How it unfolded

Juan Pedro López (Lidl-Trek) moved into the overall lead at the Tour of Alps after he soloed to victory in Schwaz on stage 3. On a gloomy day of rain and cold in Austria, the Spaniard produced a sparkling attack to claim his first professional win, while Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers) surrendered his green jersey despite a fine display at the head of the chasing group behind in third place.

The winning move was sparked by Giulio Pellizzari (VF-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) near the top of the ascent of Pillberg with 27km remaining. López immediately jumped across to the Italian, and the pair struck up a solid working alliance on the rugged terrain that followed.

López and Pellizzari held a lead of more than 40 seconds after the penultimate climb of Weerberg, and they retained that advantage as they tackled Pillberg for the second and final time.

After Pellizzari withstood López’s first attack, the Spaniard kicked again two kilometres from the summit, this time forging clear alone. He maintained his buffer on the 4km drop to the line to claim stage victory, 22 seconds clear of Pellizzari.

The green jersey group was whittled down dramatically on the last two climbs, with Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) among those to lose contact. In his absence, Foss had to do the bulk of the pace-making on the ascents, and the Norwegian performed his task admirably. Although he was unable to reel López back in, he snuffed out an attack from Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) and reduced the green jersey group to just a handful of riders that included Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) and Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale).

Foss would later win the sprint for third place, 38 seconds down on López. In the overall standings, López holds a lead of 31 seconds over Foss, with O’Connor lying third at 45 seconds.

"It was an amazing day for me, because it's my first pro victory," López said. "But it was a really shit day for everybody, because we started with rain and 4°C. It was one of the hardest days on the bike in my life.

"We started with one objective, which was not to get cold, but that was impossible. At the end I changed to the other objective, I tried to go for the stage. In the beginning, I didn't feel good, I couldn't feel my hands. But in the end, my legs felt good, which is the most important thing, no?"

Steady rain and temperatures of 4°C greeted the peloton on Wednesday's stage around Schwaz, which had a slightly earlier start to avoid a broadcast clash with the finale of Flèche Wallonne. Neither the early hour nor the miserable conditions served to deter Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), who powered away in the opening kilometres and settled into a lone raid off the front.

The lack of company did little to deter Ganna, whose solo effort served a dual purpose. His presence off the front meant that his Ineos teammates didn't have to work to defend Tobias Foss' green jersey, and it also served as a most useful work-out for the Hour Record holder ahead of the Giro d'Italia.

Ganna established a maximum lead of 3:30 during his extended, televised training session, with DSM-Firmenich PostNL performing much of the pace-making in the peloton behind. The gap began to drop, however, on the approach to the day's main difficulties, the two laps over the category 2 climbs of Weerberg and Pillberg.

Ganna dropped inside three minutes with 40km remaining, and the gap shrank more quickly once the road began to climb the Weerberg. The Italian survived over the top, but he would be swept up on the lower slopes of the Pillberg as DSM continued their pace-making.

The racing among the GC contenders sparkled into action a couple of kilometres from the top of the Pillberg, where Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) tested the waters with an attack that splintered the green jersey group and appeared to put Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) in difficulty.

Bardet was quickly reeled in, with Foss controlling affairs, but that didn't quell the attacking. Giulio Pellizzari (VF-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) was the next to try his luck, and when the Italian pressed clear, Juan Pedro López (Lidl-Trek) bounded across in pursuit. The pair crested the summit with 20 seconds or so in hand on the green jersey group, and they combined well to extend that buffer as they swung around to take on the pair of climbs for a second time.

By now, Thomas was working in the green jersey group on behalf of Foss, though Pellizzari and López were still stretching out their lead, which reached 50 seconds on the approach to the penultimate climb.

Pellizzari and López still had 40 seconds in hand when they crested the summit, while the green jersey group was reduced to just 20 or so riders after Foss himself put in a long turn on the ascent, with Thomas losing contact more definitively near the summit.

By now, López and Pellizzari were growing in confidence, and they hit the foot of the last, 3.2km ascent of Pillberg still with 40 seconds over their pursuers. López looked to shake off his companion with an early acceleration, but Pellizzari held firm on the lower slopes.

2km from the summit, however, López kicked again, and this time the Spaniard managed to open a gap over Pellizzari as he set off in pursuit of his first professional victory.

Back in the green jersey group, meanwhile, Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) jumped on the offensive on the ascent, opening a small gap. Foss, now without Thomas, took up the reins of pursuit, and men like Bardet were content to let the Norwegian perform the bulk of the heavy lifting as he reeled Poels back in.

Foss' effort didn't make any inroads into López's lead, but it did serve to whittle down the green jersey group still further. By the time he reached the summit with 4.5km to go, he had just seven riders for company – Bardet, Ben O'Connor, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Aurélien Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Poels, Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) and Iván Sosa (Movistar).

The Norwegian would lose the jersey at day's end, but his pace-making has nonetheless helped to refine the list of challengers for overall victory ahead of Thursday's pivotal stage over the Passo del Vetriolo to Borgo Valsugana.

Raceverslag It takes roughly 35 kilometres for the breakaway to take shape. Then Alessandro De Marchi, Simon Pellaud, Lukas Pöstlberger and Yuma Koishi join forces. Patrick Gamper and Atusuhi Oka make it six at the helm and they race to a lead of of 4.20 minutes on the Brenner Pass. Oka loses contact in the climb.

Koishi is the second rider to de dropped, while Pöstlberger can’t follow the pace inside the last 40 kilometres.

Gamper goes solo with 33 kilometres remaining. At first, the peloton opens the chase, but then they slow down.

De Marchi and Pellaud regain contact with Gamper on the Gnadenwald climb, and leave him behind. De Marchi heads out alone in the last 3 kilometres of the ascent and he reaches the summit 30 seconds ahead of Pellaud.

He extends his lead on the flat to win the 2nd stage solo, while Tobias Foss keeps the leader’s jersey.

How to walk the Tour des Combins, the best long-distance hike in the Alps

For a different side of a classic, the Alps have no shortage of lesser-known walking trails and alternative hiking experiences, leading to towering peaks and gentle meadows. Along the way, pick up new skills, meet welcoming locals and form friendships to last a lifetime.

“We’ll never be as popular as the Tour du Mont Blanc, and we’d never expect to be,” says mountain instructor Melanie Müri, as steaming bowls of apple and celeriac soup are passed down the long, wooden table. “But there’s so much untapped potential in this landscape.” We’re in the dining room of Cabane de Chanrion, a mountain hut set at an altitude of 8,077 feet below snow-speckled summits and razor-edge arêtes, narrow rock ridges that separate valleys with fang-like pinnacles. The hut’s stripped-back, pale-wood interior makes showpieces of the oversized windows, beyond which butterflies dance among the blue gentian flowers and marmots whistle. It’s a scene of playfulness and stark stillness, all in one.

Melanie has cut to the heart of an uneasy conundrum. I’m on day three of a six-day loop from the small Swiss village of Bourg-St-Pierre following the Tour des Combins, a 63-mile trail circumnavigating the little-known Grand Combin massif — a glaciated mountain range in southwest Switzerland’s Valais canton, straddling the border with Italy. Like Melanie, many locals in this corner of the Alps are torn: they covet recognition yet fear its consequences. They want to share this region’s treasures but also cherish its quietness. It’s a contradiction as sharp as the towering peaks outside.

Some critics argue such balance has eluded Mont Blanc — which, at 4,800 metres, is western Europe’s highest peak — none more so than Jean-Marc Peillex, mayor of Saint-Gervais, a village nestled at its foot. He made local headlines last summer after threatening to sue two hurluberlus (fools) who slept at the summit, flouting a law that prohibits camping throughout the 7,800-acre Mont Blanc natural protection zone. It was set up in 2020 with the aim of safeguarding the local environment by regulating activities in the face of a visitor swell.  

The challenge of reining back tourism on the ‘roof of Europe’, as Mont Blanc is known, might be tougher than its ascent: some 20,000 climbers bid for the summit each year, and tens of thousands more set foot on the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB).  

A 105-mile, cross-country loop around the peak, the TMB is often cited as one of the world’s best mountain trails, as well as an Alpine rite of passage. But it was a different sort of baptism I’d experienced when starting the Tour des Combins. On the first day, a storm drenched the rolling pastures as I set off in blissful solitude. It was a game of cat and mouse between hiker and weather: when the thunder rumbled, I dove for cover inside an abandoned shepherd’s shelter; when the dark clouds subsided, I got my miles in quickly before the next downpour.  

At the end of the 12-mile stage, with 4,100 feet of ascent in the bag, I sat back in the wood-panelled dining room of Cabane Brunet, dipping boiled potatoes into melted cheese. It had been a stuttering start, but I felt refreshed in more ways than one.

Coming full circle

The next morning, I set off from Cabane de Chanrion with Eloi Rossier, the grey-haired, long-standing president of the Association du Tour des Combins, hiking over steep, rock-strewn terrain to the 2,797-metre Fenêtre de Durand. This pass threads the eye of the needle between the sweeping ridges of Mont Gelé and Mont Avril — every twist, every turn, every stride unveiling new views. As I top out onto its rocky saddle in glorious midday sunshine, the 4,314-metre Grand Combin de Grafeneire is on the horizon, seemingly congratulating my lung-busting, calf-burning efforts.

The snowy summit of this Alpine leviathan is a constant presence on the Tour des Combins. “It’s higher and more Alpine, and you get high-quality but simple hospitality,” says Eloi when I ask how this trek compares to the TMB. “But we’re not in competition. We can be complementary, and, of course, people can walk both tours if they desire.”

Eloi may sound modest, but there are big plans in store for the Tour des Combins, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. A longer version — the 80-mile, eight-day Grand Tour des Combins — could be ready for its first hikers as early as next year. It will take in a night at Rifugio Frassati, which was built by volunteers in Italy’s Aosta Valley, and a hike past the trio of Alpine tarns at Lacs de Fenêtre, a Swiss lake.

Meanwhile, a promotional push is underway for the original route. It has much going for it: the length is perfect for a week-long trip, and there are convenient public transport links to Geneva. Although steep, the terrain is more than achievable for any competent hillwalker, and the route itself has all the ingredients to make it a bona fide trekking classic — suspension bridges above glaciers, Tolkien-like moonscapes and water bodies, flowing and frozen. Once word gets out, stemming the flow of visitors may prove trickier than selling the dream. “We want more visitors,” Eloi says, “but not too many. Definitely not too many.”

For the time being, I’m alone on the trails, and by now, I’ve settled into a routine. Each day, I climb up brutally steep saddles: I spot a horned ibex silhouetted atop a ridgeline; wispy clouds embracing the tops of giants; and icy-blue meltwater gushing from a glacier outflow. Each night, I share tales and mountain grub with fellow hikers met in yet another Alpine hut, each with a location as picturesque as the last.

A particular highlight is Hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard, which I visit the following day. This historic refuge is best-known for accommodating Napoleon Bonaparte’s 40,000-strong army in 1800 — a visit that saw the kitchen serve up an incredible 21,724 bottles of wine and some 3,498lbs of cheese.

I feel I could consume a similar amount of food the next day, on the last leg of the trek. After a rocky descent of the Pas des Chevaux, a narrow old mule path weaving over craggy ground and fields of boulders, I loop back to Bourg-St-Pierre. “La boucle est bouclée,” says Sophie Dorsaz, one of my mountain instructors for the trip.

“The circle is complete.” As I look back at my time on the trail, the days as hazy as the dawn horizon, I reflect on another journey — that of the Alpine destinations that were hungry for attention, then bent under the influx of visitors and now want to find a sweet spot. It seems I’m not the only one to have come full circle.

Pour ce match retour des play-offs, l’Elan Béarnais qui est septième au classement reçoit à leur tour Vichy, deuxième en Pro B au Palais des sports. Une rencontre au sommet puisque si les Vichyssois l’emportent, c’est un ticket décroché vers les demi-finales. Reste à voir si les Palois se laisseront faire, club historique avec neuf titres de champion de France et de coupe d'Europe, vont-ils être éliminés ou créer la surprise ? Les transgenres considérés comme des «malades mentaux» au Pérou

Dans un décret publié vendredi 10 mai, le ministère péruvien de la Santé qualifie désormais les personnes «transgenres» comme ayant des «troubles mentaux».

Robert Garcia, mercredi 15 mai, n’a pas caché sa colère. Premier élu d’origine latino ouvertement gay à siéger au Congrès, à Washington , l’Américo-péruvien a dénoncé le nouveau décret publié dans son pays d’origine «visant à cibler et à étiqueter les Péruviens transgenres et non binaires comme "malades mentaux"» qu’il juge «discriminatoire, dangereux et honteux».

Le ministère péruvien de la Santé a publié ce décret  vendredi dernier, pour mettre à jour le Plan essentiel d'Assurance maladie (PEAS), un document qui détaille la liste des maladies et des interventions qui peuvent être assurées. Les actes médicaux, les médicaments, les opérations hospitalières... tout y est indiqué.

De nouveaux diagnostics

Ce plan suit la recommandation de l'OMS sur la Classification internationale des maladies (CIM-10), en vigueur depuis 30 ans, remplacée en 2022 par la CIM-11. Concrètement, la CIM est un système qui permet d'identifier chaque pathologie et sert de base pour organiser les systèmes de santé de chaque pays.

En 2018, lors de l’annonce du contenu de la CIM-11, l’absence de la transsexualité dans la catégorie des maladies mentales avait provoqué de vives polémiques en divers pays du monde. L’ homosexualité et la bisexualité , elles, avaient été retirées de la CIM-10 en 1992 et n’étaient plus considérées comme des pathologies.

Mais le gouvernement de la présidente péruvienne Dina Boluarte , se refuse à changer de classification. Il est resté basé sur la CIM-10. Ce nouveau décret va même plus loin, avec «l’ajout de sept diagnostics CIM-10» , absents jusque-là, dans la section consacrée aux personnes souffrant de problèmes de santé mentale qui pourraient bénéficier «d’interventions et de prestations assurables». On y retrouve notamment la transsexualité, le travestissement, et le trouble de l'identité de genre.

«De la torture pour le droit international»

Ce changement est évidemment très critiqué par pour les associations et organisations LGBT+ péruviennes. Le Collectif de la Marche des Fiertés a d’ores et déjà demandé au ministère de la Santé de revenir sur ce changement, «en se basant sur les indications de l’OMS qui recommande l'utilisation de la CIM-11» . Le décret «laisse plutôt la porte ouverte aux thérapies de conversion, ainsi qu'à l'utilisation d'hormones dans le but de "corriger l'homosexualité", des thérapies qui sont considérées comme de la torture par le droit international» , a déclaré Jorge Apolaya, porte-parole du Collectif de la Marche des Fiertés de Lima, au quotidien El Comercio .

Face à la polémique, le ministère de la Santé a précisé cette semaine que «le genre et la diversité sexuelle» n’étaient pas «des maladies ou des troubles» , mais a expliqué qu'il avait mis à jour le PEAS «pour garantir que la couverture des soins soit complète en matière de santé mentale». «La mise en œuvre progressive de la CIM-11 commence, comme c'est le cas dans d'autres pays», a également précisé le ministère, qui ajoute que « l'orientation sexuelle et l'identité de genre d'une personne » ne devraient pas « faire l'objet de thérapies de conversion ».
