Qatar Airways offers three cabins of service: economy, business and first. Additionally, each class is divided into “fare families” to give you flexibility when it comes to your travel needs. The more expensive the fare, the more amenities that will be included in the purchase price.

You can make a booking under the following Qatar fare families:

The following are included in a first class elite fare ticket.

The Privilege Club, Qatar’s loyalty program, has four membership tiers: Burgundy, Silver, Gold and Platinum. You automatically become a Burgundy member once you join the program.

After you sign up and start crediting paid flights to the program, you’ll earn Avios, which you can redeem for Qatar Airways flights as well as flights operated by partners. For example, you can transfer these Avios to British Airways and redeem them through the Executive Club program.

How to earn Privilege Club status

To move up the elite status ladder, you need to earn Qpoints, which you can earn by flying Qatar Airways or any Oneworld member airline.

What's the difference between Qpoints and Avios? QPoints are how you earn elite status, and don't post until you've completed an eligible flight. Meanwhile, Avios can be earned by spending on credit cards, flying, transferring between partners or booking flights (more on this below).

You have a 12-month period to qualify for status — it doesn’t have to be a calendar year. Once you qualify for status, you have another year or two to requalify and keep your status.

Here’s how many Qpoints you need to reach or retain Privilege Club elite status.

The requirements to requalify for status are a bit easier than they are to reach an elite tier initially.

However, you need to earn at least 20% of the required Qpoints by flying on Qatar Airways. Furthermore, at least four flight segments within the last 12 months or at least eight flight segments within the last 24 months must be flown on flights marketed or operated by Qatar. This means you can’t earn Privilege Club status by flying solely with other Oneworld members.

If you collect Marriott Bonvoy points, you can transfer them to Privilege Club at a ratio of 3:1, with a bonus of 5,000 Avios for every 60,000 Marriott points transferred. This means that 60,000 Bonvoy points convert to 25,000 Qatar Airways Avios when transferred in one go.

It’s also possible to convert World of Hyatt points to Qatar Airways Avios. The points transfer at a rate of 2.5:1, with a bonus of 5,000 miles for every 50,000 World of Hyatt points converted, meaning you’ll end up with 25,000 Avios after transferring 50,000 Hyatt points.

Transfer Avios from Avios-earning partners

It’s possible to transfer Avios among all the loyalty programs that use Avios as their currency: Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Vueling Club and Qatar Privilege Club. The first step is to link your Privilege Club account to your British Airways Executive Club account.

Avios transfer at a ratio of 1:1 from either program and don’t have to be transferred in increments of 1,000. You could transfer as few as 1 Avios at a time if you wanted to.

At the moment, Qatar Avios can only be transferred to or from British Airways. If you need to move Iberia Plus Avios to Qatar, for example, you’d need to first transfer them to British Airways, then to Qatar.

To redeem Qatar Airways Avios, you must be logged in to your Privilege Club account. The mileage rates depend on the route you fly and the class of service.

When pricing out award flights, make sure to select a standard redemption rate and not a Flexi rate, which requires double the Avios for the same itinerary.

U.S. to Qatar in business class

Business class award flights between Doha and its U.S. destinations start at 70,000 Avios with minimal taxes. Considering these flights last between 12 and nearly 16 hours, it’s a great redemption rate. You might even get lucky and fly one of the aircraft equipped with Qsuites , Qatar’s fancy business class pod.

Economy-class redemption rates on these routes start at 35,000 miles.

U.S. to the Maldives in business class

If you’re dreaming of flying all the way to the Maldives, an archipelago nation in South Asia, and in business class to boot, then Qatar has a great option for you. A one-way flight from the U.S. to the Maldives in the premium cabin will set you back 85,000 Avios. Double that for a round-trip award.

U.S. to India in business class

Another great redemption option is for flights between the U.S. and India.

A one-way flight from the U.S. to Delhi in Qatar’s business class requires 80,000 Avios, which is an excellent redemption rate if you can find it.

Qatar Airways and its Privilege Club loyalty program offers a lot of value to points and miles enthusiasts and die-hard loyalists alike. The redemption rates for premium service are quite reasonable, and, because of its membership in the Oneworld alliance and a few transfer partners, Avios aren’t difficult to obtain.

However, the main reason Qatar Airways has become known as one of the world’s top carriers is thanks to its Qsuite business class product , one of the most aspirational products you can fly.

In this guide, we’ll look at which U.S. routes are flown by Qatar Airways’ various aircraft types and the planes and seats you should try to be booking.

Qatar Airways has one of the world’s youngest airline fleets, with an average aircraft age of approximately 5 years.

Qatar Airways uses a hub-and-spoke model, connecting passengers coming from “spokes” in its network through its central hub, Hamad International Airport (DOH ), located in Qatar’s capital city, Doha .

Currently, Qatar Airways uses 4 different types of planes on flights to the U.S.:

• Airbus A350-1000
• Airbus A350-900
• Boeing 777-300ER
• Boeing 777-200LR

There are plenty of ways to earn Avios for flights on Qatar Airways . Oneworld partners are eligible to book Qatar Airways flights so long as Qatar Airways releases award availability to these partners.

At a high level, we recommend using American Airlines AAdvantage , Japan Airlines Mileage Bank , Cathay Pacific Asia Miles , and British Airways Executive Club to book Qatar Airways flights. You can also use Qatar Airways’ frequent flyer program, Privilege Club , to book award travel.

The best loyalty program for you depends on the types of transferable points you have, the route you’re flying, and which cabin class you’re booking.

Qatar Airways first class is only offered on its Airbus A380 aircraft, of which the carrier only has 10.

The A380’s generally only flown to premier markets like London-Heathrow (LHR) and Paris (CDG), and they’re not deployed on any U.S. routes.

Qatar Airways Business Class Options

Qatar Airways uses 4 different types of planes on flights to the U.S.

In this section, we’ll walk you through the different aircraft, including our top choices, and we’ll break down each type’s seat map and give you our recommendations for the best seats.

Qatar has frequent and unannounced equipment swaps. This is less common for U.S. flights but is worth mentioning.

Our favorite iteration of Qatar’s Qsuite is found on the high-tech Airbus A350-1000 . Why? This newer aircraft is one of the most fuel-efficient planes and boasts superior construction.

The A350-1000 features the most expansive cabin body of any class, with vertical sidewalls and larger windows, creating an extra spacious feel. It also features the largest overhead bins of any aircraft, for maximum storage.

The cabin is constructed from carbon composites and other alloys that minimize noise and maximize humidity for a more comfortable flight.

Qatar’s Airbus A350-1000s feature Qsuites business class arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration across a larger forward cabin with a minicabin behind it. Each suite measures 21.5 inches wide and 80 inches long in bed mode.

The E and F seats are the famous double-bed suites — they’re also rear-facing, which is a unique novelty. We recommend these “honeymoon” seats to couples traveling together.

Odd-numbered A and K seats are the best for solo travelers thanks to the extra privacy you get from the aisle compared to B and J seats.

Families traveling together can reserve quad Qsuites at 1E/1F/2D/2G, 3E/3F/4D/4G. These seats feature movable panels that allow passengers to transform the space into a social area, allowing those traveling to dine together. They can also be turned back into more private, individual suites.

At the moment, Qatar Airways flies to the following U.S. cities with the A350-1000:

• Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Doha (DOH) on QR 730
• Houston (IAH) – Doha (DOH)
• Los Angeles (LAX) – Doha (DOH) on QR 740 and QR 742
• Miami (MIA) – Doha (DOH)

• Washington, D.C. (IAD) – Doha (DOH) on QR 708 and QR 710

Currently, all of Qatar’s Airbus A350-1000s feature Qsuites!

Qatar features 2 variations on their A350-900 aircraft. Both feature business class in a 1-2-1 configuration. However, one variation features Qsuites and the other doesn’t. Currently, only about one-third of Qatar’s A350-900s feature Qsuites. More on that below.

Qatar Airways’ A350-900 Qsuites are almost identical to those on the A350-1000. The main difference is that the -900 has a slightly shorter range and a smaller passenger capacity.

The Qsuite has the same specs: 21.5 inches wide and 80 inches long in bed mode. However, on the -900, there are 36 suites in total — 12 in the rear cabin and 24 in the forward cabin.

The double beds are found at the E and F seat pairs — which is what we recommend for couples traveling together. If you’re flying solo, you’re probably better off reserving an A or K window seat.

You’ll find the Qsuite-equipped A350-900 aircraft on the following routes to and from the U.S.:

• Boston (BOS) – Doha (DOH)

Our next choice is the Boeing 777-300ER . It offers a high seating capacity but may be less comfortable than the A350-1000 and A350-900, as it doesn’t have some of the high-tech features newer aircraft have.

Qatar currently operates 56 different 777-300ER variations — more than half of them featuring Qsuites.

Qsuites are slightly smaller on the 777-300ER, at 21 inches wide instead of 21.5 inches. The seat pitch and bed length are the same, though, at 80 inches each.

The configuration is also the same: a 1-2-1 layout with alternating forward- and rear-facing seats. The 42 Qsuites are spread across 2 cabins, with 24 suites in the front cabin and 18 in the rear cabin.

For those traveling by themselves, we recommend the A and K seats . We think the best seats are 10A and 10K because of their location in the minicabin away from the lavatories.

From a privacy perspective, 11E and 11F are the best double-bed Qsuites for those traveling together.

Qatar Airways’ 777-300ER is found on the following U.S. routes:

• Atlanta (ATL) – Doha (DOH)
• Chicago (ORD) – Doha (DOH) on QR 726
• New York (JFK) – Doha (DOH) on QR 702/704/706
• Seattle (SEA) – Doha (DOH)

The last Qsuite product we’ll discuss is on the Boeing 777-200LR, which is simply the long-range variant of the 777-200.

Qatar also features 2 different variations on the 777-200LR. Currently, 7 of the 9 Boeing 777-200LRs feature Qsuites. However, the other 2 feature business class seats in a 2-2-2 configuration. The 2-2-2 business class is a significant letdown compared to those 777-200LRs featuring Qsuites.

The Qsuites are the same as those found on the 777-300ER, coming in at 21 inches wide and 80 inches long in bed mode.

There are 42 Qsuites in total, with 18 in the rear minicabin and 24 in the forward cabin:

We always recommend picking minicabin seats if possible, and this is no exception. If booking the minicabin in the rear is possible, solo travelers should reserve the 10A or 10K window seats , while couples should book 11E/F or 9E/F .

The long-range 777-200LR is found on the following routes:

• Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Doha (DOH) on QR 732

The last aircraft we’ll discuss in the business class section is the non-Qsuite-equipped Airbus A350-900, the other variation of the A350-900 aircraft.

This is our least preferred option, as it’s the only aircraft flown to the U.S. without Qsuites installed.

This business class cabin consists of reverse-herringbone seats in a 1-2-1 configuration with direct aisle access and fully lie-flat seats.

Each of these 36 seats measures 22 inches wide and 80 inches long in bed mode. There are 24 seats in the forward cabin and 12 in the rear minicabin.

Here’s what the seat map looks like:

The most significant difference between Qsuites and these reverse-herringbone seats is that Qsuites have much more privacy and versatility. This more traditional reverse-herringbone product doesn’t have a tall seat shell, a sliding door, or the ability to create double beds or quad suites.

Since these seats are all more or less the same, our recommendation is to simply avoid seats near the lavatories and galleys , if possible.

Qatar Airways has quite a varied wide-body fleet, with business class configurations varying slightly. Qsuites business class is most often found on Qatar’s Airbus A350-1000s and its Boeing 777-200LRs.

Qatar Airways doesn’t offer any flights with premium economy to or from the U.S.

Qatar Airways Economy Class Options

Now it’s time to talk about coach class.

As you’ll find out, we have strong preferences for — and aversions to — specific seats and planes .

Of all the possible options, our favorite economy cabin on Qatar Airways is the Airbus A350-900 (non-Qsuite) .

Why? It’s simple: The seats are the widest, and a handful of preferential seats have extra legroom.

Each seat is 18 inches wide , which isn’t industry-leading, but it is the widest you’ll find on Qatar. Each of the 247 seats has 31 to 32 inches of legroom, and they’re arranged (mostly) in a 3-3-3 configuration.

The best seats are 17D, 17E, 17F, and Row 30 . All these seats have extra legroom, though Row 30 seats may be slightly worse due to their proximity to the lavatories and galleys.

If possible, you should avoid seats in rows 16, 43, and 44. Row 16 seats have restricted legroom, while rows 43 and 44 are at the back of the plane with limited recline and right next to the galleys and lavatories.

Next up is Qatar Airways’ A350-900 (with Qsuites) economy.

Again, there are 247 seats, but they are slightly narrower at around 17.5 inches wide. The seat pitch is the same, though, at 31 to 32 inches each, and the 3-3-3 configuration is the same, as shown below:

The best seats are at row 30 , thanks to the exit row affording extra legroom. Row 16 seats could be good for extra legroom, but the bulkhead might restrict the “stretchability” of extra-tall flyers.

Avoid rows 28, 29, 43, and 44 , because they’re close to the lavatories and can’t recline as much as the other seats.

The Boeing 777-200LR can fit 230 travelers in economy with a hybrid 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 configuration. The seats are narrower — 16.9 to 17.4 inches wide — though the pitch is unchanged at 31 to 32 inches.

Seats 17D/E/F, 19D, 27A/B/C/H/J/K, and 29D are the best picks, thanks to the extra legroom at each.

We recommend avoiding seats near the lavatories , including the red-colored ones illustrated above.

Qatar Airways’ 777-300ER economy cabin has a 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 seating arrangement, with each seat being 17 inches wide and offering 31 to 32 inches of pitch.

The enormous plane has a whopping 312 economy seats. However, there are quite a few seats we prefer, as outlined in the seat map below:

Rows 16 and 35 have excellent legroom, as does Row 23 (excluding A and K seats, which have to deal with the exit door protrusion).

Seats in rows 34 and 45 have limited recline , which is something to avoid for long-haul travel. They’re also close to the galleys and lavatories — yet another reason to avoid them.

The last product we’ll discuss is the A350-1000 economy cabin, which has 281 seats in a 3-3-3 layout.

Each seat is 16.9 to 17.4 inches wide and offers 31 to 32 inches of pitch.

The best seats for solo travelers are 31A or 31K , which don’t have seats in front of them.

Couples traveling together may wish to choose 30A/C, 30H/K, 16A/B, or 16H/K, as these have extra legroom and occupy their own little area. We  recommend avoiding rows 29, 47, and 48 . The impetus for this is that rows 29, 47, and 48 have restricted recline space and are right next to the galleys and lavatories.

Qatar Airways flies nonstop to plenty of U.S. airports, including all of the international gateways you’d expect, like Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), and New York (JFK).

Better yet, Qsuites is available on most routes and should be on more routes as Qatar continues to outfit its aircraft. Qatar occasionally has aircraft swaps, which can be disappointing if you want to fly Qsuites.

If you’re booking any Qsuite ticket, you’re in great shape. However, if we had to pick one aircraft to fly Qsuites, it’d be the Airbus A350-1000 . The cabin construction helps regulate the onboard climate, which can go a long way in terms of comfort and fighting jet lag.

Qatar features 2 different variations on their A350-900 aircraft. Both feature business class in a 1-2-1 configuration. However, one variation features Qsuites and the other has a layout with reverse-herringbone seats. We prefer the Qsuites product.

If you’re flying in coach, our favorite seats are on the A350-900s without Qsuites, thanks to their greater width compared to the other aircraft in Qatar’s fleet.

The ultimate guide to Qatar Qsuite

Qatar Airways has boasted some of the world's best business-class seats and service for the last decade. However, the airline raised the bar with the unveiling of its revolutionary Qsuite in March 2017. These were the first suite-style business-class seats, complete with closing doors and layouts that could be configured into four-person family or work areas and even double beds .

What was even more astonishing was the speed with which the airline rolled out the suites aboard its fleet. The first flight with them went into service in June 2017 , just three months after the unveiling.

Since then, Qatar Airways has put the Qsuite into service on many of its flagship routes, such as those between its hub at Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha, Qatar, and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), among other destinations. Here's why you'll want to experience the Qsuite and how you can book it using miles.

Qatar Qsuite appears on versions of four different aircraft types: select Boeing 777-200LRs , 777-300ERs , Airbus A350-900s and all of Qatar Airways' A350-1000s . What might be confusing for flyers, though, is that Qatar Airways also flies 777s and A350-900s with older seat types . Luckily, we have a guide that explains how to tell if your flight has the new suites on them, and we'll get into the specific routes and flight numbers they're currently on below.

Both the 777-200LR (operating on some flights to O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Dulles International Airport (IAD) and all flights to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and 777-300ER (operating on some flights to Chicago and Washington) have 42 Qsuites spread across two cabins. The forward cabin has six rows for a total of 24 seats, and the back cabin has five rows with a total of 18 seats.

The A350-1000 has 46 Qsuites in two cabins: the forward one has the bulk of them, with 38 in 10 rows, while the small aft cabin has just eight seats in two rows. The A350-900s with Qsuite have 36 of them in a single cabin of nine rows.

Qsuite amenities

Let's get down to what makes these suites so special . Like many of the other best business-class seats out there, they are arranged in a staggered 1–2–1 pattern.

The odd-numbered rows have rear-facing seats , while even-numbered rows have forward-facing ones. The rear-facing seats on the sides are closer to the window for more privacy, while those facing forward are closer to the aisle. In addition, those in the center sections are closer together when they're rear-facing and farther apart in the front-facing rows.

If you're confused by the configuration, you're not alone. But check out your flight's seat map either on SeatGuru or our sister site ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures) and you can easily figure out what your seat will be like.

Each Qsuite reclines to a fully lie-flat bed. Seat width is 21.5 inches on the A350 (either model) and 21 inches on the B777 models. Bed length is the same in all models: 80 inches.

Certain blocs of Qsuites in the center section can be combined into a few configurations. The seats that are set close together can become a double bed for couples or families traveling together.

There are also quad blocs in the center section where four seats can be opened up to create a coworking or leisure space for groups traveling together.

In addition, Qsuite has technological bells and whistles like light-up "Do Not Disturb" signs and 21.5-inch entertainment monitors with touch screen controls and over 4,000 menu options.

The media panels have universal power ports, USB ports, HDMI and contactless NFC capabilities so you can stream preselected playlists from the Qatar Airways app on your smartphone over the system.

In terms of soft amenities, Qatar Airways flights attendants hand out BRIC's amenity kits stocked with Castello Monte Vibiano skin care products and will provide The White Company sleepwear to passengers on long-haul and overnight flights.

Which routes can you currently fly in Qsuite? Many routes were suspended or altered during the pandemic, but these are the available routes with flights operating to/from Qatar:

A caveat for all of these: The airline swaps out aircraft from time to time. So when booking, be sure to verify the seat map for your flight carefully. Then keep checking on it before your actual travel dates to make sure your plane hasn't been swapped out for a model with different seats.

Using miles

Because of its membership in Oneworld, you have a few choices for using airline miles to book awards on Qatar Airways. Here are the four top ones with sample mileage requirements between Doha and various destinations.

American Airlines AAdvantage

Have you been stocking up on AAdvantage miles all these years? Now could be your chance to put them to use.

• Doha to Europe: 42,500 miles one-way, 85,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to the US: 70,000 miles one-way, 140,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to Asia 2 (China, Hong Kong, Thailand): 40,000 miles one-way, 80,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to Australia: 80,000 miles one-way, 160,000 round trip.

Transfer partners: Marriott Bonvoy and Bilt Rewards .

British Airways and Qatar Airways Avios

After Qatar Airways adopted Avios as its loyalty currency, British Airways matched its award pricing and lowered fuel surcharges. You will find identical award pricing and similar taxes and fees if you book with either Avios program.

• Doha to Paris: 43,000 Avios one-way, 86,000 round trip.
• Doha to US non-stop routes: 70,000 miles one-way, 140,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to Bangkok: 50,000 miles one-way, 100,000 miles round trip.

Transfer partners: American Express Membership Rewards , Capital One , Chase Ultimate Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy to British Airways Avios; Citi ThankYou to Qatar Airways Avios.

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

This program devalued in June 2018 , but might still be worth looking into for Qsuite awards. There isn't a published award chart for partner awards, but you can price out your tickets on Asia Miles' website .

• Doha to Europe: 61,000 miles one-way, 122,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to New York: 90,000 miles one-way, 180,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to Hong Kong: 61,000 miles one-way, 122,000 miles round trip.

One major downside to booking with Asia Miles is high taxes and fees. On a one-way flight from New York to Doha, you will pay $509 in addition to the miles you spend.

Transfer partners: American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Brex Cash, Capital One, Citi ThankYou Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy.

Taking into consideration taxes and fees -- as well as transfer partners -- your best bets are likely to be American Airlines AAdvantage miles or Avios. Your taxes and fees vary by route, but expect them to be under $100 round trip to the U.S. using AAdvantage miles and $150 to $250 with Avios, depending on the route.

Searching for and booking awards

We have several posts on this topic, including How to Search and Book Qatar Airways' Qsuite With Miles . However, as a refresher, the best way to search for Oneworld award availability is through the British Airways or Qantas websites.

If you're booking with American AAdvantage, you can also search on American's website. However, it's worth double-checking your results with the British Airways or Qantas website, as American's website sometimes fails to show all available award space.

If you find a flight on British Airways' website that isn't bookable on American's website, call American's AAdvantage desk to book it. If you plan to use Asia Miles, you can search availability through Asia Miles' own award search engine instead.

Keep a few things in mind before going on a mad dash searching for awards on all these routes. From my own personal experience, Qatar Airways awards tend to show up either far in advance or close in, but generally not in the few months out when most of us like to plan our trips.

The airline also tends to release more award space on newly-announced routes or when it swaps out aircraft on a route, so keep up on the news here on TPG to help you snag a seat on the route that you want.

Finally, be persistent. If you have dates and redemptions in mind, just search every few days and see what might come up. You might be surprised to find award seats released on some of the flights you're looking for.

So as not to end on a down note, though award space can be scarce, it is still available — even on premier routes like between Doha and New York and Doha and London. Here are a few sample awards I found to whet your appetite.

It may be more difficult to find space to the U.S., but now that all North American routes are flying Qsuites your chances improve.

Bottom line

Qatar Airways' Qsuite offers some of the best (if not the best ) business-class seats in the world. Closing doors, fluid configurations and top-notch service all make a flight in them nothing short of memorable. Luckily, it's also possible to book them with a number of different types of partner airline miles. With a little tenacity and savvy, you can book your own award and enjoy this truly unique experience for yourself.

Qatar offers several visa options for visitors. Here are the common types of visit visa options:

Gateway to Qatar

Qatar is centrally located globally, close to Europe, Africa, and Asia. Flights from around the world touch down at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport daily, making Qatar the perfect place for layovers and visits.

Doha, the capital city of Qatar, is modern and rapidly developing, with much construction underway. It is home to most of the country’s best museums and examples of cultural heritage. 

Qatar connects to various destinations worldwide, making it an extremely busy transit spot. In fact, Hamad International Airport (HIA) has fast become the global gateway for overseas travellers. Opened in April 2014, the state-of-the-art airport is conveniently located just south of Doha city.

HIA is certified as a 5 Star Airport by Skytrax and was ranked the Best Airport in the World at the 2021 and 2022 Skytrax World Airport Awards. The airport currently serves more than 30 million passengers annually and is undergoing further expansion to support more than 50 million.

Qatar Airways, the award-winning national carrier, is certified as a 5-Star Airline for its airport and onboard product and staff service quality.

The Qatar Airways network connects Doha with more than 150 popular destinations worldwide, including most major cities throughout the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia & North, and South America.

Cruise tourism brings over 100 thousand visitors annually to Qatar, enabling them to enjoy the many landmarks that are mere minutes from Doha Port. The peak season runs from October to May, allowing visitors to enjoy the country’s pleasant winter weather during that time.

Qatar has two major seasons: Summer and Winter. May to September can be considered summer, while December to February is the cooler season. March to April and October to November are the transition months.

Summer temperatures are routinely 50°C during the day and often more than 40°C at night. It’s important to wear sunblock, cover yourself and drink plenty of water when going outside during the day.

During cooler months (December to February), the temperatures average between 14°C and 25°C on most days.

Since most of the attractions are within a couple of hours distance from Doha, you do not have to stay at different hotels during your Qatar vacation.

Doha has the presence of almost all major hotel chains in the world. You can choose from a range of Qatar hotels from TripAdvisor .

Doha’s city centre is just 15 minutes drive from the airport by car. To get from HIA to the city, you can take Airport Taxis available at Arrivals Terminal or request your hotel to arrange a private hotel transfer. It is possible to rent a car at the airport or at the hotels. An international driving license is required for visitors to drive in Qatar.

For travelling around the city, you can use the official taxi network called Karwa Taxi or pre-book a taxi using mobile apps like Uber or Careem . Even though Qatar has a network of public buses, they are not recommended for first-time visitors as their frequency is not guaranteed.

Since Qatar is an Islamic country, it is important to dress appropriately. Loose-fitting and modesty-covering clothing is the preferred style. Women are not required to wear the hijab or veil their heads in public.

Since Qatar Riyal is pegged to US Dollar, the value of USD 1 is around QAR 3.64. Banks and ATMs across the country take major international credit cards and debit cards.

• Normally, the work week in Qatar is from Sunday to Thursday.
• Government offices operate from 7 am to 2 pm.
• Private offices operate from 8 am to 4 pm, or 9 am to 5 pm.

Hello. We arrive in Qatar at DOH November 24 at 6 AM. Are we allowed to leave the airport and visit the area for 8-10 hours that day? Thank you in advance for your reply.

Hi Robert, Due to the World Cup, the visa-on-arrival service (or any kind of tourist visa) is unavailable during that period. As per the current rule, you need a Hayya Card to visit Qatar from 1 November, and it is only available for those with a match ticket. There is still five weeks to go before your travel date. So please check back after a few weeks in case the rules change.

The Complete Guide to Qatar Airways Qsuites

Qatar Airways Qsuites is widely heralded to be the world’s best business class.

With a double bed in the sky, a round-table suite for groups of four, and immaculate hard and soft products, a trip in Qsuites is certain to please even the most discerning traveller.

In this guide, let’s take a look at the Qatar Airways Qsuites experience, aircraft, routes, and the best ways to book Qsuites using points.

The Qatar Airways Qsuites Experience

While technically classified as a business class product, Qatar Airways Qsuites launched in 2017 with the motto “First in Business”. The airline seriously elevated the business class experience by offering unique hard and soft products that even outclasses some airlines’ First Class offerings.

Ground Experience

Prior to getting onto the plane, passengers flying Qsuites out of the airline’s hub in Doha will have access to one of two gargantuan lounges.

If you are departing or connecting on a business class flight in Doha, you’ll enjoy complimentary access to the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge .

The Al Mourjan Business Lounge is spread across two levels and measures more than 100,000 square feet. With a capacity of over 1,000 passengers, the expansive space is equivalent to around 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

With this much real estate, there’s plenty of space to wine, dine, and relax. Choose from a hot and cold buffet, a sushi counter, or an à la carte dining menu during your stay.

You can sit next to the soothing water feature as you soak in your surroundings with a nice glass of sparkling wine . There are a number of beverage stations scattered throughout the lounge, should you need to quench your thirst.

If you’d like to shut your eyes for a bit, there are even dedicated nap areas scattered around the lounge.

In addition to a plethora of food options and work areas, there are two game rooms to help pass the time in a more leisurely manner.

The lounge can get quite crowded at times, but finding some space to yourself shouldn’t be too difficult, given the sheer size of the lounge.

The more impressive Al Safwa First Class Lounge is still within reach for Qsuites passengers.

Business class passengers may buy access to the Al Safwa First Class Lounge, albeit at a steep cost of 600 Qatari riyals ($210 CAD). Note that your stay will be limited to six hours if you enter this way, but you shouldn’t be too hard pressed to get your money’s worth.

This First Class lounge resembles a fine art museum, with installations from the Museum of Islamic Art in the cavernous hallways of the lounge.

The Al Safwa First Class Lounge is even equipped with private rooms that are essentially small hotel rooms. These secluded spaces can be booked for up to six hours at a time, and you’re sure to get some better rest than in the open-air nap areas in the Al Mourjan Business Lounge.

The Al Safwa First Class Lounge has some top-quality dining options with an à la carte menu. Furthermore, there’s a well-stocked bar with staff available to mix up a delicious concoction.

The lounge also has a full-service spa. Included with any paid spa treatment is the use of a jacuzzi, which is an experience not found in any other airport lounge around the world.

Consider the length of your stay and what you hope to get out of it when choosing between visiting the Al Mourjan Business Lounge for free and paying for the Al Safwa First Class Lounge.

The seats and amenities on Qatar Airways Qsuites are amongst the best you can find on any business class product.

The generously spacious Qsuites are best experienced by closing your full-length suite doors, providing almost complete privacy. 

Along with abundant storage space, the seat includes a control panel, which allows you to fully customize the configuration of your seat.

This, of course, includes turning it into a lie-flat bed – a must for any premium business class suite.

On that note, Qsuites is renowned for having a “double bed in the sky”. In fact, it’s one of only two business class products to offer such a configuration, with the other being Singapore Airlines A380 business class.

It’s important to mention that while the middle seats configure into side-by-side beds, it’s only from the waist up. So, if you’re looking to get a little more cozy with your seatmate, you’ll have to wait until you’ve reached your final destination.

Entirely unique to Qatar Airways Qsuites is a seating concept known as the “Quad”.

In the Quad, four passengers in specific seats can slide a partition behind their entertainment units and sit facing each other. In the middle of everyone is a table, which is perfect for sharing a meal, playing cards, or scheming a plan to conquer the world.

Anyone who wishes to excuse themselves from the Quad configuration can just as easily slide the partitions back in place and enjoy the complete privacy that Qsuites offer.

Qsuites passengers are also given pajamas as an amenity. This is another unique onboard item that’s usually reserved for First Class passengers or select other top-tier business class products.

Food and Drink

Upon boarding, passengers are offered a choice of welcome beverage, including select Champagnes such as the colourful Taittinger Rosé.

While not quite as dazzling as the meals offered on First Class flights, the dining experience in Qatar Airways Qsuites is still impressive. In keeping with the spirit of “First in Business”, the airline offers an elevated multi-course dining selection with attentive service from the cabin crew.

The meal options may change depending on your route, as Qatar Airways places a heavy emphasis on offering seasonal and geography-specific menus on many of their flagship routes.

Those travelling in groups up to four will appreciate the option of being able to dine together in the middle seats, creating a social and lively atmosphere akin to dining in a restaurant on the ground.

Qatar Airways Qsuites Aircraft Cabins

Qatar Airways Qsuites can be found on four different types of aircraft: the Boeing 777-200LR, the Boeing 777-300ER, the Airbus A350-900, and the Airbus A350-1000.

Note that if you’re flying in business class with Qatar Airways, there’s a chance you may end up on the older business class product, which pales in comparison to the quality of Qsuites. Fortunately, there are a few ways to check which business class product you’ll get.

To verify whether or not the aircraft you’ll be on has Qsuites, you’ll simply want to look at the seat map for your flight. You can use a tool such as ExpertFlyer or SeatGuru for this.

All Qsuites cabin configurations are arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 format. 

All of Qatar Airways’ older business class seats have a 2-2-2 layout.

It’s important to note that Qatar Airways’s Boeing 787-9 business class product also follows the 1-2-1 seat format, but it’s not the same as Qsuites. 

There is significantly less space, and while technically there is a double bed for couples sitting in the middle seats, the angle of the lie-flat beds makes it much less desirable.

Boeing 777-200LR & Boeing 777-300ER

While the actual hard and soft product on the four different aircraft that feature Qsuites are largely the same, there are subtle differences to the size of the cabin for each aircraft.

There are currently nine Boeing 777-200LRs in the Qatar Airways fleet. Of these, seven of the nine feature the Qsuites cabin.

There are currently 48 Boeing 777-300ERs in the Qatar Airways fleet. Of these, 37 out of the 48 feature the Qsuites cabin.

On both aircraft, the business class cabin features a total of 42 seats spread across 11 rows in two cabins. The seats and the cabins are arranged in the same format.

Odd-numbered rows in the forward cabin have backward-facing seats. In the rearward cabin, even-numbered window seats and odd-numbered middle seats face backwards.

The window seats in Rows 1, 3, 5, 8, and 10 are flush against the window. These offer the greatest amount of privacy for solo travellers. 

Odd-numbered middle seats are also backward-facing, and are situated right next to each other in a “honeymoon seat” format. These seats combine to create a double bed in the sky. 

If you’d like to experience the double bed, be sure to select any of the “E” and “F” seats in Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11.

Should you wish to set up the “Quad,” you’ll want to select any of the following quadruples of seats:

• Seats 1E, 1F, 2D, and 2G
• Seats 3E, 3F, 4D and 4G
• Seats 5E, 5F, 6D and 6G
• Seats 7E, 7F, 8D and 8G
• Seats 9E, 9F, 10D, and 10G

Airbus A350-900

There are currently 333 Airbus A350-900s in the Qatar Airways fleet. Of these, only 10 feature Qsuites, so be sure to check the configuration if you’re flying on one of these.

The business class cabin features a total of 36 seats spread across nine rows.

All odd-numbered seats are rearward facing. 

The odd-numbered window seats offer the greatest amount of privacy, as you’re tucked away against the window. Look for window seats in Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 for the most private experience.

The “honeymoon seats” that feature the double bed in the sky are the odd-numbered middle seats. On this aircraft, choose from the “E” and “F” seats in Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. 

All even-numbered seats are forward-facing. The window seats are closer to the aisle and offer less privacy than the rearward-facing window seats.

Meanwhile, even-numbered middle seats are farther away from your neighbour, making them more ideal if you’re a solo traveller but not in a window seat.

Should you wish to set up the Quad, you’ll want to select any of the following quadruples of seats:

Airbus A350-1000

There are currently 19 Airbus A350-1000s in the Qatar Airways fleet. Fortunately, all of them feature Qsuites, so you’re sure to have a great seat on any of these aircraft.

The business class cabin features 46 seats spread out across 12 rows.

Odd-numbered rows have backward-facing window seats flush to the side of the aircraft, right up against the window. Choose a window seat in Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 for the most privacy as a solo traveller.

Odd-numbered middle seats are also backward-facing “honeymoon seats”. As above, choose from the pairs of “E” and “F” seats in Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 to experience the double bed in the sky. 

The Quad can be assembled if you select any of the following quadruples of seats:

• Seats 11E, 11F, 12D and 12G

Qatar Airways Qsuites Routes

With flights to over 150 destinations worldwide, Qatar Airways has an extensive global network. 

On flights to North America, the following routes usually offer Qsuites. 

In addition, Qsuites are also commonly offered to Qatar Airways’s flagship destinations in Europe, South America, Asia, and Australia. On the other hand, minor routes to smaller airports are less likely to come with Qsuites. 

You’ll want to double-check that your flight has Qsuites both when booking and before your flight, as Qsuites aren’t necessarily offered on all routes all the time.

Furthermore, there may be last-minute aircraft swaps, so be sure to keep an eye on your aircraft so you’re not left disappointed.

If you’re planning a flight with Qatar Airways elsewhere in the world, the easiest way to tell if your plane will feature Qsuites is to search on the Qatar Airways website.

On the search results, a “Q” in the top-right corner of the result indicates that the plane features Qsuites.

How to Redeem Points for Qatar Airways Qsuites

Since Qatar Airways belongs to the Oneworld alliance, there are many loyalty programs through which you can secure a coveted Qsuites seats.

Qatar Airways Avios

In March 2022, Qatar Airways joined the Avios loyalty program , allowing for Avios to be easily transferred between British Airways, Qatar Airways, Air Lingus, and Iberia.

This partnership is certainly a boon for anyone wishing to book Qsuites, as British Airways Avios is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards , RBC Avion , and HSBC Rewards .

Qatar Airways Avios is perhaps the cheapest and best way to book Qsuites with points, as the rates and additional surcharges are fairly reasonable.

A one-way flight from Montreal to Doha costs 70,000 Qatar Airways Avios, along with $156.95 in additional taxes and fees.

You could tack on another Qsuites flight and pay only 75,000 Avios to continue to closer destinations in the Middle East such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Muscat.

It’d cost 80,000 Avios to continue onward to cities a bit further away, such as Amman, Cairo, or New Delhi.

Heading to aspirational Indian Ocean destinations, such as the Maldives or Seychelles, would cost 85,000 Avios.

Furthermore, heading from the east coast of North America to South East Asia or South Africa would cost around 95,000 Avios.

You can use a calculator on the Qatar Airways website to estimate the number of Avios you need for a particular routing.

These prices are certainly competitive when compared to similar routings and cabins with other programs, such as Aeroplan or Air France/KLM Flying Blue .

While British Airways Avios can also be used to book Qsuites at favourable rates, the number of Avios required for multiple segments is calculated a bit differently. In these situations, it’s almost always better to instantly transfer the points 1:1 to Qatar Airways Avios and then book through there.

For simple direct flights, the points requirement and additional costs will be very comparable when using British Airways Avios to using Qatar Airways Avios.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan

Alaska Airlines joined Oneworld in March 2021 , and shortly thereafter unlocked the ability to book flights with Qatar Airways with Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan .

Flying from Montreal to Doha in Qsuites can be booked for as few as 85,000 miles and $67 in taxes and fees. This is slightly more than using Avios, but the surcharges are cheaper.

In fact, Alaska Airlines is known for having some of the cheapest additional fees. Redeeming 85,000 miles to fly Qsuites from Seattle to Doha only costs $21 in taxes and fees.

As a point of reference, there are much better uses for Alaska miles with the other sweet spots in the program, such as flying in First Class with Japan Airlines or Cathay Pacific – especially when Qsuites can also be booked with currencies that are easier to come by. 

American Airlines AAdvantage

American Airlines AAdvantage follows a similar redemption chart to British Airways and Qatar Airways.

Flights from the US and Canada to the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent cost 70,000 miles in business class.

The main advantage of American AAdvantage over British Airways and Qatar Airways Avios lies in the region-based award chart. Essentially, you can stop in Doha for a layover and then continue onward to another city in the Middle East or Indian subcontinent for no additional miles.

Note that when looking for Qsuites flights on the Qatar Airways, Alaska Airlines, or American Airlines websites, you may come across award pricing that is much more than the prices shown above.

This happens because the “Saver” level award seats have been booked up. (On the Qatar Airways Avios website, for example, this is marked by a small green flag marked with “Q2”.)

While you’re still able to book seats at a higher price, you’re better off looking elsewhere or monitoring for “Saver” level award space in the future.

Qatar Airways Qsuites Award Availability

When booking far in advance, Qatar Airways tends to release two award seats on most routes. While rare, you’ll also sometimes find up to four award seats on a single route, which would be ideal if you’d like to experience the “Quad” all on points.

The best way to score a trip in Qsuites is to plan well ahead of your departure date, as fellow travellers tend to snatch up award seats quickly. This is especially the case if you plan to fly during peak travel periods in the summer or over any holidays.

For example, as of July 2022, there is bountiful award space throughout Spring 2023 on all North American routes.

However, if you’re looking for seats around World Cup 2022 , you’re out of luck, as the airline completely blocked off award space during this time period.

Unlike some other airlines, Qatar Airways isn’t known for reliably releasing last-minute award availability. You may find extra seats becoming available as the departure date approaches, but don’t necessarily count on it.  

Tips & Tricks for Qatar Airways Qsuites

With three different loyalty programs for optimally booking Qatar Airways Qsuites, the slight differences between each program can result in some excellent flying experiences to far-flung destinations.

In fact, the best sweet spots are found in bookings made with Doha as a layover, and then continuing onwards to other destinations.

With American AAdvantage, for example, this can be done for no additional miles to anywhere else in the Middle East, and with a relatively few additional miles to fly other places.

For example, flying from Seattle to Johannesburg via Doha, with a total of 22 hours and 35 minutes in Qsuites, prices out at only 75,000 AAdvantage miles.

You could also consider nesting a few Qsuites flights within a Multi-Carrier Award using British Airways Avios. Since multi-carrier awards need to be booked with partner airlines anyway, why not book a few with one of the best in the business?

If you’d like to fully immerse yourself in the best of Qatar Airways, consider flying to or from Doha on a long-haul Qsuites flight. From Doha, look to redeem points on one of the many short-haul routes within the Gulf region, which are marketed as First Class rather than business class. 

This way, you’ll get the best of both worlds – you’ll experience all that the Al Safwa First Class Lounge has to offer by virtue of your “First Class” ticket, while still having a proper long-haul Qsuites flight to look forward to.

77W Qsuites forward or rear cabin? My wife and I are flying on the Qsuites 77W ATL-DOH and DOH-ATL. We actually both prefer window seats; on ATL-DOH we’re in 5K/6J. On DOH-ATL, we’re currently in 8K/9J. However, 3A/4B and 5A/6B are also avaialble. Do we stick with the rear cabin, or move to fwd cabin? And if fwd cabin is better, do we go with 3/4 or 5/6? I see every business flight in August from Montreal to Doha at 140,000 Avios points on the Qatar airways website… Am I missing/doing something wrong? Just as an example, August 27th, or 28th…. I was trying to book a March trip, and was getting 140,000 each way as well… Thanks…

Bad behaviour on planes is on the rise. Do we need an etiquette guide?

With passenger misconduct worse than ever, debrett’s has updated its guide to good manners while travelling — and we should know better, says liz edwards.

B ehaving with courtesy and consideration towards our fellow passengers isn’t complicated, is it? Making it through a flight without getting into a row or incurring the wrath of those around you really ought to be pretty straightforward.

Yet these days, reports of passenger misconduct only seem to be on the up. Last week alone, an easyJet flight from Glasgow to Hurghada had to divert to offload a couple who’d been abusive to fellow passengers and crew — footage showed cheering as they were removed — and Ryanair’s Dublin-Ibiza flight had to stop in Mallorca so a group could be deposited with the Civil Guard.

Last November the International Air Transport Association, which represents 300 airlines worldwide, reported that incidents of “unruly and disruptive passenger incidents” were increasing — one incident for every 568 flights in 2022, compared with one for every 835 the previous year. I encourage you to browse the Instagram account @passengershaming for its excellent examples of seatback-jostling arguments, full-volume film-viewing, premature disembarkation attempts and live inflight pedicures.

All this bad behaviour is good news for one group, though: the etiquette experts, who are in greater demand than ever.

Last month the 255-year-old authority on behaviour, Debrett’s, released the latest edition of its A-Z of Modern Manners , including a section on travel that has been updated and expanded since the last publication in 2018. Advice includes, “Avoid encroaching on other passengers’ territory by keeping your elbows to yourself and bags stowed away”, “Behave courteously towards the flight crew and be sure to thank them for their service” and “Think twice before initiating a conversation with your neighbours … Avoid jokes about turbulence, terrorists or the competence of the flight crew”.

There is also an all-new section concerning children on planes. “Their behaviour will be much more tolerable if you, the parent, are clearly doing your best to contain your child’s behaviour,” it says. “I’ve been asked about this a lot,” explains Debrett’s etiquette adviser Liz Wyse. “It’s become more of a preoccupation and people seem to be more irritated by the issue.”

Are people getting more irritable or more badly behaved — or both? Wyse agrees it may be the combination, but says modern technology doesn’t help. “Many people in transit lose themselves in their devices — but you have to be focused on the world around you if you’re to have good manners,” she says.

Tips common to Debrett’s and other experts include the suggestions to check before reclining your seat, then doing so gently; to be mindful of personal hygiene; to avoid rushing to leave the plane.

William Hanson, director of the etiquette training institute The English Manner, which works with airlines and private jet companies, adds that armrests are problematic: “But we don’t need to sit like Abraham Lincoln. I call it an elbow rest — so there is room for two.” He says his greatest personal bugbear on planes is “people using their own devices without headphones. If everyone did it, it would be a complete cacophony. If you have an iPad, put headphones on.”

Honestly, though, these are simple rules to stick to. Perhaps if we were undertaking Eliza Doolittle-like feats of transformation and learning we would need our Henry Higginses. But we are not faced with a baffling array of cutlery, or a dowager duchess expecting to be addressed correctly, or a horse that needs cheering on with decorum. To the more reasonable among us, many of these rules state the bleeding obvious — don’t they all boil down to “be considerate”? (Or, if we’ve not seen it on enough posters, mugs and T-shirts by now, “be kind”?)

Hanson maintains they’re not so obvious. “Speed of innovation and new technology means we have a lot of new ways to annoy other people,” he says. In fact he favours the inclusion of a short etiquette guide along with the safety video or card. If we must, I urge Etihad and Qatar Airways to collaborate in producing EtiQat Etiquette.

Meanwhile, what if our fellow passengers forget their manners and indulge in excessive noise, bad smells or unseemly shoving? “You can really only control your own actions, not those of others,” Hanson says. “So do what most Brits do: be inwardly livid, and do nothing about it.”

Frequent flyer program members earn points from doing exactly that: flying frequently. Keen point earners may also invest in a frequent flyer credit card to increase their points balance with every purchase, or earn points via other means specified by their frequent flyer program.

Each program is different, and that includes whether or not your frequent flyer points have an expiration date.

This guide runs through the two primary frequent flyer memberships in Australia, Qantas and Virgin, followed by an overview of international airline programs and their frequent flyer expiry dates.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Qantas Frequent Flyer is Australia’s largest frequent flyer membership, boasting 14.7 million members as of 2023. To join directly, you’ll be charged a joining fee of $99.50. However, there are many ways to avoid this fee, including by signing up to a Qantas Frequent Flyer Credit Card .

To keep your Qantas Frequent Flyer points active, you’ll need to earn or use your points at least once every 18 months. This 18-month period starts from the date of your last activity on your membership: for example, if the last time you had earned Qantas Points was from an eligible flight, your last date of activity would be when the flight was taken.

Virgin Velocity

The loyalty program of Virgin Australia is known as Velocity Frequent Flyer, with a membership base of 11 million members as of 2022. Unlike the Qantas program, membership to Velocity is free, and you can begin earning points immediately.

Virgin Velocity points expire after 24 months of account inactivity; as is the case with Qantas, this means not spending or earning any points within this period. However, you can see, Virgin Velocity gives its members an extra six months before expiry compared to Qantas Frequent Flyer.

“Essentially, every time you earn, redeem or buy points, you’re renewing your points for another two years,” the website states.

This means if you had a Velocity Rewards Credit Card that you used regularly, you’d never have to worry about your balance expiring even if you weren’t flying—as every transaction on your credit card would earn you points.

Note that receiving points via family pool transfers won’t count as account activity.

American Airlines AAdvantage

Looking at overseas frequent flyer programs with major airlines that serve Australia, we’ll start alphabetically: American Airlines. This membership program is known as AAdvantage, with points known as ‘AAdvantage miles’. It’s free to join, and can be worthwhile for Australians considering AAdvantage miles can be redeemed on Qantas flights.

American Airlines AAdvantage miles expire after 24 months of inactivity; any type of qualifying activity on your account will restart this period.

It’s worth noting that customers under the age of 21 are not subject to this expiration period; however, as soon as the customer turns 21 years old, the 24-month policy will begin—even if the AAdvantage miles were earned prior.

British Airways Executive Club

For a frequent flyer membership with British Airways, you’ll need to join their Executive Club—which is free.

The loyalty currency is known as ‘Avios’, and is the same across partner airlines Qatar, Iberia and Aer Lingus. This means you can combine Avios from an Iberia Plus, AerClub or Qatar Airways Privilege Club account and choose how (or where) you spend them.

Unused Avios will expire after 36 months of inactivity; so, as long as you collect, spend, buy or share at least one Avios every 36 months, your frequent flyer points will remain.

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

In August 2022, Marco Polo Club and Asia Miles combined into one rewards program: Cathay Pacific’s Asia Miles. Pre-existing members were automatically enrolled in the new program, while new members can sign up via Cathay Pacific for free.

Asia Miles will remain active as long as you earn or redeem on your account at least once every 18 months.

Like other frequent flyer programs, it’s not only flying that can earn you points. Cathay Pacific’s website states it has more than 800 partners worldwide that you can spend with to earn Asia Miles, across shopping, credit cards, dining, hotels and more.

SkyMiles is Delta’s loyalty program, which is free to join and, unusually for a frequent flyer program, does not have an expiry date. Your miles will remain in your account as long as it is open.

As Delta is US-based, it may not be as enticing to join as membership programs closer to home are. Yet, with more than 20 airline partners across the globe—including the nearby China Airlines and Vietnam Airlines—it can still serve Australians looking to gain miles without the fuss of regularly earning or spending points.

Australians can also earn SkyMiles on Airbnb stays worldwide (when booking through the dedicated Delta-Airbnb site ) and choose SkyMiles as the reward of choice when staying in global hotel chains such as Marriott Bonvoy or World of Hyatt.

Emirates Skywards

Emirates Skywards is yet another free membership program, allowing frequent travelers to earn points—Skywards—through travel and more.

The expiry date for Emirates Skywards isn’t as clear-cut as other programs, however. Instead, Skywards expire at the end of your birthday month, three years after they were earned.

For example, if your last flight was in January 2023 and your birthday is September 10, your Skywards would expire on September 30, 2026.

You can’t extend the validity of your Skywards through account activity, either. Instead, you have the option to pay to extend them an additional 12 months from the aforementioned expiry date.

Etihad Guest

Being a member of the Etihad Guest loyalty program is free, and allows you to earn Etihad Airways Guest Miles.

Activities that allow you to earn these miles include earning, spending or buying them. Inactivity in your account will see your Etihad Guest Miles expire after 18 months.

To avoid this, you need to make a transaction; the first qualifying activity in a month resets the expiry date again.

For Etihad Platinum Guests, there is no expiration of miles as long as they maintain their Platinum status.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer is another global membership that allows Australian travellers to earn points both locally and abroad, and is also free to join.

After earning KrisFlyer Miles, members have three years to use them—regardless of whether or not there is activity within the account..

You can extend this expiration date for six months for a fee; however, Singapore Airlines notes there is no way to get KrisFlyer Miles back if they have expired.

Members of Singapore Airline’s PPS Club are exempt from the expiration rules.

United Airlines MileagePlus

Like Delta’s SkyMiles, United Airlines’ MileagePlus is a program whose miles never expire.

It’s free to join, and United is part of Star Alliance, the biggest airline alliance in the world, which includes our nearby carriers of Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, and Thai Airways.

Outside of Star Alliance, MileagePlus members can also earn (and redeem) miles when flying with Virgin Australia.

As you can see from our guide, all frequent flyer programs vary with their conditions on whether or not your frequent flyer points will expire. This includes how you can extend your expiration date, and how long the validity period lasts for.
