Unlike Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City , Hoi An is small and provincial in feel. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides a fascinating glimpse into what port life was like in 18th-century Vietnam.

Hoi An is a city in Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was one of the most heavily-frequented trading ports in Southeast Asia.

During that time, many foreign merchants lived in Hoi An, mostly Chinese and Japanese then later Europeans, creating a unique fusion of cultures that can’t be seen anywhere else in Vietnam. The name Hoi An translates to “peaceful meeting place”.

Hoi An’s prominence as a trading port fell sharply at the end of the 18th century. This was due in part to the silting up of the Thu Bon River as well as the rise of nearby Da Nang as the new center of trade in Central Vietnam. Fading into a forgotten backwater, Hoi An has been left largely untouched by the changes to Vietnam over the next 200 years.

Today, Hoi An is a well-preserved community of merchant houses, temples, and ancient tea warehouses that harken back to its days of prominence as a trading port.

Unlike Northern Vietnam which sees climate changes akin to the four seasons, Hoi An truly has just two seasons – dry (Feb-Aug) and wet (Sept-Jan). Weather-wise, the best time to visit Hoi An is from February till April .

I’ve been to Hoi An twice – the first time in late April and the second in early September. The weather was great on both trips. I was expecting it to be rainy in September but luckily for me, it wasn’t. Like any Southeast Asian city, it would get hot during the day but it wasn’t intolerable.

DRY SEASON: Hoi An’s dry season is from February to August. It’s hottest from June till August when temperatures often reach 35°C (95°F). February to April is the driest time of the year and the best months to visit Hoi An. Humidity is low and temperatures are relatively mild.

WET SEASON: The rainy season in Hoi An is from September until January. Heavy showers are frequent which may come with typhoons and flooding, especially in October and November. These aren’t the best months to visit Hoi An.

Another factor to consider when planning a trip to Hoi An is the Tet holiday or Vietnamese New Year celebration. This happens sometime between the end of January and early February. Many restaurants and shops will be closed during this time and hotel rates will be at their highest.

TRAVELING TO HOI AN

You can get to Hoi An by plane, bus, or train. On our first trip, we flew from Hanoi to Da Nang International Airport (DAD) then arranged for a private transfer to take us to our hotel in Hoi An. On my second, I took a sleeper bus directly into Hoi An from Hue.

I’ll describe each method in more detail below but you can go to Bookaway to check for transportation options to Hoi An from wherever you are.

If you’re flying into Da Nang, then you’ll need to arrange for an airport transfer into Hoi An. Da Nang Airport is about 30 km away so it’ll take about 45 minutes to get there by car.

PRIVATE TRANSFER: This is the easiest and fastest way to get to Hoi An from Da Nang Airport. We arranged for a private transfer through our hotel but you can also book it through Bookaway .

TAXI: Based on what I’ve read, it’ll cost you at least VND 350,000 to get to Hoi An from Da Nang Airport via taxi. Going by taxi is fine, but you’ll probably pay less if you arrange for a private transfer.

SHUTTLE: A cheaper alternative would be to take a shared shuttle bus transfer from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An. It costs about VND 130,000 each way and you can book it in advance through Bookaway .

Sleeper buses in Vietnam are awesome. The seats are reclined to such a degree that you’re lying almost flat. The more luxurious sleeper buses even have individual TVs and curtains for privacy. They’re my preferred means of transport for shorter distances in Vietnam.

Pictured below is the sleeper bus I took from Hue to Hoi An. Unlike planes and trains that can only take you as far as Da Nang, buses can take you directly into Hoi An. Not only is it the most comfortable option, but it’s also the most convenient.

Taking a bus to Hoi An may or may not be feasible depending on where you are in Vietnam, so you can check for available routes on Bookaway .

I haven’t taken a train in Vietnam but I’ve read that they generally aren’t as comfortable as buses. However, they’re available for long distances and are cheaper than flights so they may be a viable option if you aren’t in a rush.

You can check for available train routes to Da Nang Railway Station on Bookaway . From there, you can take a taxi or arrange for a private transfer to Hoi An through your hotel. It should cost about the same as an airport transfer.

WHERE TO EXCHANGE CURRENCY

The unit of currency in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND) .

Banks and gold/jewelry shops generally give the best exchange rates in Vietnam. We didn’t need to exchange currency in Hoi An but I read that the gold/jewelry shops around Hoi An Central Market give favorable rates. Just shop around and look for the best rate.

You can exchange currency at hotels and some restaurants too, but the rates aren’t as favorable. The same goes for the airport. If you’ll be arriving at Da Nang International Airport and need to exchange currency, then change a small amount there, just enough to get you to your hotel, and change the rest at a gold shop near the Central Market.

A better option perhaps would be to withdraw VND from an ATM. I find myself doing this more often these days. Rates are comparable and I don’t have to bring too much foreign currency with me. Just make sure to advise your bank that you plan on using your ATM card overseas so you don’t run into any issues. In my experience, my ATM card works in some machines but not in others.

NOTE: Some ATMs may ask if you’d like to proceed “with or without conversion”. Always proceed WITHOUT conversion so your local bank does the conversion. Otherwise, the foreign bank operating the ATM will perform the conversion, usually at terrible rates. According to this article, the difference in rates can be as high as 10% .

BEST AREAS TO STAY IN HOI AN

If it’s your first trip to Hoi An, then the Ancient Town is the best place for you to stay. It’s right at the heart of the tourist area and puts you closest to many of Hoi An’s top attractions and restaurants.

HOI AN ANCIENT TOWN

The Ancient Town is the historic and cultural heart of Hoi An. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and where you’ll find the city’s well-preserved complex of heritage houses and pagodas.

If you stay in the Ancient Town, then you probably won’t need to do much walking since most of the city’s top attractions are located here. It’s home to plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants as well.

As convenient as the Ancient Town is, it’s the most touristy part of Hoi An so expect it to be crowded, especially in the evenings when the lanterns are lit up. You can search for accommodations in the Ancient Town on Booking.com .

Listed below are some of the top-rated hotels in Hoi An Ancient Town.

I’m not an expert on Hoi An’s administrative divisions but Minh An appears to consist of a small section of the Ancient Town and the eastern half of An Hoi, the small island across the Bridge of Lights.

Whatever the boundaries may be, Minh An is where you’ll find Hoi An Night Market and a good number of hotel options. This is as convenient an area to stay in Hoi An as the Ancient Town. You can search for accommodations in Minh An on Booking.com or Agoda .

Looking at a map, Cam Pho is comprised of the western half of An Hoi Island and the area directly west and north of the Ancient Town. It’s described as a good place to stay for budget travelers with its wide range of cheaper accommodations.

I stayed on the An Hoi part of Cam Pho on my most recent trip to Hoi An. It doesn’t have as many commercial establishments but it’s much quieter than the Minh An half of the island.

I stayed at Riverlife Homestay which is a clean and comfortable boutique inn run by a lovely Vietnamese family. They have a roofdeck offering great views of the Thu Bon River.

Cam Chau is where we stayed on our first trip to Hoi An. It refers to the quieter, more residential area between the Ancient Town and the beach. If you’d prefer a more authentic experience in Hoi An, then Cam Chau is a good place to stay.

We stayed at Ngan Phu Villa which is a lovely bed and breakfast with big rooms and a swimming pool in a relaxed garden setting. We had free use of the hotel’s bicycles which was helpful because it’s located a bit far from the Ancient Town, about 20 minutes away on foot.

I haven’t explored this area but Cam Thanh is described as an ideal place to stay for people looking for a more rural experience in Hoi An. It may be a bit far from the heart of town but if that’s what you want, then Cam Thanh sounds like a good place to be.

Based on what I’ve read, many expat families live in Cam Thanh. It’s home to waterways and rice paddies and a good number of authentic local eateries, cafes, and temples. You can search for accommodations in Cam Thanh on Booking.com or Agoda .

THINGS TO DO IN HOI AN

1. explore hoi an ancient town.

Hoi An Ancient Town is stunning. It’s beautiful during the day with its rows of preserved shophouses and dangling paper lanterns. But at night, when the lanterns are illuminated and the streets come alive with people, it feels almost like a dream.

It isn’t enclosed but you technically have to pay VND 150,000 to enter the Ancient Town area. It’s like an archaeological fee that includes 5 passes to any of the 22 sightseeing attractions in town like the Japanese Bridge and Phuoc Kien Assembly Hall.

There’s lots to see and do in the Ancient Town so you should dedicate at least half a day to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can refer to my article on Hoi An Ancient Town for more pictures and information.

It’s easy enough to explore the Ancient Town on your own but if you’d like to go on a guided tour, then you can book one on Klook or Get Your Guide .

2. Take a Cooking Class

Taking a cooking class is one of the best things you can do in Hoi An. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to learn about Vietnamese cuisine.

Cooking classes are popular in Hoi An so you’ll find many hotels and restaurants offering them throughout the city. We booked an excellent class at Thuan Tinh Island Cooking School where we learned to make classic Vietnamese dishes like goi cuon, pho, and banh xeo.

3. Visit Hoi An Central Market

No matter where you are, visiting a market is always fun. It gives you a glimpse into what everyday life is like for the locals.

Located in the Ancient Town, Hoi An Central Market is a typical Southeast Asian market selling different types of meat, seafood, noodles, spices, and fresh produce.

It stays open till late afternoon but it’s best experienced early in the morning when it’s most active. Wake up early enough and you may catch the bartering of fish that typically starts at around 7AM.

If you’re looking for a cheap place to have lunch, inside the market are several stalls selling different types of cooked Vietnamese food.

Operating Hours: 5AM-4PM, daily

4. Ride a Boat

You’ll find plenty of tourists cruising the Thu Bon River on these wooden canoes around sunset and early in the evening. I haven’t done it but it must be a great way of experiencing the Ancient Town when it’s illuminated at night.

To make it even more magical, hundreds of small paper lanterns with candles are released into the Thu Bon every evening to create a river of drifting lights. It looks amazing from the shore so I can only imagine how cool it must look from a canoe.

I believe it costs around VND 100,000 per hour to go on a Thu Bon River cruise, but I’m not sure.

As beautiful as it looks, a Thu Bon River evening cruise is very touristy. If you’d prefer to do something more local, then you may want to ride one of these basket boats instead.

These round basket boats have been in use since French times and have become an iconic symbol of Vietnam. It’s definitely a more unique way of experiencing the waterways of Hoi An. You can book a basket boat tour on Klook or Get Your Guide .

5. Visit Tra Que Vegetable Village

I only learned about Tra Que Village after my most recent trip to Hoi An which is a shame because I would have loved to visit this place.

Tra Que Village is a 40-hectare island known for growing vegetables without the use of pesticides, GMOs, or any harsh chemicals. They don’t even use manure as a fertilizer.

Instead, they grow their vegetables using an all-natural algae found exclusively in the village’s lagoon. It results in produce that’s described as being the freshest and cleanest in Hoi An.

Tra Que Village is located about 3.5 km north of the Ancient Town so it’s easy to get there on your own by bicycle or on foot. There are about ten restaurants in the village, most of which offer cooking classes. If you’d prefer to go on a guided tour, then you can book one through Get Your Guide .

6. Explore the Night Market

After marveling at the river of paper lanterns from the Bridge of Lights, you may want to cross over to An Hoi Island and explore Hoi An Night Market. It’s a typical Asian night market that opens from 4:30 till 10PM every evening.

The night market area in Minh An is one of the liveliest neighborhoods in Hoi An. It’s a fun atmosphere with plenty of stalls selling street food, drinks, and souvenirs. It’s a great place to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

7. Have a Suit or Dress Custom-Tailored in 24 Hours

One of the most popular things to do in Hoi An is to get a dress or suit custom-tailored. The tailoring tradition goes back many generations in Hoi An so you’ll find hundreds of tailor shops that can produce exact replicas of what you want in 24-48 hours.

I’ve read that not all tailors are honest so I suggest asking your hotel for recommendations. You can also refer to this TripAdvisor post on Hoi An tailors for guidance.

DAY TRIPS FROM HOI AN

1. my son sanctuary.

My Son Sanctuary is the most popular day trip you can make from Hoi An. Often referred to as a “mini Angkor Wat”, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built by the Cham people of Vietnam between the 4th and 14th centuries.

If you enjoy visiting temples and ancient ruins, then My Son Sanctuary makes for an interesting day trip from Hoi An. Check out my article on My Son Sanctuary for more pictures and information.

We booked a private tour through Simply Vietnam Travel but there are group tours you can book through Klook or Get Your Guide . This applies to all day tours in this section, but be sure you select a tour that starts from Hoi An and not Da Nang.

2. Golden Bridge

This unique pedestrian bridge made its rounds on social media not too long ago. It features a pair of giant stone hands that seemingly hold up a 150-meter-long (492 ft) footbridge at the top of Ba Na Hills.

The Golden Bridge is the newest addition to the Sun World Ba Na Hills amusement park , which is located about 29 km (18 miles) west of Da Nang. The bridge is just one of many attractions at the park so you could conceivably spend the entire day there.

The easiest way to get there is by arranging for private round trip transfers or booking a tour from Hoi An. You can do so on Get Your Guide .

3. Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains are a cluster of five limestone and marble hills in Da Nang. Named after the five elements, the hills are located in a coastal area renowned for stone-cutting and sculpture.

If you arrived in Hoi An via Da Nang Airport, then you probably noticed large marble statues on display along the coastal highway. From what I understand, these used to be carved from rock extracted from the Marble Mountains but not anymore. To preserve the mountains, the raw material is now sourced from quarries in Quang Nam.

The Marble Mountains are located about 20 km north of the Ancient Town, making them an easy day trip from Hoi An. Each hill has caves, tunnels, and Buddhist sanctuaries you can explore.

You can rent a motorbike and explore the Marble Mountains on your own or you can book a guided tour from Hoi An through Klook or Get Your Guide .

4. Cham Islands

The Cham Islands are a cluster of eight small islands about 9 nautical miles (16.7 km) off the coast of Hoi An. It’s a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve offering plenty of opportunities for watersports, snorkeling, scuba diving, or just laying on the beach.

The Cham Islands are best visited from March till September when the weather is sunny and water conditions are favorable. For scuba diving and snorkeling, June till August is ideal.

The Cham Islands are accessible by public ferry or speedboat from Cua Dai Pier in Cam An, but the easier and more popular option may be to book an organized day trip through Klook or Get Your Guide .

5. Bach Ma National Park

Bach Ma National Park is a protected area about 2.5 hrs north of Hoi An. It’s a former French-era hill station covering an area of about 220 sq km.

If you’re staying long enough in Hoi An and would like to do a day of trekking, then Bach Ma is the place to do it. It’s home to a lush jungle with lakes, waterfalls, and an abundance of plant and animal life.

Less than 3 hours north of Hoi An is the imperial city of Hue . It served as the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty and Vietnam’s capital from 1802–1945.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Hue which make it a worthwhile day trip from Hoi An, in spite of the distance. Though if you have more time in Vietnam, then Hue should be its own trip. Check out our Hue travel guide for more information.

WHERE TO EAT IN HOI AN

While our Vietnamese food guide focuses on the best dishes to have in Vietnam, our Hoi An food guide lists some of the best restaurants in Hoi An . If you’d like to try excellent examples of dishes like cao lau, banh mi, and com ga in Hoi An, then this list will be useful to you.

Twenty may be too many for most travelers so I’ve listed our five favorites below. But be sure to click through to the full Hoi An food guide for more pictures and information.

1. Madam Khanh – The Banh My Queen

Ask any local and most will tell you that there are only two contenders for the bast banh mi in Hoi An. The first was recommended by the late great Anthony Bourdain on an episode of No Reservations, while the second is Madam Khanh – The Banh My Queen.

Both places were fantastic and better than any banh mi I’ve had anywhere in Vietnam, but I may have to give the slight nod to the Banh My Queen. She douses her banh mi in a secret sauce that sets it apart from the rest.

2. Long Com Ga

Together with banh mi and cao lau, com ga constitutes the holy trinity of Hoi An food. Originally from Hainan, it’s basically the Vietnamese version of Hainanese chicken rice.

I had com ga several times in Hoi An. All were terrific but for me, Long Com Ga in the Ancient Town was the best. It had the best balance of flavor and texture, not to mention the most offal which they heap on top of the rice and in the soup.

3. Morning Glory Restaurant

Morning Glory Restaurant is owned by Ms. Trinh Diem Vy, a celebrity chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author. Her pioneering cooking course was the impetus that launched all Hoi An cooking schools.

Morning Glory Restaurant is a lovely restaurant located in the heart of the Ancient Town. They have an extensive menu offering many local favorites like cao lau, mi quang, and banh xeo.

Considering the restaurant’s ambiance and prime location, their prices are higher than the more humble eateries on our list, but it’s worth it. Pictured below is their delicious version of cao lau, one of the best I’ve had in Hoi An.

Cao lau is a rice noodle dish topped with cha siu pork, fresh herbs, bean sprouts, rice crackers, and deep-fried pork skin. It’s an important Hoi An regional dish and one of the best things you can have in the city.

4. White Rose Restaurant

White Rose is a Hoi An institution. They’re famous for a dish called White Rose dumplings or banh bao banh vac. In fact, it’s just one of two items they serve on their menu, the other being fried wontons which are also known as “Hoi An pizza”.

These flower-shaped dumplings are made with translucent white dough filled with spiced minced shrimp or pork. They’re topped with crispy fried shallots and served with a special dipping sauce made with shrimp broth, chilies, lemon, and sugar.

You’ll find many restaurants and street food vendors selling White Rose dumplings in Hoi An. The recipe is a well-guarded family secret so most of the dumplings you see in town are supplied by White Rose Restaurant. I suggest trying them at the source.

5. Ong Hai (Mr. Hai Restaurant)

Ong Hai is a local favorite that specializes in cao lau and mi quang (pictured below). Mi quang is an equally popular rice noodle dish that originated in Da Nang .

Unlike cao lau that’s made with hardly any broth, mi quang is a slightly soupier dish made with a concentrated broth and a wider type of rice noodle. It’s topped with pork, shrimp, or chicken and a host of other ingredients like hard-boiled egg, peanuts, rice cracker, and fresh herbs.

We had mi quang as often as cao lau in Hoi An and Ong Hai’s version was one of our favorites.

WHICH CAFES TO VISIT IN HOI AN

Vietnam is the second largest producer of coffee in the world. From Hanoi’s ca phe trung to Hue’s ca phe muoi to Ho Chi Minh City’s cafe apartments , you’ll find interesting cafes and unique coffee creations throughout the country.

Like I did in every city, I sought out as many coffeehouses as I could to come up with this list of the best cafes in Hoi An .

Hoi An had some of the cutest cafes I visited in Vietnam but these three were among the most interesting. Be sure to click through to the full Hoi An coffee guide for more pictures and information.

1. Phin Coffee (Original)

Many locals feel that Phin Coffee makes the best coffee in Hoi An. They have knowledgeable baristas who’ll happily demonstrate the coffee making process for you.

I went to two Phin Coffee outlets and had two types of coffee – phin coffee and vot coffee. Phin coffee (pictured below) makes use of a traditional phin filter while vot coffee refers to a dying method of filtering coffee using a cloth strainer.

I preferred their phin coffee but vot coffee isn’t as common so I suggest trying both. In fact, this was the only place I had come across vot coffee anywhere in Vietnam.

2. The Espresso Station

Among all the cafes I visited in Hoi An, The Espresso Station had by far the most interesting coffee creations.

This cup of coffee as black as night is what they call a “dark soul latte”. Made with espresso blended with milk and activated charcoal, it’s as delicious as it is dark.

I didn’t get to visit the Espresso Station a second time but on our next visit, I’m going for the “coffee ice cubes” which are frozen coffee cubes topped with cocoa powder and served with a side of warm milk.

3. Reaching Out Tea House

The Espresso Station may have the most interesting coffee creations, but Reaching Out Tea House has the most interesting concept. At Reaching Out, you’re encouraged to enjoy your coffee or tea in silence.

Reaching Out Tea House is managed by the speech and hearing impaired. You’re urged to communicate with your servers using handwritten notes or by presenting blocks with pre-written messages like “Bill”, “Ice”, or “Thank you”. It’s an interesting place that serves good coffee.

They have three coffee blends and four types of tea to choose from, but I suggest getting the coffee or tea sets which include smaller servings of every kind.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN HOI AN

Hoi An is a walking town. It’s compact enough that you can easily get around on foot or on a bicycle. If you’re staying near the Ancient Town, then you may not need one but getting a bicycle would be a good idea if you’re staying in areas like Cam Chau or Cam Thanh.

If your hotel doesn’t provide bicycles, then there are plenty of bike and motorcycle rental shops around town. I did some research and it typically costs about USD 1 a day to rent a bike and USD 5 to rent a motorcycle.

Bicycles are fine but if you’re planning on traveling farther to places like the Marble Mountains, Da Nang, or My Son Sanctuary, then a motorcycle would be better.

I never had to use it in Hoi An but I’ve used Grab in other cities in Vietnam like Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City , so I’m assuming it’s available in Hoi As as well.

HOW MANY DAYS TO STAY / HOI AN ITINERARY

Hoi An isn’t that big so you won’t need a lot of time to see its top attractions. However, it isn’t the type of destination you’ll want to just breeze through. Hoi An is best enjoyed at a snail’s pace so if you can stay for 4-5 days, then that would be ideal.

If you don’t have as much time to spare, then 2-3 days should be enough. Here’s a 3D/3N sample itinerary to help you plan your trip.

HOI AN TRAVEL TIPS

1. plan your trip with sygic travel.

2. Rent a Pocket Wifi Device

Do you ever travel without packing your toothbrush? Never right? That’s how I feel about pocket wifi devices. It’s become such a necessity these days that we never go anywhere now without renting a pocket wifi device first.

You can rent a 4G pocket wifi device through Klook, but you’ll need to pick it up in either Hanoi or Saigon. We prefer pocket wifi devices because we find them easier, but a cheaper alternative is to get a sim card. You can purchase a sim card through Klook then pick it up at Da Nang International Airport. Another option is to get an eSIM .

3. Check for Hoi An Travel Deals

There are many travel e-commerce websites but the ones I use the most are Klook and Get Your Guide. Follow these links for a complete list of Hoi An deals on Klook and Get Your Guide . You’ll often find interesting activities that you wouldn’t normally think of yourself so it’s always worth a look.

4. Get Travel Insurance

We get travel insurance more often now but there was a time when we didn’t get it at all. It seemed like an unnecessary expense.

The way I see it, if you plan on doing physical activities while on a trip, then you should definitely get travel insurance. But if all you’ll be doing is going to a country like Singapore and traveleating for a few days, then you may not need it as much.

When we do feel the need for insurance, we get it from SafetyWing or Heymondo. They’re both popular travel insurance providers used by many long-term travelers. Follow the links to get a free quote from SafetyWing or Heymondo . Get 5% off on Heymondo if you pick up a policy using our link.

5. Pay Only in VND

Some hotels, restaurants, and shops may accept payment in USD, but you should always pay in VND. If something is priced in VND, then you should definitely pay for it in VND because using any other currency will lead to terrible exchange rates. As advised, the best place to get VND in Hoi An is at gold/jewelry shops and banks, or from ATMs.

6. Don’t Be Confused by the Currency

I don’t think I’ve ever been as careful paying for things than I was in Vietnam. Their currency is so confusing! Having all the zeros is confusing enough, but some banknotes even look the same. For example, VND 100,000 bills have a similar green hue as VND 10,000 notes.

Based on what I’ve seen and heard, tourists overpaying for things in Vietnam isn’t uncommon. In fact, it happened to a woman who was on this Hoa Lu and Tam Coc tour with us in Hanoi. She mistakenly gave the vendor a VND 200,000 note when she meant to give her a similarly red VND 50,000 bill.

Be careful when paying for things with cash in Vietnam because chances are, vendors won’t correct you if you make a mistake.

7. Bring the Right Power Adapter

Vietnam has Type A, Type C, or Type F electrical outlets so be sure to bring the right power adapters for your devices. Electrical voltage is 220V and the standard frequency is 50Hz.

So many great eats in this city -- loved how unique and local so many of the dishes were.

Ho Chi Minh To Hoi An: Complete Transportation Guide

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An is approximately 846 kilometres (526 miles) to 940 kilometres (594 miles) depending on which route you take. To most travellers’ surprise, the shortest route is not the fastest!

Whether travelling by motorbike, bus, train or plane, we’ve got you covered with our guide on how to get from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An (and vice versa). Our guide will help you roll into Hoi An with ease and a smile.

Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An Travel

A lot of factors come into play when trying to get from point A to point B: transportation method, personal comfort, privacy preferences, budget, and time, to name a few. Keep in mind that the journey is expected to take around 20 hours straight through by land, and, no matter what method of transportation you choose, you will have to enter and exit Hoi An from Da Nang (read more on how to get to Hoi An from Da Nang in our article here ).

Firstly, you will need to select a mode of transport. We’ve listed them in order from cheapest to most expensive, along with the duration of the ride straight through to Hoi An:

• Bus (20 hours 20 minutes, plus 1-hour bus ride to Da Nang)
• Train (17 hours, plus 1-hour bus ride to Da Nang)
• Plane (1 hour 20 minutes, plus 1-hour bus ride to Da Nang)
• Motorbike (17-18 hours; we don’t advise you ride directly there. Instead, allow for at least two to three overnight stops)

Now that you’ve chosen your mode of transport, it’s time to either book a ticket or plan a multi-stop trip and enjoy the ride. Hidden recommends using 12GoAsia for reliable timetables and ticket booking. The site lists any available options for buses and planes on any given date and has proven to be most reputable for company ratings. Be sure to search for rides to Da Nang rather than Hoi An, or the search may show zero results.

Bus from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An

Catching the bus from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An (drop-off at the bus station in Da Nang) is perhaps the easiest mode of transportation and definitely the cheapest. A straight-through bus will cost around 500,000 VND (21.50 USD) and can be made overnight or through the day. All buses from Ho Chi Minh to Da Nang will depart from Mien Dong station, located North of District 1at 292 Dinh Bo Linh, Phuong 26 , in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.

Depending on where you’re staying you may be able to request a pickup from your accommodation by one of the bus station’s shuttle cars. A taxi or Grab will also deliver you to the station for varying prices depending on your location and the time of day.

Our Sleeper Bus Can The Best Transporter For Your Journey

Due to the length of the journey, this is a sleeper bus, it has three rows of “bunk beds,” or reclining seats. The good news is you’ll have your own bed and be able to recline, but the bad news is that these seats are generally uncomfortable over long periods of time. A blanket and pillow are provided, as well as a water bottle. There are no toilets on the bus, but consider the discomfort of lingering odours before you start groaning! The bus makes frequent stops and it’s possible to request a stop if it’s urgent.

Hidden recommends the overnight bus option to travellers who find it difficult to entertain themselves in a vehicle for long hours and the day bus option to travellers who fear missing out on the scenery while travelling in the dark.

Hidden Hint: Be prepared to put the majority of your belongings under the bus. Riders have the option to bring their bag on the bus, but there are no overhead compartments or place to put your bag other than your lap.

Upon arrival in Da Nang bus station ( 201 Ton Duc Thang ), travellers can catch a bus to Hoi An from the same bus station for 20,000 VND (1 USD), which takes about 45 minutes to one hour depending on passenger pick up. If you dread getting on a back-to-back bus, then note that the Da Nang bus station is located close to the heart of the city and is also worth exploring.

Train from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An

The train can be a more comfortable alternative if you’re planning on travelling the long distance straight through. It is faster but more expensive. The Saigon Train Station is located to the west of District 1 at 1 Nguyen Thong  but is relatively close (around five kilometres). Download the Grab app or ask the front desk at your accommodation to book a taxi.

When booking a train ticket, it’s important to be clear on your seating options to ensure a comfortable ride. Options include a soft seat, hard sleeper, and soft sleeper, with prices increasing in respective order. Soft seat is as it implies. It does not recline, but it is cushiony. The soft seats are lined along the train car, similar to an aeroplane with two seats on each side of the aisle. Prices are generally around 1,000,000 VND (44 USD) but are subject to change.

Hard sleeper

Aside from being, well, hard , they are stacked in threes, making a total of six beds in a single cabin. Great if you are travelling in a big group and can secure the whole cabin to yourselves. Also great if you prefer less fluff in your mattress. Prices are generally around 980,000 to 1,240,000 VND (49 to 62 USD) depending on the time of the train and whether you choose to be on the top, middle, or bottom bunk.

Soft sleepers

As the name suggests, these are said to be softer  and are limited to four beds per cabin and are the most expensive of the options. Prices are generally around 67 USD depending on the time of the day the train departs Ho Chi Minh.

Similar to the bus, the train also departs in the morning and at night, giving you the option of Vietnamese scenery or proper sleeping. This depends on your travel preferences, but take note of the time your train arrives in Da Nang. The morning trains arrive late at night, while the night trains will arrive mid-day.

Once you arrive at Da Nang’s train station, 791 Hai Phong , it’s just a matter of getting to Hoi An. The bus station is a 10-minute walk away and the bus takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour to get to Hoi An.  

NB: The bus only runs from 5:30 AM to 5:30 PM, so if you arrive late at night, then you may want to book a hotel or hostel for the night in Da Nang and let them know in advance that you will arrive late. You can also book a private shuttle or taxi, but these should both be done in advance either through the train company, a taxi company or your hotel.

Flying from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An

Travelling by plane is the quick, no-hassle option for travellers wanting to get from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An. The flight time is only 1 hour and 20 mins. Prices will vary depending on how far in advance you book them, the airline, the day of the week and the season (March through August is prime tourist season).

12GoAsia does a great job putting all flight options in one list so travellers can browse price options and times easily. Make sure to search Ho Chi Minh to Da Nang, as that is the closest airport to Hoi An. Prices range between 650,000 VND (32.30 USD) and 3,000,000 VND (150 USD) so try a few variations to get the best fare.  

Hidden Hint : Flights tend to be cheaper if you plan to fly out on a Tuesday or Wednesday and book on a weekday.

Easy To Reach

The airport in Ho Chi Minh is easy and cheap to reach by Grab or taxi (approximately 100,000 VND from District 1) or simply ask your hotel or hostel to book a shuttle for you. Lines and waiting times are completely dependent on the flight time and season, but the general rule of thumb is to arrive two hours before the plane begins boarding.

This will ensure time to check bags, print tickets, and maybe grab a bite to eat after waiting in those unpredictable airport lines. Also, take into consideration rush hour when booking a flight, the traffic in Ho Chi Minh can turn your quick, hassle-free flight into a stressful race against the clock.

Motorbike from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An

For adventure seekers with a less-restrictive budget and timeline, we’d highly recommend a motorbike ride from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An. A few years ago, this option wouldn’t have been possible without purchasing a motorbike, dealing with the mechanical issues and then trying to sell the bike at the end of the trip. Now, thanks to hire companies like Tigit and Style Motorbikes , it is possible to rent a bike for a one-way trip from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An.

The rental company made the process extremely easy for travellers: simply select a bike, select a payment plan, and select point A and point B. Some bikes are cheaper in price than others, but they all come with insurance plans, luggage racks and helmets. Prices range from 5,000,000 VND (250 USD) for one month or 200,000 VND (10 USD) per day (minimum of four days) to 15,000,000 VND (750 USD) for one month or 700,000 VND (35 USD) per day. NB: This does not include the costs of gas.

With the freedom of a bike, you get to choose a route with your own desired destinations and you won’t be held to other peoples’ schedules. Although it’s possible to do the ride directly, you would have to be mad to attempt the 84 kilometresrs in one day.

Hidden recommends taking two or three days (at least) to enjoy some other Vietnamese cities. Bikers can choose a coastal route, stopping in Mui Ne , Nha Trang and Qui Nhon; an inland route through mountains, stopping in Da Lat and maybe heading west to Buon Ma Thuot; or do a zig-zagging mixture of the two.

Hidden’s Thoughts:

Being one of the most-visited SE Asian countries, Vietnam has gradually become easier and more affordable to manoeuvre around. After exploring all the options, we think that if you’ve got some time up your sleeve and are confident on a motorbike, then it’s a great road trip from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An—just allow for a few nights along the way to break up the long journey.

A bus is undoubtedly the best budget option, so you could try the novel approach of a sleeper train for the experience—but it could be the same price as a cheap flight. So, if you need to just get here, then grab a plane—you’ll be here in under one and a half hours. All that’s left to do now is determine the best route for you and your travel companion(s) and enjoy the ride.

1. Getting to Hoi An from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City

To reach Hoi An from either of the two major cities, you will first have to land in Da Nang, which is located 30 km away from Hoi An, as there is no airport in the ancient town. You can book flights with airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietravel Airlines, and Vietjet Air, which operate routes from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang.

Another way to get to Da Nang from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is by train, with ticket prices ranging from $20 to $50 (470,000 to 1,200,000 VND). You have several options for train carriages, including 4-bed rooms and clean and comfortable V.I.P 2-bed rooms. The travel time varies from 14 to 20 hours, depending on the type of train you choose. If you have time and want to explore the country on the move, taking the train is a great option. You can book train tickets on the official website of the Vietnam Railway Corporation.

Buses are also an option for getting to Da Nang from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, with ticket prices ranging from $20 to $30 (470,000 to 700,000 VND). However, keep in mind that this mode of travel can be tiring and take a long time. Some recommended bus companies are Futabus, Phuc Thuan Thao Bus, and Quoc Hung Bus.

2. Getting to Hoi An from Da Nang

As soon as you arrive in Da Nang, there is a wide range of options to get to Hoi An.

Travel by bus

Bus number 1 from Da Nang can take you directly to the Hoi An Bus Station. You can refer to the bus route below to find the nearest bus stop.

• Advantages: inexpensive
• Disadvantages: long travel time (70-80 minutes), often crowded with limited space for luggage
• Cost: 30,000 VND ($1.25)
• Timing: buses run every 20 minutes from 5:30 AM to 6 PM
• Route: Da Nang Central Bus Station to Ton Duc Thang, Dien Bien Phu, Ha Huy Tap, Ha Khe, Nguyen Tat Thanh, Ong Ich Khiem, Le Duan, Chi Lang, Hung Vuong, Tran Phu, Trung Nu Vuong, Nui Thanh, Duy Tan, Tran Thi Ly Bridge, Ngu Hanh Son (The Marble Mountains), Le Van Hien, Tran Dai Nghia, and finally Hoi An Bus Station.

Travel by taxi

Travelers can book a taxi on arrival in Da Nang City or the airport to go directly to Hoi An.

• Advantages: convenient, comfortable, and flexible
• Disadvantages: slightly expensive
• Cost: 400,000 VND – 500,000 VND ($17 – $21) for a 4-seat car or 500,000 VND – 600,000 VND ($21 – $25) for a 7-seater
• Timing: unlimited, with a one-way trip taking about 45-55 minutes (depending on traffic conditions).

Travel by motorbike

Riding a motorcycle can be a great option if you’re comfortable with it. Note that a motorcycle license is required. The route from Da Nang to Hoi An is scenic with good road conditions.

• Advantages: flexible and interactive, with a great local experience of riding a motorbike
• Disadvantages: a motorcycle license is required
• Cost: 100,000 VND – 120,000 VND ($5) to rent a bike for one day
• Timing: a one-way trip takes about 45-55 minutes (the time may vary depending on the number of stops along the way, which you may make due to the stunning views along the route).

The distance between Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City is about 900 km, which is 15-21 hours, depending on traffic and mode of transport.

Hoi An does not have its own airport or railway station!  Therefore, most people arrive in Da Nang.

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An by Flight

There are no direct flights from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An, as Hoi An has no airport. The nearest airport is the Da Nang International Airport (airport code DAD). Da Nang is the perfect base for discovering popular places in Central Vietnam, such as Hoi An and Hue.

The quickest way to get to Hoi An is to fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang and then take a bus, taxi, or private transfer to the “Vietnam’s City of Lanterns”.

Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and VietJet Air operate several daily flights from Tan Son Nhat International Airport (airport code SGN) to Da Nang.

The flight takes just 1.5 hours, and plane tickets start from 45 USD  (without luggage) per person for one way.

Da Nang Airport to Hoi An

The distance between Da Nang Airport and Hoi An is approximately 30 km, and the journey takes only 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic.

A taxi cost from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An starts from 12 USD , depending on the number of passengers, time of day, etc. If you are not traveling alone, the price is affordable.

Before you get in the taxi, be sure to agree on a price with the driver.  The taxi drivers do not accept card payments, so you should bring local money!

Alternatively,  book a shuttle bus  from the airport to Hoi An, which costs 6 USD per person. The travel time is 45-90 minutes, depending on traffic and number of passengers.

Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An by Bus

One of the best ways to reach Hoi An is by sleeping bus. As these are direct buses, you don’t have to worry about additional transfers to get to Hoi An.

The travel time is approximately 21 hours, depending on traffic.

The A/C buses run from Pham Ngu Lao Bus Station to Hoi An Hanh Cafe. Buses depart only four times a day at 07:40, 07:45, 07:50, and 08:00. We recommend you arrive at the bus station at least 30 minutes before departure.

The sleeping bus to Hoi An is a great way to save money on your trip to Vietnam.  The bus tickets start from 32 USD per person.

Are you looking for the cheapest way to reach Hoi An? There are no trains between Ho Chi Minh and Hoi An. But from Ho Chi Minh, you can easily take a sleeper train to Da Nang and then take a bus or taxi to the Ancient Town.

Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) railway station is located in District 3, just 15-20 minutes by taxi from District 1, where most hotels are located.

The train journey   to Da Nang takes 18-19 hours.  As trains only run five times a day, tickets sell out quickly. Therefore, we recommend buying them days in advance online (especially in high season).

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An, Vietnam. (with Kids)

Ho Chi Minh is about 930 km from Hoi An by road and is the largest city in Vietnam. The fastest way to get from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An is of course, a direct flight (approx 1.5 hours) but there are cheaper and arguably nicer and more eco-friendly ways to make the journey.

Unfortunately flying to Hoi An from Ho Chi Minh isn’t direct, neither is the train, both terminate in Danang. We cover your transport options in this post. We’ve done this journey several times as a family with kids. We lived in Hoi An and flew into Saigon. Here are our findings on using public transport on the route as a family, for travellers or those taking a vacation in lovely Hoi An.

Ho Chi Minh was the old capital of South Vietnam during the American war. Back then it was called Saigon and the center of the city is still referred to as Saigon.

Hoi An is a small UNESCO-listed city located along a river just south of the DMZ and Da Nang, Vietnam’s third-largest city.

Few people visit Vietnam without visiting Hoi An and getting from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An can be done in a variety of ways. Some ways are better than others.

I made a little video on your options on this route (including the sleeper train) a bit further down the page and in this post we look at the best ways of getting from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An, by air, rail or road. You’ll see that the kids thought the train was great fun.

The kids have also taken Vietnamese semi-sleeper buses. The train is much more comfortable for families, save the buses for older kids, particularly if it’s an overnight journey. With toddlers and small kids, I’d fly.

There are three main options to take getting from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An. Bus, plane or train. They all have their good and bad points and with the journey distance of over 800+km, you want to pick the right one for your needs.

The plane and train both actually go to Da Nang which is 30 km north of Hoi An.

Buses will go direct to Hoi An saving you the trouble of catching a taxi or another long bus journey once you arrive.

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An by Air

This is the quickest way to get between the two cities but Hoi An does not have its own airport. You’ll need to fly from Ho Chi Minh to Danang.

Both Da Nang and HCM airports are very close to the centers of their respective cities so you won’t be losing too much time getting to airports.

Da Nang is an international airport so it benefits from great connections across numerous airlines. The two big ones being Vietnam Airlines which is one of my favourites, and Air Asia.

Unfortunately it is hard to just get down to Saigon and most flights actually head further afield to Thailand , Cambodia or Malaysia.

Vietnam Airlines is the only real choice for direct flights.

If you are booking a long way in advance you can get some really cheap deals. They may even be cheaper than the train.

Vietnam Airlines has special deals for under $30 USD if you’re not looking at the last minute.

From Danang Airport to Hoi An

The journey from Da Nang airport to Hoi An is about 30 minutes in a taxi from the airport.

The cost is approximately 400,000 to 500,000 Vnd depending on where in Hoi An you want to go.

You can book a private transfer in advance, from the airport to Hoi An, here . This site is also a very good place to book all of your Hoi An activities and tours, at a guaranteed price, with no haggling and hassle.

The public bus between Da Nang and Hoi An is currently not running, there is no yellow bus service. We checked this in April 2023 with a local resident.

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An by Train

The railway network is my favourite method of travelling in Vietnam and it doesn’t disappoint. The train station in Saigon is close to district 1 where most people will stay. A short taxi ride that will only cost a few dollars gets you to the train station. The train will take you to Danang, from where you can arrange transport to Hoi An, see paragraph below.

The journey is approximately 17 hours and there are numerous trains that run either during the day or overnight. Vietnam Railways is run by the Vietnamese government and they do a good job of running the trains. The company I use to buy our tickets online is  12goasia .  Booking this way allows you to pay for and print your tickets before you leave home.

There are 4 classes on the trains, hard seat, soft seat, hard berth, and soft berth. The hard seats are wooden benches and not recommended for a journey of this length. The soft seats are good but not private in any way. The hard berths have 6 bunks, 3 each side. The soft berth has 4 bunks in one room and is perfect for a family of 4 like ours. All have a/c except the hard seat carriages.

The price for a soft berth was between $65 USD and $70 last time we travelled, depending on which train you catch. All prices are quoted in USD but if you buy directly in Vietnam they will charge you in Dong, the Vietnamese currency. Online the price and charge will be USD.

The difference between hard and soft berth is only a few dollars and even between the soft seat and soft berth no more than $10. For the price, I’d recommend the soft berth so you have some privacy and electrical sockets and a/c while you travel.

There is a  private company that offers luxury carriages that are attached to the normal trains. These need to be booked separately and are only on certain trains. At the time of writing they only go from DaNang heading north to Hanoi or from Ho Chi Minh as far north as Nha Trang The cost for this service isn’t cheap but from all accounts is worth it if you have some spare money floating around. Time-wise it is connected to the Vietnamese rail trains so it will get you there at the same time as a normal train. Trains and service change constantly, please check current information for yourself.

Getting From Danang Train Station to Hoi An

You can (usually) catch a local bus, taxi, private transfer, Uber or Grab, the distance is approximately 25 Km. We have a full post on how to get from Danang to Hoi An here. Book you private transfer vehicle here, shared minibuses are cheaper and you can also book these (and all Hoi An tours) on this site.

Is there a bus between Danang and Hoi An in 2024? No, this bus is not operating according to our local sources, you must book a transfer or car.

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An by Bus

Anyone that has caught buses in Vietnam will have their fair share of stories to tell. While not so fast or aggressive in their driving as in neighbouring countries, buses in Vietnam rely on the horn and the road rules are more of a guide than a fixed law. The bus from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An is the only direct route, skipping Danang.

The buses can be amazing if you get the right one. Semi-flatbed luxury with two decks isn’t uncommon. Unfortunately, there are also some pretty ordinary buses so it pays to shop around and actually see what bus you are buying your ticket for.

I wouldn’t use these buses with small kids or pre-teens.

A lot of the travel agents in Vietnam sell tickets from north to south or vice versa but people have complained of the buses getting worse the further you go due to the swapping of tickets and companies. We did it this way 20 years ago but I’d recommend only booking as far as each stop today. You won’t save much more with a whole-way ticket and it gives you options when buying each ticket.

Pham Ngu Lao, in district 1 Saigon is where most of the tourist buses will leave from and arrive to. This is also where most of the tourist accommodation is located. Countless agencies will be able to sell you tickets and it will normally be cheaper going to these than buying from your hotel.

Departures run throughout the day including through the night and the vast majority of buses will head to Hanoi as the final destination. Make sure that your bus is going to Hoi An and not Da Nang. Even if they say it will stop there it’s not uncommon for people to be dropped off at the intersection with the A1 and have to make their own way into town. Make sure the sign on both the ticket and bus state Hoi An.

Most buses will drop you within walking distance of Hoi An Old Town but won’t go across to Cam An or An Bang beach. It’s a short taxi ride to cover the 5 km to the beach.

Tickets normally cost about $40 USD for the tourist bus from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An. A local bus would be cheaper but I’d not recommend doing over 800 km on one.

You can book all buses, trains, flights, and minibuses here, and compare bus types and prices side by side. This is a really good site for getting around Vietnam.

Best Way from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An

I’ve always loved train travel and here in Vietnam, it doesn’t disappoint. The soft berth cabin was great for our family of four including a triathlon bike which I could fit under the bottom bed. The A/C kept the heat down and I love waking up to a new destination rolling by the window. With food available to buy onboard or the option to bring drinks and food with you, you’ll never go hungry. For me, this is the only way to travel long distances in Vietnam.

Younger travellers may prefer to save the $20 and get the bus but remember that Vietnamese are rarely 6 foot plus and broad in the shoulder. That combined with the constant weaving and horn blowing and it’s easy to see why you won’t arrive refreshed. We have a friend who takes valium to get her through these journeys ( not recommended by us).

If you’re time poor then take the plane but with all the hassle of checking in and fluid limits bags etc I won’t rush to fly when the distance isn’t big and other options are available. Cost-wise it rarely works out cheaper than the train which being overnight isn’t going to eat into too much time. Booking a Place to Stay in Hoi An on Arrival

Hoi An has accommodation options at all price points, from hostels to guest houses, homestays, resorts, and luxury all-inclusive hotels. We recommend you book in advance and know where you’d like to stay. There isn’t much accommodation actually within the heritage-listed Old Town, but there is plenty clustered around the perimeter. You could also choose to stay in the countryside surrounded by rice fields, on one of the islands, reachable by a bridge, or on one of the beaches. You can see all Hoi An accommodation here.

If you want to stay weeks or months in Hoi An as we did, there are plenty of houses and apartments to rent. We suggest you book somewhere for a few days on arrival and organise your long term lodging once you’re in Hoi An. It took us just a few days and our house was beautiful. Alternative Onward Travel From Ho Chi Minh

While most people head north from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam has a huge area to the south and southwest. From the Mekong Delta to coastal towns and luxury islands off the coast.

Phu Quoc is one such destination that is making its presence felt internationally. A beautiful island that can be reached by road and boat. If you’re in a hurry you can fly there in under an hour. Have a look here at some great ways to head south out of Ho Chi Minh.

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An Overnight Train Guide

Sure, you can fly. You can even go by boat, or rent a car. But, there’s just something about a train. And when I was traveling from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An, Vietnam, I knew an overnight train was the best way to turn a trip into an adventure.

But, when it came to planning, this was no simple train trip. And this is coming from the travel planning queen!

In this guide, I’ve laid out exactly how I planned my trip by overnight train from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An on the Reunification Line in Vietnam!

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An Train Schedule

The very first thing you should know when designing your itinerary for central Vietnam is the train schedule for the Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An route. You’ll find the trains that travel overnight northbound from Ho Chi Minh, arriving in Da Nang (the closest train station to Hoi An) the next morning on the table below!

All of these trains travel daily, so you should find plenty of flexibility for your Vietnam itinerary. All of these trains have air conditioning, and each has the option to have a bed.

SE4 and SE2 are considered the best of the best within this list, and I traveled on SE4 myself!

Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An Train Fare Classes

When taking the train in Vietnam, you usually have four options for the type of seat or bed you want.

• Hard sleeper (6 berth)
• Soft sleeper (4 berth)

Soft sleeper is the most comfortable option for an overnight journey, so that’s what I chose. Including fees, I paid 875,000 VND, or $37.65 USD for my soft sleeper top bunk bed.

If you’d rather save money and book one of the cheaper fare classes, do so. But, if you can afford to spare it, a soft sleeper is worth the money. You’ll want as much comfort as possible on such a long train ride!

How to Book Your Train From Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An

I’ll be honest with you. This is where the planning gets tricky.

If you have a Vietnamese bank account, debit, or credit card, then you can book directly with the train company.

If you’re like me and you need to book with a foreign credit or debit card, then you’ll need to use one of four options:

• Buy your ticket a few days before in person at the train station
• Buy your ticket from a local travel agency

Baolau was by far the easiest, most cost-effective option of the four. I was able to book online, with a foreign credit card, and Baolau handled the rest for a nominal fee.

Sure, I’m cheap and I’d rather not pay fees at all. But, that’s not how it works when you book a train ticket in Vietnam as a traveler, unfortunately.

When you book with Baolau, you’re actually requesting for them to purchase a ticket in your name, on your behalf, and then they let you know if they were able to do so. This process took just a few minutes when I booked, though.

You can even choose which class you want, which train car you want, and even which bed or seat you prefer. You’ll also be able to see if other beds or seats have already been booked.

P.s. You’ll notice Baolau also offers flight booking — I only used their service for trains, and I never recommend booking a flight with anyone other than the airline. You can read my nightmare experience booking a flight with a third-party service here . You live and you learn!

How to Get to the Train Station in Ho Chi Minh

This advice is more do as I say, not as I do. Okay?

My transport from my adorable guest house in Ho Chi Minh to the city’s train station was a level 1,000 HOT. MESS.

I knew I needed food for the train, because my allergies are too bad to chance eating food that isn’t vegan. I got a Grab to drop me off at a local restaurant that Google Maps showed was a short walk to the train station.

Getting my dinner to go was easy. Walking to the train station from there was another situation entirely .

Basically, I ended up walking down a side street with loads of traffic and no safe place to walk…with my luggage…and my dinner…and my phone out to navigate. I was carrying way too much for one person down such a busy, tiny street, and I probably looked like an octopus.

Yeah, that was not wise.

What I should have done, and what I recommend you do, is get a Grab to drop you off at the train station. I don’t care how close you are. It’s not easy to find, especially in the dark.

A local to guide you will make all the difference between a stress-filled start and a relaxed beginning to your train journey.

What to Do Once You’re at the Train Station in Ho Chi Minh

Check in with the train attendants.

Once you enter the station, you’ll see some places to sit, counters to buy a ticket, a few stairs up to the platforms, and, of course, a board with train departure info on it.

Since you already have your ticket on your phone, you can scan it at the turnstiles, where attendants are available to assist you. After scanning, I was able to get on board immediately.

No one asked to see my passport or tourist visa, but have them readily available in case you’re asked for them to verify your identity matches the name on your ticket.

On the platform

After you’ve scanned your ticket and gained access to the train platforms, you’ll see more helpful attendants standing on the platforms.

Even if there’s only one train there at the moment, it’s best to go ahead and show them your ticket to make sure there that’s actually your train. Technical difficulties happen in train systems all over the world, and you never know if you’re delayed!

They can also show you how far you need to walk to reach your assigned train car — it’s way easier to walk with all your stuff outside than in a teeny-tiny train corridor!

Of course, if worse comes to worse and you’re about to be left behind, then go ahead and jump on. You can figure out the rest later!

What to Expect on the Overnight Train from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An

Sleeping arrangements.

First and foremost, I’m sure you’re interested to know about what to expect when sleeping on a train in Vietnam. When I arrived to my room, there were four bunks there. Mine was the top left bunk.

I did notice there were other travelers who chose to book an entire room for themselves, so they wouldn’t have to share with strangers. If that would make you more comfortable, then go for it! You will have to book all four beds in the room, though.

My bed was padded and pretty comfortable, with sheets, a blanket, and a pillow waiting for me. There was ample storage space for the top bunk above the doorframe of the cabin, with enough space for a suitcase and backpack. My carry-on and personal item fit with plenty of room to spare!

There are two caveats you should know about, though.

One, I don’t know how often the sheets are washed on the trains. Mine seemed clean when I boarded, but I never saw them replaced on other people’s beds when a new passenger came on the train.

Two, I did see a cockroach crawl on the wall next to my bed. I killed it with a stray napkin. No harm, no foul — but I was glad I never saw another one!

Food + Drink Options

Train attendants will come down the hallway offering meals, drinks, coffee, snacks, etc. for purchase on a trolley car. There wasn’t anything I could eat, so I ate what I brought from the little restaurant in Saigon.

It is normal to bring your own food and snacks on the train, and there’s no pressure to buy what they’re selling. It’s just an option for passengers who would rather have the convenience of getting food on the train!

There are bathrooms at either end of the hallway on the trains. The one I used to was much more spacious than I was expecting for a train, and it was pretty clean!

I used it to change clothes the next morning and freshen up after a long night’s rest. I also used the sink to brush my teeth, which is separate from the toilet room.

Arriving to Da Nang Train Station

When the train arrives to Da Nang, you’ll want to pay attention to your location on the map and to the train announcements. You should also notice many passengers getting their things ready to leave, because Da Nang is a popular stop on the Reunification Line.

But, the entire route doesn’t end until it reaches Hanoi, in north Vietnam! You don’t want to miss your stop, because the next one is Hue, and it’ll take a long time to get back to Hoi An.

The entrance and exit of the small train station in Da Nang is visible from the platform, so you shouldn’t get lost in the train station!

You’ll immediately be offered a taxi. If you want one, negotiate a rate with the driver in advance, and have exactly what you want to pay in cash!

If you’re not interested, politely decline and keep walking. I’ve only been followed by an especially persistent driver once; the rest will find another passenger.

How to Get from Da Nang Train Station to Hoi An

After you’ve arrived to the train station in Da Nang, you have a few options to get to Hoi An:

• Hail a Grab through the app,
• Hail a taxi just outside the train station,
• Book a private transfer or shared shuttle to Hoi An in advance, or
• Ride the local bus!

How to Take the Local Bus to Hoi An

For both the cultural experience and for your budget, I highly recommend taking the local bus to Hoi An once you’ve arrived to Da Nang. It’s just an hour, and you’ll even get to a stunning view of Da Nang’s famous dragon bridge on the way!

You’ll need to walk from the train station to the bus stop located at 155 Le Duan Rd.

Here’s the walking route on Google Maps:

Buses come every 20 minutes, and they’re yellow. You want Bus #1. They run from 5:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening.

When the bus arrives, you’ll pay and enter the bus in the back, not the front. I made the rookie mistake of trying to get on in the front, but the driver nicely let me know to go to the back!

There will be an attendant in the back of the bus who you’ll pay your fare to and they’ll store your luggage in the allotted space. When I traveled in Vietnam in March 2020, this bus ride cost 20,000 VND , or $1 USD.

Per Gecko Routes , “Also, note that bus drivers often try to overcharge tourists. Just point politely to the correct prices on their  official website   and don’t let them fool you.”

I want to note that this did not happen to me. All the locals and travelers I met on this bus were very friendly, including the attendant who held the money. No one tried to overcharge me. But, if this happens to you, I recommend to use Gecko Routes’ advice above.

From there, it’s a relaxing ride to Hoi An! You’ll know when it’s time to get off, because it’s the last stop on the route.

In total, this journey took about 20 hours. From the hotel in Ho Chi Minh to my accommodations in Hoi An, I took a Grab, walked, took the overnight train, took a local bus, and finally walked a few minutes to where I was staying.

Whew! What a travel day!

Did I Feel Safe on This Journey as a Solo Female Traveler?

For the most part, yes. I know some readers will have alarm bells going off in their heads as they read I was alone on this journey and slept in the same room as a couple of strangers, but neither of them bothered me or made me feel uncomfortable in any way.

In fact, everyone who ended up in the room was very friendly, Vietnamese and foreigner alike. A couple of German guys even jokingly asked me if I was a Titans fan when we talked about where we were from. LOL. 😂

The two moments I did not feel as safe on this journey were on the bustling side street on the way to Ho Chi Minh City’s train station, and walking away from the pushy Grab motorbike driver in Da Nang.

Even after I told him several times that I was not interested in a Grab or taxi, he continued to follow me. I ignored him, and he eventually went away. But, that definitely raised the hairs on my arms a little bit. A taxi driver had never followed me that far before, and I had to stand my ground more than usual in that moment.

Places to Stay in Hoi An

I stayed at a homestay called Nem’s House in Hoi An, and absolutely loved it. The front desk manager and I became fast friends and we even went to lunch one day at a local vegan restaurant. I was the only non-Vietnamese there, and it was an awesome experience!

But, if Nem’s House doesn’t have availability, you can find another great place to stay on Agoda !

Fun Things to See and Do in Hoi An

This guide is what I wish were available in one place when I was planning my journey from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An. I loved taking the train, even if my entire travel day was 20 hours and I had a couple of bumps along the way.

After all, if life isn’t adventurous in some way, how do we know we’ve lived?

Once I was on the train, in my bunk, my belongings put away, I finally took a deep breath. Inhale . Exhale .

I was on my own, and I was somehow making all of this work — full-time solo travel, maintaining the blog you’re reading right now, and growing my own entrepreneurial career while thousands of miles from home.

And, in this moment, I was overcome by grief. You see, my grandpa, aptly nicknamed Big Danny, is the only family member I have who’s also been to Vietnam. I missed him so much in moments that took me by surprise, and many of them came when I was traveling in Vietnam. This night was no different.

So, I did what I do best. I opened up my MacBook, created a new Word document, and started writing. I’ll cherish that poem forever, even if I never share it with the world. It’s ours.

I slept like a baby on this train ride, the clink of the wheels hitting the tracks with a constant sway. Back and forth. Back and forth. The exhaustion overcame me, and then I woke up in a new destination. That’s the beauty of an overnight train ride.

The bus runs every 20 minutes from 05:30 AM to 06:00 PM . You also can find taxis outside the arrival hall or book a private car in advance through your hotel or a reputable company. Make sure you agree on the price before you get in the car, and have some cash ready .

Here are some of the pros and cons of this transportation:

• The fastest way to reach Hoi An
• It is more comfortable and convenient than taking a bus or a train, as you can avoid traffic jams, long waits, and crowded seats.
• There are many airlines that operate this route.
• It is the most expensive way to travel, as you have to pay for the flight ticket, airport fees, luggage fees, and transportation to and from the airports.
• You will miss out on the views of the countryside and the interactions with the locals along the way.
• Weather conditions, flight delays, and cancellations will affect your travel schedule.

How do you get from Sai Gon to Hoi An by train? Well, it’s not as straightforward as you might think. There is no direct train to Hoi An, so you will have to transfer to Da Nang, which is about 30 km away from Hoi An. You can enjoy the views of the countryside, the mountains, and the coast as you pass by different provinces and cities.

First of all, you need to book a train ticket from Sai Gon Railway Station to Da Nang Railway Station .

There are several trains that run daily, but the most popular ones are SE2, SE4, SE6, and SE8.

• Travel time: about 17 hours
• One-way ticket cost: about $23 to $51 (depending on the class of service)

• For a long trip like this, we recommend getting a sleeper berth for more comfort and privacy.
• The station is located in the city centre, close to many attractions. If you have some time to spare, you can explore Da Nang

Secondly, get from Da Nang to Hoi An .

You may catch the yellow bus number 01 from outside the station and get off at Hoi An Bus Station. It will take you about 70 minutes and cost 1$ . You also book a taxi at the station or use a ride-hailing app. It will take you about 45 minutes and cost around $15 to $20 .

• The great way to enjoy the views of the countryside, the mountains, the coast, and the cities from your window seat.
• Meeting other travellers and locals on board and sharing stories and tips.
• You can book your tickets online in advance or at the station on the day of departure.
• A long journey which lasts at least 17 hours on the train
• You will need to be prepared for possible delays, cancellations, or changes in the train service due to weather, maintenance, or other factors.

Are you looking for a budget-friendly and adventurous way to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An? Then you should consider taking the bus. This is not only the most affordable choice, but it’s also a fantastic chance to view Vietnam’s many different landscapes. The villages, mountains, rivers, and rice fields that you pass by can all be marvelled at. You can book your ticket online or at the bus station.

• Travel time: about 17 to 20 hours
• One-way ticket cost: about $11 to $15 (depending on the season and the quality of the service)

Tips: You may receive an e-ticket by email, remember to print or screenshot it on your phone to present at the ticket counter of the station before boarding the bus.

You’ll need to rent a car in Ho Chi Minh as well as you also have an international driving permit and a valid driver’s license from your home country . Make sure you choose the right car rental company that has good reviews and offers insurance and roadside assistance.

• Driving time: about 17 to 20 hours
• Car renting cost: around $40-$60 /day. (depending on the type of car and the duration)

There are many car rental companies in Vietnam that offer this service, such as Avis , Budget , or Sixt .

• Flexible schedule and accommodations
• Ability to explore off-the-beaten-path locations
• Chaotic and challenging traffic to navigate
• Poorly maintained road conditions

By Motorbike

The most scenic and flexible way is to rent a motorbike or a car from Ho Chi Minh City and drive to Hoi An. This way, you may enjoy the gorgeous scenery along the trip, stop anywhere you like, and learn about the local culture and food. However, this option necessitates more time, money, and expertise. You will need a valid driver’s license, an international driving permit, and insurance . Gas, tolls, parking, and maintenance will all be extra costs.

Ho Chi Minh is Vietnam’s largest and probably busiest metropolis. Formerly called Saigon, the city pulsates with energy and organised chaos. Its streets are packed with motorcycles day in and day out, we absolutely have no idea how everyone manages not to bump into each other!

Don’t miss a visit to the War Remnants Museum and Central Post Office, one of the oldest buildings in Ho Chi Minh . Shop (and prepare to haggle) at Ben Thanh Market, and explore the nearby Cu Chi Tunnels. When its bustling streets become too much, know that you can always find solace in one of its many cosy coffee shops.

Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh by Bus

We do not recommend travelling this long distance by bus because it will be a really exhausting journey from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh. The bus ride takes at least 24 hours and the company operating on this route don’t always get the best reviews.

Do you still want to take a bus? If yes, read on for a step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Hoi An to Da Nang by Taxi

There are no direct buses from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh so you’ll first go to Da Nang Bus Station . When travelling in a group or carrying bulky luggage, the best way to do this is by taxi. Rates start from 440,000 VND ($17.30) when you book your private transfer through BookAway .

Travelling light? A motorbike taxi is a cheaper option at about 150,000 VND ($5.90). You can hail a moto taxi from the street or you can book one via Grab.

IMPORTANT: Public Bus #1 no longer operates from Hoi An to Da Nang the last time we checked (February 2023). Some tourists, who did not know this, have fallen victim to drivers offering overpriced taxis. This is why it’s best to pre-book your ride with a company or agency that you already trust.

Step 2: Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh by Bus

Futa Bus is the sole bus operator for the Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh route.

Again, we don’t see any good reason why you should travel this long journey by bus. On top of that, Futa Bus has gotten complaints about dirty buses and rude staff — something you don’t want to endure in a journey that takes 23 hours.

Bus fares start from 513,000 VND ($20), just a few dollars cheaper than a plane ride.

Futa Bus departs from Da Nang Central Bus Station and arrives at Ho Chi Minh’s Eastern Bus Station (Mien Dong) . This is still 19 km away from Pham Ngu Lao so if you’re heading to Saigon city centre, you can take a 30-minute taxi for around 370,000 VND ($14.50).

Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh by Train

Hoi An also does not have its own railway station. When travelling by train from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh, you can also take one from Da Nang.

Travel time by train takes around 17h 34m - 20h 38m, including transfers. This is much longer than a flight, but all trains operate overnight so you won’t lose a lot of daytime on the journey. Also, while train fares are often more expensive, you can save a night on accommodation.

Step 1: Hoi An to Da Nang Railway Station by Minivan

There are 2 ways you can get to Da Nang Railway Station from Hoi An: by minivan for 155,000 VND ($6.10) or by taxi with fares from 440,000 VND ($17.30).

Minivans are available daily from 06:00 to 20:00. Pick the minivan schedule that arrives at the station closest to your train’s departure time then pre-book your ride via BookAway to avoid any hassle on the day of your trip.

IMPORTANT: Pre-pandemic, cheap public buses operated from Hoi An to Da Nang. But the last time we checked (February 2023), these were no longer available.

Step 2: Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh by Train

You can choose from 4 trains operating daily from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh. Travel time is 16h 24m - 19h 28m, so all of these are overnight trips. Just pick a schedule that fits well with your itinerary.

But if you ask us, SE1 has the best departure and arrival times. You can check out of your hotel in Hoi An at noon, travel an hour to Da Nang, have a quick lunch, and then board your train. Enjoy the journey, have a good night’s sleep and wake up in Ho Chi Minh the next morning!

Because this is quite a long journey, we recommend that you get a bunk in a 4-berth sleeper. Fares start from 897,000 VND ($35). Cheaper 6-berth sleepers are also available, but may not be as comfortable.

Step 3: Ho Chi Minh Train Station to City Centre by Taxi

You are to get off the train at Saigon Station , 3.5 km north of Pham Ngu Lao. To get to Ho Chi Minh’s tourist centre, you can take a taxi ride that takes 10 minutes and costs 75,000 VND ($2.90).

Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh by Flight

Hoi An does not have its own airport, but there is one in the nearby city of Da Nang, which you can find 30 km north.

Including the transfers to and from the airports, a flight from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh takes only 3 hours 15 minutes.

TIP: If you decide to travel by plane, please consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.

Step 1: Hoi An to Da Nang Airport by Bus

From Hoi An, you can take a shuttle bus or taxi to get to Da Nang Airport. Travel time is around 1 hour.

Travelling solo? We recommend taking a shuttle bus. This will pick you up from Hoi An city centre and take you straight to Da Nang Airport for around 155,000 VND ($6.10).

For couples and groups, it is more convenient to take a taxi. Rates start from 320,000 VND ($12.60).

Step 2: Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh by Flight

From Da Nang Airport, a flight to Ho Chi Minh takes about 1.5 hours. Vietjet Air usually offers the cheapest flights, but you can also choose from a few other carriers like Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways and Jetstar.

Airfares start from 570,000 VND ($22). It’s best to book your tickets early to secure those prices. If you’re travelling during the peak season (December to April), rates can go as high as 1,500,000 VND ($59).

Step 3: Ho Chi Minh Airport to Ho Chi Minh City Centre by Bus

From Ho Chi Minh Airport, it takes 45 minutes via bus or taxi to the city centre.

Public bus #152 is the cheapest option at only 6,000 VND ($0.20). This drops you off at the roundabout across Ben Thanh Market , which is just a 10-minute walk from Ho Chi Minh’s Pham Ngu Lao Street.

Many people head to Hoi An to enjoy the beach. There is a long stretch of sandy beach in the area, that can be broken into five different sections. Some areas are privately owned, but there is still plenty of public beach to choose from. An Bang Beach is the most developed and popular beach in the area. Coconut Beach is the most luxurious, and Ha My Beach is similar to An Bang, but smaller.

Vietnam Travel Tips - What to Know Before Visiting Vietnam

I f you’re planning to travel Vietnam, there are a few things you need to be aware of. As a first time visitor it can be stressful not to know what to expect. There were a few things I wish I’d known before I went. So if you’re going to Vietnam, check out my top Vietnam travel tips to help you prepare!

1. Get Your Visa in Advance

If you’re visiting Vietnam, you’re going to need a visa to enter. Fortunately, it’s fairly simple to get and you can do it before your trip. In fact, airlines won’t even let you fly to Vietnam if you don’t have your visa ready. One person in our group had the wrong date (1 day later) on her visa and had to stay in the airport and buy a new flight. So make sure you get dates and airports right when you apply.

Also, be sure your application name matches your passport. I forgot to enter my middle name on my visa and had to redo it after it got rejected for not matching my passport.

It looks a little sketchy, but I promised it worked. The cost of the Vietnam visa is $25 for single entry . After your application is approved, your visa will be emailed to you.

When you arrive at the airport in Vietnam, there will be a line to show your passport and visa. You can save it on your phone or print it out. I did both, just to be safe, but showed them my paper visa.

2. Go at the right time

Ok, there’s no wrong time to to Vietnam, but you might want to go at the time that’s right for you ! I went to Vietnam in January and February and our weather was fantastic. Hot in Hoi An, warm in Hanoi, and warm in Halong Bay, but chilly at night. We were also there during Tet (Lunar New Year), Vietnam’s most important celebration, so it was incredible to see all the decorations and preparation for the New Year! Here are some weather guidelines for each area of Vietnam.

North Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa)

• Best Time to visit Northern Vietnam : September to November (Autumn) and March to April (Spring)
• Why? : The weather is pleasant with moderate temperatures and less rain, making it ideal for exploring the bustling streets of Hanoi, cruising through Ha Long Bay, or trekking in Sapa.

Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An)

• Best Time to visit Central Vietnam : January to August
• Why? : Central Vietnam has warm weather during these months, perfect for visiting the ancient town of Hoi An, the beaches of Da Nang, or the historical sites in Hue. The rainy season starts in September and can bring heavy downpours and occasional typhoons, especially in October and November.

South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta)

• Best Time to Visit South Vietnam : December to April (Dry season)
• Why? : The weather is warm and dry, ideal for exploring the vibrant life in Ho Chi Minh City or venturing into the Mekong Delta. The rainy season from May to November can see short, heavy showers, but travel is still possible during these months.

3. Visit More than One City

Vietnam is probably a lot bigger than you realize. And it’s very long, so destinations are quite spread out. Many people make the mistake of only visiting one large city in Vietnam and not doing any day trips or visiting another area of Vietnam. It is very affordable to get around Vietnam and you can get a cheap flight within the country, so it’s worth seeing more than one destination in the country.

4. Download the Grabb App

If you plan to get around by car in Vietnam, you should download the Grabb App. It’s like UBER or Lyft for Asia and it works really well. I used it all over Vietnam and Thailand without any issue. If you’re not in the mood to barter with taxi drivers or don’t have a lot of cash, this is a good way to go. It felt safer and easier to do this.

5. Pack Layers

The weather in Vietnam is really varied. When you look at a map you can see why…it’s a very LONG country at over 1,000 miles long! So the weather in Northern vietnam and Southern Vietnam can be very different. We spent a few days in Hoi An, a few days in Hanoi, and a few days in Halong Bay, and the weather on the Bay was much cooler than the rest of our trip.

I packed sun dresses, pants, and jackets and I was glad to have them all! Just be sure to check the weather of each destination in Vietnam. Trips are always better when you have the right clothes!

6. Bring an Extra Bag for Souvenirs

I’m not normally a huge shopper when I travel, but there were some great things I wanted to bring home in Vietnam. Luckily I had this great packable duffel that has been with me on many trips! It is HUGE and holds so much and is super sturdy!

Some things that I purchased in Vietnam:

• Lanterns – So many lanterns! One that I made in this class , and a bunch more that I purchased from a local shop.
• Silk Paintings – Probably my most favorite souvenir from Vietnam was the silk painting I purchased from a man disabled from the effects of Agent Orange, a chemical used to clear vegetation during the Vietnam War. Vietnam is famous for its silk paintings, which are embroidered on fabric and absolutely beautiful! They come in all sizes and different levels of detail made by local people. They can be anywhere from $5 USD to $500 USD depending on where you buy yours, how detailed it is, and how long it took to create. They are stunning though!
• Custom Clothing – Hoi An in particular is famous for its custom clothing tailors. You can get just about anything sewn to your liking while you’re there. Some tailors specialize in suits and some specialize in formal ware. Check reviews on Google before picking your tailor. We chose Rosa Tailor, mostly because she was across the street from our hotel and had a 5-star review on Google! I had two custom linen sets and two custom skirts made in just a few hours. It was so much fun to experience it and I love my clothes!

7. Have Cash on Hand

When traveling Vietnam, be sure to get cash out when you get to Vietnam or bring Vietnamese Dong from your bank with you. We needed a lot of cash in Vietnam. A few places took cards, but mostly it was cash only, especially in the local markets and for street food. I think I took about $300 Vietnam Dong out at the ATM and that lasted me about a week.

8. Drink Safe Water and Eat Safe Food

Food and water safety are always a concern of mine when traveling. And while I want to try all of the delicious food at the street food stalls and experience the local culture through food, I also don’t want to be sick for the rest of my trip (been there, done that)!

Try not to eat any raw vegetables fruit with a skin that could have been washed in contaminated water. Examples are lettuce, raw carrots, apples, etc. Peeled fruit and cooked vegetables are usually safe.

A good way to experience Vietnamese food is to take a cooking class from a reputable company where you have control over how the food is prepared and the water being used. Most classes will cater to a western audience and understand water concerns. Here is a list of good cooking classes.

Another concern is water. This is probably one of the most important Vietnam travel tips. Don’t drink the tap water! Water can be tricky in Vietnam. You should avoid drinking tap water. Either only use sealed drinking water or bring a good filter water bottle. This is the one I use.

Despite all your best efforts, you may still get sick. I recommend asking your doctor for any meds that might help with bacterial sickness in case you do get sick. I take prescribed antibiotics with me whenever I travel, but my doctor travels to India frequently and gets it! Another option is to see a travel nurse, although any time I go they seem to go overboard and end up scaring me with all the possibilities of my inevitable death!

I also highly recommend getting travel insurance for your trip, because you never know!

9. Be Prepared for Some Hard History

Americans visiting Vietnam should be aware of the country’s complex and difficult history.

When traveling to Vietnam, be prepared to face some hard history. Visiting Vietnam as an American can be a deeply moving and eye-opening experience, given the country’s complex past, particularly concerning the Vietnam War (known in Vietnam as the American War or the Vietnam American War). This period from the late 1950s to 1975 left indelible marks on both nations, shaping their histories, cultures, and peoples in profound ways.

The hardest part for me was seeing victims of Agent Orange, which was a chemical used during the war to clear the jungle vegetation. This chemical affected the genetics of people living in Vietnam, and in turn their children who wouldn’t be born for years to come. I think we will see these lasting effects for a while. It was hard to see this, knowing that my country was part of the cause, but they were all very friendly and welcoming to us as Americans.

10. Book Activities Before You Go

My last Vietnam travel tip is to book ahead. While some people can visit Vietnam and wing their activities, I like to have things planned and scheduled, I like to arrange trips to nearby places, and some tours do book up during busier times, so I think it’s a good idea to have at least a few things planned and booked ahead of time, especially for your first time visit to Vietnam.
