In this article, I’ll help you navigate the Trek Dual Sport hybrid bike family by comparing the Dual Sport 1, 2, and 3 .

You’ll learn about the differences between each model, who they are best suited for, and more.

Plus, I’ll tell you which model gives you the best value for your money to help make your decision easier.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Trek Dual Sport bikes are versatile thanks to the wide tire clearance, making them almost mountain bike-like. They are slower on paved roads than the Trek FX family due to their wide tires. However, the newer models (Gen 5) don’t have the front suspension as the older generation (Gen 4).

This article compares the Trek Dual Sport Gen 5. The main differences between Dual Sport Gen 4 and Gen 5 are the different frames, rigid fork, higher-volume 650b tires, and lower weight on the Gen 5.

Trek Dual Sport 1 vs. 2 vs. 3

The following table summarizes the main differences between all Dual Sport bikes that belong to the Trek’s hybrid bike families .

Dual Sport Pros & Cons Summary

I summarized the pros & cons of the Dual Sport series below.

Dual Sport Pros

  • Suspension fork better riding comfort (only on Gen 4, Gen 5 has a rigid fork)
  • Versatility
  • Availability in multiple sizes and colors
  • Pedals included
  • Compatible with racks, kickstands, etc.
  • Integrated cable routing
  • Lifetime warranty

Dual Sport Cons

  • Aggressive geometry may not fit beginners or less flexible riders
  • Wide tires have a higher rolling resistance

Dual Sport Main Features

Let me now explain the most important features of the Trek Dual Sport bikes and compare them.

Frame and Geometry

All Dual Sport bikes come with an aluminum frame and are available in S-XL sizes but with forks made of either steel, aluminum, or carbon.

Trek Dual Sport has relatively aggressive geometry compared to other hybrid bikes.

They have a relatively aggressive geometry (compared to the Trek FX and Trek Verve ), so you can sit in a more aerodynamic position. It’s more suitable for faster-paced rides.

But it’s not as aggressive as on road bikes. But still, it might take some time to get used to.

Remember that the Dual Sport bikes don’t have low-step or step-through options.

Wheels and Tires

The wheel size on the Dual Sport Gen 4 was 700c , but the newer Gen 5 uses 650b wheels with wider tires.

Dual Sport’s high-volume 50mm tires make them suitable for off-road terrain. Thanks to lower pressures, they can also better absorb bumps and vibrations, contributing to a more comfortable ride.

Detail on the Bontrager Kovee wheel and GR0 Expert tires.

However, they have higher rolling resistance , so you won’t be able to reach the same high speeds on paved roads as you would with road bikes or hybrid bikes like Trek FX .

Remember, only the Dual Sport 3 has tubeless-ready wheels but doesn’t come with tubeless-ready tires . Therefore, you may need to swap them later if you wish.

The Dual Sport Gen 5 has removed the 3X groupsets, which were overly complicated without significant benefits. Instead, they use 2X and 1X drivetrains that are simpler to use and maintain, as well as lighter.

Trek Dual Sport 2X (left) and 1X (right) drivetrains.

The groupset is one of the features that differentiate individual models. The most significant difference is with the Dual Sport 3, which uses a 1X drivetrain with 10 gears. The other two bikes have 2X drivetrains.

The main disadvantage of the 1X drivetrains is the limited gear range, which can make it challenging to find the right gear for your preferred cadence on some gradients.

Dual Sports use disc brakes instead of rim brakes. The entry-level Dual Sport 1 has Tektro mechanical disc brakes, while other models have hydraulic brakes from C-Star or Shimano.

Hydraulic disc brakes require less effort to apply and have a more controlled stopping power.

Trek Dual Sport front disc brakes (mechanical and hydraulic) detail.

TIP : Learn about the differences between hydraulic and mechanical disc brakes .

However, all Dual Sport bikes provide sufficient braking power, so you don’t have to worry about not stopping on time.

Dual Sport Gen 5 bikes have almost fully integrated cable routing , including the handlebar area.

Dual Sport frames come with mounts for kickstands, racks, and fenders , making it easy to install these accessories. These mounts are located on the front fork, top tube, and rear triangle.

Lastly, Dual Sport bikes come with slip-on grips , while the top-tier model, Dual Sport 3, has ergonomic lock-on grips that are easier to install, more comfortable, and help alleviate pressure on your hands.

So, which Trek Dual Sport bike is the best?

I believe the Trek Dual Sport 2 provides the best value for your money. This is due to its use of hydraulic disc brakes and lower weight than the Dual Sport 1. While the Dual Sport 3 is even lighter and uses better components, I don’t think it’s worth the extra $200. However, you should consider it if you prefer a 1X drivetrain, as the Dual Sport 2 has a 2X drivetrain.

Trek Dual Sport FAQ

Trek Dual Sport bikes are designed for both on-road and off-road riding. Think of them as mountain bikes without suspension or flat bar gravel bikes. The 5th generation of these bikes has eliminated front suspension, making them lighter and more agile. I recommend them for beginners and those who want a versatile bike for commuting, maintaining their fitness, or leisure riding.

The main differences between Dual Sport Gen 4 and Gen 5 are that Gen 5 uses smaller wheels with wider tires, a rigid fork, and a slightly different frame with a less aggressive geometry.

The main differences between the Trek Dual Sport and Trek FX bikes are their frame geometry, wheel size, and tire width. Trek Dual Sport bikes have more aggressive, performance-oriented geometry and use wider 650b tires. These features make them more suitable for off-road adventures. On the other hand, Trek FX bikes are better for longer distances. They don’t require as much energy to ride fast, especially on paved roads, thanks to their 700c wheels with narrower tires.

The main differences between the Trek Dual Sport and Trek Verve bikes are their frame geometry, wheel size, and tire width. Trek Dual Sport bikes have a much more aggressive, performance-oriented geometry and use wider 650b tires. These features make them more suitable for off-road adventures. On the other hand, Trek Verve bikes are better for city riding. Their more upright riding position improves visibility and handling in tight spaces and is designed to provide a comfortable ride.

This article was exactly what I needed to complete my search. I’ve test ridden all 3 models. After this information and the test rides, I will be purchasing a Dual Sport 3 Gen 5, XL size and probably Black Olive color. Thank you from Tempe, Arizona!

Hi Mike, Cool! I am glad you like it. 🙂 It’s also great you had the chance to test the bikes in person. I wish you a lot of enjoyable miles! – Petr

I own a 2021 DS2, and I wouldn’t want to ride on towpaths, bridleways, or even some footpaths (those that remain due to lack of maintenance) alongside UK A roads without the front suspension. It really helps absorb the impact, preventing discomfort in my hands and wrists. Additionally, I can choose to lock the suspension if needed.

Hi Robert, Thanks for sharing your experience. Trek DS offers more flexibility in lower tire pressure to increase riding comfort. – Petr

Trek Dual Sport is a Lightweight Gravel-Ready Hybrid

Trek has introduced the new Dual Sport, an adventure-ready hybrid bike that occupies a niche somewhere between road and gravel. For 2023, Trek has swapped out the suspension fork for a lightweight, rigid carbon affair, pairing it with an all-new lighter aluminum frame and a 27.5″ wheelset able to accomodate wider tires for improved off-road grip. The changes deliver a bike that is 1.9 kg lighter than its predecessor. Let’s take a closer look.

Trek Dual Sport Adventure Hybrid

2023 sees an overhaul of the long-standing Trek Dual Sport Hybrid, bringing to market a much lighter bike designed to bridge the gap between tarmac and trail.

2023 trek dual sport 2 frame bags bontrager

Switching from 29″ wheels to 27.5″ wheels, the Dual Sport is now able to accomodate 50mm wide tires (2.0″) as compared to the 40mm wide tires we saw on the previous model. Trek say the smaller wheels make for a more nimble ride, while the wider tires add comfort and control with enhanced surface area, improving grip on a variety of off-road surfaces.

Ditching the 63mm travel suspension fork, the Dual Sport now rocks a much lighter rigid fork up front. It is made from carbon fiber, and is said to remove chatter from the ride, reducing fatigue and smoothing the ride further. While it certainly saves on grams, it’s also relatively maintenance-free as compared to the suspension fork. That said, cables are now routed through the headset in a bid to clean up the cockpit. You can read what bike mechanics think about that concept here.

Meanwhile, the new fork does have the benefit of being able to carry cargo thanks to the rack-mounting bosses positioned on each leg. These complement the rack mounts on the rear triangle, while mounts for fenders (on the front and rear) will keep the commuter contingent happy (and clean).

Let’s funnel water directly into the headset/ downtube/ BB on a bike that will be regularly ridden in the rain and parked outside.

That said, it otherwise seems like a pretty great bike and it looks fantastic.

Jake

How would that happen? The HT stem area stays clean on my bad weather bike, most of the spray comes off the back of the tire and hits the downtube. Holes in the dust cover there would be a non issue in my experience.

Sean

Sweet! Awesome to finally see some “cool” hybrids in the market.

Try telling a 50-year-old man that they don’t need a “front shock”. They will not be pleased.

The shocks that they used to put on bikes like this were really heavy and barely worked. I don’t think it’ll be missed.

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

trek dual sport 3 tire size

Smaller frames (S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

Trek DS8.3 Dual-Sport Bike Tire Upgrade

Trek DS 8.3 with Continental AT Ride tires and Kenda Tubes

My Trek DS (Dual-Sport) 8.3 has served me well over the last couple of years. It’s quick enough for road riding but stable enough for light trail riding. Though not a mountain bike or a road bike, it’s versatility has proven useful as a great “take one bike” ride. I could go on, but this post is not about my bike, but the tire upgrade I just did. (FYI, I also upgraded the tires on Sandy’s Specialized Ariel DS bike, with the same Conti’s but we’ll stick with my bike for the purpose of this article)

I’ll start with a little background (aka, why I decided upgraded tires were needed). Last fall, Sandy and I rode some trails in Lubbock, and though my bike performed beautifully, the tires didn’t fare so well. Uphill climbs on gravel were tough due to slipping, and the 38mm tires were just thin enough to make a really good “plow” in anything very soft (sand or deep gravel). And although Sandy made it through unscathed, I had 2 flats by the end of our ride because of the evil little cacti that somehow seemed to be able to hide right in my path. (I also went through a third tube the next day because apparently, I had not gotten all of the thorns out of my rear tire). At this point, I decided that more durable. trail-ready tires were definitely going to be my next upgrade.

Since were are headed to Palo Duro Canyon State Park with Jonathan, Rusty, and Michelle in a few days, and trail riding is on the agenda, this upgrade got upgraded to priority.

My original plan was to buy a second set of wheels to hold my new tires so that I could easily switch between trail and road setups. After a little research, pricing things out, and since a new mountain bike might cause undue marital stress, I opted for just tires this time around. 🙂

My friend Rusty has been speaking highly of Continental’s GatorSkin tires, but sadly those are only available as road tires. I did, however, find that Continential makes the AT Ride tire that has similar puncture protection (just not branded GatorSkin ) and in a 700x42mm size that is perfect for the upgrade that I wanted to do. (Thanks Rusty!) I ordered 4 of them, and 4 new Kenda tubes (since we were getting a larger tire). NOTE: The AT Ride comes in a folded or a wire bead version. I ordered the folded version, for easier storage later if needed.

Changing the tires and tubes on both bikes only took about an hour, and was a breeze. I love the look of this tire! The tread pattern says, “yeah, I bite!” and the sidewall design/lettering is sweet! (Hey, I’m a designer… esthetics are important to me!). One small negative to note: although they are bigger than the 38mm tires I am replacing, the specified 42mm might be stretching it. I would estimate, closer to 40mm, but I won’t split hairs. (I have seen other reviews stating the same thing. I might reach out to Continental at some point, and see what their stance on this is) .

I’ll have more to allow on the performance aspects of the AT’s after our rides at Palo Duro , but Sandy and I did get to take a quick test spin out at our “home” state park, Palmetto SP. We rode on gravel, sand, and even some mud. The AT’s held a firm line and did not get squirrely in the soft stuff. Uphill grip (although not very much to test it on) seemed much improved. They also rode well and did not cause any noticeable “drag” on the pavement, or the wooden boardwalks.

So, my first impression of the Continental AT Ride is definitely a thumbs up. I’ll put them through their paces this weekend at Palo Duro, and will have a full run-down next week. Till then, ride hard (and stay upright)!

Pedego launches three new ‘groundbreaking’ e-bikes including Moto, Cargo, and Trike

Avatar for Micah Toll

Pedego , one of the earliest electric bike brands to enter the US market well over a decade ago, has announced one of its biggest new e-bike rollouts yet. The company launched three new models consisting of the Moto, Cargo, and Trike.

The company referred to the bikes a “three groundbreaking additions” as they offer new performance, technology, and frame styles that we haven’t seen before from Pedego.

“This is officially the next generation of electric bicycles,” said Pedego CEO Brian Stech. “Built to exceed the industry’s highest standards, each bike is outfitted with cutting-edge technology available only to Pedego customers, offering riders industry-leading safety, increased range, numerous customization options, and ultimately a superior riding experience for all.”

The new Pedego Moto ($3,995) is a moped-style e-bike of similar appearance to bikes like the Juiced Scorpion and other popular step-through moped e-bikes.

The full-suspension design includes dual rear coil-over shocks, adding to the motorcycle vibe. A large 48V battery with 920Wh of capacity is found mounted in the psuedo-double-wishbone frame leading up to the fixed rear bench-style saddle.

Fat tires allow riders to hit the trails more comfortably or simply roll over pockmarked streets and urban trails commonly strewn with obstacles.

A 10-speed SRAM transmission gives the few riders who will actually pedal this e-bike a wide range of gears to choose from.

Shipped in Class 2 mode with a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h), the e-bike is listed as “Class 3 ready”, meaning higher speeds can likely be unlocked.

The Pedego Cargo ($3,995) is a longtail cargo e-bike that features an extended rear rack.

Referred to as a “sport utility e-bike” by the company, a number of accessories are included to help make the Cargo ideal for carrying children or gear. Wooden side panels add to the looks and functionality, as do the fold-up running boards that provide a platform for groceries but can fold in to make the bike more narrow when not in use.

Options for either 460Wh or 672Wh batteries give riders a choice between battery sizes to choose just how far they want to go. A range extender battery accessory can be added under the rear bench, though, for riders who occasionally want to travel further but don’t always need that much battery for daily rides.

An 11-liter waterproof storage bag is mounted behind the seat tube, offering on-board storage that can help keep riders’ belongings dry.

Fat tires combined with front suspension should make for quite a comfortable ride, even when the terrain isn’t ideal. Just like the Moto, the new Pedego Cargo comes with a 20 mph (32 km/h) top speed but appears to be unlockable by those who prefer traveling at higher Class 3 speeds.

trek dual sport 3 tire size

Lastly, the new Trike ($3,495) offers a fat tire three-wheeler with a large open rear tube for hauling plenty of cargo on a super stable platform. With trikes, riders don’t need to put their feet down or balance a heavy bike at rest, making it an ideal foundation for cargo needs or riders who simply want more relaxed rides (and more relaxed stops).

The Trike comes with a higher voltage 52V battery that features 910 Wh of capacity. A top speed of 15 mph (25 km/h) prevents it from hitting those turns too quickly, though slowing down even further during tight turns is always advisable on a trike.

There’s no suspension on this one, but the fat tires should help soak up some of the bumps along the way.

All three new models are SGS/TUV Certified to UL2849 and UL2271 standards, covering both the lithium-ion battery and the entire e-bike system. The batteries even use potting technology that encapsulates the cells in a heat-absorbing resin. That helps protect against corrosion of the cells over time and also prevents the spread of thermal events if the battery is ever breached and damaged. Such breaches are even more unlikely though, due to the encapsulation of each battery cell.

The bikes also include new headlights with high and low beams, plus Pedego’s custom tail light with brake lights, running lights, and integrated turn signals.

For power, the three models all come with a 750W nominally-rated motor that has a peak rating of 1,500W. Respectable SRAM and Tektro components grace the e-bikes, along with a full-color LCD screen with an ambient light sensor and USB-C charging port for powering devices like cell phones.

In addition to a hand throttle, Pedago explained that the bikes also come with a custom-designed pedal assist system featuring two types of drive modes:

“PEDALSENSE® is Pedego’s proprietary propulsion software that delivers a signature elevated riding experience. With PEDALSENSE®, Pedego continues to lead the industry by combining cutting-edge technology and customization options, setting a new standard for excellence in e-bike design and performance. PEDALSENSE® offers riders the freedom to personalize their ride like never before. With the ability to choose between two customized pedal assist features, Cruise and Torque assist, riders can tailor their experience to match their unique riding style and preferences. Cruise assist seamlessly matches the rider’s pedaling speed, ensuring a smooth and effortless journey, while Torque assist provides an extra boost of power only when needed, amplifying the rider’s effort and enhancing efficiency and control.”

Electrek’s Take

Sure, they’re not the most flashy names we’ve ever seen. But then again, it’s hard to argue about trademarks when your bike is named “Cargo”.

The bikes themselves sound pretty darn nice, and Pedego is known for not cutting corners. Hydraulic disc brakes with meaty 203 mm rotors, higher spec transmissions, nice color displays, potted batteries, etc. But the downside here is the price, since on a dollar-per-dollar basis, you can easily find more affordable alternatives in the oversaturated e-bike market.

However, Pedego has never tried to win on a dollar-per-watt comparison. Instead, the company relies on its added value, such as the industry-leading 5-year warranty (that includes anti-theft protection and lifetime frame warranty), the network of over 200 brick-and-mortar pedagogy shops, and high levels of customer service. If there’s one company that will hold your hand through every stage of an e-bike purchase, including after-sales support, it’s definitely Pedego. You pay out the nose for it, and so it might not be right for everyone, but you get what you pay for.
