Singles & eps, about miss june.

The churning, feminist-themed indie punk of New Zealand's Miss June draws on '90s grunge, noise pop, and a snotty post-punk in the tradition of Romeo Void, repurposed for the social-media generation. After releasing the punk-minded Matriarchy EP in 2015, they returned with a more melodic blend of punk and noise pop on their full-length debut, 2019's Bad Luck Party. Lead singer/guitarist Annabel Liddell, guitarist Jun Cheul "James" Park, bassist Chris Marshall, and drummer Tom Leggett formed Miss June in Auckland, sharing the demo "Pixielated (So Curious)" in early 2014. They returned with a more urgent sound on the next year's Matriarchy EP, following it with a split single with Dunedin's Astro Children in 2016. In 2018, the song "Twitch" opted for more-melodic vocals that resurfaced on their first album, Bad Luck Party. It arrived on Frenchkiss Records in 2019. ~ Marcy Donelson

After a lengthy hiatus of almost three years, Tāmaki Makaurau punk rock outfit Miss June making their return.

Boasting a formidable punk sound and ethos, the band seemed impressed in the latter of the last decade; fearsome songs like “Anxiety on Repeat”, “Matriarchy”, and “Best Girl” recalled powerful Australian contemporaries like Amyl and the Sniffers and WAAX, and soon Miss June were garnering international favour with support slots for the likes of the Foo Fighters and Wolf Alice .

Following the release of their debut album in 2019, the stellar Bad Luck Party , though, things went quiet. The four-piece – Annabel Liddell, James Park, Tom Leggett, and Chris Marshall – earned nominations for the 2020 Taite Music Prize and Tūī Award for Te Roopu Toa | Best Group at the same year’s Aotearoa Music Awards, but then took time off to focus on other endeavours.

After teasing something to come on Instagram over the past week, Miss June have now officially announced their return with two national shows: they’ll perform at Auckland’s Whammy Bar on Friday, March 3rd, followed by Wellington’s San Fran on Thursday, March 9th.

It’s unclear if Miss June plan to release a follow-up to Bad Luck Party this year, but they’ll be busy on the touring front at least. The band are supporting My Chemical Romance next month at the emo legends’ first New Zealand show in well over a decade.

Miss June 1324

Miss June’s Annabel Liddell on the Kiwi DIY ethics and sense of family that drives her band

For any aspiring artists finding their feet in New Zealand, there is a unique set of demands that have to be acknowledged in order to become a success.

Most crucially perhaps, it requires a certain initiative and degree of ‘Kiwi ingenuity’ specific to the small island nation. Remote and sparsely populated, the need to get more creative and adopt a DIY ethos has proven its worth over the years in New Zealand’s ability to churn out a consistent stream of high-calibre artists. Acts ranging from Aldous Harding to Crowded House and The Chills have successfully traversed the large expanse of sea between New Zealand and most other English-speaking countries, indicative of the curiosity and sense of adventure often associated with the nation. It is against such a backdrop that the latest lauded Kiwi act, Miss June, cut their teeth.

Calling ‘home’ Auckland, New Zealand’s most populous city at 1.4 million people, it is in the last 12 months that Miss June has really acquainted themselves with the international music scene. As well as engaging in a two-month international tour from the end of September to mid-November, which saw them visit Europe, the UK, Canada, and the US, the band also signed to New York-based label Frenchkiss Records (Bloc Party, Diet Cig), released their debut album Bad Luck Party , and won plaudits from the BBC’s Jack Saunders to the New York Times. As if that isn’t enough, the band, which alongside vocalist Annabell Liddell includes Jun Park on guitar, Chris Marshall on bass and Tom Leggett on drums, are ending the year with the announcement that they’re going to be supporting My Chemical Romance’s 2020 comeback gig in Auckland alongside eminent emo heroes Jimmy Eat World. An announcement that Liddell says, upon being asked to play, she “cried and screamed and said “yes!”. A fitting response not just to that request, but to the last year in general.

Despite the whirlwind of events that have characterised 2019 for the band, the journey to get to this point, however, has been somewhat more protracted. Forming in 2015 for what was only intended to be a single show, Miss June released their debut EP, Matriarchy , the same year to local acclaim. Unrefined and intelligent post-punk, it quickly started turning heads in New Zealand’s music scene and, compounded by the band’s incendiary live show, marked them as an act to watch. Multiple singles have since paved the way, and by the time their debut was released, a decent portion of its songs were already fairly well known among Miss June fans. Although Bad Luck Party wasn’t available in its entirety until September of this year, for anyone that had seen the band live, there would have been plenty of familiar favourites among the tracklist.

On the gestation period of Bad Luck Party , Liddell explains how: “The record was a process, two years of songwriting and one of recording. We never started out as a band trying to sound like anything specific. For us, it was always what felt creatively authentic, and all of us are different in that regard”.

“A few of the songs on the setlist had been there for a while, like “Twitch”, she continues. “I wrote that song three years ago, and we’d really road tested most of the album before recording it, as you do with a first album. You know, they say you have your whole life to write your first album, so a lot of songs off the album had kind of been road-tested. But I think the difference was really just the fact that we were playing these songs that we’d released as singles and not really registering that they’d been overseas. Having a crowd sing your lyrics back to you is really cool, and the thing with releasing an album is that people listen to it and really get to know the songs, so it sometimes feels a lot more fun to play”.

"We never started out as a band trying to sound like anything specific. For us, it was always what felt creatively authentic." - Annabel Liddell

A highlight Liddell pulls from their recent tour as proof of this growing interest in Miss June abroad was of a fan they met in Glasgow, Scotland. Described by Liddell as the “Scottish version of (Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist) Flea”, she explains how, after seeing them in Glasgow: “He caught the train the next day to Edinburgh to see our show and comments on every single Facebook post we make. It’s just sweet, that’s the sort of stuff I love”. While not discounting the value of the band’s fans back home (“Because New Zealand is such a small place it’s easier to gain a loyal following. We’ve definitely got fans that have been with us from the start and that’s been lovely”), the increase in international fandom is clearly, and deservedly, a point of pride.

Recorded in Auckland with producer Tom Healy, who also plays guitar in Tiny Ruins and is described by Liddell as a “fifth band member” (“We just kind of hit it off with him. And when I say hit it off, I mean really hit it off. When we finished the last session of recording I was devastated”), Bad Luck Party is a rousing collection of post-punk and indie tunes, paying homage to influences ranging from contemporary acts like Priests and Gauche to Kiwi heroes such as Bailter Space and The 3Ds. Led by tracks including the excellent “Twitch” and the anthemic “Enemies”, it exists as a culmination of the band’s efforts to date, and a reference point for other peers to try and aspire to. Liddell’s lyrics are a particular standout, her direct and unfiltered style the result of an in-the-moment writing process.

miss june tour

“I write a lot of lyrics daily on the go on my phone. I also use the voice recorder thing on my phone and voice record a lot of memos. Usually when I play, if I’m having writer’s block, I’ll go and scroll through my notes and see what jumps out. I’m very much a write-on-the-fly sort of person. I’ve never sat down and written out the lyrics to a song and thought about my word choices or anything like that. I just sing whatever comes to me and whatever vibe or mood I’m feeling and let it develop on its own the more I play it and the more the band plays it. Right up in the recording process even up to the last vocal takes of our songs I was toying with lyrics”.

Another key feature of the album is its profound live aesthetic. Raw and emphatic, it’s a direct reflection of the band’s actual live shows, which is itself a spectacle sharing much with modern punk bands such as Big Ups. At times it appears as if a show of endurance, each band member seemingly testing themselves to see how far they can push themselves from track to track. Forged out of playing live with regularity around Auckland and New Zealand, Liddell acknowledges the centrality of these experiences for the band: “We are a live band at heart, and that plays into having those gigs readily available. When we started we would play anywhere for anyone, we just wanted to play”.

We are a live band at heart. When we started we would play anywhere for anyone, we just wanted to play”. - Annabell Liddell

“Unfortunately what we’ve seen recently is the mass closure of music venues. I think everywhere around the world is seeing that”, Liddell continues, alluding to the increasingly dire reports on the state of live music. She qualifies however how, even today, “in Auckland there are heaps of shows going on all the time”.

When discussing the band’s upward trajectory, it becomes increasingly clear how essential their grounding in DIY has been for their overall ethos and approach to music. Even after signing to a major label and benefitting from some of the support that can provide, Liddell explains how it “still feels very DIY”. “We don’t have roadies and we don’t have a driver so we did all the driving and loading when we were on tour”.

“I feel like New Zealand is very different from a lot of other countries”, she adds. “Most bands here are DIY, we don’t necessarily have the presence of major labels. We have Universal and Sony, but most guitar bands here are DIY. I think that’s pretty rooted in anyone making music in New Zealand from a young age. Jun was really anti labels from the start, he was really into Chance the Rapper releasing stuff all on his own. But we had to move with the times to do what we wanted to achieve, and getting a label and a team on board was becoming more and more of an option that might be good for us. It still feels pretty DIY though. We are pretty self-sufficient. We toured a long time around Australia and New Zealand before this tour so we kinda know how touring works. Same with recording, we recorded with some of our best friends. The thing is with DIY, it is do it yourself, but it’s also do it with your friends and do it with people you trust and that you’ve known for a long time, and that’s definitely something we live by”.

miss june tour

This mantra can be seen in action with the recording process, in particular, the inclusion of the aforementioned Healy. Essential to not just the sound of the record but also to the dynamics of the band during those sessions, Liddell talks about the time spent recording with great fondness. “That’s the attitude we took to those small room sessions, like let’s have some fun and see what kind of sounds we can make”.

The choice of designer for the visual elements of the record also reflects this idea of operating within a tight, local community. Designed by Erin Forsyth, a New Zealand-based artist, the cover art depicts a scene of native fauna and flora, most of which are now extinct, in a slightly macabre, comic book-esque style. While stating most of their music isn’t political, Liddell makes explicit the message behind the album art. “We really wanted to touch on a lot of themes of climate change, an incredibly pertinent issue for our generation and all generations, and so there’s a lot of themes of that throughout the cover”.

Listening to Liddell talk about the community and DIY ethos of the band is hardly surprising, again given how closely associated these characteristics are to the stereotype of New Zeland culture. However, it’s important to be wary of continually resorting to this as the single founding of the band's characteristics, and it’s certainly a disservice to Miss June to associate their ethic purely as a systemic one. Although perhaps influenced by the initiative inherent in Kiwi culture, there is an internal work ethic that has enabled them to survive and push themselves as an act. Nowhere is this typified more than in Liddell’s juggling of studying for a medicine degree alongside band duties.

A notable reason behind the extended period of time between the release of Matriarchy and Bad Luck Party , Liddell’s experiences studying for her degree are notable in some of the band’s output, most clearly in the song “Twitch”, in which she describes her first time operating on a live body. The intensity of undertaking such studying alongside the band, however, did require an otherworldly work ethic and commitment that is highly commendable and prepared Liddell well for future projects. “Working and writing is something I’ve previously been able to do. I was working when we were doing album number one, so I’m not afraid of that”.

"The thing is with DIY, it is 'do it yourself', but it’s also 'do it with your friends' and 'do it with people you trust and that you’ve known for a long time' and that’s definitely something we live by”. - Annabell Liddell

Although the balancing act has proven fruitful to date, Liddell is aware that some stage, something may have to give. With issues such as being able to schedule in tours around shifts a potential sticking point, she’s quite frank about the possibility of the two not being able to sustainably coexist beside one another forever. “This is something I’m figuring out. I definitely want to work as a doctor, the only difficulty is scheduling. Medicine isn’t a degree where you can be like “I want this day off”. You request leave months and months in advance”.

While it’s easy to fixate on the story behind her dual ambitions, Liddell is, without doubt, a team player, and is quick to heap praise on her bandmates throughout our conversation. From stories on the road (“My highlight is when Jun ate some spicy chicken at this restaurant in Louisiana. Everyone at the counters was like “you sure about that?” and he was like “yeah, yeah” and he was crying and he vomited outside of the restaurant. It was hilarious”) to highlighting their undeniable musical abilities (“Tom is one of the greatest drummers in New Zealand now, he’s in a fantastic other band called Wax Chattels, and it’s been so beautiful to his transition as an artist”), it’s hard not to draw parallels between the tight, DIY music community surrounding them in Auckland and the internal dynamics of the band itself. Even under the pressure of their first extended international tour, the overall impression is of a close-knit, familial vibe.

“The dynamics of our band from the start have been ever-evolving. Because we’ve been a band for so long we went into it kinda family vibes. We have arguments and scraps and things but you can’t hold anything against anyone”. Liddell adds: “Be up-front and work through any problem as a team. I love the boys and they’re literally my family. It’s just like travelling with my family”.

miss june tour

Particularly striking about this dynamic is the randomness of their forming. Recalling the band's formation, Liddell says: “I played in this band called Girlfriends, and then my two other bandmates went to South East Asia without me. I didn’t go because I was studying at the time, and they said: “oh you just do the gigs, you’ll be fine”. I had never sung, I only played guitar in that band but I wrote all the music, so I knew all the songs but I kinda knew that I might have actually wanted to do something a bit different. I had a week or two before the first gig and I was like “shit, I’m going to need to get people who can learn this super quick”. So I went to jazz school and got three musicians. I was like “who’s the best drummer in the class?”, and got Tom, Chris, and Jun, and we’re still the same four-piece, which is crazy”.

I suggest that perhaps her bandmates’ studying and focussing on music helped ensure the band was all pulling in the same direction, though Liddell is quick to point out that a lot of people who studied music in that class went on to do other careers. The unlikelihood of their situation isn’t totally lost on her, and she’s ready to accept that things could well have turned out very differently.

“I truly believe in serendipity. The fact that we are still the same four people that had gotten together on such a whim. A week before a show I met them and was like, “learn these songs”. And now we’re like fully collaborating on music and touring. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me and it was such a fluke to find them. But it works, and I like to think I’ve got a good eye for people”. Considering the tightness of the group, she adds confidently: “I don’t feel like much could break us”.

“Because we’ve been a band for so long we went into it kinda family vibes. I don’t feel like much could break us”. - Annabell Liddell

Back home now, with a handful of shows in Australia and New Zealand lined up over the Christmas period, Liddell is clear on what the band has got lined up until around March. It’s after that point that things are currently a little hazy. Work on album number two has begun, with a lot of the lyrical content and a few melodies written on the road, though as Liddell explained, there is a lot resting on her next steps in regards to becoming a doctor. With things winding down in the meantime however and now seeming like a viable point of reflection, I ask how Miss June has shaped up against where she foresaw the band being at this point in time. “It’s definitely exceeded my expectations”, she responds quickly, leaving no doubt as to how she feels about Miss June’s career to date. “In saying that, I always hope for the best and want the best. I feel really happy, it’s really exceeded my expectations”.

Alongside the recent slew of Kiwi acts making waves internationally, such as Soaked Oats and The Beths, Miss June has managed to surpass such expectations while retaining the culture of DIY and community of home. Again, this isn’t lost on Liddell. Her love for where she’s come from and the culture as she experienced it is evident throughout our conversation, potentially emphasised somewhat by her pleasure at returning in time for New Zealand’s exceptionally beautiful summer (“We’re very fortunate to come back to this country”).

For this reason that it is perhaps her pocket-sized description of Miss June as “just little Kiwi kids driving around in a van playing music” that resonates the most. Humble and understated with more than a whiff of independence, it mirrors the environment the band grew up in, and leaves you in no doubt as to where they call home.

Meet Miss June, the New Zealand band quickly becoming globally adored

They'll be sharing their long-awaited debut album on september 6 via frenchkiss records..

While you may not be familiar with New Zealand-based rock outfit Miss June, they probably count one of your favourite rock acts a fan. Since their five-track, 2015-released debut EP  Matriarchy , the Annabel Liddell-led four-piece have blossomed into favourites amongst the greater rock world, supporting everyone from the Foo Fighters to Wolf Alice; their music, strangely enough, the perfect accompanying support to both of these vastly different acts. On their work since, for example, their music has swerved between blistering rock and hazy post-punk, highlighting Annabel's soaring vocal which is skillful enough to navigate whatever instrumental it's working with - a feat that often, heavier bands find themselves tripping up on.

Their new single,  Anomaly , is an ode to the beauty of flaws mixed within a quicker pace that makes it one of their more up-tempo pieces of work, with Annabel's vocal - once again - stealing the spotlight to be the single's big attraction. "I have an incredible ability to attract individuals that are as flawed as I am. It’s made my life chaotic and beautiful," she says on the track. "This song is about a girl. A girl I will never understand. A girl that’s a gun, a burning sun and an anomaly to me." Arriving following a two-side  Best Girl / Twitch  and it's follow-up,  Enemies ,  Anomaly  is a track that makes their forthcoming debut album,  Bad Luck Party , one of rock's most anticipated and excitable, sure to sun and win us over with its release on September 6 via Frenchkiss Records.

Dive into  Anomaly  below, pre-order their debut album Bad Luck Party  HERE , and catch them supporting Dune Rats on the east-coast next month, as well as a special one-off headline show at Sydney's The Vanguard on September 11th.

Tell us about yourself?

We are Miss June from Auckland New Zealand and we play music that is loud and fast. We are a quartet made up of Annabel Liddell (Vox, guitar), Jun Park (Guitar), Tom Leggett (Drums) and Chris Marshall (Bass).

What’s the vibe music-wise?

Describing your own sound is always hard I find. I guess we are a punk rock band and we just play music with lots of energy. Naturally, we like to write songs about subjects that are relevant to our lives and songwriting has always been such a good way to outlet your emotions and thoughts. There’s never a specific one theme or message that we write to.

What are your production and writing processes like?

When we write Annabel will usually bring a skeleton of a song that the band will fill up. Or we will all sit there and someone will come up with an idea that we all latch on to and explore it further until we come out with a product or section that we are happy with. To be honest it’s just a lot of bouncing ideas and almost like puzzle solving where we try to figure out the best way to piece together a song.

When producing, we will go into the studio and do a live drums session first. This is the best way to capture the energy of the drums which become the base layer of the songs. Then once all the drums are done we will slowly record the other instruments until we get a finished song that we are satisfied with. Pretty standard I think haha

Can you tell us about your latest single, Anomaly?

I have an incredible ability to attract individuals that are as flawed as I am. It’s made my life chaotic and beautiful. This song is about a girl. A girl I will never understand. A girl that’s a gun, a burning sun and an anomaly to me.

Any tour dates coming up?

Yep we got a bunch of tour dates coming up September-November!! We will be travelling all around the world so come check us out at a venue near you! So to be in the know of when we are coming go to OUR WEBSITE or you can give us a like on our social handles. @Ihatemissjune on Instagram and Twitter .

What does 2019 have in store for you?

The release of our debut album Bad Luck Party coming out in early September along with a world tour to support it. We can’t wait to show the world what we have been working on. I’m so glad to say that We are very proud of this album.

Where can we find more of your music?

Just in all the usual suspects, Spotify, Apple Music, Google Music, YouTube, etc.

Alternative music or sometimes referred to as alt-rock or simply alternative emerged from the independent music underground in the 1970s and became very popular in the 1980s. The breakthrough of Nirvana in the 1990s brought alternative rock to the mainstream in music. Throughout history, alternative rock has been defined by its rejection of the commercialism of pop culture. However, ironically alt-rock has become so popular that concert ticket sales have exploded and in many cases surpassed many pop-rock artists. 2024 Champions League final: All you need to know

Friday, May 10, 2024

Article summary

The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final will take place at London's historic Wembley Stadium.

Article top media content

Wembley Stadium in London will host the 2024 Champions League final on Saturday 1 June

Article body

The best of the best will be crowned on the ultimate stage when the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League season concludes at London's prestigious Wembley Stadium on Saturday 1 June.

This is the 69th season of Europe's elite club competition and the 32nd since it was renamed the UEFA Champions League.

Who is playing in the Champions League final?

Borussia Dortmund were first to confirm their place in the final with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Paris Saint-Germain . They will take on 14-time champions Real Madrid, who secured their own ticket to London with a dramatic 4-3 aggregate victory over Bayern München .

Where is the Champions League final?

The highlight of European football's club calendar returns to the London venue for a record eighth time, and the third in the UEFA Champions League era following the 2011 and 2013 finals.

Wembley has undergone a massive transformation since it hosted the last old-style European Champion Clubs' Cup final in 1992 , the famous twin towers arena making way for a new venue symbolised by the gigantic arch. Boasting a seated capacity of around 90,000, the new Wembley reopened its doors in 2007 and is once again home to the England national side, as well as host to the nation's premier domestic cup finals.

Wembley Stadium also hosted all three of England's Group D games at UEFA EURO 2020 , as well as two round of 16 matches, both semi-finals and the final itself , with the hosts only denied their maiden triumph in the competition on penalties against Italy. The outcome was more successful for England at UEFA Women's EURO 2022, as the Lionesses overcame Germany 2-1 after extra time to become European champions for the first time.

How to watch the Champions League final

Details of where to watch the Champions League final will appear here.

Is there extra time and penalties in the Champions League final?

Yes. If the score is level at the end of normal time, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played. If one of the teams scores more goals than the other during extra time, that team is declared the winner. If the score remains level after extra time, the winner is determined by a penalty shoot-out.

Who is the referee for the Champions League final?

The refereeing team will be announced in the lead-up to the final.

What do the Champions League winners get?

The UEFA Champions League trophy stands 73.5cm tall and weighs 7.5kg. "It may not be an artistic masterpiece, but everybody in football is keen to get their hands on it," said creator Jürg Stadelmann.

The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League winners will also automatically qualify for next season's league phase if they do not earn a place via their domestic league position.

Champions League winner rebalancing

What happens if the UEFA Champions League winners have also qualified for the league phase via their domestic league position?

What happens if the UEFA Champions League winners have also qualified for the league phase via their domestic league position?

Lastly, the European champions also earn the right to play against the winners of the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League in the 2024 UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw, Poland .

Who's performing at the Friday Night Show?

Rudimental will headline the first Friday Night Show in five years on 31 May to kick off UEFA Champions League final weekend in London .

Staged in in collaboration with Rockstar Energy Drink®, the Friday Night Show will take place at an iconic central London location, with Rudimental the main attraction on what promises to be an unforgettable music experience ahead of the biggest event in world club football.

Where are the other 2024 club competition finals?

2024 Europa League final : Dublin Arena, Dublin, Republic of Ireland 2024 Women's Champions League final : San Mamés Stadium, Bilbao, Spain 2024 Europa Conference League final : AEK Arena, Athens, Greece

June Ambrose is an architect of culture-shifting looks. Any hip-hop artist that came up during the ‘90s likely has a music video with Ambrose’s touch, from Missy Elliott’s inflatable suit for 1997’s “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” to the futuristic silver armor Busta Rhymes dons in 1999’s “What’s It Gonna Be?!”

In tandem with her role as JAY-Z’s personal stylist — a title she’s held since 1994 — Ambrose was instrumental in curating the fashion tastes of hip-hop’s golden era and pushed forward the concept of creating elaborate costumes for music videos.

England's kris kim, 16, set to make pga tour debut, following in footsteps of his lpga mom, share this article.

    miss june tour

High-level golf runs in the family for 16-year-old Kris Kim, who will make his PGA Tour debut this week at the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. Kim’s mother, Ji-Hyun Suh, played on the LPGA in 1998 and 1999, at the same time superstar Se Ri Pak burst onto the global stage.

Kim, who hails from Surrey, England, brings quite the resume to Texas. His 2023 triumphs include the R&A Boys’ Amateur Championship, European Boys Individual Championship and the McGregor Trophy.

He also went undefeated at the Junior Ryder Cup, defeating another up-and-coming star, Miles Russell, 5 and 4, in singles. The 15-year-old Russell, of course, tied for 20th recently on the Korn Ferry Tour .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by England Golf (@england.golf)

“I can’t wait to play in front of big crowds again. I’ve never hit the ball as far as I did at the Ryder Cup,” Kim said in a release. “The adrenaline rush makes golf so much fun. That said, having played that course, and a few more Tour courses, I appreciate the task ahead and look forward to the challenge.”

Kim, who is playing in McKinney on a sponsor exemption, became the first amateur sponsored by CJ Group last May. Managed by Trinifold Sports, Kim also became the first European amateur to sign an NIL deal with Under Armour and the first British amateur to sign with TaylorMade.

Suh, who briefly returned to competition in Europe in 2014 after a 12-year break, told tour officials that she took up golf at age 13 in Seoul after her father forced her to quit tennis.

“My father would take me at five in the morning and I would hit balls all day and my hands would hurt,” she said. “I didn’t like it very much, but my father did. So I continued practicing from the age of 13 and I became very good. Then, I joined the Korean National team, turned professional in 1998 and afterwards I decided to try and play in America.”

Suh recorded two T-15 finishes in 1998 on the LPGA at the Friendly’s Classic and Giant Eagle LPGA Classic.

Her stint in America fell short, she said, because her English wasn’t very good and it was difficult to travel on her own. With no sponsors in the U.S., she ultimately left for the Japan LPGA, where she played for one year until she met her husband and stopped altogether.

That was in 2002. The couple moved to Surrey and Suh took up a teaching career at a local golf course.

While Suh’s path into the game was laid out by her father, Cuddington Golf Club director Paul Schunter told BBC Sport that Kim’s passionate pursuit is self-motivated.

“I’ve never known a more dedicated youngster,” said Schunter, who watched Kim’s game develop as a youngster at Cuddington.

“And he could not have asked for better parents. They have been so encouraging. All the pushing has come from Kris because he has always wanted to play and practice more and more.”

Kim doesn’t have to look far to learn more about how to handle the next step of his career.

“I’ll definitely ask my mum for advice,” he said. “It is going to be a very different environment and you don’t know how you will respond to it. She’ll help me deal with it. She’s my coach and we talk about everything from dealing with nerves, taking one shot at a time, leaving bad shots behind and keeping it simple right through to course strategy.

“My first aim is to make the cut and then see what happens. At the end of the day I’m one of 144 competitors and we’ve all got a chance. Whatever happens, it’s going to be super helpful for my future because I’ll gain so much experience. I know I’m still young and pretty much every week I learn a lesson, but this week is going to be a lot bigger.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — At a 24,000-square-foot studio near downtown Los Angeles, Missy Elliott , Busta Rhymes and Ciara are preparing to film the video announcement for a tour no one saw coming.

This summer, the trio — along with legendary producer Timbaland — will hit the road for Elliott’s first headlining arena tour, appropriately titled “Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience.”

“Listen, I didn’t realize I never had my own tour,” says a smiling Elliott, holding her tiny Yorkie, named Fendi, dressed in Gucci. “The last real tour that I went on — like, consistent days — was with Beyoncé and Alicia (Keys).”

    That was in 2004.

Call it long overdue, but the timing is ideal. Over the last few years, Elliott — the forward-seeking artist — has been recognized for her talents as a musician, producer, songwriter and beyond .

In 2019, she became the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2021, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, named a boulevard after her. Last year, she became the first female hip-hop artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Getting those accolades, I feel like I’ve finally made it,” Elliott says. “It feels amazing. I feel so blessed.”

“What we’re seeing now is kind of the rest of the world catching up,” says Mona Scott-Young, Elliott’s longtime manager and co-producer of the tour. “She’s always been ahead.”

In his green room, Busta Rhymes tells the AP that a tour had never come up in conversation across his decades of friendship and collaboration with Elliott. (He’s the intro and outro voice on her canonical debut album, 1997’s “Supa Dupa Fly.” They’ve long since been inseparable.)

“She doesn’t really tour and she doesn’t perform often. I just kind of understood my sister — the unspoken thing,” he says. “You knew that if she decided to do this, go to the place where she was actually ready to tour, the s--- was going to be crazy because one thing Missy never did was play with her production. And you saw that in everything she did, from her shows to her videos.”

He continued: “Missy will turn down $10 million to do a show. … She’s super in control of her destiny in that way, and without compromise, is what made her super incredibly great. You can’t do nothing but love her for that. She’s a true artist in the purest form of the word.”

And make no mistake, this isn’t a nostalgia tour.

“We are in the best spaces in our lives, individually and collectively, we’re at the most experienced spaces in our lives,” Rhymes says. “We’re no longer Daniel-san. We’re now all Mr. Miyagi senseis. You know what I’m saying? We’re all at our perfection levels of what we’ve been doing and building together as a collective family for 30 years.”

    Elliott echoed the sentiment.

“The lineup feels something special,” says Elliott. “It’s family. It’s not put together.”

On set, the trio are styled by longtime collaborator June Ambrose — all-black looks, like if the Avengers were impeccably dressed and made up of R&B and hip-hop legends. They take photos as a group and individually.

After her solo photo shoot, Ciara starts to tear up.

“When I was a little girl, a little artist coming up, and you would ask me, ‘Who inspires you?’ I would infuse a combination of people: Michael Jackson and Prince and I would say Missy Elliott. She’s one of the best performers of all time,” she said.

“She means a lot to me as an artist but also as a person, as a sister. She’s always someone I can call for the truth, and she’s got to keep it real with me. She’s someone I can call and cry to if I need to.”

But ask her if there will be any on-stage collaborations — Elliott wrote and was featured on Ciara’s huge hit “1, 2 Step”; Ciara’s on Elliott’s “Lose Control” — she laughs. “Missy’s very particular. I don’t want to ruin any surprises,” she says. “I think from beginning to end, people will be on their feet. All of us have a lot of energetic records.”

    “Somebody’s gonna die!” Rhymes jokes.

“And come back to life,” Ciara cuts in.

“Let’s keep it positive,” Rhymes laughs. “Someone is gonna die and come back to life.”

Later, Elliott offers a hint at what fans can expect from the show. “It’s an experience, it’s not just you seeing the artist on the stage,” she says. “I want people to travel to those moments, those (music) videos , I want you to relive it on stage. It is most definitely a lot of good, good stuff. Expensive stuff!”

The “Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience” kicks off in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 4 at Rogers Arena and concludes in Rosemont, Illinois, at Allstate Arena on Aug. 22.

It will hit Seattle; Oakland, California; Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Denver; Austin, Texas; Houston; Fort Worth, Texas; Tampa, Florida; Sunrise, Florida; Atlanta; Baltimore; Hampton, Virginia; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Newark, New Jersey; Boston; Brooklyn, New York; Detroit; Montreal and Toronto.

The tour is produced by Young’s Monami Entertainment and Live Nation. Presale begins tomorrow , and tickets will become available to the general public on Friday.

Glasgow college runs a Taylor Swift masterclass for parents ahead of Eras tour

A college in Scotland ran a one-off course for loved ones and plus ones attending the sold-out Eras Tour to help brush up on their Taylor Swift knowledge.

Swift, who will kick off the European leg of her tour in Paris, France tonight will arrive in Scotland to perform at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium for three nights next month (7-9 June).

Tickets for the shows were in high demand with 2.9 million fans attempting to get their hands on the 215,000 available, and it is thought Swift will put on the biggest show in Scotland, smashing the 2023 record set by Harry Styles.

With a month to go, Glasgow Clyde College (GCC) launched the masterclass to educate loved ones and plus ones on all things Swift - from the set list, relationships, different eras, and her iconic looks from her career spanning almost two decades.

(After all, you wouldn't want to miss out on some of the iconic moments from the show).

Attendees were also prepped for the different crowd chants they could expect to hear such as "One, two, three, let's go b****!" during the song Delicate and "Taylor, you’ll be fine," during the hit Anti-Hero.

The sold-out workshop took place on May 7 from 6-7:30 pm in the Innovation Centre at Langside Campus.

Robert Anderson, curriculum assistant principal at GCC said : "Taylor mania doesn't seem to be slowing any time soon, and we expect it'll reach its peak here in Scotland in June.

"We understand that not everyone will be up to speed on all things Taylor and might not get the full Eras experience.

"That's why we created this masterclass - to prepare those who'll be heading along to the gig with their superfan kids, friends or partners to ensure they have just as memorable a time.

He added: "Taylor's gigs are known for being so well crafted, and unless you're a fan yourself, you might miss some of the iconic moments.

"Our expert will take you through everything you need to know - leaving you a Swiftie in no time."
