The Ultimate US to Prague Travel Guide for 2024

USA travel

Table of contents Show

Why you should visit prague in a weekend, český krumlov, the city of dresden, germany, plan today and travel to prague from the us.

There are now more than 20 million annual tourists to the Czech Republic, making it one of the most popular tourist hotspots in Europe. Prague, the country’s capital, draws in more than 8 million tourists a year, over 7 million of whom are from abroad, including Americans. This guide shows you how to travel from Prague to the US .

Because of its strategic location in Europe, Prague is a breeze to get to. Traveling to Prague by plane or rail is the norm.

Direct flights flying from the United States to Prague are offered by just a select group of airports and airlines. You may fly directly with Delta, KLM, and Air France via JFK Airport in New York City.

Therefore, a stopover at JFK airport or another European location such as London is probably required. Also, remember to book one of the hotels within your price range. There are so many hotels in Prague with spectacular views to choose from.

Prague view

  • This city has flourished and is now more popular than ever with travelers. The city’s charming core, though, conceals a troubled history as well as its own capacity for renewal. Prague has been around since around A.D. 870, and during that time, it has survived countless uprisings, invasions, fires, and floods. Because of its reputation for staying alive and keeping going, the Czech capital is incredibly interesting.
  • Today, a weekend in Prague seems like something out of a fairy tale, with its historic churches, winding alleyways, foreboding hilltop castle, and masterpiece bridges. This city has so much to offer that even the most cynical visitor will have a hard time saying no.
  • Before its western neighbors became so popular, Prague was a little-known jewel. The city was unable to keep its wonders a secret for very long and is now a Mecca for sightseers in search of jaw-dropping adventures on a budget.
  • Some of the world’s finest beers are made in Prague, and the city’s restaurants serve up traditional Czech cuisine that will leave a lasting impression on your tastebuds.
  • The capital of Czech is a musical wonderland with soul because of the contributions of composers such as Dvoák and Mozart.
  • Many of the city’s best hotels still charge a fraction of what they would in other European capitals, and popular sights like Charles Bridge and Prague Castle are free to visit.

Best Weekend Trips From Prague

The moon is out tonight; how about a romantic dinner for two? Often the couples who visit Prague on a romantic trip in Europe opt to take a dinner cruise as part of their sightseeing plans.  So in a chic three-hour dining cruise aboard a state-of-the-art boa on river Vltava , you can admire the city’s historic sights.

Visit the spooky sites of old Prague and get the chills while learning about the city’s eerie past. You’ll be taken on a tour through haunted streets by a guide dressed as a ghost or other scary character.

Beer tasting is an ideal activity for those who appreciate drinking beer, hearing about its history, and sampling numerous varieties. Guests will be able to try seven quality Czech beers as well as other wonderful foods from this part of Europe!

The Czech Republic’s capital is an excellent base from which to see the rest of the continent, so if that sounds appealing, you should definitely consider a trip there.  Find the top four day trips from Prague right here!

Visit Český Krumlov

The picturesque village of  Český Krumlov rests on the winding Vltava River , about 3 hours by either bus or train from the capital of Czech. The town of Český Krumlov, surrounded by a castle built in the 13th century, is a delightful labyrinth of narrow alleys and courtyards. The castle is a popular tourist destination in the Czech Republic; it was originally constructed in the 13th century and then renovated in the medieval and baroque styles. Also in Český Krumlov is the Egon Schiele Art Centrum, a museum honoring the life and work of the city’s most well-known native son and a prominent figure in Austrian modernism.

Kutná Hora ossuary

The Sedlec Ossuary, sometimes referred to as the ‘bones chapel,’ is situated in Kutná Hora, a tiny town approximately two hours by rail from Prague. Skeletal remains from more than forty thousand people, the majority of whom perished in the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe in the 1400s, adorn the interior of the modest church.

St. Barbara Street is a great place to take in the sights of the capital, and the Medieval St. Barbara’s Church, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, is definitely worth a visit.

City of Dresden

Just a little further north of the Czech Republic’s Switzerland is the historic city of Dresden, Germany. Many well-known buildings and landmarks were damaged or destroyed during World War II but had been subsequently reconstructed.

The city has been there for more than 800 years, and despite its age, it has retained a lot of its grandeur and allure. Have a wonderful time in this beautiful German city by visiting its castles and museums.

Karlštejn castle

Take the train for a relaxing 40 minutes, and you’ll arrive at Karltejn, a Medieval castle from the 14th century that has been remarkably well-preserved. Ascend the hill, and you’ll see souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants, and even the rare antique shop before you reach the castle gates. The only way to see the castle inside is to pay for a guided tour, but if you visit in the summer or fall, pack a pair of hiking boots and explore the various trails in the area.

For stays of up to 90 days, the U.S. Department of State asserts that U.S. citizens do not require a visa to enter the Czech Republic, making it possible to fly to Prague from the US and stand in awe at the city’s famous landmarks like the renowned Dancing House , Powder Tower , St. Nicholas Church , the popular Charles Bridge , and the medieval Astronomical Clock .

Time is of the essence if you’re looking to score a bargain in this heritage of thrift, so if you’ve been keeping an eye out, this is the best time to act. Check out the Prague visitor guide for the best things to do in Prague .

New requirements for Americans traveling to Europe postponed until 2025

Visitors who now travel visa-free will need to get approval prior to departure.

Americans eyed upcoming travel to European destinations slightly differently due to news of a requirement that was set to start in 2024 for U.S. passport holders. But now, EU officials have postponed the European Travel Information and Authorisation System ( ETIAS ) launch until spring of 2025.

SchengenVisaInfo.com, a website dedicated to the world's largest visa-free zone where 27 European countries abolished their internal borders known as the Schengen Area, first reported that an EU official confirmed ETIAS won't go live until May 2025, "due to continued delays with the introduction of the related Entry-Exit System (EES), which needs to be operational before ETIAS can be implemented."

An official for the European Union did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment.

What to know about ETIAS for US travelers

If you previously traveled to Europe without a visa, you will now need to apply for authorization through the ETIAS , before visiting.

PHOTO: Tourists with umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun at Colosseo area (Colosseum), during the ongoing heat wave with temperatures reaching 40 degrees, on July 19, 2023, in Rome.

Today, American travelers have visa-free access to 184 global destinations, according to the Henley Passport Index . And while the U.S. passport is currently ranked eighth-most powerful passport to own, that could be set to shift when the European Union adds its new documentation requirements for U.S. visitors.

The application form, which will be available on the official ETIAS website as well as a mobile application, has a fee of 7 euros or $7.79 U.S. dollars. All communication is done by email.

Once you are approved for travel, the authorization entitles visitors to stay in European countries that require ETIAS for up to 90 days within any 180-day period and travelers must be in possession of a valid ETIAS during their entire stay.

MORE: New warning issued for rebooking air travel after delays, cancellations

According to ETIAS, most applications should be processed within minutes, but in case an application takes longer, decisions will be sent within four days or up to 14 days if the applicant is asked to provide additional documentation.

The European Union encourages travelers to apply for an ETIAS authorization "well in advance of your planned journey."

Confirmation of application submission will be sent on email with a unique number that is needed for future reference.

PHOTO: In this undated file photo, a tourist visa is stamped on a passport.

Upon receiving ETIAS travel authorization, travelers are to ensure that their name, passport number and other information is correct because any mistake will prevent them from crossing the border.

If an application is refused, the email will include the reasons for the decision along with information about how to appeal.

ETIAS travel authorization is valid for three years, according to the EU, or until the travel document you used in your application expires, whichever comes first.

The ETIAS authorization is linked to a person's travel document -- such as a U.S. passport -- and both documents will be needed to board a flight, bus or ship to enter any of the European countries that require ETIAS.

Similar to international border requirements with a passport, the ETIAS authorization doesn't guarantee automatic right of entry. "Border guards will verify that you meet the entry conditions" and anyone who does not meet the conditions "will be refused entry," according to the EU.

Conditions for entry to the Czech Republic

27.12.2021 / 14:45 | Aktualizováno: 11.02.2022 / 11:37

(This article expired 11.02.2022 / 11:30.)

Updated rules for entry to the Czech Republic.

As of December 27 th , 2021, the rules for entry into the Czech Republic will be tightened for foreign nationals. Foreign nationals (who are entitled to enter) travelling to the Czech Republic will have to present a negative PCR test result before the travel. This obligation applies also to vaccinated persons and persons who recovered from COVID-19 in the last six months. It applies to travels from all countries regardless of the level of risk of the COVID-19 transmission. Persons who are not vaccinated or who did not recover from COVID-19 in the last six months, have to undergo a PCR test between 5 th  and 7 th  day after arrival. This requirement does not apply to persons vaccinated with the COVID booster shot, children under 12 and children in the age group 12-18 years who are fully vaccinated (booster shot not required). Other exceptions are specified in the protective measure.

New Year’s Eve celebrations: For the period from December 30 th , 2021 to January 1 st , 2022, stricter entry conditions are introduced for short-term travels (up to 24 hours) with the aim to reduce travels to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Persons travelling to the Czech Republic will have to present a negative PCR test result before travel, the only exception applies to persons vaccinated with the booster shot.

Above mentioned rules are not applicable for Czech citizens and foreign nationals with permanent or long-term residence in the territory of the Czech Republic , current rules are still valid. If they arrive by a means of public transport, they are still allowed to only have the result of an antigen test instead of the result of an PCR test before entering the territory of the Czech Republic, and if they arrive individually (by car) such persons are exempt from the obligation to have a test before entering the territory of the Czech Republic. Vaccinated persons are exempt from testing.

Guide for Traveling to Prague

Traveling to Prague is quite easy. It's really up to you and your budget. You can fly to Prague, take the train, bus or drive.

How will you travel to Prague?      Air   -   Train   -   Bus   -   Car

This page outlines a little bit about each method of arrival. From there it's up to you. So, grab your passport and guidebook (if you insist) and get here!

Flying to Prague

Traveling to Prague is easiest by air. Many airlines fly to Prague and most of them offer  cheap flights to Prague . If you can, always  book early  and  be flexible  - especially with budget airlines.

The  Prague Airport  is an ideal place to arrive and depart from. It's small, efficient and new. Delays are rare and passport control is tame compared to larger airports.

The airport has two main terminals, Terminal 1 and 2. In each one you'll find dining, information points and transfer services. If you need accommodation near the airport, try either of these  airport hotels .

You can  get to the airport  very quickly from the city center. The cheapest route is by public transportation. There are a few buses that service the airport and they link to different metro stations.  Read more about travel in Prague.

If you prefer a taxi or transfer service, try the yellow  AAA Taxi  company. They seem to be the most reliable. They have an office in the arrivals hall and can quote you a rate before departure.

Read this article for more info about flights to Prague .

Train to Prague

Traveling to Prague by train is my favorite way to get here. Czech Republic is a beautiful country in all seasons and you'll see more by train than by any other method of travel.

Anyway,  Prague has two major train stations . This is  important to note  if you're arriving by train.

• The  main train station  is  Hlavní Nádraží . This station services most domestic routes although some international trains stop here as well. The abbreviation is often written as "hl.n."

The  Prague metro  stops here as well sharing the station's name. It's on the C line which is red on the  metro map .

• Most  international trains  arrive and depart from  Nádraží Holešovice . It's smaller than the main train station but also has a metro stop (C line).

Tip:  Buy tickets in advance for international destinations - even if it means going to the station a few days early. And, I always get a reserved seat especially in the summer months. This costs a bit more but saves you the hassle of looking for a seat everywhere.

Also to note: domestic routes can be quite busy Thursday - Sunday. Many people go away for the weekend in the warmer months - and trains get crowded especially Friday and Sunday afternoons.

Bus to Prague

Traveling to Prague by bus is the cheapest way to get here. You can find lots of cheap bus routes  from lots of destinations in Europe. And, buses are particularly useful for taking day trips from Prague to smaller destinations like Český Krumlov.

Most bus routes use the main bus station at  Florenc . Although, many international buses depart from the train station  Nádraží Holešovice .

The  Eurolines  site is a good starting place for buying tickets.

You can get to both bus stations via metro.  Read more about the Prague metro.

Driving to Prague

Let's get this out of the way -- the  main problem  with traveling to Prague by car is...  What do you do with your car while you're here?  Because, you certainly won't need your car while you're here. (Unless of course, you plan to take day trips.)

Of course, still many people  rent a car  for their European trip.

Parking is very difficult  in Prague and quite expensive - especially in the city center. And, that's where you want to stay - near attractions.

Parking garages range from 15-40 eur/day. Sometimes you can find accommodation with free parking but it can be difficult and expensive.

Or, if you drive just outside the historical areas you can find  free parking . But, like most big European cities, car theft is always possible.

Aside from parking, the roads in the Czech Republic can be dangerous. Czech drivers can be particularly aggressive - especially compared to drivers in the U.S.

If you decide to drive, get more information about driving and tolls from the  Czech Highway homepage .

Traveling to Prague by Boat?

There are many river cruises that operate along the  Vltava River . But, at the moment there aren't transport options from other cities by boat.

Instead, I recommend just taking a river cruise while you're in Prague. There are many options from one hour tours to whole day journeys.

  • If you’re looking for a place to rest before your flight from Prague Airport (PRG), there’s a rest area at terminal 2 with seats and footrests for your relaxation.
  • If you’re looking for some things to do at PRG, at T2, landside, in front of the observation deck entrance, you can visit the airport museum, which has documentaries and large-format photographs and maps.
  • You can access luggage storage at terminal 2 next to the luggage reclaim, an area that operates 24h a day. At terminal 1, the storage area is at the landside, near entrance A. Luggage wrappings that protect your bags are available at terminal 1, Landside at the Departures Hall, and terminal 2, Landside at the Departures Hall at the entry or exit D.
  • Ramada Airport Hotel at the South Terminal 3 offers free airport shuttles between T1 and T2. Courtyard Prague Airport is another hotel with airport shuttle services between T1 and T2. Holiday Inn, located north of Terminals 1 and 2, also offers such services. All these hotels are within airport grounds.
  • Send your postcards as soon as you land at PRG. The Česká Pošta at terminal 1, landside in the connector between terminals 1 and 2, opens at about 8 am.
  • Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) is the central airport serving Prague and the Czech Republic as a whole. Located 10 miles outside of the city, the airport is the only commercial airport servicing Prague, though there are a number of smaller private airfields for helicopters and private planes.
  • Travelers looking to freshen up after their flight to Prague are in luck, as Prague Airport has showers available in both Terminal 1 (in the Rest & Fun Lounge Area) and Terminal 2. The Terminal 2 showers are free of charge, with towels and lockers requiring a deposit.
  • Having first aid supplies handy is important for many travelers. Fortunately, there is a pharmacy right within Prague Airport. Travelers can pick up bandaids, antiseptic, and any other first aid supplies they may need during their travels. The pharmacy is located on the second floor of the corridor linking Terminals 1 and 2.
  • Need a place to curl up and sleep before your next flight? The Relaxation Zone in Terminal 2 is the ideal place for you. The Relaxation Zone is equipped with comfortable couches and cushions and even a fitness machine. There is no better place to catch a bit of shut eye in Prague Airport.
  • Did hearing about Franz Kafka on your flight to Prague inspire you to dive into a good book? If so, check out the reading corners located in Terminals 1 and 2 in Prague Airport. Whether you are waiting for a connection or are fresh off a flight, it is a great place to read and relax. Magazines and books are available for free and can also be borrowed or swapped out for another book.

Top 5 airlines flying to prague.

The gate area was incredibly short staffed, with one representative manning 4-5 flights, which caused a 3 hr delay in boarding even though the plane was all ready to leave. Other flights also were delayed because of this. The flight crew was awesome and I feel bad for the only gate worker on call, but Delta needs to hire more employees.

Very frustrated with boarding gate crew. She announced the plane was small and they would be limiting us to one item to carry on. Not a problem for me as I understand the tiny planes have limited space!! Not the case here! It was a rather large plane and had plenty of room for bags! So because I don’t want to be one of “those people” who ignores the request to check a carry on I did so asking if I would be able to pick it up at the bottom of the ramp on arrival in Knoxville to which she responded “yes”! Then I watched as every other passenger held onto their 2 items and boarded!! Then when we arrived in Knoxville our 2 carry ons had been put with all the other luggage and we had to go to baggage pick up and wait for all the big checked bags to come off the carousel! So she lied!! Frustrating. Next time I won’t be so nice!

It was a good experience except when boarding a female flight attendant did not go out of her way to assist my teenage daughters in finding space for their carry-ons after their compartments were full.

On time departure, smooth trip, flight attendant told through passengers the gate we would arrive at and the gate our outbound flight was departing from. Early arrival

Checking in at the airport the agent only booked the first keg of my trip and had my checked luggage going to the airport with a layover! Never was issued a boarding pass for the second leg or received sticker fir my checked bag. All was well in the end! Delta agents helped to resolve the situation!!!

Delayed due to an ill passenger after loading. Not preventable on Delta's part. Was in first class. The seats are becoming worn and detaching from their velcro attachments. Only got snacks on flight. The attendant was not the friendliest.

I would fly again the whole experience was great. The only feed back I can give that they don't do that American Airlines does is the crew there is more humorous with boarding and thank their passengers. It makes it more fun to fly with them. I would however fly Delta again.

Big plane, long flight, absolutely no leg room and basically non existent air! I am 5”4’ and always travel Main Cabin, I was miserable on this plane and could barely move when we arrived in Cabo due to the cramped leg area!

From Atlanta to Cabo I would have hoped on a plane that size I would have been able to breathe and wiggle my feet a little! The leg room in that plane is non existent and I am only 5”4’. And the air vent either wasn’t working very well or just could not blow air from the ceiling to the seat area as I was suffocating through the entire flight! And please don’t say I would have been more comfortable in first class because I cannot afford those rates and have always travelled Main Cabin without issues !

The pilots were good. Disappointing when planes don't have electrical ports

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

I paid $380 for my one-way ticket from California to Minnesota. The fair did not include online check-in. I received instructions from their app to check in at a kiosk. At the kiosk, the boarding pass would not print until an actual person came to verify that I had a personal item and not a carry-on item, On the plane, the person next to me was drunk and allowed to continue to order alcohol. United is garbage I’d rather fly spirit.

The plane was dirty and the in seat air wasn't blowing as planes usually do.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Do not like the feeling of being in the basic economy. Everyone should feel good no matter what.

All flights were on time and boarding was issue free

Terrible! The plane was old and you are required to connect your own device to their Wi-Fi rather than have entertainment options in the back of the seat in front of you. The Wi-Fi went out during the flight and there was only one plug for the devices every two seats. Three out of five surrounding my family did not work. The seats and spaces under them were so small I could not fit my backpack, which I’ve always brought on flights and fit before no problem. The crew were unpleasant and patronizing.

Great! The plane was decently sized and comfortable. The staff was nice and there was great in flight entertainment

Food was terrible Not many options Stewards dont care Delay

Water service would be great. The way they board is terrible. Slow passengers first😂😂 They need to smart up a bit

Are Longus was fine. I booked thru Kayak and was unable to get my business class seat early. Sat next to galley. Crew forgot to wake me for breakfast.

I loved how they arrange boarding (starting with people seated in back and moving to the front). Flight crew was very polite and welcoming. Seating was ok, I felt like there was enough leg space however it is noticeable when the passenger in front of you sets their seat back.

Nice to be on a flight that wasn't fully booked so there were only two of us in the three seat row.

The only problem was there are games on the entertaiment system. The guy behind me played poker the entire time and poking the back of my seat. I hope they remove these.

First the price I paid was excellent, my flight was full, but my seat was roomy. The one downside to the experience was they had games on the entertainment console. The guy behind me poked at my head about half the flight. I hope they get rid of this feature.

Great travel. Wonderful experience. Hope to do it again in the near future. God willing

Aer Lingus doesn't have plug ins for devices at each seat. They also did not give me a dairy free meal as requested and confirmed by staff. It was as if I had not requested anything. Otherwise, they were great!

The transatlantic flight was wonderful. The regional reminded me of jet blue. Crazy and packed. Not enough overhead space and tough on elderly.

All OK. Food, best bring your own. Even a BigMac will be better.

Thankfully not a full flight so although my headphone jack wasn’t working 100% on my window seat, I was able to move to the aisle seat. Food was fine, nothing great but tasty enough. Crew were friendly and made enough rounds. Always have a decent experience with Aer Lingus

Checked in is easy and it was a smooth flight from LAX to Munich

There is no recline on flight from DFW to FRA. Middle eastern airways provide better recline option for the same class. FRA to Bangalore has better recline option. I bid 100$ for premium economy, my request was declined. But staff handled it without issues.

The Lufthansa part was wonderful. The short connection flight was not.

German crew were very kind. Food was okay but can be better, especially bread was not good, Garbage collection was very poor.

Awful Terrible staff poor communication Flight delayed for an hour with no apology or explanation and no help re missing connecting flight. Resulted in a 7 hour layover at Munich waiting for another connecting flight. Only 15 euros refreshment voucher given. Will not fly Lufthansa again

Both flights were late for what appeared to be the airline’s not having the planes ready. Arrived over 6 hours late.

It was a busy flight and all the crew were very helpful and gracious

Seats were not the most comfortable and food options weren’t great but overall but everything else was excellent

Check-in very easy and smooth. Plane and crew were nice. Seat open next to me created more space. Food was fair but plentiful. Lots of movies and I was able to sleep some on the way to Munich. Very tight connection, about an hour. Fast through passport control and a bit of a walk to last G terminal gate but I made my connection to Palma. Unfortunately, my luggage did not make it. It is now almost 24 hours since I anded and still NO luggage. I know it landed last night on another flight. Local delivery should be today to my hotel in Palma but nothing yet. I asked about the tight connection when I checked in and was assured they would get my luggage to the connecting flight. Very disappointing it missed my flight but more disappointing that it has taken so long to arrive. Failure on the airlines and service to get my luggage to date.

I wish the flight attendant was a little bit kinder

We missed the flight to Barcelona because the flight from Baltimore was delayed. We flew on Vueling VW6653. Our luggage didn’t arrive. Please help us get our luggage. We are staying at Hotel Gran Via in Barcelona

The seats were tiny, being of a fairly petite build, I don’t usually expect to feel crammed and cramped in a seat, but I definitely was on this flight. I couldn’t even bend over to get anything out from under the seat in front and getting up to go to the bathroom at night with the seat backs reclined was nearly impossible. I had to do gymnastics to get over and out. For an airline that does long flights overnight, it’s kind of ridiculous.

Not connecting flights. Missed my flight from Dublin to Liverpool because I arrived at Dublin one hour too late. For this mistake, they offered me a flight from Dublin to Manchester. Thats great and all, but I waste time and money to commute to Liverpool. Be sure to check the time of your connecting flights, because they sure don’t when they sell it to you

Excellent! Great flight attendants, good food (in business class, at least), very comfortable. Touchscreen and remote wasn’t great.

In economy and food was ok, but with limited leg space (and I was in a 2 seat configuration) it was difficult to eat with a tiny seat tray. I spilt wine on my trousers. First time on British Air (I usually fly Turkish Air) and in a 777. Heathrow was pleasant but changing terminals awkward.

Starting with the flight Cairo to London the plain was so poor no entertainment at all uncomfortable seats although it’s 5 hours long, then an American airline plain took me from London to Miami it was a bad experience the crew most of flight time not available and they asked us to help our selves for any snacks if we need. From Miami to London actually was perfect flight with a huge plain and perfect crew but from London to Cairo was horrible plain with stiff fixed seats not movable no entertainment or wi fi very poor Menu which is unacceptable for a business class

I've done hundreds of flights in my life, and this flight was one of the best I've ever taken, From beginning to end, everything went smoothly, professionally, and with a smile and friendly attitude from all employees I interacted with. The food was delicious (and free), as were the drinks. There was just a genial and effective way in the way that British Airways organized the flight -that reminded of days in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, when flying was a fun, and exciting adventure. I enjoyed and had confidence in the abilities of the flight crew, I'll be flying British Airways several more times this summer. Thank you so much for the great experience! Cheryl Olso

My baggage did not arrived with me. Took 3 days to get it after so may calls and follow up

Terrible! I missed my flight to my final destination and British airlines and American Airlines keep pointing fingers on each other’s. Nobody wants to take responsibility

Terrible. Flight was 3 hours delayed and I missed my other flight to my final destination

Do not sell your house, car or property, resign from your job or make non-refundable flight or other travel arrangements until you have received your immigrant visa.

If more information is needed

Sometimes a Consular officer is unable to make a decision on a visa application because he/she needs to review additional documents or the case requires further administrative processing. When additional documents are requested, the Consular officer will give you a refusal letter that asks you to submit additional documents. The letter will include instructions on how to send those documents to the Embassy.

Administrative processing takes additional time after the interview. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days. However, the timing varies based on the circumstances of each case. Before inquiring about the status of administrative processing, please wait at least 60 days after your interview.

What happens after visa approval

Passport, Visa, and Sealed Immigrant Packet – We will place your immigrant visa on a page in your passport. Please review your visa to make sure there are no spelling errors. We will also give you a sealed envelope containing documents that you must give to U.S. immigration authorities when you arrive in the United States for the first time. Do not open this envelope. You must carry it with you; do not put it in your checked luggage.

USCIS Immigrant Fee – All individuals who are issued immigrant visas overseas must pay an Immigrant Fee to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) prior to traveling to the United States. This fee is for processing your residency status and printing your Permanent Resident Card. The only people exempt from paying this fee are: children entering the United States under the Hague Process, returning residents, and people traveling on a K visa.

When You Should Travel – You must enter the United States before the expiration date on your visa, which is usually six months from the date of printing. Your visa cannot be extended and all fees are nonrefundable. The principal applicant must enter before or at the same time as other family members with visas. Children who turn 21 years old after visa issuance must enter the United States before they turn 21 years old; otherwise they will lose their immigrant status.

Getting a Green Card – Your Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card, will be automatically mailed to the address in the United States you write in your DS-260 visa application form. This is a very important document that proves you have permission to reside in the United States.  Do not travel outside of the United States until you receive your Permanent Resident Card. Once your card is issued, you should not stay outside of the United States for more than one year. If you do, you will lose your status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

Children’s Issues – Children are required to have certain vaccinations before they can enroll in school in the United States. Therefore, we recommend that you bring your child’s complete vaccination records with you to the United States. Additionally, if your child is adopted, you have full custody as a result of a divorce, or you share custody with the child’s other parent; we recommend that you bring a copy of all applicable adoption or custodial papers from the authoritative court in your home country. You will likely need these papers (translated into English) in the United States for issues such as school enrollment, medical care, and eventual citizenship.

Information for New Immigrants – Please visit the USCIS web page for helpful information on moving to the United States. You can read their publication “ Welcome to the United States: A Guide for New Immigrants ” online.

Diversity Visa - Additional Information

If you are interviewing for a Diversity Visa (DV), all of the above instructions apply to you. Please schedule and attend a medical examination prior to your visa interview; enroll in the required courier service; and gather the required documents.

Below are additional instructions that apply only to DV applicants.

Bring to your interview

In addition to the documents listed on the Pre-Interview Checklist in this package, DV applicants should also bring the following items to your visa interview:

  • Appointment information printed from the “Entrant Status Check” on the E-DV website .
  • Documents showing that you have either a qualifying high school education OR have two years of qualifying work experience in the last five years immediately prior to application (for the principal applicant only; more information is available online ).
  • Payment in cash of the $330 Diversity Visa Application Fee.

Review your DV Lottery entry

Prior to your visa interview, we recommend that you review the data on your initial E-DV entry. On your initial E-DV application, you must have correctly entered your marital status. If you are legally married you must have listed your spouse, even if you are currently separated from him/her (unless your spouse is a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident).

Additionally, you must have listed ALL of your living children who are unmarried and under 21 years old. This includes your natural children, your spouse’s children, or children you have formally adopted in accordance with the laws of your country.

Failure to have listed an existing spouse or children at the time of your entry in the Diversity Visa lottery will result in the denial of your visa and visas for your family. Any fees paid to the U.S. government in support of your visa application(s) are nonrefundable. If you failed to include a child who had already been born, or a spouse to whom you were married when you entered the lottery, you should not proceed with the visa application. You can review the eligibility requirements online .

Czech Republic’s top court rules that surgery is not required to officially change gender

PRAGUE (AP) — The Czech Republic’s highest court on Tuesday ruled to dismiss part of a law requiring people to undergo gender-affirmation surgery, including sterilization, in order to officially change their gender.

The Constitutional Court said the requirements are “unconstitutional” and “in conflict with the fundamental right of trans people to have protected their physical integrity and personal autonomy in connection with their human dignity.”

Only two of the court’s 15 judges opposed the verdict, which cannot be appealed. Lawmakers must change the affected sections of the law by the middle of next year.

The court ruled at the request of a person who was seeking a gender change. The authorities refused to register him as a man because he had not undergone surgery.

The Czech practice was criticized by LGBTQ+ rights groups.

The Czech Republic, also known as Czechia, was one of the last European Union countries to have such conditions in law.

Thankfully however, people are being urged to use this Google ‘cheat code’ to find the cheapest flights to get the f**k out of the UK and go abroad.

The hack previously went viral on TikTok as a user shared the simple trick, leading to many others finding incredible discounts.

And look, I’m not encouraging you to now go and be reckless and book a holiday purely because there’s cheap flights, but if you were already considering a trip, then this could be a real win.

It's a pretty useful trick. (TikTok/@aroundtheatlas)

Travel influencer @aroundtheatlas highlighted how handy Google Flights can be to look for deals.

Sure, using this site won’t be new to many people booking trips. However, the hack really shows itself when she clicks ‘anywhere’ and leaves the departure/arrival times blank.

Within seconds, the app brings up a map with cheap return flights from destinations across the globe – including long haul.

Examples include a return trip to Greece for just £39 or transatlantic travel to New York for £336.

Clearly surprised, she then asks her followers: “Does anyone else know about this, because I feel like the world is gatekeeping how insane this is!”

At the side of the screen, you’ll even get a breakdown of available dates, meaning it’s easier than ever to plan for your summer holidays.

Groups can also use this clever hack, as the app allows multiple people to travel at one time and still get amazing discounts.

The video quickly racked up the views as users went on to plan their next holiday using the trick.

One user even joked: “I could fly back and forth to Europe a couple times for less than it cost to get a train to London.”

Another quipped: “Going to Manchester more expensive than Barcelona.”

While someone else echoed: “I could fly back and forth a couple times for less than it cost to get a train to London.”

Others added: “Why’s a round trip to the US cheaper than my iPhone.”

Meanwhile, plenty thanked her ‘so much for sharing’ the trick as many tagged their friends to plan a holiday.

6 of the best European train routes for summer 2024

From scenic trains through Germany's Rhine Valley to sleeper services from Brussels to Prague, here are the best train routes for summer 2024 © Boarding1Now / Getty Images

Are you planning some European travel this summer? Me too. Getting from A to B by train has never felt so exciting, with a thrilling mix of new routes, classic journeys, and under-the-radar options to choose from.

Here are some of the most enticing European train journeys available for summer 2024. Some services kick in when summer timetables begin in June, while many are in operation now. Either way, it’s time to start planning!

1. There's a new service linking the Baltic capitals

Lithuania has been quietly building up international rail connections in recent years. A cross-border service to Warsaw and Kraków in Poland began in late 2022, and since December last 2023, it has been possible to travel between two of the Baltic capitals by direct train. The journey north from Vilnius to the capital of Latvia , Riga , takes 4 hours and 15 minutes and runs daily, making it a competitive alternative to the bus. Booking in advance is recommended, though. This new route through the Baltics is a precursor to a hoped-for extension towards Tallinn which would link the three capitals. Back in Vilnius, connecting with an onward train to Kaunas is possible.

How to book: Book online through LTG Link. Ticket prices start at €24.

2. Travel at high speed from Barcelona to Seville

Iryo, a recent entrant into Spain’s seemingly ever-expanding range of high-speed services, has established a foothold on the high-traffic Madrid to Zaragoza and Barcelona route. Its new offering extends from Barcelona and Madrid to the Andalucían cities of Córdoba and Seville , making the journey between the Catalan capital and Seville in 5 hours and 50 minutes. Using the same rolling stock as Trenitalia’s slick Frecciarossa trains, Iryo is also notable for an onboard food service that includes cheese and ham tapas and sustainably sourced Spanish wines to help the high-speed scenery flash past.

How to book: Tickets from €40 one way can be bought online through Iryo .

3. Take the night train from Brussels to Prague

Europe’s night train revolution continues to reshape the experience of traveling across the continent. Only last year, there was no option to reach Prague from the west by sleeper. Now, there are options to lull you to sleep from Paris or Brussels to Berlin , then onto Prague by lunchtime. One approach is the thrice weekly Austrian Nightjet service from Paris and Brussels to Berlin, where you change trains for Prague. More conveniently, there is the privately run European Sleeper train on alternate nights, which takes you all the way. Don’t expect too many frills, though: this train consists of older carriages leased from various train companies around Europe. You will, however, travel directly to Prague with a friendly train crew and enjoy a time-efficient, continent-spanning journey.

How to book: One-way tickets from Brussels to Prague on the European Sleeper start at €79 for seats, €109 for couchette space, €179 sleeper berth.

4. Scoot along İstanbul's Sirkeci seafront line

If ever a station was a shadow of its former self, it’s Sirkeci, sitting on the shores of the Bosphorus in İstanbul ’s Sultanahmet district . Best known as the one-time terminus for the fabled Orient Express trains, Sirkeci lost its long-distance services in 2013. While the city bustles around Sirkeci, the ground-level platforms have sat unused since, while the underground Marmaray railway flashes underneath the old city bearing travelers from Europe to Asia. There’s life in old Sirkeci yet though. The opening of the new 5.2-mile light rail service to Kazlıçeşme restores trains to the original trainshed. In time, these renewed tracks may even see a return of Sofia - and Bucharest -bound services to the banks of the Bosphorus rather than their less convenient departure point at Halkalı, the western end of the Marmaray line. For now, this is an excuse for nostalgically-minded travelers to hop on a train from one of Europe’s most storied stations, perhaps for a seafood meal in lively Kumkapi, one of the stops on the new line.

How to book: A journey on İstanbul’s trains costs around €0.50. Find out more about transport within İstanbul with our guide to getting around .

5. Ride the summer-only route from Budapest to Koper on Slovenia's Adriatic

Some journeys are so perfectly made for hot weather that they only exist during Europe’s hottest months. Pulling out of Budapest ’s Deli station – not to be confused with the more famous Keleti – the Citadella train noses its way every morning to the Slovenian border and onto the compact capital, Ljubljana . While the views on the Hungarian journey are less remarkable, the stretch of track running alongside the Sava River between Celje and Ljubljana introduces Slovenia’s natural beauty. Between June 16 and August 24, taking this train past the capital to Koper on the Slovene riviera is possible. Koper is home to a historic center stuffed with Venetian architecture and, combined with an unusual journey to get here, more than justifies being added to any central European plans this summer.

How to book:  Tickets cost from €22 one way and can be bought on the MÁV website .

6. Spend a month traveling Germany by train for just €49

One of the continent’s great travel deals can open up a host of slow journeys in Germany. For €49, travelers can purchase a Deutschlandticket for a month. The price includes regional and suburban (but not ICE or IC long-distance) services across Germany, plus buses, trams and subways. As well as covering urban exploration, this ticket is perfect for hopping around the Rhine and Moselle valleys , taking a tour of the Black Forest or exploring many of the Harz Mountain lines. It also opens up possibilities for some regional international services across borders. Even if you end up paying for the occasional inter-city service, you’ll still save money.

How to book: The Deutschlandtickets (€49 per month) are sold through the DB website , but they're not aimed at visitors, so buying one as a non-German resident can be fiddly. See Seat61's how-to  for the latest guidance.
