Turkey Visa for UK Citizens

Turkey entry requirements from the uk.

Türkiye has been a popular travel destination for British travelers for decades and continues to have high numbers of tourists every year. The appeal of beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and a rich history often led to long queues at immigration, which were significantly reduced following the introduction of the Turkey e-Visa for UK citizens.

Getting prepared to visit Türkiye from the UK no longer requires the need to obtain a visa on arrival at the border, or the need to apply for a visa online for certain periods of short stay.

However, there are other entry requirements that British citizens must meet in order to gain entry to Turkey at an immigration checkpoint.

Do UK Citizens Need a Visa to Turkey?

No, since March 2nd, 2020, citizens of The United Kingdom are not required to apply for an electronic visa to enter Türkiye . Nationals of the United Kingdom who plan to travel to Türkiye now do not need a visa in order to visit the country for short-term stays for tourism or business purposes, or to transit to an onward destination.

However, the maximum period that a British national can stay in Türkiye without a visa is 90 days within every 180-day period. For longer stays, a Turkey visa for UK citizens is required and must be applied for from the nearest Turkish embassy or consulate in advance of the intended travel dates.

Additionally, British citizens who wish to work or study in Türkiye will need an approved visa or residence permit regardless of the length of time they need to spend in the country. This must also be obtained from a Turkish embassy or consulate in the UK.

Documents Needed for UK Citizens Traveling to Turkey from the UK

UK citizens currently need the following documents to travel to Türkiye:

  • Valid British passport
  • Valid visa for Turkey (if staying more than 90 days).

There are a number of passport requirements for Turkish visas from the UK that must be followed:

Documents Needed for UK Citizens Traveling to Turkey from the UK

  • British travelers have to hold a valid passport with more than 150 days remaining before its expiry on their expected date of arrival in the country, otherwise, they may be refused entry at the border.
  • It is also necessary for the passport to contain free blank pages to receive entry stamps from an immigration officer on arrival.

British citizens should also check the requirements for traveling back to the UK from Türkiye, as these are constantly changing due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Arriving in Türkiye from The United Kingdom

Travelers arriving in Türkiye from the United Kingdom will need to present the required documents listed above to immigration officials on duty at the border, regardless of whether they are entering the country through a land, sea or air border crossing.

The same process is necessary for UK visitors arriving from other destinations, such as the EU Schengen Area.

Dual citizens who are entering the country with a Turkey visa for UK citizens should be aware that they must present the same passport that they used to complete their visa application form.

Please be aware: the Turkish border officials on duty during your arrival have the final say on whether you may or may not enter the country . You could be denied entry into Türkiye if the border guard:

  • Has cause to suspect that you falsified information during your visa application
  • Finds discrepancies (such as traveling with a different passport to the one registered for your Turkish visa)
  • Has suspicions about your reasons for entering Türkiye

Nevertheless, this situation very rarely happens. In most cases, the immigration officer will approve your entry to Türkiye , issue a stamp in your passport, and allow you to cross the border.

Who needs a visa for Turkey?

Are you going on a holiday or business trip to Turkey in 2024 or 2025? All tourist and business travellers must apply for a Turkey visa in advance, unless they are travelling with a European passport or a European identity card. The visa requirement does not apply to travellers with either British or Irish nationality.

On the other hand, travellers with certain nationalities still need a visa. If you are an Armenian, Dominican Rublican, Jamaican, Mexican, United States or South African national, you can easily apply for the visa for Turkey on this website. Some other travellers can only apply for the visa under specific circumstances, or only on the official Turkish government website. Underaged travellers that are not exempted from the visa requirement also need their own visa.

What is an e-visa Turkey?

The e-visa is an official travel authorisation from the Turkish government to enter the country via land, sea or air. When this website mentions the visa for Turkey, it always refers to the electronic variant known as the "e-visa Turkey". You can apply for this travel permit entirely online. After the visa has been granted, it will be sent to you by e-mail ( example e-visa ). You can submit an application for yourself, for somebody else or for an entire travel party at once.

Turkey visa requirements

To make use of the e-visa Turkey you have to meet a number of requirements. The most important requirements are summed up below; more information can be found on the page about the requirements for the Turkey visa .

  • You need a visa for a short stay in Turkey, and you do not need a paper visa
  • Your trip has a tourist or business-related purpose.
  • You are travelling with a travel document eligible for a trip to Turkey .
  • If travelling with a passport, it has to be valid for at least six more months after your arrival in Turkey.
  • You cannot enter into employment with a Turkish employer during your stay.
  • You cannot study at a Turkish educational institution during your stay.

Exceptions for the visa

Are you arriving in Turkey by cruise ship? Then you only need to apply for a Turkey visa if you plan on staying ashore for longer than 72 hours. You can also change flights and transit at a Turkish airport without a Turkey visa, but you are not allowed to leave the airport during the layover period.

Are you a truck driver, an archaeologist, or are you filming a documentary? In these cases you do not qualify for the e-visa; you have to file for a sticker visa at the Turkish embassy.

If you do not meet the Turkey e-visa requirements, but you do need a visa for your trip, you cannot do your application online, and you will have to make an appointment at the embassy. This applies if you do not have a valid passport or ID-card, but want to travel with your residence document. However, some travellers may be able to apply for a single entry e-visa with a maximum stay of 30 days through the Turkish government website. This applies to some people who hold a valid visa or residence permit from a country in the Schengen area, from Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States.

Validity period and maximum length of stay

If you comply with the rules and avoid fines, deportation or an entry ban, you can travel to Turkey with the Turkey visa over the course of 180 days. This validity period starts on the date of arrival, as indicated in the online application form. During these 180 days, you are allowed to stay in Turkey for a maximum of 90 days. However, nationals of certain countries are only allowed to stay for a maximum of 30 days in Turkey.

Your stay in Turkey with the e-visa may be continuous, or it may be cut up into parts if you want to make several separate trips within the validity period. However, this does not apply to all travellers with the e-visa, regardless of whether the maximum length of stay for them is 90 days or 30 days. Some travellers who can apply for the e-visa through this website are only eligible for a single-entry visa. More information on the validity, extensions, renewing and expiry of the visa can be found on the page about the validity period of the visa for Turkey .

Example for the visa with a 90 day validity period: you fill in the application form for the e-visa Turkey on 1 February. You indicate in this form that the visa has to be valid starting 1 March. The visa will consequently be valid for 180 days starting on that date, until 28 August. Between 1 March and 28 August, you can stay in Turkey for a maximum of 90 days. This can be one stay of 90 consecutive days if you have a single-entry e-visa. With the multiple-entry e-visa you may instead make three separate trips to Turkey following which you may stay in the country for 30 days each time. The multiple entry visa allows you to make an unlimited number of trips to Turkey, as long as the total amount of days does not exceed the permitted amount of 180 days.

The same principle is applicable to the multiple-entry e-visa with the shorter permitted length of stay of 30 days. The single-entry visa, however, only permits travellers to make a single trip to Turkey . If you are using the single-entry visa, you will not be allowed to use this same visa to return to Turkey after your first departure, even if the maximum duration of stay was not met. You can, however, always apply for a new single-entry e-visa.

Turkey visa: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

You can apply for the Turkey visa 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The application process is entirely online. You can apply for the visa by filling in the online application form on this website. This will take about five minutes. Afterwards, you pay the visa cost of £54.95 per traveller. This can be done through your preferred payment method, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Trustly, Google Pay, Apple Pay and PayPal . All these payment methods come with no delays, meaning that the application will be processed as soon as the payment has been made.

Regular delivery or urgent application

The Turkey visa is usually delivered within 3 days. If you leave for Turkey today or tomorrow, it may be prudent to submit an urgent application . Urgent applications are processed immediately by the immigration service and are on average granted within 45 minutes. This means that with an urgent application, you can already expect the e-mail containing your e-visa 45 minutes after making the payment. You can print out the visa and take it with you on your trip to Turkey. If you do not have a printer, you can present a digital version of your Turkey visa on your phone or tablet.

You can apply for the e-visa Turkey right away. If you have any questions, you can consult the page with frequently asked questions . If your question about the visa is not listed there, you can contact e-Visa.co.uk.

I received my visa so fast. I needed a visa and wasn’t sure how long it would take so I opted to do the express. Well I didn’t realize express meant within the hour. I was so pleasantly surprised. Nichole, Redondo Beach
I was in a hurry to get the visa due to plan changes from originally going to Macedonia to Istanbul. It was amazing how fast the urgent service option delivered my visa. I will definitely recommend and use this company again. D. Griffin - Denise, Nis
Very pleasantly surprised how user-friendly the service was. Being one of the older (pre computer) generation, I am used to finding many sites unhelpful. My experience here was in total contrast to what I had anticipated. Thank you. Victor, Tunbridge Wells

Turkey Visa for Tourists: A Complete Guide

Updated: October 19, 2023

Turkey visa on arrival image

Turkey has a liberal visa policy offering visa exemption and e-visas to many nationalities. A Turkey visa is also quite easy to obtain from the embassy or an authorized agent.

Turkey has introduced e-Visa to simplify its visa application process and replace its Visa on Arrival. Currently, 30 nationalities can obtain a Turkey e-Visa from the comfort of their homes. 21 nationalities can also obtain an e-Visa if holding a visa or residence permit from any Schengen country, US, UK or Ireland.

Many nationalities from the African continent that were previously eligible for e-Visas were unfortunately removed from that list recently. They will now have to apply for a Turkey visa through a Turkish mission or an agent.

Minimum passport validity to enter Turkey as a tourist

The passport validity is different for different nationalities. It also depends on whether you are visa-exempt or require a visa.

For nationalities that are visa-exempt, the minimum passport validity required is 60 days beyond your “allowed period of stay” in Turkey. For some, it’s 90 days.

For those who require an e-Visa, VOA or visa from the embassy, the minimum passport validity required is 6 months from the day of arrival. For some, it’s 3 months beyond the validity of their visas.

So in general, you will be fine with 6 months of validity remaining your passport at the time of entering Turkey.

Turkey transit visa requirements

Transit visas are NOT REQUIRED for transiting through Turkish international airports.

If you are not leaving the international transit area, then you do not require a transit visa. But if you have to leave the international transit area, or claim your bags, or change to a different airline, then you would require a transit visa.

Turkey visa requirements for cruise passengers

A Turkey visa is NOT REQUIRED for cruise passengers for up to 72 hours.

Cruise visitors are issued a Harbor City Entry Permit that’s valid for 72 hours and limited to the harbor city where the cruise arrived and its surroundings.

TURKEY VISA ON ARRIVAL

Turkey introduced its e-Visa system in 2013 with the intention of phasing out its Visa on Arrival. But VOA is still available and a few countries that are eligible for e-Visa are also eligible for obtaining VOA at international airports in Turkey.

Even though the e-Visa takes only a few minutes to apply, the VOA fee is considerably lower than the e-Visa fee for certain nationalities. It makes sense to simply get a VOA instead of an e-Visa if you are eligible and the fee is lower.

Validity of Turkey Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days, with multiple entries. Total stay cannot be more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

How long can you stay in Turkey with Visa on Arrival

Turkey Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days. That means, if you continue to stay in Turkey after you have obtained your Visa on Arrival, you can stay up to 90 days. But if you leave and come back, you can only stay until your Visa on Arrival expiration date.

Also, your total stay in Turkey cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Your arrival date in Turkey is March 10
  • You obtained VOA on March 10
  • Your visa is valid from 10 March 2022 to 08 June 2022 (90 days)
  • After 45 days, on 24 April 2022, you left Turkey.
  • You entered Turkey again on 19 May 2022 using your previous VOA. You can only stay till 08 June 2022, which is 21 days.

Visa on Arrival application process

The VOA process is quite quick at airports in Turkey. Right before the immigration or passport control, you will see a section called “Visa”. Stop by there and get your visa on arrival.

For obtaining VOA, all you need is your passport and visa on arrival fee in USD, EUR or GBP. Some nationalities require a passport-size photo.

Documents required

You must present the following documents.

  • Passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Turkey
  • Cash in USD, EUR or GBP for visa fee payment

The Visa on Arrival (VOA) fee starts from $30 and goes up all the way to $70 USD depending on nationality. Below is the Visa on Arrival fee for all eligible nationalities.

Processing time

It usually takes a few minutes for the Visa on Arrival process. But it depends on how busy the Visa on Arrival section is.

With its wealth of historic sites and diverse, stunning landscapes, Turkey is a perennially popular destination for travelers, and passport-holders from more than 100 countries can easily enjoy all that it has to offer.

Here’s our guide to Turkey’s entry requirements, with information on visa types and rules around exemptions and extensions.

What you need to know about tourist visas in Turkey

Visitors from Europe (excluding Cyprus), Israel, Japan, New Zealand and much of South America and Central America can enter Turkey without a visa for stays ranging between 30 and 90 days, depending on their country of citizenship.

Tourists from more than 100 additional countries, including Australia, Canada and the USA, are eligible to apply for an e-visa. This requires simply filling out an online application form and paying a fee, which varies by country of origin but generally ranges between $20 and $60.

Travelers who need to apply for an e-visa can do so through a dedicated website run by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), which includes a detailed FAQ section. Alternatively, visas on arrival are available to citizens of around 30 countries , but, generally, completing the visa application online before traveling is the quicker and easier option.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website provides details on visa requirements for all individual countries. All travelers’ passports should be valid for at least 60 days beyond the duration of the visa for which they are eligible.

Tourist visas for cruise ship passengers

Cruise ship passengers who arrive by sea can come ashore for up to 72 hours (three days) without applying for a visa.

Visa extensions and other types of visas

Visa extensions are not available to nationals of any country. Anyone who wishes to stay in Turkey longer than the duration allowed by their tourist visa (90 days within a 180-day period for US citizens, Europeans and some others) must start the process of applying for a residence permit before their visa expires. Overstaying a tourist visa can incur a fine and might even result in a temporary ban on returning to Turkey.

Anyone who plans to work, study or live in Turkey must apply for the appropriate visa at a Turkish embassy or consulate abroad before entering the country.

E-visa and visa on arrival

The easiest way to obtain a visa is by approaching the entry port. To get these multiple entry sticker visas with a validity of 90 days, the traveler should pay £20 as cash to the immigration authorities. Travelers should make sure that they are carrying British currencies to get a sticker visa, as the Turkish immigration authorities will not accept Scottish and Northern Ireland currencies.

Citizens of the United Kingdom can obtain Turkey visa on arrival from all International airports.

Special note: Even though easy to obtain, the visa on arrival provision can be phased out by the Turkish government without any prior notice. So, it is always recommended to take an e-visa to ensure hassle-free traveling experience.

On the other hand, e-visas allow foreign nationals to obtain Turkey visas within a few clicks. Perhaps, this is undoubtedly the safe and hassle-free way to travel Turkey legally. Please find the three steps to get an e-visa for Turkey.

  • In the first step, the applicant should enter his or her personal information on the application form. You should also upload a scanned copy of your passport along with a recent photograph. Details of the supporting documents which should be uploaded can also be found in this section.
  • Next you should make the payment, and it can be made either using a debit card or credit card.
  • After processing, the Turkish e-visa will be sent to your email, and you can take a print out of the visa copy for your travel needs.

Different types of Turkey Visa

Turkey Government has classified visas into different types according to the activities a foreign national will engage in while inside the country. Please find below the different types of visas issued by the government to enter Turkey.

Turkey Tourist Visa

In Turkey, tourist visas are usually issued to foreign nationals who are not permitted to obtain visas at the point of entry. In usual cases, tourist visas are issued for up to 90, and it will be valid for single entries and multiple entries as per the traveler’s requirement.

How to apply for Turkey e-visas?

By visiting the official Republic of Turkey e-Visa website, UK citizens can apply for an e-visa, and it costs just $20. The visa applicant can pay the money either by a credit or debit card. Travelers should keep in mind that this e-visa should be applied 48-hours before the journey, and can do so up to 3 months in advance. It is always advised to take a printed copy of your e-visa to avoid possible hassles at the Turkish port of entry. You can also carry the e-visa copy on smartphones or tablets, and can show it to the immigration authorities.

If you have any queries regarding applying for a Turkey e-visas, always seek the help of entrusted agencies like Visa Genie, and never ever fall in the traps of non-credible agencies, as they might charge additional fees. There are also cases where unauthorized agencies have issued fake visas for British nationals.

Can I extend my stay duration after entering Turkey?

As mentioned above, tourist visas are issued for a period of 90 days. However, if the foreign national decides to stay in the country for more than 90 days, he or she should make sure that application for visas that ensure a longer stay is submitted. If you wish to remain in Turkey after making your entry, you can apply for a residence with Turkish authorities before the expiry of 90-day period.

Note: If any UK citizen continue staying in the country illegally, he may face severe legal consequences including fine and deportation. In the worst scenario, the Turkey government may even ban the foreign national from re-entering the country.

Requirements to obtain a Turkey business visa

Citizens of the United Kingdom can make use of the web-based visa issuance system to obtain Turkey business visa. It should be noted that an e-visa is basically an electronic authorization given by the Turkey government to enter their country legally. Even though this electronic authorization is equivalent to a visa, no stamp will be placed in the passport.

The basic requirements to obtain a Turkey tourist visa are mentioned below.

  • The passport of the visa applicant should have a validity for at least six months, and it should have a single blank page.
  • The foreign national should submit proofs of onward and return flights, along with hotel booking confirmation. It is also recommended to submit an invitation letter from a Turkish entity.
  • Apart from these documents, the applicant should complete the Turkey e-visa questionnaire very carefully without any errors.

Turkey Student Visas

How to obtain a student residence permit?

It should be noted that the student should complete this step within 30 days after he or she reached the country. After the registration process is completed, authorities will grand the student a residence permit.

The residence permit will allow the student for multiple entries to Turkey if his or her visa is valid. The student should always make sure that his visa is not expired, and if it is about to expire, make sure that you are renewing it to avoid legal troubles.

Turkey Residence visa

Turkey residence visa are meant for travelers who wish to stay in the country for a longer period of time, much more than the days offered by tourist visas. In order to obtain a residence visa, you should apply at least two months before your departure, so that the authorities will get sufficient time to process your request. It should be noted a residence visa does not mean that you can work and earn in Turkey, instead, you can enjoy your time in the country just like any other tourist, but for a longer period of time. To obtain a residence visa, you should also demonstrate to the authorities that you are capable enough to support you financially during your stay in Turkey.

Turkey work visa

If you wish to work in Turkey, it is mandatory to obtain a Turkey work visa. To obtain a work visa, the foreign national should send an application to the Turkey consulate or the country’s embassy at least two months before the departure. Your employer should also send a letter to the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS) requesting to sanction your work visa.

Just like a student visa, work visa holders should also obtain residence permit after entering Turkey. It is always recommended to apply for a residence permit within 30 days of your entry, as even small delays could result in serious legal issues.

Turkey Film Visas

Turkey has been slowly emerging as a favorite destination for filmmakers to shoot movies, and in the past few years, several movies from different nooks of the world were shot in the country. Film visas cannot be obtained from consulate or embassy, instead, the applicant should contact the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. If you are a normal tourist who wishes to shoot non-commercial videos from the country, then this type of visa is not a must.

UK Visas for Turkish Citizens

uk visa for turkish nationals

IN THIS SECTION

Most Turkish citizens will need a visa to come to the UK.

The type of visa needed will depend on the purpose of your stay. Whether you want to visit friends and family in Britain, or are looking to work or study here, in this guide we explain the most common UK visa options for Turkish nationals.

Do Turkish citizens need a visa for the UK?

The Turkish Worker and Turkish Businessperson visas are now closed to new applicants. However, existing visa-holders on these routes can still apply for further leave to remain under Appendix ECAA Extension of Stay of the Rules or, if they have lived in the UK long enough, for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) under Appendix ECAA Settlement.

With the exception of citizens who hold a Turkey-issued diplomatic passport, under the UK’s Immigration Rules, most Turkish citizens must apply for a visa in advance of travelling to the UK. This will be the case, even if you are only coming to the UK for a short period of time, for example, for tourism purposes. A visa will also be needed if you plan to study, work, establish a business or join family members in the UK, although Turkish citizens have a wide range of UK visas potentially available to them. These include study visas, temporary and long-term work visas, business visas and family visas.

UK visitor visa for Turkish citizens

If you are a Turkish citizen looking to visit the UK, even for a short period of time, you will need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa before boarding a UK-bound carrier.

You can come to the UK as a standard visitor for a number of permitted activities, including for the purposes of tourism, for visiting friends and family, for unpaid business-related activities and even for a short course of recreational study. However, you will only usually be able to stay in the UK for up to 6 months at a time. You must also be able to show that:

  • you will leave the UK at the end of each visit
  • you are able to financially support yourself and your dependants during your trip, or have adequate funding from a third party to support you
  • you are able to pay for your return or onward journey, or have adequate funding from a third party to pay for this journey
  • you will not try to live in the UK for extended periods of time through either frequent or successive visits, or attempt to make the UK your main home.

UK study visas for Turkish citizens

If you are a Turkish citizen looking to pursue a course of studies in the UK unless, for example, this is only a short course of recreational study of less than 6 months, or otherwise permitted under the visitor rules, you will usually need a Student visa.

If you are aged 18 or over and you will be studying at degree level, you can stay in the UK for up to 5 years. If your course of study is below degree level, you can only stay for up to 2 years. However, you may be able to extend your visa to continue your studies or, having successfully completed your course, switch to a Graduate visa to look for work in the UK.

You can apply for a Student visa to be able to study in the UK if:

  • you are aged 16 or over
  • you have been offered a place on a course of study by a licensed student sponsor
  • you have enough money to support yourself and to pay for your course, where the amount can vary depending on your circumstances
  • you can adequately speak, read, understand and write English
  • you have written consent from your parents if you are under 18.

UK work visas for Turkish nationals

If you are a Turkish citizen looking to work in the UK, there are various routes available to you. The Skilled Worker route is one of the most common immigration routes for overseas nationals looking to undertake UK-based paid employment. A Skilled Worker visa will allow you to come to or remain in the UK to do an eligible job role with an approved employer for a period of up to 5 years. You may also be able to extend your visa or apply to settle in the UK on this route. To be eligible for a Skilled Worker visa, you must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • have the offer of a suitable job role from a Home Office approved employer
  • have a certificate of sponsorship from your employer with information about that role
  • be doing a job that appears on the list of eligible occupations
  • be paid a minimum salary based on the type of work that you will be doing
  • be able to adequately speak, read, understand and write English
  • prove that you have enough personal savings to support yourself while you are in the UK.

Do Turkish citizens need a visa to set up a business in the UK?

If you are a Turkish citizen looking to set up a business in the UK, you can apply for an Innovator Founder visa. This will allow you to stay in the UK for 3 years, at which stage, provided your business is a success, you can either apply to extend your stay or to settle.

To be eligible for an Innovator Founder visa, you must:

  • have an innovative and viable business idea with the ability to grow, including the potential to create jobs, and to grow into national or international markets, where that business idea has been recently endorsed by a Home Office approved body

Can Turkish citizens live in the UK?

There are various ways in which Turkish citizens can obtain permission to live in the UK. This could be on a short-term basis on either a study or work visa, or by applying to live indefinitely in the UK on any one of the many immigration routes that provide a path to settlement . This could include on the Skilled Worker and Innovator Founder routes, or as the immediate relative of a British citizen or someone already settled in the UK. If you are already in the UK as a Turkish Worker or Turkish Businessperson, or as the dependant of the primary visa-holder, you may also be able to extend your stay or apply to settle.

Below we look at the different ways in which you can apply to permanently live in the UK.

Under the work rules

There are various work routes which provide a path to settlement in the UK, including the Skilled Worker and Innovator Founder routes. For example, on the Skilled Worker route, provided you have lived in the UK on this route for a continuous period of 5 years and meet the other eligibility requirements, including continuing to be employed by a Home Office approved employer, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain. Commonly known as ILR, this will then allow you to live, work and study in the UK without restriction. Having held ILR for a further period of 12 months, you may also be able to apply for British citizenship.

Under the Innovator Founder route, you can apply for ILR after 3 years in the UK on this route, provided you meet the other eligibility requirements, including that your business continues to be endorsed by an approved body having met the requirements for settlement.

Under the family rules

Under the family rules, you can apply to come to the UK as the spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner or child of a British or Irish citizen, or someone already settled in the UK, although this can include someone who is in the UK on either a Turkish Worker or Turkish Businessperson visa. You can then subsequently apply for indefinite leave.

If you are applying as an unmarried partner of someone settled in the UK, you must have lived with your loved one for at least 2 years when you first apply and continue to do so. If you are applying as a child, you must be under 18 and not leading an independent life. In addition to meeting the relevant relationship requirements, to be eligible for a Family visa, you may also need to prove that you have a good knowledge of the English language when you apply, and can financially support yourself and any dependants while in the UK.

The length of your initial visa will depend on the basis upon which you apply, as well as whether you apply from inside or outside the UK. However, after continuously living in the UK on this route for a period of 5 years, you can apply to permanently settle.

Under the ECAA rules

Following the UK’s departure from the EU, certain directly effective immigration rights under EU law were disapplied, including provisions within the European Communities Association Agreement (ECAA) between the EU and Turkey. However, as a Turkish national or the family member of a Turkish national who was granted leave under the ECAA on or before 31 December 2020 (the end of Brexit’s transitional period), you can apply to extend your stay under Appendix ECAA Extension of Stay of the Rules. You may also be able to apply to permanently settle in the UK under Appendix ECAA Settlement.

You can apply to extend your visa on the ECAA route as many times as you like, provided you meet the eligibility requirements. However, after 5 years continuously living in the UK as either a Turkish Worker or Turkish Businessperson, or dependant, you can apply for ILR.

How much does a UK visa for Turkish citizens cost?

The cost of a UK visa for Turkish citizens can vary, depending on the type of visa sought.

For example, for a Standard Visitor visa, the cost is currently £115, while the cost on the study, work or family routes will be significantly higher. You will also be liable on any one of these routes to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year for over 18s, and £776 per year for students and under 18s. If applying to settle, the cost is again much higher, at £2,885 per applicant.

However, if you are applying to simply extend your stay in the UK as either a Turkish Worker or Turkish Businessperson under the ECAA rules, there will be no charge.

How long does a UK visa for Turkish citizens take?

The time it takes for the Home Office to make a decision on a UK visa for Turkish citizens will depend on whether the visa application is made from inside or outside the UK, as well as whether that application is for limited or indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

When applying for a time-limited visa from overseas, such as a Standard Visitor or Skilled Worker visa, the wait time is usually up to 3 weeks, compared with up to 8 weeks when applying to switch or stay longer from within the UK. If applying for ILR, or if applying for an extension application under the ECAA rules, the wait time is usually up to 24 weeks.

Importantly, when applying to switch to a visa from within the UK, or for an extension of stay or settlement, you must always apply prior to expiry of your existing visa.

One of the most popular getaways for UAE residents in the smouldering hot summer is the UK.

The cloudy weather gives residents some much needed respite from the sun – the lifestyle and relatively shorter flight distance makes it popular.

Earlier this year, an Electronic Travel Authorisation was introduced as a replacement for visas to the UK for UAE nationals. The application process is quick and entirely digital, with most visitors applying via a mobile app and receiving a swift decision on their application.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Other nationals residing in the UAE, however, have to apply for a visa to visit, here is how you can apply for the visa:

Applying for a visa to the UK is relatively simple and most of it can be done online.

Step 1: The first thing you must do is find out which visa you need to apply for. While there are multiple types of visas that you could apply for depending on the duration of your stay and purpose of your visit, the most popular one is a 'Standard Visitor Visa'.

Step 2: Find out and prepare your documentation on the basis of the visa you have applied for.

Step 3: Once you have gathered all relevant documents, the next step is to apply for your UK visa. Head to the official website of the UK Government to apply (www.gov.uk)

Step 4: After you complete your application, you will be asked to pay for it online. On completing the payment, you you will receive a reference number, which you must take a note of.

Step 5: Finally, upload all relevant documents with your application online.

Step 6: Now, you have to book and attend an appointment at your closest VFS Application centre in order to submit your biometrics.

Step 7: You will be informed if your visa has been accepted or rejected and will be called to the VFS centre to pick up your passport. In case you want to get it delivered you can do so by paying an additional courier fee.

A 'Standard Visitor Visa' costs £115 (approximately Dh554) for up to six months.
