Miami Design District

Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye geodesic dome

The Miami Design District is a vibrant and sophisticated international destination for fashion, art, architecture and fine dining.

Spanning 18 square blocks north of the Wynwood neighborhood, this lively shopping and arts district is a treasure trove of high-end, luxury fashion shops, edgy galleries, Instagrammable public art and trendy restaurants. The brainchild of visionary developer and art collector Craig Robins, the Miami Design District has grown into a sophisticated and inviting international destination for art and design.

While window shopping at luxury flagship boutiques such as Prada, Celine and Balenciaga may be what initially draws many visitors to the Miami Design District, the experience is elevated by captivating public art everywhere you turn. From Buckminster Fuller’s palm-flanked Fly’s Eye Dome in Palm Court to Netscape, a web of hanging chairs by German designer Konstantin Grcic, the district is a feast for the senses.

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami hosts thought-provoking rotating exhibits, a public sculpture garden and a permanent collection that captures pivotal moments in the careers of major artists.

Don’t miss the Miami Museum Garage – quite possibly the world’s most beautiful parking garage – created by five artists (none of whom knew what the others were designing as they worked).

Other interesting things to do in the Miami Design District include visiting local galleries, such as David Castillo and Locust Projects . At the intimate Haitian Heritage Museum , learn about Haitian culture through art and history exhibits as well as community programming.

The Miami Design District offers excellent restaurants, too. James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Schwartz set the tone back in 2007 with his farm-to-table cuisine at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink and, ever since, the district has exploded with new concepts by celebrated chefs and restaurateurs. Dine under the stars on Peruvian-Japanese fare at Itamae in Palm Court, indulge in fire-grilled Korean steakhouse cuisine at MICHELIN-starred COTE Miami or join the see-and-be-seen crowd at Swan & Bar Bevy . Round out your evening with a nightcap/dessert combo with the adults-only, alcohol-infused ice creams of Aubi & Ramsa .

Miami Design District

The best things to do in the Design District

Miami’s centrally located haven for luxury shopping also boasts some of the city’s best dining, art and events.

Falyn Wood

This petite, tree-lined enclave is sort of like Wynwood’s older sister who went to a fancy art school up north and has amazing style. Pretty, manicured Design District might contain an unusually high concentration of coveted luxury shops, but it also has amazing cultural offerings—and many of them cost nothing to enjoy. Whether you’re looking to splurge or simply window shop and take in the sights, there’s a bit of something for everyone in this relatively new Miami neighborhood. From large-scale public art to free museums , Michelin-starred meals and funky boutiques, these are the best things to do in Design District right now.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Things to do in the Design District

1.  institute of contemporary art, miami.

  • Things to do
  • Cultural centers
  • Design District

Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami

The ICA (as you’re more likely to hear people call it) is a shiny museum housing some magnificent exhibits of contemporary art. Here you’ll see big names alongside criminally underrated and daring artists. The three-floor museum would certainly be worth every cent of your admission if it wasn’t free. But since it cost $0 to enter, there really is no excuse for not checking it out. Don’t leave without seeing the sculptures in the back patio.

2.  MIA Market

  • price 3 of 4

MIA Market

This Design District food hall (formerly named St. Roch and then Politan Row) has choices ranging from pasta and tacos to fried chicken and one of the best omakase sushi counters  in the city. It’s a great lunch spot between shopping sprees and has plenty of seating for big groups, plus a large central bar if you need a bit of liquid courage to pull the trigger on your next purchase.

3.  Design District Public Art Tours

Design District Public Art Tours

Twice a month, the Design District leads art tours, guiding curious folk around their many outdoor installations and murals including Buckminster Fuller Fly's Eye Dome , Virgil Abloh’s Dollar a Gallon , Amani Lewis’ Baltimore’s Finest  and more. The tours usually take place on the second and fourth Saturday of the month (confirm on the  Design District website  in advance). Plus, it's free so…why not go? Most people don’t realize just how much awesome public art there is in the Design District. After this tour, you won’t be one of them.

4.  Mrs. Mandolin

Mrs. Mandolin

Trendy locals love this aesthetically pleasing, Greece-inspired shop (adjacent to the ever-packed Mandolin Aegean Bistro), which offers a selection of off-the-beaten-path labels and bespoke homewares as well as coffee from a café in the front. Mrs. Mandolin is a great choice for shoppers who feel a tad intimidated by the huge, high-fashion brands dotting the Design District. This place is a little more chill (and affordable) than your average Gucci store.

5.  Dale Zine

Dale Zine

Back in 2009, Steve Saiz (a senior art director) and Lillian Banderas (a stylist manager) created Dalé with one simple goal: to showcase this city’s independent voices in a fun, approachable environment through the “most low-key format ever,” the zine. Over the years, the concept has broadened. These days, Dale is an inclusive cultural hub for the community, with offerings ranging from all-ages zine workshops to an online radio show, pop-up events, and most recently an expanded storefront and gallery space in Design District.

6.  Dior Café

  • Coffee shops
  • price 2 of 4

Dior Café

If you’re looking to escape Miami’s fast-paced lifestyle, try Dior Café. Perched atop the third floor of the Dior boutique in the Miami Design District, this petite escape is pure perfection. Surrounded by toile-covered sculptures and tropical foliage café goers are treated to a very French-inspired menu, featuring classic coffees like espressos and cappuccinos, with the always iconic Dior logo emblazoned on top. Café Dior also offers more health-conscious choices such as the trendy matcha latte. Pair any of these drinks with the light bites and you have yourself the perfect indulgence.

7.  Michael's Genuine Food & Drink

  • Contemporary American

Michael's Genuine Food & Drink

Design District’s go-to for upscale yet approachable dining is a great spot to stop for happy hour or book a reservation for brunch. Expect an ever-changing menu of seasonal classics, fresh-shucked oysters and some of the best people-watching around.

8.  de la Cruz Collection

  • Exhibitions
  • price 1 of 4

Although not as big as the ICA, de la Cruz offers another selection of art to peruse—for free. The gallery also hosts lectures and summer workshops for kids. The de la Cruz collection is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Artists in the 2018 exhibition include classics such as Dalí as well as groundbreaking modern artists like Kathryn Andrews.

9.  Andrew

Andrew

Named for the devastating hurricane that swept through Miami in the early ’90s, Andrew serves as a haven for skateboarders and sports enthusiasts. Most well-known skate brands, such as Quasi and Quartersnacks, are sold here, as well as Andrew’s own namesake collection, which includes custom boards plus kitschy accessories and local-themed swag—think canvas totes, lighters and stickers.

10.  L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon

L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon

Looking to blow your wad on a luxurious experience rather than a new handbag? Miami’s only two Michelin-starred restaurant fittingly resides in Design District. At L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami, find artfully composed, Miami-inspired contemporary French dishes (think seared scallops topped with coconut foam in a cilantro broth) in a dark and moody space. There’s an option to order à la carte, but if you can swing the price tag, go for the chef’s seasonal tasting menu.

11.  Aubi & Ramsa

  • Ice cream parlors

Aubi & Ramsa

Aubi & Ramsa is an ice cream shop selling sweets with a twist: the ice cream has booze in it. Yup, order flavors infused with scotch, tequila and more creations. And, yes, you must be 21 or older to eat. It may sound a tad odd to your taste buds but the flavor pairings are actually pretty damn good. Once you find your flavor, you’ll eat this stuff up quick. But go easy. Remember, there is alcohol in it.

12.  Kith Miami

  • South Beach

Kith Miami

The Design District outpost of this sneaker and streetwear emporium—with locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, L.A. and South Beach—carries the latest apparel and footwear collaborations from brands like Puma, Nike, Adidas and others. Look for Kith’s house brands and cool-kid accessories like preppy caps, hoodies and bags. Past the shiny displays is a petite version of famed brunch spot Sadelle's , and across the street is a tiny ice-cream parlor, Kith Treats, serving all sorts of whimsical (and pricey) cereal-inspired frozen yogurt creations.

13.  DBC Fitness

  • Sports and fitness
  • Cross-training

DBC Fitness

Fitness freaks may want to see if they can nab a training session at this sought-after gym. The owner and head trainer, David Alexander, is a legend who has trained the literal best athletes in the world. He’s the go-to guy for LeBron, Wade and every other athlete and celebrity who rolls through Miami in search of a killer workout.

The Top 8 Things to Do in the Miami Design District

design district tour miami

 CHUYN/Getty Images

There are plenty of great Miami neighborhoods where culture, food, music and shops are unique and interesting. Sure you’ve ventured off to Little Havana , Brickell and Downtown Miami and discovered all there is to do and see in these areas. But then there’s Miami Design District. A hop, skip and jump away from Wynwood (literally, you could walk from one to the other), Design District offers something a little different. MDD is teeming with art, high-end boutiques, galleries, restaurants, bars and design and architecture firms. Below are eight things to do on for day well spent in the Miami Design District. This is just a start, of course, but it’ll leave you wanting more for sure.

Get Your Stretch on at Ahana Yoga

There’s a lot of eating and imbibing on this list so a workout might be a nice way to break up the day. With daily flow, power flow and meditation classes, you don’t have to worry about yoga being too fast or slow-paced for you at Ahana. Instructors here aren’t afraid to help with adjustments and are super friendly and helpful, especially if you’re a first timer.

Enjoy Big Easy Flavors in a Food Hall Setting

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

You could easily spend all day (and by all day, we mean 9 a.m to 10 p.m. daily, the market’s operating hours) inside St. Roch Market, the New Orleans food hall that made its way to Miami early last year. The 10,000 square foot second-floor space features 12 vendors with creative menus, like Jaffa , where you can order a mushroom turmeric hummus that’s unlike anything you’ve ever tasted before. There’s a bar here, too. Plus coffee and plenty of treats to satisfy a sweet tooth. No meat, no problem. St. Roch offers an abundance of vegan options at Chef Chloe and the Vegan Cafe , too.

Indulge in Boozy Ice Cream at Aubi & Ramsa

Aubi & Ramsa

This 21+ establishment now has multiple locations throughout Miami, but the Design District storefront is still our favorite. It’s intimate and cozy inside and inventive menu items include a Tangerine Mimosa champagne sorbet as well as the Highland Truffle, a single malt ice cream made with 12-year Macallan. We’re not sure just how many scoops (or pints!) will make you feel a little tipsy, but why not go and see for yourself?

Window Shop at the Best Luxury Boutiques

Chanel, Cartier, Creed, Hermes, Fendi, Louis Vuitton — Most of these stores have one thing in common. OK, maybe two. The first is that some used to be located in Bal Harbour Shops, a suburb near the water to the north of MDD, and then moved over to this side of town. The second is that you probably can’t walk in and out without spending the equivalent of one month’s rent, which is why we suggest window shopping, unless you’re feeling like spending some major money, that is.

Go Gallery Hopping

 Miami Design District

Like walking into luxury shops, gallery hopping in MDD could result in some pretty steep purchases if your pockets are deep enough. Instead, why not map out the local galleries, showrooms and museums within walking distance and make a point of stopping in at a handful that intrigue you. Snap some pics (of course, always ask if it’s OK first — most galleries will allow you to take photos with the flash off) and ogle the talents of artists from all over the world.

Take a Free Guided Art Tour Through MDD

If wandering around on your own doesn’t sound so fun, make sure your visit coincides with Margery Gordon’s bi-weekly public art tours . The journalist, art critic and educator hosts walking tours one Wednesday evening and one Saturday afternoon every month (check the MDD website for schedule and more details). All tours meet in the front of Fly’s Eye Dome on the first floor of MDD’s Palm Court and will highlight new and classic art and design by local and world-renowned artists. Everyone is welcome to join for a tour, so bring the kiddos along if you think they’ll enjoy it.

Go Wine Tasting at Abaco Premium Wines

Abaco Premium Wines

Try some wines by the glass or go rogue and opt for bottle service (we are in Miami, after all) at Abaco Premium Wines, located on the second floor of MDD’s Palm Court. Cheese and charcuterie plates are available for purchase here, too. Have burning questions about grapes? Abaco employs sommeliers who will answer all your questions and advise you on which wines pair best with whatever you plan on eating. If you’re a fan of rosé, you’re also in luck. Abaco hosts Sunday Afternoon Rosé Wine Tastings for $15 per person. This includes light bites and a discussion on the rosé winemaking process. Check the Abaco website for other scheduled events, such as the Fried Chicken and Bubbles Wine Tasting — because everything pairs well with bubbles!

Get Dressed Up and Grab Drinks at Swan’s Bar Bevy

If you want to be transported to a place outside Miami, dress in something chic and head to dinner at the new and swanky Swan, then go for cocktails upstairs at the restaurant’s Bar Bevy. The sceney spot, which is partially owned by Pharrell, draws lots of celebrities to the area and its Modern European cuisine ranges in price from two to four dollar signs. It should go without saying that the playlist here is always on point and the desserts are a little extra special. You can’t ever go wrong with chocolate mousse and a cocktail.

"I was 27 when we moved into the house and I didn't really appreciate it as much as i do now - all these wonderful things - i thought - well this is just how houses are but - no (laughs)

"There are terrific people who live here," said Lucky Weddigan.

Lange: "How long have you lived here?"

"Fifty-one years," she said.

Weddigan's house is also on the tour - her fun-loving personality reflected in her eclectic and colorful home -  but it's not the only thing that keeps her there.

"One of the reasons we couldn't move, is we couldn't find another neighborhood that had people like this in it," she said.

The architectural detail - the beautiful homes - the wonderful people - it's not unheard of for people to come for the Home Tour - and end up staying.

"We came to the 2012 home tour and that was it," said Lisa Jones.  "We then feverishly looked for a place to live and we found it. So it happens - it happens often."

Lisa Jones and Dinah Dittman are co-chairs of the Home Tour - which is Saturday, September 14th, and features six homes in the University District between Six and Seven Mile just east of Livernois - all with different design details - and unique architectural treasures.

"We like to show off - we know what a fabulous community we live in, we just want to share that with everyone," Jones said.

Tickets are $30 and proceeds go toward neighborhood activities. They are expecting hundreds of people and will have food trucks, merchandise for sale - and plenty of water - but please bring your own reusable water bottles.

"There will be plenty of places to refill your water bottle - there's shade and rest at each of the homes on the tour - we just want people to come and have a good time," Dittman said.

New record shop Terrestrial Funk in Design District offers collections of vinyl records, cassettes, CDs and more

Streaming music on your phone is cool and all, but man, do we miss the days of physically holding an album. Lucky for us, there is a new record shop in the Design District that can give you what you’re missing. Deco’s music expert, Alex Miranda, is here to tell us more.

Deco is all about the sights, sounds and, most importantly, vibes. That’s why our ears perked up when we heard about one pop-up record shop with the funniest-sounding name: Terrestrial Funk

Remember the days of vibing out to a classic album at a record store? Well, those days have come again, thanks to Miami’s newest record shop, Terrestrial Funk.

Ivette Lozano: “Terrestrial Funk has been an online record store for almost a decade now, and now we have this pop-up here in the Design District.”

This pop-up didn’t just “pop up,” though. It’s been a long time coming.

Ivette Lozano: “Brother Dan, our founder and friend, has been collecting all of the records for almost 10 years now, so it was time to put in place somewhere physical.”

So, are you in the mood to dance? Great, because there’s more where that came from.

Ivette Lozano: “There’s definitely a big collection of dance music, there’s a big collection, as well as South African boogie.”

If you don’t have dance fever, not a problem. There are plenty of other genres to choose from.

Ivette Lozano: “We carry thousands of records from across the world.”

And you know that hard-to-find tape you’ve spent ages searching for? Well, it’s probably here.

Ivette Lozano: “One of the biggest things is bringing forward an opportunity to get your hands on ultra-rare records.”

This place even lets you test out the product before you buy it. It’s got an in-store listening station.

Sade (singing): “You give me the sweetest taboo.”

But vinyl, CDs and cassettes aren’t the only things on display here.

Ivette Lozano: “We sell vintage clothes as well, so we’re not just a record store. We also have handmade jewelry, we have plants, and we have just about everything.”

Guests are already enjoying the spot.

Gabi Ruano: “This place is extremely welcoming, and the taste that is put into a spot like this, like, just the curation of a spot like this, is absolutely outstanding.”
