Crypto Platform Voyager Keying in on Staking, NFTs in 2022

The firm reported a record $165 million of revenue in the fourth quarter

  • Voyager is building an NFT offering that will allow customers to access a variety of marketplaces

Voyager Digital is doubling down on staking and moving into NFTs as the company looks to diversify revenue streams following a record quarter.

The company doubled its revenue in the fourth quarter compared to the previous three-month period, executives said on a Tuesday earnings call.

Revenues of $165 million last quarter — consistent with estimates announced in January —  were up from $3.5 million during the same period a year earlier.

Profits were more muted at $2.5 million, dragged down by a $16-million loss in the company’s staking and lending business. Rewards paid to customers outpaced fees from those services, according to Compass Point Analyst Chris Allen. He wrote in a research note that the deficit was an improvement from prior quarters.

CEO Steve Ehrlich said he expects Voyager’s staking business to become profitable sometime this year.

“We are investing heavily in revenue diversification as we look to reduce our reliance on trading volume,” Ehrlich said.

Subscribe to Blockworks Daily

Roughly $87 million in revenue came from transactions, according to Chief Financial Officer Evan Psaropoulos. About $57 million stemmed from lending and staking, beating the company’s $50-million target for the sector.

“The diversification of our revenue is leading us to believe that even in times of lower market activity and lower crypto prices, our minimum quarterly revenue will exceed $100 million,” Psaropoulos said. “The increase in revenue diversification strategy and product roadmap will only increase the minimum floor.”

Total verified users increased about 50% to 3.2 million at the end of 2021, while funded accounts grew about 25% over the same span to reach nearly 1.1 million.

Assets on the platform grew to $5.9 billion, as of Dec. 31, up from $4.3 billion at the end of September.

Staking, NFTs and equity trading

Voyager now supports staking for 11 coins, and Ehrlich noted that the company is working to offer staking on Avalanche (AVAX).

The firm continues to target a minimum of $40 million in yield and staking revenue per quarter.

Voyager has also hired a team to develop its NFT (non-fungible token) strategy. Ehrlich said the company is focused on simplifying NFT participation.

“We believe that there are so many marketplaces out there, consumers want to be able to access them all, and how we deliver that entire environment to them, we believe, is the future of NFTs,” he said. “It’s not just one marketplace, and so we’re looking at a solution that encompasses a larger scale all off the Voyager platform.”

Voyager is also building a “brokerage of the future,” where users would be able to trade equities from the company’s app using stablecoin USDC for funding trades.

The company in November detailed its forthcoming crypto debit card , which would pay up to 9% annual rewards. Ehrlich said Tuesday that select employees are testing the card, adding that its waitlist has reached 200,000 people.

Voyager, meanwhile maintains plans to expand to France and other European countries later this year.

Does BlockFi’s settlement affect Voyager?

Ehrlich also touched on BlockFi’s settlement with regulators, which he called “a significant development in the industry” that could provide a potential regulatory path.

The crypto lending platform is reportedly expected to pay $100 million in fines to the Securities and Exchange Commission and state regulators over allegations it illegally offered a high-interest yield product.

BlockFi CEO Zac Prince wrote on Twitter Monday that the settlement “identifies a clear path forward for folks to earn interest on their crypto.”

Ehrlich argued there are differences between Voyager’s Loyalty Program , which offers Voyager Token holders rewards, and BlockFi interest accounts. Voyager is in ongoing discussions with regulators, he added.

“Voyager has received requests and subpoenas from the SEC and certain states in connection with the rewards program as part of non-public fact-finding inquiries,” Ehrlich said. “Of course, we believe that Voyager accounts that earn rewards comply with existing US law and look forward to demonstrating that as necessary.”

Will the Voyagers Unknown NFT Release Date Finally Come?

Voyagers Unknown has pushed back the release date numerous times. When will the NFTs finally drop? Here's what investors can expect.

Rachel Curry - Author

Feb. 3 2022, Published 2:13 p.m. ET

NFTs are hitting the blockchains like Adele hits high notes—with consistency. One NFT project, Voyagers Unknown , is facing obstacles in its NFT release. The company creates high-quality 3D avatars, which it plans to put out for bid as NFTs bound by smart contracts.

The original release date has come and gone. Now, Voyagers Unknown fans await the drop. Here’s what we know about the release date and the latest updates on the NFT project.

What are the latest updates on the Voyagers Unknown NFT release date?

Originally slated for December 2021, the Voyagers Unknown NFT release date got pushed back to January 23, 2022.

On Jan. 24, Voyagers Unknown tweeted about how preparation for the upcoming NFT release is going. The team wrote, “We have recently encountered some issues in relation to AWS (hosting environment) and our back-end building/uploading process. It looks to be an issue that requires manual attention from the AWS Team in order to reach a resolution.”

The team responded to the delay by saying that Voyagers Unknown is delaying its new website and NFT mint “until further notice.”

It's right around the corner... đŸ’„đŸ’„ pic.twitter.com/l8EtZRUkNf — Voyagers: Unknown (@VoyagersUnknown) January 30, 2022

Five days later on Jan. 29, Voyagers Unknown tweeted pictures of two beyond-human avatars and said, “It’s right around the corner.” As of Feb. 3, the website is still down.

What—and who—is Voyagers Unknown?

Voyagers Unknown reports a three-person team named Lionel, Christian, and Espen. The trio could potentially be aliases for the real Voyagers Unknown founders.

Voyagers Unknown will sell NFTs at prices as high as 0.3 ETH, or $790 equivalent as of the afternoon of Feb. 3. If the project takes off, the price is likely to soar on the secondary market. These NFTs will represent ownership of high-quality 3D avatars.

How can investors buy a Voyagers Unknown NFT?

When Voyagers Unknown does mint NFTs , interested buyers on a curated Access List can get a raffle ticket using Coinbase. Voyagers said that it went with Coinbase to keep out bots and exploits during the raffle process. A random selection system will choose the ones who can then purchase the NFTs. Voyagers Unknown said that it will verify the user’s identity, connected wallet, and funds.

According to Voyagers, “The Access List is highly populated with engaged users who are eager to mint our Voyagers.”

The raffle period will be open for 24 hours. Once minting is enabled, users have 48 hours to purchase the NFT. The team will sell any remaining avatars via a whitelist system for which there “won't be any specific requirements for them, but they will be handpicked.”

Those who live in geolocations without access to Coinbase will have to wait for an update from the Voyagers team. They want everyone to be able to access the NFTs and are looking for a solution.

Are Voyagers avatars ready for the metaverse?

voyagers unknown, is 🚀 🌙 ✹ — 𝕬𝖟𝖗é𝖑 (@roobanrai) February 1, 2022

These avatars and all of their moving parts aren't even ready for the blockchain. However, the team said that they're working on how to get them ready for the metaverse “and other virtual worlds.” Doing this would mean integrating the 3D art into metaverse protocols .

For Voyagers, it might also mean finding a way to change an avatar’s clothes and presenting a Voyagers ID card that could grant some sort of virtual VIP access, among other use cases.

Voyagers wrote, “”We have been going back and forth on how we can achieve a seamless, fair, and efficient mint on our release day.” NFT fans are still awaiting an updated release date.

World’s first collection of Jewish NFT’s launched by JCC Russia

  • On February 2, 2022

The NFT project digitizes Judaica from the famed Moscow synagogue, such as digital replicas of the Moscow synagogue’s own “Bima” and “Aron Kodesh.”

By JERUSALEM POST STAFF The Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Moscow in Russia announced Monday that they launched an NFT project titled “NFT-Tzedakah,” which is being branded as the “most modern way to give charity”, on NFT auction platform OpenSea.

The NFT project digitizes Judaica from the famed Moscow synagogue, such as digital replicas of the Moscow synagogue’s own “Bima,” which is the platform where the Torah is read, and their “Aron Kodesh,” the chamber where Torah scrolls are stored.

Rabbi Mordechai Kantor, rabbi of the Jewish student community at the Moscow School of Economics, initiated the project. The NFT collection includes four models of Judaica objects from the Moscow synagogue, as well as three tokens made from coins issued on the synagogue’s grand opening 22 years ago. The auction will last two weeks.

The project received the blessing of Rabbi Berel Lazar – the Chief Rabbi of Russia. Rabbi Lazar penned a letter lending his support to the NFT project after examining the subject from all sides of the Halakhah and working on the project for a total of six months.

“We must use good deeds in everything new that is revealed in the world – and now also with NFT tokens that have become commonplace recently,” said Rabbi Lazar. “Whoever buys the Jewish tokens, in addition to owning his digital version, also gives to the Jewish community.”

NFT’s (Non-Fungible Tokens) are data units – typically images, videos or audio clips – that are stored on the blockchain. NFT’s have grown tremendously in popularity over the last year, as the Ethereum-based tokens have gained adoption among the art community and have led to collectors getting in on the fun speculating on rising NFT prices. Twitter founder Jack Dorsey sold an NFT of the company’s first-ever tweet in March 2021 for a $2.9 million sum.

The auction will be hosted by NFT platform OpenSea at https://opensea.io/collection/mjcc. More information about the project is available at http://nft-tzedakah.com/.
