Barbados Travel Guide – Barbados Travel Blog Filled With Ideas

Beautiful views at Cherry Tree Hill, Barbados

This detailed Barbados travel guide has all the information you need to plan a great holiday on the island, including top things to do, restaurants, hotels and plenty more.

Just a few weeks ago I returned from Barbados in the Caribbean . It was my first time on the island, and while I’ve been to a few of the Caribbean islands, I just love how varied they are. They have their own characters, landscapes and traditions.

Is Barbados Worth Visiting?

Barbados is relatively flat compared to others, as its one of the few without a volcanic origin. It’s also famed for its bright turquoise water, paradise beaches and killer rum punch! I mean, just take a look at this gorgeous view over Crane Beach – isn’t it stunning?

Crane Beach, Barbados

A few weeks before visiting, I learned that more Brits travel to the island, than any other nationality. Most visit for the (almost) guaranteed warm weather and fantastic beaches.

If you’re reading through Barbados reviews online, you might find a slightly divided opinion. Some love it so much they go back year after year, while others prefer the less developed / touristy Caribbean islands

Being an adventurer and foodie at heart, I wanted to get beyond the beaches and find out what else this island offers. I wanted to taste the food, see the landscapes and feel the heart beat of this independent nation. From the south coast to the north, Saint Lawrence Gap to Crane Beach, the fun of Crop Over Festival to the rich history of the island, I couldn’t wait to explore in detail.

Bridgetown in Barbados, Caribbean

Fittingly, our trip was designed to appeal to the five senses. So from tasting the local rum, to seeing the incredible underground caves and even hearing Rihanna herself (yes really!) – it’s time for sensory overload in Barbados! So whether you’re looking for adventure, food, culture or relaxation, I’ve got you covered with lots great ideas packed into my Barbados travel blog.

As a quick aside, if you’re still deciding which island to visit, don’t miss my comparison of Barbados vs Antigua !

Best Time To Visit Barbados

If you’re wondering when to visit Barbados, there are a few things to think about. It’s warm all year round in Barbados with temperatures between 23 – 30 Celsius. There’s a wet and dry season across the Caribbean, with December to March being a good time to visit for rain-free sunshine-filled days.

It tends to get busy around Christmas though, so if you can time your visit for out of the key holiday periods, you’ll have a more relaxing experience.

May to October is when rainy season hits the Caribbean, which brings with it heightened humidity too. It’s also important to be aware of hurricane season, from June to November, although tropical storms are more likely to be an issue.

Lots of people rate March to May as a great time to visit. It’s a shoulder season, so crowds are lower, but it’s still lovely and warm.

Wondering when to go to Barbados? How about shoulder season

Things To Do In Barbados For Adventure Lovers

Prepare yourself for some serious fun on this island! You’re about to engage all five senses with these adventures in Barbados…

Snorkelling in Barbados

When we were planning a trip to Barbados, I’d heard the snorkelling was incredible, with numerous opportunities to spot turtles around the south and west of the island. I love that you don’t need to book onto a tour to spot them.

Snorkelling in Antigua, Caribbean

You can just wander out from beaches such as Paynes Bay, Sandy Lane or Folkstone Marine Park and you’re likely to spot a few. For an extra special experience, book onto a catamaran trip and be shown some of the best spots on the island!

Diving in Barbados

My partner plunged deep into the ocean to dive amongst some impressive wrecks. His favourite was the sunken submarine, not far from St Peter’s Bay. Along with plenty of colourful exotic fish (including lion fish), there were a few turtles down there too. Adventure holidays in Barbados are popular, and this is the perfect activity to include in your itinerary!

Animal Flower Cave

I had no clue what animal flowers were (what comes to your mind?!) but they’re a type of small sea anemone which live in the waters of these caves. Right on the northernmost tip of Barbados, this is the rugged Barbados.

As I stood on the cliff edge listening to the crashing waves, took photos of the epic jagged rocks and explored the rough caves carved over hundreds of years – I couldn’t believe this was the same island known for paradise beaches. It’s such a wonderful contrast!

Considering other islands in the Caribbean? Check out these guides to St Kitts , St Martin , Antigua and Cuba . Also, order a copy of the Lonely Planet Barbados guide before you go.

Paddle Boarding in Barbados

One of my favourite adventures of all was hopping on a paddleboard and cruising the shoreline. It was a way to see the coastline and reflect on the beauty of the island. Most hotels on the west coast have a stack of paddle boards and kayaks, and there’s a lovely feeling of liberation as you glide across the turquoise waters.

Island Safari

Woohoo, well wasn’t this a lot of fun…? Until it rained anyway, but let’s forget that part for now!

How long does it take to drive around Barbados? Approximately three hours. Although this island tour doesn’t take you to every spot, it gives you a great overview of what the island is like.

I’d recommend you book this for one of your first days in Barbados, as it gives you an intro to the island’s geography, history and culture, all while showing you some top places to return to later in the week.

Coastline in Barbados, Caribbean

The Barbados tour guides are super enthusiastic, love sharing their home with visitors and are happy to answer all the questions you’ve been dying to ask. They’re also keen to get you away from the east coast with its cruise ships and resorts, and to show you the rugged east and less-developed centre of the island. Trips to Barbados often only give you the glossy view of luxury resorts and high end restaurants, but seeing more of the island left us with a better idea of what life is like here.

Oh and they also ply you with rum punch, which makes the off-road parts even more fun! Check availability and latest prices here.

Harrison’s Cave

Delve deep into the core of Barbados with this interactive tour of Harrison’s Cave. After swotting up on the history and geology of the island, it’s time to board a cute little train to drive around the cathedral-like chambers.

With underground waterfalls, crystal clear pools, and stalagmites and stalactites formed over thousands of years, it’s somewhere you’re guaranteed to engage all five senses.

Things To Do In Barbados For Foodies

Next up, it’s time to smell and taste your way around the island. These Barbados trip ideas are guaranteed to make you hungry!

Mount Gay Rum Tour

It’s a given that any visit to Barbados is going to involve a fair amount of rum. It’s the drink of the island. At most places, you’ll be welcomed with a rum punch, and you’ll soon that there are good ones, and there are REALLY good ones. People have their own recipes.

THE way to truly get into the spirit (!!) is with a trip to Mount Gay . They run tours every hour, which strike just the right balance between informative and fun. And great news, they start with rum punch and end with tastings of three of the distillery’s top sellers.

Check prices for the Mount Gay Rum Tour.

Agapey Chocolate Tour

Your nose will guide you to Agapey – a cute chocolate shop in Bridgetown! This isn’t Willy Wonka style, but they do have a small chocolate factory on site, and it’s certainly worth booking onto a chocolate tour to find out more about the processes and see the machines up and running.

The chocolates filled with Mount Gay were my favourites, and a box of those would make a great present.

Oistins Fish Fry

You guys recommended we add this to our itinerary, and we listened! Every Friday, hundreds of tourists and locals gather in the small fishing village of Oistins for a big old knees up.

The rum punch flows, the seafood stalls serve up mountains of grilled tuna, flying fish, swordfish and more, and as the night wears on, performers take to the stage to throw some shapes to the DJ’s tunes. It was a highlight of our week in Barbados and certainly a way to FEEL the island’s beat!

Restaurants In Barbados

There are plenty of top restaurants on the island. For fine dining, book a table at The Cliff or Cin Cin . For flavoursome cajun shrimp, I loved The Waterfront in Bridgetown.

There was a huge menu, the service was friendly and the location was lovely, overlooking the capital’s marina.

Cajun shrimp and rice at Waterfront Cafe, Barbados

Juma’s in Speightstown is another top choice with a tasty menu (the blackened mahi mahi was delicious!) and a great location overlooking the beach. Décor was eclectic with a beach shack roof and lava lamps dotted around the restaurant – it felt fun with that real holiday vibe!

Blackened fish at Juma's Restaurant, Speightstown, Barbados

Our meal at The Fishpot was one of our favourites, again right on the beach just a little way north of St Peter’s Bay. The seafood was excellent, and we enjoyed big grilled shrimps, and tasty Asian tuna for mains. Any of these would be great at lunch too, especially with those dreamy beach views.

If you’re visiting Barbados as a big group or would like the option to self-cater some of your trip, I’d recommend taking a look at Airbnb. Usually the properties are owned by locals so you can enjoy an authentic experience and ask for lots of expert tips for the area. You can claim £35 / $45 off your first trip by clicking here .

Things To Do In Barbados For Culture Vultures

Gospel breakfast at the crane.

Hearing the voices of a group of gospel singers at breakfast time is a special experience. This is how our Sunday morning began at The Crane Resort – the Caribbean’s oldest continually operating hotel and one of the best places to stay in Barbados.

It’s a standard hotel buffet where you pile your plate high with sausages, bacon, eggs and pancakes, but the ambience is anything but standard. During our visit in December, we enjoyed a few festive numbers along with some gospel classics.

St Nicholas Abbey

Built in 1658, St Nicholas Abbey is a beautifully preserved plantation house. It’s fascinating to see the island’s history through the ages, and walking through the house really is like turning back the clock.

One of my favourite parts of my visit was exploring the forest outside, and even if you don’t fancy adventuring into it, you can enjoy lunch on the terrace overlooking the jungle floor.

Check prices for a tour of St Nicholas Abbey.

Rihanna Drive

When you ay Barbados to many people, they think of Rihanna. She’s an international superstar who well and truly flies the Barbados flag around the world. Our trip to Barbados coincided with the island’s Independence Day which was extra special, as Rihanna’s home street was renamed Rihanna Drive.

It’s already somewhere tourists love to visit, but now there’s even more reason! It was absolutely amazing to see the community turn up to the event, and to hear Rihanna’s pride for where she grew up.

Things To Do In Barbados For Relaxation Seekers

Many people visit the island for a week of R&R. You want to kick back and relax, with a drink in one hand and a book in the other. That’s fine – we all need down time!

Serenity Spa at The Crane

For a treat, book in for a treatment at The Crane, easily one of the most stunning resorts on the island. Located on the south, the cliff top location has incredible views down to Crane Beach with its ferocious waves and soft white sand. The spa is excellent too, and a massage will certainly leave you feeling relaxed.

Seaduced Catamaran Trip

Seaduced catamaran Barbados

This luxury catamaran experience was another highlight. Sailing along the west coast at sunset is stunning enough, but with a cocktail in hand it’s even better! The crew pride themselves in delivering incredible high-end service, from the food and drink to the general ambience – it was all top notch and a wonderful way to see more of the island.

Hunte’s Gardens

Genuinely one of the most relaxing spots in Barbados, Anthony Hunte has created a gorgeous garden up in the lush hills in the middle of the island. Tall palms sit next to colourful orchids while exotic birds fly through the air.

As you explore, you stumble across secret seating areas – places perfect to enjoy the views, the sounds and the scents of nature. When you need a refreshment, head to Mr Hunte’s lodge for a rum tasting or a cold drink, and a chance to chat to the nature-lover responsible for the garden.

Check prices for a tour of Hunte’s Gardens .

Barbados Beaches

I’ve mentioned them already, but the beaches are as good as you’ve heard! Top marks for Crane Beach for its epic landscape, Mullins Beach for being lively and St Peter’s Bay for being nice and quiet. On a bright sunny day, the water is an insanely bright shade of turquoise that looks photoshopped!

Where To Stay In Barbados

If you are looking for your own home away from home,  Top Villas  offer vacation rentals in various locations across the island.

We stayed at Pendry in the north west of Barbados. They have a range of 1, 2 and 3-bed apartments, each with stunning terraces, lounges and full kitchens. The enclosed marina has moorings and also offers a water taxi to sister property St Peter’s Bay (perfect as Port Ferdinand isn’t right on the beach).

There’s a restaurant/bar area on the ground floor overlooking the boats, and a great floating pool area with a bar which you reach along a jetty. It’s one of the best places to stay in Barbados if you’re considering self-catering options, and plan to hire a car to get around. It’s also about to be even more desirable with the upcoming opening of Nikki Beach, moments away from the property.

Great travel guide on Barbados with useful information and gorgeous photos. Thanks for your help with my trip planning!

Thanks Krishna – so happy you found it helpful. Glad you had a great trip too!

Barbados is such an amazing destination to spend the vacation.

Thanks for your amazing travel guide and photos are mind-blowing.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! It was wonderful out there.

I loved visiting Barbados and can entirely agree with you that Oistin’s Fish Fry is amazing on Fridays. I’m so glad I was able to experience it. I was interested to learn that Barbados is popular with fellow Brits but it has a lot going for it so I guess that’s why. I think I need to return to explore more of the island after reading your post.

Love this guide! We are big Barbados fans too and agree it’s got so much to offer alongside just beaches (although they are beautiful!) We also did the Seaduced trip which we loved. We stayed in Port St Charles (next to Port Ferdinand) in the past so it’s interesting to hear how you found staying there. So many good options in Barbados!

The best time to visit Barbados for beaches, sun and festival fun

Do you love music, culture, gastronomy and sport, or just laying back on a stunning beach in the tropical sunshine? If so, Barbados will tick all your checkboxes and then some. This lush tropical island at the southern end of the Caribbean has everything you'd expect from a Caribbean island and then some.

If fun-filled festivals are your jam, you’ll find plenty on the cultural calendar during the peak season from mid-December to mid-April. But for more laid-back travelers drawn here by the lure of carefree beach days and relaxed exploring inland, the two shoulder seasons from mid-April to June and across the month of November combine great weather with slightly lower prices.

Big events on the Bajan calendar include international motocross events, carnival celebrations and some top culinary festivals, so there's truly something for all tastes and budgets. Here’s our guide to the best times to visit Barbados.

High season is the best time for festivals and good beach weather (mid-December to mid-April)

Travelers looking to escape cold winter temperatures in the northern hemisphere descend on Barbados for some sunshine between December and April. This surge in interest results in pricier flights and increased competition for accommodation excursions and dining experiences – if there's anywhere you have your heart set on, book early to secure a spot.

The climate tends to be slightly cooler during the high season, with much less humidity than in the steamy summer months. It’s also Barbados' dry season, so there’s very little chance of a prolonged downpour driving you off your sun lounger.

Adding to the fun, big festivals such as the Oistins Fish Festival and the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup horse race dot the calendar during across this busy period, for days when you don't want to sit back on the beach taking advantage of the favorable weather.

The shoulder seasons are the best time for sightseeing (mid-April to June, November)

Prices tumble as the high season crowds depart, creating welcome opportunities for a budget-friendly island getaway. Barbados has two shoulder seasons, bookending the winter high season. From mid-April, the crowds disperse and things remain calm until July when activities ramp up for the Crop Over festival. November ushers in a second shoulder season, as the rainy season tapers off. Not only are prices low, but the lack of crowds allows for unhurried sightseeing.

A bodyboarder runs along a beach in Barbados in front of a lifeguard tower

Low season is the best time for budget travelers (July to October)

Like much of the Caribbean , Barbados has its rainy season during the summer months, and the wet weather continues almost until the year’s end. This is also hurricane season – officially running from July to November – but most storm systems pass to the north, and the island has managed to avoid any serious trouble for years.

Visitors can expect some showers, but usually not enough to derail vacation plans. Temperatures hover consistently above 80ºF in the daytime and there's enough sun around to still enjoy the beach. If you’re traveling on a budget, this season brings discounts on everything from airfares to accommodation.

January is the time for cool breezes and sailing

New Year welcomes in cool breezes and a throng of visitors drawn here by the prestigious Round Barbados Sailing Week , formerly the Mount Gay Round Barbados Series. The highlight is a sprint of 60 nautical miles around the island, with cases of rum on the line for the winners. Key events: New Year’s Day,  Round Barbados Sailing Week, Errol Barrow Day

How to get around Barbados like a local

February is a big time for cultural celebrations

Barbados celebrates its rich heritage during the busy Holetown Festival , commemorating the anniversary of the first British settlement on the island on February 17, 1627. This week-long cultural showcase includes a steel band concert, street fairs, parades, a Queen of the Festival Pageant, memorial talks, and lots of liming (as locals like to call mingling, eating and drinking). Key events: Holetown Festival, Barbados’ Agricultural Festival (Agrofest), Vujaday Music Festival

April is for fun and festivals

The largest community festival in Barbados, Oistins Fish Festival falls over the Easter weekend, usually in April. The tiny fishing village of Oistins on the scenic south coast hosts a unique celebration to honor the local fishing industry with a fish-boning competition, a grease-pole contest, music, dancing, and of course, lots of seafood. Wash down local specialties such as flying fish, cou cou (cornmeal and okra), fish cakes, and "pudding and souse" (pickled pork with sweet potato and breadfruit) with a frosty Banks Beer. Key events: Holy Week, Oistins Fish Festival, Barbados Reggae Festival, Heroes Day

Two young women snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea off Barbados

May ushers in the calmer shoulder season

The crowds thin out in late April and May, and Gospelfest Barbados is one of the last major festivals before the sticky summer. This gospel explosion is arguably the best celebration of the genre in the region and draws major artists from multiple countries. Key events: Gospelfest Barbados, Barbados Celtic Festival , Labour Day (May Day)

Unmissable things to do in Barbados beyond the beach

June is the start of hurricane season

The summer heat starts revving up with the Sol Rally Barbados , the Caribbean’s biggest annual motor sport international. This tarmac road rally consists of 24 stages, and it's one of the crown jewels of the island’s sports tourism calendar. Technically, June is also the beginning of hurricane season but the southern Caribbean rarely sees a direct hit. Key events: Sol Rally Barbados

July sees Barbados explode with festival color

One of the hottest months of the year, July also sees the most scintillating event on the island — Crop Over, a carnival-style harvest festival that has been celebrated here since the 17th century. Barbados’ biggest party runs through till August, with distinctively local events such as calypso competitions, soca monarch contests, J’ouvert jump-ups, Kiddie Kadooment and the Pic-O-De-Crop show, when the annual Calypso King is crowned. Key events: Crop Over, Dive Fest Barbados

August brings the dizzying finale of Crop Over

The first Monday in August signals the end of Crop Over and the festival goes out with a bang. The Grand Kadooment revelry starts at the National Stadium on the outskirts of Bridgetown and extends down the Mighty Grynner Highway. It’s a visually stunning explosion of vibrant feathers, bedazzled headpieces, and sequined bodysuits as thousands of Bajans parade jubilantly through the streets to rhythmic soca beats. Key events: the finale of Crop Over, Emancipation Day

Palm trees and white sand at Bottom Bay, Barbados

September is for the creative arts

Barbados' talent is not limited to Rihanna, though she's celebrated as a national treasure. Starting in September and continuing for three months, the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts showcases rich local talent in diverse disciplines, including dance, drama, speech, fine arts, literary arts, music, culinary arts, craft, photography and film. Key events: National Independence Festival of Creative Arts, Barbados Ninja Throwdown

October is the best time to sip rum

Barbados is hailed as the birthplace of rum, thanks to its long history as the world’s largest sugar producer. The Barbados Food & Rum Festival invites local and international chefs, wine experts, and mixologists for a four-day gastronomical exhibition. From street food to fine dining, connoisseurs gather to experience the ultimate pairing of local rum and Bajan cuisine. Key events: Barbados Food & Rum Festival, Barbados Jazz Excursion and Golf Tournament , Barbados National Triathlon

Unmissable things to do in Barbados beyond the beach

November is the end of hurricane season

Hurricane season makes its exit just in time for the Open Water Festival , a friendly and inclusive three-day open-water swimming extravaganza. The swimming competitions are open to all ages and ability levels, with distances of 1.5km, 2km, 3.3km, 5km and 10km. November also sees the island celebrate its independence from Great Britain in 1966 with contests, fairs and the lighting of public buildings in the colors of the Barbados flag. Key events: Open Water Festival, Lighting Ceremony, Independence Day

December is for sunbathers and runners

Save for a few errant spurts of rain, the balmy but breezy December weather is ideal for spending days on the beach, but if you feel like getting active, this is also the time for the Run Barbados Marathon . The route begins and ends on the Bay Street Esplanade, with a picturesque course winding through Bridgetown, but the real fun starts with the post-run parties in St Lawrence Gap, just east of Bridgetown near Dover Beach. Key event: Run Barbados Marathon, Old Year’s Night (New Year's Eve)

Best Times To Visit Barbados

The best time to visit Barbados is between July and November. Though these months fall within the Caribbean's hurricane season, hurricanes rarely hit the island, and you could attend one of the lively Crop Over Festival activities if you vacation during this time of year. Temperatures stay between the mid-70s and mid-80s year-round, so there's little reason to travel during the peak season, which occurs from late December to mid-April.

The Best Time to Visit Barbados

best time to visit barbados 2023

Uwe Moser / Getty Images

The best time to visit Barbados is in April through May, after the winter snowbirds have returned home for the season and before the rainy season picks up later in the summertime. Additionally, visiting in spring will be more cost-efficient for budget travelers who are looking to avoid higher room rates and expensive airfare. Barbados is located outside of the Caribbean's hurricane belt, and, thanks to the year-round trade-winds, the temperature on the island stays relatively consistent from month to month.

Weather in Barbados

Barbados is known for its year-round sunshine, and the temperature in Barbados remains relatively stable for all four seasons. The rainy season in Barbados begins in June and ends in November, with the wettest month of the season occurring in October, with an average of 7.3 inches of rainfall. Sun-seekers should feel comfortable visiting Barbados year-round, however, as these showers are known to pass quickly. The island is outside of the Caribbean's hurricane belt, so visitors needn't fear severe storms. The average temperature for December through March is 79 degrees F (26 degrees C), increasing to 81 degrees F (27 degrees C) in April through November.

Peak Tourist Season in Barbados

As the homeland of Rihanna, the island has become even more visible in popular culture in the past several years. However, Barbados has always been a popular tourist destination for sun-seeking travelers during the winter holiday. Travelers looking to avoid paying extra costs in airfare and hotel reservations should book their trips beginning in mid-April (after the last of the spring break revelers have departed the island) through mid-December (before the arrival of holiday vacationers.) Tourists looking to book their vacations during peak months (December through February) should book accommodation well in advance and prepare to scour the internet for flight deals.

Key Holidays & Events in Barbados

There's no shortage of events and festivities occurring in Barbados throughout all twelve months of the year, and the 400-year-old tradition of the Barbados Crop Over Festival (running for six boisterous weeks in July and August) is a particular highlight. Tourists visiting during the holidays should look into the horse-racing excursions on New Year's Day, while visitors in the fall should coordinate their trip to coincide with the nation's Independence Day celebrations in November. Meanwhile, the Oistins Fish Festival, held in April over Easter Weekend, is the largest community event on the island.

January is peak tourist season in Barbados as travelers from northern countries head down to the island for a winter respite. Winter is also the driest part of the year on the island, which is ideal for sunbathers and active travelers. Visitors should book their trips in advance to avoid heightened travel costs for airfare and hotel bookings.

Events to check out:

  • Film buffs should check out the Barbados Film Festival ; an annual event held on the island at the beginning of every year in January.
  • The Round Barbados Sailing Week also occurs at the beginning of the new year.

February continues to be peak season for tourists in Barbados, and it also coincides with cultural events on the island. The Holetown Festival is held in celebration of the first settlers to arrive in Holetown, Barbados, on Feb. 17, 1627, and occurs in the town in which the original settlers first arrived. February is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 79 degrees F (26 degrees C), so travelers won't need much more than a light jacket in the evenings.

  • The weeklong Holetown Festival features arts and crafts, local cuisine, and street parades.
  • Visitors in February can also check out Agrofest , the National Agricultural Exhibition in Barbados.

Spring is an ideal time to visit Barbados, as the weather is dry and sunny, with average temperatures of 85 degrees F (30 degrees C) in March, 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) in April, and 87 degrees F (31 degrees C) in May. The cost of travel in March still reflects peak season prices, though there are deals on airfare and hotel rooms to be found in the following weeks of April.

  • The World Surfing League Barbados Surf Pro celebrates the island's spectacular surf conditions with professionals riding waves in the parish of St. Joseph every March.

Mid-April marks the beginning of decreased travel costs. Travelers visiting during Easter should look into attending the Oistins Fish Festival in Christ Church. The folk festival was founded by Lady St. John in 1967 and is a cherished annual tradition on the island.

  • The Oistins Fish Festival is the largest community event on the island, held over Easter Weekend in the Christ Church parish.
  • Another event to check out is the Barbados Reggae Festival , which promises live music and good vibes every April.

May marks the first month of decreased travel fares and is an ideal time for visitors to plan their trips to Barbados. Take advantage of the sunny weather and lowered flight deals by booking your trip right before the rainy season begins in June. Visitors to the island in May should also be sure to check out the Barbados Gospelfest and lovers of fast cars and automobiles should be ready to start your engines for the Sol Rally Barbados.

  • The regional and global talent showcased Barbados Gospelfest is one of the most significant cultural offerings of its kind.
  • Established in 1990, the Sol Rally Barbados is the largest annual motor event in all of the Caribbean.

The average high temperature during the summer months in Barbados is 87 degrees F (25 degrees C), though trade winds keep the temperatures relatively consistent in Barbados year-round. June marks the beginning of the rainy season, as well as the start of the festival season as well. The decreased cost of travel in the summer months and early fall is also sure to appeal to the budget-minded visitor.

  • Segway Polo in Paradise is a one-of-a-kind event that occurs at the end of May through to the beginning of June at the Segway Polo Club in the parish of St. Michael.

July and August are lovely times to visit for the traveler looking to experience some local culture and lively celebrations. The six-week Crop Over Festival kicks off in mid-July. It runs through August, offering an endless array of entertainment for visitors lucky enough to be visiting the island during this period. Travelers will also be able to take advantage of more inexpensive flight deals and hotel bookings when traveling to Barbados during the summertime.

  • The Barbados Crop Over Festival is a 300-year-old Bajan tradition that embodies the best the island has to offer in terms of music, cuisine, celebrations, and culture.

August sees the continuation of the Crop Over festivities, which conclude with a masquerade parade on Grand Kadooment Day. Though August is technically the hottest month of the year, the average high temperature of 87 degrees F (31 degrees C) is in keeping with the prior summer months of June and July. Travelers can expect to take advantage of travel deals during this time, as well, since most visitors do not immediately think of the Caribbean for an August vacation.

  • Check out the Masquerade Bands on Grand Kadooment Day , which celebrates the end of Crop Over with a fittingly joyous and over-the-top celebration.

After the packed month of August, September is a relative break from the hectic events schedule. The fall marks the beginning of the peak wet season on the island. September is the best month for swimming, as the water is an enticing average sea temperature of 85 degrees F (29 degrees C). Furthermore, travel deals will remain in place until the influx of holiday visitors beginning in December.

After the relative quiet of September, October kicks back up again with several events and festivities for travelers to check out on the island. Why not check out some jazz while visiting Barbados? Or partake in the local flavors of Bajan rum? This month is a wonderful time to visit for culinary travelers and music aficionados, with a weekend dedicated to jazz, and another to rum. But bring a raincoat: October is the wettest month of the year (with an average of 7.3 inches of rainfall).

  • The Barbados Jazz Excursion & Golf Weekend is an annual festival that started on the island in 2014 and is perfect for music-lovers and golf fanatics.
  • Foodies, rejoice: The Barbados Food and Rum Festival celebrates Bajan cuisine and the island's famous rum, for which it is world-renowned.

November is the most humid month of the year, with 83 percent humidity, so travelers should pack breathable, lightweight clothing. November represents the last month of the year for travel deals, before the influx of tourists in December. It is also the time when many cultural events are held on the island, including the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts. The National Independence Festival was first established in November of 1973 and is an enticing draw for visitors contemplating visiting the island during late fall.

  • The National Independence Festival of Creative Arts is held by the National Cultural Foundation to celebrate the island's independence.
  • The Barbados Celtic Festival celebrates the long history between Barbados and the Celtic countries of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. Expect a big band and much celebration.

December marks the beginning of the peak tourists season when travelers head down to the island for the holidays. Visitors should look into coordinating their schedules to participate in some of the local traditions on the island. For example, Dec. 31st is a massive party in Barbados known as Old Year's Night. Expect champagne, fancy attire, and much revelry.

  • "Come for the Run, Stay for the Fun" at the Run Barbados Marathon Weekend , which has been held every December since 1983.

Between April and May, you can enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds in Barbados after the busy winter high season is over and before the rainy season begins.

The rainy season begins in June, but the heavy rain doesn't really pick up until later in the summer with August getting the most precipitation on average.

Hurricane season begins in June and ends in November, however Barbados falls outside the Caribbean's hurricane belt and storms only make landfall once every few years.

Best Time to Visit Barbados: Ideal Weather and Seasons Guide

Barbados, a tropical paradise in the Caribbean, offers visitors pristine beaches, clear turquoise waters, and a vibrant culture. When planning a trip to Barbados, it's important to consider the weather and the best time to visit to make the most of your stay.

Barbados Weather Seasons

Barbados has a tropical climate characterized by two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

  • Dry Season (December to May): This is the most popular time to visit Barbados as the weather is generally sunny, with warm temperatures and low humidity. The dry season is perfect for beach activities, water sports, and exploring the island's natural beauty.
  • Wet Season (June to November): The wet season brings higher humidity and the possibility of rain showers. Although there are more chances of rain, it is often short-lived and followed by sunny spells. The wet season also coincides with Barbados' carnival season, known as Crop Over, which features lively parades and festivities.

Monthly Weather in Barbados

Here is a monthly breakdown of the weather conditions in Barbados:

As seen in the table above, the months of December to May are part of the dry season, with lower humidity levels and less rainfall. The temperatures range from 27°C to 29°C, offering pleasant beach weather and ideal conditions for outdoor activities.

On the other hand, the wet season from June to November experiences increased humidity and rainfall. However, the temperatures remain relatively consistent, ranging from 29°C to 30°C. Despite the higher chance of rain showers, Barbados still receives ample sunshine, making it possible to enjoy the beaches and outdoor attractions.

It's important to note that even during the wet season, rain showers are often short-lived and followed by clear skies. However, it's advisable to carry a light rain jacket or umbrella when visiting during this time.

The best time to visit Barbados in terms of weather is during the dry season, from December to May, when the island experiences lower humidity levels, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall. However, if you don't mind occasional showers and want to experience the vibrant carnival season, visiting during the wet season from June to November can still be enjoyable.

No matter when you choose to visit, Barbados offers a wonderful tropical escape with its stunning beaches, friendly locals, and rich cultural heritage.

Best time to visit Barbados

Barbados is a great destination for year-round sunshine and warm weather. The sunniest and driest part of the year is from December to April, which is Barbados’s high season – during this time, temperatures reach a maximum of 29-30°C on average. The arrival of the wet season from July to November brings heavy rainfall, with the least amount of sunshine and greatest humidity in September and October. These months also have a higher risk of hurricanes – these are unlikely due to Barbados’s easterly position in the Caribbean, but still worth keeping track of. Rather than non-stop rain, the wet season in Barbados tends to involve short downpours or storms, which are usually followed by hot and sunny weather again which dries everything quickly.

Barbados Weather

Barbados weather by month.

Barbados in January January is a good time of year to visit Barbados. You’ll have up to 9 hours of sunshine per day and a maximum daily average of 29°C – pleasant temperatures without being too hot. It gets slightly cooler in the evenings but temperatures still hover around 22-23°C.

Barbados in February You’ll have some of the best Barbados weather in February – it’s the height of the dry season, with consistent temperatures up to around 29°C and the least amount of rainfall of any month. Now is a good time to visit beautiful Hunte’s Gardens in the middle of the island – you’ll be able to stroll around towering palms and exotic plants in an unusual sink-hole-like gully.

Barbados in March March is the last month of ideal Barbados climate, before the humidity starts to increase. Temperatures begin to creep up to a maximum daily average of 29-30°C, and you can expect a yearly high of up to 9 hours of sunshine.

Barbados in April For travellers considering when to visit Barbados, April is a popular month – it marks the start of the shoulder season when the busy peak period ends but before the low season kicks in. There’s a tad more rainfall than during January to March but still considerably less than the rest of the year ahead, and plenty of sun.

Barbados in May Barbados weather in May is still great, albeit slightly wetter than the earlier spring months; you can expect average maximum temperatures of 30-31°C. It’s the end of the shoulder season before the wet season begins in June, so prices should be lower than Easter, the summer holidays and Christmas. The best time to visit Barbados if you’re hoping to spot sea turtles is from May to October.

Barbados in June The first month of the wet season, June sees gradually increasing rainfall and has the strongest winds of any month (you can still expect plenty of sunshine though). Barbados’s famous Crop Over Festival also starts in June, and runs until early August.

Barbados in July July in Barbados is similar to June but with a more noticeable rise in rainfall – the monthly average is around 169mm. The temperature in Barbados in July hovers around a maximum daily average of 30-31°C again, but the extra rainfall brings an increase in humidity, too.

Barbados in August August is the height of summer in Barbados – the higher humidity and rainfall continue but there’s also a joint-highest average of 9 hours of sunshine per day. It’s especially important to wear plenty of sun cream and keep hydrated during this time, and the weather may get too humid for more strenuous activities like hiking. If you visit at the beginning of the month you can get involved in Grand Kadooment Day, the grand finale to Crop Over Festival where thousands of locals and visitors parade through the streets in colourful costumes.

Barbados in September If you’re considering when to go to Barbados, it’s now the middle of the hurricane season and September experiences some of the highest rainfall of the year. You’re likely to have some showers during your stay, and September to October is the least sunny time of year; however, there’s still an average of 7 hours of sunshine per day and consistent temperatures of around 30°C, meaning you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sunbathe.

Barbados in October October sees the highest amount of rainfall out of any month in Barbados and humidity similar to September. Visiting museums and attractions can be a good way to escape the more frequent showers – we love the rum distillery tour at St Nicholas Abbey and the spectacular rock formations in Harrison’s Cave. October may not be the best time to go to Barbados but days will still be sunny overall.

Barbados in November November in Barbados is when the wet season begins to taper off – there is still a fair amount of rainfall but less than at the start of autumn, and heading towards winter the average amount of sunshine creeps back up to 8 hours per day.

Barbados in December You’re now entering the start of the high season in Barbados. December is drier and less humid than the autumn months, with a similar amount of rainfall to May at an average of around 112mm. Expect consistent sunshine and temperatures of around 29°C, but more people and higher prices around Christmas in particular.

Excellent weather in May, great visibility even under water. We really liked Barbados, despite its small size the island has a lot to offer – especially beautiful beaches!

Our trip to Barbados went from 22 to 29 June 2016 and we had a wonderful time on this paradisiacal island. The children felt very comfortable and we adults felt even more comfortable. Dream beaches with snow-white sand and a shallow slope have even seen a sea turtle in the water in front of the hotel and many colourful fish. One day we had clouds and rain (but then it really poured), on 6 days it was wonderfully sunny.

Best and Worst Times to Visit Barbados

The best time of year to visit Barbados is during the dry season from January through May. The worst time is August through November during the Barbados hurricane season.

But some of the best months are cooler than average, while the worst months are warmer. When visitors go depends in part on what they want to do there. January and February are good for land activities but a bit chilly at times in the water. March through May offer warmer temperatures in the air and water.

Barbados has more than 500,000 overnight visitors and 600,000 cruise visitors every year, according to the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA). The island is most popular with tourists from the United States and United Kingdom, the BTA says.

Popular Times to Visit

December, January and March are the most popular months for overnight visitors to the island, according to statistics from the Caribbean Tourism Organization. The least popular months are June, September and October.

December and January are popular with tourists who want to escape cold northern winters. December also is a common time for winter break from schools. March is a popular month for most of the Caribbean with families who have children on spring break. All three months are part of the island’s annual dry season.

The most popular months aren’t always the best months to visit. Likewise, the least popular months aren’t always the worst months. Average rainfall and temperatures offer the best guides to choose when to go and when not to go.

Barbados Hurricane Season

The Barbados hurricane season, also known as the rainy season, officially runs from June to November.

Based on the average amount of rain historically, the Barbados hurricane season is most active from August through November when rainfall increases dramatically. So summer vacationers should consider going to Barbados in July or especially in June when hurricanes and tropical storms are rare.

During the rainy season, the average rainfall amount increases each month until it reaches a high point of nearly seven inches in October.

For Barbados , the worst weather occurs in October. For more of the Caribbean, the worst weather takes place in September. For these reasons, September and October are the least popular months to visit Barbados.

Best Times to Visit for Weather

Even though December, January and March are the most popular months to visit Barbados, April and May are the best months for a combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain.

Cruises travel to Barbados year round, although they visit the island more during the dry season than the rainy season. To increase the chances of good weather, vacation planners should travel during the dry season.

Visitors to Barbados during the rainy season may luck out with good weather. But they should consider last-minute vacations with a safe 10-day weather forecast.

Traveling to Barbados during the off season may offer more deals and cheaper flights, but risky weather can make travel difficult.

The Dry Season

The island has steady temperatures throughout the year and big swings in the amount of rainfall.

Barbados follows a weather pattern similar to the rest of the Caribbean. The weather on the island is divided into two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.

The dry season runs from January to May when rainfall averages about two inches or less each month, according to historical data from the Barbados Meteorological Service. The average high temperature during the dry season hovers around 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

The low level of rain on Barbados during the dry season is common with other Caribbean islands. Hurricane threats are nonexistent.

More than 64 percent of overnight visitors to Barbados come during the dry season. The peak month of tourism is December with more than 53,000 arrivals.

Discounts and the lure of fewer crowds could account for the steady amount of cruise passengers visiting the island throughout the year.

Average Monthly Weather

The average monthly weather in Barbados ranges from the low 80s Fahrenheit in the winter to the mid 80s in the summer. Rainfall ranges from less than two inches in the late winter and early spring to nearly seven inches in the fall.

January is one of the best times to visit for low risk of rain, but average temperatures are the lowest of the year. Still, tourism is the second highest level of the year after December, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

February has the lowest average rainfall of the year with slightly warmer temperatures. Tourism drops slightly.

Tourism in March picks back up because children are on break from school. The risk of rain is almost as low as February. Temperatures edge up once again.

April is an excellent month to visit Barbados for low risk of rain and warmer temperatures. Beach lovers in particular should think about going this month instead of any month between December and March. Tourism takes a pretty big drop, so beaches are less crowded and hotel prices may drop a bit.

Barbados tourism declines again in May, the final month before the start of the Caribbean hurricane season . Average daytime temperatures reach 86 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius, which is near the high point of the year. The risk of rain is lower in the first half of the month than the second half.

The Caribbean hurricane season officially begins in June. The risk of a hurricane or tropical storm is quite low for any island in the Caribbean this month. But average rainfall begins to climb. Tourism drops again even though children are again on break from school.

The average monthly rainfall in July increases to more than four inches, which is a moderately high amount of rain for the Caribbean. Even so, tourism picks up a bit.

Average rainfall in August jumps to six inches, which is a high level of rain. It doesn’t stop vacationers from going to Barbados, some of whom may get lucky and have sunny skies.

Barbados is somewhat unusual for a Caribbean island because its average rainfall in September is about the same as August. Most Caribbean destinations have a big spike in September because it is the most active month for hurricanes and tropical storms. It’s a major reason why Barbados tourism plunges to the lowest point of the year.

Caribbean weather in October is the second worst of the year after September. For Barbados, it’s worse than September. Even so, tourism bounces back to nearly the same level as August.

Tourism in November bounces back even more as the Caribbean hurricane season winds down to the end. But rainfall is nearly as high in November as in October. It’s the second riskiest month of the year to visit the island.

The most popular month of the year to visit Barbados is December. Children and college students are on break from school. Northerners want to get away from cold winters. Average rainfall drops to just less than four inches, which is a moderately high amount.

Located in the Caribbean, Barbados may be a small island nation, but it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.

Home to stunning beaches, friendly locals, and sunny skies year-round, Barbados is a popular holiday destination for many.

While it may be an island paradise, like most places, there are certain times when you should and shouldn’t visit Barbados.

So, when is the best time to visit Barbados?

Table of Contents

Peak season , low season , shoulder season , 1. horse riding along the coast, 2. sail the platinum coast , 3. feast on seafood at oistins fish fry , 4. go snorkeling in carlise bay marine reserve , 5. explore animal flower cave .

The best time to visit Barbados is between mid-December and mid-April during the dry season.

During these months, you will experience less rainfall and average temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius.

When you visit during the dry season, you can spend your days swimming in the ocean, lying on the sand or discovering different areas of the island.

However, because this is the best time of year to visit Barbados, it’s the busiest and, therefore, the most expensive.

Thankfully, there are other times to visit Barbados when accommodation is cheaper, there are fewer people, and the weather is still good.

The low season in Barbados runs from July to October.

Some people choose to travel at this time due to the more affordable rates and laid-back experience with fewer tourists.

Although the low season falls within the wet season, more often than not, your tropical beach holiday will be unaffected.

Don’t want to visit Barbados during peak season (December to April)? Are you worried about getting rained on during the low season? The best time for you to visit is during the shoulder season (May, June and November).

During shoulder season, you get the best of everything. With minimal crowds, fantastic weather and low prices, you don’t have to worry about the best spots on the beach being taken or resorts being sold out.

Best Things to do in Barbados

So now that you know when the best time to visit Barbados is, here are the best things to do in Barbados.

One of the best places to admire the rugged wilderness on the Atlantic coast of Barbados is from the back of a horse!

Horse riding is possible on beaches all around the island, with guided trips available for all riders with different levels of experience.

One of the best places to go horse riding in Barbados is Bath Beach. This beach is where you’ll find golden sands, clear running streams and a backdrop of forest inhabited by monkeys.

Although the beach may be beautiful, one of the most memorable things about horse riding here is heading into the ocean to cool off on your horse’s back!

If you love horses or want to experience something different on the island, horse riding is one of the best things to do!

Located on the western shores of Barbados, the Platinum Coast is one of the most beautiful spots on the island, perfect for sailing!

The area, extending north from Payne’s Bay, boasts some of the most breathtaking stretches of sand, home to extravagant beachfront villas.

Sailing trips depart from the capital of Bridgetown, with stops to snorkel with turtles or explore reefs and shipwrecks along the way. Exploring this part of the island by boat is one of the best things to do in Barbados.

If you’re a fan of seafood, one of the best things to do in Barbados is head to Oistins on a Friday night.

Every Friday night, half of the island heads to this small village on the southwest coast for the legendary fish fry.

The island’s favourite feast comprises fresh fish, cold beer and great music.

Many kiosks serve a range of delicious food, from grilled fish and shellfish to chicken and port chops. Wash down your food with a cold beer or tasty cocktail and enjoy the live music.

If you love experiencing local activities, this is definitely an activity to remember while in Barbados.

Surrounded by stunning ocean and coral reefs, one of the best things to do in Barbados is snorkel in Carlise Bay Marine Reserve.

Just offshore from Bridgetown, the marine reserve is home to five shipwrecks, coral reefs, and thousands of fish and sea turtles, making it a fantastic snorkelling spot!

One of the best spots to check out? The Berwyn, a 70ft-long French tugboat that sunk in 1919. Today, it’s home to many thriving ecosystems attracting thousands of colourful fish!

While the more famous Harrison’s Cave in central Barbados draws crowds of tourists, the seaside grotto of Animal Flower Cave under the cliffs of St Lucy offers a more relaxed natural experience.

The only way down to the cave is via a set of stairs carved into a surging blowhole, adding to the fun!

The first chamber has shallow pools that contain the urchins that give the cave its name. It then opens out to the sea through a diamond-shaped hole in the rocks.

In the second cave, you’ll find a natural rock pool with calm waters protected from the crashing waves below the narrow opening.

If you love exploring natural wonders, visiting the Animal Flower Cave is one of the best things you can do in Barbados!

If you want sunshine, warm weather and days spent on the beach, the best time for you to visit Barbados is from December to April.

However, if you want to save money and explore the island without the crowds, visiting Barbados during the shoulder season is best for you.

Home to stunning beaches, beautiful marine life and lively locals, there is so much to love about this island nation in the Caribbean.
