The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Bruges in Winter

Share the love

Bruges, Belgium is one of the most striking and well-preserved medieval European cities.

While it maintains its charm year-round, Bruges in winter is especially magical. Although this “Venice of the North” is small, it’s rich in belly-warming delicacies and holiday cheer.

Whether you’re strolling the quaint cobblestone streets, indulging in the region’s magnificent chocolate and beer, admiring the architecture of a bygone age, or indulging in a romantic European babymoon , you’re sure to get swept away in the magic.

Here’s what to expect when visiting fairytale Bruges in winter.

Bruges in Winter: What to Expect

Winter weather in bruges.

I truly wasn’t prepared for how cold Bruges was in January. The reason for this is that Bruges is populated with canals that run like arteries throughout the city. The exposed water from the canals creates moisture in the air, making it feel colder.

Plus, as Belgium is a low-lying country, cold sea air blows far inland, adding to the wind chill.

The average temperature for Bruges in January ranges from 34° Fahrenheit (1° Celsius) to 43° Fahrenheit (6° Celsius). Refer to this handy page of weather averages before you go.

How to Stay Warm When Visiting Bruges in Winter

  • Dress appropriately – You’ll definitely want to bundle up before strolling around. I wore about four layers of clothing the entire time and still felt cold, so I recommend layering up for winter. Warm winter boots, gloves, a scarf, and a winter hat are a must. Also, the majority of the city is cobblestone, so leave the heels at home!
  • Go ice skating – Taking to the ice rink is a perfect way to get your blood pumping and keep warm. Typically, the Market Square ice skating rink is open until just after New Year’s Day as part of the Christmas market festivities. Unfortunately, however, the 2020 Christmas Market is canceled.
  • Indulge in a Belgian hot chocolate – If you love Belgian chocolate, don’t miss the chance to toast up with a proper hot cocoa! The Old Chocolate House comes highly recommended, offering over a dozen varieties of delicious chocolate.
  • Cozy up by a fire – When winter winds are too blustery, it’s time to go in search of a fireplace! Fortunately, a number of restaurants in Grote Markt have them. We also enjoyed the fireplace at the charming Pand Hotel , where we spent two unforgettable nights.

Are you dreaming of spending a magical winter in Bruges? This medieval Belgian city feels like it's straight out of a fairytale, particularly during the wintertime. From the festive Bruges Christmas market, to the belly-warming Belgian waffles and frites, to the irresistible Belgian chocolatiers, you’ll fall in love with this winter wonderland. How to Get to Bruges

Ostend-Bruges International Airport is the nearest airport to Bruges. However, it’s quite small and has very limited flights.

Your best bet is probably to fly into  Brussels , Belgium’s capital city, and then catch a train to Bruges.

The average travel time between the cities is just one hour and thirteen minutes by train. Plus, the trains are heated and cozy, making for a pleasant experience in winter. We enjoyed a convenient and comfortable ride.

There are actually two exits at the Bruges train station, which threw us for a bit of a loop.

One leads to the Old Town and the other leads to the outermost part of the city which is more modern. The Old Town is typically what people come to Bruges to see.

How to Get Around Bruges in Winter

Bruges is an incredibly walkable city (provided cobblestone isn’t an issue for you).

In fact, it’s so walkable that it doesn’t operate on a subway system the way major metropolitan cities like Brussels do.

I would actually rank walking as one of the top modes of transportation in Bruges, along with bikes, busses, and horse & carriage rides (if you’re feeling touristy).

Horse & carriage ride in Bruges

Bruges also offers a convenient bus service that runs from the station to the city center and back every five minutes. This can come in handy on chillier days when you may not feel like walking.

You can read more about the bus lines and pricing  here .

Driving in the city is not ideal, although it’s possible. One-way cobblestone streets aren’t particularly conducive to cars, as the Old Town was built before motorized vehicles.

On-street parking is also limited and costly, so unless your hotel has reserved spaces, your best bet is to hire a driver.

Where to Stay

There are a number of charming boutique hotels in Bruges and some even offer canal views.

We spent our first night at  Hotel Bourgoensch Hof , which was right on the canal. This is a great low-cost option in a prime location.

After that, we spent two incredible nights at  The Pand Hotel , which I highly recommend. This four-star property is one of the “Small Luxury Hotels of the World” and it did not disappoint.

I loved cozying up in this intimate hotel after a few cold days of exploring.

We stayed in a classic “Ralph Lauren Suite” and enjoyed picturesque views of the classic storybook homes.

You can read more about my stay at the Pand Hotel .

Regardless of where you stay, most anywhere you choose in Bruges will be a convenient location, given the intimate size of this city.

Alternatively, if you can’t fit an overnight stay into your itinerary, you can enjoy much of what this special city has to offer in a fun day trip to Bruges .

Attractions You Can Enjoy in Bruges in Winter

Fortunately, you can enjoy many of the same attractions in the winter as you would during warmer months, provided you’re dressed appropriately.

One of the most striking things about Bruges is that the majority of its medieval architecture is still intact, similar to Prague . It’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time as you walk around. I felt like we walked onto a movie set or entered a magical wardrobe portal into a European “Narnia.”

1. Grote Markt

The Market Square ( Grote Markt ) is the centerpiece of beautiful Bruges.

You’ll enjoy a stunning 360 degrees of eye candy if you stand in the middle of the Market Square and turn in a circle. Here you’ll find colorful guild houses (that have been converted into restaurants), the Belfry of Bruges , and the Provincial Palace .

FUN FACT: The crow-stepped gable construction of the guild houses was originally designed to create easier access for chimney sweeps and roofers. This design made climbing easier when cranes weren’t yet invented and tall ladders weren’t available.

Markt is also where you can catch a horse & carriage ride for a fun tour around the city.

The Market Square is almost always flocked with tourists, hence why the guild houses were converted into restaurants.

This main hub of the city is a must-see, but don’t go in expecting a “local” feel here; it’s tourist central.

I recommend coming in the morning, before the crowds take over. Plus, you’ll find it’s significantly warmer when the sun is out.

2. Burg Square

Burg Square is packed with history and has a highly cinematic feel to it.

Encompassing architectural styles from Neo-Classicist, to Gothic, to Renaissance, there is many a photo opportunity to be had here.

If you’re a fan of doors, you’ll love the Basilica of the Holy Blood .

The Palace of the Liberty of Bruges is also striking, as it’s adorned in real gold .

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the largest fireplace in Europe. Sadly, we didn’t learn about this until after we left, but I highly recommend stopping inside to warm up and check it out!

There’s also the iconic  City Hall , standing tall since 1376.

3. Windmills of Bruges

If you love the charm of storybook windmills , you can’t miss the four remaining gems in Bruges.

The windmills run along the canal path and are only about a 10-15 minute stroll outside the Markt. I was doubtful whether we’d have enough time to visit them until I discovered just how walkable the city really is!

This is a fun, free, and totally accessible activity you can enjoy while in Bruges.

You can also pay a small fee to go up the windmills at specific times. Head  here for pricing information and to explore this option further.

4. Bruges Canals

The canals of Bruges are part of what make this city so special.

Unfortunately, boat trips aren’t typically available in Bruges in winter, but you can catch a half-hour boat ride from March 1 – November 15. For the full operating schedule, head here .

That said, the canals definitely make a beautiful backdrop for a romantic winter stroll.

I also recommend making a stop at one of the most iconic spots in all of Bruges. It was made famous by the film, In Bruges .

There’s something magical about seeing this spot in winter, but keep in mind that the main tree will be bare at this time.

PRO TIP: You’ll want to get here early (as in, before 9:00 AM) for a good shot, as this famous spot is almost always swarmed with tourists.

5. Frietmuseum

Had enough of the cold? Not to worry! A visit to the Frietmuseum is the perfect way to warm up with a signature Belgian treat: frites .

You’ll discover how French fries came to be – and the trade secrets responsible for their irresistible flavor!

After paying a  small entrance fee , you’ll walk through several floors and learn everything from the origins of potatoes to the two-step frying method used to cook the perfect frite.

Your mouth will definitely be watering by the end. Fortunately, the little café downstairs has you covered with frites, over a dozen sauces, and other tasty snacks.

This is the perfect way to warm your belly on a cold winter day!

I’m partial to the classic mayo dipping sauce as well as the mayo/ketchup combo.

6. Annual Bruges Christmas Market

The Bruges Christmas Market will run from November 25, 2022 – January 8, 2023.

Daily market hours are as follows:

Monday – Thursday & Sunday: 10:30AM – 10PM Friday & Saturday: 10:30AM – 11PM

There are three locations for the 2021 market: Grote Markt (Market Square), Simon Stevinplein, and the Minnewater Ice Rink.

Attendees can browse vendors for holiday gifts as well as indulge in everything from mulled wine to Belgian waffles and frites.

What to Eat & Drink in Bruges

Outside of trying authentic Belgian frites, you’ll obviously have to try Belgian waffles at least once. (Can you even say you came to Belgium if you don’t?)

Although waffles are a way of life here, they aren’t considered a breakfast food as they are in the states. They’re more of an anytime snack/dessert.

I learned this when we walked into a restaurant at 11:30 AM and the server informed me they were no longer serving breakfast.

However, he was happy to oblige once he realized I wanted a waffle!

Also, I highly recommend the Vol-au-Vent for a hearty, warm-your-belly option. This dish is similar to pot pie and has small meatballs inside of it. It’s a really robust and hearty meal that will leave you satisfied.

I’m also partial to the fondue. In Bruges, it’s typically prepared with Swiss and served with sliced meats and bread for dipping. There’s just something about cozying up to a warm fondue pot that soothes the soul.

Did I mention Bruges is a chocolate lover’s dream? Here, you can find multiple chocolate shops on every street.

This is the perfect opportunity to pick up some treats for Valentine’s Day!

Beer in Bruges

Bruges is all about the beer. I seriously gained a tremendous appreciation for Belgian beer after this trip.

I highly recommend doing a beer flight so that you can try multiple varieties. Or, try a Belgian Tripel if you’re not afraid of a more robust variety. This strong pale ale is made with three times the malt in the wort and has a higher ABV than many Belgian alternatives.

Our favorite spot for beer in Bruges was  2be Bar . They have an impressive  beer wall  as well as year-round outdoor seating.

That’s right, you can enjoy any of their delicious Belgian varieties while cozying up to one of their gigantic outdoor heaters!

You may also consider doing a brewery tour if you have some extra time to spend in Bruges. This is a great indoor activity that enables you to taste the best that Bruges has to offer!

What Surprised Me Most About Bruges

Although I’m a big fan of the city overall, I did encounter a few unwanted surprises here.

First, the city was much more touristy than I anticipated. I found myself asking: “Does anyone actually live  here?” at various points throughout the trip. I expected that crowds would’ve died down after the Christmas market, but it was still pretty busy in mid-January.

I was also surprised to find that Christmas shops were already closed in mid-January.

Notes About Dining Out

I was also surprised by how early restaurants stopped serving dinner. As a result, I’d suggest dining no later than about 8:30 PM.

You’ll hardly ever catch me having dinner before 9:00 PM, since I tend to dine on “Mediterranean time.”  (You can blame this on my Greece obsession.)

However, we ventured out at about 9:30 one night and almost all the restaurants had closed their kitchens or closed completely. I have a hunch that this may be a winter practice based on a conversation with a friend.

Fortunately, there was one restaurant in Grote Markt that offered us a very limited menu.

Additionally, restaurants will not serve you free tap water. You’ll have to pay for either still or sparkling bottled water. (I’ve come to realize this is pretty common practice in Europe.)

Final Notes on Bruges in Winter

Bruges offers a truly unique and historical city experience unlike any other. The streets, canals, horse-drawn carriages, and buildings will truly transport you to a simpler time. Plus, the city is undoubtedly magical in winter, in particular, provided you bundle up!

That said, Bruges isn’t a traditional city, as it lacks a metropolitan feel. Fortunately, a day trip from a larger city like Brussels can provide enough time to see most of the area’s attractions.

Alternatively, if you prefer a smaller neighborhood environment, you can base yourself in Bruges and then do a day trip to Brussels .

I sincerely hope this guide provides you with ample inspiration for a magical winter trip, no matter how long you decide to stay.

Bruges old town tour & canal cruise

Explore the long history of Bruges on a historic walking tour of the old town, and then embark on a peaceful cruise down the city’s canals. On the walking tour, your guide will bring you to see Markt, the city’s market square in the heart of the old town. Here, you can opt to climb the 366 steps to the top of the Bruges Belfry in the square for expansive views over the city.

You’ll also see Burg Square, the historic area where Bruges was founded. You’ll encounter the tallest tower in the city when you visit the Church of Our Lady, which is home to Michelangelo’s sculpture, Madonna and Child . The tour also brings you to the Lake of Love, a serene park near the Begijnhof, which Benedictine nuns still call home.

The second part of your tour is a cruise down Bruges' canals, where you can enjoy the city from another point of view.

The first four hours of this tour is a privately guided walk of Bruges’ old town, while the last hour is a cruise on the city’s canals. Private cruises aren’t available, so you’ll be on a shared guided cruise with about 15-20 other people. The walking tour is available year-round, but the canal cruise is weather-dependent, so March through October are the best months for this.

The exact order of the walking tour can vary depending on the timing of the cruise, but you can expect to see many of Bruges’ highlights. You’ll visit Markt, in the heart of Bruges’ old town. The square is wide-open, mostly traffic-free and surrounded by former guildhalls and multi-hued step-gabled houses with mismatched rooflines. The square is dominated by the 13th-century belfry, rising 83 m (272 ft) into the sky. For expansive views of the city you can climb the 366 steps to the top.

You’ll also see Burg Square, a cobblestone square where the city was founded. The square is framed by the manor of Franc of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The basilica has an intricate dark-grey Romanesque façade adorned with gilded figurines. Inside, it consists of two separate chapels, the Saint Basil Chapel and the Holy Blood Chapel, which is home to a relic containing what is believed to be the blood of Jesus Christ.

The Church of Our Lady is the tallest building in the city, with its tower reaching 116 m (379 ft) into the sky. You can admire the cross-vaulted nave, the black-and-white-tiled flooring and the heavily ornamented Baroque-style interior. The church is also home to Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child , a white-marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary with an infant Jesus.

The tour will also take you to the Lake of Love in Minnewater Park, a reservoir joined with the canal system. The peaceful lake is an excellent place to see some wildlife, especially swans which are the symbol of the city. Nearby, you can visit the adjoining Begijnhof, a group of white step-gabled houses now occupied by an order of Benedictine nuns.

The hour-long cruise will provide a different perspective of these sights, as you glide along the postcard-worthy canals ornamented with willow trees, elegant stone bridges and medieval buildings.

From touring the city by canal boat to eating the tastiest fries, here are the best things to do in Bruges © LALS STOCK / Shutterstock

Bruges is one of the most picturesque cities in Northern Europe, with photo opportunities awaiting you around every corner.

The medieval city center survived multiple invasions and wars over the last 500 years, yet miraculously kept its 15th-century architecture intact – an achievement that won it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000.

Beyond the picturesque Gothic facades, you can go sailing through the canals, learn about the Flemish Masters, or visit one of the many museums (perfect for a rainy day, of which there are many). Here's our pick of the very best experiences in Bruges .

1. See Bruges on a canal boat tour

Experience the sights and sounds of Bruges on a boat tour along the picturesque canals for just €12. Doing it on the day you arrive will help orient you in the city while the guide gives you a potted history of your surroundings. You'll pass under  Bonifacius Bridge , a popular 20th-century stone arch crossing usually thronged with snap-happy tourists, as well as the 18th-century Nepomucenus Bridge, watched over by a statue of John of Nepomuk – the patron saint of bridges.

Save some smartphone storage for Rosary Quay, though. Its name comes from the rosary bead sellers that used to dominate the area, but that's not what draws tourists here in their droves. It's the photogenic kink in the canal and the crooked, forward-leaning facades that make for incredible pictures. The boats, formerly all diesel engines, are being replaced by a fleet of fully electric vessels .

2. Break for a Belgian beer at a Bruges bar

Beer is a big part of Flemish culture, and there's no shortage of places to have a pint, so take a break from sightseeing to try a local specialty. Tucked away in a little alley near the city center, De Garre is a quirky bar with over 140 varieties of beer. Advertised as "possibly the oldest pub in Bruges," Café Vlissinghe has been pouring beers since 1515. It's still a beloved spot for tourists and residents of Bruges alike. If you're looking for a lively bar scene, head to 't Zand Square  –  Villa Gerard is popular with students and residents.

A person holds a takeaway tray containing a waffle covered in chocolate sauce outside in a medieval square.

3. Indulge your sweet tooth with waffles, pastries, and chocolates

If you have a sweet tooth, get ready to indulge in Bruges – there are chocolate, pastry, and candy shops on every street and the sweet aroma of freshly toasted waffles follows you through the city. For a beautiful and delicious waffle, go to Otto Waffle Atelier where they're made with an intricate pattern.

Aux Merveilleux De Fred  serves exquisite pastries in an equally stunning tea room. Order a Vergeoise waffle to go with your coffee. Round out your indulgence with chocolate truffles at one of the most popular chocolate shops, Chocolatier Dumon .

4. Go on an architectural walking tour of Bruges

Pack your comfortable shoes because Bruges is a place for walkers. A wander through the beautiful city center is one of the best ways to admire the Gothic and Flemish architecture. Keep your eyes open for the many treasures such as the emblematic 't Zand's 21st-century  Concert Hall , which looks like a giant, half-submerged goldfish ducking beneath the pavement; the cherry-red Barge Bridge that seemingly twists like the track on a roller-coaster; and the 13th-century Church of Our Lady , with its enormous 115m (377ft) spire. Inside you'll find Michelangelo’s serene Madonna and Child statue from 1504.

Planning tip:  Bruges Tourism Office offers free maps for self-guided walking tours .

5. Visit independent shops along Langestraat

Take a 10–15 minute walk from Markt, the heart of ancient Bruges, to Langestraat, a street with independently owned restaurants, cafes, and shops. Stop by Cherry Picker Cafe for its unique selection of vinyl records with a bar in the back of the shop before browsing for rare finds at Brocante Cafe , an antique shop and cafe. If you're looking for the perfect made-in-Bruges gift, stop by  Atelier Twee , featuring leather goods made in-house and items created by regional artisans.

6. Tour a Belgian brewery

Belgium produces some of the best beers in the world – even those that don't usually enjoy a pint can be converted after a sip. For Belgians, beer is more than a beverage, it's a tradition, with most brasseries serving beers in distinct glasses representing the breweries. Brewery De Halve Maan offers brewery tours and tastings in the heart of Bruges. Sip your chosen brew in the beer hall or catch the elusive Belgian sun on the cozy terrace.

Planning tip:  Be sure to bring your camera on a sunny day. The tour guide (weather permitting) will take you to the brewery's rooftop, which offers splendid city views.

People walk through a huge medieval square dominated by a tall Gothic tower

7. Take in the magnificent Markt, one of Europe's finest squares

A medieval masterpiece, few European plazas outdo this glorious, car-free square for sheer good looks. A poster child for Belgium, Markt has a bit of Hollywood pizzazz to it – all tall, step-gabled guild houses, glinting neo-Gothic facades, and slow, clip-clopping horse-and-carriage rides. True, some of the buildings may not be as timeless as their restored glory suggests, but little has changed since the first market here in 958 CE.

Just look to the Belfort in the northwest of the square. Finished in 1486, this 83m-high (272ft) octagonal tower was the dominating skyscraper of its day – and so it remains. Grab a coffee from one of the nearby terrace cafes and admire it all from there, or...

8. Climb Belfort for the best views of Bruges

To preserve Bruges' charm, there are no tall modern buildings in the city center. Get the best panoramas over red-tiled rooftops all the way to Zeebrugge – and a workout from climbing the 366 steps – at the top of  Belfort . This 13th-century belfry is one of the tallest points in the historic center.

Planning tip:  Numbers are limited to 70 visitors at a time for safety reasons. The queue can get quite lengthy at peak times, so arrive early to avoid them.

9. Learn about the Flemish Masters at Groeningemuseum

Given its long history, Bruges is a city of rich culture, and nowhere showcases this like the rich collection of Flemish Primitive and Renaissance works at Groeningemuseum . The art gallery features works by Flemish Masters such as Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Hugo van der Goes, and Gerard David, and is the perfect rainy day activity.

10. Enjoy an eclectic program of events at Concertgebouw

Another treat for a rainy day is the eclectic programming of exhibitions and performances at the Concertgebouw , the modern concert hall of Bruges. You can also book a tour of this stunning 21st-century architectural gem.

The exterior of the Museum Sint-Janshospitaal against the canal on a calm, blue-skied winter morning in Bruges, Belgium

11. Admire the works of Hans Memling at the Museum Sint-Janshospitaal

This impeccably restored chapel , which sits at the heart of a wonderful 12th-century hospital building, is home to six masterpieces by the revered 15th-century devotional artist Hans Memling. Undoubtedly Bruges' finest painter, certainly in his lifetime, it wasn't really until the late 19th century that interest was piqued in the innovative portraitist with shows across the world.

Here, you can admire his delicate oil work on the panels of the splendid, gilded reliquary of St Ursula, which is said to hold some of her relics. But don't miss the large triptych of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist either. It was originally the church's altarpiece.

Planning tip:  Your ticket also gives you access to the restored 17th-century pharmacy through a door at the rear of the chapel.

12. Immerse yourself in history and myths at Burg

Imagine being a square this beautiful and interesting and still not being the most-talked-about square in the city. Anywhere else in the world and the Gothic turrets of the 15th-century Stadhuis (city hall) , the charcoal-colored facade and gilded statues of the Basilica of the Holy Blood – purportedly home to a cloth stained with the blood of Jesus Christ – and the light clip-clop of the horse-drawn carriages would make Burg an unmissable banquet of medieval architecture. Here? It plays second fiddle to Markt. But is still well worth a few hours of your time.

13. Grab a budget meal around 't Zand

There are several universities in Bruges, most notably the College of Europe and the Catholic University College of Bruges, which means plenty of places to find a meal on a budget. The area around 't Zand Square has several student-friendly restaurants, cafes, and bars.

HAP Takeaway Bites uses locally sourced ingredients to make delicious sandwiches, salads and freshly pressed juices. An excellent spot for breakfast or lunch, most items cost around €5–8. For lunches less than €10, try the burgers, croquettes, and fries at Frituur-Bistro 't Bootje or dine on Syrian-style falafel, shawarmas, and wraps at Taboulé .

Pastel-colored tall buildings line a square with cafes and restaurants at the base. A cyclist whizzes by.

14. Rent a bike and go beyond the historic city center

Bruges is relatively flat, making it ideal to explore on a bike. There are several good  bike rental outfits  located around the city. Start your ride at the Kruispoort Gate, one of Bruges's four preserved medieval gates, where a bike trail leads the way to photogenic windmills such as Bonne-Chière and Sint-Janshuismolen.

If you want to go on a longer ride, consider the 90-minute roundtrip to Zeebrugge, approximately 15km (9.3 miles) each way, for a view of the choppy North Sea and lunch at a seafood restaurant.

15. Find inner peace at the begijnhof

Ah! Pure silence. Or as close as you're ever going to get in a city that swells with bus-loads of tourists each day. Built in the 13th century as a place for religious women to live piously but with the freedom to go into the city itself, this gabled, white-washed begijnhof still retains a reverent calm among its trees.

16. Take your fries seriously with frietjes at a frituur

No trip to Belgium is complete with having a cone (or three) of frietjes (fries). Belgians take their fries seriously and Bruges has plenty of frituurs –  small restaurants specializing in fries – around the city. A large portion of fries with sauce is usually around €4. Belgians love a dollop of mayo on their crispy, thick-cut fries and sometimes tuck in with unique condiments such as curry ketchup or samurai sauce (spicy mayo).

17. And then learn why fries are part of the national dish

The quirky Frietmuseum  starts with a detailed history of potatoes and their journey from Peru to Europe and helps you understand why fries became such an important part of Belgian cuisine. Bring your appetite – the museum serves crispy fries made to order with a wide selection of sauces from its own frituur .

6 Best Tours in Bruges (For A More Memorable Visit)

Bruges is the most charming city in Belgium that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. Its medieval old town with cobblestone streets, centuries-old buildings, and narrow canals is a protected UNESCO World Heritage site that will impress even the most seasoned travelers.

We live in Belgium and have already covered the main sights and attractions in Bruges on our blog in detail. However, we notice that more and more of our readers want to experience Bruges deeper and are looking for unique experiences and interesting tours with local guides.

Indeed, a good tour can make your trip so much more fun and create amazing memories for the whole family!

So in this guide, I am excited to showcase some of the very best tours you can do in Bruges . From guided city walks to off-the-beaten-path bike rides and even making your own waffles, there’s truly something for everyone. Whether you are a history buff or just want to try some yummy Belgian food, Bruges has it all.

Getting to Bruges: If you are visiting Bruges with a cruise ship, you can book a shuttle service from the cruise terminal to the center. If you are coming from any Belgian city, it’s best to take a train. If traveling from Brussels, you can also opt for a guided day tour ; some tours also visit Ghent on the same day. If coming from Amsterdam just for a day, we recommend booking a guided tour (or you will waste too much time on trains).

Best guided tours in Bruges for tourists

Here is our hand-picked selection of some of the best-rated tours in Bruges:

1. Guided City Tour with Canal Cruise

A guided city tour that includes a boat ride on the canals is the best tour to take in Bruges if you are visiting the city for the first time. It’s also a great way to see the best places in just a couple of hours.

There are several walking tours that visit the main highlights and take you on a canal cruise. They all cover top places including the main Market Square (Grote Markt) and the Belfort Tower , top sights of the old town, and Beguinage. However, starting locations and itineraries are somewhat different.

Here are the two best options that we recommend:

  • A guided tour that starts at the railway station and ends with a boat trip. With two starting times – one in the morning and one in the afternoon, this tour is a good option for those arriving in Bruges by train for just a few hours. The tour starts with a walk next to the Lake of Love (Minnewater) and ends with a canal trip from Rozenhoedkaai, which is right in the center. You can easily explore more of the old town afterward.
  • A tour starting at the Market Square. This small-group tour has a great itinerary that not only covers the musts, but also a few hidden gems. It also includes some chocolate tasting and a short guided tour at the Halve Maan Brewery. The boat trip is in the middle of the tour giving you some time to rest from all the slow walking. The tour ends at the Beguinage, which is just next to the Lake of Love which you can visit on your own. The railway station is not far from here, or you can easily return to the old town and explore further.

There are many other guided city tours to choose from, including a free walking tour (with a small reservation fee). So there is truly something for everyone’s interests and budget. Just make sure to read the itineraries and what’s included when comparing the tours so that you know exactly what to expect.

2. Belgian Waffle-Making Workshops

No visit to Belgium would be complete without tasting some of the world-famous Belgian waffles. And you will have plenty of opportunities to do that. But you will quickly realize that real Belgian waffles are totally different from what you find in the USA, for example.

So if you are looking for something a bit more special to do in Bruges, consider booking a waffle-making workshop . It’s educational, it’s fun, and most important – absolutely delicious. You can bake as many waffles as you can eat, so it saves you lunch too ;). Plus, you can take a recipe home with you and make yummy waffles for your family and friends for years to come.

Many Belgians (including my husband) like to make waffle batter with beer. If you would like to try waffles with beer, this popular workshop gives you a choice between ‘regular’ or beer waffles. It also includes Belgian beer tasting.

If you are looking for a more family-friendly option, check out this highly-rated waffle baking workshop . Here, you can also decorate your waffles with all kinds of toppings – kids (of all ages ;)) will love that!

Interesting to know: In Belgium, legal drinking age for beer and wine is 16, but most younger kids will eat waffles made with beer. I suppose, it all depends on what kind of beer and how much of it you use. When we bake waffles at home, we usually use rather light cherry beer and I’m sure most alcohol evaporates during baking.

3. Bike & Rickshaw Tours

If you like to see a lot of Bruges in a short time without having to walk much, you can also choose from various bike or e-bike tours . Just beware that most streets are cobbled so you need to be confident on a bike.

Alternatively, you can also opt for a guided rickshaw/pedicab tour . It’s the perfect way to see a lot without any effort from your side.

Here are the best tours that we recommend:

  • City highlights bike tour is a great way to see not just the main monuments in the city center, but also get a bit off the beaten path in Bruges. This retro bike tour is somewhat similar in terms of what you get to see, but it limits its group size to 10 people maximum.
  • Guided rickshaw tour . This private tour is a very relaxing way to explore the main sights of Bruges and learn some interesting facts and stories from a local.

Lake of Love and Kasteel Minnewater in Bruges

4. Self-Guided Highlights Scavenger Hunt

If you like to explore Bruges by yourself, consider booking one of the scavenger-hunt tours . They are very budget-friendly and you can explore the city at your own pace.

There are tons of self-guided tours to choose from – from city highlights to mystery tours, but also special tours for families with young children, etc.

Good to know: You will need a smartphone and internet connection for any self-guided tour ( European SIM cards work in Belgium without extra roaming fees). Also, in most cases, one scavenger tour booking is enough unless everyone in your group absolutely wants to listen to the explanation on their own phone.

TIP: The most popular and best-rated self-guided tour in Bruges is this highlights scavenger hunt . It’s focused around some of the main landmarks in Bruges and is perfect for first-time visitors who want to explore the city a bit deeper but prefer to go on their own.

If you are more interested in riddles and scavenger hunt itself, check out the Sherlock Holmes Mystery Game . With kids, you may enjoy the Peter Pan Mystery Game .

5. Belgian Food and/or Beer Tours

Belgium is world-famous for its beer and food, with a lot more to taste beyond waffles! Food tours are a great way to experience any place and also taste several different local specialities in a short time.

Unfortunately, there are not that many options when it comes to food tours in Bruges. That said, all you need is one good tour anyway, and there are a few good tours to choose from depending on your interests.

Here are the best food and/or beer tours in Bruges:

  • Food tour with 10 tastings . This highly-rated private tour is a wonderful way to get acquainted with some local specialities and explore Bruges at the same time. They also cater to vegetarians, just be sure to let them know if you have any dietary restrictions.
  • Beer and chocolate tour . This is a great tour for those who want to learn more about Belgian beer and sample a selection of traditional beers and craftwork brews. The tour also includes a visit to a brewery and – according to them – best chocolate store in the city.

6. Best Tours Near Bruges

In addition to all the amazing tours in the city, there are also several nice options for those who want to see some of the beautiful surroundings near Bruges or visit the famous WWI sites.

Here are some of the best tours from Bruges:

  • Damme & Bruges Countryside (2 hours). This e-scooter tour is great for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of Bruges old town and see some of the beautiful surroundings. Damme is a picturesque village just a few kilometers outside the city center and the trip to get there is also very scenic, especially in the summer season.
  • Bruges Countryside (4 hours). This bike tour brings you to Damme, Oostkerke, and along canals in the countryside around Bruges. If you have a few days in Bruges and are fit for a longer bike ride, this would make a great addition to any itinerary.
  • Flanders Fields Day Tour (9 hours). This highly-rated tour brings you to Ypres and World War I sites known as ‘Flanders Fields’. It’s a touching visit that I recommend to anyone visiting Belgium.

A view across Brugge-Zeebrugge Canal to the Belfry of Bruges in the Belgian city of Bruges.

How to plan a walking tour of Bruges' myths and legends

From holy vials to storied works of art, discover myths and legends on a walking tour of the Belgian city.

1. The Belfry Bruges’ most famous landmark, this 13th-century belltower has watched over the city from the market square through a series of disasters, from lightning strikes to raging fires. It’s a sensible place to start a walking tour, particularly as you can ascend the tower’s 366 steps to be rewarded with sweeping views over the city’s gothic rooftops. On the way up, admire the carillon, a vast keyboard instrument which plays tinkling tunes on 47 bells.

2. Rosary Quay A few minutes’ walk east takes you through the stately Burg Square, past the glorious gothic town hall, to Rosary Quay. This canal-side wooden dock is celebrated as the most photogenic spot in Bruges — no mean feat in a city famed for its beauty — and was named for the rosaries that were once sold here to pious pilgrims. You can follow in their footsteps and visit the neighbouring Basilica of the Holy Blood, home to a vial said to contain the blood of Christ.

3. Church of Our Lady A five-minute stroll south of the basilica — stopping en route to refuel with some Belgian confectionary at the Old Chocolate House — takes you to the mighty Church of Our Lady. Beneath its flying buttresses and baroque ornamentation lies Michelangelo’s Madonna of Bruges, arguably the city’s greatest treasure. In its 500-year-old life, this sculpture of the Virgin and baby Jesus has survived both the French Revolutionary Wars and theft by the Nazis.

4. Saint John’s Hospital Right next door is one of Bruges’ most darkly fascinating spots: one of the oldest hospitals in Europe, dating back to the 12th century. Grisly artefacts, such as vintage medical instruments and cabinets full of strange potions, will make you feel grateful for the advances in medical science over the last millennium, while an exhibition of works by the Flemish master Hans Memling includes his Shrine of St Ursula, a gilded wooden reliquary painted with religious scenes.

5. De Halve Maan You’ll have earned a drink by now, so take Maria’s Bridge over the canal, another popular photo opportunity that takes in the   city’s stunning medieval architecture, before heading to De Halve Maan. The most famous brewery in Bruges, it has been producing classic Belgian beers for 500 years and has been run by the same family for the last six generations. If you dare, try the Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel — a potent beer that’s 11% ABV.

6. Minnewater If you’re not feeling too giddy, finish your stroll at Minnewater. Also known as the Lake of Love, this tree-shaded, rectangular pool is named for star-crossed Minna and Stromberg, two legendary lovers akin to a Belgian Romeo and Juliet. Today, people flock to the surrounding park to enjoy a picnic and take in views of the swans — a symbol of Bruges’ wealth and power for centuries — which glide elegantly beneath the arches of Minnewater Bridge.

Bruges is a city with a unique medieval charm. Take a stroll along the sparkling canals, through the cobbled streets, or past the many historic buildings, and you will quickly see that this is the perfect place for a romantic getaway. Fully exploring the "Venice of the north" in just 48 hours is a challenge, but it's one we're willing to accept. Here are the best places to visit for a whistle-stop tour of this magical city.

Before it's time for an aperitif, here are a few suggestions to awaken the romantic within you. The Boniface Bridge is an ideal spot for couples, as is the Spiegelrei , Bruges's old port, where you'll have a splendid view of the canals. If a romantic walk through pretty surroundings is your thing, then head for either the Arentshof park (which is home to beautiful Easter lilies in the beguinage) or Minnewater park , where you'll find what is known as the "Lake of Love". Afterwards, it's time to take a break and soak up Belgian café culture; a word to the wise, in Belgium "cafés" are a place you're more likely to order a beer than a coffee. Café Vlissinghe , Bruges's oldest inn, has been around since 1515 and exudes an incomparable sense of nostalgia. Indulge in a draught Brugse Zot or Tripel Karmeliet beer, or one of the many non-alcoholic options. If you're feeling peckish before dinner, browse the snacks and appetizers on offer.

If you didn't go for the brewery option, then all of the day's sightseeing and shopping might have made you thirsty. The solution is to head down Bruges's narrowest street to the wonderful Staminee De Garre . The menu of this characterful café offers no fewer than 140 beers, from the house tripel to the most famous breweries and a few lesser-known gems. Not enough choice for you? Check out 't Brugs Beertje , where you'll have 300 different beers to pick from.
