legends of funk tour

By Lt. Col. Paula Z. Jones 50th Public Affairs Detachment The Legends of Funk tour consists of three popular R&B groups to include artists with gold and platinum-selling albums, number one hits on the Billboard and R&B charts and Grammy Award winners. Con Funk Shun, the Bar-Kays and the Dazz Band brought the crowd to their feet as they turned the clock back in time and played songs from the past. Members from the three bands played as one venerable "super-funk" band. "We wanted to give the Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and Marines a break to let them forget their surroundings and simply enjoy the music" said Michael Cooper lead singer and original Con Funk Shun band member since 1969. "We love everyone here. We felt we received - 200 percent appreciation from the audience which was totally unbelievable." The live band elated the audience with the melodic sound of a complete brass section, electric and bass guitars, keyboards, percussions for a real "old school" feel. The crowd went wild when favorite tunes such as "FFun," "Disco Dazz," "Joystick," "Straight from the Heart" and more were played. Seaman Jason Budai, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group, arrived two hours early to ensure he had front row seats. He said he and his Navy buddies had a lot of fun and will not forget this concert. Budai lead his buddies with his dance moves in front of the stage. He and Chief Petty Officer 3rd Class Wendell Shepherd were invited on stage to dance with the band. "I grew up with this music and [have been disc jockeying] for 10 years," Sheperd said. "These artists are real, know how to perform and get the audience involved. This music is great and I love the brass section. This music makes you move and I love it." Bobby Harris, lead vocalist for the Dazz Band reminded the audience that this tour has over 110 years of experience. The Bar-Kays have been together for 42 years, Con Funk Shun for 39 years and the Dazz Band for 32 years. "Meeting troops and performing in this environment has really been an eye opening experience," Harris said. During the show, the band dedicated a few songs to a few ladies in the audience. "Words can't describe how I feel about performing for the troops," said Larry Dotson, Bar-Kays lead vocalist. He was impressed that the leadership took the time to explain their mission and welcome them to the area. His most touching experience was visiting troops in the hospital. "It was good to put a smile on their face and made our visit worthwhile," Dotson said. The Legends of Funk are reaching younger audiences which also enjoy their music. "Our music is sampled by many hip-hop artists, used in television commercials and has also been featured in movies," Cooper said. "We also know that some of our younger audience listens to their parents' music and 'old school' music on the radio." The concert ended with an outstanding rendition of '"Let it Whip" which the crowd thoroughly enjoyed. For a few hours, the Soldiers could get away and relax with great music and entertainment before returning to duty. Legends of Funk will continue their tour with several concerts throughout Iraq. When asked if they would return for another concert, they all replied that it was so much fun, and warned the audience to look out for Legends of Funk II.

If you were confused about what this funk and soul collective were all about, let me tell you, it doesn’t take much to work it out, but I’ll explain it briefly: there’s a large group of musicians on stage living it up, playing an insane soul set.

Parliament-Funkadelic have been headed up by funk legend George Clinton ever since their formation in 1968, and sixteen of the most prominent members were initiated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as members of the collective in 1997.

Despite the chaotic nature of the number of members on one stage at any given time, P-Funk’s live shows are always a highlight. Performing a collection of their own tracks, covers, and solo work of the members, the rhythm will leave you mesmerised

Vocalist George Clinton’s ‘Atomic Dog’ is always a favourite of the set - but also ensure you become familiar with ‘Do That Stuff’, and ‘Mothership Connection’, to name a few, if you are to check out these guys live. I can assure you, you won’t be disappointed.

Parliament Funkadelic have put such a stamp on the funk and soul scene that ‘P-Funk’ has almost become a music genre in its own right, and any fan of funk will know about their work.

Good show. Me, wifey and friend had a pretty good time. I did have an issue with the flow of the show. No opening act that "opened" the show. No introduction for Clinton and the rapper and r&b singer in the middle of the show really threw the vibe off and people started to leave. It took a little time to get back on vibe but it ended up well. Clinton should have had them as opening acts, and let the band play during intermission. But all and all I finally had a (watered down) Clinton experience and I was overall satisfied.

Jersey funk legends Kool and the Gang 'blessed' to play Sea Hear Now at Jersey Shore

B ruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are not the only New Jersey group in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame playing the Sea Hear Now festival in Asbury Park this weekend.

Kool and the Gang are also on the bill. The Jersey City funk legends are scheduled to take the Surf Stage at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15.

“We just love to do the thing and do it with all the party and funk and fun and joy,” said band keyboardist and music director Curtis Williams.

Kool and the Gang were fonuded in 1964 by brothers Ronald Bell and Robert “Kool” Bell, with neighborhood friends Robert “Spike” Mickens, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Ricky Westfield, George Brown and Charles Smith.

There have been two primary phases of Kool & the Gang’s career: They were the funk superstars of the 1970s who pumped out hits like “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging,” and the suave R&B popsters fronted by former lead singer James “J.T.” Taylor who rolled out Top 10 smashes such as “Celebration,” “Ladies Night,” “Too Hot,” “Joanna” and “Cherish.”

Williams, a family friend from Buffalo, joined in 1981 when he was 18.

“The guys are iconic genius-level minds on all the styles,” Williams said. “They're heavily influenced by jazz, but they incorporate that into funk, hip-hop — and there's a depth of music that even if some of it takes a pop approach, there’s still a depth there. ... Growing up with these ambassadors of music was incredible.”

The band recently lost some family members. Ronald Bell, aka Khalis Bayyan, passed away in 2020; Thomas in 2021; and Brown, the band's original drummer and pivotal songwriter, passed way last year. A posthumous album from Brown, “Where I’m Coming From,' will be released Friday, Sept. 13.

The album's jazzy rhythms are warming, the melodies caress, and the musically is expansive without losing its earthly texture.

Williams, who appears on the album, and Brown developed a friendship right from beginning.

“They would pick me up and then pick up George and we’d pull into this beautiful complex and I'd say, 'Gee, this is nice,' ” said Williams of Brown's former pad in the Galaxy Towers of Guttenburg, just outside of Manhattan. “I never thought I would live there but that’s the thing — he and I would ride so often, and we just talked about life and all kinds of stuff. His mind was so broad.”

Williams eventually moved into the towers.

“They had three towers,” Williams said. “George was way up in the 40s; our guitarist, Kool's brother, Amir Bayyan, lived there, too. I was only on the ninth floor. I didn’t move my way up to the penthouse floors.”

Sea Hear Now begins Saturday, Sept. 14. Springsteen and the E Street Band also play on Sunday, Sept. 15. Other performers include Noah Kahan, the Gaslight Anthem, the Trey Anastasio Band, the Black Crowes, Norah Jones, 311, the Revivalists, the Hives and more on the fest’s three stages on the North Beach and in Bradley Park.

Kool and the Gang, still led by Kool, will be inducted into the Rock Hall on Saturday, Oct 19, at the Rocket Mortage FieldHouse in Cleveland. Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest are joining them.

In Asbury Park, DJ Prince Hakim, aka Kool's son, will be joining the band for “Jungle Boogie.”

“It’s joyful for us and we’re so blessed to be able to travel the world and even get to the Jersey Shore and just share the different avenues of music Kool and the Gang have,” Williams said. “A combination of funk, jazz, pop, rock and we bring it all — and we bring it with love and joy.”

Go : Sea Hear Now, noon to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, and 11:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, North Beach and Bradley Park, 1300 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park, sold out; seahearnow.com .

The Best Funk Bands/Artists

Coley Reed

Vote on the best funk bands and artists.

The groove is undeniable when it comes to funk music—thumping bass lines, syncopated rhythms and a flair for blending soul, jazz, and R&B into an irresistible dance-inducing mix. This list celebrates the best funk bands of all time, inviting funk enthusiasts to weigh in on these soulful maestros. For decades, funk artists have had people of all backgrounds strutting their stuff on the dance floor, and it's fascinating to see which bands make fans want to get up and shake it down the hardest.

Funk burst onto the scene in the 1960s and hasn’t stopped making us move since. The genre experienced a golden era in the '70s and '80s, but even as a niche category, funk's influence spread far and wide. With time, funk evolved, borrowing from rock and electronic influences to create fresh sounds that stayed true to its energetic roots. The best funk bands have a way of bringing listeners together with their infectious grooves that are universal in their appeal.

When it comes to those at the top, the discussion must include icons like George Clinton, the funk juggernaut of Parliament Funkadelic, the unexpected edge of Red Hot Chili Peppers, the incomparable Prince, and soulful songstress Teena Marie. Acts like Kool & the Gang and Herbie Hancock have left a permanent mark on the genre, laying down tracks that have had lasting impacts. This isn't just about recognizing household names; it's about honoring the quality and impact of the music these bands produced.
