Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

  • December 27, 2017

Researching our trip to Bolivia’s enigmatic and beautiful Parque Nacional Torotoro, the only thing we could find less information on than the journey to the town itself, was how exactly the tours of the park worked.

After hours online, speaking to several people and receiving different information every time, we decided to do the ungraceful thing and go find out for ourselves.

What follows is a straightforward (hopefully) no-frills, no-thrills guide to the tours of Tototoro (try saying that 3 times fast).

Table of Contents

From cochabamba to torotoro:, accommodation in torotoro:, entry to the park:, hiring a guide:, umajalanta caverns:, ciudad de itas:, the vergal:.

Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

It doesn’t matter where in the world (or Bolivia) you’re coming from, your first task is to get yourself to Cochabamba.

From here, unless you plan to stay in Cochabamba, which we decided against, the final leg of the journey is a 5-hour, ass-pounding bumpy, drive in collectivo to Torotoro.

Collectivos to Torotoro leave from the corner of Avenida República y Vallegrande. To reach the Avenida, you can grab any collectivo from outside the terminal, or endure the 20-minute walk. Just be sure to grab some water, Cochabamba is hot, even at 8 a.m., and especially with a big ass backpack!

Exit the main entrance of the terminal and take a right. There will be a number of junctions, just stay straight down the middle. If you’re in doubt asking locals for directions works a treat here. The Cochabambans (I just made that up) are so lovely and always willing to give you their time. Once you reach the Avenida, you will soon see the large orange signs screaming for your attention.

Collectivos leave when full, or a minimum of 7 people (full is only 8), be prepared to wait at least an hour or two. The journey costs 35B (€4.50) but we haggled them down to 30B (€3.50). It usually takes 5 hours, we say usually, because we left at 12 pm and thanks to construction, we didn’t arrive until 6 pm. Lucky us.

If you’re interested in how to get here from Rurrenabaque or La Paz, as usual, the wonderful Katie Hogan has your back. You can read how we did it here .

We stayed in the Alojamiento Charcas , about five doors down from where the collectivo terminates, in the direction of the plaza. It has a basic kitchen with limited cooking equipment, hot water and at the time we were there, no Wi-Fi. Something they assured me was being fixed.

The lady that runs the place was super friendly and helpful, and at 25B (€3) per person it was an absolute steal.

First and foremost you will need to buy an entry ticket to the park itself. You cannot enter the park without one.

The entry is 100B (€12.50), and you can purchase your entry in the Oficina de Turismo beside the Casa de las Guías .

This ticket is valid for 4 days and entitles you entrance across these 4 days.

If you plan on doing all the tours it’s probably best to purchase this on the morning of your first tour, so as not to lose a day. The office opens at 7 a.m.

Next is that you cannot enter the park without a guide, and you cannot hire a guide without an entry ticket, so once you have bought your entry ticket from the tourist office, head next door to the Casa de las Guías to book your circuito(s) and they’ll assign you a guide.

Each c ircuito costs 100B (€12.50) per group of six, so make sure you are a full group to bring the cost down. This lowers the price of each circuit down to a much more budget-friendly 17B (€2) per person. Although some of the circuitos have extra costs (see choosing a circuito below).

If you are less than 6 people, fear not, you can very easily make up your numbers by searching in a local hostel, market, or bars for other people who will also need a group. Worst case, there are always people hanging around the Casa de las Guías in the mornings.

The Casa de las Guías operates from 7 a.m.-12 pm and 1.30 pm-4.30 pm. Most morning tours start around 7.30 am or 8 am so you will have time to buy your entry and book a tour on the same morning if you arrive before 7 am (expect queues).

It’s important to note, that the guides speak Spanish or Quechua. Not a word of anything else, which is weird in my opinion, especially considering they have to go to college for four years to become tour guides. So if you don’t “spreckenzie Spanish”, try to go with someone who does.

Choosing A Circuito:

There are a few circuitos to choose from depending on your available time, budget, fitness level and interests. This is what makes Torotoro so interesting. You can tailor-make your own itinerary within the confines of your 4-day ticket.

Each circuit takes 4/5 hours (half a day) to complete, has various sights to see, and costs 100B per group, as said before.

Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

The most popular circuits include:

The Umajalanta Caverns circuito, does come with additional transport costs of 150B (€18.50) per group (which you can avoid paying if you have your own transport), as well as 12B (€1.50) per person for gear rental (helmet and headlamp which is essential). On this circuit you will see some pretty well-pronounced dinosaur footprints, actually, these were the best ones we saw throughout our two days at Torotoro.

Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

The caverns are a 3-4 km underground odyssey. A climbing, dropping, scaling, and crawling adventure that will awaken your inner spelunker (yes, there’s a word for it). Our guide deftly led the way through the tunnels in FLIP-FLOPS, (putting us all to shame) stopping to show us and explain any points of interest.

Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

You will see stalagmite and stalactite formations in various shapes and sizes, including a Christmas tree, the sorting hat from Harry Potter, a baby and a severed finger!

Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

If you’re claustrophobic the caves will be difficult for you, but not impossible. I’m not great with small spaces, and there were a few points when I thought I might vomit… But I made it unharmed, alive and in one piece, and so will you champ, I believe in you.

The Ciudad de Itas circuito, also has a 150B transport cost (€18.50) per group . On this tour you will see strange arched rock formations and caves resembling an ancient city and gothic cathedral, cave paintings and dinosaur footprints. We didn’t make the Ciudad ourselves but everyone we spoke to raved about it. Although they did say to check the weather and make sure you get a clear day to make the most of the experience.

The Vergel circuito has no additional transport costs, but this comes at the cost of your legs and butt. The tour started with a walk out of town along the river to see the dinosaur footprints. To be honest, this part of the tour was both overrated and could have been done DIY. Just follow the main road out of town until you see the river and then walk along its banks. The footprints should be on your right and the river on your left.

Next up was an 8km round hike to and through the beautiful 200m deep 10km long Chiflón canyon, stopping at the viewing platform for some breathtaking (if not stomach-churning) shots, before descending the 800 steps to the bottom.

Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

It was here we caught a glimpse of a giant condor, with its hella impressive 3 to 4-metre wingspan, something I’ve always wanted to see in person! Unfortunately, he caught us by surprise so I wasn’t able to get a photo. D’oh! But apparently, it’s not uncommon to see them float gracefully through the canyon.

Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

Once in the canyon, our guide led us to the Vergel waterfalls, stopping along the way to point out various plants and their uses, among which were plants for hair treatments, diets, making rope and even hallucinogens. The falls themselves are picturesque cascades free flowing into crystal clear pools of water at testicle retracting temperatures. We were given about an hour to chill, eat and swim, before making the long trek back to the top. Yes, we had to do the 800 steps back up, my legs hurt even writing this.

Bolivia: A Simple Guide To The Tours of Torotoro National Park

Our Suggested Itinerary:

If you’re pressed for time we recommend you combine the Cavernas and the Ciudad de Itas tours. They are the two most popular tours, and you can easily do both in one day. In fact, combining them will cut down on your transport costs.

Cost per person: 102B (€13 / $15US)*

*based on a group of 6 people and includes an entry fee to park.

The Vergel tour combines the canyon and the waterfall. Technically it’s longer than a half day as it takes about 6/7 hours to complete. We did this tour in the morning and, on the same day, the caves in the afternoon. Although it was doable, we felt under pressure to make it back to the office for the second tour. That’s why we’re recommending that you do this tour in the morning and instead dedicate the whole day to it.

Cost per person: 16B (€2 / $2.50)*

*Based on a group of 6 people, the entry fee to the park is still valid within your 4-day ticket.

There are other circuits available if you want to do a third day but they mostly revolve around hiking and compared to the others, we didn’t hear anything amazing about them. So to quote every politician (ever!) we have, “no comment”.

Visiting Torotoro National Park Bolivia: The Ultimate Guide!

Filled with stunning nature and incredible natural history, visiting Torotoro National Park Bolivia should be top of your list on your trip to Bolivia .

About Torotoro

Torotoro National Park was given UNESCO world heritage status in December 2019. With previous difficulties getting to Torotoro (more on this fun later) and with the C-word in 2020 (shhh) even since the UNESCO world heritage status Torotoro remains an untouched gem. I was genuinely shocked by the beauty compared to how little it is known.

me visiting torotoro national park bolivia

Torotoro National Park is next to Torotoro town. The town itself used to be a small village but has grown a lot because of the rise of tourism in the region. It is quite remote and has stunning countryside around it. Torotoro town has really embraced its history of dinosaurs so has lots of dinosaur statues all over the town.

Why Visit Torotoro National Park

Torotoro is home to the dinosaur, well, not literally. It is home to many Dinosaur footprints. The footprints that you can visit are 65 million years old, quite mind boggling really. As well as dinosaur footprints dotted around, there are many other amazing things in this park! Torotoro National park is home one of Bolivia’s largest cave, an incredibly stunning canyon and beautiful scenery.

Where to stay in Torotoro

Torotoro is quite a small town but there are few options depending on your budget. The accommodations tend to be pretty simple but comfy. I stayed in Hostel Wilma and quite liked it. Another option that looked good is Hostal Claure.

Where to Eat in Torotoro National Park

There is a food court in the centre of Torotoro town that has lots of options. All of the food is local and is the cheapest food you will find. One lunch time I had a meal that was really tasty for 5 Bolivianos – brilliant!

There is not a huge amount of restaurants to choose from in Torotoro. Sadly, many restaurants have shut down as a result of the Covid pandemic. Most of the restaurants are in the centre of town and are a lot more expensive than the local food options. I ate in Torotoro Hostal Restaurant and I really liked it, it was made up to look like a cave!

How to get to Torotoro National Park

Now this is hot of the press! I read in many blogs and travel guides that the road between Cochabamba and Torotoro is horrible, bumpy and takes up to 6 hours. However, a brand new road has opened, woop woop! When I visited in May 2022, the road between Cochabamaba and Torotoro was finished and paved apart from the last 30 minutes up to Torotoro town. The last 30 minutes were dsuty and bumpy and to be honest I am glad I wasn’t on a road like that for 6 hours. The journey from Cochabamba to Torotoro in a public bus took me 3.5 hours in total.

toro toro bolivia tours precio

At the moment, Torotoro national park is only accessible from Cochabamaba, There is 1 road in and out. This is why it has not always been the easy to get to in years gone by. If you were to look on a map, you would see that Torotoro is significantly closer to Sucre than Cochabamaba. Sucre is often a natural next stop for a trip to Bolivia. So you might think this would be possible, sadly no. I have heard rumours of a road being under construction from Torotoro to Sucre, if this opens, please let me know in the comments. I think once this road opens Torotoro will become significantly busier (visit now when it’s a hidden gem!).

Collectivo from Cochabamba to Torotoro

The public bus from Cochabamba costs 35 Bolivianos. There is no timetable the bus leaves when there are enough people on it. So you kinda have to try your luck and pray to the travel gods that lots of people want to go at the same time. I personally waited 45 minutes for my bus to fill up but I have heard stories of people waiting a lot longer.

Torotoro Entrance Ticket

The entrance ticket to Torotoro costs 100Bs and is valid for 4 days, bargain. The ticket can be bought from the office in Torotoro town. The guards check the tickets at each entrance point to the park so keep it with you throughout your time in Torotoro.

Visiting Torotoro National Park Bolivia with a Guide

Visiting Torotoro National Park is not allowed without a guide. And to be honest, the paths are not marked at all so a guide is necessary. The guide office is right next door to the permit office. The guides accept groups of up to 6 people. The cost of the guide is the same if it is a group of 1 of 6 people. So the guide office is where you want to get you maximum charm on and try and befriend others doing the same thing.

The local guides do not (yet) speak English, so you can treat it as a free Spanish lesson. If you would like and English speaking guide, you must organise this through a tour office in Cochabamaba with the price tag that comes with it.

Visiting Torotoro National Park Bolivia with a Tour

All inclusive tours from Cochabamba operate to Torotoro. They offer 2 days 1 night including transport and an English-speaking guide. The tours are often full on weekends to the cost is significantly less as it is divided by many people. I tried a tour company for this during the week and was quoted 1200Bs per person (we were 2 people). If I were to do it on a weekend it would be 500Bs. Because of that we decided to do it on our own and it was very easy to do.

toro toro bolivia tours precio

The tours include transport to and from, entrance ticket, accommodation and food. It is significantly cheaper to visit Torotoro without a tour group.

Where to Visit in Torotoro National Park

There are 3 main ‘circuits’ to visit in Torotoro; Vergel, Caverna Umajalanta and Cuidad de Itas. Each circuit takes a half day. Each circuit needs to be accessed using a vehicle so that cost is on top of a guide if you do not have your own transport.

Torotoro National Park 2 day itinerary

It is easy to fit all the main sights in Torotoro National park in 2 days. When visiting Torotoro National Park Bolivia, this is the itinerary I recommend:

Day 1: Travel to Torotoro national park in the morning, visit vergel circuit in the afternoon.

Day 2: Caverna Umajalanta in the morning, Cuidad de Itas in the afternoon. Either travel back to Cochabamba in the evening or stay another night in Torotoro.

Vergel Circuit

The Vergel circuit highlight is the canyon and the waterfall within it. In this circuit, you get stop off at an area that has footprints of at least 5 different dinosaurs. After this, the walk takes you to the ‘Natural Theatre’ which shows layers of rock that are millions of years in the making. In the wet season, this walk is a long a river, in the dry season (when I visited), the riverbed is dry and you can walk along it easily.

toro toro bolivia tours precio

Along the riverbed there are 3 naturally occurring rock bridges. The first is the bridge of marriage because it starts as 2 then becomes 1 (to quote the spice girls). The second is the bridge of divorce because it starts as 1 then splits. The third bridge is called the bridge of reconciliation because it rejoins and there is a heart shaped rock next to it.

After the walk along the river bed, the path brings you to a stunning mirador (view point). It kind of pops up out of nowhere, a view over a very dramatic canyon. This was truly beautiful and there is a walkway that takes you over the canyon to get a great photo.

From this view point, there is a walk down into the canyon which is down many steep steps. The path then goes on through the bottom of the canyon to a lovely waterfall. You can swim in the pool of this waterfall but it was really cold so I didn’t.

toro toro bolivia tours precio

On the way back to the centre there are 2 options to take: back up the steps or walk up the canyon. Our guide presented these options are relatively similar, it turns out they weren’t at all. The walk back up the canyon involved climbing up rocks, wading in knee deep water and quite a steep climb up out of the canyon. It was great fun but definitely more adventurous.

The Carverna Umajalanta

Warning: if you are claustrophobic, I don’t recommend going into the cave. There are points where you must crawl through tight spaces.

Torotoro national park is home to one of Bolivia’s largest caves, Umajalanta. This was my second day visiting the park so I had arranged with friends we had met the day before and the guide we used the day before too.

It was a short 10 minute drive to the drop off point at the beginning of the path. From here it was a quick walk up to the guide point of the cave. On the way, we saw even more dinosaur footprints. At the guide post, we were told to leave our bags and any items we didn’t need. (This also included Milo, the lovely dog I was travelling with at the time). We were given hard hats that had a head torch attached to them too.

If you have visited caves in Europe, normally the visits are on lit walkways and it doesn’t seem adventurous. This is not the case with the cave in Torotoro. The visit involves climbing on rocks, using ropes to climb down and crawling at sections. The surface underneath can get quite slippy so I was glad to have my hiking boots.

At the lowest point in the cave, our guide asked us all to turn our headtorches off. It was darkness like I had never seen. I was waving my hand across my face and I saw absolutely nothing. There is no light that reaches that deep so I was very grateful for my headtorch.

toro toro bolivia tours precio

The way out is the trickier section. There are multiple options but we chose the ‘easiest’. This involved a very tight space for about 1m, this meant we all had to rotate on our side and put our shoulders through and then drag ourselves forward. It then involved about 8m of army crawling. Shout out to military people, it’s hard! It also meant that all of our clothes were dirty so don’t bring anything you don’t mind getting mucky.

Cuidad De Itas

To be honest, I didn’t visit Cuidad De Itas. If you have read more of my posts, you know I always like to give an honest and truthful opinions about places that I visited. I didn’t visit Cuidad De Itas because other members of our group had to leave early so didn’t have the time.

Cuidad de Itas is a ‘rock city’ that have naturally formed caves and passages. It is a bit further away from the entrance point of the park on top of the hill. It gives a view over the park as well as the hills. There are also a small amount of cave paintings on the walls. It’s a shame I didn’t visit it but let me know in the comments what it was like!

That’s the end of the ultimate guide to visiting Torotoro National Park Bolivia

Each year, over a million tourists get to the tiny town of Torotoro, Bolivia, nestled in a national park of the same name. Although very, very busy during the high season, during the low season the streets are mainly for locals, with the odd gringo group here and there. Famous tours in Torotoro include exploring the nearby dinosaur footprints, as well as the canyon, caves and epic 7 mountain peaks (as seen in the photo above).

Other than a small museum, there’s not a huge amount to do or see in the town itself, but the tours in Torotoro and following exhaustion should keep you busy enough.

Now, the way of booking tours in Torotoro can be confusing – it’s not as easy as just going to a tourist office and getting a ticket a couple of days before. We’ll go through the process so you can hopefully have a smooth ride of it.

After this post on tips and tours in Torotoro, Bolivia, you may also find these guides helpful:

How to get to Torotoro, Bolivia

Bolivian roads and bus routes aren’t the most well-connected. You can’t get from La Paz to Torotoro directly, and even though Torotoro is in the region of Potosí, you can’t access it directly from Potosí city, either. Needless to say, there’s no airport in Torotoro Bolivia. The only way you can get to Torotoro is by road via Cochabamba , and even then the buses aren’t available from the official bus terminal.

There is apparently a large tourist bus at 5am, which you can book in advance (helpfully, it has a giant picture of a dinosaur on it so you know you’re on the right route), but we instead went by colectivo minibus for 35 Bolivianos (£3.50). Because the friend we were staying with in Cochabamba was leaving very early in the morning to get to a business meeting, we decided to leave with her.

Following internet advice, we arrived at ‘Avenida Barrientos, Esquina Republica’ at 4:30am, expecting to get the 5am tourist bus. However, we only found minibus colectivos, so decided to hop onto one of those. We waited until 6am until the bus filled up the 12 spaces to be able to leave. During this time, we were entertained by watching the cholita ladies who pull up at 5am and serve hot drinks and breakfast to waiting passengers out of tiny carts.

tours in torotoro bolivia: driving through river

The road itself is currently being renovated, but is still very ropey in parts. It’s meant to be a 5-6 hour journey, but always expect delays. It took us 7 hours. We were thankful to be in a minibus rather than a large tourist coach.

At times, we had to drive over waterfalls that crossed over the road and down the cliff on the other side, and we got delayed by half an hour because the minibus in front of us broke down because water got into the engine when it drove through the river (yes, you really do drive 10m through a river).

The last hour or so of the journey to get to Torotoro is paved, so you can enjoy the other-wordly views (and pretend you’re in Jurassic Park) without fear of imminent death.

Where to stay in Torotoro, Bolivia

We can’t say we’d recommend the hostel we stayed in. Although it was cheap (£11 for a private double room) and the location was excellent, right opposite the Comedor, we discovered that £120 worth of Bolivianos went missing from our rucksack in our locked, private room while we were staying there. It was our emergency stash, so it was in a wallet that never leaves our rucksack.

Staff denied any wrongdoing, although there is literally no one else that had access to this room, and the door was locked again afterwards. This particular hostel doesn’t provide lockers in the private nor dorm rooms. Be careful, chicos.

If you can get accommodation near to the Mercado Central/comedor, that’s a nice place to be, as far as Torotoro goes (they’ve yet to get any asphalt roads and during rainy season mud will get into every nook and cranny imaginable).

If we were to visit Torotoro again, with what we now know of the town, we would choose to stay at Como en Casa ; nicely priced, well located and highly rated!

Is there WiFi in Torotoro?

Yes and no. We didn’t find any hostels with WiFi in Torotoro when we visited in 2018, but there is WiFi that you can pay for. Across the corner from the comedor, opposite where the cholitas cook street food, you’ll find a colectivo office, where you’ll need to sign your name for a ride back to Cochabamba at the end of your stay (they can take a few hours to fill up, so you don’t have to stay at the office the whole time).

Opposite that, you’ll see a little corner shop, with a blue box at the entrance. Here, you can insert coins to buy top-up wifi, which uses contactless technology to transfer the data allowance to your phone. Pretty nifty! Most hostels in the town do not offer wifi, so this is an excellent back-up supply!

How to book tours in Torotoro

There are plenty of places to see and things to do in Torotoro national park. However, we expected that we could pick and choose which tours in Torotoro we took and tailor our activities into one trip. Wrong .

Because the activities are in different directions and the infrastructure isn’t particularly advanced, you can only do certain packages (known as circuitos) per day.

Some of the packages have some slightly lame things thrown in, like a turtle cemetery, which people coming back from weren’t too thrilled about, so we picked the most exciting, the City of Rocks (Ciudad de Itas) and caving. This day was SO GOOD. We came back exhausted but exhilarated.

Paying entry for tours in Torotoro national park

Before you book any tours in Torotoro, you have to pay 100Bs for a 4-day entry ticket to the Torotoro national park from the town’s little tourism office – Google Maps doesn’t have street names for Torotoro at this point so our directions are a little futile, but coming out of the comedor/Mercado Central, head right and then uphill, past the warehouse with a giant dinosaur head coming out of it (yes, they really built that) and then it will be on your left.

It’s fairly hard to miss:

office to book tours in torotoro bolivia

The office for buying the Torotoro national park entry opens at 7am each day, and you need to have a ticket in your hand before you can go to the Casa de las Guías office next door to book the tour itself with a guide.

If you’re there in high season and are worried about queues, you can always buy your Torotoro national park entry the evening before, but only do this is you’re planning on staying fewer than 3 days in Torotoro.

Keep your entry ticket with you throughout your tours in Torotoro as some attractions have stamping stations.

Can I visit Torotoro national park without a guide?

Nuh-uh. All tours in Torotoro national park require a certified guide, and they also require a full group to book together. Thankfully, there’s no research to be done on different tour agencies here (boy, are we bored of TripAdvisor) as all of the tours run from the Casa de las Guías, and the guide is just assigned to you depending on where you want to go. Don’t expect to find any English-speaking guides, by the way.

If you want English guides, you’re best off looking into the far pricier all-inclusive Torotoro tours from Cochabamba (and opening up yet another TripAdvisor tab).

South America Cochabamba travel guides

Finding a group for tours in Torotoro

Forming a group for our Torotoro national park tour was by far the most nerve-wracking part of this whole thing; unless you want to buy out the whole minibus, you are expected to find 5 like-minded people who want to do the same thing on the same day, and then all go together to book your guide on the day.

We were lucky enough that a group of 4 were walking in the opposite direction to go and buy snacks when they randomly asked us if we were thinking of doing the caving tour and would like to join theirs; major luck!

We did see a woman on her own who came late to the office and unfortunately couldn’t find any group to join, so sadly she may have missed out on that day unless other people came along later. Make sure you get to Torotoro’s tour office by 7:30am and that you make the effort to chat to other people in your hostel the day before.

How much do tours in Torotoro cost?

All of the half-day tours, known as circuitos, cost 100Bs (£10) per group of 6, but some of them also incur additional fees (150Bs) for the cost of transport to and from the sights.

Tours with additional transport costs include the Caving tour and Ciudad de Itas tour, but we did both of these as 2 half-day tours in one day, which allowed us to save on paying twice for the transport.

5 unforgettable tours in Torotoro

1. la ciudad de itas.

Ciudad de Itas includes an epic rock/cave formation that looks like a cathedral, and another that resembles a very large penis (guess which we preferred).

For this half-day tour, we had an excellent guide, in a very new minibus, who took us to the Ciudad de Itas to see a number of above-ground caves and an incredible view of the canyon from afar, teaching us about the rock formations and showing us ancient cave paintings from civilisations long gone.

Ciudad de Itas: caving and canyon tours in torotoro bolivia

We expected to be dropped straight off at the Ciudad de Itas, but instead we had to hike an hour each way, but saw many interesting things along the journey, such as the Torotoro Canyon from afar.

Note, this particular tour is at times very challenging, including free rock climbing up some pretty vertical walls with no harnesses and some parts where we climbed up some precarious looking ladders and used a rope to haul ourselves up to safety.

Although we didn’t go to the most popular dinosaur footprints, we still saw a few on the way to the caves, which were very well preserved!

2. Umajalanta Caving

The caving was the tour in Torotoro that I was the most worried about, being fairly claustrophobic. But caving in the Umajalanta Cavern was so out of this world in both proportion and beauty, and the route was so adventurous that I soon forgot my anxieties.

After parking up and passing by some dinosaur footprints, we were given helmets and head-torches and briefed briefly for the activity. There are lockers at the entrance to keep your stuff in for a small fee.

Getting through the Umajalanta Cavern is physically challenging, and unlike other caving experiences we’ve had, the actual guiding from the guide was, at times, minimal, with him sometimes pointing up in a general direction and telling us to find our own route out towards the light while he helped the slower people.

Caving tour How to get to Torotoro Bolivia National Park Parque Nacional from Cochabamba | Bolivia South America travel guides by Cuppa to Copa Travels

The surfaces are slippery, the paths are sometimes so small that you have to wriggle through on your belly, and there are fatal drops that are in no way cordoned off. Once you’re in, the only way out is to follow the whole path, you cannot go back on yourself due to several slidey bit and large jumps.

But, with some common sense and enough core strength, the whole group got through, and came out feeling hugely energised by the whole thing.

If you’re looking for adventure, this is your tour. If you’re scared of small spaces, the dark, bats or are in any way unfit or overweight (including if you’re well-built in muscle), perhaps give this one a miss.

3. Cañon Torotoro & El Vergel waterfall

This half-day tour leads you past dinosaur footprints to explore the canyon of Torotoro, providing incredible views of this natural wonder from various look-out points. After hiking the 3km from the town of Torotoro to the start of the canyon, you go down 100m in the form of 800 steps to walk through the green floor of the canyon itself.

The walk then brings you to a lagoon filled by El Vergel waterfall in which you can swim, so pack your budgie-smugglers!

After this, we’re sad to report that you do have to climb those 800 steps back up to the top of the canyon, and then walk back into the town. Sorry. Whether or not this is truly a half-day tour depends on the speed of your group’s hiking, so keep in mind that it may overrun.

4. Ruins of Llama Chaqui

This ancient archeological site is the location of a Quechua fortress. Not only do you see the walls and watchtower of the pre-Incan ruins themselves, but also some prehistoric cave paintings nearby.

The Llama Chaqui ruins are only accessible by foot, and sit a whopping 19km south of the centre of Torotoro.

It’s a challenging hike around the hill called Cerro Huayllas Orkho, so only attempt if you’re physically fit and you really enjoy suffering.

5. Turtle Cemetery

Even though we didn’t hear shining reviews about this place, there’s probably someone out there who will find it interesting, so it’s worth a mention anyhoo. The so-called turtle cemetery is a collection of fossils of turtles and prehistoric crocodiles.

It’s situated in the Molle Cancha community, 3.5km from the centre of Torotoro town.

Seeing dinosaur prints without taking tours in Torotoro

Though most of the good ones are sectioned off for the paying tours in Torotoro, you can actually see some dinosaur footprints for free.

If you head out just a few minutes on the same road that the Torotoro Cañon tour takes, down Calle Arteche, you’ll be able to see the footprints once the river is on your left.

Where to eat & drink in Torotoro

The comedor! Also known as Mercado Central, this place hosts 10-12 tiny kitchens run by local women.  At the comedor, any lunch or dinner meal (which includes a soup and a main) is 10Bs, or £1.

They are open for breakfast too, where you can get a bunuela or cheesy pastel and coffee before your tour.

We also recommend buying a cheese and ham sandwich from here to have as a lunch or snack on your tour.

How to get to Torotoro Bolivia National Park Parque Nacional from Cochabamba | Bolivia South America travel guides by Cuppa to Copa Travels

To go with this, we always got a fresh juice or smoothie at one of the two little convenience stalls to the left of the entrance of the comedor. They will give it to you in a glass, and they don’t expect payment until you bring the glass back.

There were a few cafes and restaurants around, but they either weren’t open due to low season or were waaaay too expensive by Bolivian standards, and in our experience, restaurants aimed at tourists do not typically provide the nicest food.

The Ultimate Guide to Torotoro, Bolivia's "Jurassic Park"

Torotoro National Park

Torotoro is one of Bolivia’s most magical national parks , a place where enormous dinosaur footprints, sweeping canyons, surreal rock formations and endless underground caves enchant the adventurous traveler. Many people visit the park on an all inclusive tour, which while convenient, can be expensive. Read our guide to learn everything you need to know to discover this wonderful part of Bolivia, on your own.

Getting there.

To visit Torotoro it is necessary to go via Cochabamba, despite the park actually lying in the department of Potosí . From Cochabamba, the park is accessed along a very bumpy dirt road on a large bus or smaller and more convenient minibus.

Large buses leave Cochabamba once a day at 6am, taking 5-7 hours but costing a measly 23BOB (US$3.30). They are not really a good option though due to the extended travel time, so most people opt for a minibus instead.

These leave when full and take only four hours, if the road is in good condition. Departures are generally between 8am and 8pm with a waiting time of an hour or so as passengers slowly turn up. The cost is only a little more at 35BOB (US$5).

Crocodile’s teeth

Accommodation

Accommodation is pretty basic in this small country town but at least there is always a surplus of beds, so no need to make a reservation. There are plenty more options, besides the ones listed.

Hostal Asteria

The fanciest place in town, which isn’t really saying much. Asteria resides in a beautiful colonial building around a sunny courtyard. With a private bathroom in each well maintained room and a decent attached restaurant, it’s the best this humble town has to offer.

200BS (US$29) for a double room. Hotel Vergel Basic but clean and just one block from the central plaza . Vergel has friendly owners and offers more variety in their restaurant than most. Shared bathrooms.

80BOB (US$11.50) for a double room.

Las Hermanas

Nice place overlooking a well maintained garden with plenty of cats. The rooms are basic but tidy enough, with a clean shared bathroom just a quick walk away. It’s a block downhill from the plaza on the road leading into town.

60BOB (US$9) for a double room.

Exploring the caves of Torotoro

The best place to get a feed is with the locals, at the town market . Good quality Bolivian dishes are on sale for just 10BOB ($US1.50) during breakfast, lunch and dinner. They do simple takeaway sandwiches to take on excursions as well.

Cafe Como en Casa, uphill and to the right from the main plaza, offers reasonable quality international food but is considerably more expensive than local places (around 42BOB / US$6). Breakfasts are particularly recommended.

Museum, Park

Cañon Torotoro and Vergel

A three kilometer hike from the village passes dinosaur footprints up to 50cm long, before suddenly dropping away to reveal the stunning Tototoro canyon, a true highlight of the park. A well maintained lookout has been constructed to take in the natural marvel while admiring a number of vultures usually swooping through the ravine. After descending 800 stairs into the canyon, the scenery starts becoming more lush. Moss covered riverbanks, shrubbery and vines sprawl around a trickling waterfall that empties into a picturesque lagoon, the perfect place for a swim. This is a half day excursion that takes around four hours in total and requires a moderate level of fitness.

Tours guides and entry fees

Hiring a local tour guide is compulsory for any excursions outside of town, which is an important source of income for the local community. Prices work on a sliding scale depending on how many people show up for a particular tour. Sharing a tour with other travelers reduces costs significantly. It’s easy enough to find a group going to Vergel (400BOB/US$57 per group) and Cuidad de las Itas (700BOB/US$100 per group of maximum 7), even in low season, as these are always in high demand. Other excursions will most likely require a private guide. Turn up to the tourist office on the main plaza to see who is around at about 7:30 am for morning or 12:00 pm for afternoon trips, bearing in mind that a significant amount of waiting around is usually required to form a group. A 120BOB (US$17) national park admission fee must be paid to the tourist office which is valid for four days.

Parque Nacional Toro Toro

Torotoro National Park

Quick navigation.

Torotoro National Park is located southwest of the midpoint of Bolivia .  The park covers an area of 64 square miles (165 sq km), making it the smallest national park in the country.

It is seated on the eastern side of the South American Andes mountain in an area known as the “Elbow of the Andes,” making it a neighbor to Amboro National Park .

Torotoro features a landscape that showcases canyons that reach depths of 984 feet (300 m).  The elevations range from 6,562 feet to 11,483 feet (2000 to 3,500 m) with a mostly semi-arid habitat.

This is one of the most intriguing national parks in Bolivia.  Although it is the smallest national park, it is packed with attractions that include caves, canyon, dinosaur footprints, and mystical treks to explore them all.

Torotoro National Park

The canyon landscapes are some of the most striking picturesque terrains in Bolivia.  The views over the canyons are breathtaking.  Combined with the array of dinosaur footprints, this is Bolivia’s Jurassic Park attraction.

Dinosaur Footprints

The dinosaur footprints are one of the leading attractions of the park.  Along with the footprints, there are also bone fragments from varying dinosaurs as well.  Dinosaurs from the Cretaceous period account for the majority of footprints.

There are over 2,500 different dinosaur footprints representing both biped and quadruped dinosaurs.  The footprints get up to almost 20 inches (50 cm) in length.  The dinosaur remnants add intrigue to the already remarkable landscapes.

Torotoro Canyon

Torotoro Canyon is the pinnacle attraction of the national park.  Visitors will see several footprints as they trek toward the canyon lookout.  An 800-step staircase takes visitors down into the canyon for completely different views highlighting the splendor of the area.

Visitors may witness vultures soaring above the canyon and swooping along the canyon walls.  The lagoon at the bottom of the steps makes for a refreshing dip before hiking back up.

  • Cueva Humajalanta

Cueva Humajalanta is an amazing cave located inside the park boundaries.  This is a more adventurous caving experience where you will be wearing a helmet and headlamp as you navigate.

Visitors will crawl along the floor, squeeze through narrow rock formations, and get muddy along the way.  However, those who embark on the adventure will witness various cavern facets, including stalactites, stalagmites, and underground ponds.

  • Batea Q’ocha Rock Paintings

The Batea Q’ocha rock paintings are a carefully preserved collection of rock paintings from the pre-colonial days.  They are situated along the Torotoro River.  Snakes and turtles are the animal highlights which are complemented by other geometrical shapes.

Torotoro National Park Trails

Hiking is magical and the primary activity for exploring and experiencing the national park.  There are trails you can explore on your own, and there are guided tours.  The guided tours are leveraged for exploring the caves.

Vergel Canyon Trail

This is a 4-mile (6.44 km) trek into the canyon's bottom.  An 800-step staircase aids in the descent/ascent in and out of the canyon.  The lower area displays a cascading waterfall along with a couple of natural swimming holes.  Dinosaur prints are experienced along the journey and more luscious vegetation as you near the bottom.

Park Protection

Torotoro National Park was created to protect the astounding Torotoro and Vergel Canyons, the caverns, the dinosaur footprints, and the historical record they represent.  The national park also protects the historical and cultural heritage of the Batea Q’ocha rock paints from the pre-colonial days, which are over 1,000 years old.

Cochabamba Tours

Cochabamba & toro toro tours.

Cochabamba is located in central Bolivia and is the country’s 4th largest city with a population of around 700,000 ‘ cochabambinos’ as its residents are known.

It is famous for having a wonderful climate and for this reason it has earned the name of the “City of Eternal Spring” referring to it’s warm sunny days year-round.

If you ask Bolivians in other parts of the country about Cochabamba they are more likely to tell you about the food than the climate though, both complimenting the dishes available and also suggesting the locals eat a lot more than your average Bolivian!

For some reason it is often overlooked by travelers visiting Bolivia. This is probably as it is a little bit of a detour to the standard North to South or South to North routes that most people follow through the country.

Those that do make the effort to visit Cochabamba usually find this vibrant city to have a lot more to it than the guide books report. The comparative lack of tourists can be a welcome escape for some and many choose to spend longer than they planned.

Cochabamba city is growing economically due to it being an important manufacturing area and it has an image as one of the more progressive parts of Bolivia. It hosted the World People's Conference on Climate Change in 2010 and even has a burgeoning technology sector.

We think tourism will grow in the area in the next few years and facilities will keep on improving.

THINGS TO DO IN COCHABAMBA

Cochabamba Bolivia

There are plenty of things to do in Cochabamba and it it is certainly worth at least a couple of days of your time exploring the city and surrounding areas.

If your looking for nightlife then Cochabamba has quite a lively scene with cool lounge bars and hipster style hangouts, through to ear spliting dance clubs.

Due to the great climate spending the evening in an outdoor beer garden is a popular pastime with the locals.

Some of the most popular things to do in Cochabamba are :

Cristo Statue Cochabamba Bolivia

This wonderful day trek offers the best views possible of the area with a vista of the entire city from the peak and even as far as Illimani mountain on a clear day.

You will pass by rural communities on the way, see herds of llama and alpacas, and if your luck is in you might spot wild Vicunas and Condors.

The area contains lots of  fossils  and if you’re with a local guide they will likely able to show you some in the rocks along the trail

Whilst this doesn’t involve climbing at all, you should be acclimatized to the altitude to try this trek as it starts at an altitude of 4500 meter near Lake Macho and after trekking for about 3 or 4 hours you will reach the peak at 5035 meters.

For more info read the full details of our Cerro Tunari One Day Trek tour.

La Cancha Markert Cochabamba

This huge sprawling market is often said to be the largest in South America and anyone that has traveled the continent a little will know that is not a title that is easy to earn!

It is in fact various markets and shopping areas combined with sections dedicated to different types of goods such as clothing, fruit & veg, meat & poultry, electronics, musical instruments, handicrafts, shoes, bags, sporting goods to name a few.

NOTE – It is important to mention that La Cancha is infamous for its pickpockets, so you need to be careful. Go during the daylight hours, only take what you need with you and try to keep valuables concealed and secure. Be aware that thieves work in pairs or groups and will use distraction techniques.

Prices are cheap, but you should still bargain especially if you think your being quoted a “foreigner price” (likely). Ask a few places to get an idea of prices first but the main thing is that you get a price your happy with!

You can spend hours exploring the streets and alleyways working up an appetite and this is as good a place as any to try out the local street food specialties.

  • Convento de Santa Teresa -  recently restored over a period of about 5 years, this Baroque style convent built in 1760 offers guided tours from Monday to Saturday for a small fee of 25bs. It is a beautiful building and learning about the history of the place and how the nuns lived is interesting.
  • Palacio Portales -  Simón Patiño is perhaps the most famous historical figure from the region and this tin mine baron's euro influenced mansion shows off just how rich he became. There are signs of wealth in every corner and when it was finally completed in 1927 Snr Patiño must have been excited to take up residence in what was the arguably the finest house in the country.  Maybe the excitement was too much as he died of a heart attack in Argentina whilst on route back to Bolivia and never managed to live in the house.
  • Plaza 14 de Septiembre & Cathedral  - the central square of Cochabamba is large and spacious, with plenty park benches under shady trees to sit and watch the world go buy.  As expected there is a colonial feel to it all with the Cochabamba Cathedral on one side and rows of stone archways along the other. Worth paying a visti at night time also as it is nicely lit. If there are protests in the city though, then the plaza becomes a focal point (there are government buildings in the sqaure also) and is best avoided at those times.
  • Archaeological Museum  - this small museum has an ineresting collection including locally discovered dinosaur bones & fossils, items of pottery & ceremics from pre incan civilisations such as Tiwanaku , artifacts from Inca times through to colonial times. Explanations are in spanish although there might be the possibility of an english tour once per day (best to checkin advance about this as not always available). Entrance 25bs.
  • Iglesia & Convento de San Francisco
  • Iglesia Santa Domingo

  • Incallajta  -  this Inca archeological site is a UNESCO World Heritage site that comprises of over 40 building spread over 67 hectares. It is located about 2.5 to 3 hours drive from Cochabamba and deserves to recieve more visitors that it does. It was thought to have been constructed as part of a series of cities along the eastern perimiter of the Inca terratories in Bolivia in order to provide protection against incursions from Chiriguano Indians from the Amazon region. It was only discovered by westerners in 1913 (no doubt locals always knew about it). Nearby to the site there are nice hiking paths and some waterfalls you can visit. See full details of our Incallajta 1 Day Tour
  • Villa Tunari & Machia Animal Refuge  - Located about 3 to 4 hours drive from Cochabama , Villa Tunari is located at the junction of the Andes and the Amazon. At an altitude of just 450 meters above sea level, it is tropical, hot and humid. Being a small jungle town it can make for a nice relaxing getway. It is also home to the Machia Park Animal refuge run by Inti Wara Yassi which looks after and rehabilitates many animals such as monkeys, jaguars, pumas, macaws and even andean bears. It is possible to spend time volunteering at the refuge and help look after the animals. For more details see  the Inti Wara Yassi web site
