“This is a celebration!” proclaimed Metallica’s James Hetfield midway through the band’s set at the first-ever all-metal “Power Trip” festival . His comment was actually an understatement: While major metal festivals have been staged for decades, this one placed six of the world’s most legendary heavy metal and hard rock bands in history on one stage at the Polo Grounds in Indio, Calif. — home of Coachella festival and, of course, “Desert Trip,” the similarly billed 2016 classic-rock super-festival that featured Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Roger Waters, Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

Popular on Variety

If you’re thinking the crowd consisted largely of aging Beavis’ and Buttheads, you’re not wrong: One very awesome official tee shirt featured that duo headbanging on site, and the “newest” group in the lineup, Tool, released their first EP 31 years ago. And though many metalheads’ dreams of collaborations and reunions with past band members didn’t come to fruition, the fest was a testament to what nearly all of these long-running acts do best: hard-rocking classics and stage shows filled with various forms of over-the-toppedness, and with two acts playing per day to allow for proper headlining sets.

Worse, Guns N’ Roses, who have essentially been on one long tour since three key members reunited in 2016, played an over-long three-hour set that would have been much stronger if it was tighter. And while lead guitarist Slash has never sounded better, the same can’t be said for singer Axl Rose, whose vocals were inconsistent, perhaps due to the dry desert air.

Thankfully, rock valhalla arrived on day 2: Judas Priest and AC/DC were undeniable highlights of the weekend, with the former relentlessly blasting through hits like “A Touch Of Evil” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” with full confidence and a sound-mix that showed off 72-year old singer Rob Halford’s near-operatic range, which he somehow delivered in a series of leather outfits despite the 90-degree-plus heat. Founding guitarist Glenn Tipton, who is suffering from Parkinsons’ Disease, joined the band for their encore, a family-minded move that was clearly relished by the band and their fans.

The nearly sold-out crowd was swelling with flashing red devil horns by the time AC/DC took the stage for their first show since 2016, reuniting with singer Brian Johnson (who took a leave of absence that year for hearing related problems) and slammed the field with a 24-song set that included nearly every song a fan could hope for: “Back in Black,” “Dirty Deeds,” “Hell’s Bells,” “For Those About To Rock,” “You Shook Me All Night Long,” “High Voltage,” “Highway to Hell,” and many more, delivering a great reminder that they’re among the most influential rock bands of all time.

The final day was an ode to two different brands of intensity, with Tool — an outlier in the lineup, as they’re more associated with the ‘90s alt-rock movement than classic metal — playing a preposterously loud, overly ambitious set of their proggy, moody ear-blasts amid surreal psychedelic videos depicting skeletons, body parts, and shape-shifting aliens. Sadly, they do a disservice to fans further back by not allowing close-ups of them playing to appear on the video screens, leaving the audience to wonder whether all of those drum sounds come from superhuman skin-pounder Danny Carey (spoiler from the front: they do).

Power Trip was billed as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see all these high-level heavy bands at once, and though there were some squandered opportunities to make the sets themselves stand out from what each of these bands does night after night on tour, devil horns were raised, countless beers were consumed, and ears were blown: a success by any suitable metric.

Tool and Metallica close out the last day of Power Trip in style

Tool and Metallica are two distinctly different bands, so, naturally, they brought two vastly different shows to the same audience Sunday night at Power Trip.

But there was a third band we couldn't help to compare them with: AC/DC.

It's probably unfair to compare the performance of one band to another, particularly when one is as beloved as AC/DC, and is playing its first live show in more than seven years. But while Tool sounded crisp and loud, and thousands appeared to enjoy the band's set at the festival, it inevitably felt like a let down after AC/DC, and as festivalgoers were gearing up for a highly anticipated show from Metallica.

Metallica, on the other hand, understood their assignment. Closing out a once-in-a-lifetime festival such as Power Trip is no easy task, and the California rockers didn't disappoint on Sunday night,

Power Trip proves itself to be an international affair

What’s the furthest someone traveled to Power Trip? It’s hard to say, but Indio resident Leonard Ortiz has something that provides answers. Since Friday, Ortiz has collected signatures from attendees and their origins on a California state flag. Some of the attendees who signed included residents of Australia, Nepal, Austria, and Colombia. Ortiz said there was also “a lot of Mexico on there.”

Ortiz said he got the idea to track signatures at Power Trip from attending Metallica concerts and seeing fans with flags from their home states doing the same.

“I just thought it would be cool to do (at Power Trip),” because I knew that AC/DC and Iron Maiden have a following from all over the world, and I want to put it (the flag) up in my mancave. People are really digging it, and I’ve only had one person tell me no when I’ve asked them to sign for whatever reason,” Ortiz said.

The most rockstar-worthy burger at Power Trip comes from Grill 'Em All

There’s one food vendor in the South Lounge area of the festival that gets our unofficial award for Most Clever Play on Words: the metal-inspired and Alhambra-based burger restaurant Grill ‘Em All, which is a take on Metallica’s 1983 debut album “Kill ‘Em All.”

Desert Sun reporter Andrew John tried the AC/DC burger and enthusiastically said “It’s good!” after taking his first bite.

The restaurant is known for showing pro wrestling and a selection of burgers named after metal icons such as Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica and more.

Holy Dive Bar provides sports fans and non-sports fans alike a shaded place to kick back, grab a drink

Rob Vollgraf traveled to Power Trip from Northern California with the understanding that he’d be able to watch his Las Vegas Raiders at the Holy Dive Bar. He'd heard about the setup inside Empire Polo Club, but was skeptical about whether it would be anything substantial.

On Sunday, the festivalgoer admitted he was pleasantly surprised.

“They’ve done an outstanding job here,” said Vollgraf, wearing a black Raiders shirt. “This blew away my expectations.”

Tool brings fans from around the world to the polo grounds

When Alejandro Grijalva Duran saw the lineup announcement in March for Power Trip and noticed the band Tool was part of it, he immediately contacted his son, Juan Pablo Grijalva Saenz. The two purchased tickets and made travel arrangements to Indio from Chihuahua, Mexico.

On Sunday, the father and son had just waited in line at Tool’s merchandise booth and was taking pictures with a poster they'd purchased. Power Trip is the first time the two will see the band perform.

“(Tool) is a unique band,” Grijalva Saenz said. “You see the lineup and all the classic rock bands, having Tool in the lineup at this festival is mind-blowing. Their concept in music is different than other bands like Judas Priest, AC/DC and Iron Maiden, so it’s a unique occasion to see Tool at this festival and venue.”

Grijalva Duran is a longtime fan, and said there are limited opportunities to see Tool in Mexico, who typically perform in cities such as Monterrey or Guadalajara.

“I like a lot of Tool’s music and have been a fan since the beginning,” said Grijalva Duran.

Real metal fans take their grandkids to Power Trip

Brooklyn Harper and Illy Pirylis of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, both 17, have been enjoying Power Trip this weekend with their grandmother, 59-year-old Kerri Yingst of Hobe Sound, Florida. But it's not the first time they've rocked out at a concert together.

It's the third festival the trio have attended together since the 2022 Welcome to Rockville festival in Daytona Beach.

On Saturday afternoon, all three were excited to see the first performance by AC/DC in seven years and spent over an hour standing in line at the band's merchandise tent after the gates opened. Yingst referred to her granddaughters as her "concert buddies"

“I didn’t know they liked my music,” Yingst said. “I was (in New Jersey) visiting and I heard Black Sabbath coming from the bedroom, and I’m like ‘Wait a minute, maybe they’re just on YouTube.’ I go about my business and go back upstairs, and I asked them, ‘Do you like that?’ and they said ‘Yeah!’ That’s when we found Welcome to Rockville and started going to festivals together.”

AC/DC starts out strong despite seven-year performance hiatus

Shortly after AC/DC performed “Shoot to Thrill” about an hour into their Saturday set at Power Trip, CNL Executive Transportation owner and operator Craig Blucher was heading towards the exit to give a client a ride.

But as he walked, the San Diego resident who has seen AC/DC seven times described the set as “epic.”

Blucher’s first time seeing AC/DC was during the original lineup era featuring original frontman Bon Scott, who died in 1980. He also caught the band’s comeback tour that same year with current vocalist Brian Johnson.

Since AC/DC released the album “Power Up” in 2020, the band hasn’t played together live, meaning Saturday’s performance was its first show in seven years.

Even though AC/DC is celebrating 50 years, the band hasn't announced a new album or any plans to tour, leaving many to speculate whether Power Trip may be the group's last performance.

When asked if he thinks it will be the last, Blucher said he hopes not.

“They need to stay healthy and they’re getting old. These old timers don’t live forever,” Blucher said.

Judas Priest announces new album, brings out Glenn Tipton

Judas Priest replaced Ozzy Osbourne as the first band on the Power Trip Day 2 schedule, but they didn't act like anyone's second choice.

After five decades, the English heavy metal group proved it still has plenty of gas in the tank, far exceeding expectations. The crowd cheered as Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" played as the intro, but was followed by a few moments of silence before a graphic showed on the video screens announcing Judas Priest's upcoming album, "The Invincible Shield," which is due out March 8.

Perhaps the best moment of the set was the encore, which featured guitarist Glenn Tipton, who retired from the band in 2018 due to Parkinson's disease. Tipton performed with the group during the last three songs of the set: classics "Metal Gods," "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight."

Coachella has 'Spectra,' Power Trip has the rocker cactus

While concertgoers are not allowed inside "Spectra," the popular illuminated installation that features a winding ramp, right next to it is a new piece of art that has many lined up to take a selfie with.

A blue devil-horned-shaped cactus has caught the attention of many here at Power Trip. It has provided a perfect photo-op for this metal festival, with Spectra, the ground’s iconic Ferris wheel and the mountains of La Quinta providing a cool backdrop.

Power Trip's hottest accessory will cost you $20, and sellers prefer cash

One thing most festivalgoers probably didn't expect at Power Trip, which markets itself very openly as a cashless festival, is a vendor that asks for cash. That's exactly what fans are facing when they go to purchase light-up AC/DC devil horn headbands at one of the various vendor carts scattered across the festival grounds today.

Although these vendors technically take credit cards (because they have to to be part of the festival), the signs on the carts read "$ CASH IS KING !!!"

The night's hottest accessory, which will set you back $20, is a nod to AC/DC co-founder, lead guitarist, songwriter, and only remaining founding member Angus Young, who popularized the devil horn symbol by using his two index fingers to form two horns above his head while he performs.

Judas Priest proves to be the most punctual band of Power Trip thus far

Judas Priest just took the stage, just a few minutes later than scheduled, unlike the Friday performers who were 20 minutes (Iron Maiden) and 40 minutes (Guns N' Roses) behind schedule. Now let's see if they can make Ozzy proud.

Group of fans decide to push through the Power Trip gates early

Those of us who entered Day 2 of Power Trip through the Red Path/camping area got a surprise Saturday when a group of rowdy festivalgoers decided they didn't want to wait any longer and pushed the gates open. Security nearby let it happen, seemingly because they were going to open the gates themselves a few minutes later, and because those who pushed through were hit by a wall of metal detectors and bag checkers on the other side of the gate.

Guns' N' Roses delivers the hits to close out the first day of Power Trip

Guns N' Roses put on a phenomenal show of heavy rock 'n' roll hits and treated festivalgoers to highlights of the band's career, even paying tribute to Sir Paul McCartney's 50th anniversary of the James Bond anthem "Live And Let Die." The two-hour set was full of stunning video production and lasers, but notably no pyrotechnics.

Even though the band was 40 minutes late for its headlining performance, the crowd was calm and there were no signs of the old days when the band would appear hours late or not at all. When the festival went dark and the band's strange animated psychedelic visuals appeared, the crowd was on its feet, screaming in anticipation.

Starting with "It's So Easy," frontman Axl Rose appeared like a lightning rod and the rest of the band, which also features original members guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, were precise in every note.

Our highs and lows of Power Trip Day 1: Where's the good food hiding?

OK, so festival food is famously never great, but Coachella always includes some trendy (and mouthwatering) Asian food from LA and Stagecoach always has delicious BBQ (when Guy Fieri's involved, you know it's good), so what is Power Trip going to be notable for cuisine-wise? So far, crappy grilled cheese.

That might be on me for ordering something a bit odd, but I thought you couldn't mess up grilled cheese! It's so simple! Tomorrow I'll be going in a totally different direction and heading straight for the booth of a Palm Springs favorite: Sandfish.

Read up on our other highs and lows from the first day of the festival here.

Parking causes headaches on Power Trip Day 1, leads some to leave early

Parking for those who tried to get in after 4:30 p.m. today was reportedly out-of-this-world difficult (our own photographer nearly ran out of gas in the middle of Miles Avenue because traffic controlers forced him to circle the venue so many times), which seems to be the reason why many people were seen leaving the festival after the first hour of Guns N' Roses' set.

I can't blame them for wanting to beat the traffic, and I can't help but wonder how long it's going to take me to get out after Guns N' Roses is done playing ... moral of the story: get here as early as possible tomorrow, festivalgoers.

Iron Maiden delivers theatrical, energetic set to kick off the night

As Iron Maiden kicked off the first set of Power Trip performing "Caught Somewhere In Time," frontman Bruce Dickinson appeared as if he stepped into the present day from a futuristic sci-fi film set.

That post-apocalyptic vibe continued throughout the stellar performance, which included stage visuals showing the flux capacitor from the 1985 time travel comedy film "Back to the Future."

Metal fans came from all over the world for this event

As the rumors began circulating about Power Trip in March, Rob Myers of Hershey, Pennsylvania created the Facebook community “Power Trip Festival Group,” which has over 10,000 members. On Friday afternoon, Myers met a fraction of the group in front of the Ferris wheel for a group photo. A group member brought a California state flag and is having members sign it as he meets them at the festival.

Myers said he has created similar groups for festivals such as the Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival in Mansfield, Ohio and estimates 5,000 attendees from all around the world and demographics joined the Power Trip group during April.

“People had interest in seeing six powerhouse acts all at once,” Myers said. “These bands have international recognition – Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica – even in Europe, you don’t see all three of those bands at one festival. You may see one, but you’re not going to get all at once.”

The members of the group have posted invites for carpooling to the festival, social gatherings in the area and even shared travel tips for those new to the Coachella Valley. There’s a stronger sense of community among metal fans for this festival than the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach country music festival.

“If you go to any metal festival, especially if you’re in camping, you’re never going to have an empty stomach, an empty cup or go without anything you need,” Myers said. “I have met grandmothers and mothers at metal festivals and they’re the ones helping those who say ‘Hey, I need this’ or ‘I ran out of this.’ Everybody just wants to take care of each other. With metal, there are different emotions, some of these people have been hurt and have a stronger sense of empathy. I’ve noticed people who have been through something, metal is their healing."

Our first impression of the festival: spacious

Although it was crowded by the entrance, once the gates opened 18 minutes behind schedule, our first impression of the festival was that it's wonderfully spread out. Nobody's on top of each other, and even though the merch tents were Coachella-level busy less than 15 minutes into the start of the festival, the Iron Maiden-specific and Guns N' Roses-specific booths had shockingly small lines.

This is also a little nerdy of us to notice, but the famed Coachella/Stagecoach Ferris wheel (aka Le Grande Wheel) is back with new open-air cars (as opposed to the traditional enclosed cars we're used to at the other two festivals).

Power Trip: Gates are open and crowd has cool cross-generational vibe

The gates are open at Power Trip but the music has yet to start. The crowd so far consists of lots of big groups and families with adult children. "How you holding up mom?" was heard from a man who appeared to be in his late 30s or early 40s.

Those who attended the original "Trip" ... Desert Trip in 2016 that featured the kings of classic rock ... will understand.

Also notable about the first hour on scene: It's hot. Overheard waiting to get through the gate: “I’m sweating so much I’m losing my buzz, it’s terrible!”

Headed to Power Trip but don't want to miss the game? You can experience both

Goldevoice is typically all about the music. But this weekend at Power Trip, the promoter is offering a rare opportunity to watch live sports at one of its bar areas within the festival.

All weekend long, festivalgoers can head to the Holy Dive Bar to watch the following televised sports:

  • Thursday: NFL Chicago @ Washington
  • Friday: MLB Playoffs
  • Saturday: MLB Playoffs
  • Saturday: NCAA Football
  • Sunday: NFL Football

Power Trip pre-game: Free tattoos at AC/DC-themed pop-up bar in Indio

AC/DC will hit the stage for the first time in seven years during the second day of Power Trip, but you don't have to wait until Saturday to get in on the fun.

Club 5 Bar in downtown Indio has officially opened as a pop-up fan experience called the AC/DC High Voltage Dive Bar , featuring collectible rock relics, unique Easter eggs, a beer garden food trucks and, perhaps most notably, free tattoos of the many different AC/DC logos over the band's 50-year history.

If you're looking for a place outside the festival grounds to honor the gods of rock, this is your spot.

Power Trip special guests: Who we think might make a stage cameo

Would it even be a Goldenvoice festival without surprise special guests? Here's a few we're hoping to see (and yes, some are far-fetched, but we can dream):

With Guns N' Roses:

  • Misfits frontman Glenn Danzig (to sing "Attitude")
  • Bob Dylan (to sing that cover of "Knockin' On Heavens Door")

With AC/DC:

  • AC/DC could quite possibly bring out any rockers, but ... wouldn't it be amazing if they brought out actor/singer Jack Black for the cover of "It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" from the movie "School of Rock"?

With Metallica:

  • King Diamond (to sing "Mercyful Fate")
  • St. Vincent, Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor, or another artist who performed on the "The Metallica Blacklist"

Power Trip set times: When will Tool, Guns 'N Roses, Metallica take the stage?

Need some help planning your Power Trip? Here are the set times :

  • Friday, Oct. 6:  Iron Maiden at 6:45 p.m., Guns N' Roses at 9:25 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 7:  Judas Priest at 6:45 p.m., AC/DC at 9:25 p.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 8:  Tool at 6:55 p.m., Metallica at 9:35 p.m.

Where is Power Trip festival 2023?

Power Trip, which features six heavy metal bands from Friday, Oct. 6 to Sunday, Oct. 8, is being held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Music-lovers likely know (or know of) the venue as the home to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach country music festival, which are held on the lush grounds at 81-800 51st Ave. over three weekends in April.

But this isn't the first October "Trip" staged by Goldenvoice. Desert Trip, featuring Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Neil Young and Promise of the Real, Roger Waters and Paul McCartney , was held at the polo grounds over two October weekends in 2016. It was heralded as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of the biggest names in classic rock on one stage.

At Power Trip, Guns N’ Roses ditches spectacle as it polishes the messy past

Axl Rose has history at the Empire Polo Club.

In 2016, the Guns N’ Roses frontman reunited with the core members of his menacing and flamboyant hard rock band to headline Coachella, the annual desert mega-festival that goes down on this grassy expanse two hours east of Los Angeles.

He returned last year for a surprise drop-in with Carrie Underwood , of all people, at Coachella’s country-music counterpart, Stagecoach.

Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses performs onstage.

Late Friday, Guns N’ Roses was back in Indio for the first night of Power Trip, a three-day heavy-metal(-ish) blowout that also features Metallica, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Tool, and to mark the occasion, Rose, 61, relayed the heartwarming fact that the incident described in GNR’s song “Double Talkin’ Jive” really happened.

“True story,” he told the crowd after guitarist Slash took a long, snarling solo. “Found a head and an arm in a trash can behind the studio.”

Guns N' Roses performs on stage with vibrant lights.

Guns N’ Roses’ Coachella comeback was notoriously hamstrung by Rose’s injury; he broke his foot just days before the fest during a warm-up gig at the Troubadour, forcing the most kinetic of rock singers to perform while seated in a throne he borrowed from Foo Fighters ’ Dave Grohl (who’d used it himself after breaking his leg).

Seven years and dozens of stadium concerts later, the band — with OG bassist Duff McKagan along with keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese, guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Frank Ferrer — has become a well-oiled machine. Its three-hour Power Trip set moved efficiently through nearly 30 songs, including such genre-defining hits as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” “You Could Be Mine,” “Patience,” “Paradise City” and the crowning achievement of hard rock’s greatest ballad singer, “ November Rain .”

Metallica, a stadium warhorse, freshens its onslaught at SoFi

At the second of two sold-out shows, heavy metal stalwarts Metallica challenged themselves and their audience, with thunderous results.

Aug. 28, 2023

For that one, Rose, who spent most of the evening crisscrossing Power Trip’s enormous stage in a succession of black T-shirts, slipped on a sparkly silver jacket and sat down behind a grand piano on a bench designed to resemble a motorcycle.

But if the polish and athleticism of GNR’s performance here was impressive — for what it’s worth, Rose looked quite a bit trimmer than he did even 18 months ago at Stagecoach — the show also felt a bit standard-issue: just another gig for a hard-working rock band rather than the one-off spectacle its setting might’ve led some to hope for. The same largely went for Iron Maiden, which preceded Guns N’ Roses on Friday with a very solid version of its current arena production. (Goldenvoice, the promoter that puts on these Indio festivals, refused to disclose the size of the crowds at Power Trip, though the number is well into the tens of thousands.)

A shirtless fan with his tongue out looks at the camera at Power Trip.

Any sense of disappointment wasn’t merely tied to the specific expectations raised by Power Trip, which serves as a sequel of sorts to Desert Trip, the 2016 boomer-palooza that brought together the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney , Bob Dylan and other legends of 1960s rock. The challenge GNR faces as a newly stable legacy act is how to tap into the mayhem and the bad attitudes that once defined the band — and made it such a thrill — without letting them derail the whole thing as often happened in the old days.

Thus Rose’s recollection of the grisly events of “Double Talkin’ Jive.”

Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden performs on stage in glasses that resemble goggles.

The tradeoff for all this professionalization was the not-unwelcome opportunity to remember how peculiar GNR’s music is: the knotty structure of a psychotic blues like “Coma,” the overwhelming forward drive of “You Could Be Mine,” the disarming tenderness of “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” with its image of a lover’s reassuring hair. “Paradise City” and “Welcome to the Jungle” made a case for Slash as the most melodically gifted soloist in hard rock, while “Mr. Brownstone” made you wonder who Rose thought he was fooling when he wrote a lyric about waking up around 7 a.m.

Along with the hits, the band played a couple of unremarkable new tunes as well as some from “Chinese Democracy,” the better-than-you-recall 2008 LP that Rose spent more than a decade working on before he invited Slash and McKagan back into the fold. As he sang the title track — Rose’s vocals were strong Friday, if less flexible than they used to be — the singer’s blue-green eyes glinted with a little of his signature indignation, as though what could still get him riled up was the prospect of being underrated.

Axl Rose and Slash of Guns N' Roses perform onstage.

GNR also peppered the show with covers: not just its hit renditions of Wings’ “Live and Let Die,” which Rose dedicated to McCartney as the song turned 50, and Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” which got a funky white-reggae breakdown, but punk oldies by U.K. Subs and the Stooges and a deeply earnest take on Jimmy Webb’s “Wichita Lineman.”

That late-’60s easy-listening classic might not have seemed to share much with the rest of Guns N’ Roses’ presentation on Friday. Then again, it’s about a guy just doing his job.

Power Trip 2023: The good, the bad, the sweat on Day 2 of Goldenvoice's metal festival

Power Trip continues to provide, whether you're talking about sweat or epic live performances.

Day 2 of the three-day heavy metal festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio was another scorcher, but we pushed through in the name of rock (and I salute you all, my comrades). Judas Preist kicked things off with a straight metal showcase any fan would go wild for, and AC/DC was ... well ... simply legendary. Seriously, if I didn't know coming in that these guys hadn't played lived together in seven years, I would have assumed they'd just played SoFi Stadium this summer.

Here were our three favorite parts of the day, as well as our three least favorite.

Let's get these over with.

The amount of sweat dripping down my back.  Yes, I know I wrote about the heat yesterday and yes, I know I should get over it because I'm a desert local but it's just a lot for October, OK? Especially for a festival with an unofficial all-black dress code! Hello, I needed to blend in. Anywho, the amount of sweat my body produced today was disgusting, but it was worth it.

The cigarette smoke. Sure, I sound like some lame health freak, but sometimes it's distracting when you're watching an awesome performance and you get such a big whiff of secondhand smoke that you can feel it fill your lungs for a few moments. I had to take a break during AC/DC and head to the press tent just to feel better.

The lack of places to sit and eat. This is going to make me sound old (LOL I am almost 30, after all), but it's surprising how few benches, tables, etc. I've been able to find by all the food stands. I know Coachella and Stagecoach aren't necessarily great for this either, but at those festivals you at least have the chance to snag a spot at the Indio Central Market. Here, I see most people eating and drinking while standing or sitting in the grass because there are so few other options.

Now, onto the good stuff.

Judas Priest (just in general). OK, so I came into this festival not knowing much about Judas Priest, I'll admit. I learned a lot about Rob Halford's legacy from our writer Brian Blueskye's reporting on Halford's history as a leather icon, but otherwise I just thought of these guys as some other Englishmen filling in for Ozzy Osbourne. However, I was pleasently surprised by how much I enjoyed their set. The heavy metal vocals aren't necessarily my jam and they never have been, but these guys are master musicians and I was especially impressed by the guitarists.

The crowd. Honestly, people have been pretty chill and overall very friendly at this festival. Other than a few moments of being angry at security for not letting us through the gates on time or just being pissed at the weather, everyone I've witnessed and/or spoken with has just been in a good mood, and it's probably because they came for the music and not just some Instagram pics. My coworker and I joked that I must look like I'm working constantly because several people have come up to me asking me questions about the festival, even mid-dinner bite, but I've enjoyed speaking with them and have met some really cool, kind folks who were a pleasure to be around.

Getting to hear all my favorite AC/DC songs live . No, I'm not a diehard AC/DC fan, but I grew up in a household that appreciated rock music and played it often, and just being someone who was constantly watching movies and TV so I heard those songs all the time, I developed a genuine love and appreciation for a lot of AC/DC's music (hello, "School of Rock," anyone?). I got chills when the first few notes of "Back in Black" started playing, and had to turn around and look at all the people around me to soak in the once-in-a-lifetime (or at least once-in-seven-years) moment we were all sharing.

AC/DC Make Victorious Return With First Live Show in Seven Years

By Charisma Madarang

Charisma Madarang

AC/DC took to the stage for the first time in seven years on Saturday night of the Power Trip festival .

It was the first time lead vocalist Brian Johnson performed live with the group since September 2016 in Philadelphia, following a 79-date Rock or Bust world tour. The ill-fated trek  required the services  of Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose for the final 22 stops after Johnson bowed out with  hearing loss issues .

Saturday’s lineup also saw Matt Laug step in for drummer Phil Rudd, while longtime bassist Cliff Williams came out of retirement with Angus and Stevie Young on guitar.

AC/DC played a 24-song set and opened for the first time with “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It),” according to Spin . The performance also packed hits “Back in Black,” “Thunderstruck,” “Have a Drink on Me,” “Highway to Hell,” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Last year, Johnson told  Rolling Stone   he didn’t know if AC/DC would perform again. “I would love to,” he said. “It’s as simple as that. I think everybody would. There’s a groundswell of people just asking. But I hate talking about the future, because, fuck, we were ready two years ago, and the pandemic came, and it screwed everything up. So I’m terrified to say what could happen and what couldn’t.”

Power Trip also saw Judas Priest reunite with guitarist Glenn Tipton, who retired in 2018 due to Parkinson’s disease. The band filled in for former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, who was scheduled to headline at the festival, but withdrew due to ongoing health issues .

Metallica & Tool Wrap Up Power Trip With Heavy Memorable Throwdowns (FESTIVAL RECAP)

  • By Ryan Dillon

The weekend of 2023’s Power Trip has finally come to a close and left a trail of heavy guitar riffs and legendary performances. The three-day festival hosted in Indio, California saw iconic bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest take the stage as each night brought in two bands from the history books of hard rock. Sunday (October 8) was the last night of Power Trip with Tool and Metallica taking on the headlining duties for day/night three.

Tool pieced together a honed setlist that took fans through their colorful discography. The band kicked things off with two selections from their 10,000 Days LP by pulling out tracks like “Jambi” and “The Pot”, they would revisit the album later on in the set with a performance of “Rosetta Stoned”. They focused on their classic 1996 release Ænima with performances of “Stinkfist” and “Pushit” from the LP. Their twelve-song setlist had the band touching on different eras from their career, playing songs like “The Grudge” from Lateralus and “Swamp Song” from their unforgettable 1993 debut Undertow .

Metallica has been on their M72 world tour for some months now and their setlist shows a veteran band getting back in the grooves of touring. Their setlist had something for every kind of Metallica band as the band delivered an unforgettable performance. They kicked things off with “Whiplash” before launching into tracks like “Creeping Death” and “For Whom The Bell Tolls”. The band spread the love to the different eras of their career, performing at least one song from albums like Reload and …And Justice For All with a particular focus on their iconic self-titled LP and their latest release 72 Seasons .

Power Trip 2023 has come to a close and the electricity of the shows can still be felt in the air. Check out Metallica and Tool’s setlist along with footage of their performances below:

Tool at Power Trip: a mind-melting, triumphant showcase unlike anything else on stage this weekend

Tool capitalise on their unique status on the power trip festival bill in stunning style.

Tool live on stage in 2017

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

The youngest band on the Power Trip bill by almost a decade, prog metal masters Tool are outliers in more ways than one. Using the massive screens as a kaleidoscopic backdrop, they never get the jumbo-tron treatment and while guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Justin Chancellor and drummer Danny Carey each get a spotlight, singer Maynard James Keenan lurks in the shadows behind the band, sporting a spiked mohican and all-but invisible to everyone but the closest.

So, in short: Tool are business as usual. Anti-rockstars and alien in the truest sense, their set is perfectly pitched for the splendour of the California desert, the pink-and-purple hues of sunset just feeling like the light show has started early. Opener Jambi rumbles like a volcano about to erupt, juddering riffs giving way to howling solos and interstellar breakouts.

And there are plenty of those throughout the set, meditative riffs teased out in tantric fashion for Pneuma, Forty Six & Two and Pushit , expansive instrumentals holding a surprisingly captivating atmosphere given the rock'n'roll and heavy metal hammering the audience has been subject to across the rest of the weekend.

That's not to say Tool don't have anthems of their own, however. The Pot pops up just two songs into the set, The Grudge and Stinkfist popping up elsewhere to provide a heady mix of riffs and ethereal vocal melodies. Rosetta Stoned is a very welcome addition, a (relative) live rarity that becomes especially otherworldly with a Pink Floyd -esque laser display their betrays some of their more prog-tastic leanings.

In a weekend that has seen top of the line displays of theatricality ( Iron Maiden ), rock grandeur ( Guns N' Roses ), heavy metal bombast ( Judas Priest ) and sheer, joyous rock'n'roll ( AC/DC ), Tool side-step almost all the conventions of the usual gigantic rock spectacle, and yet still deliver an out of this world experience worthy of any arena, legends in their own right and more than capable of standing toe-to-toe with some of the world's biggest acts.

With a final thunderous rendition of Ænema, Tool set up the closing day of Power Trip with a mind-melting, triumphant showcase of just how singular their art is, a transcendental experience that surpasses genre boundaries.

Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden Kick Off Power Trip Festival: Video + Photos

The following nights of the three-day fest will feature AC/DC, Judas Priest, Metallica, and Tool

Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden Kick Off Power Trip Festival: Video + Photos

The historic Power Trip festival kicked off on Friday night (October 6th) in Indio, California. The three-day event features six of the biggest hard rock and heavy metal acts in the world, with two bands performing each night.

Tens of thousands of fans descended upon the Empire Polo Club, the same site where Coachella is held every year. They were greeted by a giant devil-horn-shaped cactus, letting them know that they were in for a weekend of legendary rock music.

Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden had the honor of playing the first night, with Maiden taking the stage first at 6:55 p.m., about 10 minutes later than the advertised 6:45 set time.

Instead of playing a “greatest hits” set, as could have been expected at an event such as Power Trip, Maiden stuck with their current “Future Past World Tour” setlist, which features the band playing songs predominantly from their latest album, 2021’s Senjutsu , and their 1986 LP Somewhere in Time .

At one point, singer Bruce Dickinson told the crowd about Senjutsu , “If you haven’t heard it, tough shit.” While that may not gone over well with some fans, the frontman did get a rousing response when he yelled, “Scream for me, Indio,” during “The Prisoner.”

Both “Senjutsu Eddie” and “Somwhere in Time Eddie” made appearances during the set. Outside the two aforementioned albums, Maiden played such classics as “Iron Maiden, “Fear of the Dark,” and “The Trooper.”

Guns N’ Roses were slated to go on at 9:25 p.m., but instead took the stage at 10 p.m. That didn’t stop Axl Rose and company from tearing through a 29-song set that ended at roughly 1 a.m. The band kicked things off with “It’s So Easy,” one of eight songs they played from Appetite for Destruction , including “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and the set-closing “Paradise City.”

Rose dedicated the band’s cover of “Live and Let Die” to Sir Paul McCartney, who released the song 50 years ago with Wings. And GN’R’s performance of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” meant that the band played songs by two acts who were part of the classic-rock-themed Desert Trip festival seven years ago at the same location.

Fireworks went off during Guns N’ Roses’ final bow, but Power Trip is far from over. On Saturday night, AC/DC (playing their first show in seven years) and Judas Priest (filling in for the originally scheduled Ozzy Osbourne) will take the stage, followed on Sunday by Metallica and Tool.

See photos of Iron Maiden below by Consequence photographer Alex Kluft. As of this time, no pictures of Guns N’ Roses have been made available by the festival. Fan-filmed video footage of both bands can also be seen below, as can each of their setlists.

Iron Maiden Starts Power Trip on High Note: Set List and Photos

Iron Maiden 's Bruce Dickinson asked the Power Trip audience an easy question during the band's weekend-opening set.

"Oh, I know: How many Maiden fans are here?" he asked, his inquiry met with a volcanic roar. That much was obvious from the endless variations of Iron Maiden shirts, flags and other paraphernalia throughout the crowd, and a merchandise line that dwarfed the second Friday night performer, Guns N' Roses .

You can see the set list and exclusive photos from Iron Maiden's performance below.

A Tough Set for a Festival

Power Trip doubled as the final date (for now) of Iron Maiden's Future Past tour . They stuck to the same set list , which heavily features 1986's Somewhere in Time and 2021's Senjutsu . It was a characteristically bold and, frankly, challenging move for a festival setting, especially for the general admission audience to whom the band looked like gnats.

So, Maiden made an implicit bargain with the audience: If they indulged the band a handful of Senjutsu ’s long-form epics in the first half of the performance, Maiden would reward them with a slew of '80s classics and deep cuts. The band caught fire during "Can I Play With Madness" and led the crowd in a thundering singalong during "Heaven Can Wait," which also featured a futuristic firefight between Dickinson and their towering mascot Eddie.

READ MORE: 5 Reasons Iron Maiden Should Be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Dickinson was in great spirits, ribbing the obscenely far-away crowd ("Say something back! Take about five minutes for it to get here!") and waxing philosophical about the unifying power of heavy metal, gesturing to the diverse audience as proof.

"Human beings have a streak of being the biggest fucking assholes on the planet," the frontman said. Yet in the face of unceasing war and genocide, Dickinson remained optimistic. "What you can never wipe out is a culture, a language, a family, a tradition. You can talk to the Ukrainians about that."

This Is One of Iron Maiden's Most Challenging Set Lists

Iron Maiden's unwavering commitment to delivering 100% every night has cultivated one of the most loyal fan bases in metal. The band once again performed with breathless intensity and enthusiasm, running across the stage with age-defying agility. Dickinson and bassist Steve Harris jostled for the front of the stage as guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers traded wizardly solos.

This is one of Iron Maiden's most physically demanding sets in recent years, and the band occasionally fluffed tempos and got slightly out of sync with each other. For any other band it might be negligible, but Maiden's nearly spotless track record makes it noteworthy. Nearly 50 years into their career, they're finally starting to slow down ever so slightly — not yet cause for alarm, but a potent reminder that time eventually catches up with even the best and seemingly ageless bands.

But for now, Maiden will keep running, and according to Dickinson's parting words, they'll see us again.

I’ll be honest with you, thrash is the reason I picked up the guitar, stood before a mic, and threw angry saliva at the lone spectator at the foot of the stage. Thrash is why I’m a metalhead and thrash is why I’m here before you. Sure, my tastes have evolved quite a bit since those pimple-faced days, but a monster like Power Trip brings the memories flooding back. Yes, Power Trip reminds me of the good ole days, which means it’s a re-/neo-/retro-thrash outfit that does it the way it’s always been. But, man, they do it well. And, with Nightmare Logic , they’ve done it better than they’ve ever done it before.

For one, Riley Gale’s vocals are a harsher rendition of the Bloodclot ( Cro-Mags )/Killian ( Vio-lence ) approach he took on their debut album, Manifest Decimation . It’s a perfect fit to the barrage of chugging, fast-picked guitars that fill this thirty-minute record from beginning to end. And the beginning is where, well… we begin. “Soul Sacrifice” is a neck-snapping number that starts from nothing, huffing and puffing harder than the world’s largest diesel engine. It even sports a build that climaxes into “Raining Blood” proportions. But Nightmare Logic doesn’t stop here. The conclusion to “Soul Sacrifice” is only the beginning of “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe).” If you’ve heard the debut album from these Texas boys, I know you’ll remember “Crossbreaker.” “Executioner’s Tax” is that song’s illegitimate step-child. Do you want a song that charges the tallest castle walls on the planet (no matter the futility) and comes at you like a possessed, axe-wielding ape? Well, this is it. “Swing of the axe!” will be stuck in your head for a week.

power trip review

For memorability, the title track, “Ruination,” and “Crucifixation” are on par with the previous two. Comparing extremes, the three-minute, testicle-stomping “Ruination” does its damnedest to match wits with the five-minute closer, “Crucifixation.” What the former lacks in time, it makes up for in catchiness—almost to the level of “Executioner’s Tax.” The closer is the lengthiest on the album, but the time it has for riff changes gives it a memorability “Ruination” can never have. In comparison to these tracks, “Nightmare Logic” and “If Not Us Then Who” fall a touch short, but what makes them work are the vocals. The riffs are still there, but Gale’s venom and his verse arrangements give them the kind of fuel to propel space shuttles.

As you can probably guess, I love this damn album. Yes, “love.” Nope, I didn’t give it a 4.0/5.0, but I still love it. Fucking deal with it. I have to admit I’m a little biased by the fun Power Trip and I had back at the Southwest Terror Fest , but this album is nothing more than in-your-face rethrash. It has an energy few retro-thrash bands are capable of capturing and I put it up there with the Havok s and Warbringer s of the world. In the end, this is an enjoyable listen that smashes the band’s previous release into oblivion. It’ll also smash your eardrums into your skull. If you’re one of those people that hates thrash, I’m sure you can find some metalcore to appease your sad hearts. For all the thrashers of the world, you oughta have fun with this one.

Ben 10: Power Trip Review

power trip review

Ben 10 has been around for yonks, and not just on the small screen. The first Ben 10 game – Protector of Earth – was on the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS, thirteen years ago. Congratulations, Ben Tennyson – for a kid you are OLD. There’s clearly still an audience for the little shapeshifter, though, as the latest volume of the TV series was out this year, taking it up to its fifteenth.

The latest Ben 10 game is that old TV trope – the European road trip (and thus the ‘Trip’ in the game’s title). You, Gwen and Grandpa Max are out in the camper van, taking in the sights of – what seems to be – the Alps regions of Germany. This is very much a Cartoon Network, Americanised take on the area, as the first park ranger you encounter has an Australian accent. Everyone else varies wildly from Lederhosen-wearing lumberjacks to people with full-blown American accents. A documentary this is not.

Ben 10: Power Trip

In a bold move, the holidaying is interrupted by your arch-nemesis Hex, who wastes no time in stripping you of your powers. For a series whose USP is a boy that can turn into flamethrowing giants and whatnot, it’s quite the call to take them away from him. It works, though, as you unlock your Omnitrix transformations one at a time, giving you room to get to grips with each one before moving on to the next. Ben himself is no slouch, either, as he has a cool scooter that makes travelling through the open world a cinch.

Wait – did we just say open world? Let’s jump to the important detail that plays into so much that is good and bad about Power Trip: this is an open-world game. That doesn’t simply mean the levels are broad, or that you’re given missions to do in any order – this is an open world in the purest sense, as you might have encountered in many a Far Cry or Assassin’s Creed . It’s a massive call for a game that’s clearly got a fraction of the budget of your Ubisoft open worlds.

If you’ve played your share of games aimed at kids, it’ll be a welcome difference. There’s freedom to take the game at your own pace, completing side quests, collectathons or just climbing onto rooftops like a pocket Crackdown . Even the main quests are split between four regions, and three of those are pretty much available from the get go. Do them in any order, and unlock their two associated alien transformations before moving on to the others. For scattered attention spans, it can be a lifesaver.

Ben 10: Power Trip Review

Like your LEGO open worlds, it allows for some emergent play with your kids, and the co-op mode is welcome. You can both play the entirety of the game, from side-questing to main, but with a caveat: you can’t stray far from each other or you will risk getting yanked back via teleport. In this household, it was a dealbreaker and completely undermined the open world. Why create a huge map if you can’t split up and explore it away from each other? Your take might differ, and you might be able to make it work, but we felt the absence of a more friendly co-op mode.

Parts of the game really flourish in the open world. The farthest region, a mountainous resort, lets the reasonably flat level design sprawl a bit, and you’ll be navigating winding, precarious areas that invite exploration. It’s the game at its peak, in more ways than one, and the simple traversal controls can make it feel like the Prince of Persia reboots, if you squint a bit.

Here comes the ‘BUT’. Ben 10: Power Trip is the answer to the question of ‘what happens to an open world if you spread the content a little too thin?’. While the size of the map is significant, the areas are empty and repetitive. The worst culprit is Strudelbek, one of the three regions available from the off, and the main city of the game. With the exception of a few landmark buildings, the city is a tiled photocopy of a ghost town. Buildings are duplicated and bland; there’s nobody wandering round the streets; virtually no cars travel the roads, and railways sit empty. It feels like 28 Days Later – you almost expect some zombies to shamble around the corner.

Ben 10: Power Trip Xbox

There’s not enough gameplay to fill the world either. The regions are big enough to host their own Ben 10 games, but they instead house three ‘save my cat’-style side quests and eight-or-so main quests that’ll take you no more than ten minutes each. These include missions to reclaim your Omnitrix powers that don’t bother to use the environment anyway. You could hunt for collectibles, but then you’d be butting against the dreariness of the world and it’s repetition. Some kids might feel that urge, but there was none here.

That’s not to say that the main missions are poor. Some are surprisingly epic, charging through the streets of the city after Hex and blasting holes in the environment (not persistently, unfortunately). As if exhausted from making these impressive missions, the devs intermingle them with missions that require the delivery of letters or a chat to another NPC. The missions are a mixed bag then, but they collectively don’t last particularly long.

At least it feels pretty good to play these missions. The six transformations you acquire are satisfyingly different: some are bulky and slow but powerful, while others are nimble and can cross a city in minutes. They feel different in combat too, with Shockrock able to lasso flying critters (they are a pain without this ability), while Diamondhead can reflect missiles back at their owner. Working through the open world will need their unique skillsets too. Switching between them can be something of a faff, as you’ll only be able to have quick access to three of them, but generally the unlocking and use of your transformations is a joy.

Ben 10: Power Trip Xbox Review

The platforming is decent, but prone to the curse of most 3D platformers – the camera. It has a habit of disappearing into your character’s body, or getting stuck under the lip of the platform you want to reach. Most of the time, the levels are open enough that this doesn’t amount to a problem, but it can crop up when you least want it to, when the action is most crowded (and when the bosses are at their largest).

That’s not to say that Ben 10: Power Trip is difficult: it seems well-pitched for 6-12 year-olds, and is generous with its fail-states. There’s probably seven or eight hours of gameplay here, if you don’t go collectible-hunting, and it’s smooth sailing almost all of the way.

Recommending Ben 10: Power Trip on the Xbox One is difficult, because everything comes with an asterisk. It’s a refreshing difference from your traditional licenced kids’ game, as it attempts an open world BUT that open world is lacking in content and interest. It can be explored cooperatively BUT only if you stay joined at the hip. The platforming and combat are fun BUT you’ll have to fight the camera while you do it. If you’re desperate for a Ben 10 experience on Xbox One then it might be enough to scrub out those asterisks and give it a go. For anyone else, several platformers have come out this year alone, and they all do what Power Trip does, with slightly more aplomb.

I completely agree you barely get to explore you do the same mission the we’re so lazy they couldn’t even add any texture To buildings or people movements in anyone’s hair or fur and they completely copied and pasted bens aliens attacks onto Kevin 11 attacks they literally have the same movement there was this one time I needed shock rock for a generator bow but I used Kevin 11 version of wildvine and wildvine charged the bow with energy it didn’t even make sense this is my last con about the game if you watch the reboot even just a few episodes then I think you remember Kevin riding a skateboard at least put that tiny detail of making Kevin’s vehicle a skate board but the game plays good and so is bens and his aliens models but I suggest you just play the classic Ben ten games like protecter of earth it’s so much better

Power Trip for the win!!!!

My partner and I had been considering solar for a while. I did a lot of research into several different companies and decided to go with Power Trip for several reasons. For starters, they actually came out and looked at the property, rather than just using a computer generated model. Further, they answered all my questions promptly and were honest and fair in their quotes. The system has been stellar since we had it installed in August 2022. Now that we're considering an extension to our array, we'll definitely be going with Power Trip again.

Excellent Experience

Customer service was fantastic. Very responsive to our needs and schedule. Installers have great chemistry and I can't speak highly enough about their work. You'd be making the wrong move to go with anyone else. Best on the OP!

12.4kW array working perfectly

Power Trip finished the expansion of my legacy 4.2 kW array to 12.4 kW. They handled the complexity of integrating the old with the new perfectly. They completed the job on time, as quoted, in a professional manner.

Power Trip added 8.2 kW to my existing 4.2 kW array

Great to work with. They delivered exactly as quoted and on time. They did a tidy job.

Great company! Great results!

We attended a solar power seminar sponsored by Power Trip Energy Corp and believed we could save money on energy costs in the long term, support green energy, reduce the use of non-renewable energy sources. Power Trip provided a bid and recommendations to us; listened to our questions and concerns, then revised their proposal to our satisfaction. <br /><br />Their installers were professional, courteous, timely, and knowledgeable. We couldn't be happier with the result and love the bills from our local electrical provider throughout the summer (just the basic charge plus tax). We realize we will tilt from producing more energy than we use as the days shorten and the sun sinks into winter. <br /><br />As a result of our experience one neighbor has already installed a solar array on his home and two more have asked us about our experience. <br /><br />The incentives at the state and federal level were certainly a factor in our decision; however, by projecting our energy costs across the next 20 years and comparing to the up-front solar investment it was an easy decision. Better for our long run pocket book and better yet helping the environment - not to mention with the incentives we will "pay off the system" sooner than expected.

Mark @ ATGTurnings | Bremerton, Washington | 06/03/2018

Sensible and Effective

An easy decision for us to install solar at our place. Southerly facing roof of a tall outbuilding just cried for solar panels to be installed. Power Trip Energy sold the system to us, and did the installation near the end of September 2017. Did a wonderful job but more importantly their staff was very helpful along the way in keeping us apprised of the various paperwork processes. The installation crew was very efficient, personable, and willing to answer questions about the details of their work. The installation was done in two days, no leaks in the roof over the winter, and everything on the outside is ship-shape in appearance.

Hayesolar | Indianola, Washington | 05/12/2018

Power Trip Energy installed our 8k solar system in December of 2017. Their people were great from beginning to end and their work was excellent. As a former building contractor, I've had a lot of experience with the trades and these folks are GOOD!

WildKat | Port Townsend, Washington | 05/10/2018

Let the Sun Shine!

From start to ongoing communication, the Power Trip team has been outstanding in terms of educating the public about solar systems (our first encounter was one of their workshops), installation, billing, helping with tax returns and other cost recovery incentives, and maintenance of the system. The app for daily power consumption/production that comes with the system has helped us understand how the system is working and also how we can continue to streamline our power needs at home. Plus it is fun to see the bright green circle that tell us we are banking energy!

olyaqua | Port Townsend, Washington | 10/09/2017

Power Trip installed our system in July 2017. We were very happy with the pre- installation meetings and also the follow-through during installation and afterwards. We are very happy that we made the leap to solar and highly recommend this company to anyone considering doing this.

Taf | Port Ludlow, Washington | 05/23/2017

Power Trip(PT) was instrumental in building our new “green” house. Several years ago PT was asked to survey our possible building site for potential solar energy capture. Their survey reported that the site had positive solar potential. That survey began our strong relationship with PT.<br /><br />PT was with us from the beginning of our new home. PT determined the compass orientation of the house foundation that would place the roof line for the greatest capture of solar energy. PT also designed the angle (slope) and size of the roof for placement of solar panels. PT also helped in our selection of the metal roof style that enhanced panel placement without having to penetrate the roof for panel anchorage.<br /><br />Our “green” home is installed with a ductless heat pump for household heat, a ‘heat-pump' hot water heater, and all lighting is LED. The house is insulated beyond county code requirements.<br /><br />PT installed our solar panels on January 5, 2017. In addition to the panels, an EV (electric vehicle) charger station was installed. On April 28th , an all electric Chevrolet Bolt was purchased. <br /><br />Today after 129 days since the installation of the solar panels, data collected shows that the ave daily energy use for the house is 32.87 kWh. So far, the ave daily Solar energy production is 32.07 kWh with a result of 97.57% of the daily household electrical use being supplied from Power Trip installed solar panels (32.07kWh/32.87kWh). The total household use of electricity includes the kWh used to charge the Bolt. The Bolt has been driven over 2000 miles since its purchase and it has been charged at our new home only.<br /><br /> Also, our PUD electric bills for March and April were only for the monthly $14.50 base fee that is charged to each electric bill. No charges were made for electricity since no electricity was delivered. In addition, the May PUD electric bill states that 396 kWh have been added to our banked usage balance. <br /><br />We look forward to the days ahead when the ‘2017 spring rain season' is replaced with some long days of sunshine and ‘banking' energy for later winter days. Also with new batteries being developed, our future may include an ‘on site' energy storage system.<br /><br />Can we recommend Power Trip Energy for solar planning and installation? YOU BET!

“We loved our decision to purchase a solar power system from Power Trip Energy. We are supporting the world’s climate health and the local business community, both important to us. Also it was a sound financial move with immediate and long term returns. The staff at Power Trip made the experience fun, easy and rewarding. Deborah and Jim Parker – former GM at Jefferson County PUD

Everyone at Power Trip was great to work with and very responsive.  We were building a new garage with a membrane roof.  All of the guys worked closely with our contractor to ensure that the supports were coordinated, roof penetrations were minimized, and everything was properly sealed.  (Other firms we talked with wanted to wait until the roof was completed and then penetrate the new roof with their installation.) When we decide to increase our capacity, we will definitely be going with Power Trip again!!! Steve & Teresa Erickson

“We are approaching our ten year anniversary of solar installation in October.  We just passed 50,000 KW produced last week.  Everything is working as expected and we are certainly thrilled with our continued solar electric production”. -Larry and Gayle Kilmer in Sunny Sequim, Washington

A great sunny July 1st with this message from some happy clients….

ESTIMATED annual production: 8240 kwh – ACTUAL annual production: Year ending 6/30/2017: 9439 kwh – Year ending 6/30/2018: 9814 – kwh Year ending 6/30/2019: 9607 kwh – Our system is 30 SunPower SPR-E20-327, 327 watt PV, rated at 9.81 kw total.

For the past three years we have been very close to net zero for annual electricity consumption, meaning our annual cost of electricity is close to zero. We only pay the monthly minimum.

WE ARE DELIGHTED WITH OUR SOLAR SYSTEM! Brooks – July 2019

Roger Day recommends Power Trip Energy Corp. We have joined the choir in singing how great Power Trip is to do business with. From our initial inquiry September 2018 to the final inspections and system turnover in November the office staff and field technicians promptly answered all our questions in a timely manner. All appointments were on time and the installation went perfectly. It became very evident during the process that the staff at Power Trip enjoys and believes in what they are doing while helping to make a better planet for all of us. We strongly recommend Power Trip for your solar installation.

Robert Zeff recommends Power Trip Energy Corporation – Power Trip just completed the 8.2kW addition to my existing 4.2 kW system. They did a professional job, on-time, and exactly as quoted. I highly recommend them.

Mike Butkovic  recommends Power Trip Energy Corp.

Power Trip Energy installed our 7.7Kw system in Port Ludlow. They were a pleasure to engage with the entire way, the installers were careful, skilled, professional and hard working. The local electrical inspector said their installation “was great” upon inspection. They did a very fine job and I would recommend them to anyone considering solar installation. Impressive work by people passionate about solar!

Power Trip finished the expansion of my legacy 4.2 kW array to 12.4 kW. They handled the complexity of integrating the old with the new perfectly. They completed the job on time, as quoted, in a professional manner.

“I have 3 phases of solar PV totaling 11.5KW from Power Trip Energy. Installation went well and wiring was well hidden. After trees were taken down by neighbors and opened up new potential for phases two and three, they even rearranged panels so the highest efficiency ones were in the best position. All three phases are working to my satisfaction. They also installed two car charger outlets and one charger.” – Charlie Michele

Hi Andy, Just a brief note to share with you how thrilled I am to read about your success with solar installations throughout Jefferson County, including the amazing Finn River project.  As an early investor in small scale solar at my Leland property, I can attest to the ongoing joy of ‘going solar’. I am encouraged by how many continue to do so as we seek various ways of contributing to a better world. You and your company help make the world a better place.  Thank you for all that you do.  Happy Holidays to you and your family! Sincerely, Ted

“The crew was very professional and personable. They arrived on time at every stage of the process. The installation went great and I could not be happier with the finished product. Their office staff provided timely answers and assistance to all my questions in a timely manner.” Michael did a very thorough job of explaining the benefits, and return on investment analysis. That made it easy to make a decision. The install crew was professional and very positive. We had a sub-panel that had some issues, wasn’t really part of the install, but Power Trip provided a professional electrician to upgrade the sub-panel to code. After install service has been very good as well. Office personnel are very sharp. The net meter helps us track our solar production on a monthly basis. The system is performing to original specs.  – April 6, 2017

We had contemplated a solar system for some time. Friends were sold on their systems and this company. We attended one of their presentations and decided to get a quote. From the home evaluation, system design, installation and follow up everything was handled professionally. We had some cosmetic concerns regarding the conduit run and meter location and they met our concerns very nicely. The installation was done very professionally and on time. The system included a new, wireless monitor that required some modification to work with our power supply. This required additional visits and time and they kept at it until everything was correct. The entire process was on time and on budget. They coordinated the paper work with our local utility and the State. I would highly recommend this team for adding solar power to your home. – January 30, 2017

Power Trip Energy did a very professional job of installing our system. There was an issue with the production meter but it was resolved within a short time.  – January 25, 2017

The group from Power Trip Energy Corp were professional in all areas. They explained in great detail how solar panel work, assessed the benefits of panels at our home, gave us a very reasonable estimate, completed the work on time and on budget, and then showed us how to track our electrical usage and savings. I highly recommend this firm if you are interested in installing solar panels at your home.  – January 12, 2017

On time, at budget, and a smooth process conducted by courteous and thoughtful sales, installation, and management personnel. Friendly, consumer oriented, safety conscious company.  – January 12, 2017

Upon our request several years ago, Power Trip Energy Corp visited our home, educated us about our options, and provided us with a comprehensive, well-explained quote. When we were finally ready to go ahead with our project last year, throughout the entire process they were responsive and thorough. We liked the fact that they followed through on their timelines and commitments. They coordinated smoothly with our local Public Utility District and they patiently answered all of our questions. Every representative of the company impressed us with their positive, friendly customer service attitude. Early on, before signing a contract, we attempted to gather multiple quotes, but we were told by a competing company that “Power Trip is a great company and we can’t beat their service or their prices.” The only reason that we’re not giving them five stars is because our system is very new and we’ve only had a couple of (winter) months” experience with it. We have every reason to believe it will perform as promised. – March 17, 2016

We have found Power Trip Energy to be an excellent provider/installer of solar panels & related equipment. From their response to our initial contact and consultations about design through complete installation, they have been consistently polite, patient with our questions, and on-time in meeting their promised deadlines. Their busy schedule means that there is a time lag before work can be completed, but they were up front from the start about their schedule. We highly recommend them. – March 11, 2016

We can only repeat the comments of those who were completely satisfied with Power Trip energy. They kept us informed, completed our project as promised, and did it with a smile. – March 9, 2017

Best thing I ever did…thanks. – March 9, 2017

Everyone I worked with was great, and they had excellent follow-through on everything that needed to be done. I can’t fault them for the delay on the installation as they were extremely busy during that season. They graciously gave extra time with improving the aesthetics of the conduit placement, for which I am very grateful. The project was well sized for my needs and the solar panels have worked flawlessly, so that I have been able to keep my home electric usage at net-zero throughout the entire winter. – March 8, 2017

I attended two presentations given by Power Trip Energy, both very informative. I am extremely satisfied with my new solar array. Installation without any issues, onsite crew very polite, left the area clean. Jeff Randall made the entire process very easy. I am looking forward to many years of renewable energy. – June 13,2015

I attended a presentation on solar power last December given by Power Trip Energy. After digesting the information provided and asking for and contacting customers, we decided to have PTE install a 9.5 KW system. They did a very professional job. Their installers were courteous, met the schedule they proposed, and charged what they had promised (no hidden add-ons). In the first 6 weeks of operation (19 February to 1 April), the system generated 900 kwh of power. With the Washington State rebate, that equates to $225, in February/March in Bremerton (near Seattle)! We are very pleased! – May, 2, 2015

Workmanship was very professional. The crews were clean, prompt and very polite. – February 5, 2015

All of the people we had contact with at Power Trip Energy were excellent, from the initial solar feasibility analysis, to the installation and hook-up, to the back office paperwork and liaison with our local utility, they were all friendly, very capable and efficient and easy to work. They are a great company, and best of all they really believe in what they do. I would highly recommend them to anyone. – February 3, 2015

Our residential solar array installation was completed in December of 2014. It was exciting to see that on the wet cloudy days the system produced electricity! We are really looking forward to those long sunny summer days. The Power Trip Energy staff and crews were professional, knowledgeable and very helpful as we went through the learning process, setup and actual energy production from the ground mounted solar array. The quality of work was excellent and the support along the way has been very helpful. If you are considering solar power, I highly recommend contacting Power Trip Energy for your project. – December 30, 2014

John was very helpful every step of the way. We felt very well informed about choices and options. He was always ready to quickly respond to questions via phone and email. He tool care of all of the paperwork which was great. – November 30, 2014

Have been impressed with the whole process which we found helpful and effective. We liked their workmanship and everything went according to plan. We now have a 9.81 KW system and are very pleased. Only reason we didn’t give 5 stars is that we have yet to see if the estimated yearly output proves reasonably accurate. Also, both the State electrical inspector and local energy provider commented on the quality of the workmanship. – September 29, 2014

I was very pleased with Power Trip personnel from start to finish. The sales personnel were not pushy, yet very helpful in answering questions. The installation was done well and quickly, after some issues with the foundations for the poles were worked out, there were large tree roots in the way. They were also helpful with post-installation questions. We are considering expanding our system and would definitely go with Power Trip again, if we do. – September 25, 2014

We worked with Jeff Randall at Power Trip Energy for more than a year (he was incredibly knowledgeable and patient with us), to determine our overall system requirements. Our goal was to create an array that was large enough to supply all of our annual electricity. We revised & refined the design of our system multiple times, specifically located the array for maximum sun exposure, and selected domestically manufactured PV panels & inverters (which have a 10 year manufacturer”s warranty). We are VERY happy with this system, and enjoy watching our electric meter spin backwards! When combining the Local & Federal incentives, along with rebates & the value of the electricity that we generate, we estimate that our system will completely pay for itself in about 8 years. After that, it”s free electricity for life! Power Trip is a very professional organization, and we would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Go Solar with Power Trip…you will not be disappointed! – September 21, 2014

Power Trip provided us with excellent service. The technicians that came to our house were very professional, no loud music, and did not disrupt our lives at all during installation. Power Trip provided us with cost estimates, review solar panels, projected energy output, the permitting process prior to the installation and all numbers were accurate. Power Trip took care of the permits and all the necessary paperwork for our rebates. – September 9 2014

Power Trip provided excellent customer service from the start. Very prompt and helpful, thorough explanations. The installation was very smooth and quick, and they did a great job following up with operating instructions and all the paperwork. – August 14, 2014

We bought a Solar Evaluation by Power Trip Energy at a charity auction. We were impressed with the evaluation process and quickly decided to install solar panels. We appreciated the information shared about solar financing through Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union. Very positive experience in all regards and very pleased how easy it all was. – August 1, 2014

This company was thorough, accurate, knowledgeable, courteous, professional and was willing to listen to the customer’s input. I felt that John and I with our combined knowledge put the best system possible for our home. I am planning to put a second system on our home next year.  – July 21, 2014

From first contact through start up it has been a positive experience. Very knowledgeable and professional interaction.  – July 30, 2014

The install crew was not only on time but also were very safety conscious. I’m retired from the electrical.  – June 30, 2014

Apologies if this is a long story. After my mother in Michigan gifted my daughter her 2001 VW Beetle with 48,000 miles on it, my daughter and I traveled from California to pick up the car. We headed out on Thursday morning for the 5 day drive back home to Oakland California, taking a northern route to stop by Badlands National Park and Mt Rushmore. By Saturday evening, we arrived in Cheyenne WY, where we spent the night. After looking at the weather forecast for the Sierra mountains, we decided to pick up some chains for our tires at the local Walmart in Laramie, WY, before continuing on our trip. On Sunday morning, as we got close to Laramie on I-80, the engine started sputtering, misfiring and losing power. The EPC light kept flashing and it was clear something was wrong. I was able to make it to the local Walmart parking lot, though the car stalled a few times on the way there. After I parked, I was unable to generate any power beyond idling, and the car continued to stall. I consulted yelp and google to find a local mechanic, but none of the local shops were open on Sunday. I saw a listing for Rise High Auto Repair, which described itself as a mobile mechanic company. I called the number and spoke with the proprietor, Chris on the phone. He said he could be there in 35 minutes and would diagnose the problem for $125 ($95 diagnostic fee and $35 travel fee) in the Walmart parking lot and that the $95 diagnostic fee would count against the repair cost if we opted to have him repair the car. When Chris arrived in his mobile truck, he was incredibly friendly and he got straight to work. He recommended replacing the spark plugs and wires, thinking that would address the issue. After finishing the repair and clearing the codes, he suggested I drive around in the parking lot a few times to reset the computer to see if the repair addressed the issue. However it did not. I made it about 200 feet and the initial problem persisted. He said he thought it could be an issue with the throttle, which he said he could clean, but if it needed replacement, I'd need to spend a couple of days in Laramie, because it was unlikely any of the local part shops would have the necessary part in inventory. He took apart the throttle, cleaned it out, and reset the computer. We decided to take our chances and see if we could make it to Salt Lake City and then Elko NV, which was about 625 miles away. The car ran well all the way to Elko. We got to Elko around 10:30 pm, and I noticed I had a text from Chis checking in on us to see how the trip was going. On Monday morning, we continued our trip back to Oakland and arrived safely with no further issues. Again, I had a text from Chris on Monday, to see if we made it home ok. All told we drove over 1100 miles. I can't say enough about Chris. First, he was incredibly competent. I could tell from speaking with him that he is extremely knowledgeable about automobile repairs. Watching him work, I felt like I was watching a surgeon. He made all of the repairs in the Walmart parking lot and he worked efficiently and thoroughly to ensure that he was able to repair the car. It was cold and windy on this particular Sunday and he invested over 4 hours of his time fixing our car outside. Finally, he was incredibly honest and kind. He cared enough to check in on us until we got home, something he really didn't need to do. I unequivocally recommend using Chris and his company if you find yourself in Laramie WY.

I took the new Hyundai Kona on a family road trip: It's a practical car with pizzazz that I'd be comfortable letting my teenager drive.

  • A friend sought advice on a safe but not too-large car for his teenage sons.
  • I've also been thinking about what car would be suitable for my college-bound daughter.
  • I drove a Hyundai Kona from Silicon Valley to Santa Barbara to find out if this car fits the bill.

Insider Today

A close friend of mine recently called me for advice. He wanted to know what vehicle he should get for his teenage sons to drive.

The main criteria: It's got to be safe for these young drivers. But it also can't be too heavy and big, so if an accident happens, god forbid, they don't do too much damage to those around them.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, too. My youngest daughter is about to leave for college. She occasionally drives our ancient Toyota. What would I want her driving as an adult heading out into the world?

On a recent trip from Silicon Valley to visit UC Santa Barbara with my wife and daughter, I got to try out a vehicle that fits the bill: The 2024 Hyundai Kona .

Here are the highlights of the trip and a rundown of what we loved, liked, and disliked about this vehicle.

We had a lot to pack for the trip. Would everything fit?

power trip review

Yes, all our bags fit fine. The Kona's trunk is pretty roomy for a relatively small vehicle.

Legroom in the back was good, even when I pushed the driver seat back.

power trip review

The interior of the Hyundai Kona was bright and spacious

power trip review

The 2024 Kona stands out on the street. A slight spaceship vibe that I grew to like.

power trip review

We were most impressed by all the safety features

power trip review

The Hyundai Kona Limited AWD that I test drove came with a wide array of safety features that helped me keep an eye on my surroundings while driving. The best examples were the "No Blind Spot View Monitor" and a navigation system that has adaptive cruise control and "curve" control to help you steer around corners.

Some of the top safety features aren't available on the base model Kona

power trip review

Our test vehicle cost $34,695, including freight and handling. This is for the Limited AWD version, which comes with a huge number of impressive features, including ventilated seats, a Bose speaker system, and cool wheels. You can get a much more affordable SE model for about $25,000. This lacks some of the most impressive safety features, though, such as the "No Blind Spot View Monitor."

The Kona has a cool selector that you twist to put the automatic transmission into drive, reverse, and park.

power trip review

My daughter liked the Kona's styling, but said she wouldn't call it out to her friends. That's still a win.

power trip review

The Kona weighs 3000-3500 pounds, depending on the version. That's notably lighter than the average US vehicle.

power trip review

Safety ratings for the Hyundai Kona are solid

power trip review

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2024 Hyundai Kona a " Top Safety Pick+ " award.

On the road, the Kona handles well, with the occasional floaty feel in turns

power trip review

The Kona doesn't have the tightest steering. However, this is not supposed to be a sports car. The steering was accurate and the ride was certainly comfortable during our long drive to and from UC Santa Barbara.

The Bose speaker system sounded deep and crisp, and our phones hooked up to the bluetooth easily.

power trip review

Outlets for charging devices were plentiful and placed in the right spots throughout the vehicle.

On our long drive, these 2 safety features really helped

power trip review

The "No Blind Spot View Monitor" appeared as a circular video on the dashboard display whenever I indicated to turn or change lanes. It provided an instant video view of the area to the side and behind me. So useful to see what's going on back there. The curve control system helped me keep the car in the right spots on the highway during the long drive.

Our dog enjoyed the ride

power trip review

The base model Kona still has many safety features

power trip review

Standard safety features on the base SE model include: Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Warning; Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, and a Driver Attention Warning system. This is the type of technology that makes parents more comfortable when imagining their teenage kids driving around!

The engine on the Hyundai Kona Limited was peppy

power trip review

It has a 190-horsepower 1.6 liter turbocharged GDI 4-cylinder engine. I could press the accelerator on the highway and it would respond with more than enough power to maneuver easily and safely. However, some of the cheaper versions of the Kona come with a less-powerful engine.

Summing up my thoughts on the Hyundai Kona

power trip review

It's lighter than your average US vehicle. It's not too big, or too small. Many safety features come standard, and there are some really impressive ones that come with the high-end Limited model I drove.

I'd be comfortable having my teenage daughter driving the Kona.

power trip review

I'd recommend this vehicle for my friend's teenage sons, too.

It would also work well as a practical family vehicle that has a little pizzazz.

power trip review

A cheaper version of the Hyundai Kona may be a better deal

power trip review

The SE model of the 2024 Hyundai Kona may be a better deal, at roughly $25,000. The car I test drove was about $10,000 more than that. That's a lot of money. You'd miss out on the more-powerful engine, though. A few of the most impressive safety features aren't available with the SE version, either. And the wheels are less cool. But many of the things I loved about this vehicle are still there with the SE. You can also get pretty good lease deals on Kona vehicles, too.

Overall, I was impressed — and my family agreed after spending many hours on the road in California with the Kona.

Politics latest: Keir Starmer sets out what he'll do to tackle small boat crossings

Follow live updates as Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer sets out his party's plans to try and tackle small boat crossings if it wins power.

  • Darren McCaffrey: Will Labour's plan cut it with voters?
  • MP who defected to party from Conservatives introduces him
  • Starmer says it's 'great' to have Elphicke on board

  • Ed Conway: Today's figures are 'great numbers'
  • Faultlines:   Can British farming survive?
  • Independence 'can be delivered' in five years, Scotland's first minister tells Sky News
  • Live reporting by Tim Baker

While Labour leader Sir Keir was speaking, Sky News observed a number of people who tried to cross the Channel in small boats arriving in Dover.

At least 70 migrants were seen arriving in the UK aboard a Border Force boat.

Sky News understands they were picked up in the Channel and at least one child was among the group.

Sir Keir Starmer is emphatic when asked about the bringing people back from Rwanda if he becomes prime minister.

The Labour leader says he is going to scrap the Rwanda scheme - but also that he is "not interested in repatriating people, bringing people back".

Asked about whether he will forge a closer relationship with Europe, the Labour leader says that he does think the UK and the EU should have a security agreement, which allows for the exchange of data and intelligence.

Asked if he would welcome all disaffected Tory MPs into the party, Sir Keir quips that it would be a "long list".

He adds that he wants to "people who don't traditionally vote for the Labour Party" to support him.

Asked if he has a plan to deter people, Sir Keir says his primary goal is to stop the people-smuggling gangs.

He says that saying a deterrence like Rwanda works is not borne out by the evidence, saying that crossings have increased since the government passed the Safety of Rwanda Act.

Sir Keir is also pressed on whether he would return people to Syria or Afghanistan.

The Labour leader says many people come to the UK from countries like India and Bangladesh, and they are easy to return.

Afghanistan and Syria are different due to safety concerns - and he says this is why specific schemes are put in place.

Sir Keir says there does need to be some form of returns agreement made with the EU after the ending of the Dublin agreement.

But he says this will not involve joining the EU's current scheme.

Asked about the ECHR, a piece of legislation that several Conservatives want axed, Sir Keir says it's a "mistake" to point to the convention.

He says the issue is with the asylum system instead, as there are 100,000 people who arrived in the UK and not had their asylum claim processed, which is a bigger bottleneck.

Sir Keir brands this the "Travelodge amnesty" - and that it's not something the ECHR is a limiting factor on.

The BBC follows up on Sky's question - asking if no flights will take off if Sir Keir is in Number 10.

The Labour leader says his party "won't operate the policy" as he doesn't think it will work.

And he says he will get rid of the policy "straight away" when asked for a third time about flights by another journalist.

Responding to concerns about Natalie Elphicke joining the Labour Party - like those raised by Jess Phillips - Sir Keir says the event was "very important and significant".

By Darren McCaffrey, political correspondent

Given the impressive GDP figures released this morning, Labour needed a counter narrative to Conservative crowing.

And so it was to Dover and migration for Sir Kier Starmer to put some flesh on the bones of what a Labour government would do to tackle the small boats crisis.

More money, hundreds of more specialist investigators and the involvement of counter terrorism are all part of the plan, funded by savings from abandoning the Tories Rwanda scheme.

It's fascinating that Sir Keir now feels confident enough, not only talking about illegal migration (not traditional Labour territory) but taking the government head on, on an issue that he feels is up for grabs.

It demonstrates Sir Keir strength inside Labour but also the Conservatives perceived weakness on illegal migration.

The Rwanda scheme though, is in principle popular with lots of the public, so if Labour is to abandon it, with this frankly less eye catching alternative announced today - it leaves one big question - will their plan cut it with voters?

Sir Keir Starmer is asked if his party would welcome Nigel Farage, following the admitting of Tory MP Natalie Elphicke.

He says that Mr Farage is "the last person who'd want to join the Labour Party" and a "list of names doesn't help anyone".

The Labour leader praises Ms Elphicke for her defection - saying taking such an act requires a "huge amount of thought" and crossing the floor is "a very difficult thing" to do.

Sir Keir says he wants Labour to be a party where "reasonably minded people, whichever way they voted in the past" feel they can join.

"It is an invitation that we should be less tribal in the pursuit of a better country and invite people to our party who want to join in our object of national renewal," he says.

Sky's political editor Beth Rigby asks Sir Keir Starmer what his target is for small boat crossings by the end of 2026, if he becomes prime minister.

The Labour leader does not give a target number, but says he wants to reduce the figure "materially".

Sir Keir says he does not believe the gangs are "more sophisticated" than the terrorist gangs he worked to dismantle when he was a prosecutor.

Asked if he will scrap the Rwanda scheme on day one, Sir Keir says he will - and that it is a "gimmick, not a solution".

Moving onto asylum seekers, Sir Keir Starmer says he believes in a rules-based system.

He adds that a fast-acting system - which is also humane and detains and removes people who have no right to remain - is a key deterrent.

Sir Keir promises a new fast-track reforms and enforcement unit that will ensure claims can be processed quickly, with hundreds of new members of staff hired.

He criticises the Rwanda scheme as an "insult to anyone's intelligence".

Starmer goes on to criticise the "polarising voices" on both sides of the debate - both those who want complete free travel between nations, and those who do not want any asylum seekers whatsoever.

Rebuilding the asylum system will be a "test of political strength", according to the Labour leader.

He says it needs someone to resist the voices who don't want a functioning asylum system, who can prioritise the politics of political solutions and reject the "politics of performative symbols."

Sir Keir says the current approach is part of "the water in Westminster that rewards the grand gesture, the big talk, while disregarding the detail and practical action".

Sir Keir now begins outlining his party's plan to stop the boats.

He says Labour will target the gangs "upstream" - with a manifesto pledge to set up a "Border Security Command".

This will be based on a counter-terrorism approach, with "hundreds of specialist investigators" from the likes of the National Crime Agency, Border Force, Immigration Enforcement, Crown Prosecution Service and MI5.

This agency will be "freed from the cloying bureaucracy" of cross-government operations.

Sir Keir highlights how, when he was a prosecutor, there were people working across the world to co-ordinate legal work.

The Labour leader calls for a new partnership with Europol, and new intelligence sharing networks - criticising the government's Brexit deal for its impact on the above.

He adds that new powers - like those used against terrorists - are needed - like shutting off internet access, closing bank accounts and tracing movements using information from intelligence agencies are now needed.

Addressing people smugglers, Sir Keir says: "These shores will become hostile territory for you.

"We will find you. We will stop you. We will protect your victims.

"With the Border Security Command, we will secure Britain's borders."
