The Complete Guide to Kalsubai Peak Trek

Kalsubai Peak is a very popular trek in the Sahyadri region. It is the highest peak in Maharashtra at 5,400 ft and is easily accessible both from Mumbai and Pune. The trek offers a breathtaking combination of natural environments like waterfalls, forests, grasslands, and historic forts.

The Kalsubai Temple at the summit of the peak draws people from the nearby villages throughout the year. The trek starts from Bari village. Walk through the village on the path that leads straight through it, without taking any of the turns that you come across.

Once you leave the village behind, the trek begins with a walk through some fields. Take a right after you reach the end of the hutments. In monsoon, there will likely be a stream flowing here. You will need to cross this and continue walking through the fields.

Walk through the farmlands where a variety of rice like Indraini, Kolum, and Tukda are grown. Wheat and green vegetables like Tandul are also cultivated. The trail passes through one or two villager houses and dhabbas. There are some steep ascents in this section.

The path naturally turns upwards to the left after the fields. The trail now becomes a little rocky. It is well shaded by trees. The first small ascent leads you to the temple of a local deity. This is an ideal place for some quick rest.

Best time To Do The Kalsubai Peak Trek

The trek is open throughout the year with each season having a different landscape. So choose the best time depending on what you would like to experience.

July to September is the monsoon season. You get to see lush green landscapes and experience trekking in heavy rain. Although the monsoon season is the peak season it gets extremely crowded with about 2000- 3000 people on the trail.  It gets very slippery and risky due to the slushy trail. It is very difficult to get clear views too so it's best to avoid this season.

September and October are the flowering seasons. These autumn months give clear views of the surrounding peaks and forts. You get to experience walking on grasslands with a vast variety of flowers. The same variety of flowers found in the Kaas plateau is also found here. Snake lovers get to see some rare species on the iron ladders.

Night hikes are best from November to April when the weather is perfect to witness the spectacular sunrise from the summit. It can get a bit chilly so carry a light jacket.

May and June are the pre-monsoon months. The clouds form interesting patterns, also look out for the fireflies!

➤ How to Get Fit for the Trek

The Kalsubai Peak trek is classified as a Moderate grade trek . From Bari Village at 2400 feet, you will gain approximately 3000 feet in altitude.

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for a Moderate grade trek in 4 weeks.

Cardiovascular endurance.

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace every day in the following manner –

  • Target completing a brisk walk of 5 km in 45 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by walking 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce jogging into your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you jog in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 37 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 15 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 20 km in one hour.

Strength Training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and its variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength-

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however light can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, and lower back muscles regularly promote relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

Kalsubai Trek: A Thrilling Journey to Maharashtra’s Highest Peak

Table of Contents

Introduction

Picture this: you’re hanging in the air, between the earth and the sky, supported by nothing but a ladder. It’s a moment that defines adventure, one that tests your boundaries, celebrates your bravery and etches itself into your very being. My Kalsubai trek was all about these moments, and I can’t wait to take you along on this extraordinary journey.

Kalsubai Trek

Historical Perspective

To fully appreciate the grandeur of Kalsubai, you must first understand the heights it reaches. Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra, India, and it reaches an elevation of 1,646 meters (5,400 feet) above sea level. This Kalsubai peak height isn’t just a number; it’s the heart and soul of this mountain, showcasing the rugged beauty of the Western Ghats.

But Kalsubai’s significance goes beyond its impressive height. People have been coming here for ages to pay their respects to the local goddess. The name “Kalsubai” itself derived from a village woman named Kalsu who took up the challenging task of scaling the mountain. She couldn’t complete the task, but her efforts earned her the name of the mountain. Some cool stories and legends make this place even more special. It’s not just a trek; it’s a cultural journey.

How to reach Kalsubai Trek

Now, before we delve into the heart of this journey, let’s talk about how you can actually get to Kalsubai. If you’re in Mumbai or Pune, you’re in for a treat because Kalsubai isn’t too far away. You can opt for a scenic bus ride or choose to drive, both promising a delightful journey.

The trek kicks off from Bari, the base village of Kalsubai. Reaching Bari is relatively straightforward. If you’re relying on public transport, catch a bus to Igatpuri, a town located close to Bari. From Igatpuri, you can easily hire a local vehicle to reach Bari, the starting point of your trek.

If you have the luxury of your wheels, driving to Bari offers flexibility, allowing you to set your pace and make impromptu stops to admire the scenic beauty of the region. The journey covers approximately 165 kilometers from Mumbai to Bari and typically takes around three to four hours, depending on factors like traffic and road conditions.

Best Time to Visit Kalsubai Trek

The prime trekking season for Kalsubai peak trek is during the cool, pleasant months of November to February. It is when the weather is just right, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. During these months, the landscape surrounding Kalsubai is a lush green, offering a beautiful contrast to the rocky terrain. The trek becomes a delightful adventure where the elements are in your favor.

However, it’s best to avoid Kalsubai peak during the monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September. The heavy rainfall during these months can transform the trails into slippery, muddy paths, making navigation challenging and potentially risky. While the monsoon does bring about greenery and the sight of waterfalls, it’s not the safest time to undertake the trek. Safety first, as they say!

Kalsubai Peak – Trek to the highest peak of Maharashtra (INR 600)

amazing landscape view Kalsubai highest peak of Maharashtra

There are few peaks in the state of Maharashtra which I have trekked multiple times. One amongst them is the Kalsubai Peak – The highest peak of Maharashtra, also known as “Everest of Maharashtra”. But why do I return to the same peak again for trekking? The main reason is to keep myself fit which additionally causes me to stay weariness free amid my long excursions.

breathtaking view from Kalsubai highest peak of Maharashtra

View from Kalsubai- Highest peak of Maharashtra

So, can travel a lot be tiring? Truly, it can be. Traveling implies holding your body upright in an assortment of ungainly positions for quite a while. Energy is utilized holding those positions, regardless of whether your body is lashed in. A year ago when I was exploring the parts of Northeast India for about a month, I began feeling fatigue following a couple of days of traveling. What I realized is that if you are more into daily exercises (running, swimming, cycling, trekking), you can minimize the tiredness.

Standing at an elevation of 1646 meters, Kalsubai Peak’s summit is the highest point in Maharashtra . It lies within the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary and offers a breathtaking view of the nearby forts and the Bhandardara dam. The trek is little difficult, yet with little exertion, anybody can achieve the summit.

How to reach Kalsubai Peak base village from Pune – Mumbai

The cheapest way to reach Kalsubai Base Village “Bari” is via railways and roadways bus . The nearest railway station to Bari is Igatpuri which is around 32 kms from the base village. Igatpuri railway station is well connected to major Indian cities (Mumbai, Pune, Varanasi, Bhusaval, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Aurangabad) via railways.

Once you reach Igatpuri, you can catch a state transport bus for Bari village (INR 40). What I would suggest is stay overnight at Bhandardara (around 13 kms away from Bari) and catch an early morning bus from Bhandardara to Bari village (5:30 AM – INR 10). You can put your tent near Bhandardara dam and do camping.

My journey to Kalsubai Peak – Highest peak of Maharashtra

It was my second visit to the Kalsubai peak. Right around two years back, when I initially climbed this peak, it was indeed very challenging for me to reach the summit of the highest peak of Maharashtra. In route to the summit, I thought of quitting a dozen times, but at the end after a lot of efforts, I finally made up to the top in around 3 hours.

It has almost been a year since I am regular into running marathons, cycling, swimming, and trekking. I knew that it would be a little easy for me to trek the highest peak of Maharashtra compared to my previous visit. Earlier it was a solo journey but this time I was accompanied by few of my friends. One among them Hiren Patel is an Ironman finisher , and I knew it would be very exciting to trek with him.

We took the Pune BSL express which starts from Pune around 11:45 AM and reaches Igatpuri around 5:15 PM. From Igatpuri, we took a bus for Bhandardara which takes about an hour to reach the same. We arranged the firewood and tent from the locals and set it up close to the dam side. I still remember the essence of the scrumptious Maggi we cooked over there alongside tea and enjoying the music.

Early morning (5:30 AM), we took a bus from Bhandardara to reach the Bari Village – The base of Kalsubai peak. It was still dark when we started our trek; thanks to the mobile flashlight which helped us a lot to find the route. We wished to see the sunrise at least from some height, so we started trekking at a decent pace. The view of the sunrise was simply amazing.

If you are trekking in the monsoon season, you need to be a bit more careful as the route becomes quite slippery. Few times during the trek, you would feel like you have made it to the summit, but that won’t be the case. ☺  At the top, there is temple named ‘Kalsubai temple’ named after a lady Kalsubai. It is believed that she vanished close to the mountain while endeavoring to get away from her employer’s persevering torment.

From the top, the view of the surrounding region is absolutely outstanding with Bhandardara dam in the vicinity. It took me about 1 hrs. 40 min to make to the top and around 40 min to descend all the way back. I was exceptionally satisfied as it took only 2 hours and 20 min to ascend and descend the highest peak of Maharashtra compared to approx. 5 hours which I took on my previous attempt.

Best time to visit Kalsubai Peak

Without any doubt, the monsoon months from July to September are the best time to trek Kalsubai, the highest peak of Maharashtra. The surroundings are lush green with numerous waterfalls in the vicinity. Also, the winter months from October to February is a good time to trek this peak. Avoid summers, as it becomes very hot during the daytime.

Food and stay options at Kalsubai peak

There are few dhabbas at the base village Bari, where you can get the local Maharashtrian Food. Also, there are lots of stalls in between where the local villagers sell lemon juice, tea, biscuits, chips etc. But I would advise you to take some eatables along with you as well.

If you thinking to stay overnight, you can either set up the tent on the top or somewhere on the route to the summit. Also, there are few budget options available at the base village Bari. I would suggest you stay near the Bhandardara dam and enjoy camping over there.

The Plateau Walk
