The issue of humans and simians in existential conflict arises again in a new “Planet of the Apes,” this time with a coming-of-age sci-fi adventure that’s a piece of visually stunning world-building more thoughtful than coherent.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (★★★ out of four; rated PG-13; in theaters Friday) is a sequel to the stellar “Apes” trilogy led by Andy Serkis’ iconic chimpanzee leader Caesar, set in a landscape where people have gone feral while super-smart apes rule thanks to a man-made virus. Director Wes Ball ( “Maze Runner” ) is a proven commodity in the post-apocalyptic space, and “Kingdom” aims to bring big ideas into a sprawling blockbuster atmosphere, though that gambit winds up weighed down by its own ambitions. 

The new “Apes” is set “many generations later” after the death of Caesar, a kind and compassionate sort who believed humans and apes could one day live together. His specter looms large over “Kingdom,” which centers on a naive young chimp named Noa (played via performance capture by Owen Teague) and an Earth where nature has reclaimed the land. Noa and his friends, Anaya (Travis Jeffery) and Soona (Lydia Peckham), ready for a big day in their lives among the Eagle Clan – so called because of the birds they raise. But the peaceful existence in their village is disrupted by a brutal attack from a horde of masked apes, who burn Noa’s home and leave him for dead.

Noa wakes, battered and vowing to save his friends and family who’ve been taken, and he first falls in with Raka (Peter Macon), a wise orangutan who lives by Caesar’s idealistic beliefs. They meet a young human named Mae (Freya Allan), who’s at first distrustful of her new allies until they save her from the same big bad apes that torched Noa’s village.

The trio learns these villains are goons for the tyrannical bonobo Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand). Ruling a coastal kingdom of apes, Proximus has taken Caesar’s name yet twists his words to force his prisoners to crack a large vault and plumb the mysterious human treasures within. He’s both a fan of mankind and a symbol of our innate cruelty in ape form.

Just like the previous films, the main draw is the apes themselves, computer-generated simian wonders who immerse audiences into their world. They look better than ever, with Noa’s tearful eyes delivering so much fragility and emotion in a close-up after a tragic scene, and the performance-capture wizardry, a signature aspect of these new "Apes" movies, feels more groundbreaking than ever.

At the same time, none of the major players in "Kingdom" reach the same level of acting or personality as Serkis’ Caesar. That is an extremely high bar, though, and there are some pretty great apes: Teague's Noa grows on you because of his plight while Macon makes Raka a scene-stealing hoot with a kind soul. Allan, a regular on Netflix’s “The Witcher,” also shines in a meaty role as a human who’s more complicated than she appears.

The early “Apes” movies from the ‘60s and '70s were defined by genre innovation and shock endings, and the Caesar movies were simply a great tale well told. “Kingdom” is less confident in its storytelling: It explores themes of legacy and species coexistence with a metaphor-laden plot that feels too long at 2½ hours, and it begs for more exposition at the beginning before overdoing it later on. The movie ultimately does satisfy by its end, even as it emphasizes philosophy and message over logical narrative choices.

“Kingdom” checks most of the boxes for longtime “Apes” fans, and newbies don’t need to any prior homework as a standalone story that mostly explains itself. And as humans, you do commiserate with the onscreen apes themselves, because everything felt a little better back when Caesar was around.

‘Lush, Thrilling Adventure’: Rave Reviews for ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’

20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters nationwide this weekend, and the film is already garnering rave reviews from critics.

Kingdom is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising its innovative special effects, scale, and cinematic beauty while proclaiming it one of the best editions in the iconic franchise.

The film — which brought in $6.6 million at the domestic box office in previews — takes place many generations after 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes and tells the story of a young ape’s harrowing journey across a new empire. It is the latest chapter in the Planet of the Apes franchise following three groundbreaking films, which have brought in a combined $1.6 billion globally.

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Review: The Post-Apocalyptic Franchise Continues to Evolve with Lush and Thoughtful New Adventure

“Many generations” have passed since Caesar united the apes in their fight against the human militias that sought to destroy them, and the centuries of peace have allowed them to begin developing a civilization on their own terms. Various colonies have formed across the continent, including one — the Eagle Clan — that has shaped its culture around the overgrown skyscrapers left behind from the days of man (the film ’s verdant, post-apocalyptic vision of the Pacific Northwest feels like a preview of what’s to come in season two of “ The Last of Us ”).

Young chimps like Owen Teague’s Noa scale the buildings as a rite of passage, searching for the perfect eagle egg they can take back to their village and raise as their own after it hatches. The only rule: The chimps always have to leave at least one egg in the nests they steal from, ensuring that the growth of their species won’t come at the total expense of another. 

It’s easy enough for the Eagle Clan to live in peace with the rest of the animal kingdom; apes are firmly at the top of the food chain, and threats to their survival are few and far between. Humans still exist, but their minds are so diminished by the negative effects of the virus that made the monkeys smarter that Noa’s tribe refers to them as “echoes.” The Eagle Clan are a curious group more interested in building aviaries than weapons, but even their elders don’t seem to know very much about the world around them. Maybe that’s a deliberate choice. Maybe that’s its own kind of wisdom. 

Please be advised that when I say “short” I’m referring more to the distance traveled than I am the time it takes Noa to reach his destination. Running an unhurried 145 minutes, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is actually the longest installment of its franchise, and Ball’s film — written by “War of the Worlds” scribe Josh Friedman — makes great use of that time by fleshing out the philosophical conflict that will consume this story once it finally arrives at Proximus’ impressive base (a beached oil tanker at the foot of a massive and impenetrable vault whose contents might allow apes to bridge several millennia of technological advancements in the blink of an eye). There are a few scattered and harrowingly staged bursts of action along the way, as Noa is hunted by Proximus’ aggro foot soldiers wherever he goes, but his brief adventure is less defined by danger than discovery. 

It no longer comes as a surprise that performance-capture tools are capable of rendering such well-shaded characters, or that skillful actors like Teague and Durand have enough trust in the process to give Wētā all the data its FX wizards need to make audiences forget they aren’t watching real apes, but it’s still remarkable to see a movie that uses it to tell a relatively contained story that mines so much of its drama from close-ups. James Cameron will likely always be in a league of his own when it comes to this stuff, but “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” doesn’t have the benefit of taking place on an alien world with alien heroes, nor does it fall back on the ballistic action that allowed the last two chapters of Reeves’ trilogy to lead with their spectacle. 

That ambivalence is reflected in the script’s choice of an antagonist, as the power-hungry Proximus isn’t just a self-interested brute who lords above anyone he deems inferior and takes pleasure in treating people the way that people once treated ape. In fact, he’s a fan of humans, to the point that he keeps William H. Macy around to read him Kurt Vonnegut novels and help him learn what he can about our species’ former greatness. Proximus is a student of history, he just lacks the perspective to appreciate how it tends to repeat itself, or to understand why arming his tribe to the teeth might not be the best way of fulfilling the promise that “apes together strong.” 

This is a far cry from the thrill-a-minute blockbuster that its early “summer” release date might lead you to expect (if the “Apes” franchise has always unfolded at a different register from the rest of its multiplex competition, that difference has never been more pronounced than it is here), and the pathos simply doesn’t run as deep as it did by the end of Reeves’ trilogy, but the final moments of Ball’s film make it easy to imagine that its sequels could reach similar dramatic heights. That’s ominous news for this franchise’s latest generation of characters, but heartening information for anyone who can appreciate the cognitive dissonance of a “Planet of the Apes” movie that leaves you with a renewed sense of hope for tomorrow.

Ape clans have taken up residence in the oasis that Caesar sought to colonize, but humans have reverted to their animalistic nature in their absence. Now battling between enslavement and freedom, outliers in the Ape clans will take sides in a newly burgeoning society.

Dawn is a gritty and grim survival thriller, while War is a chilly and bleak portrait of man's last stand against a growing ape empire. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues in this vein, mounting a rousing action-adventure in the crumbling ruins of the human world. Traces of Caesar remain, as do remnants of Andy Serkis' brilliant work on the franchise, but this is wholly a story about Noa (Owen Teague), an ape from the Eagle Clan that must save his family after disaster strikes and his whole world is burned down in front of him.

But echoes of the past and glimpses of the future flesh out this world..

Noa does not go on this journey alone. He meets Raka (Peter Macon), a wise Orangutan who passes on the word of Caesar as well as key information about the history of ape and human relations. The teachings of Caesar have become warped and twisted over time, the true meaning lost to most apes. No matter his efforts to bridge the gap between ape and human, Caesar's name is now used to spread violence and fear across a dawning empire, mythology into madness.

It's all a reminder of how important the past is, how it can be weaponized by some and protected by others, and how loyalty to the past can warp your vision of the future.

Nova/Mae (Freya Allan) has her own mythology, though. The mysterious human is different from the ones that Noa and his clan call "Echoes". She wears pants and a tank top instead of paleolithic-esque loincloths. She displays a curiosity and intelligence that Noa has never encountered. And, she can also talk, something humans haven't been able to do since the simian virus evolved.

The same war is destined to be fought over and over..

Allan gives a mostly silent performance and Mae is perhaps the most fascinating of the movie's characters by default. Her history is a big question mark, but so is everyone else's. The film doesn't specify how long it's been exactly since Caesar's reign, nor does it explore how Noa's tribe or Proximus Caesar's kingdom came to be. It's all a reminder of how important the past is, how it can be weaponized by some and protected by others, and how loyalty to the past can warp your vision of the future.

That future looks different for everyone, especially Proximus Caesar, whose ambitions remain murky until a genuinely surprising reveal. It's rare for a studio to not give away a film's third act in trailers, so it's refreshing that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes retains many of the surprises in its back half. It balances spectacle with the expansion of mythology in a way that feels natural — we are talking about a journey that takes place hundreds of years after War for the Planet of the Apes , so mythology is baked into the premise.

As promised, director Wes Ball sets up stories that will presumably be fleshed out in subsequent sequels. Luckily, Noa, Mae, and the new ape world are ripe for exploration. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes still explores only a fraction of the earth, but hints at a larger universe tease something even grander on the horizon. The film feels like a summer blockbuster in the best ways. Its familiar story doesn't undermine the emotional impact — "Apes together strong" hits as hard now as it did seven years ago.

Its mysterious adventure assuages any feelings of bloat in its two-and-a-half-hour runtime. Explosive action sequences are well-crafted and the special effects are on par with the groundbreaking motion-capture of the original reboot trilogy. Finally, a captivating epilogue provides some answers while asking questions that will hopefully be answered in the future. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a worthy start to this new era of primate domination — in the same way Rise became much more than it initially appeared, Kingdom is poised to take Apes to a new level while bringing it back to its science-fiction roots.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases in theaters on May 10. The film is 145 minutes long and rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence/action.
