British Airways permanently closes all Elemis lounge spas

Emily McNutt

British Airways is doing away with the Elemis spas in its lounges for good. Though the in-lounge spas have been closed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic , the airline has decided that they will not reopen.

The airline quietly made the decision last week, which was first reported by Turning Left for Less .

British Airways provided the following statement with regard to the decision to permanently close the spas:

"We're proud to work with Elemis, a brand our customers love, and we continue to provide their products on board our flights. Our Elemis lounge travel spas have remained closed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and we have decided that they will not be reopening. Over the coming months, we will be reviewing new propositions to support our customers' health and wellbeing pre-flight."

British Airways had Elemis spa locations at London Heathrow (Terminal 5A South; Terminal 5B; Terminal 5 Arrivals; Terminal 3 departures) and at New York Kennedy (Terminal 7).

Since the opening of the spas, eligible passengers (those traveling on a first or business-class ticket or Gold members traveling long-haul) were permitted a complimentary 15-minute spa at the Heathrow locations. At the JFK location, only those traveling on a British Airways-operated flight were entitled to the free 15-minute massage.

There were often complaints of overcrowding in the Elemis spas. It was difficult to find an appointment, as passengers are granted access to treatments on a first-come, first-served basis, allowing passengers to book their treatments from 28 days until 48 hours before departure.

Ultimately, this is a downgrade from British Airways. Although the spas have been closed since the start of the pandemic, they were something that frequent premium cabin travelers and elite members could take advantage of before a flight. It's worth noting, however, that BA has said that showers will remain open.

Meanwhile, the airline's biggest competitor in the U.K. Virgin Atlantic offers a spa of its own in its Heathrow Clubhouse location. There, passengers can select from a small range of complimentary offerings before selecting to purchase a treatment from a wider range of options. The Clubhouse has been closed since the start of the pandemic.

Unlike the British Airways Elemis spa locations, the Clubhouse spa operates on a different model. If BA had decided to expand the offering at the Elemis locations to more than just 15-minute complimentary massages, it could have been a different story. Instead, the airline has decided to forgo bringing the spas back in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Review: Elemis Spa London Heathrow

Inside the british airways lounge complex in heathrow terminal 5 is an elemis spa designed for business and first class passengers as well as those holding an executive club gold card. premium passengers can enjoy a complimentary 15-mintue treatment prior to their flight, though securing an appointment can prove difficult..

BA actually has four Elemis spas at London Heathrow:

  • Terminal 5A South (07.00-21.00)
  • Terminal 5B departure lounge (07.00-21.00)
  • T5 Arrivals lounge (06.00-14.00)
  • Terminal 3 departure lounge (07.00-21.00)

For this review I will focus on the Terminal 5A South spa.

Securing An Appointment

Only first class passengers are entitled to make an appointment. You can request the appointment online via this page , though I recommend calling +44 161 448 3013 and making the appointment over the phone. This will allow you to confirm your appointment immediately. Bookings open 28 days prior to departure.

When I traveled first class on British Airways I called 25 days before and most times were already booked…

My Experience

I reserved a 15-minute neck and shoulder massage. At 8:30a, precisely on schedule, I appeared at the front desk of the Elemis Spa, located directly adjacent to the Concorde Room . There were two others in line in front of me, but both simply added their name to the shower queue.

Although I was welcomed warmly, the lounge attendant told me that I would need to wait a few minutes longer for my massage in a salon-like area. In the meantime, she provided a detailed form to fill out. It felt like I was visiting a new doctor’s office, with many medical-related questions on what amounted to a release of liability form.

Finally, my masseuse showed up, a lovely woman from Surrey…who talked my ear off for the entire 15 minutes. She struck up the conversation, she asked questions, and she ended up doing much of the talking.

When you think of massage ambiance, you tend to think of candles and soft music, not a discussion about the British economy and the Monarchy. But I did not mind. She meant well and I did not hold her gabbing against her.

The massage wasn’t bad either. Rather than laying on a table, you sit on a chair:

She used different Elemis oils during the treatment and hot and cold towels to “awaken” my senses:

I was invited to relax and offered a cup of tea after the treatment:

I returned to the spa more recently as a Club World passenger (with no appointment). Even though the spa appeared empty, I was told no appointments were available. I was offered the use of a chair massage (like you see in many Asian lounges) for 15 minutes…which I took.

Part of me wants to write the spa experience is just a gimmick, and it is, but it is more than that. It also represents an effort to offer a useful service that I was thankful to take advantage of. Though my talkative masseuse may have been a bit unorthodox,  don’t miss out on the experience if you are flying on BA out of London in a longhaul premium cabin.

Glad you enjoyed it, the talking would have put me off too. I enjoyed the facials I got a couple of years ago, but mine were quieter and more relaxing.

Just a note, you mentioned you were focussing on the spa in T5B, but from the description of it being near the Concorde Room, that would be T5A South,

British Airways Elemis Travel Spa, London Heathrow

British Airways has relaunched its Elemis travel spas at London Heathrow with new interiors and soft furnishings designed by the acclaimed Kelly Hoppen MBE, and a new spa treatment menu.

The structure and format of the spas remains the same with an updated complimentary treatment menu for passengers travelling in First Class, Club World, and Gold members of the Executive Club when flying long-haul.

Only passengers in First Class can book an appointment in advance. Access to spa treatments for all other eligible passengers is dependent on availability on the day. This can vary widely – it is generally much better in the arrivals lounge, rather than the departure lounges.

The Elemis spas are located in London Heathrow Terminal 3 departures, Terminal 5A South departures, Terminal 5B departures and the Terminal 5 arrivals lounge. There is also an Elemis spa in BA’s recently updated lounge complex at New York JFK Terminal 7, which will benefit from a new treatment menu later this year.

At the First Wing , we made it early in the morning. All of this rush was to make it to our appointments at the Elemis Spa. I’d been to the spa many times before, but it was the first time my wife Shipra was going to be able to go through, so it made sense to get her to try it out. When we booked our tickets, I reached out to British Airways via the YouFirst page to book our Spa appointment at a reasonable time (8 AM). However, I was told the slots were full already and to arrive at the airport and then book a slot.

Given I’d gone through this drill many times before, sometimes you could get a chair/therapist and sometimes you won’t. So we had a preference to get this done beforehand itself. So I gave British Airways pushback on this about how it was unreasonable to expect us to come and book a seat at the hour given we had so less time at the airport.

British Airways came back confirming us for a 7:00 AM and a 7:20 AM appointment after a few rounds of to and fro, so we would have wanted to stick to those times.

When we arrived at the spa reception, the receptionist was, of course, playing with her phone. The other one was the Shower Room attendant and was working to get people over to the Showers as quickly as the buzzers could ring.

British Airways Terminal 5 Elemis Spa

For whatever stupid or egoistic reason, the attendant who was responsible to assign masseurs to the slots decided that she won’t allow the both of us in the Spa together.

I’d booked myself an Aviator facial, while Shipra decided to go for a Jet Set Polish. So it was perfectly possible to get both of us different crew at the same time. Shipra went first instead of me, so the attendant decided to give my appointment to someone else, after having me fill up the release form.

Here is the full menu for your reference.

British Airways Terminal 5 Elemis Spa Menu

British Airways Elemis Spa Salon

Soon enough, Shipra was with an attendant, getting her nails shaped up and polished. Talk about the need for a touch-up paint job on your nails before heading into your anniversary trip. We guys won’t get it.

In the meanwhile, I went around looking at the whole Spa, taking pictures. The Spa has always been very well equipped with a large set of salon tables in the middle for you to do your own makeup if needed and the grooming menu on offer.

Behind the long tables were chairs, presumably for facial treatments.

British Airways Elemis Spa

Lining up the walls was a nice fireside couch for two. Of course, no one in waiting at 7:30 AM in the morning here.

Most of the treatments at this Spa, however, happen in Massage Chairs, in individual cubicles which there are about 6 of in the main lounge and 3 in the Spa in the satellite Terminal 5 B Lounge.

Each of these booths is equipped with an intelligent massage chair, which is so good that I do want to take it home every time I sit in one. At least one booth has a backrub massage chair. This time, I thought I was going to be giving the chair a miss given I was taking on a face treatment, however, that was not the case.

After Shipra’s 20-minute treatment was completed, which included commotion due to a BA employee falling sick and hence being brought into the Spa for a check-up by the doctor on hand, they called for me as soon as the masseuse had completed the appointment (originally on my appointed time!)

I walked into a room with a hanger, the smart chair (yay!) and was asked to be seated. That meant dropping the jacket on the hanger, losing the shoes and then getting into the chair. For the times I don’t secure a human treatment, I do try and take the chair massage at least, given it is good!

British Airways Elemis Spa Massage Chair

The masseuse who attended to me was very good, and after getting me started with a 15-minute intelligent treatment on the chair, which was a lottery indeed, set about working with a set of hot towels to get the facial started.

Over the 15-minutes we chatted about  Brexit,  the U2 concert and the future of British Airways while she deftly went about helping me being at ease and treat me after a rough 15 days on the road for some skin care.

The treatment ended very well, and usually, the spa attendant comes about to hand you over a few samplers of Elemis products right after. However, this was not the case this time around either for me or the wife. So, we went out of the spa and headed back to the Concorde Room for some breakfast.

British Airways’ Elemis Spa is one of the best features of BA when you travel, even though their seats are uncompetitive. The Spa has existed for a long time and has the capacity for a lot of travellers unlike how at some other F class lounges where they just have the capacity to accommodate one or two passengers at a time. So, if you are out and about the BA lounges, do try and see if you can get a massage or treatment, given it is one of their best offerings on the ground.

The other lounges exist at Terminal 5 Arrivals with a large battery of showers, Terminal 5B with a few massage chairs which can be booked at the main T5 lounge itself, and at Terminal 3.

Have you been to the Elemis Spa with British Airways? How has been your experience?

The British Airways Lounge JFK New York with Elemis Spa Review

British Airways Lounge JFK New York Terminal 7

The first time I visited the British Airways lounge JFK at Terminal 7, I was with my niece and we had just fled the city that was gridlocked due to a Presidential visit in our own version of the Amazing Race .   I was stress out upon arrival while my niece was eyes full of wonder at all the food and the fact that it was free. Despite having come from dinner, my niece filled her plate with mini sandwiches, nuts, M&M’s and, to placate me, a piece of fruit.   For my return visit to the lounge, it was a less stressful arrival with Mom.  Our flight was the last one of the day near 11 p.m. and Labor Day weekend the lounge wasn’t as crowded as it could be.  We Mom walked in and saw the food stations, she like my niece had wide eyes and asked “is this all free?”, “Yes, all free”.  It was the start of her luxury holiday to Paris & London.  So let’s explore the British Airways Lounge JFK and see what Mom liked.

The lounge is located upstairs from the gate/terminal area.  When you arrive in the terminal from the special Business/First security area, you need to follow the signs past the boarding gate and small food court and make a right.  You go up the escalator and into the lounge lobby.  The staff was pleasant but not as welcoming as the ladies at the BA lounge in Philly .  Our boarding passes were scanned and we were directed to proceed into the business class lounge area.  We passed the luggage storage area and an empty room with work stations.  There is also a children’s play area in the lounge.

The British Airways Lounge JFK

British Airways Lounge JFK

When you arrive you have two sides of seating area with the bathrooms and food stations in between, almost an H shape.  There is a surprisingly water feature in the middle of the room which can be relaxing or annoying depending on how you treat the sound of falling water. Scattered about are lounge chairs which are a bit low (as evidenced by having to help Mom stand up), couches, small tables for groups and outlets in the side tables and along the wall.  It’s rather a large lounge but no natural light and low ceilings so it feels smaller depending on how many people are milling about.  The set-up and decor is similar to that in Heathrow, Manchester and Philadelphia so there isn’t much to distinguish it from others in my opinion.

There is a window but you get to look over the check in area down below which at the late hour didn’t make for any good people (or celebrity watching).

The British Airways Pre-Flight Dining Room

For British Airways customers (the lounge is also used by OneWorld elites), there is a pre-flight supper served where you can sit down and enjoy a hot meal prior to boarding.  I generally take advantage of this in Philadelphia when I fly the sleeper flight (soon to disappear, sadly) but since Mom & I had just come from dinner, neither of us was interested in another meal.  We were greeted by the hostess who showed us the menu and told us to come back at any time.

British Airways Lounge JFK Drinks Bar

The Food Stations

British Airways Lounge JFK Fruit Snacks

British Airways lounges are pretty consistent in my experience with enough of this, that and the other to satisfy your snacking or light meal cravings.  You won’t go thirsty as the drinks bar is fully stocked with soft drinks, juice, water, beer and liquor to help yourself. If you have a food thing like me (no dairy, no gluten) then you will need to settle on fruit and nuts and look to eat in the dining room.

At the British Airways Lounge JFK the fruit is in the middle of the aisle hopefully prompting passengers to take a healthy snack on the way to the plane (we picked up bananas).

The buffet had a small sandwich selection, cheeses, meats, yogurt and such.  Packets of snack foods like potato chips (or crisps as they say in the U.K.) were offered along with the snack jars of M&Ms, nuts and cookie (I still miss the Walkers shortbread I used to stock up on).  In the far corner if you are walking the interior perimeter, you will find the Pub area with beer on draft, juices and snacks.

The British Airways Elemis Spa at JFK

Years ago, I lucked out and was able to use the BA Arrivals lounge in Heathrow to experience a complimentary spa treatment only because I was on the first plane to land and arrive at the lounge. All the visits after that they were booked up. British Airways has offered free spa treatments to arriving and departing passengers in Heathrow and in JFK it is offered to departing passengers.  For First Class flyers you can pre-book up to 28 days in advance, for the rest of the lounge guests, it is first come, first served.  Treatments last just 15 minutes but can really make a difference pre/post flight.

Elemis Travel Spa at the BA Lounge JFK

Since my niece was only eleven at the time of our first visit, I wasn’t able to use the Elemis Spa and leave her alone. This time, I could definitely leave Mom alone as she was enjoying all the free food, drink and Wi-Fi.  I walked to the other side of the lounge to inquire about appointments and there were two left (the last of the night) so I booked Mom & me for chair massages.

I walked back to Mom who was comfortable enjoying her first luxury lounge experience and said “time for our spa treatments, let’s go”.  She looked at me and without questioning said “ok”.  This was the start of the luxury treatment from British Airways on our trip (we would visit the T5 Concorde Room on the way home).

Our massage therapists were both male (if that’s a problem for you let the desk know when inquiring) and the massage treatments would be in massage chairs with clothes on.  If you think that’s a deterrent from a “real massage” you would be mistaken. You have a few choices when booking – Calm, Serenity, Energise, Rebalance treatments which are listed and noted face up or face down.  You will need to sign a release form as with any spa treatment.

Elemis Spa at British Airways JFK lounge

I told my therapist that I usually do sports massage and that my neck & shoulders prevent any massage from being relaxing.  He started with asking me for my aromatherapy preference for my face down treatment and then for the next fifteen minutes, he worked out (best he could with limited time) the knots in my neck & shoulders and put on an icy hot type of gel on my neck once he was done.  Mom chose the face up massage and sat in a massage chair the entire time which her therapist was able to provide a relaxing treatment.  Both gave the soft sell on Elemis products but didn’t push as I said we were limited to 100 ml as we had connecting flight at Heathrow.  The spa has products for sale to anyone interested. We tipped our therapists and were ready for our flight to London (connecting to Paris) collapsing into the nearest comfy chair trying not to fall asleep as we were both so relaxed from the massage treatments.

BA Lounge JFK seating area

Final Thoughts – BA Lounge JFK

I’m not a fan of JFK airport as it is old and the gates cramped but relaxing at the British Airways Lounge JFK before the flight does make it less stressful.  With the plethora of food and drink options, you won’t go hungry.  With the spa treatments, you can definitely add a bit of luxury and relaxation before your journey begins.  It is a nice way to spend a few hours before your flight.  Mom loved it and she had no idea what was next, namely a Club World flatbed seat with a return on First Class and the British Airways Concorde Room at Heathrow.  For now, she was happy just like my niece before her traveling and relaxing in style at the airport.  Now that she knows about airline lounges, how will she ever go back to waiting at the gate for a coach flight?
