Information for visitors.

The University of Pittsburgh is proud to be an intellectual destination for visiting scientists, scholars, researchers, and employees from industry, government, nonprofit organizations, and other academic institutions. The University regularly welcomes domestic and international Visitors who wish to participate in research, educational, and other scholarly activities. As an Academic Visitor, you enrich our campus environment and provide unique skills and perspectives through your activities with both faculty members and students.

The sections below provide information on the Academic Visitor Hosting Process , the University of Pittsburgh , and the City of Pittsburgh that may be helpful to Visitors before and during their visits.

The Academic Visitor Hosting Process

The University of Pittsburgh's Hosting Visitor guidelines provide information to University hosts and administrators on the Academic Visitor process . The process includes the following five steps: determining the visit category, conducting research-security reviews, acquiring signed visitor-agreement documents, onboarding-related Visitor actions, and departure-related Visitor actions. Please consult these guidelines to become familiar with the procedures that University hosts must complete to bring you to campus.

The University is the official host for all Visitors, while University departments and schools are responsible for the day-to-day and administrative oversight of a Visitor. The initial term for any visit cannot exceed one year, but visits can be extended for a second year with the appropriate approvals. Academic Visitors cannot be employees of the University; nor can they conduct their visits virtually. Additional information on the Visitor process, including Visitor eligibility, is available on the Visitor Process Overview page.

The University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh has grown tremendously since its early days and is now an internationally recognized institution of higher learning. Founded as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787, the University is among a select group of universities and colleges established in the 18th century in the United States. It is the oldest continuously chartered institution of higher learning in the U.S. west of the Allegheny Mountains. Additional information on the University’s history is located at its 225th anniversary timeline and on the Documenting Pitt website.

The University’s main campus is located on a 132-acre site in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, and its four regional campuses are located in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville. Oakland is the academic and healthcare center of Pittsburgh, one of the city's major cultural centers, and is Pennsylvania's third largest “Downtown.” Only Center City Philadelphia and downtown Pittsburgh can claim more economic and social activity than Oakland.

The University is one of the top research universities in the United States. It regularly ranks in the top 10 overall in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s rankings of federally funded research at universities and colleges and among the top 10 overall recipients of National Institutes of Health research funding. It also is consistently recognized for its research and academic achievements by the U.S. News & World Report , Times Higher Education , and The Princeton Review , among other organizations and publications.

The City of Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is the second largest city in Pennsylvania, with a population of approximately 300,000, and is the county seat of Allegheny County. The city is known as “the Steel City” for its more than 300 steel-related businesses as well as “the City of Bridges” for its 446 bridges. For much of the 20th century, Pittsburgh was third to New York and Chicago in corporate headquarters employment, second to New York in bank assets, and first in the country with the most stockholders per capita. This heritage left the area with renowned museums, medical centers, parks, research centers, libraries, and a diverse cultural district.

America's 1980s deindustrialization devastated the city, when the longtime Pittsburgh-based world headquarters of Gulf Oil, Sunbeam, Rockwell, and Westinghouse moved elsewhere. The city has since reclaimed much of its former luster, and is now a center for education, health, and technological innovation. Additional information on the Pittsburgh region's history can be found on the University of Pittsburgh Library System's Historic Pittsburgh website and on the Visit Pittsburgh website. The Visit Pittsburgh website also is an excellent place to explore Southwestern Pennsylvania's cultural, recreational, culinary, shopping, and other offerings.

Summer 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to the latest Travel & Expense Management Newsletter!

Travel & Expense Management Lunch and Learn

Join the Purchase, Pay & Travel team via Zoom for a Travel and Expense Management Lunch and Learn on Wednesday June 12, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm featuring special guests: representatives from Southwest Airlines!

We will review important information and training topics related to the travel and expense management program. This session will start with hearing from our Southwest Airlines representatives as they share their latest news and updates along with some giveaways! The session will then cover frequently asked questions for payment processing, the Concur system, and travel topics, concluding with an interactive period for any questions.  Learn more and register here.

Travel Program Price Audit

The latest audit results are now ready: Results for January 2024 – March 2024    As a reminder, an independent third-party conducts an ongoing formal audit of prices available through Pitt’s Travel Program on a quarterly basis. This audit compares the price for airfare and car rental searches to the top destinations for Pitt travel, through the following booking platforms:

  • Concur online booking tool that works in conjunction with Anthony Travel , Pitt’s contracted Travel Management Company
  • Direct booking through the travel provider (i.e. airline or rental agency)
  • Consolidator sites (i.e. Expedia, Orbitz, etc.)

See all previous results and read more about the travel program price audit, including the full methodology behind the audit and results.

What to Expect When Traveling

A regular email series, What to Expect When Travelling, is intended to equip University travelers with the latest travel industry information and tips. Most recently, we have shared information about sustainable travel and travel payment methods. You can read more about the latest travel tips and all previous tips on the Purchase, Pay and Travel website .

Benefits of Airline Partners

When booking airfare through the Concur online booking tool or direct through an Anthony Travel agent, consider flying with our preferred airline partners including Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, for applicable University discounts. Under our agreements with the airlines, we receive discounts with their joint business venture airlines as well.

As an additional friendly reminder, for those who want to book an American Airline flight, you can work directly with an Anthony Travel agent via phone or email for booking assistance. The agents can access AA’s fares and your flight details will be available in your Concur profile.

Airline Status Matching

For those who have status with American Airlines but would like to travel with a University-preferred airline to receive the contract benefits offered to the University, you can transfer your status from American to United or Delta. This will allow you to still receive your status benefits while flying on a preferred airline. If you are interested in status matching, contact Emily Duchene , Travel Manager, for help.

Gender Inclusivity in Concur

Concur has updated the TSA section of the traveler profile to be more gender inclusive. The new update can be found under the TSA Secure Flight section of the Concur profile settings. Under Gender there is a drop down to now include Unspecified (X) and Undisclosed (U) along with the previously available fields of Male (M) and Female (F). Learn more including how to access the latest update.

Sales Tax Exemption Clarification

Over the past few months, we have worked to provide clarification on sales tax exemption. We received word that there was some confusion surrounding the topic so Stephanie Ford-Jones, Director of Payment Processing & Compliance (PPC); Liz Lanzy, Payment Processing Manager; and Emily Duchene, Travel Manager within Purchasing Services, have taken the lead on providing clarity and guidance on how the sales tax exemption process works and the benefit it provides to the university. Check out the latest communication for more information.

Using the Comment Section on Expense Reports

When creating your expense reports in Concur, the comments section can be your best friend to ensure your report moves smoothly through the approvals process. The comments section allows for you to “talk to” all approvers including your supervisor and the PPC team who are responsible for reviewing. By utilizing the comments field, you can provide clarification on items that may cause a delay in the approvals process if an unclear item needs to be explained, or even the report being returned if it seems information is missing. By proactively adding in any explanations, this can help the approvers in your department and in PPC understand all items on the report and make for an easier review process. Some examples of when using the comment section can be helpful:

  • If you are submitting airfare for multiple people, you can use the comment section to note the name of each traveler attached to the different receipts.
  • If special approval is needed for certain items, note the approval was received (and including the proper documentation).

Remember: you can never put too much information in the comments! The more information you provide, the easier the approval process will be.

Helpful Expense Report Reminders

To ensure your expense report is submitted and approved in the most efficient manner, we wanted to share some helpful reminders. Keep in mind, not adhering to the requirements can result in reports being delayed or returned to be amended.

  • Submit reports within a timely manner.
  • Avoid submitting an expense report with several months of expenses included on one singular report. You should submit reports monthly.
  • In accordance with university  Policy FN28 , you must attach an attendee list when required (i.e.: group business dinners).

pittsburgh university tours

Payments Method Reminders

The OneCard is the preferred payment method for all purchases related to booking or while in travel status. It is also used for the purchase of goods only when purchase through PantherExpress is not possible. Review the  Payment Method Comparison chart  for a full listing of purchases for which the OneCard is applicable. The OneCard should not be used for international orders, the only exception being for books and journals.

Payments to independent contractors for services should not be paid on a OneCard, which is a violation of university Policy FN20 that can affect your department and result in an audit. Services should be purchased through a contract or purchase order and processed through the PantherExpress System . For more information, review the helpful reminders below and visit the PPT website :

  • When paying foreign national visitors or independent contractors you must attach a W-8BEN for each payment request. The FNTO will not review without the W-8BEN.
  • Log into the DocuSign eSignature Service app that can be found in the My Pitt applications
  • Go to the Shared Folders drop down on the left-hand sidebar
  • Go into the PITT CFO folder and select the Supplier Verification Form (SVF)
  • To start the process of filling out the SVF, you need to click USE, not edit. The ‘Edit’ feature is password-protected for Payment Processing’s use only.

University of Washington Defensive Coordinator Stephen Belichick Lists Modern Farmhouse Near Boston for $4.2M

Stephen Belichick , who recently joined the football coaching staff at the University of Washington, is ready to sell his lovely modern mansion in Dover, MA .

About 15 miles southwest of Boston , the six-bedroom, 5.5-bath home offers over 8,200 square feet for $4,195,000. The elegant abode is flanked by two grassy lawns and plenty of mature plantings.

This custom-designed, modern farmhouse boasts rough-hewn beams overhead, black-lined windows, and a neutral color scheme. Fancy finishes and designer cabinets abound in the open-concept living area, kitchen, and dining space.

Other highlights include an office, a butler’s pantry, and a mudroom with nifty built-in lockers for every team player—ahem, family member—to stash boots, sports gear, hats, and jackets.

A main bedroom upstairs has its own seating area, a luxe bath, and two custom closets. There’s even an au pair suite on the top level.

On the bottom floor, a home gym with a half-bath awaits, along with a playroom and an adorable pretend grocery store for hours of make-believe fun. The property has lots of grass for outdoor games and plenty of room to put in a pool. An alarm system, generator, and sprinklers complete the package.

Football is a way of life for the Belichick family. Stephen’s father, Bill Belichick , was the longtime coach of the New England Patriots , winning six Super Bowl rings in his 24 seasons with the franchise.

Stephen followed a similar path, working in a number of coaching positions for his dad over the past several years. Earlier this year, he joined the University of Washington Huskies squad as defensive coordinator. He played college lacrosse for four years at Rutgers but switched to the football program in 2011.
