I thought this was a bus which ran every hour the same as in most British city tours so didn't realise you had to book a time, only 2 tours a day, 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon got the hotel to clarify this. Enjoyed this tour but unfortunately the engine noise stopped us from hearing the commentary some of the time. Please be careful with jewellery when waiting for the bus at 2.30 pm my husband got his gold st Christopher snatched from his neck by 2 youths on pedal cycles.

If you choose food, you’ll explore some of the city’s most legendary, traditional food spots – making sure you try a variety of classic dishes and drinks.  For nature views, you can’t miss the white-sand beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, or the breathtaking views from the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Rio De Janeiro Tour Guide

Getting there.

Rio de Janeiro is a popular destination, no matter the time of year. However, flights are even more expensive during Brazilian summer, which is from December to March. Carnival happens on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, so if you’re coming in February, plan on big crowds and book further in advance!

Most major airlines serve Rio’s Antônio Carlos Jobim Airport, aka “Galeāo Airport” with some including a layover in São Paulo. Located just 12 miles from downtown Rio, it’s not too difficult to get into the city from the airport.

Getting Around

As Brazil’s second biggest city, Rio de Janeiro is complex and full of sights and sounds. Despite this, it’s surprisingly easy to move around!

Metro – We love Rio’s metro system! Their 3 lines all feature AC, are easy to use, and are extremely clean. Line 1 runs from Ipanema-General Osório to Uruguai in the north. Line 2 kind of crosses over line 1, going from Botafogo to Pavuna. Line 3 goes between Ipanema-General Osório and the east side of Barra da Tijuca.

Bus – Rio’s BRS runs in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, and Barra. It’s easy to see the key destination as it’s lit up in the front of the bus.

Bicycle – Rio de Janeiro features tons of bike paths – particularly along the coastlines. The orange city Bike Rio cycles are all over the place, and you can use them via app. Most include English instructions.

Light Rail – Launched in 2016, the light rail has seen much success with its 26 stations located around the city.

Taxi – Yellow taxis are easy to hail, thanks to apps like 99Taxis or Easy Taxi. These are generally very safe, affordable, and easy to use.

Moto Taxi – Some places (usually in the favelas) will have moto taxis which are great for short rides. However, you’ll likely not be hanging out in this area.

Where to Stay

Finding cheap AirBnBs or hostels is easy in Rio, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we recommend those areas. The coastline in the south is typically the best, so look at these areas: Leme, Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon.

Leme – Relatively small, laidback, and easy to get to Copacabana from. It’s nice, but there isn’t much to do.

Copacabana – Generally more expensive, much more to do, noisier, but you have tons of options for whatever you’re looking for.

Ipanema – Similar to Copacabana in that there’s a ton to do, you have the beach right there, though it’s a bit more expensive as well.

Leblon – This is probably the priciest area of the bunch, and further from the main tourist attractions and downtown areas. However, it’s very nice, safe, and easy to get to other areas with public transportation.

Restaurants and Eating Out

Brazil is known for its blend of African and European traditions, which is reflected heavily in local food.

  • Feijoada – If you ask a carioca what their favorite typical dish is, most likely, it would be feijoada. This comforting bowl of stewed beans, pork, gravy, potatoes, and more is savory and rich in flavor.Best feijoada – Cantinho do Senado or Feira do Lavradio
  • Churrascaria – You’ve likely been to one of these before in your home country, but if you haven’t, it’s pretty much an all-you-can-eat steakhouse! You get to select which meats you want, and the server will come over to you with a skewer and serve the amount you want.Best churrascaria: Verne Provenzano, Gaucha Churrascaria, Fogo de Chao, or Churrascaria Palace.
  • Pāo de Queijo – These delicious, warm cheesy bread balls are truly addictive! The texture is half the pleasure, with a crispy outside and chewy inside. You can find good pāo de queijo pretty much anywhere.
  • Coxinha de Galinha – These delicious chicken fritters are deep-fried and filled with parsley, onions, mashed potatoes (at times), and are dipped in ketchup, chimichurri, and other tasty options. You can find them at a lot of bars, but Bar Bracarense and bar Teto Solar have some particularly delicious ones.
  • Brigadeiro – Here’s one for those with a sweet tooth! Brigadeiro is a round little hot chocolate cake with butter and condensed milk. They’re often known as “Brazilian truffles” due to their similarly rich texture.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Rio definitely has a crazy nightlife, and there’s something for everyone!

The neighborhood of Lapa has insane street parties every weekend, and is definitely worth checking out – even if you aren’t much of a partier!

Lapa – Located in central Rio, the neighborhood of Lapa is known for its wild street parties every weekend! Not only that, but it’s lined with plenty of bars and nightclubs, depending on what you’re looking for.

Botafogo – If you love kicking back with a beer or two, you’ll enjoy the main street of Botafogo: Voluntarios da Patria. It’s also great if you’d like to go out on a weeknight.

Samba – Samba is definitely the owner of Rio’s nightlife, and we highly recommend you check out a traditional samba club while you’re there. Trapiche Gamboa is the top of our list and is known for its great music, friendly locals, and delicious bar food.

Pedra do Sal is known as the birthplace of samba, though, and every Monday and Friday night they throw massive samba street parties where all kinds of street vendors and entertainers show up!

If you’re into something more lowkey, Bip Bip is a fantastic choice. It’s nothing grandiose, but features great live music and cheap beer.

Nightclubs – Rio has so many clubs, it’s hard to name or even visit them all. As we just mentioned, most of the big ones are located in Lapa. One of the most notorious is Rio Scenarium with all kinds of interesting décor like carnival masks and Asian ceramics .

Fosfobox is a unique underground spot and the music style changes seemingly every night! From rap to electronic to reggaeton, you’ll meet some cool characters here.

Casa de Matriz and Teatro Odisseia are managed by the same people, but equally fun for the younger crowd!

Bars – Perhaps you want something swanky or just want some high-quality, tasty drinks. We first recommend Explorer Bar, located in the trendy Santa Teresa neighborhood. It’s perfect if you’re a craft cocktail connoisseur or enjoy fantastic terrace views .

Bar da Cachaça in Lapa is one of the best places to try the famous Brazilian liquor, and has easily the biggest selection of flavors. We recommend the açai and ginger types! If you’re looking for a spot to prepare yourself mentally before a night at a club, this is it. You’ll find people from all backgrounds here, and everyone’s welcome.

Mundeco Bar is known as “the bar of the world” and is fantastic if you’d like to meet locals or other tourists. It has local and international food with all kinds of delicious drinks to try.

In Rio de Janeiro, summers tend to be short yet intense. They can be quite wet and cloudy, while winters are long yet more comfortable. It doesn’t rain much in the winter, with usually clear skies. The good news is it will never really get too hot nor too cold. We recommend going from mid-may to late September for the best weather.

Attractions

Christ the Redeemer – By far, the biggest tourist attraction in Rio is Christ the Redeemer. Sitting on top of the already-tall Corcovado Peak, the statue started in 1922 and required a vertical cog train to reach the base of the summit unless you want to climb hundreds of steps to reach the top. Today, you can simply use an elevator or escalator to get there.

Copacabana – Copacabana’s like the more “sporty” neighbor of Ipanema. Surfing, soccer, volleyball – you’ll find it all here. Fort Copacabana former military base with a wartime museum is also quite interesting to check out!

Ipanema – We all know the song, and when you see the soft white sand and beautiful blue waves, it’s no wonder why it inspires so many. There’s the “upscale” area in the south and you can find plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants, art galleries, clubs, and more entertainment here.

Sugarloaf Mountain – Rising 1,300 feet over Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf can be summitted by a glass-walled cable car with full, 360 views! The view from the top is absolutely worth it.

Jardim Botanico – Looking for amazing photo ops? Perhaps an area where you can just let your mind go and soak in all the beauty? This botanical garden is definitely what you’re looking for. With over 8,000 species of plants, a water lily pond, and fantastic museum, it’s great for a date or for going on a relaxing nature walk.

Maracana Stadium – Brazil has one of the most legendary soccer histories, and it all starts here. It could once hold the highest capacity of any soccer venue in the world: almost 200,000 people in 1950 when it opened!

Parque Lage – This is an absolutely gorgeous, tranquil palazzo which houses the school of visual arts along with delicious coffee and “hidden gem” views of Christ the Redeemer in the distance.

  • Make sure to watch the weather forecast. Most of the top attractions aren’t quite as, well, attractive, when it’s rainy. However, the crowds are much smaller, if nonexistent on these days!
  • Get the Rio Card. This prepaid card covers the VLT, buses, and metro and you don’t have to worry about buying a ticket each ride.
  • Try hiking up Urca Hill. The Sugar Loaf bondinho ride has 2 sections, and the first half is Urca Hill. If you’re looking for a rather easy hike, try hiking up it! Then you get the reward of cruising to Sugar Loaf with the endorphins pumping through your veins.
  • Don’t drink the tap water. Just drink bottled water, and make sure the cap is actually sealed before drinking it.
  • Dress down. Cariocas are very casual, laidback people. Pack some flip-flops, shorts, and you’re ready to go!

A Complete Guide to the San Antonio Riverwalk Boats: Are Go Rio River Cruises Worth It?

Second only to the Alamo, a Go Rio River Cruise down the famed San Antonio Riverwalk is one of the most popular tourist attractions (and one of the best things to do ) in San Antonio. These brightly colored barges provide a great way to experience the river and see quite a bit of the downtown area of San Antonio at the same time, which is why they appeal to tourists.

Go Rio 2

But just because they hold tourist appeal doesn’t mean they are total tourist traps. If you are interested in taking a Go Rio River Cruise but want to know if it is worth your time, read on!

I have all the information and details you need to know to make your river cruise more than just an activity, but a great memory of your time in the Alamo city.

Kelsey Kennedy headshot-3

We’re Kelsey and Sara , two local foodies with a combined 29 years of eating in San Antonio, two travel books , and millions of blog readers. We adore local spots, rarely visit chain restaurants, and we aren't afraid to tell you the truth. After spending thousands of our own $$$ at hundreds of local hot spots, we're sharing the best with you.

What are my options for taking a Go Rio River Cruise on the San Antonio river?

Go Rio 8

You have two options for taking a river barge through downtown San Antonio – a narrated river cruise or a river shuttle . Both are operated by Go Rio but serve different purposes.

Go Rio narrated river cruises are 35-40 minute long boat tours of the downtown part of the San Antonio Riverwalk . You and a number of other guests will be ferried throughout downtown while your boat captain shares information about San Antonio, its history, and the buildings you are seeing. Rides begin and end at the same point of departure.

River shuttles, on the other hand, function more like taxis on the river. There are 15 stops between downtown and the Museum Reach part of the river, and you can get on and off to explore, as you please. Just look for Go Rio shuttle stop signs along the river level of the Riverwalk.

Shuttles run both northbound and southbound on a set schedule from 12pm to 8pm daily. A one day unlimited ticket runs $20.50/person, and a three day ticket is $29.50. Go Rio also offers a monthly pass for local residents for $27.50.

When do the river boats operate?

Go Rio 13

Narrated cruises run daily between 10am and 10pm and river shuttles operate between 12pm and 8pm.

Boat operations are suspended any time there is a major downtown event (like a river parade) or inclement weather, so keep an eye on Go Rio’s website and Instagram for info on closures or service suspensions.

When is the best time to take a Go Rio narrated river cruise?

GO RIO Christmas River Cruise

The absolute best time to take a narrated river cruise is between Thanksgiving and New Years when the Riverwalk holiday lights are lit . Cruise guides will also decorate their boats with holiday lights, and it is an absolutely magical experience to float down the SA river underneath thousands of twinkling lights. This is far and away my most favorite thing to do in San Antonio!

But if you cannot come during Christmas, you will still be able to enjoy your river cruise during other times of the year. That said, given the punishing heat of San Antonio summers and the fact that cruises are often in direct sunlight with little to no breeze, I recommend avoiding a river cruise between the months of June and September . You will be way more comfortable once temps dip below 90°.

If you have to make your visit during the summer, try to take your Go Rio River Cruise during the coolest hours of the day between 10am and noon, or 7pm and 10pm. Be sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, water, and sunscreen.

How much does a narrated river cruise cost?

Go Rio 14 La Mansion

Narrated river cruises (which are available in both English and Spanish), run $14.50/adults and $8.50/kids. Senior and military discounted tickets are available for $11.50, and local SA residents can ride for $12.50/person with an ID.

Go Rio River Cruise tickets can also be purchased as a combo with the Tower of the Americas (you must purchase these in person at a Go Rio Ticket Booth), or as part of the San Antonio Citypass .

Where can I buy tickets for a Go Rio River Cruises?

Go Rio 17

Tickets can be purchased online , or in person at a Go Rio ticket booth.

Where can I a board narrated river cruises?

Go Rio 7

There are three river-level departure points for narrated river cruises. The first, and busiest, departs from the Rivercenter Mall at 809 E. River Walk. The second busiest departure point is the Historia Ticket Booth, located at 706 River Walk. And the third location is the Aztec Ticket Booth, located at 731 River Walk.

To board, head to the river-level for one of the three departure points, and look for the Go Rio sign and boarding line. Boats run continuously throughout the day.

What to expect on a Go Rio River Cruise?

Go Rio 16

First, expect there to be a line to board. Tickets are neither date nor time stamped and there aren’t reserved time slots. You simply buy your tickets and get in line to board. Typically, the lines move very quickly and if you avoid riding during weekends (which are crazy busy – even more so if they conflict with school holidays), you are unlikely to wait more than 15-20 minutes. ( Protip – board from the Aztec ticket booth to further mitigate lines ).

The San Antonio river is all of about 3 feet deep and doesn’t particularly flow, so don’t anticipate a wild boat ride . It’s exceedingly smooth and even the people most prone to motion sickness are unlikely to have any trouble with the motion of the boat.

Upon departure, your boat ride will take you through the busiest part of the Riverwalk’s downtown loop . You’ll run by a number of prominent buildings and hotels including the Rivercenter Mall, Hilton Palacio del Rio, Briscoe Western Art Museum, and more.

Just don’t plan on being able to see the Alamo from your Go Rio River Cruise. The Alamo isn’t on the Riverwalk, nor is it visible from any part of the river, so you’ll have to make your way there at a later time. (But if you choose to depart from the Rivercenter Mall, just head outside the back part of the mall, and you’ll walk right out onto Alamo Plaza.)

Are there any special cruise options or events?

Go RIO River Cruise

Yes! Go Rio offers both seasonal cruise events and special cruise options . These include sunset cocktail cruises, Oktoberfest beer tasting cruises, ghost tours, and holiday river parade viewing parties.

You can also rent a Go Rio river barge and driver for dinner cruises, Christmas caroling cruises, or other private charters. Private rental is limited by date/time and can be requested online.

Are Go Rio River Cruises Worth It?

Go Rio 4

Absolutely! I’ve lived in SA for the last 21 years and still enjoy taking the occasional cruise. It is a great way to see the city’s architecture, learn about San Antonio’s history, and to just get the lay of the land as you begin your vacation.

And given how short the narrated cruises are, they don’t take a ton of time away from anything else you may want to do while you are here. I highly encourage all visitors to SA, or locals who have just been too cool for school and avoided it, to give it a go and take a Go Rio River Cruise.

Knicks' Hart pays tribute to great-uncle Elston Howard with first pitch, tour

Bryan Hoch

NEW YORK -- Josh Hart has turned in numerous strong performances in his year-plus with the Knicks, but he’s not the first member of his family to enjoy sports stardom in New York City.

Hart tossed a ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night to pay homage to his great-uncle, former Yankees catcher Elston Howard , who was the first African-American player to wear the club’s pinstripes.

The Yankees gifted Hart a jersey bearing Howard’s uniform No. 32, and Hart was guided into Monument Park, where he was able to pose for photographs with Howard’s retired number and plaque.

The 29-year-old Hart never met Howard, who passed away in 1980, but he has long felt a connection with the barrier-breaking Bomber. Hart’s father, Moses, was Howard’s nephew.

“Someone who’s in your family who got to the highest level, who won [four] World Series championships, was an MVP, is someone you look up to, is somebody you aspire to be in your respective sport,” Hart told NBC Sports Philadelphia in 2016, when he was playing for Villanova.

“I used him as a role model, just everything he was able to do: The first Black player to play for the Yankees. The character that he had is something that I try to resemble. Dad was always telling me stories about when he used to go to the ballpark and watch him play and just learn from him.”

Before Tuesday’s game, Hart also met with Yankees manager Aaron Boone, then spent several minutes chatting during batting practice with Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Volpe.

An excellent defensive catcher with a reliable bat, Howard played 13 seasons with the Yankees from 1955-67, earning honors as the American League’s Most Valuable Player in 1963.

Over a career that began in the Negro Leagues and included a late stint with the Red Sox, Howard batted .274 with 168 home runs and 775 RBIs.

After his playing days, Howard became a trusted coach with the Yankees, helping the club to its 1977 and ’78 World Series championships.

“It’s someone that I look up to, someone that I always wished I was able to meet,” Hart said. “Hopefully, a couple of generations down, someone in my family will be saying the same thing about me.”
