W hen asked to envision a cruise, chances are you might summon images of kids wailing down waterslides, dripping in ice cream and building sandcastles, typically what you see in the many candy-colored ads from mega cruise ships. But those are far from the only cruise options out there for grown-ups who want to get away from it all. The best cruises for adults cater to adult guests with high-brow luxuries or dedicated spaces—and some even don’t allow kids on board, period.

Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere of like-minded (and aged) travelers or simply need a little time away from your own kiddos, there are several excellent cruises out there that provide a more mature, yet still fun, experience. Below, we’ve selected the adults-only cruise lines for 2024 that will ensure that everyone onboard is old enough to vote, as well as adults-focused sailings that are guaranteed to make you the center of attention—at least while you’re on vacation.

Best Adults-Only Luxury Cruise: Viking Cruises

Best adults-only cruise for older couples: saga cruises, best adults-only cruise for single adults: virgin voyages, best adults-focused luxury cruise: regent seven seas cruises, best adults-focused all-inclusive cruise: seabourn cruise line, best adults-focused cruise for younger adults: norwegian cruise line, best adults-focused cruise for parents who want alone time: windstar cruises.

Viking Octantis Library

Viking Cruises

Minimum Age Required : 18
Caters to : Couples 40+
Destinations : Europe; Caribbean; Asia; Australia; Antarctica; Arctic; world voyages
All-Star Amenities : Industry-leading Nordic Spa, free for all guests; beer and wine at lunch and dinner; all dining options complimentary; included tour in each port; free Wi-Fi; stunning Scandinavian design

Viking is the pioneer of comfortable, adult-only cruising for the modern traveler. In the past 25 years, the company has expanded from a river cruise line primarily based in Europe to one of the largest river fleets in the industry; an award-winning oceangoing cruise line that crisscrosses the globe; and expedition ships that can navigate to the North and South Poles. The breadth of Viking’s destinations and cruise styles is nearly unmatched, but its decision to accommodate a kid-free atmosphere positively sets it apart.

In a conscious effort to cater to the “thinking person,” Viking is free of casinos and eye-catching amusements, instead focusing on guests’ enrichment and relaxation. This is especially apparent around each one of Viking’s ocean or expedition ships, outfitted with remarkable libraries as well as planetariums and research facilities, respectively. Touches from years of river cruising, including a free tour option in each port, beer and wine served at meals and a 24/7 coffee and tea station, have migrated over to all ships across the brand. Unique to its ocean and expedition ships is the stylish Nordic Spa, a complimentary thermal suite employing hot and cold rooms and a gorgeous thalassotherapy pool. Unchanged across any ship is the Norwegian cruise company’s heritage, infused into every aspect from its interior design to its spa treatments and selection of aquavit.

Saga Spirit of Discovery

Saga Cruises

Minimum Age Required : 50 (40 for second passengers)
Caters to : Mature cruisers
Destinations : Baltics; British Isles; Canaries; Norway; Iceland/Greenland; Caribbean; Americas
All-Star Amenities : All balcony cabins; included thermal suite; included gratuities; free Wi-Fi; all meals and drinks, including premium spirits; travel insurance; private chauffeur transfers (within UK)

If you’d really rather weed out any travel companions not even close to retirement, hop across the pond for a cruise vacation with Saga. This British company serves the needs of the 50-plus community, from insurance to all-inclusive holidays and cruises. Specializing in small-ship voyages, Saga Cruises offers itineraries aboard two 987-passenger ocean vessels as well as a handful of river ships—some owned and some chartered. The line is very inclusive, offering alcohol, tours, tips and more bundled into the price (just be aware that it will be listed in pounds). Saga is so confident you’ll love your first cruise with them that they offer a money-back guarantee. However, the hook for North Americans is that every ocean departure leaves from the UK.

With a focus on European itineraries, Saga invites older couples looking for a laidback voyage to depart from either Portsmouth or Dover, bound for the fjords of Iceland or the sunshine of the Canary Islands. Special departures include a 15-night March sailing through Norway to view the northern lights; a 30-night venture exploring Africa’s Atlantic Coast; and a 28-night transatlantic that then sails along the East Coast of Canada and New England to take in the fall foliage. Most Saga cruises are at least 12 to 14 nights, so expect to find a mature crowd who has likely already left the workforce.

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages

Caters to : Young at heart
Destinations : Caribbean (with stop at private port in Bimini); Europe; South Pacific; Transatlantic
All-Star Amenities : All 20+ dining venues included; complimentary fitness classes; free Wi-Fi; included tips; extensive nightlife and entertainment options, free of charge

In keeping with its unconventional and ever-evolving brand identity, Virgin Voyages approaches its decision to leave the kids at home with tongue firmly in cheek. One commercial features children looking forlornly out of rain-streaked windows and singing sadly about their parents cruising without them. It’s all in good fun, of course, with an onboard atmosphere that is intentionally a little naughty and not suitable for young families. It’s in this welcoming, anything-goes environment that solo cruisers will thrive, with ample opportunities to mingle—or not.

Virgin is not all-inclusive, but it’s made smart decisions about what is on offer, from fitness classes like yoga, boxing or spin to the ability to pop into any dining venue across the ship at any time. With no set seatings and a penchant for after-hours dance parties and burlesque shows, the cruising vibe is flexible and caters to singles and friend groups rolling out of bed to brunch or shuffling up to the 24-hour diner at dawn before rolling into bed. Nearly every short cruise from Miami includes a full day at the Beach Club at Bimini, the cruise line’s private port where pool parties and evening bonfires remind Virgin’s “sailors” they’re officially out of office and not in a rush to get back onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas

Perks for Adults : Hefty price tag keeps younger cruisers to a minimum; alcohol included, plus in-room mini-bar; fine dining for mature palates; longer itineraries with free land programs; Culinary Arts Kitchen
Destinations : Alaska; Europe; Bermuda; Asia; Australia/New Zealand; South America; world cruises
All-Star Amenities : Free airfare; complimentary one-night, pre-cruise hotel stay; free shore excursions; unlimited Wi-Fi; well-appointed suites; included valet laundry service

Children are welcome onboard Regent Seven Seas, but primarily on select voyages to Alaska or Europe in the summer months. It’s not complicated to choose a far-flung or multi-week itinerary that will whittle down the chances of children from slim to none, like a 21-night December departure from Dubai to Singapore. Regent’s Grand Voyages aren’t quite world cruises, but span about two months sailing some of the world’s most coveted ports of call, including a 67-night circumvention of South America round trip from Miami or 70 nights following the Spice Route from Auckland to Athens. Sumptuous suites include the 4,000-plus square-foot Regent Suite, priced at $11,000 per night, with exclusive features like an in-suite spa and complimentary treatments.

On the self-proclaimed “world’s most luxurious cruise line,” the flourishes you’ll find are intended to impress the adults in charge of the purse strings: Carrera marble, Versace place settings, a $90,000 Savoir mattress and 158 crystal chandeliers on Seven Seas Explorer alone. It’s an elevated luxury cruising experience better suited to—and appreciated by—well-traveled and well-heeled older adults. Among these delights are the wining and dining that guests can find onboard, including the epicurean classes held in the Culinary Arts Center, located on half of the fleet’s ships.

Seabourn Venture

Seabourn Cruise Line

Perks for Adults : Curated “Seabourn Moments” like Caviar in the Surf; in-suite cocktail parties arranged by your suite attendant; signature toiletries by Molton Brown; premium spirits and fine wines; Thomas Keller restaurant; Seabourn Conversations enrichment series with high-profile guest lecturers
Destinations : Amazon; Northwest Passage; Alaska; Europe; Australia (including the Kimberley); South Pacific; Panama Canal; Antarctica and South Georgia; world cruises
All-Star Amenities : High crew-to-guest ratio; all oceanfront suites; included gratuities; unlimited Wi-Fi; spa and wellness program designed by Dr. Andrew Weil

Seabourn has thought of everything when it comes to pampering its guests, from partnerships with Thomas Keller, the Michelin-starred chef of The French Laundry, to an experience noshing on Champagne and caviar from a floating bar. It’s unlikely, however, that anyone’s kids would be impressed by these offerings, let alone the upscale atmosphere of Seabourn’s intimate ships. Children are allowed to sail on Seabourn, but with no kids’ clubs or activities beyond the likes of lectures and afternoon tea, it’s not the cruise line to anticipate piles of school kids during spring break.

Instead, even established travelers might find some of Seabourn’s itineraries to be impressive, especially sailed by its expedition arm. Focusing on the ends of the earth, Seabourn expedition cruises reach extremes like East Greenland, the Northwest Passage, Antarctica and the wild Kimberley region of Australia. While some of these voyages are a manageable 10 or 15 days, the focus is on the history and exploration of the destination and not as much focus on fun in the sun. The 2024 world cruise departs Los Angeles for 145 days to 28 countries. Seabourn passengers can pass the time onboard with an espresso or martini at any of the onboard bars or lounges or arrange for an indulgent ensuite bubble bath—rubber ducky not included.

NCL Cruise Line, Pride of America, Na Pali Coast, Kauai, Hawaii

Norwegian Cruise Line

Perks for Adults : Choice sun decks for the over-18 crowd; studio cabins for solo cruisers; Haven complex provides secluded spaces; large fitness centers (must be 16+); casinos (must be 18+); late-night entertainment like Howl at the Moon piano bar plus cocktail lounges and wine bars aplenty
Destinations : Alaska; Bahamas; Caribbean; Europe; Canada/New England; Hawaii; South Pacific
All-Star Amenities : Shows plucked straight from Broadway and West End included in fare; adult-focused restaurants including Onda by Scarpetta and Le Bistro; deck parties; waterfront dining on select ships

Sure, Norwegian Cruise Line has won a ton of accolades for its family-friendly cruising. And chances are, you will probably spot quite a few kids throughout your sailing (especially depending on when and where you sail). However, cruisers in their 20s and 30s who aren’t ready to hang up their party hats will still find plenty of opportunities to escape screaming tots across Norwegian’s fleet of 19 ships. The entertainment and nightlife options alone make it a great fit for young adults, and the cruise line’s many cabin categories—including rooms designed for single adults—accommodate most cruising styles.

While the Haven “ship within a ship” complex isn’t an adults-only space (families who can afford it flock here), the additional amenities of a dedicated bar, lounge restaurant and sun deck make it an attractive option for holidaymakers seeking R&R away from the masses. Norwegian also offers not one but three sun decks solely for adults (not counting the Haven, if you’ve paid to upgrade to a suite there). Spice H2O is a complimentary adults-only sun deck on select ships that becomes an open-air dance club by night. The Vibe Beach Club will cost you extra, but includes spacious hot tubs, chilled towels and a full-service bar, plus the ability to rent a private cabana. Posh Beach Club is featured on Norwegian Epic for a fee, but free to Haven guests.

Windstar Star Pride

Windstar Cruises

Perks for Adults : Intimate ship atmosphere (less than 350 guests); partnership with James Beard Foundation; culinary shore excursions; romance packages; themed cruises including Monaco Grand Prix
Destinations : Tahiti; Australia/New Zealand; Caribbean; Italy; Middle East; Iceland; Alaska
All-Star Amenities : Watersports platform with use of kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear; yachts visit off-the-beaten-path ports of call; alfresco Candles restaurant romantic dinner option

If you’re looking for a hideout from the bells and whistles of kid-centric cruise ships, Windstar cruises offers yachts and sailing vessels designed to take you into quiet coves and tucked-away destinations. A minimum age requirement of 8 years old eliminates the chances of a crying baby onboard. Parents who are looking for an adult-focused cruise will enjoy the small-ship romance of Windstar and its exotic itineraries. Seek out the idyllic waters of Tahiti from Papeete or uncover the ancient Holy Lands, with sailings like a 16-night voyage from Istanbul to Haifa.

Foodies will salivate over the chance to book a James Beard-themed cruise, exploring the flavors of regions like Greece; France and Spain; Japan; and the Persian Gulf. Each sailing features demos and dinners with a chef from the James Beard Foundation as well as market visits, tastings and recipes, allowing parents to feel miles from making dinner for picky eaters.

About Brittany Chrusciel, Your Adults-Only Cruise Guide

I have been covering the cruise and travel industry across oceans, lakes, rivers and expeditions for more than a decade. Some of my favorite things to do on cruises is to dive into the ports and destinations visited for a taste of local culture. To date, I have been on over 50 cruises and have had the privilege of sailing some of the world's most scenic waterways, from Portugal's Douro River and the Galapagos Islands to Alaska and Arctic Svalbard. When I’m not at sea, I can be found (still by the sea) in my hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Not in the Mood to Cruise With Kids? These Adult Sailings Are Totally (or Mostly) Kid-Free

From adults-only cruise lines to itineraries geared specifically to adults, on these cruises you won’t see many or any little ones..

Whether you have kids or grandkids or not, whether you love kids or don’t, sometimes there is just something extremely appealing about the idea of a relaxing cruise vacation minus the youngsters. That’s where adults-only cruises come in.

Back in the late 1990s when Torstein Hagen created Viking River Cruises , now by far Europe’s largest river cruise operator, it was purposely designed for adults with no kids allowed onboard . That philosophy stands as the company has moved into ocean cruises and expedition ships .

Likewise, when British billionaire Richard Branson launched the first ship of his Virgin Voyages cruise brand two years ago, it was with no one under age 18 allowed onboard. The cruise line later riffed on the subject with ads showing kids very displeased that they couldn’t get in on the fun with grownups.

While there are no other major cruise lines that outright ban the under-18 set, there are ways travelers can lessen the chances there will be many or any children on their cruise.

If you really want to avoid kids, don’t cruise during a school break period (such as spring break, summer, or winter holidays), pick an itinerary for more than two weeks (length being a deterrent to the family crowd— world cruise , anyone?), or look toward an ultra-luxurious cruise or one that involves an expensive airfare—not everyone wants to splurge on an upscale experience for their progeny.

Also keep in mind the smaller the ship—and fewer onboard experiences for kids (such as kids clubs and big water slides)—the greater the chance youngsters won’t be onboard. Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruises.

Whether you cruise with Viking on one of the company’s many 190-passenger river cruise vessels in Europe, on the line’s 930-passenger ocean cruise ships that sail around the world, or on one of its two 378-passenger expedition ships, you’ll be treated to a fine-tuned cruising experience that is geared strictly to adults. You need to be age 18 and up to get onboard to enjoy the many perks covered in the all-inclusive fares. Those perks consist of shore excursions in every port, free wine and beer, all meals (including numerous restaurant experiences and nightly seafood buffets), engaging lectures hosted by historians and other experts, and Nordic spas complete with hot sauna, steam room, and a chilly snow grotto.

Virgin Voyages

Adult-only cruises offered by Virgin Voyages take place on three 2,770-passenger ships (a fourth is set to debut in December 2023) that sail the Caribbean, Europe, and the South Pacific. The onboard atmosphere is edgy, cheeky, full of subtle—and not so subtle—sexual innuendo, and fun done in an inclusive, adult way unlike anything the cruise industry has ever seen before . Expect lots of day drinking, lively nighttime parties and entertainment, an onboard tattoo parlor, and indulgent food, including an over-the-top molecular dining experience and the “Lick Me Till . . . Ice Cream” shop (for no extra charge)—in between trips to the wellness retreat with a mud room and ’80s-style aerobics classes for the full detox and retox Virgin experience.

4-night Fire & Sunset Soirée sailing , embarks Miami for Key West and then Virgin’s private Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas, from $1,606 for two.

Azamara Cruises

This upscale line with four small ships does not restrict kids but tends to attract well-traveled couples age 50 and up who like the idea of seeing the world from the vantage point of a floating boutique hotel. The onboard atmosphere on Azamara sailings is both convivial and sophisticated, on ships that carry a maximum of 704 guests. The vessels feature a library with faux fireplace, an upscale steakhouse for an elevated dining experience, and a “living room” for drinking and socializing.

Itineraries are focused on maximizing time in port, with cultural immersion including small group shore excursions and “AzAmazing” experiences where, for instance, you and other guests might be treated to complimentary private acrobatics show in Monaco. Special golf cruises with PerryGolf include play at such prestigious courses as Ireland’s Royal Portrush.

9-night Croatia Intensive Voyage on the 690-passenger Azamara Quest, from $3,516 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

With a fleet of 490- to 750-passenger ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the most expensive cruise lines out there and touts that it is “the world’s most luxurious cruise line”—a status it gets by, for instance, outfitting its latest ships with Carrara marble details, crystal chandeliers, over-the-top suites, and multi-million-dollar art collections. Fares include a broad choice of shore excursions such as a mud bath experience in Cartagena, Spain, premium wine and spirits, and business-class international airfare. While the line does not ban kids—and in fact, encourages families at holidays and on summer cruises in Alaska—not everyone wants to pay top dollar for experiences that may go over kids’ heads.

Silversea Cruises

With its sleek ships, a focus on cuisine and drink as a cultural experience, butlers that pamper all guests, and an overall ultra-luxury ambience, Silversea is a favorite of well-heeled adult travelers. Grandparents may bring a multigenerational group onboard for a holiday or summertime sailing (the 596-passenger Silver Muse is the only Silversea ship with a children’s playroom), but with air-inclusive fares that start at around $800 a day, and no discounts for kids, you’re unlikely to have your pool time interrupted by shouts of “Marco Polo.” Rather, you’re more likely to hear someone call an attendant over for more champagne and a side of caviar, both complimentary and available 24/7.

The Best Cruise Lines For Adults & Couples

Are you a couple looking for the best cruise line for your vacation? There’s a big difference in cruising when its just adults versus setting sail with an entire family… and it’s more than just wondering if the ship has waterslides for the kiddos.

In fact, most adults and couples looking for a cruise want something completely different than those family cruisers.

Of course, that means adult couples looking for the perfect cruise need to take a hard look at a number of things to determine which line is best for them. From the ship’s atmosphere to your other passengers, there are a number of things that can have an impact on your enjoyment.

For most people, we suggest thinking about all of the following when picking the right cruise line for their trip…

In This Article...

Things to Consider for Adult & Couple Cruises

best american cruise lines for adults

Having Adults-Only Space : Yes, there are adult-focused cruise lines. But before you simply book one of those, know that they tend to be more expensive than mass market lines. As well, they don’t have near the number of ships or departure ports as larger lines that also welcome families.

In other words, unless you have no problem flying to a port and have a flexible schedule, adult-focused lines might be out of the question.

That’s why it’s smart to instead focus on ships that have appealing adults-only areas. These days most ships have them, but they can vary widely. For instance, on many Royal Caribbean ships there is a Solarium area that is a covered pool designed only for adults. That’s appealing to some, but if you want something that’s more open air, then you might like Carnival’s Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. This is open-air (allowing you to get some sun) with hot tubs and private seating. However, there is often no pool.

In other words, before you book your trip, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons of any adults-only area the ship may have.

Ship Atmosphere : Just like any hotel, every cruise line has a different atmosphere. Some are fun and outgoing while others are more reserved and stately. It goes without saying that matching up the atmosphere of the cruise line with what you’re looking for in a vacation can make a major impact on your enjoyment.

So how are you supposed to know what a cruise line’s atmosphere is like? Well, you can certainly get some insight from reviews of cruises, but we suggest something even simpler.

Take a look at any cruise line’s website to get a good idea of the image and atmosphere it tries to project. Are the images of families enjoying themselves? Or maybe it’s of a couple enjoying a glass of wine and a sunset? You can get a good hint of the sort of atmosphere on a ship through these marketing materials.

Things for Adults to Do : Part of the fun of a cruise is that there is typically lots to do on the ship. And each new cruise ship brings along new features on board, whether it be rock climbing walls, or go-kart tracks, or even roller coasters . But for many adults and couples, it can seem like many of these things are solely for families or younger kids. Sure, there can appeal to some adults, but not everyone is interested in the biggest and newest waterslide or similar attraction.

That’s why the best cruise lines and ships for adults come with plenty for grown-ups to do as well, outside of those headline-grabbing new features. Whether it be entertainment and shows on board, or more options for social gatherings on the ship — or the aforementioned adults-only areas, you want to find a cruise line that offers plenty for grown-ups to do… and not just families.

Your Other Passengers : It’s only logical that sailing with other people like you is more fun. It wouldn’t make sense for a young couple looking for a romantic vacation to set sail on a Disney cruise loaded with families that have young kids.

Of course, you can’t control who else is on the ship. And no cruise ship is full of passengers that are all the same. That said, the type of trip you take, the time of year, and the cruise line you sail can have a big influence on who you cruise with.

Trips that are longer in length (one week or more) tend to have an older crowd with fewer families and younger passengers than shorter cruises. Trips that sail when school is in session will have fewer kids than trips during the summer or Spring Break. And luxury cruise lines (Celebrity, Princess, etc.) tend to cater to an older crowd.

All of this said, no couple is the same. That means no one cruise line is perfect for every adult. So instead of suggesting one cruise line for everyone, we’ve offered up our top suggestion based on several different groups of people. Keep in mind that it’s hard to go wrong with any cruise, but these lines represent our top picks for each situation.

Best Cruise Line for a Young and Active Couples

best american cruise lines for adults

Headed out on a honeymoon? Or maybe you are just a younger couple that wants to have a tropical vacation? If so, then your wants in a cruise line are likely very different than some other couples.

If you fall into the young and active group, then we would suggest a trip aboard Royal Caribbean — preferably a larger and newer ship that’s been built in the past ten years.

Why Royal Caribbean? After all, isn’t this considered a family cruise line?

There’s no doubt that the line caters to everyone — families included. But they also offer a lot for younger adults and couples to love. First, there are always a number of active things to do on the ship, from rock climbing to the Flow-Rider standing wave to waterslides and more. If you dread the idea of just having to sit by the pool while at sea, then this is the line for you (although you can certainly do that too).

Furthermore, the adults-only Solarium is a great place to hang out and avoid any kids or families on board. It’s usually covered, so the pool and surrounding area is warm and you don’t have to worry about the outside weather.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere of Royal Caribbean ships is always fun and classy without being too wild nor too stuffy. Your other passengers range everything from families (fewer if you sail during the school year) all the way to older couples. There are also tons of places to eat and drink on the ship — including lots of different types of food for any appetite.

Best Cruise Line For Adults Wanting a Real “Adult” Experience

best american cruise lines for adults

Virgin Voyages burst on the scene a couple of years  ago in a big way… and for good reason. First and foremost, Virgin is an adults-only cruise line. So if you’re wanting a cruise that is focused solely on adults, then this is your best bet.

Being adults-only, the cruise line can do things that just aren’t possible on a traditional cruise line. That includes everything from shows with cabaret-styled performances to areas where you can actually sunbathe topless. There are yoga classes, hammocks on the balcony, and some killer parties that you just won’t find a match for on mainstream lines.

But it’s also different in other ways. For one, things like gratuities and all food are included in the fare — no buffet is on the ship. Wi-fi is also included. Those headaches that can cause a typical cruise to feel like you have to pay up to get the full experience just aren’t there.

Maybe you’re the sort of person that has been turned off by stereotypical cruise. If so, Virgin Voyages might be just the thing… and not a kid in sight.

Best Cruise Line For Romance

best american cruise lines for adults

Adults looking for a romantic getaway can do worse than setting sail with Princess Cruises . In fact, the line has an entire section of its website dedicated to travelers looking for romance.

So what makes Princess a winner for couples looking to enjoy each other? First, there is more of a focus on romance than with other cruise lines. For example, if you’re looking for fun and romantic, there’s the Love Boat Disco Deck Party. For others, there are cooking demonstrations and wine-tastings. Food is also a big emphasis, with a number of romantic venues to where you feel like you are dining alone… despite being on a ship with plenty of other passengers.

And while there are places to get married on pretty much any cruise ship, Princess also has anniversary, engagement and honeymoon packages (complete with couples spa services and champagne) available.

Furthermore, the more sophisticated atmosphere of Princess ships mean that fewer families set sail on the line.

Best Cruise Line for Older Couples

best american cruise lines for adults

The sort of vacation you want as a couple at 60 years old is likely a little different than what you wanted at 30 years old. In fact, you likely want something a little quieter and more luxurious.

For those more mature couples, we’d suggest looking at a cruise with Celebrity — especially aboard their newest Edge-class ships.

Celebrity is a luxury-level cruise line. The emphasis is on stately design, high-end service, and delicious food. Entertainment is geared toward adults, including shows focused on Motown, cabaret shows, and even croquet and bocce ball on the ship’s Lawn Club. Looking to do shopping? The newest ships features Bulgari and Cartier stores, in addition to others.

If you want even higher-end, then look to The Retreat. This is a “resort within a resort” that is its own private spot with upgraded rooms, private restaurant, it’s own lounge and sun deck. These rooms even come with drink package, wi-fi, and tips included. Along with a team there to make sure you cruise is absolutely perfect.

Put simply, Celebrity isn’t for everyone. If you are traveling with kids, it’s likely you’ll want a different line. But if you are a distinguished couple wanting to enjoy the finer things in life, Celebrity should be exactly what you’re looking for.

Honorable Mention for Adult Cruising

best american cruise lines for adults

One major cruise line deserves a mention for being ideal for adults. It just so happens that in our categories, they were slightly topped by another line each time. Norwegian Cruise Line, however, offers an amazing amount for adults to love — especially when sailing on their newest Prima-class cruise ships.

For one, NCL offers a lot to do on its ships that will keep active couples engaged. You can drive go-karts, take a plunge on some extreme slides, and more. The programming is adult focused, with a number of Broadway shows brought to life on the cruise ship. High-end dining? Of course.

What might appeal heavily to adults is that the cruise line — especially with its newest ships — is focused heavily on style and design. Instead of a cruise ship, new ships look more like a high-end contemporary hotel.

While other lines might take the lead in specific categories, Norwegian is a fantastic all-around option for adults.

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

best american cruise lines for adults

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. Alaska cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

Alaska might be one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it's rugged and can be tricky to get around. Explore the Last Frontier by cruise ship, and you can travel to gold rush towns, glaciers, Alaska Native heritage sites and natural areas brimming with wildlife in comfort, even luxury.

When planning an Alaska cruise, you have many things to consider: when to go for the experience you're anticipating, which cruise line is best suited to your travel style, the best Alaska cruise ports to visit and which shoreside activities you want to prioritize. It's not the kind of trip you want to throw together at the last minute — especially since the best fare deals typically go to organized travelers who book early.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're eager to spot bald eagles in the wild, ride a dog sled atop an ice field or pan for gold after a hearty salmon feast, an Alaska cruise is calling your name. Dive into The Points Guy's Alaska cruise guide for all the planning tips you need for your dream cruise up north.

Why cruise Alaska?

Most people have similar reasons for cruising Alaska. They want to admire its rugged beauty, seek out wildlife (such as eagles, bears and whales) and learn about its Native cultures and gold rush history. It's so far from the rest of the mainland U.S. that it's become a bucket list destination, especially for travelers looking to visit each of the 50 states.

One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road. Plus, many of the state's famous glaciers are best viewed from the sea.

If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation. It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own.

best american cruise lines for adults

A cruise can also make an Alaska trip more affordable. Instead of taking a long and expensive flight to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can choose a cruise that sails round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver (note, you won't be able to tack on a post-cruise land trip to Denali if you do this). Restaurant prices in Alaska can be high, but a cruise bundles meals, accommodations and transportation into one price that, with sales, can be cheaper than you'd think.

When do cruises go to Alaska?

Nearly every major cruise line has a presence in Alaska from May through mid-September, with some offering sailings as early as April or as late as October. The season is short due to weather. Cold temperatures, icy waters and a long snowy season are not conducive to early spring and late fall cruises.

Alaska cruise weather can be chilly (in the 40s to 50s) first thing in the morning and at night. However, if it's a sunny summer day, temperatures can shoot into the 70s and even low 80s. It also rains a lot in Alaska; it's drier in the spring than in the summer.

When you want to go will depend on which activities you want to do, how you feel about cool weather and rain, and the price. Cruises at the beginning (April and May) and end (September and October) of Alaska's cruise season are generally a bit cheaper than those in June, July and August.

Best Alaska itineraries

Where do Alaska cruises even go? Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage.

Learn more about the best Alaska cruise itineraries for your next vacation.

Inside Passage

The Inside Passage is the most popular Alaska cruise route. Weeklong itineraries generally embark in either Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia — though some itineraries originate in Juneau. A few lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line, offer 10-night Inside Passage cruises from Seattle or Vancouver.

Glacial ice carved this passageway long ago, and today, cruise ships and fishing vessels thread their way through the islets and channels to see some of the most spectacular natural sights in the world.

You'll find magnificent mountains (often snowcapped, even in the summertime), lush forests, waterfalls, fjords and calving glaciers. If it's marine life you've come to see, you'll find it in abundance, from whales and dolphins to sea lions and harbor seals. On land, you'll likely spy bears and Dall sheep while eagles, puffins and a host of seabirds circle above.

best american cruise lines for adults

Many people trek to Alaska to commune with nature, but there's also history here that you shouldn't overlook. Shore excursions and onboard lectures will explain the cultures of the Indigenous peoples of Alaska, as well as more recent inhabitants from the Russian community in Sitka and the fortune-seekers who moved to Skagway during the Klondike gold rush in the late 1890s.

Popular Inside Passage ports of call include Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines and Skagway. Most cruises will visit three or four ports of call.

Additionally, you'll have one day spent cruising the Inside Passage and one focused on "scenic cruising," where you can enjoy the landscapes but won't go ashore. This is not nearly as boring as you might think since you'll see incredible sights like Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve or Hubbard Glacier .

One nice thing about the Inside Passage is how calm the water is because you're sailing between land masses. If you worry about seasickness, an Inside Passage trip is the best Alaska cruise itinerary versus a sailing where your ship transits rougher, open waters.

Gulf of Alaska

If you book a weeklong Gulf of Alaska voyage, you'll also enjoy exploring parts of the Inside Passage and its ports that could include a mix of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point.

You'll have up to two days of scenic cruising, in addition to sailing the Inside Passage. Because Gulf of Alaska cruises sail farther north, scenic destinations might include College Fjord, in addition to Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.

best american cruise lines for adults

Generally, these one-way sailings travel from Seward or Whittier (the cruise ports closest to Anchorage) to Vancouver (or vice versa). Most itineraries are seven nights, but you'll find a handful that are longer.

For these itineraries, you'll need to fly into or out of Anchorage and take a train or bus to/from the cruise departure ports, which can take an hour or two. You can book the transportation on your own or through your cruise line.

Gulf of Alaska sailings — especially those in late August and September — can encounter rough seas in the gulf portion of the voyage. Be prepared if you're particularly prone to seasickness.

Related: One-way Alaska cruises vs. round-trip: Which is best?

Longer sailings from the West Coast

Finally, you'll find some round-trip San Francisco itineraries — usually 10 or 11 nights long — as well as longer sailings between San Francisco and Vancouver. These cruises are best suited to travelers who love days at sea.

On a 10-night cruise, you'll have four sea days (for example, two days from San Francisco to Juneau) plus a day of scenic cruising at a spot like Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Endicott Arm, Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park. The waters before you enter the Inside Passage can be calm, rough or anything in between, depending on when you go.

Ports on these longer sailings might include Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point and Victoria, British Columbia.

You can also find one-way repositioning cruises between Southern California ports (Los Angeles and San Diego) and Vancouver at the beginning or end of a ship's Alaska cruise season.

Cruisetours

Cruise lines understand that not all of Alaska's best sights lie along the coast. Denali National Park and the city of Fairbanks are well inland. And some coastal highlights, like the Kenai Peninsula, aren't typically visited on a seven-night cruise. So the cruise lines created their own "cruisetours": vacations that combine a weeklong cruise with a two- to seven-night bus tour.

best american cruise lines for adults

On a cruisetour, you'll sail on a one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise, so your cruise starts or ends in Alaska. Depending on the tour itinerary you choose, you might visit Seward and the Kenai Peninsula, Alyeska, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Fairbanks — as well as spend one to three nights in Denali National Park.

Some lines also offer Alaska cruisetours that venture into Canada's Yukon, including a few Holland America tours that combine half a cruise with a cruisetour that starts or ends in Skagway.

Your tour might include a ride on the scenic Alaska Railroad . Some activities are included in the cost of the cruisetour; other outings can be booked like shore excursions, depending on your interest and budget. If you're hoping to see the northern lights, booking a cruisetour in September might be your best bet to see the aurora on a cruise vacation.

Best Alaska cruise lines

Most big-ship and luxury cruise lines send at least one cruise ship to Alaska every summer. Some of the best Alaska cruise lines are Holland America and Princess Cruises because they have especially long histories in the region and offer cruises, as well as cruise and land tour combinations, on multiple ships each season.

If you want a more active trip in less touristed areas, a great choice would be a small-ship expedition line, including Alaska specialists such as Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures.

Ships in all price ranges sail a variety of itineraries, so don't let budget stop you from visiting. If luxury is what you're after, you can find lines that will go overboard pampering you on your journey north.

Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean all have extensive kids clubs aboard their ships that cater to all ages, from babies to teens. Active travelers might prefer expedition-style voyages on smaller ships that include more time for adventurous activities, such as hiking in the Tongass National Forest, wildlife and glacier viewing from Zodiac rafts or kayaks, or even overnight camping. These ships often feature complimentary shore excursions, kayaks and bikes for guest use and onboard scientists and naturalists.

If you've got active teens who have an interest in nature and the environment, an expedition voyage could be exactly what will keep them engaged and off their devices. Just expect the majority of your shipmates to be older adults.

Look to UnCruise Adventures, Alaskan Dream Cruises, Hurtigruten and Lindblad Expeditions for the best adventure cruises.

Best for multigenerational groups

Sailing with grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and kids? Try Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Princess Cruises. These cruise lines, especially on their newer ships, offer something for everyone — as well as a higher caliber of onboard dining than on the cheapest cruises.

Kids can hang out in the youth lounges while parents hit the spa or try a wine-tasting class. Everyone can come back together for dinner and evening entertainment or onboard activities suitable for all ages.

Best for couples and big celebrations

The luxury cruise lines are your best bet if you're a couple and enjoy spacious suites, gourmet food, pampering (many luxe lines hire butlers to cater to every passenger) and the opportunity to meet other like-minded cruisers. The personalized service and all-inclusive nature of luxury voyages might also be attractive to anyone celebrating a milestone, such as an anniversary, big birthday or retirement.

Look at Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Silversea Cruises and Viking.

Wildlife tours are available in every port. Hop a bus, kayak, boat or plane to look for bears, eagles, whales, sea otters and other wildlife. Note that moose don't regularly show up in the Inside Passage; you'll need to head farther north to find them.

Book a fishing trip to try your hand at catching salmon or halibut, or go out crab fishing for a glimpse into that type of work.

Active travelers can explore Alaska by sea kayak or canoe, hike on glaciers and through rainforests, zip line, bike, ride an ATV and even snorkel (you'll need a dry suit). You can even opt for a round of golf at the course in Haines.

In Alaska, sightseeing doesn't only take place on the ground. Floatplane and helicopter tours take you around scenic areas like Misty Fjords or land you on a glacier, perhaps for a dog-sledding or hiking adventure on the ice. If you prefer to stay grounded, you can find informative trolley tours of ports like Skagway.

Alaska cruises provide plentiful opportunities to learn about Native Alaskan culture. You can get a taste of the gold rush life by trying your hand at panning for gold, attending a salmon bake or visiting a dog-sled camp. A hike on the Chilkoot Trail or ride on the White Pass Railway lets you follow in the footsteps of the miners who came to seek their fortunes. Cap your day by trying out locally brewed craft beers.

Shopping abounds, and you can buy everything from diamond jewelry to T-shirts and other souvenirs. You'll need to look carefully for Alaskan-owned stores selling local handicrafts, but they're worth seeking out.

Best Alaska cruise ports

The best Alaska cruise ports are also the most crowded because no matter which type of itinerary and cruise line you select, you'll likely visit a mix of the same ports. The immediate port area will be filled with tourist shops and eateries. If you want to see nature at its finest, you must book a tour or venture farther afield.

If you want to see some of Alaska's most rustic and charming villages or stick to wild places, book a voyage with a line like Alaskan Dream Cruises or UnCruise to visit destinations like Baranof Island, Chichagof Island, Petersburg and Wrangell.

Ketchikan is known for three things: Native Alaskan (Tlingit) totem poles, Misty Fjords National Monument and the city's distinction as the Salmon Capital of the World. The town has more standing totem poles than anywhere else in the state; see them at the Saxman Native Village and the Totem Heritage Center. Access the Misty Fjords by kayak, floatplane or scenic cruise. Fishing excursions are plentiful here, too.

Ketchikan is where folks go to see the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, with athletes wielding axes and saws in traditional lumbering activities. It is also the jumping-off point for a Bering Sea crab fishing tour.

Alaska's capital city is interesting because no road leads from here to the rest of the state. It's located at the base of Mount Juneau, and you can only get there via boat or small plane — even residents have to bring their cars to Juneau via ferry. Home to Mendenhall Glacier, this is a popular port for hikes by, kayak tours to and helicopter landings on the glacier.

For a view of the city and cruise port, take a ride in the sky on the Mount Roberts Tramway. Various wildlife-viewing trips (whale, bears and more) and visits to dog-sled camps and salmon bakes leave from Juneau.

If you're interested in Alaska's gold rush history, Skagway — 90 miles northwest of Juneau — is a port you shouldn't miss. In fact, it's the gateway to the Klondike and Dawson mining district in Canada's Yukon territory, where prospectors searched for gold in the late 1890s. The historic district still has a Wild West feel, though that's been a bit commercialized for the modern era. This port can get crowded in summer when several ships can call on the same day.

Skagway is an easy port for independent travelers who want to explore the town or go for a hike on their own. It's most famous as the terminus for the White Pass Railway into the Yukon.

Sitka is as much a working fishing town as it is a tourist destination. Sitka's Russian heritage also sets it apart from other Alaskan ports on your cruise itinerary. See St. Michael's Orthodox Cathedral with its onion dome and the Russian Bishop's House.

Before the Russians came, the Tlingit people settled here. You can learn about their history and culture at the Sitka National Historical Park and Sheldon Jackson Museum of Native Alaskan art. Wildlife enthusiasts might want to visit the Alaska Raptor Center, or go bird- and bear-watching.

The population of Haines remains less than 2,000, according to the United States Census Bureau, and it isn't yet as touristy as some of the other Alaskan ports, such as nearby Skagway. It's known for great fishing (salmon, halibut and trout) and an eagle preserve — because eagles know where the best fish can be found.

Animal lovers and kids tend to enjoy a visit to the Kroschel Center for Orphaned Animals here. For a special tour, go bear-watching at twilight.

Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point is notable among Alaska cruise ports because the area and its attractions are all Native Alaskan-owned. Most port and tour staff hail from Hoonah, Alaska's largest Tlingit village. The port is set on Chichagof Island, which is known for its large bear population. Wildlife lovers have plenty of opportunities to search for whales and eagles here; adventure-seekers won't want to miss the ZipRider, with its course of six zip lines.

Scenic cruising

Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. You'll rarely leave the ship during these sail-bys (unless you happen to be aboard certain expedition, luxury or small ships that offer the chance to get on board a skiff to get closer ... but, even then, you're still viewing these sites from the water).

best american cruise lines for adults

Onboard naturalists generally narrate what you're seeing, so head to the observation lounge (or tune to a broadcast on your in-room television) to learn about some of the top sights featured on scenic cruising days.

Top scenic cruising destinations in Alaska include Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve , Hubbard Glacier, Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Dawes Glacier at Endicott Arm and College Fjord.

When to book an Alaska cruise

The best time to book an Alaska cruise is when a cruise line first opens bookings on that sailing, often more than a year in advance. You'll have your pick of itineraries and cabins — balcony cabins are popular in this scenic destination — and often the best fares.

Because Alaska has such a short season with a limited number of ships and is a dream trip for many, cruises are in high demand and people plan early.

best american cruise lines for adults

If you wait to book, you're not entirely out of luck. Cruise lines often run sales in the fall or in the early months of the year (a period known in the cruise industry as " wave season "). You can take advantage of discounted fares, free upgrades or complimentary add-ons, such as Wi-Fi, gratuities, restaurant meals, beverage packages and tours. Some of the most desirable cabins might be sold out; being flexible about your sail date or itinerary can help.

In general, waiting until the last minute is not the best idea, unless you live in Seattle or Vancouver and don't need to book flights. While some less preferred sail dates or cabin categories might be available a few months out, spurring cruise lines to drop rates, you might have trouble finding affordable airfare and pre- or post-cruise hotel accommodations that do not consume your cruise savings.

What to bring on an Alaska cruise

When it comes to packing for an Alaska cruise, your mantra should always be: dress in layers. On the same day, you might be warm in town but chilly on your tour to a glacier. If you plan on hiking, kayaking or riding on a dog sled, you'll need the appropriate activewear.

Definitely pack for rain; consider skipping the umbrella and instead bringing a wide-brimmed waterproof hat, rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof shoes or boots.

This is also the trip for a camera with good telephoto lenses and binoculars. For more on what to bring on an Alaska cruise, check out our Alaska cruise packing list .

Bottom line

An Alaska cruise is a memorable experience. The beauty of the land and its immense history; the thrill of seeing bears, moose and bald eagles; and the mysteries of the surrounding marine life will astound you. It's a trip worth taking the time to plan and doing right — because who knows if or when you'll make it back to the Last Frontier.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. These were my 8 favorite amenities on the world's largest cruise ship.

  • Royal Caribbean invited me to spend three complimentary nights on its new Icon of the Seas  in January.
  • My eight favorite amenities included the waterpark and jazz bar.
  • I've yet to see most of the amenities on my list on other cruise ships.

Insider Today

There's a reason Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship is only operating seven-night sailings .

The 1,196-foot-long, 20-deck Icon of the Seas is packed with bars, restaurants, and things to do. Any shorter of an itinerary, and you might not have time to experience all it has to offer.

If you're a frequent cruiser — especially with Royal Caribbean — amenities like the mini-golf course and water playground may not seem exciting.

But of all the activities the new world's largest cruise ship has to offer, my eight favorites are, for the most part, ones I've yet to see on another vessel.

Take a look at what made the cut.

1. The six-slide waterpark

best american cruise lines for adults

It wouldn't be a roundup of Icon of the Seas' best amenities without a mention of its waterpark.

Plenty of family-friendly cruise ships have waterslides, but few have six — or even one that requires a multi-person raft.

However, if you don't like the feeling of your stomach dropping, I'd advise skipping the 46-foot-tall drop slide.

2. The adult-only suspended infinity pool

best american cruise lines for adults

The 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas has seven pools and nine hot tubs. As a kid-fearing adult, I loved the grown-ups-only suspended infinity pool.

I spent my time there perched at one of its in-water loungers, contently splashing my legs around the water, wondering if I actually hated cruises.

While I would've preferred a quieter atmosphere (the DJ did not, in fact, play smooth jazz), the pool's views, day beds, and lack of screaming children were hard to beat.

3. The Crown’s Edge thrill 'ride'

best american cruise lines for adults

There's no need to grab coffee before harnessing up for the part-zipling, part-agility Crown's Edge course. You'll be jolted awake when the floor drops from beneath your feet, leaving you dangling 154 feet above the ocean before the zipline kicks in.

Unfortunately, it comes with two costs: $49 and a spike of anxiety.

4. The 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Aqua Action!' shows

best american cruise lines for adults

If you hate cruise shows, Icon of the Seas could make you change your mind.

The ship's riff on Broadway-approved "Wizard of Oz" — 16-piece live orchestra and flying bed included — delighted me, a hater of most musicals.

For something less traditional, the semi-circle AquaDome theater hosts a compelling multi-disciplinary swim, dive, and aerial show reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil.

It's the first show-at-sea I've seen with a waterfall and nine-foot-tall robotic arms, and so far, it's one of my favorites.

5. The live jazz bar

best american cruise lines for adults

Ya like jazz? So do I.

Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts. But if you're a jazz fan or looking for a peaceful nightcap, none of these options will top the live music at Lou's Jazz 'n Blues.

6. The customizable Mediterranean-style wrap at the five-stall food hall

best american cruise lines for adults

The mega-ship's food hall wasn't nearly as diverse or exciting as the one on Norwegian Prima .

But compared to the rest of my mediocre meals on Icon of the Seas — including dinner at a specialty restaurant — my complimentary pork pita wrap from the food hall's Mediterranean-inspired stall was admittedly pretty decent.

The Cava -like meal was balanced, succulent, and filling. Ending it with a strawberry nutella crepe from one of the vendors didn't hurt either.

7. The Pearl Café with sweeping ocean views

best american cruise lines for adults

Everyone takes a picture inside the Pearl . But few people know that the best part about the glittering structure isn't what's inside it — it's what's behind it: the Pearl Café.

Admittedly, the food wasn't standout.

But it's 2024. In this era, we don't dine for food. We dine for vibes . And the Pearl Café was definitely "serving" (even with its mediocre sandwiches).

At first glance, I had snubbed the dining and lounge area as a rip-off of a generic airport coffee shop. But during my three days on Icon, I returned to the centrally located space more often than expected. It turns out it's a great place to get some work done.

8. The lounging pods that tower above passerbys

best american cruise lines for adults

Speaking of vibes, if you're looking for a secluded place to drink (as in, not the swim-up pool bar), few will top the Overlook Pods, perched just behind the AquaDome.

If you want to feel like you're drinking in a nest atop a tree, bring your coffee-infused cocktail from nearby Rye and Bean to one of the elevated pods. .

Just don't drink too much. What goes up must come down. And to get down from the pods, you'll have to take the stairs.

The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation

What are the best adults-only cruises — the ones that not only ban kids but cater to grown-up tastes and interests?

You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G.

The list of cruises for adults only is, alas, very short. Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking .

The trend in recent years in cruising is, in fact, more family-focused, with more kids appearing on ships of all types. Indeed, some of the biggest, best-known cruise brands have gone full-bore after the family market , to the extent that the sun-soaked top decks of their ships sometimes can feel more like a scene out of "Daddy Day Care" than a blissful vacation retreat.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Don't despair, though. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises.

Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot.

Virgin Voyages

The much-ballyhooed new line from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has banned children under the age of 18 from its ships. It's part of an effort to create a hipper, more-sophisticated, adult-focused vibe that company leaders think is sorely lacking in the cruise world.

"We have done a ton of research really trying to create a sophisticated experience," Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin said in the days before the line's 2021 debut . "I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that."

Related: I've been on more than 150 cruise ships. Here's what I thought of Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages' first three adults-only cruise ships, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady and sister vessels Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady , cater to grown-ups looking for a decidedly adult sort of fun with such offerings as interactive dance parties and a drag queen performance. It also offers a karaoke lounge with pink-and-purple karaoke rooms and a tattoo parlor (read about how one of our staffers was among the first to get inked on board ).

What you won't find on the three ships (a fourth is due later this year) are waterslides, watery splash zones, teen lounges and all the other family-friendly features that are becoming so common on bigger ships.

To create an adults-only cruise experience, Virgin Voyages took a page from fast-growing Viking 's playbook. Viking's 12-ship ocean cruise division has banned children under the age of 18 since it debuted in 2015. In addition, its 80-ship river cruise division has had a minimum age limit for more than two decades. (Initially, the cut-off was age 12; as of 2019, that jumped to 18, too.)

Not that Virgin and Viking are anything alike. Virgin is designed to appeal to millennials and older travelers who want to party like they are millennials. Viking, by contrast, is the anti-millennial line.

Viking's target market is squarely in the 55-plus bracket. It zeroes in on that demographic with an upscale, destination-focused experience that is heavy on what the industry likes to call "enrichment" — onboard lectures and other learning opportunities. It also emphasizes tours focused on history and culture (with at least one free excursion in each port) and entertainment offerings that veer more toward string quartets than dancers in string bikinis.

"What we're looking to do is try not to be everything for everyone," Viking's executive vice president of marketing, Richard Marnell, told TPG. "We do not have a kids' program. What we have is . . . [an] immersive experience that is best suited for people that are intellectually curious."

P&O Cruises

This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. The line splits the difference between the two segments. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. The other two (Arcadia and Aurora) are reserved exclusively for adults.

Given that more than 95% of the Southampton, England-based cruise line's passengers are British, you'll probably want to be either British yourself or a major Anglophile to consider booking one of the latter two vessels. Sailing with P&O Cruises is a very British experience, something that becomes clear the moment you see its vessels. They feature hulls painted with massive Union Jacks.

In addition, you'll find quintessentially British offerings on board P&O Cruises ships, such as elaborate afternoon teas, quoits on the top deck and restaurant menus designed by chefs big in the United Kingdom, such as Marco Pierre White.

That said, if you're a Princess Cruises fan, you might feel right at home on a P&O Cruises ship. Nestled under the same corporate umbrella, the two brands are longtime sisters that have swapped ships back and forth (though Holland America fans might be interested to know that Arcadia actually shares a ship design with that line's Vista class).

For booking purposes, P&O Cruises considers anyone who will be 18 or older when sailing an adult.

Saga Cruises

Like P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises is a British line that has honed in on the business of offering voyages just for adults. But it goes way beyond what P&O Cruises or any other line does in shunning younger travelers. The minimum age at Saga Cruises isn't 18 or even 21 — it's 50.

That's right — you won't find a single millennial or even that many Generation Xers on board a Saga Cruises ship (at 58, even the oldest members of Generation X only make the cut-off by eight years). You will find a heck of a lot of baby boomers, many of them retired.

Saga Cruises operates just two ocean vessels, sailing exclusively out of the U.K., plus several river ships. Like P&O Cruises, it's a product that is probably best for British travelers or big-time Anglophiles.

Other adult-focused cruises

In addition to lines that ban passengers under the age of 18 outright, a number of cruise operators allow young children but get relatively few of them.

Examples include such upscale lines as Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn , which cater heavily to an older crowd. Small-ship specialist Windstar Cruises allows tweens and teenagers on its six ships, but it doesn't allow any children under the age of 8.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, which sells both ocean and river cruises, traditionally discourages customers from bringing passengers under the age of 12 on vessels except during Christmas holiday sailings.

Also, the longer the cruise, the fewer children you will find. Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults.
