13 Road Trip Hacks to Keep Kids Sane on a Long Drive

Family road trips – in a car or an RV – are a fantastic way to use up those vacation days and create lasting memories with your kids. However, traveling with young ones can sometimes be challenging, especially during long drives.

Keeping kids entertained on the road can seem daunting, but luckily, the Reddit community has loads of advice. A recent thread featured seasoned travelers sharing their best tips for smooth road trips with children.

Let’s explore the 13 most popular road trip hacks to prevent boredom and minimize backseat disagreements:

1. Prepare For Your Return Home

A unique road trip hack for parents traveling with children is to prepare for your return home. If you have everything prepared in advance, you’ll experience a smooth and comfortable return. 

A seasoned road-tripper who travels with their kids told Reddit, “If you’re anything like my family, we are wiped out when we get home and often a bit stressed. Having everything dialed in for us when we walk in the door allows us to stick the landing a bit more.”

2. “Pack A Sick Kit”’

One Reddit user was quick to say, “The one thing worse than a kiddo getting sick on a long trip is being unprepared to handle the kiddo getting sick on a long trip.” We agree!

For most parents, motion sickness is part and parcel of a road trip with a small child. Therefore, you need to carry the essentials just in case. 

Fortunately, we don’t have to guess what those are because someone on Reddit told us what to pack.  They advised packing emesis bags, paper towels, ginger drops, wipes, and toilet paper. 

3. Purchase A Headrest Stand

One of the top comments on Reddit told parents to buy a headrest stand for their children. According to one Redditor, headrest stands can be bought on Amazon and hung on the back of your car seats.

The same person told Reddit this item comes in useful because each kid has a device they can use to stay occupied and let you focus on the road. He also recommended purchasing Bluetooth headphones so the whole car doesn’t have to listen to whatever is on the screen.

4. Pack A Lunch Box

A common tip on Reddit was to pack a lunch box before you set off. One top comment read, “I always pack a lunch box at the start of the day and have lots of snacks.”

By doing this, you won’t have to stop for food, which should help you reach your final destination quicker. The food you pack can also be used as a distraction.

If your child starts complaining about being bored, pass them a snack. The longer it takes to eat the snack the better!

5. Stop For A Couple Of Hours

A lot of Redditors from the r/Parenting community think it’s important to stop for two or three hours at least once. One community member said, “I stop generally every 2 hours for a walk and play time depending on where we are.”

Meanwhile, another Redditor left a comment that read, “We take a long lunch, often stopping at a splash pad for at least a couple hours on lengthy summer trips.” Letting your children play keeps them from getting bored and it helps burn off energy.

If you’re lucky, they might take a long nap afterward.

6. Add An Element Of Mystery To Every Journey

If you want to keep your kids occupied without stopping and spending money, follow Reddit’s advice and make every journey more interesting by adding an element of mystery. 

One Redditor commented, “I told my kids during our cross-Canada bus rides when they were little that we would be traveling through some pretty wild country, they might like to keep an eye out for wild Pokémon.”

Another reader does something similar but tells their children to look out for Big Foot. 

7. Let Your Children Pick The Music

Another super simple way to keep your children occupied during a road trip is to let them pick the music. Someone who uses this hack told Reddit that “Everyone gets one song and we just keep going around.”

You might get fed up with Baby Shark, but this is a great way to keep your kids entertained!

8. Stop For A Milkshake

Making pit stops for food and drink is a surefire way to keep your kids onside. However, the right option could keep your children occupied for longer, and someone on Reddit believes a milkshake is perfect.

The Redditor said, “Milkshakes take a while to drink so they keep them occupied for a bit.” Furthermore, she believes the best time to stop for a milkshake is when there’s an hour of driving left. 

We don’t know about you but stopping for a milkshake sounds pretty great. However, one user was concerned about the potential mess and car sickness.

9. Create A Kid’s Surprise Bag

Road trips can be long and tiring so anything that keeps your kids engaged is going to make things easier. Some Redditors have found an amazing solution.

That solution is to make a surprise bag. The user who suggested this idea fills a small bag with activities and treats. The bags are then given to their children when they get bored.

One Redditor said, “This is what I do and it works so well,” while another told readers to, “Buy a bunch of random things from the dollar store and hand them out when the novelty of the prior one wears off.”

10. Drive At Night

One of the simplest things you can do to make your road trip easier is travel at night. According to Reddit, night driving is a great solution to traveling long distances with bored children.

Someone told Reddit that they use this hack because “You can really get some of the long stretches of driving done without extending it for stops.” Another described the experience as glorious!

A lot of parents start their trip after dinner. They then set up a movie or audiobook for their kids and let them fall asleep.

11. Reward Good Behavior With Treats

One community member shared an unconventional approach. She told Reddit “[her] friend takes a family size bag of M&M’s and when the kids are good they give them a couple and when they are bad they throw a few out the window.”

This is certainly a unique road trip hack but according to the user, it does work. Other Redditors loved the idea, one saying, “This is the funniest parenting technique that I think I’ve ever heard.”

Maybe this is something you can try next time your child misbehaves.

12. “Google Map Playgrounds Along Your Route”

One Redditor told readers that he keeps his children occupied by finding plenty of playgrounds to stop at. He picks multiple playgrounds along the route and stops every one or two hours to let his kids run around and take a break.

Another Redditor who uses this hack commented, “This is my biggest hack too. If you are with another adult, one of you handles the kids at the park while the other heads to get gas.”

However, some readers disagreed, with one saying, “Stopping at parks is a great idea. But every 1-1.5 hours? How do you make any progress?”

13. Use Cloth Diaper Covers

When asked for road trip hacks for kids, the r/Parenting community didn’t disappoint. However, one suggestion stood out more than others. That suggestion was to always dress babies in diapers and a cloth diaper cover.

The reasoning according to one Redditor is that “having elastic around the legs and back of the diaper really helps prevent car seat blowouts.” The same Redditor even offered brands parents can buy the covers from.

Their top recommendations were Thirsties and Esembly!

A few trip photos from Holland

This was a little long in coming and I’m grateful for the help YLF gave me in my planning for my tulip bike tour in mid-April. I accomplished packing a carry-on for two weeks although by the last few days, I was wishing for some variety.

I learned that while the bike trip was exhilarating and unique, I need variety in my travel life and a two-hour bike tour would have sufficed. Views were awesome, however!

I’ll be looking to you for help when I visit the Scottish Highlands in mid-July on a Road Scholar tour, especially for footwear (seeking cute weatherproof booties that are super comfortable or even some faux Chelsea rubber galoshes!), but that’s later.

In the meantime, here are some photos I’ve screenshotted four-up to simplify things.

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek Firecracker (Sharan) and Runcarla, and I would ride longer than two hours and could actually do a day trip or a weekend trip and have fun with that which is probably what I really meant. It’s just that I want to experience so much in the time I have left and even a contemplative walking tour with writing, journaling and poetry would add a different experience and another form of travel and uniqueness.

What I found out and it’s been most helpful in my personal life is that I accomplished something that I had never attempted before and that is a true confidence builder. So, yes, this is a trip I will remember forever and the adventure of it all brings me lots of joy.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Return Home to U.S. Following First Official Tour Post-Royal Life

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were spotted jetting into LAX on May 14 following their whirlwind trip to Nigeria

• Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have returned home to California following their three-day trip to Nigeria
• The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were spotted arriving at LAX on May 14 after a busy schedule in the west African country
• Meghan and Harry's visit to Nigeria marked their first international tour since stepping back from their royal roles in 2020

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are back home after three nonstop days in Nigeria .

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex landed in Los Angeles on May 14 following their visit to the West African country at the invitation of the Chief of Defense Staff, Nigeria's highest-ranking military official on May 10-12.

Meghan, 42, and Harry, 39, were spotted arriving at Los Angeles International Airport and leaving a private suite there before heading home in a white SUV.

Their return to L.A. came amid their organization, The Archewell Foundation, being declared delinquent by the California Registry of Charities and Foundations. A spokesperson for the foundation later refuted this claim as they told PEOPLE in a statement the foundation remains "in good standing."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's trip to Nigeria was significant as it was their first international tour since stepping back from their royal roles in 2020 and relocating to Meghan's home state of California. 

PEOPLE's chief foreign correspondent Simon Perry exclusively joined the trip to Nigeria, covering the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's 11 outings during Harry and Meghan's first time in the country.

Harry and Meghan hit the ground running when they arrived on May 10, extending Harry's travels abroad following a solo stay in the U.K. for a Service of Thanksgiving commemorating 10 years of the Invictus Games . He did not see King Charles or Prince William during his time in London, though PEOPLE understands that invitations were extended to the Invictus service on May 8.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex began their trip in Abuja at Lightway Academy school, where they revealed that their Archewell Foundation is expanding its partnership with the GEANCO Foundation to include mental health resources and training for young people.

Harry and Meghan then visited the Chief of Defense staff headquarters, where they paid homage to their host country through fashion . The couple dressed in the colors of the green and white Nigerian flag, calling to the royal family's informal practice of paying homage to countries they are visiting by dressing in national colors .

The Duke of Sussex continued solo to Kahuna, where he met the governor and spent time at the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna. While at the hospital, Harry toured the wards and met young men recovering from various injuries, including gunshot wounds, ambushes by Boko Haram and limb loss due to blasts.

Harry's warm nature was on display at the patient's bedsides, where he took one young man's hand in a gesture reminiscent of his late mother, Princess Diana .

"Are you going to try for the Invictus Games team? Are you preparing for that?" the Duke asked 23-year-old Corp Yusef amid his rehabilitation after being shot through the knee. "Don't disappoint us or him! We'll see you there," he said, referring to his friend David Wiseman, who is overseeing the international expansion of the Invictus Games.

Nigeria participated in the Invictus Games for the first time at the latest cycle of the competition in September 2023, and it was previously announced that the itinerary for Harry and Meghan's Nigeria trip would highlight the international adaptive sports tournament Harry founded as a vehicle for healing for wounded, injured and sick service personnel in 2014.

The couple kicked off the second day of their stay on May 11 at Nigeria: Unconquered , a national charity working in collaboration with the Invictus Games Foundation. The stop focused on sports recovery, and Harry hit the court for a sitting volleyball match. 

Desola Akanbi, 47, told PEOPLE her 9-year-old daughter was especially excited to connect with Meghan.

"She’s always wanted to meet her. She said last night, ‘When am I going to meet ‘Auntie Meghan?’ " she said. 

The Duchess of Sussex revealed on her podcast Archetypes that she learned she is 43% Nigerian after having her genealogy done, and received an especially warm welcome at their next stop.

“Princess Meghan is a Nigerian!" Abike Dabiri Erewa, chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, said at the reception for military families and the widow association at the Defense Headquarters Officers Mess in Abuja.

The Duchess of Sussex stepped out for her own solo event later in the day,  joining Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, to co-host a panel discussion focused on Women in Leadership.

Meghan spoke with joy about discovering her Nigerian heritage a few years ago, revealing that the first thing that she did was "call my mom [ Doria Ragland ], because I wanted to know if she had any awareness of it."

"Being African-American, part of it is really not knowing so much about your lineage or background, where you come from specifically. And it was exciting for both of us to discover more and understand what that really means," Meghan said on stage, where she proudly called Nigeria "my country."

Elsewhere in the wide-ranging conversation on heritage, motherhood, career building and more, the Duchess of Sussex said she loved "being a mom" to Prince Archie , 5, and Princess Lilibet , 2, calling her kids " very chatty " and sweet. 

On May 12, Meghan and Harry received a festive welcome at the airport in Lagos on their third official day away. The Duchess of Sussex stylishly arrived in a blue traditional Nigerian skirt gifted to her during their visit to Abuja , after joking at the women's leadership panel that she needed to "wear more color, so I can fit in with all of you and your incredible fashion!" 

The couple then headed to Ilupeju Senior Grammar School for a basketball clinic with the charity Giants of Africa, where Meghan received Mother's Day wishes on the holiday in the U.S. and Harry showed off his skills on the court. 

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wrapped up the trip at a reception at the State Governor House in Lagos and a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.

Ending their journey in Lagos held special significance as it mirrored a trip by Prince Harry's parents, King Charles and Princess Diana , on an official state visit in 1990.

"For Prince Harry, this trip to the country has been very interesting and informative,"  the governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said at the final reception. "He has seen a lot and is still soaking in a great deal. One of the things we hope he will take away is the diversity and the extent of how vast our country is, and how we continue to ensure that we live together in peace and harmony."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Spotted on Anniversary Weekend Date Night After Nigeria Trip

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated their return to the U.S. after their trip to Nigeria by stepping out to dinner with friends.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were spotted at Lucky’s steakhouse in Montecito, California, with their friends Brian and Tracy Robbins on Saturday, May 18, per Tatler . The night out came one day before the pair officially marked their sixth wedding anniversary.

Harry, 39, and Meghan, 42, wed on May 19, 2018 at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Meghan sported a stunning white long-sleeved gown by Givenchy while Harry sported his military garb for the televised ceremony, which was attended by royal family members, world leaders and the pair’s celebrity friends.

The twosome previously hung out with Brian, the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon CEO, and his wife earlier this year at the Jamaica premiere of Bob Marley: One Love in January.

Harry and Meghan enjoyed their California date night nearly two weeks after they kicked off their three-day visit to Nigeria. They began their trip, which commemorated the 10th anniversary of Harry’s Invictus Games, by touring and meeting with students of the Lightway Academy in Abuja on May 10.

It was during the school visit that Meghan shared an adorable story about her and Harry’s daughter, Princess Lilibet, 2. “Our daughter, Lili, she’s much, much tinier than you guys. She’s about to turn 3,” she told students. “A few weeks ago, she looked at me and she would just see the reflection in my eyes. She [said], ‘Mama, I see me in you.’” (The pair also share son Prince Archie, 5.)

Meghan jokingly described her kids as “very chatty [and] sweet” while speaking at a women in leadership panel the following day.

In addition to doing her own hair and makeup during the Africa trip, Meghan also sported one of her late mother-in-law Princess Diana ’s necklaces while attending a reception for military families on May 11. According to People , the gold necklace, which featured a diamond cross, was a “recent gift” from Harry to Meghan.

While riding on the high of the trip, the couple made headlines for a potential controversy as California Attorney General Rob Bonta declared Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation as “delinquent,” stating that the duo had not paid registration fees for their organization since the beginning of May.

“An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds,” Bonta’s statement read. “The organization may also be subject to penalties and its registration may be suspended or revoked by the Registry.”

Us Weekly learned that while the foundation’s paperwork was not filed on time, a physical check for the fees was sent but not received and a new check has since been sent.

In a May 14 statement, a spokesperson for the Archewell Foundation told Us , “We have diligently investigated the situation and can confirm The Archewell Foundation remains fully compliant and in good standing. Due payments were made promptly and in accordance with the IRS’s processes and procedures. Furthermore, all necessary paperwork had been filed by the Foundation without error or wrongdoing.”

Charges against world’s top golfer scottie scheffler dropped after arrest outside pga championship.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Criminal charges against Scottie Scheffler have been dismissed, ending a legal saga that began with images of the world’s top golfer being arrested and handcuffed in Louisville during the PGA Championship.

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell asked a judge Wednesday afternoon to drop the four charges against Scheffler, who was not required to be in the courtroom. The prosecutor said Scheffler’s explanation that he had a misunderstanding with police directing traffic was “corroborated by the evidence.”

“Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler,” O’Connell said during the short hearing.

Scheffler said in an Instagram post Wednesday that his May 17 arrest and jailing was an “unfortunate misunderstanding” during a “chaotic situation.”

“I wish to put this incident behind me, and I hope (the officer) will do the same. Police officers have a difficult job and I hold them in high regard,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler had been charged with a felony for assaulting a police officer with his vehicle, along with three misdemeanors. The arresting officer, Detective Bryan Gillis, was outside the gate of Valhalla Golf Course directing traffic after a pedestrian death when he encountered Scheffler.

Video of Scheffler in handcuffs being escorted by officers quickly spread on the internet, followed by a mug shot of Scheffler in an orange jumpsuit from Louisville’s jail.

O’Connell said Wednesday that his office thoroughly reviewed evidence in the case before deciding to dismiss charges.

“The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr. Scheffler,” O’Connell said. “However, Mr. Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses.”

Scheffler was not aware there had been a pedestrian death, and several PGA-marked vehicles like Scheffler’s were able to enter the course without a problem, O’Connell said. But a passenger bus attempting to enter was halted and told to turn around. Gillis was on the scene stopping vehicles so the bus would have room to pivot, and Scheffler’s car was among the first to reach the point where Gillis was stopping traffic, O’Connell said.

Gillis said in a police report that Scheffler then “refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging” Gillis to the ground. Gillis said his uniform pants were damaged in the fall and he was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

A surveillance video released by Louisville police last week showed Gillis pursuing Scheffler’s vehicle on foot and stopping him from entering the course. Scheffler is later pulled from the car and cuffed. But the video did not show Gillis’ first contact with Scheffler, authorities said.

Gillis has been disciplined for not activating his body-worn camera during the arrest. In a report on that failure, Gillis wrote that Scheffler had “demanded to be let in” the golf course.

The famous golfer spent a brief stint in a jail cell, then returned to the course for the second round. He finished the tournament tied for eighth place.

Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, said eyewitness accounts confirmed that the officer was not dragged by his client’s car.

“The more evidence that comes out, the more it shows that Scottie was a victim here. And I think everybody sees something like this happen and realizes they’re one wrong turn … from going to jail themselves,” he said after the hearing.

Romines also said there were grounds for a civil lawsuit against Louisville police but Scheffler is not interested in pursuing litigation.

“Scottie Scheffler doesn’t want the taxpayers of Louisville to have to pay him a dime,” he said.

O’Connell and Romines also addressed the death of the pedestrian, a 69-year-old tournament volunteer named John Mills.

“The events that led us here today began with a tragedy … and my hope is more attention will soon be paid to Mr. Mills and his life,” O’Connell said.

Romines said he has spoken to Mills’ family to extend condolences from Scheffler.

“These kind of tournaments can’t go on without people like John Mills working out there,” Romines said.

We began our journey at 4:00 am with a pick-up from our hotel in Cusco. We drive for about an hour and a half to the small town of Ollantaytambo, where we board the Expedition train to Km 104, the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu entrance. The hike from Km 104 to Machu Picchu is about 16km (10 miles) and takes around 7 hours. It is a relatively easy hike but can be challenging at times due to the altitude. Along the way, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Andes mountains and the lush vegetation of the Amazon rainforest. When you finally reach Machu Picchu, you will be able to explore this world-famous Inca site at your own pace. You will also want to take many photos to remember this incredible experience!

On Day 2, you'll want to beat the crowds and get an early start to Machu Picchu. You can either take a bus or hike up to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu.

You will explore Machu Picchu in a guided tour of about 2-3 hours, visiting the most important places such as the temples, palaces, and famous viewpoints. You will also have time to participate in optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain . 

After Machu Picchu, you will return to Aguas Calientes by bus, have lunch and return on the Vistadome Panoramic Trains.
