cancri e, a hot rocky exoplanet 41 light-years from Earth. This is the best evidence to date for the existence of a rocky planet atmosphere outside our Solar System.

Super-Earth exoplanet 55 Cancri e (artist’s concept)

Renyu Hu from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, USA, is the lead author of a paper published today in Nature. “Webb is pushing the frontiers of exoplanet characterisation to rocky planets,” Renyu said. “It is truly enabling a new type of science.”

Super-hot super-Earth 55 Cancri e

Super-Earth exoplanet 55 Cancri e (secondary eclipse light curve)

55 Cancri e is one of five known planets orbiting a Sun-like star in the constellation Cancer. With a diameter nearly twice that of Earth and a density slightly greater, the planet is classified as a super-Earth: larger than Earth, smaller than Neptune, and likely similar in composition to the rocky planets in our Solar System.

To describe 55 Cancri e as rocky, however, could give the wrong impression. The planet orbits so close to its star (about 2.25 million km, or one twenty-fifth of the distance between Mercury and the Sun) that its surface is likely to be molten – a bubbling ocean of magma. In such a tight orbit, the planet is also likely to be tidally locked, with a day-side that faces the star at all times and a night-side in perpetual darkness.

In spite of numerous observations since it was discovered to transit in 2011, the question of whether or not 55 Cancri e has an atmosphere – or even could have one, given its high temperature and the continuous onslaught of stellar radiation and wind from its star – has gone unanswered.

“I’ve worked on this planet for more than a decade,” said Diana Dragomir, an exoplanet researcher at the University of New Mexico in the USA and a co-author of the study. “It’s been really frustrating that none of the observations we’ve been getting have robustly solved these mysteries. I am thrilled that we are finally getting some answers!”

Unlike gas-giant atmospheres, which are relatively easy to spot (the first was detected by the NASA/ESA  Hubble Space Telescope  more than two decades ago), thinner and denser atmospheres surrounding rocky planets have remained elusive.

Previous studies of 55 Cancri e using data from NASA’s now-retired Spitzer Space Telescope suggested the presence of a substantial atmosphere rich in volatiles (molecules that occur in gas form on Earth) like oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. But researchers could not rule out another possibility: that the planet is bare, save for a tenuous shroud of vaporised rock, rich in elements like silicon, iron, aluminium, and calcium. “The planet is so hot that some of the molten rock should evaporate,” explained Renyu.

Measuring subtle variations in infrared colours

Super-Earth exoplanet 55 Cancri e (emission spectrum)

To distinguish between the two possibilities, the team used Webb’s NIRCam ( Near-Infrared Camera ) and MIRI ( Mid-Infrared Instrument ) to measure 4- to 12-micron infrared light coming from the planet.

Although Webb cannot capture a direct image of 55 Cancri e, it can measure subtle changes in the light from the whole system as the planet orbits the star.

By subtracting the brightness during the secondary eclipse, when the planet is behind the star (starlight only), from the brightness when the planet is right beside the star (light from the star and planet combined), the team was able to calculate the amount of various wavelengths of infrared light coming from the day-side of the planet.

This method, known as secondary eclipse spectroscopy, is similar to that used by other research teams to search for atmospheres on other rocky exoplanets, like  TRAPPIST-1 b .

Cooler than expected

The first indication that 55 Cancri e could have a substantial atmosphere came from temperature measurements based on its thermal emission, the heat energy given off in the form of infrared light. If the planet is covered in dark molten rock with a thin veil of vaporised rock, or has no atmosphere at all, the day-side should be around 2200 degrees Celsius.

“Instead, the MIRI data showed a relatively low temperature of about 1540 degrees Celsius,” said Renyu. “This is a very strong indication that energy is being distributed from the dayside to the nightside, most likely by a volatile-rich atmosphere.” While currents of lava can carry some heat around to the nightside, they cannot move it efficiently enough to explain the cooling effect.

When the team looked at the NIRCam data, they saw patterns consistent with a volatile-rich atmosphere. “We see evidence of a dip in the spectrum between 4 and 5 microns – less of this light is reaching the telescope,” explained co-author Aaron Bello-Arufe, also from JPL. “This suggests the presence of an atmosphere containing carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide, both of which absorb these wavelengths of light.” A planet with no atmosphere or only vaporised rock in an atmosphere would not have this specific spectral feature.

“This is exciting news,” said co-author Yamila Miguel from Leiden Observatory and the Netherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON), both in the Netherlands. “We’ve spent the last ten years modelling different scenarios, trying to imagine what this world might look like. Finally getting some confirmation of our work is priceless!”

Bubbling magma ocean

The team thinks that the gases blanketing 55 Cancri e would be bubbling out from the interior, rather than being present since the planet’s formation. “The primary atmosphere would be long gone because of the high temperature and intense radiation from the star,” said Aaron. “This would be a secondary atmosphere that is continuously replenished by the magma ocean. Magma is not only crystals and liquid rock, there’s a lot of dissolved gas in it, too.”

In all likelihood, any atmosphere surrounding the planet would be more complex and quite variable as a result of interactions with the magma ocean. In addition to carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide, there could be gases like nitrogen, water vapour, sulphur dioxide, some vaporised rock, and even short-lived clouds made of tiny droplets of lava condensed from the air.

While 55 Cancri e is far too hot to be habitable, researchers think it could provide a unique window for studying interactions between the atmospheres, surfaces and interiors of rocky planets, and perhaps provide insights into the early Earth, Venus and Mars, which are thought to have been covered in magma oceans in the past. “Ultimately, we want to understand what conditions make it possible for a rocky planet to sustain a gas-rich atmosphere, a key ingredient for a habitable planet,” said Renyu.

This research was conducted as part of Webb’s General Observers (GO) Program 1952. Analysis of additional secondary eclipse observations of 55 Cancri e are currently in progress. In the future, the team hopes to capture a full phase curve with Webb in order to map temperature differences from one side of the planet to the other, to get a better sense of the planet’s weather, climate and more detailed atmospheric conditions.

More information Webb  is the largest, most powerful telescope ever launched into space. Under an international collaboration agreement, ESA provided the telescope’s launch service, using the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. Working with partners, ESA was responsible for the development and qualification of Ariane 5 adaptations for the Webb mission and for the procurement of the launch service by Arianespace. ESA also provided the workhorse spectrograph  NIRSpec  and 50% of the mid-infrared instrument  MIRI , which was designed and built by a consortium of nationally funded European Institutes (The MIRI European Consortium) in partnership with JPL and the University of Arizona.

Webb is an international partnership between NASA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

PGA Championship 2024: Tiger Woods speaks on the PGA Tour's leadership drama

L OUISVILLE — The professional game’s civil war continues to suck a considerable amount of oxygen in the golf space, and the majors have proved no respite from the conflict. That includes this week, as Jimmy Dunne—one of the architects behind the PGA Tour’s surprise and controversial agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund— resigned from his position with the tour’s policy board, citing a lack of “meaningful progress” on a deal and believing his role had become “superfluous.” But one man in the heart of the schism’s fire had no appetite for fanning those flames any further.

That would be Tiger Woods. Despite his limited playing schedule the 15-time major winner continues to be golf’s predominant figure inside the ropes and out. Last year Woods was given a permanent role on the policy board, the result of a petition from tour players seeking new governance and transparency measures following the June 6 agreement. His position has only been strengthened in the ensuing year, as Woods was named vice chairman of the newly created, for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises and is one of the few individuals chosen to the transaction team that will be negotiating with PIF.

However, Woods is notorious for playing things close to the vest, and that was no different in his meeting with the media on Tuesday ahead of the PGA Championship. Woods did not agree with Dunne’s statement about the lack of progress, yet did not offer any details or clarification on the matter.

“I think we're working on negotiations with PIF. It's ongoing. It's fluid. It changes day-to-day,” Woods said. “Has there been progress? Yes. But it's an ongoing negotiation, so a lot of work ahead for all of us with this process, and so we're making steps and it may not be giant steps, but we're making steps.”

Woods was then asked what specific things are holding up a potential deal and offered no comment. When a follow-up inquired if he had a personal desire to partner with Saudi Arabia, Woods replied, “I'm personally involved in the process.”

Woods did say he was surprised by Dunne’s decision and timing, and was complimentary of Dunne’s work, calling it “incredible” and “great.” But as for Dunne’s insinuation that the players now held too much control, Woods hit back.

“The PGA Tour is for the players and by the players,” Woods said. “So, we have an influence and there's roles for the player directors and there's roles for the independents. We're trying to make the PGA Tour the best it can be day-in and day-out. That's one of the reasons why we have arguments and we have disagreements, but we want to do what's best for everyone in golf and the tour. Without those kind of conflicts I don't think there's going to be that much … the progress is not going to be there. So it's been good.”

Dunne’s resignation comes less than a week after Rory McIlroy acknowledged his bid to rejoin the policy board was blocked by a subset of board members, although McIlroy was later named to the tour’s transaction team. Towards the end of his press conference, Woods was asked if the constant drama was hurting golf’s relationship with fans.

“I think the fans are probably as tired as we are of the talk of not being about the game of golf and about not being about the players,” Woods said. “It's about what LIV is doing, what we're doing, players coming back, players leaving, the fans just want to see us play together. How do we get there is to be determined.”
