While there are many resources for active duty military members, it gets a little confusing when you become a veteran. Although there are several options for veterans’ vacations, airfare and even cellphone discounts, there may be additional stipulations for those looking to save.

Let’s look at some of the best travel resources for veterans, whether you’re retired, have a disability or just finished your time in the armed forces.

Flight discounts for Veterans

Even if you’re no longer active duty, there are a few special flights for veterans, including the opportunity to fly to Washington, D.C.

Space-A travel

Space-A travel is available to those who are on active duty. These flights can be limited, but they allow service members the ability to catch flights for free.

Space-A travel is also available to certain veterans. This includes retired veterans and those who are permanently 100% disabled.

Veteran airline discounts abound, but Space-A travel is among the best. Note that veterans flying Space-A are limited in their destinations and lower on the priority list than active-duty members.

Honor Flights

Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization that offers flights for veterans. Those who have served in the military can receive a complimentary trip to Washington, D.C., to be honored for their service.

Airline discounts

Many airlines offer discounts to veterans. Most of these are via Veterans Advantage, whose VetRewards program costs money but provides 5% discounts on airfare with many airlines.

You don’t have to be a disabled veteran to get flight discounts with Veterans Advantage. You can be active duty, a veteran or even an immediate family member of someone who’s served.

Veteran discounts on hotels

It’s easy to find hotels with veteran discounts and even free vacations for disabled veterans — though that’s not usually a requirement.

American Forces Travel

American Forces Travel is a website offering comprehensive travel discounts to those who are or have been in the military. You’ll need to verify your information before accessing the website, after which you’ll be entitled to exclusive discounts on hotels, flights, rental cars, and even event tickets.

Armed Forces Vacation Club

The Armed Forces Vacation Club is available to active-duty members and veterans and can provide great discounts on vacations.

Once registered, you can book hotels and vacation rentals for cheap — and we mean really cheap. Think “seven nights in a condo near Orlando, Florida for $400” cheap. There’s a standard membership for free, but premium members are entitled to bigger discounts.

Nonprofit organizations

Many organizations in the United States enjoy recognizing veterans, which is why you’ll find many offering free retreats, resorts and hotel stays around the world.

In Honor of Our Troops (IHOOT) is just one of these; eligible service members and veterans can enjoy a free stay at participating properties.

MWR properties

Those who’ve been in the military will no doubt remember the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program. Whether you hung out in its rec room or rented low-cost camping equipment, stopping by the MWR office was probably a common occurrence.

Eligible veterans will be happy to know that Armed Forces Recreation Center resorts (AFRC) are bookable even after they leave the military. Popular options include the Shades of Green resort at Walt Disney World and the Hale Koa Hotel in Hawaii.

Other hotel discounts

Veterans Advantage also has a list of hotel chains available for discounts, including Wyndham, Marriott and Hilton.

Other travel discounts

Travel costs aren’t limited to flights and accommodations. If you’re looking to go on vacation, here are some other veteran-specific discounts to look out for.

Many cellphone providers give discounts to active-duty military and veterans. T-Mobile’s veteran discount is among the best. You’ll have access to military-specific phone plans with pricing up to 40% off standard rates.

Verizon also offers a military discount that extends to veterans, but it’s not quite as generous. Once verified, planholders can save up to $25 per month on eligible plans.

Finally, AT&T offers military members and veterans 25% off phone plans.

While most airlines are willing to offer benefits only to active-duty military personnel, Allegiant Air stands out . This is thanks to the incredible perks that veterans (and active-duty members) receive.

As a low-cost airline, Allegiant charges for overhead carry-ons and checked bags. However, veterans are entitled to two free checked bags, a free carry-on and a free pet in the cabin when flying with Allegiant.

Tickets, tours and other attractions

American Forces Travel offers discounted tickets to all veterans, whether or not they’re disabled. The same is true of GOVX, which discounts tickets and other items, including travel purchases.

If you’re a veteran with a disability, you have access to the MWR program and its ticket office, which can provide incredible savings on tickets, tours and other activities.

Depending on your level of service connection, you can save up to half off popular attractions such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando.

Veterans are eligible for travel reimbursement pay for certain medical appointments. This reimbursement is designed to help offset the costs associated with traveling to and from your medical appointments. If you are unsure of whom to contact regarding veteran travel reimbursement pay, this overview will help guide you in the right direction.

The first step in accessing your travel reimbursement pay as a veteran is to contact your local Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facility. This facility will have a Travel Pay Coordinator who can provide you with the necessary information and guidance to apply for travel reimbursement pay.

It's important to note that not all veterans are eligible for travel reimbursement pay. To be eligible, you must meet certain criteria set by the VA. Generally, the VA provides travel reimbursement pay for veterans who:

  • Have a service-connected disability rating of 30% or more
  • Travel for treatment related to a service-connected disability
  • Receive a VA pension
  • Have a low-income status
  • Are traveling to receive a compensation or pension exam
  • Are traveling for a VA scheduled appointment
  • Are traveling for a VA-approved specialty care service

Once you have determined your eligibility for travel reimbursement pay, you will need to submit a Travel Reimbursement Application (VA Form 10-3542). This form can either be filled out online or obtained from your local VA medical facility. It's important to fill out the form accurately and provide all the necessary supporting documents, such as receipts for transportation expenses.

When submitting your Travel Reimbursement Application, make sure to include any relevant documentation, such as proof of your disability rating or travel receipts. This will help expedite the reimbursement process and ensure you receive the correct amount.

After you have submitted your Travel Reimbursement Application, it will be reviewed by the VA Travel Pay Coordinator. The coordinator will determine if you are eligible for reimbursement and calculate the amount you are entitled to based on the distance traveled and the mode of transportation used.

Once your application has been approved, you can expect to receive your travel reimbursement pay within a few weeks. The payment will be made either by direct deposit or by check, depending on your preference.

If you have any questions or need further assistance regarding your travel reimbursement pay, don't hesitate to contact your local VA medical facility. They will be able to provide you with the necessary information and support to ensure you receive the reimbursement you are entitled to.

In summary, if you are a veteran and need to know whom to contact regarding veteran travel reimbursement pay, reach out to your local VA medical facility. They will have a Travel Pay Coordinator who can assist you in determining your eligibility, completing the necessary paperwork, and ensuring you receive your reimbursement in a timely manner. Remember to gather all the required documentation and fill out the Travel Reimbursement Application accurately to avoid any delays in the reimbursement process.

How to Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs

These counselors are knowledgeable about VA programs and can provide guidance and assistance with travel-related issues. To find a benefits counselor, visit the VA's website and click on the "Find a VA Location" option under the "Contact Us" tab. From there, you can search for a benefits counselor near you.
  • Written Correspondence: If none of the above options work for you, or if you prefer written communication, you can send a letter to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Address your letter to the VA Regional Office that handles your case or the specific office responsible for travel reimbursement pay. Be sure to include your full name, address, social security number, and a detailed explanation of your inquiry or concern.

When contacting the VA, it's important to have any relevant documentation or information readily available. New Berrien County Veterans Services Office opens in Niles

by Cicily Porter, WSBT 22 Reporter

A new Berrien County Veterans Services Office opened in the Niles. A poster details the services offered by the office.{ } (WSBT photo)

NILES, Mich. (WSBT) — A new Berrien County Veterans Services Office just opened in the Niles, so vets don't have to travel all the way to St. Joseph for help.

There was a lot of excitement at Monday’s event because until now, veterans in Niles had to travel more than a half hour to access resources.

Now, there are more resources available for veterans in Niles.

Help for Berrien County veterans is now at the north end of the Niles Courthouse across from the health department.

One of the main reasons for opening the new office in Niles was to serve veterans in the southern part of the county.

Niles is the ideal location, because it is one of the larger cities in southern Berrien County.

“So, I mean as you know, aside from Saint Joe and Benton Harbor, Niles is kind of the next biggest city in the county. I think it is going to be nice to service this whole southern area. We have a big, populated area with South Bend, Cass is close by. So, just pulling all those veterans who don't want to commute north to Saint Joe and bring the service to the area,” said Ryan McNeely, Veteran Service Officer - Berrien County.

In the first two hours of being open, four veterans already utilized the new office.

One of the veterans there works in South Bend and said she's grateful to have a shorter commute.

WSBT visited a VFW nearby to hear what local veterans have to say about the new location.

“Well, it's a good thing because Berrien County is kind of large and traffic is getting worse and gas is expensive,” said Ed Reeves, Veteran.

Veteran Service Offices are important because they help veterans and their dependents with getting their benefits and compensation, signing them up for VA healthcare, and more.

McNeely says this office is crucial.

“I am excited to service this big community down here... I mean there is a lot of veterans and dependents like I said that don't want to make the trip up north or maybe they're housebound or bedridden that maybe you need someone to come to their home and help with that,” said McNeely.

The new office is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9 to 2 and on Wednesdays from 9 to 1.

Walk-ins are welcome but you can also make an appointment by calling the office.

Perks for Veterans

Serving in the military is a profound commitment, and there is simply not enough we're able to do for the men and women who served or are still serving our country to show our gratitude. Their sacrifices are, after all, too meaningful to ever appropriately compensate.

American Veterans Traveling Tribute coming to East Brunswick for Memorial Day

Just in time for Memorial Day, Central Jersey residents will have the chance to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country when the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) makes a stop in East Brunswick.

AVTT Vietnam Wall is coming to the East Brunswick Community Arts Center, 721 Cranbury Road, from May 23-27, according to VFW Memorial Post 133.

The AVTT Traveling Vietnam Wall is an 80% replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Wall contains the names of U.S. Military personnel who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Accompanying the Wall will be Cost of Freedom tributes to every U.S. military action since World War I.

Built in 1998, AVTT’s Traveling Vietnam Wall provides those who are not able to visit the memorial in Washington D.C. with the opportunity to honor and pay tribute to those who served in the Vietnam War.

VFW Post 133 Commanding Officer Tom Coohill, who served on two heavy cruisers as a Gunner's Mate in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, came up with the idea to bring the wall to the township about four months ago.

"Over the years, it has come to different towns, but hasn't been to East Brunswick," he said. "I think it was long overdue in our town. We have a lot of Vietnam veterans in our area, especially in Middlesex County. A lot of veterans can't travel to Washington D.C. to see it so we're bringing it to them. I think the want and need is there. It's very important to us."

Coohill suggested the idea to post member Anthony Finello, a U.S. Army veteran that served in the Vietnam War, who jumped onboard.

Coohill also reached out to the mayor and other township officials, who thought it was a great idea.

"It started small," Coohill said. "We set up a few committees to look into bringing the Traveling Wall to the Township and it just got bigger and bigger. We got a lot of help from the VFW Post 133 Auxiliary, as well as the township and the county."

The VFW also embarked on a fundraising campaign.

"The community has been very generous," Coohill said. "The township, as well as our police and fire departments, have been very generous in supporting our efforts to raise the funds. It cost us about $15,000 to bring it here."

"The East Brunswick community is thrilled to be hosting the VFW Vietnam Memorial Wall over the Memorial Day holiday," Mayor Brad Cohen said in a statement. "Please come out to the Community Arts Center to see the wall and pay respects to the many men and women who gave their lives preserving our freedoms. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten."

At about 10 a.m. May 22, a welcome motorcade will escort the wall from Brunswick Square Mall on Route 18 southbound to the Community Arts Center, where the tribute will be assembled.

Participants include members of VFW Memorial Post 133; police, fire, and EMTs; Rolling Thunder' the Blue Knights, and past national commander of the VFW, George Lisicki, who will serve as Grand Marshal, Coohill said.

Members of the VFW Post 133 and other posts from throughout the district will guard the wall 24/7, Coohill said.

Several events are planned during the visit. All other times will be for reflection.

An opening ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. May 23 at the Community Center. Following the ceremony, the Wall will be open to visitorsfromMay 23 through Memorial Day, May 27.

East Brunswick Township will host its annual Memorial Day Observance at the Wall at 10 a.m. May 26 to commemorate U.S. Military personnel who gave their lives in service to their country.

Weather permitting, a Blackhawk Helicopter is expected to arrive at the site at 9 a.m. May 27. At 10 a.m., the VFW Memorial Post 133 will hold its Memorial Day observance at the site. A closing service will be held at 6 p.m.

AVTT is a multi-division nationally recognized veteran owned and operated small business, according to its website . Their mission is to travel the United States showcasing the Traveling Vietnam Wall and Cost of Freedom Tribute to honor, respect and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. They also hope to educate the present and future generations of Americans about our historical past, whilesupporting veterans, their family members and Veteran causes through its nonprofit - The Texas Freedom Tribute, t he website says.

For additional information, visit www.eastbrunswick.org/MemorialWall , for a schedule of events, which is continuously being updated, or contact VFW Post 133 Commanding Officer Tom Coohill at  [email protected] , or 732-254-8864.
