Hey GVL, Grace here. đź‘‹ Last week I had the pleasure of taking a tour of the BMW Manufacturing Plant Spartanburg .

As someone who doesn’t know anything about engineering or cars , this place was like a tech-y Disneyland . So here’s a little behind the scenes of what I saw plus some fun facts about BMW Plant Spartanburg. P.S. – they offer tours to the public, so if you’re interested in checking this out for yourself, you can click the link here to sign up for a tour.

Some fast facts:

The plant is huge – 7 million sq. ft. (I got in close to 5,000 steps that day during the tour). So large in fact that I got lost when I first got there.

There are 11,000 jobs onsite , making BMW a major + important Upstate employer.

Plant Spartanburg produces more than 1,500 cars every day – and ~70% of that production is exported to 125 different countries .

Plant Spartanburg has produced more than 4.7 million vehicles since production first began in 1994 .

Those are just a few of the big, impressive numbers.

What we saw:

Disclaimer – BMW has a strict no-photo policy, but made an exception for us since we’re media. Something to keep in mind if you plan on booking a tour for yourself (which we recommend).

Make sure you click on the image to be able to view the videos.

We’ll also be sharing behind-the-scenes content on our Instagram , if you want to go follow us there .

BMW Plant Tour and Museums

bmw plant tours south carolina

BMW has only one factory in the U.S., and it happens to be just outside of Greenville, SC. Located along I-85 in Greer, the BMW Spartanburg plant is where every one of its X series of SUVs and crossovers is made. And if you’ve ever wondered what goes into making one of these “Ultimate Driving Machines,” you can get a behind-the-scenes look by taking a BMW plant tour.

What to know about the BMW plant tours

Booking the tour.

BMW plant tours are only available during normal business hours Monday through Friday and you need to book your tour online in advance . I recommend booking early. We did our visit when our German friend was in town and even though we booked a few weeks out before his arrival, there weren’t many options left.

The plant offers 1-hour and 2-hour plant tours. The 1-hour tour takes you through the assembly hall, while the 2-hour one also includes the body shop. What’s the difference? The assembly hall is where you see the main pieces of the car come together. The body shop is where you get a glimpse into the car being made from scratch.

Trust me on this: you want to book the 2-hour tour. That additional 1 hour and the higher ticket price (a $10 difference) are worth it. When we went, the 2-hour tour was $25 per person, but there’s a $5 discount for students between the ages of 12 and 20, and BMW Car Club members. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed on tours.

What to wear and bring

Make sure you wear closed-toed shoes and if you have a backpack, leave it in your car. Purses and handbags are okay to bring on the tour.

Before you head out for your tour they’ll give you safety glasses and a headpiece. They’ll also tell you to power off your cell phones and smartwatches. This is not a request. You can not use your phone or take photos on the tour. And they take it seriously. One guy took his phone out on the bus at the end of the tour and they threatened to call security.

Check out the Zentrum

Before your tour, check out the Zentrum museum. The tour starts there and BMW asks that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your tour time, which is really about all the time you need to enjoy the museum. They have on display the famous Isetta “Bubble car,” a Formula 1 car from the 2000 season, and everything from their classics to modern electric models.

A 2000-season Formula 1 car at BMW's Zentrum Museum

What you see on the BMW plant tour

Since I can’t share photos from the tour, I’ll do my best to describe what you’ll see. First you’ll board a bus that takes you to the body shop, which is where you’ll see the nuts and bolts of the car come together. This is where sparks fly (literally) as high-tech robots piece the frame together. This is the most exciting part of the tour, which is why I recommend booking the 2-hour option.

That takes up about the first hour of the tour, and after you’ll board the bus again and they take you to the assembly hall. Doors are added to the car, the vehicle goes through a series of tests, and it’s all finished once that famous blue and white logo (which we learned is based on the Bavarian flag, not an airplane propeller against a blue sky) to the hood. The one part you don’t get to see is the paint job, which happens in between the two halls.

At the end of the tour you can take your ticket to the gift shop in Zentrum where you’ll receive a free magnetic BMW pin. If wearing it is not your thing, they also make decent fridge magnets.

After your tour, visit the Ultimate Driving Museum

The Ultimate Driving Museum Exhibit Room

If you didn’t get enough BMW from BMW, head around the corner to the Ultimate Driving Museum . Owned by the BMW Car Club of America Foundation, this museum curates a new exhibit of BMW cars (and sometimes motorcycles) every year. In 2022 it is “The Power of M: Celebrating 50 Years.” The exhibit has 25 BMW M cars and the first M motorcycle. Each display also has a QR code you can scan to listen to an audio description about the car. My personal favorites were the “Batmobile” 1973 E09 3.0 CSL and the F92 M8 GTE IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar, which won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2019.

The "Batmobile" at the Ultimate Driving Museum

The museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $12 per adult and $6 for kids ages 6-17. Please note that their exhibits usually run from mid May through mid January.

BMW Owners News

BMW Zentrum museum and visitor center

While in Greer, South Carolina, for rider training at BMW’s Performance Center, I checked out the nearby Zentrum facility on the sprawling, mind-bogglingly vast campus of the marque’s North American manufacturing plant. Though diminutive in size, the Zentrum packs a high-quality punch, with a finely curated selection of vehicles and gorgeous displays representing BMW’s relentless and diverse progression of designs in both two- and four-wheeled formats, from its early days right up to the latest, greatest machines and several not available to the general public.

Dwarfed by the gargantuan, featureless factory building just behind it, the recently renovated Zentrum is an intricately serrated, glass-walled, C-shaped structure, replete with a large array of fountains in front of its relaxing courtyard and understated entryway. There’s a paradoxical combination of industrial and artistic aesthetics that ought to be incongruent, but they’re integrated seamlessly and effectively—perhaps as an architectural homage to BMW’s success at wedding form and function in so many of their creations.

Inside, visitors are greeted by a bright and airy space simultaneously uncrowded, yet packed with stunningly delicious eye candy to examine—quite closely, if desired, as there are very few ropes or railings between observers and the observed. An information booth in the reception area contains friendly staff (also scattered throughout the rest of the building) who will provide orientation and discuss the availability of scheduled one- or two-hour tours of the manufacturing plant. Tour tickets can be purchased there, by phone, or online via links on the Zentrum website for $15 or $25, respectively (BMW car club members and students aged 12-20 get a $5 discount; a CCA card is required when purchasing, and children under 12 are not permitted on plant tours). Much to my dismay, I learned these tours are often fully booked days in advance, so it behooves you to sign up for one well before your arrival; I certainly will next time! However, there is a Plan B available: a looping video of narrated tour highlights and absolutely amazing facts about plant operations, which plays continuously on a large screen in front of comfortable bench seating.

Now, on to what I came for! The first multi-level exhibit area features an eclectic collection of iconic BMW cars, arranged somewhat randomly and ranging from the open cockpit 1930 Ihle DIXI to the 2000 X5 SUV, the first model produced at the adjacent plant over two decades ago. The latter has a special place in my heart, since I owned one back in the day and still revel in memories of its Saturn V thrust, sports car handling, and luxurious accommodations. Several newer models are present, too, documenting the continuous arc of automotive development spanning nearly a century. Each classic is impeccably restored to its original showroom condition, and all vehicles on display, new and old, inspire extensive salivation—including the BMW/Williams FW22-02 formula one racer perched menacingly along the front wall.

bmw plant tours south carolina

Next, outside an auditorium not in use while I was there, is a pair of electric vehicles, an i-3 and i-8, representing a direction of innovation extending into the future, with electrons figuring ever more prominently in technological advances. Then comes “The most powerful letter in the world: M ,” featuring both roadgoing and racetrack versions of BMW’s top-tier performance coupes. Sadly, the motorcycle exhibit is miniscule, with just four modern variants (one being a scooter) showing a bit of the present-day lineup’s breadth. Still, given the Zentrum’s extreme space limitations and the dominance of the company’s automotive division, bikes may have received an arguably generous allotment of real estate.

Lastly, there’s an exhibit of the various X-series vehicles currently in production at Plant Spartanburg, so called, even though it’s technically in Greer, because Spartanburg is a more recognizable landmark. Nevermind that Greer is actually a tad closer to even more well-known Greenville—go figure! Given the world-leading demand for SUVs in the US, it makes sense for BMW to produce these here at the rate of 1,500 per day and ship what we don’t buy to other parts of the globe.

bmw plant tours south carolina

No museum would be complete without a gift shop, and the Zentrum’s is stocked with all sorts of BMW- and Mini-branded merchandise (modern Minis are made by BMW), including the obligatory shirts, caps, and drinkware, along with some genuinely interesting novelties. Expect BMW pricing. There’s also a little cafe, named after the Isetta “bubble car” (1955-1962) and decorated with an adorable specimen of the tiny machine on a waist-high pedestal.

The Zentrum is a gem—small, multi-faceted, and exquisitely beautiful. Although the vehicles on display are quite limited in number, they’re fascinating and accessible enough to fill a couple of hours with delight. I wouldn’t recommend going for the motorcycle exhibit, since you could do far better on that count by simply strolling into your local dealership. If, however, you’re already in or near Greer and possess a fondness for BMW cars, it’s well worth a visit. Admission is free, it’s open Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and you can easily augment your trip to the museum with a tour of the magnificent manufacturing facility if you plan ahead. Note that the Zentrum is located deep within the BMW campus. After passing through the main entrance, you’ll wind past a series of monolithic plant buildings before the access road terminates at a visitor parking lot with the Zentrum at its far edge.

Oh Carolina!

South carolina's tourist attractions: as breathtaking as they are varied..

27 November 2019

Roadmap South Carolina

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS

Enjoy stupendous views of the sun rising over the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The trip through South Carolina begins in the hilly northwest. This is where the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains, a chain of mountains extending over several states, cross the Palmetto State of South Carolina.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to the 1085-meter-high Sassafras Mountain, the highest point in South Carolina. The mountain is named after the sassafras tree, also known as the fennel wood or clove-cinnamon tree.

Hikers should really undertake the ascent, because at the summit an exceptional tourist attraction awaits. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is building an observation platform, which is due to open in late summer of 2018. On clear days, it promises a panorama view of the four states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.

In the middle of Table Rock State Park lies the idyllic Lake Oolenoy.

Now we leave the mountains and head southeast towards the coast, entering the Piedmont. The name of this plateau-like region is derived from the French “pied” for foot and “mont” for mountain, as the Piedmont lies right at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Piedmont includes a number of South Carolina’s economically important cities such as Greenville, Greer and Spartanburg, which are home to the automotive industry. The BMW Spartanburg Plant, the largest BMW Group plant worldwide, operates here with 9,000 employees. The plant is exclusively dedicated to BMW X models – which is why Spartanburg is known as the “Home of the X”.

Spartanburg, Home of the X.

The BMW Group success story in the USA would not have been possible without the openness and warm-heartedness of the people living in South Carolina.

Chairman of BMW AG

Spartanburg, however, is best known as an exciting place for music fans: One of the most famous representatives of the Piedmont Blues, Pink Anderson – who by the way, the band Pink Floyd named itself after – was active around this region. Piedmont blues, in contrast to the deep blues, generally addresses common everyday topics. If you want to get to know more about this type of blues, you should follow the Spartanburg Music Trail. The trail leads you through historic Spartanburg, telling the musical history of the city at several stops along the way.

Unspoiled nature in Table Rock State Park.

An absolute must-see for everyone who visits this region: the panoramic Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway Route (SC 11). It leads you through gentle hills country and romantic river valleys. Along the way you’ll come across countless possibilities for short hikes, for example in the state parks of Table Rock and Caesars Head, with exciting trails over suspension bridges revealing views of rushing waterfalls.

SANDHILLS REGION

Columbia, South Carolina's state capital, is certainly worth a visit.

Let us continue to the state capital of South Carolina, Columbia, named after discoverer Christopher Columbus. The city is home to nearly 134,000 residents and is located in the midst of the Sandhills Region, an area known for its broad, sandy areas.

Rare animals and exciting history: the Sandhills Region is beloved for a variety of reasons.

Another worthwhile stop is the South Carolina State Museum. There’s something for everyone interested in learning more about the state's past. Thousands of exhibits cover the highlights of the 20 th century, the time of America's two great wars as well as the time of the colonial settlement all the way back to the life of the native inhabitants of South Carolina 14,000 years ago.

If you prefer nature, then head out northeast from Columbia on United States Highway 1 (US1). On your way through the border region between the hilly part of South Carolina and its flatter coastal region, you will find numerous noteworthy stops, such as the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, where birdwatchers keep an eye out for the threatened red-cockaded woodpecker, or Cheraw State Park, a popular destination for golf fans – the 18-hole Cheraw State Park Golf Course, with its broad fairways, gently sloping greens and Lake Juniper as a backdrop is a truly pleasurable place to play golf.

COASTAL PLAIN

Grand Strand: endless sandy beaches characterise the coastal region of South Carolina.

Visitors to South Carolina can find even more golf courses in the state's flat coastal plain. Hilton Head island on the Atlantic coast alone offers more than 20 golf courses. But golf greens are not the only lure of South Carolina’s southern coast. Fans of long beach walks will find Myrtle Beach a paradise, while history buffs can travel on to Charleston and historic Fort Sumter.

Terribly picturesque: Charleston's Old Town.

The port city of Charleston, founded in 1670, is beloved for its historic Old Town: cobblestone streets, horse carts and pastel-coloured houses take visitors back to the 19 th century. Stroll about the romantic French Quarter and marvel at the many church steeples that gave Charleston its nickname “The Holy City”.

Southern cuisine is beloved for its delicious stews.

In addition, Charleston is known for outstanding cuisine. Of special note is Gullah cuisine with its West African roots, which, as a relic of the era of slavery, is very widespread around Charleston. To experience it, you can for example line up at Bertha’s Kitchen at 2332 Meeting Street Road. In this restaurant, which opened in 1979, you can really get a taste of the culinary history of South Carolina over a plate of okra soup – a thick stew of okra pods, tomatoes and pork. The James Beard Foundation, which gives annual awards to restaurants for their regional authenticity, awarded Bertha’s Kitchen the coveted America's Classic Award in 2017. Another speciality of the Charlestonian kitchen: the Lowcountry Boil – a stew of shrimp, sausages, potatoes and corn.

We wind up our tour of South Carolina with an interesting fun fact: the Charleston originated here, a dance made popular in the 1920s by Josephine Baker.

BMW Spartanburg Plant

The BMW Spartanburg Plant

The BMW Spartanburg plant, in Greer, South Carolina, is the BMW Group's largest plant worldwide. Around 1,400 BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5 and BMW X6 automobiles leave the assembly line every day. Currently more than 9,000 people are employed at the Spartanburg plant. Until 2021, BMW will invest another 600 million euros here. Currently the plant is gearing up to produce the BMW X7, which will appear on the market at the end of 2018.

BMW Performance Driving Center

Video description

South Carolina is also home of the east coast BMW Performance Driving Center, where new BMW owners can take delivery of their vehicles and drive a variety of BMWs on a closed course. The BMW Performance Center was established in 1996, and thousands of new BMW owners from across the country have chosen to take part in an immersive BMW experience and come to Greer to take delivery. The BMW Performance Driving School, located at the Delivery Center, allows drivers of all ages to experience an Ultimate Driving Machine® at the limit on a closed track environment.

Production sites worldwide

The BMW Group’s production network is home to a wealth of expertise – at over 30 production sites worldwide. Come and visit us at selected locations worldwide and experience production.

Plant Berlin

The BMW Group’s premium motorbikes roll off the production line in the capital. But not only the motorbikes themselves, but also their production is spectacular: more than 2,200 employees from over 20 nations work hand in hand, supported by state-of-the-art technology, to produce high-quality bikes. Visitors also experience the unique insights: The BMW Group Plant Berlin offers public plant tours.

Plant Dingolfing

The BMW Group plant in Dingolfing is the largest vehicle plant of the BMW Group in Europe. The plant site measures 2.8 million square metres. Around 17,000 employees ensure smooth production processes – and pave the way for the mobility of tomorrow. Today, the site is already the showcase for automotive topics of the future. This is primarily due to the BMW iX, which has been rolling off their production line since July 2021: It is fully electric, fully networked and drives automatically. Series production of the sixth BMW 7 Series generation began in Dingolfing in July 2022. A visit to the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing is only available to special stakeholders of the site and needs to be arranged in advance. Tours for private individuals and corresponding registrations are not planned until further notice.

Plant Landshut

At the BMW Group plant in Landshut, around 3,500 employees manufacture, among other things, components for the pioneering BMW i models, i.e. vehicles with partially or fully electric propulsion systems. With future-oriented technologies, the plant plays the role of an innovation-driver as an in-house component production facility. Day after day, the employees ensure that a piece of Landshut’s innovative power is in almost every BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce, as well as in many BMW motorbikes. The BMW Group Plant Landshut is a target group location that offers its tour formats for trade visitors and closed groups. Public tours are therefore not bookable.

Plant Leipzig

The BMW Group Plant in Leipzig is one of the most innovative automotive factories in the world. The central building designed by Zaha Hadid, one of the most famous modern architects, is unique. Around 1,000 vehicles roll off the production line every day. Also, starting from 2024, the entire process chain of high-voltage battery production will be shown here. The BMW Group Plant Leipzig offers public Plant Tours where visitors can experience production at this location.

Plant Munich

The BMW Group plant in Munich is the main plant of the BMW Group. It is located in the north of Munich, in the immediate vicinity of the corporate headquarters, the BMW Museum and BMW Welt. Around 8,000 employees from over 50 nations work at this site. Vehicles and engines have been produced in the heart of Munich since 1922 –and around eleven million premium cars now roll off its production line. As early as 2023, at least half of all vehicles from Munich are to be equipped with an electric drive. The BMW Group Plant Munich is located in the immediate vicinity of the BMW Group headquarters, the BMW Museum and BMW World. Combination offers therefore attract visitors not only to the main plant, but also to this surrounding attractions.

Plant Oxford

The BMW Group Plant Oxford is the home of the MINI. The legendary and popular car has been manufactured here for more than 20 years. The plant is also known as the laboratory of the future: it only takes around 22 hours to complete a vehicle from the delivery of its component materials. MINI Plant Oxford offers public plant tours. Before or after the tour, there is the opportunity to learn even more about the fascinating history of MINIs in the MINI Museum.

Plant Regensburg

A new BMW leaves the Regensburg plant every 57 seconds – totalling around 1,000 per working day. Production started in 1986 with 200 cars a day and has continuously increased. Today, around 9,000 employees are working on this success story, which continues with its electrified models. With the plug-in hybrid variants of the BMW X1 and the BMW X2, the first electrified Regensburg models are already on the road. They combine the best of both worlds – a combination of a combustion engine and an electric motor. The BMW Group Plant Regensburg is a target group location that offers its tour formats for trade visitors and closed groups. Public tours are therefore not bookable.

Plant Rosslyn

The South African plant in the Rosslyn district was the BMW Group’s first international location in 1973. Within a short time, the plant developed into a flexible, efficient and sustainable production facility. Currently, 3,000 employees in Rosslyn primarily build the sixth generation of the BMW X3 series with an annual production volume of around 75,000 vehicles. Plant San Luis PotosĂ

The San Luis PotosĂ plant is the first BMW Group location in Mexico and is considered a pioneer in sustainability and digitalisation. This is due to the BMW Group’s first paint shop that is completely free of process wastewater and the power supply, which is completely generated from renewable energies and will be 100 per cent CO2-free in the future. At the same time, Industry 4.0 enables a rapid response to new production variants and volumes. Around 3,000 employees mainly produce the BMW 3 Series G20 there. The BMW Group Plant San Luis PotosĂ offers public plant tours.
