Whether you're a beer snob or an oenophile (look it up), there are plenty of places to learn the craft and imbibe a little along the way.

Bombshell Blonde and Buried Hatchet Stout are just a couple examples of the brews you'll find at  Southern Star Brewing Co.  in Conroe. Production began at Southern Star in 2008 and has been ramping up ever since. The brewery does free tours and tastings each Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A few items such as t-shirts and glasses are also offered for sale. In 2009, Southern Star launched an annual Pro-AM (professional amateur) contest for home brewers. The winning submission's brew gets scaled up to be brewed on Southern Star's system.

Karbach Brewing Co.  is the brainchild of the founders of CR Goodman Distribution Co., the group responsible for bringing labels such as Sierra Nevada, Chimay and Dogfish Head into Texas. In 2008 the partners sold their Texas portfolio to build a brewery of their own. Names like Sympathy for the Lager, Rodeo Clown Double IPA and Weisse Versa Wheat promise to become household names in Texas' growing craft beer movement. Karbach offers tasting tours through the brewery on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays, noon to 3 p.m. The informal setting allows participants to hang out among the tanks as they're guided through the brewing process. Tours are $7.

Saint Arnold Brewing Co. , Texas' oldest craft brewer, took over a 100-year-old warehouse on the edge of Downtown Houston in 2010. That's where Saint Arnold makes 10 different craft brews and shows off its operation to thousands of visitors annually. Guests are able to explore the new biergarten-inspired space, sample brew in the tasting room, get a peek at the tank farm, and even host private events inside the facility. Tours and tastings are offered every Saturday at 11am and weekdays at 3pm. Admission is $7 which includes a logo tasting glass.

No Label Brewing Co.  in Katy has been providing tours since it opened its doors in 2010. The family-owned craft brewery produces a line of ales and lagers with names like El Jefe (a German Hefeweizen) and Pale Horse (an American pale ale). Tours and tastings are held every Saturday except the first one of the month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 for those 21 and up. No Label is also dog and kid friendly. Paying homage to the famous Spindletop gusher which brought about the Texas Oil Boom, Spindletap Brewery is now open and booming with barrels of craft beer. The brewery, about 15 minutes northeast of downtown, features a taproom for guests to grab a seat, sample beer and take in a football game. Ten flat-screen televisions behind the bar and five more around the space means there is not a bad seat in the house.

Houston's Budweiser Tasting Room regularly serves up awesome free concerts, tastings, and even meet and greets with the world-famous Clydesdales. Stop by for one of their authentic beer tours.These eye-opening experiences allow you to follow the journey of making Budweiser from “seed to sip” as well as special visits to the Brew House, Lager Cellar, Packaging Floor and Finishing Cellar. The tours even include a sample directly from a Finishing Tank. Can't pick just one? Explore Houston's beerscape with Fresh Tap Tours. Avoid the hassle of driving and parking, or hailing a cab. Fresh Tap Tours offers a fun and safe way to sample the Houston beer scene, and its landscape, with a guided tour. Texas Beer Bus gives groups the opportunity to go behind the scenes of Houston’s best breweries, wineries, and distilleries, all while enjoying drinks in commemorative souvenir glasses. From the Woodlands to the Bay Area, the VIP tours cover all that Houston has to offer. 

The 100-acre  Messina Hof  estate in Bryan, Texas is home to one of Texas' most recognized wineries. Established in 1977, today the winery and resort (there's a bed & breakfast on site) boasts a full line of award-winning wines, from Riesling to Shiraz. Tours and wine tasting are offered seven days a week. The winery's calendar is also packed with cooking classes, wine appreciation classes, food and wine pairing seminars and winemaker dinners. Guests can stroll the picturesque grounds, have a bite to eat at the restaurant and even stay the night. The $10 tour price includes sampling of four wines.

What started in 1969 with an anniversary gift of grapevines from Gladys Haak to her husband Raymond has grown to a full-fledged enterprise. Today thousands of people turn out annually for a tour of Haak Winery . In 2000, Haak produced its first commercial wines and has since expanded to more than a dozen different varieties, from dessert wines such as Madeira to refined whites like the dry Blanc du Bois. Several Haak vintages have won major awards at international wine events. Tours ($5, which includes four tastings) occur daily, but calling ahead is recommended.

Yellow Rose Distilling invites Houstonians and visitors to toast a milestone: the first legal distillery in the city limits. The10,000-square-foot facility with tasting room is located adjacent to Uptown and Memorial Park, just north of Interstate 10. Founded in 2010, Yellow Rose Distilling locally produces four award-winning varieties of whiskey and a recently-launched vodka.  The distillery is open every Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.  The $7 admission price includes a sampling. One might not think of Texas as the location of a rum distillery. But the founders of  Railean Distillery  in San Leon, along the shores of Galveston Bay, have made a point of putting Texas rum on the map. Coined "the original Texas rum" Railean is an award-winner that comes in both a white and reserve, dark version. Each tour includes a discussion on the process, from sugarcane to fermentation and finally distilling. Tours and tastings are free but by reservation only, so call ahead.

• The beer : Primarily the heavy, high-ABV stuff like imperial stouts Smoglifter, Vulgar Display of Power, and Hammer Smashed Face.
• The extras : Arcade games; a jukebox that plays all metal, all the time; regular concerts and bad-movie nights; a Christmas celebration honoring late Motörhead lead singer Lemmy Kilmister.
• Best for : Fearless drinkers.

Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co.

Sawyer Yards | Daily

• The beer: While we think other places have taken the baton of “most creative brewery” in the city, BuffBrew still specializes in off-kilter selections like a bananas foster ale, a light and bright (not dark and rich) coffee beer, and stalwart Creamsicle—what you think it is. Our favorite: Smoke on the Bayou, made with malt smoked at local pits like Blood Bros. BBQ and Gatlin’s BBQ.
• The extras: In 2019, it opened a three-story haven for beer nerds with standout pizzas and entrees from chef Arash Kharat, multiple bars, and a stellar rooftop party area with stunning skyline views.
• Best for: Your first Houston beer tour.

• The beer : Generally lighter (cream ale, hefeweizen), with Houston-centric names, and a roster of collaborations with Houston rappers Bun B, Slim Thug, and Paul Wall. There’s also a tasty Vietnamese coffee porter.
• The extras : Outside food, drink, and seating permitted; the huge beer garden boasts two iconic, larger-than-life sculptures by H-Town’s own David Adickes (his Beatles tribute, and his We ❤️  HOUSTON sign).
• Best for : Newbies.

Eureka Heights Brew Co.

The Heights | Daily

• The beer:  Reliable as ever with offerings like the light and refreshing cream ale Buckle Bunny and easygoing IPA Mini Boss, the Heights stalwart also loves trying new things. For example: Big, boozy, bourbon-barrel beers like Stun Gravy and Nuke the Whales are fun finds.
• The extras:  A great sense of humor. Over Halloween 2019, the brewery transformed into the Duff Brewery to honor The Simpsons .
• Best for:  Your post-softball-game antics.

• The beer : A little bit of everything, so try out a bunch, but the brewery’s been getting into hazier, hoppier fare lately; when it’s available, try the best of those, Galactic Fruitier Pellets.
• The extras : Beanbag toss on the back patio; Thursday-night trivia.
• Best for : Beer geeks in training.

Ingenious Brewing Co.

Humble | Daily

• The beer : This is the most adventurous stuff in Houston . Think smoothie-style beers, big stouts that taste like pastries, and Berliner weisses doused with fruit.
• The extras : Modest kid-friendly lawn; can releases and special events for fans to try new beers.
• Best for : The wild-at-heart.

• The beer : Brewmaster John Holler likes old-school European styles including extra-special bitter beers and Belgian tripels, but he’ll come out with big, hazy, hoppy beers once in a while, like the mango-citrusy Just A Phazy. The Belgian IPA is great, too.
• The extras : Weekend food trucks; Wednesday steak nights.
• Best for : Passport carriers.

Sigma Brewing Co.

East End | Thurs–Mon

• The beer : No-nonsense, hoppy brews like Bonesaw and the Hoarder’s Endowment series.
• The extras : Board games; Nintendo video games; occasional events featuring local “comedy wrestling” troupe Doomsday Wrestling.
• Best for : Hopheads.

Spindletap Brewing Co.

Northside | Thurs–Sun

• The beer : This is the go-to brewery for hoppy, juicy New England IPAs . Juiceton and Diamonds in My Mouth are among the best in the region.
• The extras : Semi-regular events including chili cookoffs, crawfish boils, beer dinners, and paint nights; crispy pies from frequent food truck resident Texzas Wood-Fired Pizza.
• Best for : Haze-chasers.

Saint Arnold Brewing Co.

Fifth Ward | Daily

• The beer : They do it all, from boozy suds aged in bourbon barrels to refreshing standbys like Santo and Amber Ale. Art Car is a workhorse IPA and a go-to for many locals.
• The extras : The 20,000-square-foot beer garden with a great skyline view; outstanding fare from the kitchen. Try the Bishop’s Burger—two juicy Angus patties with cheddar, onion, tomato, arugula, and pickles—perfect with a hoppy beer.
• Best for : Families.  

True Anomaly Brewing

• The beer: A couple NASA staffers opened this brewery in early 2019, announcing a devotion to Belgian ales, wild fermentation, and barrel-aging. Its offerings are awesomely calibrated and complex, but let’s keep it simple: These drinks are bomb. Go for Small Giant, the little Grisette with a big refreshing punch, and power, and Beryl, a beautiful raspberry and red currant sour.
• The extras: Grab a board game from the deep collection of favorites, and pair your pints with pizza from Vinny’s across the street.
• Best for: Time-worn tradition seekers.

Urban South HTX

• The beer: This New Orleans import arrived in Houston in early 2020 promising its own Bayou City beer list, and it hasn’t disappointed. These folks, nabbed from B-52 in Conroe, can do it all: skillful fruited sours, juicy and delicious IPAs, and even crisp pilsners. 
• The extras: Urban South dropped into town with a full line of merchandise including sweet hoodies, tanktops, and t-shirts. Get that beer drip.

Best for: Beer nerds who want what’s in right now.

• The beer : Varies, but tart beers with fruit, hazy IPAs , and creamy stouts are specialties, along with super-creative offerings brewed with cereal and baking spices. We like the Stargazer series of dark beers.
• The extras : Weekly standard trivia nights, monthly themed trivia nights.
• Best for : Diverse palates.

Bakfish Brewing Co.

Pearland | Daily

• The beer : Generally lighter styles like golden ale , blonde, amber, and the stellar I Tell You Wit, a slightly sour witbier that’s perfect for summer afternoons.
• The extras : Regular Pickle & Pints events, during which guests play the life-sized ping pong game pickleball.
• Best for : Southbound travelers. 

City Acre Brewing Co.

Northeast Houston | Weds–Sun

• The beer : Brews with subtle twists , like cilantro-tinged Hitchcock Blonde and crisp Skull Creek Kölsch.
• The extras : A fun outdoor space with a fire pit, gardens, and horseshoes; outstanding eats from chef Rick Kelsay. The Urban Cowboy—with a bacon-infused patty, American cheese, onion rings, and jalapeño ranch dressing—is the best burger at any brewery in the city.
• Best for : Foodies.

Texas Leaguer Brewing Co.

Missouri City | Fri–Sun

• The beer : Named after baseball terms , offerings run the gamut, but the best are Belgian pale ale 6-4-3 and Knuckle Bock. New beers, released on Fridays, are part of the brewery’s “farm system.”
• The extras : With its big projection screen and baseball theme, this is the place to be during Astros games.
• Best for : Sports fans.
