There’s some stellar support for both performances too, with The Last Shadow Puppets and The Rascals frontman Miles Kane who recently performed with Blossoms at Brixton Academy, whilst Manchester will see support from local legends Inspiral Carpets.

Only last week Blossoms finished up on their twenty three date sold out UK tour- and received raving reviews from ‘ The show of their lives  – 5*’ from Evening Standard and Rolling Stone UK nodding to the band as ‘ one of the UK’s most consistently impressive live acts ’.

  • Peter Kay announced more UK tour dates- including an extra date in Leeds

  • McFly to play headline show at Leeds Millennium Square 2023

Since forming in 2013, Blossoms have gone from strength to strength and quilckly asserted themselves as one of the UK’s most recognisable artists- especially here in the north.

Topping the charts fro two consecutive weeks and BRIT Award and Mercury Prize nominations from their 2016 debut  Blossoms , the band reached number four in the UK charts with 2018’s  Cool Like You.

Since then, the band have worked their way up to five top 5 albums, including their  In Isolation / Live From The Plaza Theatre, Stockport  release, Ode To NYC ,  The Sulking Poet  and  Care For and LP  Ribbon Around The Bomb .

Blossoms at Millennium Square review: The rain didn't stop the indie party

Blossoms were supported by Miles Kane at their Sounds of The City gig at Millennium Square in Leeds city centre

That old cliche of the rain not dampening spirits might never have been truer than when Blossoms headlined Millennium Square.

If you were out and about in Leeds on Saturday the chances are you’ll have encountered one of the multiple downpours in the city. But while the cricketers over at Headingley couldn’t stump it, there was no stopping thousands cramming into Millennium Square for an indie party. Many bouncing joyously in their ponchos.

Things were looking rather bright and cheery when Miles Kane delivered his 11-song support set. As well as his solo favourites, including Come Closer, Inhaler and Coup de Grace, the masses were also treated to some unexpected pleasures in the form of Aviation and Standing Next to Me. Hits from The Last Shadow Puppets, the side project of Kane and Alex Turner , alas there was no appearance by the Arctic Monkeys frontman.

Review: Pet Shop Boys at Leeds First Direct Arena

Mere moments after Tom Ogden led Blossoms, Leeds Festival faves, on to the stage the heavens opened and the showers were pretty biblical. Much like their fans, the Blossoms boys embraced their surroundings and delivered a set which will likely be one of the highlights of the Leeds city centre outdoor venue’s summer series - despite the conditions.

You likely saw Blossoms team up with Rick Astley at Worthy Farm for their Glastonbury tribute to The Smiths. On Saturday, there were occasional cries of ‘Astley, Astley, Astley’ to the tune of Smiths’ hit Ask but he didn’t appear.

Instead, rightfully so, Ogden remained in the spotlight. Ogden, who has developed his stagecraft more and more in recent times, was quick to point out the significance Leeds has played in the Manchester’s band’s past. The frontman gave a shout out to Nathan at the city’s legendary Brudenell Social Club - he talked at some length about the venue's backstage curry.

Early Blossoms hits Getaway and Blow fitted well in the set alongside newer offerings such as Oh No (I Think I’m in Love) and My Swimming Brain. But, of course, their calling card Charlemagne, which ended the fun at Millennium Square, received the biggest reaction of the night. Some even discarded their ponchos when the song’s unmistakable opening beat dropped.

If you missed Blossoms in Leeds, you don’t have long to wait to see them in Yorkshire again. They will be performing at Tramlines Festival in Sheffield which takes place the weekend of Friday, July 21 and Sunday, July 23.

Blossoms announce Manchester & Leeds gigs for 2023

Blossoms

Blossoms will play two outdoor headline UK shows in July 2023, as part of the Sounds Of The City concert series. The band will play Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl on Thursday 6 July and Leeds’ Millennium Square on Saturday 8 July. Support for the Manchester show comes from Inspiral Carpets , while Miles Kane who recently performed with Blossoms at Brixton Academy will support the band in Leeds.

Tickets are on sale now from this page on Ticketmaster .

Last week Blossoms concluded a sold out, twenty three date UK tour to a rapturous response from fans and critics alike. Rolling Stone UK called the band ‘ one of the UK’s most consistently impressive live acts ’ and the Evening Standard described their London gig as, ‘ The show of their lives – 5*’.

Blossoms’ 2022 UK Number 1 album Ribbon Around The Bomb was produced by their consistent and renowned collaborators James Skelly and Rich Turvey and revolves around a central character ‘The Writer’. The creative direction for the album and its videos was developed by Edwin Burdis, Arctic Monkeys’ Creative Director, who worked with the band on their Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino and AM albums. Burdis also directed an accompanying film for Ribbon Around The Bomb which featured performances from the band and premiered at Stockport Plaza around the album’s release in April.

Since forming in 2013, Blossoms have enjoyed widespread success and acclaim. Their 2016 debut Blossoms topped the album charts for two consecutive weeks and went on to earn the band BRIT Award and Mercury Prize nominations, while 2018’s Cool Like Yo u charted at Number 4 in the UK album chart, spawning the anthemic singles I Can’t Stand It , There’s A Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls) and How Long Will This Last? Their third studio album, 2020’s Foolish Loving Spaces was the band’s second UK Number 1 album, while their recent, fourth studio LP Ribbon Around The Bomb gave the band their third UK Number 1 album, with the album’s standout tracks Ode To NYC , The Sulking Poet and Care For already well established as firm fan favourites. Blossoms have now had five top 5 albums in the UK, including their In Isolation/Live From The Plaza Theatre, Stockport release.

Recent tour reviews

I've seen Blossoms 4 or 5 times but this time at Brixton Academy, they were definitely more slick with more lighting and improved sound quality. However, there is very little chat between songs but they do get the crowd on their side immediately. If you like a good indie type band then I recommend Blossoms.

Will definitely see them again. It's good to see how they are progressing.

I became aware of Blossoms about a year ago, heard a few songs on the radio but never really listened to their first album but I absolutely loved ‘I Can’t Stand It’, the first release of their new album ‘Cool Like You’ so when I saw they were performing at the O2 Forum Kentish Town I booked a couple of tickets and so glad I did.

They were sat next to us in the restaurant before the gig and they are such nice guys.

Incredibly impressed with their performance, musically and vocally they were flawless, the guitar changes were slick. I would say this is the best live performance I’ve ever seen, in 25 years of concert going. They seem to have an huge stage presence and calm maturity, I hope they go far.

Will definitely be keeping an eye out for future gigs.
