Kedarnath – How to plan a trip [Complete Travel Guide]

Shefali Joshi

Kedarnath is a divine Hindu settlement situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the Char Dhams located in the Himalayas, and is situated at an astounding height of 3584 meters above sea level near the head of Mandakini River.

The Kedarnath temple lies amidst the majestic snow-capped Garhwal Himalayan ranges and is thronged by thousands of tourists and pilgrims each year. Also, the Kedarnath trek is stunningly beautiful and quite eclectic, even in the trekking circuit.

Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath Closed for Winters

Famous for the ancient shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, it offers a calm atmosphere with a beautifully painted backdrop thanks to the rhododendron woods, snow-covered mountains, and splendid sights of nature. An amalgamation of devoutness and adventure is what makes it incomparable. A MUST VISIT for one and all.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Kedarnath

Kedarnath literally means the Lord of the field, and it is so called because the “crop of liberation” grows here. While it is not certain who constructed the temple or when! One of the earliest references of Kedarnath is in the 7th or 8th century. It is also believed that Adi Shankara died near the sanctuary.

History & Mythology

It is believed that post the battle of Kurukshetra, Pandavas went on a journey to Banaras in order to repent killing their own and seek blessings from the Lord. But, Shivji wanted to avoid meeting with the brothers, and thus, took solace in Guptakashi.

However, Pandavas were relinquishing in their search for the Lord and when they found him, Shivji decided to take the form of buffalo so that they couldn’t recognize him. Now, when Shivji saw the Pandavas approaching closer, he wanted to hide even further.

Thus, He took the decision to also become invisible by way of going underground. However, brother Bhīma tried hard to stop him from leaving by holding on to the legs and tail of the bull. Unfortunately, the Lord dived and evaporated at that place leaving behind his hump which is now worshipped at Kedarnath Temple.

It is however believed that through cosmic energy, the Pandavas were exempted from their sins and Shivji informed that from then onwards He would be present in Jyotirlinga form at Kedarnath.

Located in the Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is the most remote of all Chota Char Dham sites. Situated near the Chorabari Glacier – the source of the Mandakini river, Kedarnath is flanked by snow-capped peaks – most prominently the Kedarnath mountain (6,940 mts) and the Kedar Dome (6,831 mts). Located at a distance of 223 KM from Rishikesh, the town is built on a barren stretch of land on the shored of the river.

The town unfortunately suffered extensive destruction during 2013 due to flash floods caused by torrential rains in Uttarakhand. The temple magnificently survived the harsh calamities!

In line with the Himalayan weather, Kedarnath experiences cool summers while the winters are extremely difficult and harsh. Summer is ideal for all sight-seeing, temple visits and experiencing nearby attractions as well. The average temperature is around 17 degrees in the summer.

Monsoon months are difficult and the area has suffered extreme rainfall many times, particularly in 2013. Monsoon weather is around 12 degrees. Winters are cold, complex and inhabitable. The palki of Lord Kedarnath is transferred to its winter abode near Guptakashi – Ukhimath from November to April. Weather in this season is always in the negative!

How to get there

Kedarnath is well connected with most of the important towns of Uttarakhand. The nearest road head to Kedarnath is about 18 KMs later, Gaurikund.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the closest airport, at a distance of 238 KMs. The airport is well connected to Delhi with daily flights. Taxis are easily available from the airport to Gaurikund.

The nearest railway station to Kedarnath is Rishikesh, at a distance of 216 KMs before Kedarnath on NH58. Further, Gaurikund is well connected by motorable roads with Rishikesh. Taxis and buses are easily available to reach Gaurikund.

Prior to reaching Kedarnath, the last motorable point is Gaurikund. From there on out, you’ll be trekking for 16-odd-km. Gaurikund is connected with major destinations in North India. Buses and shared cabs are available from Haridwar, Rishikesh & Rudraprayag to Sonprayag, the last point until which private vehicles are allowed.

Buses to Rishikesh and Shrinagar are available from ISBT, Kashmiri Gate. From Sonprayag, there is a shared cab facility offered by the government, where the cab will drop you in Gaurikund for a fee.

Helicopter Options

You may even get a helicopter ride if you’re not into trekking (although I strongly recommend the trek!). The services are available from different helipads such as Guptkashi, Sersi, Phata etc.

What to do in Kedarnath

Given that Kedarnath is a religious destination, clearly the centermost attraction are places with mythological connotations.

Kedarnath Temple

Enveloped in the mighty Garhwal Himalayas, the Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath Temple is among the 275 temples of Paadal Petra Sthalams (the most powerful Shiva temples in the world) and is also the most important among the Panch Kedars.

With fresh air synonymous with the hills and stunning views that you have to earn – you will lose all sense of time here! For thousands of year, this place has been worshipped and the energy of the region is that of positivity, hope and beliefs for the future.

Inside the temple, you’ll be greeted with a small hall with images of Parvati as well as the Pandavas. The hall is decorated with statues of Krishna, Pandavas, Draupadi, Virbhadra and many other deities! There is a conical rock inside the temple which is worshipped as the Sadashiva (forever Shiv).

Made from grey stones which are interlocked with the use of iron clamps – the temple is truly striking in the backdrop of Himalayas.

Gandhi Sarovar

Gandhi Sarovar is a small crystal clear lake, also known as Chorabari Tal. This is so because it is situated on the mouth of Chorabari Bamak glacier. Gandhi Sarovar lies on the foot of Kedarnath and Kirthi Stambh peak at an astounding altitude of 3,900mts above sea level. The lake comes after completed further 4 KMs trek from Kedarnath Temple.

Kalimath is a religious place located on the banks of Saraswati river. Located at a height of 1800 mts, Kalimath is one of the 108 Shakti Peeths in India. Kalimath lies on lap of nature offering salubrious and divine environment. Goddess Kali Temple is located in Kalimath. Legends believe that after killing Raktbeej, Kali Goddess went underneath the ground at this place!

Bhairav Temple

Bhairavnath Temple or Bhairon Baba Mandir is situated south of the Kedarnath temple on the eastern hill of the lofty Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Bhairav – the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with destruction and devastation. The temple offers some stunning views of the Himalayas and it is a beautiful portion of your journey to Kedarnath!

What things to carry on cold weather Spiti or Ladakh winter bike ride? [8 Must-Have Items]

Gaurikund Temple

Gaurikund temple is a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. According to myths and legends, this is the place where Goddess Parvati did penance involving ascetic and yoga practices to win over Shiva’s heart. It is believed that Lord Shiva admitted his love for the Goddess here and they then married at Triyuginarayan temple.

Shankaracharya Samadhi

Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher, credited with unifying and establishing the main thoughts in Hinduism. At the age 32, he decided to attain moksha at Kedarnath and merged under with the land near the Kedarnath Temple. The samadhi is situated right behind the temple.

What to do around Kedarnath

There is so much to explore around the Kedarnath Temple. So, remember to keep some time at hand to truly immerse yourself into the experience!

Vasuki Tal Lake

Vasuki Tal is a high glacial lake situated at an impressive altitude of 14,200 feet above sea level near Kedarnath Dham. One can spot Brahma Kamal and other Himalayan flowers blooming around the placid lake, making for some spectacular views.

Ideally, I would suggest you complete the route in the day time itself, and spend the night at Kedarnath! The trek distance from Kedarnath temple is 8 KMs, initial 3-4 KMs is easy before the ascend begins. The icy Vasuki Tal is just 900 meters downhill from Vasuki top.

Guptkashi is situated 47kms before the holy shrine of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath. It is located on the route to Kedarnath on a ridge on the west side of the Mandakini river valley at an elevation of 1,319mts above sea level.

Guptkashi is a religiously important town of Uttarakhand as it houses ancient temples like Vishwanath temple and Ardhnareshwar temple. A highly revered attraction, Manikarnika Kund is where two streams of the Ganga and Yamuna meet.

Kedarnatha Trek

Kedarnatha trek is in one of the most significantly religious areas, especially in the Hindu Mythology. The Temple of Lord Kedarnatha (Shivji), which sits at the base of the summit, has stood the test of time and is revered amongst spiritual believers.

Millions of pilgrims move mountains to offer their prayers and seek blessings of the Hindu Deity each year. The temple itself lies at the base of the Kedarnath Peak, facing the Kedar Parvat. A beginner level trek, Kedarnath is especially beautiful in the winter months.

One of the most remarkable crests in the Himalayan region, both nature lovers and ardent trekkers tend to enjoy the experience.

Char Dham Yatra

The Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand is the four abodes of holy shrines – Badrinath , Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri . All four of these temples are situated within the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The prominence of the Charm Dham Yatra is immense amongst Hindus.

Moreover, it is believed that every Hindu should do Char Dham Yatra at least once in their lifetime. The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century.

Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year. Thus, it is very common to complete the circuit in one religious pilgrimage!

Char Dham Yatra 2011 Begins

Best places to stay near Kedarnath

There is a huge government-run tented colony along with cottages as well as rooms run by GMVN. These are sufficient to home more than a thousand pilgrims and visitors. Also, there are hotels, guest houses, and Dharamshala as well.

A lot of folks have started taking the journey via helicopters and thus stay locations can be Phata, Rampur, Gaurikund, Sitapur etc.

Best places to eat

Unfortunately, the only option for decent food here is the food stalls and roadside dhabas. Food available is mostly north Indian cuisine. Of course, given the highly revered place in Hinduism that Kedarnath holds, it should come as no surprise that alcohol and non-vegetarian food is not served/ is prohibited.

Things to keep in mind

  • As instructed by the Uttarakhand government, it is necessary for every traveler to do bio-metric registration. The facility is available online as well. Alternatively, you may also do the same at Sonprayag.
  • You can easily find mules & porters to accompany you on your journey. Do remember to check the prices officially posted so as to avoid paying a larger sum
  • Also, if you are hiring porters or mule owners – remember to check their official IDs
  • It is always wise to avoid the hilly terrain in the monsoon season. Especially given the tragedy of 2013, and how badly Kedarnath was hit. If you are still heading there in the monsoon period – do check with officials and local authorities
  • Photography is not allowed in the temple premises. Be mindful of the fact and abide by the rules of the temple authorities.

Tips when travelling to Kedarnath

  • The trek is 16 KM long and will take you 6 hours, depending on your health
  • Try to start your trek early in the morning to avoid the harshness of the afternoon sun
  • Remember to eat a hearty (though not heavy) breakfast
  • Drink water and stay hydrated. However, do remember to carry your own water bottles.

Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi:  Behind the Kedarnath temple is the idol of Adi Shankaracharya, which is about 12 feet high. It was Adi Shankaracharya who established Kedarnath Dham as a Matha. It is believed that the Adi guru first experienced Samadhi at this place. This tomb is situated in the middle of a circular building. The statue was unveiled by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on November 05, 2021. So its must visit on your Kedarnath tour.

Guptkashi:  Guptkashi is situated at a distance of 45 km from Kedarnath, the main stop of Kedarnath Yatra and one of the spiritual places of Uttarakhand. Sonprayag:  Sonprayag is one of the five Prayags of Uttarakhand. Prayag, i.e., confluence, this Prayag is situated on the banks of the confluence of Vasuki Ganga and Alaknanda river. Sonprayag is also known for its spiritual significance, where Shiva held the last stop for Trijuginarayan’s marriage to his marriage with Parvati, which is why this place is also considered as the last stop of Kedarnath Yatra.

Situated at a walking height of about 1.5 km from Kedarnath Temple, this scenic beauty is a prime destination for both the spiritual and the adventurous. Kedarnath Travel Guide – Unforgettable trip to the land of Shiva

Kedarnath itinerary.

Kedarnath travel guide

Kedarnath is one of the most revered and geographically stunning Shiva temples in India. The temple flanked by the massive Kedarnath and Kedar Dome peaks instantly takes your breath away. Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, it is one of the four major Hindu pilgrimage sites that form the Char Dham Yatra. Every year thousands of pilgrims embark on this journey of faith, devotion and self discovery. Though we did a lot of online research before the trip, we felt there were several things it didn’t prepare us for. For that reason I thought I’d pen a detailed Kedarnath travel guide to make your trip planning easier. So let’s unravel the myths, legends and reality of this mystical land.

Kedarnathtravelguide

Kedarnath Travel Guide

Brief history and mythology.

The origins of the Kedarnath Temple is intertwined with the epic tale of the Mahabharata. After the great Kurukshetra war, the Pandava brothers sought redemption for their sins and wanted to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

However, Lord Shiva, in his divine form, decided to elude them and took refuge in Kedarnath by disguising himself as a bull. The Pandavas, determined to find Lord Shiva, followed him to the Himalayas. Later, Arjuna recognised the bull as Lord Shiva and pleaded for forgiveness. Lord Shiva was impressed by Arjuna’s devotion and determination and granted a boon. He proclaimed that he would remain in the form of a jyotirlinga (a manifestation of Lord Shiva) at Kedarnath for eternity, blessing devotees and providing them with liberation.

Over the centuries, the Kedarnath Temple has undergone several renovations and reconstructions. It’s thought to have been initially constructed by the Pandavas, but the current building, dating to the 8th century, was reconstructed by Adi Shankaracharya, a renowned philosopher and spiritual leader.

kedarnathtravelguide

Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India by the Mandakini river in the high Himalayas. Furthermore, the temple stands at an elevation of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), nestled amidst majestic snow-capped peaks and breathtaking natural beauty.

How to reach Kedarnath?

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, approximately 239 kilometers away. From there, you can hire a taxi / shared cab / bus to reach Sonprayag. Taxi’s and private vehicles are not allowed beyond Sonprayag. Nevertheless, shared jeeps ply between Sonprayag and Gaurikund, the starting point of the Kedarnath trek.

Rishikesh is the nearest rail station which is well-connected to various cities in India. Subsequently from Rishikesh, you can travel to Sonprayag by road.

We hired a private taxi with a driver for the entirety of our trip. Since it was just the two of us, it wasn’t the most cost effective option. Nonetheless if you are travelling in a group this would not only be economical but also convenient.

Lastly, you can also take the helicopter to Kedarnath from Guptkashi, Phata etc but we don’t recommend this.

Kedarnath Travel Guide and Itinerary

Many people tend to visit Kedarnath as a part of the Char Dham Yatra which begins from Yamunotri to Gangotri followed by Kedarnath and Badrinath. However our’s is just a week long itinerary to Kedarnath.

Kedarnath Travel Guide – DAY 1

Himachal – dehradun.

We took an overnight Volvo bus from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh to Dehradun, Uttarakhand. It took us around 10 hours and we reached next morning at 6:30 am.

Kedarnath Travel Guide – DAY 2

Dehradun to guptkashi.

kedarnath

Our taxi picked us up from Dehradun bus stand and thereafter we started our long drive to Guptkashi. Enroute we took a brief pit stop at Devprayag to check out the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi river. Devprayag is the last prayag (confluence) of Alaknanda River and from this point the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River is known as Ganga.

Later we crossed Rudraprayag and Augustmuni. Rudraprayag is one of the Panch Prayag of Alaknanda River, the point of confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini. There are several ancient temples in this area but we didn’t visit any this time. Having previously undertaken the Char Dham Yatra, this trip solely focused on Kedarnath due to time constraints. Guptkashi (secret Kashi) has the ancient Vishwanath and Ardhnareshwar temples and Manikarnik Kund. If you have the time it’s definitely worth visiting these marvels of Devbhoomi.

It took us around 9 hours to reach our hotel near Guptkashi due to traffic jams on the way. It should have taken around 7 hours along with the pit stops otherwise. Some patches of the roads were under construction as well.

Where to stay in Guptkashi?

Char Machan Resorts – In this remote region, accommodation options are scarce, with only a handful of resorts available. Among these, Char Machan Resort stands out as a luxurious choice. It’s important to note that ‘luxury’ here refers to a well-maintained property with essential amenities such as hot showers and comfortable beds.

After a taxing journey with minimal rest and the prospect of a challenging trek to Kedarnath ahead, finding a quality hotel for rest and recuperation was our top priority. Char Machan proved to be the ideal choice, offering a serene atmosphere, stunning mountain vistas, and a delectable buffet dinner to complete the experience

In case you’re on a budget, there are several guesthouses and homestays around to cut costs.

Cost per night for 2 – INR 7500 with breakfast and dinner.

Kedarnathtravelguide

While our stay at Char Machan was delightful, in hindsight, we realized that opting for accommodation in Sonprayag would have been a more convenient choice, even though the options there are limited to basic hotels and guesthouses.

Our visit to Kedarnath coincided with the bustling Dussehra holidays, and the sheer volume of visitors was enormous. It took us nearly three hours by car to traverse a mere 25 kilometers, reaching Sonprayag from Char Machan Resort the following morning

Kedarnath Travel Guide – DAY 3

Guptkashi to kedarnath, 1) guptkashi to sonprayag.

We had a light breakfast and departed from our resort at the crack of dawn, around 5:30 am. The distance between Char Machan resort and Sonprayag parking is 24 km. In the past, it was permissible to drive vehicles up to Gaurikund, but after the horrific floods of 2013, the last point for vehicles is now Sonprayag. There is a huge parking area at Sonprayag and thereafter you can transfer to a shared jeep towards Gaurikund.

Due to the overwhelming influx of tourists and the immense traffic congestion, our journey to Sonprayag was extended to a frustrating three hours. Ideally, the duration should have been a mere hour.

Time taken: 05:30 am to 08:30 am (3 hours)

kedarnathtrip

2) Sonprayag to Gaurikund

Our driver dropped us in close proximity to the parking area, and thereafter, we proceeded towards the designated shared jeep section. To our astonishment, we were greeted with a long and winding line of individuals eagerly awaiting their turn to board the jeeps, with thousands of people hoping to reach Gaurikund. I must admit, the crowds were disorderly and the authorities seemed unable to maintain control. Reflecting upon my previous visit to Kedarnath two decades ago, I recall it as a serene sanctuary, a haven of tranquility. Unfortunately, the present circumstances starkly contrasted with my previous experience.

We were on the verge of abandoning the queue and seeking an alternative location due to the looming possibility of a stampede. However, we opted to persevere and evaluate the situation as time progressed. Regrettably, we found ourselves waiting for a duration of over 2 hours in line for the shared jeep. The distance between Sonprayag and Gaurikund is a mere 5 km. Despite the proximity, commencing the trek from Sonprayag itself was prohibited by the authorities.

Finally, the shared jeep dropped us off at Gaurikund but it was already 11 am. The jeep fare was INR 40 per head.

Time taken: 08:30 am to 10:30 am (2 hours in queue)

3) Gaurikund to Kedarnath

At long last, we embarked on the much awaited trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. The new trekking route spans a distance of approximately 19 kilometers. The previous route, which was 14 kilometers, succumbed to the force of nature in 2013. The route is steep throughout and you climb from Gaurikund (elevation 1,982 m) to Kedarnath (elevation 3,583 m). As for the registration, we had done it online beforehand; however, no one conducted any checks.

The current route is well marked, and many establishments serve food and refreshments. There are several public toilets along the route as well. Horses or palanquins can be hired from the booking counters at Sonprayag and Gaurikund, but we urge you to refrain from doing so. Witnessing the cruelty and abuse inflicted upon these animals was a deeply distressing and disheartening experience.

  • Gaurikund to Jungle Chatti(6km) through the Rambara Bridge
  • Jungle Chatti to Bheembali (4km)
  • Bheembali to Linchauli (3km)
  • Linchauli to Kedarnath Base Camp (4km)
  • Kedarnath Base Camp to Kedarnath Temple (1km)

Owing to the unavoidable circumstances mentioned earlier, our trek commenced around 11 am, exposing us to the intense afternoon sun. Though fatigued and dehydrated, our spirits were revitalised at the sight of the Kedar dome peak, and we arrived at Kedarnath just in time to witness a magnificent sunset.

Time taken: 11 am to 6 pm (7 hours)

4) Kedarnath

We checked into our hotel (New Himachal House), left our bags and headed for the evening aarti around 7 pm. Afterwards we walked around and had some tea and jalebis at Tiwari hotel . Lastly we had dinner at our hotel and called it a night.

Kedarnath Travel Guide – DAY 4

Kedarnathtemple

Since out hotel was located in close proximity to the Kedarnath Temple, we couldn’t sleep much, courtesy of the bustling ambiance. Our day commenced with a visit to the temple for darshan, followed by a simple breakfast back at our accommodation. While our initial intention was to trek to Vasuki Tal, but a recent avalanche in the vicinity led us to revise our plans.

Amidst the Dushera holiday hustle, the temple environs were teeming with crowds. Seeking solace, we embarked on a hike to find a serene corner where we could absorb the energy of this vibrant space. While wandering, fate led us to encounter a monk who graciously invited us to his ashram. Without a set agenda, we decided to follow his lead. After a 4-kilometer hike, we arrived at the tranquil Shri Swami Ramanand Sant Ashram, nestled in solitude and centered around an ancient cave. The quietude was a treasure we had been longing for, and the cave proved to be an idyllic spot for meditation.

Following this, we visited all the famous spots around. You can check the list below – Things to do in Kedarnath .

Kedarnath Travel Guide – Day 5

Kedarnath -sonprayag -rishikesh.

Casting one last glance upon the mystical Kedarnath Temple and the towering peaks, we commenced our trek toward Gaurikund. The descent was notably smoother and considerably swifter. We started our descent earlier than planned, a strategic move to avoid the scorching sun and crowds. This ensured a delightfully pleasant journey back.

Time taken – 6:30 am to 10:30 am

Sonprayag to Rishikesh

From Gaurikund, we shared a jeep ride to Sonprayag before reuniting with our driver at the parking area, commencing the drive back to Rishikesh. The distance is around 205 kms but there were closures and jams on the way which delayed us. We settled into our hotel, enjoyed dinner, and concluded the day.

Time taken – 11 am to 8 pm (9 hours)

Where to stay in Rishikesh?

We stayed at Hotel The Great Ganga – it was 100 metres from Ram Jhula and the ghats. We had a good view from the room and food was lovely too.

Kedarnath Travel Guide – Day 6

With only a day at hand, we opted to explore Rishikesh on foot, visiting notable sites like Ram and Laxman Jhula, Beatles Ashram, and some temples.

Things to do in Kedarnath

  • Kedarnath Temple – Serving as the primary attraction and one of the 12 Jyotirlings of Shiva.
  • Bhairavnath Temple – Situated around 1 km uphill from Kedarnath, this temple is dedicated to Bhairavnath, the protector deity of the region. Moreover, it’s a great spot to enjoy a peaceful sunset too.
  • Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi – Being a distinguished Indian philosopher and theologian, Adi Shankaracharya is credited with founding four prominent monastic centers, known as mathas, in various parts of India. Consequently, this newly erected samadhi stands as a testament to his enduring legacy and teachings.
  • Vasuki Tal – This remote high glacial lake derives its name from its resemblance to the snake Vasuki, curled up around Lord Shiva’s neck. It’s an 8 km trek (one way) from Kedarnath and therefore not recommended for inexperienced trekkers.
  • Chorabari Lake / Gandhi Sarovar – A brief 3-kilometer hike from Kedarnath leads to Kanti Sarovar, now known as Gandhi Sarovar. Though regarded as spiritually significant, this lake was destroyed by the 2013 floods and has since dried up.
  • Meditation caves – For a meditative experience akin to ancient yogis, consider a visit to Hanuman Gufa and Dhyana Gufa, where solitude and reflection await.

Where to stay in Kedarnath?

Numerous guesthouses, lodges, and camps offer accommodation options in Kedarnath. Among these, we recommend considering GMVN’s Swargarohini Cottages . The cottages looked clean and had superb views,  however, due to their popularity, reservations fill up well in advance—booking at least 6 months prior to your trip is advisable. You can book directly via GMVN’s website . Since we planned Kedarnath just a few weeks in advance, we couldn’t secure accommodation here.

We stayed at New Himachal House which was a lodge right next to the temple. Though we had an ensuite room, it was rather dirty and we wouldn’t recommend it. You can book this via phone Pandit Girish Shukla – 7060753419 .

Pro-tip : Book your accommodation well in advance particularly if your travel coincides with festivals or holidays. We visited during Dussehra and the overwhelming crowds left numerous pilgrims without lodging options, not even shared tents.

What is the best time to visit Kedarnath?

Kedarnath stays open from May through October , sometimes extending until November, coinciding with the festival of Diwali. Our visit in early October provided us with ideal weather conditions. The skies were brilliantly clear, devoid of any rain, creating a picturesque backdrop. Daytime temperatures were pleasantly mild, ensuring comfortable exploration. However, the nights were quite chilly, with temperatures dropping to around zero degrees. The ideal months for a visit to Kedarnath are May and the latter part of September onwards. It’s advisable to steer clear of July and August due to the heightened monsoon activity, which brings a considerable risk of flash floods and landslides.

Pro-tip: Check the weather forecast before your trip and keep an eye out for any advisory issued by the Uttarakhand Government.

What to pack for Kedarnath?

  • Backpack – A comfortable, durable backpack with padded straps is ideal for the trek.
  • Clothing – When it comes to clothing, pack trekking pants and a couple of tops. The key here is effective layering, as afternoons can become quite warm, especially during the trek, while mornings and evenings tend to be chilly. A combination of a base layer, a cozy fleece, and a reliable jacket to stay comfortable in varying conditions. Pack a waterproof / raincoat, woollen socks and gloves.
  • Sturdy trekking shoes for the trek
  • Sleeping bags – While we opted not to carry sleeping bags, having a few bedsheets on hand proved to be quite practical. This came in handy when we encountered less-than-clean bedding at our accommodations.
  • Printed copy of your registration letter for the Kedarnath Yatra.
  • Personal medications and a basic first-aid kit
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Cash – There is an ATM at Kedarnath but best to withdraw cash beforehand.
  • Snacks – Energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits for quick snacking.

Kedarnath Budget

The budget for a Kedarnath trip can vary widely depending on your travel preferences, the mode of transportation, the type of accommodation, and the duration of your stay. Here’s a rough estimate of our trip. It will be significantly cheaper if you take public transport and stay at dorms.

We booked our accommodation and taxi via a travel agent (details in the next section)

Do you need a travel agent for Kedarnath?

Traveling to Kedarnath doesn’t necessarily require a travel agent. Our Kedarnath travel guide aims to simplify the planning process for independent travellers. In our case, we decided on our Kedarnath journey just about two weeks ahead of time, making it challenging to secure accommodation in Kedarnath through online bookings. Additionally, we needed reliable transportation for the trip.

Our initial contact with GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) Yatra office revealed that only dormitory accommodations were available in Kedarnath as the ensuite cottages were fully booked. GMVN accommodations strictly required online booking. Since we preferred a more private lodging option, we explored alternatives.

After reaching out to several tour agents, we ultimately chose Three Sixty Holidays for their hotels and transportation package. We found them to be highly professional, offering a variety of quality hotel choices. Notably, they guaranteed an ensuite room in Kedarnath, the only ones to do so.

The package cost us ₹48,000 in total for a couple.

  • 4 nights in premium hotels (breakfast + dinner)
  • Sedan taxi transfer (Dehradun to Dehradun)

How to choose a travel agent for Kedarnath?

If you’re planning your Yatra well in advance and prefer to do it on your own, our travel guide provides all the details to facilitate your journey. However, if you favour a hassle-free experience with a tour agent, we wholeheartedly recommend Three Sixty Holidays. They ensured a smooth process and were forthright about the basic conditions of Kedarnath hotels in advance. We’re grateful we chose them, considering that we saw many pilgrims facing challenges finding accommodation during our visit. Even shared tents were fully booked, and while our hotel may not have been ideal, having an ensuite room provided a significant comfort advantage.

You can contact Three Sixty Holidays via email – [email protected] or phone – +91 9258 360 360

Is there mobile network in Kedarnath?

Yes, Jio pretty much worked all over.

Kedarnath Travel Guide – Trekking tips and what not to do

kedarnathtravelguide

  • Register online beforehand to avoid queues and delays.
  • Save time by staying near Gaurikund or Sonprayag before starting your trek as the roads and traffic to Sonprayag is terrible. As shown above, we wasted a lot of time stuck and got delayed to start our trek.
  • Start your trek by 5 am to avoid the harsh afternoon sun.
  • Trek Distance and Duration  – 19 kms each way. Trek Duration can vary from individual to individual, but to offer you a reference point, our ascent took approximately 7-8 hours, while the descent required about 4 hours. It’s worth noting that we carried our own bags, each weighing 12 kilograms.
  • Pack light – We underestimated the climb and carried our laptops, DSLR’s etc and our bags were heavy. Best to pack light to make the climb easier.
  • Book accommodation in advance (at least 6 months in advance to ensure you get a good place like GMVN cottages)
  • Carry warm clothing  as temperatures fall after sunset irrespective of the month you visit. In October it was -2 in the evenings.
  • Ensure you pack a raincoat and a reusable water bottle . Afternoons often bring rain showers, so having a raincoat on hand is a smart choice. Additionally, there are water refill stations available along the route, so carrying your own bottle and avoid purchasing plastic bottles.
  • Trekking without using horses is a responsible choice to minimize your environmental impact. Witnessing the overworked horses and the unfortunate sight of many of them succumbing to exhaustion along the way was truly heart-wrenching.
  • Prior to your journey, consult the weather forecast diligently and attentively heed any warnings or advisories.
  • Public Toilets are available on the way at various places on the trekking route.
  • Don’t litter and please carry your waste back with you.

Q. How to reach Kedarnath from Gaurikund? A. It used to be a six-hour long trek to Kedarnath from Gaurikund that went past Rambara and Garur Chatti before the paths were washed away by the flash-floods of 2013. Now a new route has opened up which is 14 kilometre long starting from Gaurikund. The route goes past Jangal Chatti, nearly 4 kilometre away, followed by Chhoti Linchuli and Badi Linchuli before crossing the Mandakini River and heading to the south face of the Kedarnath peak. You can take the alternate route the goes up from Sonprayag, just 5 kilometre short of Gaurikund, and rounds up Kedarnath, going past Gomkara, Dev Vishnu and Dhumgajgiri. Q. When does the Badri Kedar Festival take place? A. The annual Badri Kedar Festival happens in June and is one of the highlights of Kedarnath. The entire town is decorated with flags, festoons and flowers and carries a festive aura. Since this is a summer festival, a time when the temple opens its doors to pilgrims, the place is packed with devotees and avid photographers and travellers. The Badri Kedar Festival goes on for eight days when artists, dancers, singers and painters come to Kedarnath and showcase their art in this fabulous setting amid all the festivity. It is a great way to get a sense of Uttarakhand’s history, culture and traditions. Q. Are there any hotels in Kedarnath? A. You can stay at the GMVN Tourist Bungalow in Kedarnath. This can be reached after a 14 kilometre trek from Gaurikund. The guesthouse has Economy Rooms, Family Suites and Dormitory with basic amenities such as attached bath and hot water supply. The property remains shut all winter owing to severe snowfall. Most other hotels are either in Rudraprayag or Sitapur, which is about 50 kilometre from Kedarnath. You can spend the night at your hotel in Rudraprayag and make a day trip to Kedarnath Temple. Q. Can Kedarnath be visited in monsoon? A. July to September are the monsoon months in Kedarnath, making landslides quite common in the area, leading to roadblocks. Rainfall makes the slopes treacherous for treks, and since it pours very heavily you can seldom venture outdoors. Though the temple remains open all of monsoon, it may not be the most pleasant times to visit Kedarnath. Q. Which are the most popular treks around Kedarnath? A. You can pursue the Gandhi Sarovar or Chorabari Tal trek which begins by the main bridge before the town where this is a paved pathway that crosses the Mandakini River and comes to a halt about 4 kilometre north of the Chorabari Glacier. It takes about two hours. On its edge is the Chorabari Tal, a placid lake also called Gandhi Sarovar since the Mahatma’s ashes were scattered here. You can even take a trek to the Bhairava Temple, an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Bhairava that is visible from the Kedarnath Temple. There is a path running diagonally along the hill surrounded by prayer flags. Close to the site is a cliff by the name of Bhairava Jhamp. Q. Can I visit Sonprayag from Kedarnath? A. Sonprayag is about 20 kilometre from Kedarnath. It is a religious site en route to the Kedarnath Temple which is among the Char Dhams. Sonprayag is a beautiful place lying at the confluence of the Basuki and Mandakini Rivers. Q. Which is the last railhead to Kedarnath? A. The Haridwar Railway Station is the closest railhead to Kedarnath. You can get direct trains to Haridwar from New Delhi, Varanasi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow among others. Some of the prominent trains that Haridwar receives include Mussoorie Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, AC Special Express, and Shatabdi Express. Once you arrive at the Haridwar Railway Station, you can hire a bus or a cab to Gaurikund which is about 125 kilometre away, and further on do the trek to Kedarnath Temple. Q. Are there buses from Dehradun for Kedarnath? A. Dehradun runs direct buses to Kedarnath by way of Volvo AC sleeper, semi-sleeper, non-AC sleeper and seater buses. The 254 kilometre distance is covered by these buses from Dehradun to Gaurikund. The remainder of the distance to the Kedarnath Temple needs to be accomplished by foot. Q. How to go on Vasuki Tal trek from Kedarnath? A. The trek begins from a place close to the GMVN Tourist Bungalow and goes all the way to the Vasuki Tal which is at 13,566 foot. The 9-kilometre-long trek takes anywhere between 4 to 5 hours to complete. Once you get to the beautiful Vasuki Tal, you will be surrounded by snow- dusted peaks of Chaukhamba, their beauty reflected in the serene, still waters of the lake. Q. When does the Kedarnath Temple open? A. The Kedarnath Temple closes in the winter months due to heavy snowfall, and remains closed for six months between November and April. During this period, the idol of Lord Kedarnath along with the palanquin is moved to Ukhimath near Guptakashi, with the priests and other residents relocating to nearby villages. You can visit the Kedarnath Temple anytime from April to November, the summer and monsoon months.

Kedarnath Itinerary

Planning an itinerary for the Kedarnath Temple is crucial to ensure that you have enough time to complete the trek and explore the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Here is a suggested Kedarnath itinerary that you can follow to plan your trip to Kedarnath temple.

Here is an ideal itinerary that you can use as a guideline:

Day 1: Arrival in Haridwar or Rishikesh

  • Day 5: Trek from Kedarnath to Gaurikund (16 km, 4-5 hours)
  • Day 6: Drive from Gaurikund to Haridwar or Rishikesh (8-9 hours)

However, you can adjust the itinerary based on your preferences and fitness level.

Things To Keep in Mind Before the Kedarnath Trip

  • Take enough time to acclimatize
  • Plan for extra days
  • Hire a guide or porter
  • Check for seasonal closures
  • Be prepared for emergencies
  • Check for accommodation availability
  • Carry enough cash

Take enough time to acclimatize: It is important to acclimatize properly to avoid altitude sickness. Plan for a rest day at Kedarnath or on the way up to Gaurikund.

Plan for extra days: Unforeseen weather conditions or travel disruptions may cause delays. Plan for extra days to avoid rushing through the trek or missing your return journey.

Hire a guide or porter: If you are not an experienced trekker, consider hiring a guide or porter who can help you navigate the trail and carry your backpack.

Check for seasonal closures: The Kedarnath Trek is closed during the winter season (November to April) due to heavy snowfall. Plan your trek accordingly.

Be prepared for emergencies: Carry a satellite phone, emergency contact numbers, and a first aid kit in case of any emergencies.

Check for accommodation availability: There are several options for accommodation on the Kedarnath Trek, but they can fill up quickly during peak season. Book your accommodation in advance.

Carry enough cash: There are no ATMs on the Kedarnath Trek, so carry enough cash to cover your expenses.

Information on Kedarnath

Planning a trip to Kedarnath? Here’s everything you need to know

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic hit all of us, we travelled in the third week of October 2020, a trip to Kedarnath via Rishikesh. Corona was posing a huge threat and we were fully aware of it. However, we did quite a bit of reading and understood that Uttarakhand was one of those safe states to travel to. We also learnt that Rishikesh and Kedarnath were less crowded than usual.

Before you read any further, if the pandemic situation is still the same as October 2020, kindly read this to know how we planned our entire trip to Rishikesh and Kedarnath and stayed careful.

Best time to plan a trip to Kedarnath

Every year, on the day of Shivratri, the priests will announce the date of opening and closing the temple. While the temple opens sometime in April, it closes on the day of Bhai Dooj. The remaining six months, Kedarnath faces heavy snow fall during the winter, making it impossible for people to visit.

Nature Kedarnath

Locals told us that beginning of September or just before closing is the right time to visit Kedarnath as the crowd will be lesser. We, however, would suggest October second or third week as the weather is just perfect.

Minimum number of days for a trip to Kedarnath

A trip to Kedarnath requires a minimum of 5 days from either Dehradun or Rishikesh. That’s because the Jolly Grant Airport, the nearest airport to Kedarnath is almost in between Dehradun and Rishikesh, thus serving as a good starting point for a trip to Kedarnath.

Walking Route Kedarnath

Day One: Dehradun Airport to Rishikesh

From Jolly Grant Airport (keeping COVID-19 in mind), we did not want to take public transport after exiting. On a regular day, this would have been the cheapest way to reach Rishikesh. The pre-paid taxis from the Airport could cost anywhere around Rs. 900 – 1200, depending on the location of the hotel/hostel. We walked a few metres away from the airport and saw a few taxi guys who were offering lesser rates to get to Rishikesh. We negotiated and took a taxi for Rs. 700 to Blue Jay Hostels (hostel review coming up soon!).

It takes about 40 minutes to cover approximately 20 km to reach Rishikesh.

A walk in Rishikesh

Mostly the first day will depend on when you reach, check-in etc. However, walking to Laxman Jhula and dinner at one of the famous cafes/restaurants could be a great way to start soaking oneself in this small holy yet hippie town.

Day Two: Rishikesh to Sonprayag

Start at 9 AM from Rishikesh so there is ample time to reach Sonprayag. The usual route to Sonprayag will be via Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Agastyamuni/Augustmuni and Phata.

Villages on the way to Sonprayag

This route is about 215 km long and takes 9-11 hours to reach the destination. The construction along the route and the narrow roads leads to traffic jam in each and every corner. Sometimes, because of blasting and road construction, the Devprayag route may be closed. This detour of 30-40 km will add another 2-3 hours of journey time (via Tehri Garhwal).

Interesting things about Devbhoomi

  • Devprayag is a confluence of two rivers – Bhagirathi and Alaknanda. River Saraswathi which originates underground also joins the other two rivers. This confluence forms the river Ganga or Ganges.

Devbhoomi Uttarakhand

  • Dhari Devi Temple between Srinagar and Rudraprayag. This temple is located on the banks of Alaknanda. The people believe that Dhari Devi is the guardian of the Chota Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. The authorities tried to remove the idol of Dhari Devi idol from the original place twice, once in the 1800s and once in 2013. The locals say that this has only resulted in natural calamities. The 2013 flood in Kedarnath washed away many villages and people. The country witnessed one of the worst natural disasters and some of the wounds are still fresh.

Guardian Deity of Uttarakhand

Other than traffic, lunch and tea, we never really stopped. We reached Sonprayag at around 7 pm, covering a distance of approximately 210 km in 10 hours. Yes, the roads were that bad. We checked in to GMVN Sonprayag and luckily got the entire dorm for ourselves.

Kedarnath Walking Route

Day Three: Sonprayag – Phata – Kedarnath

Start at 9 am to Triyugi Narayan Temple. It’s a 10 km drive with stunning views. This temple has a fascinating history and there’s an amazing vibe about the whole place.

Oldest temple in Uttarakhand

Goes without saying, do not miss this temple during your Kedarnath trip 🙂

Kedarnath by Walk / Mules / Helicopters

Kedarnath by walk: The walk to Kedarnath starts from Gaurikund. Private vehicles and taxies are stopped at a check-point in Sonprayag post which there are SUVs which take us to Gaurikund. The walking distance between Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 18 km (although it is mentioned as 16.5 km). The time to cover the distance is anywhere between 6 and 12 hours depending on one’s fitness level. So starting early in the morning will help in reaching Kedarnath before the night sets in.

Walk Kedarnath

Walking down took us exactly 5 hours. We started at 10 AM and reached Gaurikund at 3 PM. We booked a full taxi for ourselves for Rs. 300. Else you will have to share the drive with 8-10 other people which was a big no for us at these times.

Kedarnath on mules: You can go up in mules from multiple points. Costs differ from time to time, and also from the point you wish to take. Food, water and restrooms are all available along the way.

Donkeys in Kedarnath

Kedarnath via helicopter: You can book helicopters in advance. We booked the 12 to 3 pm slot on Pawan Hans and took off from Phata. The helicopter took us from Phata to Kedarnath in exactly takes 9 minutes. You can also book the Prasad at the helicopter base.

Visiting the Kedarnath Temple

Once we landed in Kedarnath, we walked a bit and checked-in at Swargrohini Cottages. We reached on time to see the afternoon aarti before they shut the temple. Police ensured no one roams without a mask. If you have time to spare, you can also visit the Bhairavnath Temple, which is on the eastern direction.

Kedarnath Temple exterior

If you are a single traveller, you can also stay in the Rudra Cave which is on the western side. Enjoy the evening aarti which starts at 6 pm and takes place for about an hour. The next morning, at around 5:30 am (please check sunrise time), catch the first rays of the sun hitting the mountains behind the temple. Such sights are magnificent.

You will see long queues to enter the temple. We, however, suggest that you enter the temple after 8 am when the crowds are much lesser. Lesser time in the queue and also more time inside the temple. Win-win, no? 🙂

The stone behind the temple is something you shouldn’t miss. During the 2013 floods, the stone diverted the gushing water to the sides of the temple, saving those who went inside to take refuge. The flood also destroyed the Samadhi of Adi Shankara. You can ask the pandits there to see the idol (we weren’t able to).

Important things to note when planning your trip to Kedarnath

vegetarian food in Uttarakhand

  • E-Pass: Please ensure you have taken two e-passes, 1. Uttarakhand on Smart Dehradun Portal and 2. Individual E Pass for the Char Dham, in this case, for Kedarnath.
  • Commute : We didn’t see any public transport from Rishikesh to Sonprayag. This could be because of the COVID-19 restrictions. It would be best to hire a taxi or go by your own transport (bike/car).
  • Food : There are many small roadside shops and few big tea shops, restaurants that you find on the highways. In Rishikesh, there are many nice Ganga facing cafes/restaurants such as Little Buddha Cafe, Freedom Cafe, VJ’s Pizza and many more. In Kedarnath, you have a lot of options closer to the temple. We recommend Tiwari Hotel & Restaurant.
  • ATM’s : Withdraw cash in advance as ATM’s are few in number. Please note, mostly or only cash accepted. Very few places accept Digital payments.
  • Water : Mostly, natural water, wherever available can be refilled. Less plastic, remember? 🙂
  • Helicopter: There are multiple services. Book your helicopter to Kedarnath .
  • Weather : November to March is heavy snow season, April to June is summer, July to August is usually the rainy season and winter sets in from September.

We had a wonderful darshan and once we came back, we self quarantined ourselves at home and we suggest you do that too. We are glad our trip was safe from the Coronavirus.

We can now safely say, “thank god we took this trip”, and if you are going, stay safe and travel safer!

A Pilgrim’s Travel Guide to Kedarnath Dham, India

18 mar a pilgrim’s travel guide to kedarnath dham, india.

I had never thought that I would embark on this journey so young in life. The truth is, I am still finding faith and I am not even sure what to feel when I go to most religious places in India. But I will be there someday. I planned the trip to Kedarnath Dham for my parents and extended family and I took the opportunity to accompany them. So I learned a lot.

I cannot give you too many details on the religious aspect of it, just yet. But I can help you with practical guides on how to reach Kedarnath Dham, the ways you can travel to the shrine, how to book transport, where to stay and more. It should get you a long way in planning your own trip.

I did have mixed feelings at a lot of places on the way. And while I don’t think I can refrain from adding my personal comments, I shall try to keep them as impartial as I can. Let’s start with the basics.

Kedarnath-Badrinath

A Brief History of Kedarnath

Kedarnath is one of the four dhams of the north – Kedarnath, Badrinath , Gangotri and Yamunotri (the actual four dhams are Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannath Puri and Rameshwaram). It is also one of the 12 jyotirlingas in India and the highest of all. Kedarnath is considered extremely holy and also very difficult to reach.

But the actual history of Kedarnath starts with Pandavas. It was after the war of Mahabharatha that the Pandavas along with Draupadi were looking for penance. It was a deep sin to kill your own kin and they were seeking forgiveness from Lord Shiva in the highlands of the Himalayas. They spotted Lord Shiva right where the Kedarnath shrine is today.

Lord Shiva was not ready to forgive them. So he disguised himself as a bull and buried himself in the ground so that he could not be identified. However, the Pandavas did identify him and Bhima tugged at his tail and hind legs. Lord Shiva was buried deeper into the earth and reappeared in five places – the hump in Kedarnath, the arms in Tunganath, the belly in Madhyamaheshwar, the face in Rudranath and the head in Kalpeshwar. These together make the Panch Kedar.

The Pandavas eventually built temples at all five of these places that freed them from their sins.

Where is Kedarnath Located?

Kedarnath is located in the deep interiors of Uttarakhand bordering Tibet. On one side, there are the mountains of Gangotri and the origin point of Ganga. On the other side, is the holy land of Badrinath. However to reach any of these locations you will have to take a long detour by road.

Sonaprayag, the last village before Kedarnath is 210km from Rishikesh by road and 246km from Dehradun. While it may not seem so far, it can take upto 10 hours to make the journey. Kedarnath is also located at a height of 11,755 ft and you cannot reach the main shrine by road or by vehicle. There are quite a few ways to reach the shrine. Refer to the ‘how to reach’ section below.

When is Kedarnath open for visitors

The opening and closing dates of Kedarnath vary every year since it is based on the Hindu calendar. As of now, the shrine is open from the first day of Vaishakh (April – May) and closes on the first day of Karthik (October – November). Usually, the day of Diwali marks the first day of the closure of the temple.

During winters, the temple as well as the area is covered in deep snow and goes into a slumber. The temple is not accessible anymore.

During the day, the temple is open from 4 am in the morning till 3 pm in the afternoon. It closes for lunch then and reopens again at 5 pm till 9 pm at night. The morning puja takes place between 4.00 am – 7.00 am and the evening puja between 6.00 pm – 7.30 pm.

How to reach Kedarnath

To reach Kedarnath Dham, you first need to travel to Guptakashi. From there you can choose one of the many modes of transportation.

Reaching Guptakashi

There is no airport or railway station in or near Guptakashi. So the only way to reach is by road. The closest airport to Guptakashi is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun and the closest railway station is Yog Nagri Station at Rishikesh. If you cannot find a direct train to Rishikesh, Haridwar is a great alternative as well.

If you are travelling in a group, it is very convenient to book a vehicle for yourself. You can book a car/tempo traveller depending upon the number of people anywhere ranging from a 4-seater to a 17-seater.

Several tour operators run transportation services on this route and you can easily find them online. Make sure your negotiated cost includes the driver’s cost, parking and toll charges. The taxi rate for a 4-wheeler starts from ₹3,500 per day and that of a tempo traveller is ₹6,000 per day (as of 2022). This will vary depending on the vehicle and peak season time.

If you wish to take a public vehicle, you can take a bus from Rishikesh from the local bus stop . Continuous buses run from 6 am to 10 pm every day to most locations in Uttarakhand including Guptakashi and all the way to Gaurikhand. If you wish to book one online beforehand, head over to redbus.in or abhibus.com .

Guptakashi to Kedarnath

Once you reach Guptakashi, you can stay over for a night before you head to the next step of your journey. You can reach Kedarnath from Gupatakshi in the following ways:

It is the most natural way of travelling to Kedarnath. In fact, a hard trek usually makes the essence of a pilgrimage. The trek starts at Gaurikund where you will find a manmade trail all the way to the top at Kedarnath. You can take a local shared jeep to travel to Gaurikund from Guptakashi or Sonaprayag for ₹30. The trail to the top is around 18km on foot.

The trail has been changed to what it was before the floods of 2013 and is safer and more convenient for pilgrims. This is the route that you would follow:

1. Start at Gaurikund (take a shared taxi from Sonaprayag)

2. Gaurikund to Jungle Chatti (6km)

3. Jungle Chatti to Bheembali (4km)

4. Bheembali to Linchauli (3km)

5. Linchauli to Kedarnath Base Camp (4km)

6. Kedarnath Base Camp to Kedarnath Temple (1km)

The trek is considered hard. Even for people used to physical activity. It gets tough as you climb up in altitude. Rain can halt all climbing activities if you are there during the monsoons. Many pilgrims find themselves returning halfway. Therefore, hope for a successful journey, and don’t take unnecessary risks in unfavourable conditions. Keep a spare day or two if you need to wait for the next day.

There are quite a few restaurants, tea stalls and guest houses on the way. Medical emergency help is also available but there are stretches with only wilderness. Pilgrims are only allowed to start their trek between 4 am and 1.30 pm. So you need to start super early. Or you can halt at one of the resthouses in the middle of the night if you plan to start late.

You will also need accommodations on top that you can pre-book. GMVN guesthouses are some of the most comfortable accommodations at the base camp. During peak season, it is very hard to find both transportation and accommodation, so make sure you have proper arrangements. It is not advisable to descend on the same day or trek on the trail after dark since the path is unlit at night.

If you wish to do this trek in a group with other people check out this trek by Thrillophilia . If you wish to travel on your own, check out this blog by taleof2backpackers who share their experience.

The trek to Kedarnath

2. By Ponies or Palkis

This is just an alternative to travelling by the same trail as above. If you still wish to take the trail and are unsure of the time or physical capacity, you can opt to take a pony. Ponies are available at the booking counter at Gaurikund and you can take one to the camps on the way (as mentioned above) or all the way to Kedarnath.

A pony one-way would cost you ₹ 2500 to Kedarnath (in 2022) and less if you wish to hire one for a short stretch. But while the rates are fixed by the government, many do not follow this since the demand for ponies or palkis by the pilgrims is much higher.

In peak season, expect to pay between 2-5 times the stated price. You can refer to the standard price rates here . If you have kids with you, it is better to take ponies and ride with them since it will be hard to keep up with ponies on foot.

Palkies (carried by 4 men) are not available for all. Only the elderly and children can opt for palkis. If you are capable enough to walk, it is advisable that you look for other options. A third option is pitthu. It refers to the local men carrying a large basket with a seat on their backs.

They carry you on their back as they climb up. And while it may not be a favourable choice for many since it looks cruel, it is a desperate option with no alternatives. Make sure you tip them extra well.

3. By Helicopter

If you are confident that the trek is not for you, the best option is to take the helicopter. In recent years many private services in the area have started their operations. You can opt for any of them to book a helicopter from a base in Guptakashi to the helipad in Kedarnath.

Helicopter services are available from three different locations around Guptakashi operated by the following operators:

You can book a helicopter online where the booking usually starts one month in advance. However, it could be extremely hard to get a booking since it gets sold out the moment bookings open. You may be able to secure a booking at the GMVN office in Guptakashi but do not rely on it. Instead, try to find a local agent who can book on your behalf for some additional fees.

Reach your helipad well before time and register at the counter. It may take up to 2-3 hours for your turn from the time of registration. You will have to do the same process from Kedarnath while returning as well. So get an early slot from the base if you wish to return on the same day.

In case you are flying from the base later in the day, book a room at Kedarnath to return back the next day. Helicopter rides get cancelled often (one or both ways) and a subject to weather conditions. So keep your plan B in place.

You can also book a helicopter all the way from Dehradun as well. The cost for visiting just Kedarnath would be around ₹70,000 while if you add a visit to Badrinath, the cost would increase to around 1,25,000 per person. You will need to book via one of the private operators and there is no regulation on price control on this route yet.

Yatra Registration for Kedarnath

After the flash floods of 2013, the local authorities have put in place a yatra registration system to keep the visitors to the Kedarnath Dham in check. Every person needs to register beforehand online before starting their journey.

If you are trekking your way to Kedarnath, you will need to show your yatra e-pass. Make sure you have it before you reach. In case you cannot, you can look for someone in the area who can do it for you at a cost (usually charge ₹50 but you can never say about the peak season).

You will definitely need this e-pass and registration to book a helicopter ticket online. As of 2022, you also need to upload your Covid-19 certificate while registering.

Register on the official website: https://registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in/signin.php

Where to stay during Kedarnath travel

In guptakashi or sonaprayag.

You will probably need to spend a night or two in Guptakashi or Sonaprayag (if you are hiking) since this will be your base for your Kedarnath trip. No matter what transportation option you take, you will have to start and end at GuptaKashi.

You will find all kinds of hotels in Guptakashi – from budget to mid-range. But you probably won’t find super-luxurious ones in the area. While the price range of the hotels is comparable to other hill stations during regular months, the prices of the same rooms skyrocket during the peak season. So much so that we found some super-basic rooms (with no heating/geyser) for ₹ 3000 a night.

The hotels at Sonaprayag are quite basic but it is best to stay there if you are planning to start your trek the next morning.

Head over to Makymytip.com or Booking.com to find the best hotel options here.

During Trek

You will be able to find some accommodation in Gaurikund at the base of the trek. Expect them to be basic, but if you wish to be rested before or after your trek, they will do the job.

The next place where you will find accommodations is Linchauli (approx 6km before Kedarnath). If you are dead tired (or unwell), you can consider staying here. You can find GMVN guesthouses in Linchauli, Gaurikund and Sonaprayag. Other than that you may have to have to rely on yourself to find guesthouses as you go.

In Kedarnath

The last stop on the trek where you will find good accommodation is at Kedarnath Base Camp. This is 500m before the Kedarnath shrine. It is where you will find better places to stay. GMVN guest houses and cottages are popular options.

If you are travelling during the lean months, you may be able to find an empty room. But don’t count on it. It is always best to book one ahead of time. You can do this by calling a local agent at Guptakashi or book them on their official website .

Travelling to Kedarnath Dham

Reaching the top.

If you are trekking to Kedarnath, then you need to start your journey as early in the morning as possible. Aim to reach the base of the trail by 6 am so that you can comfortably reach the top by afternoon. Try not to start after 8 am, unless you plan to stay on the way for the night. You do not want to be on the trail after dark.

If you are travelling by helicopter, you need to reach their base at least 2 hours before the allotted time. Read your ticket instructions and follow them. The helicopter companies often overbook these helicopters and are happy to cancel your trip if you arrive anytime late. Some companies are more punctual than others. But you do not want to come so far and return.

You may have to wait a couple of hours before your turn. The helicopter ride is around 8mins from the base helipad and drops you at the top. From there you still need to walk around 500m – 1km to reach the Kedarnath shrine.

Helipad at Kedarnath

At Kedarnath

Once at Kedarnath, you can follow the signs in the area that will guide you towards the main shrine. If you are too old or not physically fit enough to walk this distance on your own, you can still hire a pitthu at the top. A slight lack of oxygen can get some people uncomfortable.

Try to join the line to the shrine as soon as you reach there. There is almost no control over the crowd at the shrine, so it can take several hours for your turn for the darshan. Several pilgrims return without even the darshan to catch their turn on the helicopter ride back before it closes.

The rush at the shrine is at its peak during the day. If you want to guarantee darshan, try and stay the night there. The rush decreases after 5 pm once the helicopter services stop for the day. It is also a divine experience to catch the aarti at night or early morning the next day.

Even if you do miss the main darshan, take some solace in the beautiful view. There is a statue of Adi Shankaracharya behind the main shrine. It is where he himself attained samadhi and is believed to be present in spirit. You should also find the magnanimous Bheemshila, the big rock that appeared during the 2013 floods and saved the shrine from damage. It is considered a holy miracle. Although there is no scarcity of miracles in this holy hand.

Pilgrims at Kedarnath

You will find a few locals who can get you to enter the shrine for darshan via VIP/other routes. I don’t really know how it works, but it is possible. They do charge around ₹1100 per person for entry. But it is not always available.

Similarly, you can also opt for VIP entries on some days by paying around ₹2100. This shortens your waiting time by a lot, but these days the queues still tend to be long. VIP entry is not available when a VIP is around. So if you are travelling at the start or end of the season, these are usually occupied.

Returning from the top

If you are returning from the top, again try to start as early as possible. The way back is also long and treacherous but it will take you a little less to climb down. Definitely don’t descend after dark.

If you are returning by helicopter, you need to reach the helipad to register yourself. It may take between 1-2 hours before your turn to fly back and you can check out the surrounding areas during that time.

What to pack for the journey

Do not pack lightly for this journey. Take out the big guns and pack for the worst-case scenario. Although the temperature ranges, it is usually extremely cold at the top in Kedarnath. Pack for sub-zero temperatures, except maybe if you are travelling between July – August when it is slightly less cold.

The temperature drops suddenly after sunset. So pack if you need to spend the night at Kedarnath camp in case of any unforeseen circumstances. If you plan to trek, pack in layers so if its gets hot during mid-day, you can take your jackets off and trek with ease.

During the monsoons, not only pack a good rain jacket but a change of clothes since you do not want to keep wet in cold. Take warm shoes and thick socks with you.

You should be able to find food and basic amenities at the top, but you will not be able to find any store, everyday items or even cash on the way. So take cash with you.

Issues to Keep Note

As I said at the start of this post, I have mixed feelings about my journey. And while I do not want to scare you with my (personal) views, I think you should keep some points in mind.

1. Keep in mind that the number of pilgrims taking on this journey is a LOT. So expect the place to be crowded, everywhere! The hotels are booked, and the transportation – ponies, and helicopters are overbooked. The queues are long and facilities are limited. So if you are travelling with the elderly and children, be ready to compensate for discomfort with money.

2. On the ecological direction, the floods of 2013 are said to be the result of overpopulation, overdevelopment and overtourism. And while, the local authorities had tried to keep this in check in the later years, as of 2022 there are almost no control and no restrictions on activities. We will be back to square one soon.

3. The 7 Helicopter companies that operate the helicopters in this region often don’t follow regulations and safety standards as they should. The result was the helicopter crash in October’22. And you will not be surprised. The helicopters are booked 2-5 times their normal capacity. This means fewer rest times for both helicopters and pilots. Negligence is rampant. Some operators fare better than others, but no one guarantees a safe return.

4. All facilities on this route are extremely overpriced, especially during the peak season. I probably spent as much as I would spend on a week-long holiday abroad with no geyser hotels and rude drivers. If you are looking for a holiday, this is not the place. If you are looking as a pilgrim, accept it as it comes.

5. Only emergency and basic medical facilities are available in the area. So take as much precaution with the elderly and children. Keep your medicines with you and do not expect them to find here. In case of any emergency, you may need to be transferred using the helicopter that you will need to be self-funded.

The views of majestic Himalayan peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag from the top are breathtaking. However, trekking in the cold climate of winter requires proper preparation, planning, and packing. Having the right clothing, gear, footwear, accessories and other essentials is key to having a safe and comfortable trekking experience.

So whether you are an experienced mountaineer or a newbie going on your first Himalayan trek, use this guide to make sure you pack wisely and prepare thoroughly before embarking on the thrilling winter trek to Kedarkantha Peak! To fully enjoy this moderately difficult trek, proper planning and packing are crucial.

Things To Carry For Kedarkantha Trek: A Complete Guide

30 Important Things To Carry For Kedarkantha Trek - A Complete Guide

1. Valid ID Proof

Carrying an original and valid photo identity proof is mandatory for any trek in India. This is needed at checkposts and campsites. Recommended ID proofs are an Aadhar Card, Driving License, Voter ID, or Passport. Avoid carrying originals and keep 2-3 photocopies instead. If you are a foreign national, carry your passport and valid Indian visa. Keep your ID proof safe and secured during the trek.

2. Good Quality Backpack

Your backpack is the most essential piece of trekking gear. Go for a branded backpack with a capacity of 60-70 liters. It should have a good hip belt to transfer weight to the hips, adjustable straps, a ventilated back panel, and an expandable collar.

The material should be durable like nylon or polyester with a waterproof rain cover. Waterproof the bag with ponchos or plastic wraps as porters sometimes stack bags carelessly. Go on short hikes wearing the loaded pack to test comfort. Alternatively, rent good backpacks from trek gear rental companies.

3. Trekking Shoes

Ideal trekking shoes are waterproof, have good grip, provide ankle support, and have a sturdy build. The outsole should be from reputed brands like Vibram with deep lugs for traction on slippery terrain.

High ankle collars add support and prevent debris from getting inside. Break in new shoes by wearing them around before the trek. If you don’t want to buy expensive shoes, renting is a good option. Make sure the shoes are still in good condition, fits well, and are comfortable.

➛ Trekking Shoes For Rent (Waterproof)

4. Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are very useful in the mountains as they improve stability, reduce strain on the knees, and help propel you forward. Adjustable aluminum trekking poles are lightweight and offer versatility for uphill and downhill sections. They distribute the load by up to 25% from the knees to the shoulders and arms.

Look for comfort grips, adjustable wrist straps, anti-shock features, and interchangeable tips. Learn the correct techniques to maximize efficiency. Renting poles is suggested for infrequent trekkers. Make sure the poles are not damaged, are of proper height, and have good grips.

5. Headlamp

A headlamp frees up your hands at camp for cooking, changing clothes, etc. in the dark. Look for one with different lighting modes, brightness settings that go beyond 100 lumens, and a red light mode that preserves night vision.

It should have an adjustable band to fit perfectly on your head. Always carry spare batteries since cold can drain them faster. A headlamp also comes in handy if you get caught in the dark during summit attempts. Consider renting a headlamp if you won’t use it much otherwise.

➛ Best Rechargeable Head Torch For Rent

6. Sunglasses

Sunglasses are mandatory for eye protection in the snowy environment at high altitudes. Go for wrap-around polarized glasses from reputed outdoor brands that cut glare from sun, snow, and water. UV-protected lenses with a 100% UV 400 rating offer complete protection.

If you wear prescription glasses, you can get custom sunglass inserts for your frames. Make sure the sunglasses fit over your prescription glasses comfortably without slipping. Carry a neck cord to prevent loss and a hard case for protection. Avoid cheap low-quality sunglasses that can harm your eyes.

7. First Aid Kit

A first aid kit can be a lifesaver in the mountains. Stock it with essential medications, bandages, antiseptic creams, pain relief sprays & gels, cotton, gauze, medical tape, blister care supplies, scissors, hand sanitizer, disposable gloves etc. Also, include any personal medications.

Make sure all the medications are unexpired. The kit should be portable, waterproof, and readily accessible. Know how to use each component. You can customize readymade kits available from outdoor retailers. Renting a first aid kit makes sense if you are new to trekking. Just replenish any item you use during the trek.

8. Raincoat and Pants

A good quality waterproof and breathable rain jacket and pant is vital for protection from rain, wind, and snow. It should have taped or sealed seams to prevent leakage along with hoods, storm flaps, and adjustable hems. 2-3 layer jackets with ventilation options are ideal.

Get ones that pack small and are lightweight. Choose bright colors for visibility. Make sure they are roomy enough to layer clothes underneath. Cheap plastic ponchos are not ideal. You can rent good rain gear from outdoor gear rental companies before the trek. Check for defects in zippers, tears, etc before renting.

➛ Best Waterproof Rain Coat For Rent

9. Backpack Rain Cover

If your backpack does not come with an inbuilt rain cover, get a removable one. It should be made from a waterproof material and fit snugly over the pack without sagging. Make sure you get the right size rain cover for your backpack.

Attach it properly over all the extremities of the pack. Seam-sealed designs prevent leakage. Having this extra layer of waterproofing gives added protection for your belongings inside. You can easily rent a rain cover along with your backpack from any gear rental company.

10. Day Pack

You need a hardy but compact 15-20 liter day pack to carry your essentials during summit attempts, day hikes, and as a summit bag. It should have side pouches for quick access to water bottles, front stash pockets to quickly access snacks or layers, and chest/waist straps for stability.

Look for an air mesh back panel for ventilation and minimal weight. Keep it light by packing only necessities like water, snacks, spare layer, first aid, phone, etc. inside. Hydration-compatible day packs allow the use of hydration bladders or water bottles. These are easily available for rent if you don’t want to buy one.

11. Trekking Gaiters

Gaiters are worn over trekking shoes to prevent debris like pebbles, gravel, snow, and dust from getting inside. They also keep the pants from getting caught in the lugs. Look for durable, water-resistant ones with secure closures.

Make sure they are high enough to fit over your shoes and socks without sagging. The bottom should be reinforced and have a sturdy front clip. Try wearing your gaiters before renting to assess sizing and comfort. Examine for any damage or wear and tear if renting used gaiters.

12. Camping Slippers

Camping slippers are a nice luxury that makes hanging time at camp comfortable. They should be lightweight, pack down small, quick-drying, and have a rugged sole with tread for grip.

Closed-toe designs prevent stubbing the toes on rocks. Make sure they are not too tight or loose when trying out before renting. Wear with fresh socks to relax your feet after long trekking days. They can be easily rinsed and dried overnight for reuse.

13. Sun Cap

A wide-brimmed sun cap protects your face, ears, neck, and head from harsh UV rays at high altitudes. Choose one with UPF rating and chin straps or drawcord to prevent it from being blown away by the wind. Mesh side panels allow ventilation and sweat evaporation.

Go for a cap made from quick-dry, breathable fabric. Make sure it fits you well without being too tight or loose when renting. Adjust the chin strap for a snug fit. Wear a cap over a woolen beanie for layered protection. Renting caps is ideal if you won’t use them much afterward.

➛ Best Trekking Hat On Rent (Summer Cap)

14. Balaclava

A balaclava protects the head, neck, and face from cold winds, sunburn, and frostbite. Merino wool balaclavas are excellent as wool insulates even when wet. Choose one that fits snugly and covers all exposed areas fully.

It should have some stretch to pull down easily over the head when required. Make sure there are no gaps around the nose or eyes when trying one for renting. Carry a spare balaclava in case the one in use gets wet. You can also opt for a multifunctional buff instead of a balaclava.

➛ Best Merino Wool Balaclava On Rent

15. Thermal Innerwear

Woolen or synthetic thermal inners trap body heat and wick away sweat to keep you warm and dry. They are meant to be worn next to the skin under other layers. Avoid cotton which soaks up sweat.

For the top, choose long sleeves and a close-neck design. The bottom should be full-length ankle-length leggings. Try on the thermals with your other layers before renting to assess sizing and layering comfort. Look for any defects in stitching or pilling in the fabric.

16. Quick-Dry T-shirts

Quick dry synthetic t-shirts prevent sweat accumulation, odor, and chill. Branded trekking t-shirts also come with a UPF rating for sun protection. Choose light-colored full sleeves and a breathable, lightweight fabric that fits snugly.

Carry at least 2-3 t-shirts to cycle through during the length of the trek. Make sure there are no visible stains, tears, or loosening of shapes when renting used ones. Wash and sun dry overnight to sterilize before wearing.

17. Fleece Jacket

A fleece jacket traps air and provides excellent insulation and warmth for its weight. Although not waterproof, fleece dries quickly when wet. Choose a thick 200-300 gram weight fleece from Polartec or Thermolite.

It is worn over base layers and under a down or rain jacket. An unzippable jacket allows for ventilation adjustment. Ensure proper arm and body length when renting. Check for damaged zippers, collar elastics, and any pilling in the fabric.

18. Puffy Down Jacket

Warm, compressible, and lightweight, down jackets are unbeatable for insulating capacity. The feathers trap heat while allowing moisture to escape. 900+ fill power down provides maximum warmth with minimal weight.

Get duck or goose down with water-resistant DWR coating. Make sure it fits comfortably over other layers. When renting, examine for missing feathers through the outer fabric. Do a blow test for leakage and assess the loft and compressibility.

➛ Best Columbia Jacket For Winter On Rent (-16 Degree Ultra Light)

19. Waterproof Trekking Gloves

Waterproof insulated gloves provide hand protection and dexterity for activities like setting up tents, cooking, etc. They have a better grip compared to mittens. Look for breathable waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex and PrimaLoft insulation.

Ensure proper fit without constricting circulation when trying before renting. The outer shell should be abrasion-resistant. Examine the gloves inside-out for any leakage, torn insulation, or separating seams if used. Known brands are more reliable for quality.

20. Trekking Pants

Preferred over jeans, trekking pants are light, quick-drying, and abrasion-resistant. They are made from soft shell fabric or convertible designs with zip-off lower legs. Useful features are UPF rating, vent zips, durable fabric, and gusseted crotch.

They provide ease of movement over varied terrain. Try sitting, squatting & stretching when renting to assess comfort and fit. Look for any tears, holes or loose stitching in used ones. Wash and sun dry pants overnight to get rid of bad odors before use.

21. Trekking Socks

Proper trekking socks can prevent painful blisters and keep feet comfortable. Look for wool or synthetic padding around toes, heels, and ankles prone to blisters. Quick-drying, moisture-wicking liner socks worn under help too.

The socks should not be too tight or loose when worn with the trek shoes. When renting, check for holes, sagging elastic, and worn fabric along the toes and heels. Socks are best rented new rather than used ones.

22. Hydration System

A 2-3 liter capacity hydration bladder system allows you to drink water frequently without taking off your pack. The long sip tube makes reaching the nozzle easy. It carries more water than bottles.

Look for wide mouth openings for easy cleaning and anti-microbial properties to prevent mold. Make sure the bite valve, tubing, and seals are intact when renting used ones. Scrub thoroughly with chlorine tablets before use.

23. Reusable Cutlery

Carry your own reusable spoon, fork, and insulated mug. This avoids generating trash from disposable plates and cutlery on the trek.

Opt for durable, lightweight options. Metal spoons tend to develop a weird smell over time. Rent cutlery along with your camping gear or from trek gear rental companies. Make sure they are not chipped or bent.

24. Sunscreen Lotion

Generous use of SPF 30+ broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen is vital in the high UV environment of the mountains. Reapply every few hours even if not directly sunny. Zinc-based creams stay on better than lotions.

Check if you have any allergies when trying a new sunscreen. When renting, check manufacturing dates and use before the product expires. Don’t rent previously opened or used tubes. Discard any sunscreen past its shelf life.

25. Lip Balm

Intense sun and cold dry winds make lip balm essential to prevent chapped and cracked lips. Beeswax-based balms stay on better than oils or petroleum jelly. SPF protection is an added bonus.

When renting, opt for sealed new lip balm sachets. Don’t use ones that have been opened or used previously. Remember to apply the balm generously and reapply every few hours during the trek.

26. Biodegradable Toiletries

Carry travel-sized toiletries for bathing and sanitation needs like small soaps, sanitizer, sunscreen, toothpaste tablets, etc. Opt for biodegradable eco-friendly options that won’t pollute water bodies when the used waste is discharged.

Items like soaps, shampoos, and wet wipes come in handy mini packs that are just right for a short trek. When renting toiletries, ensure the products are sealed, unused, and not past expiration dates.

27. Trekking Sandals

Sturdy trekking sandals with dampening midsoles and good grip make easy camp shoes. Their quick-drying open design is perfect for stream crossings or relaxing at camp. Ankle straps add stability over rocky terrain.

Test sandals with the trek socks you will be wearing when renting to check sizing. Make sure the straps, buckles, and lugs are not worn out or damaged. Proper fit should allow some wiggle room for feet to swell on long days.

28. Camera / GoPro

Capture the stunning Himalayan landscapes with your digital camera, GoPro, or phone camera. Carry spare batteries or power banks to manage battery life. Get a dry bag or waterproof case to protect the camera from rain and falls.

When renting, check everything is in working order – batteries, memory card, lenses, etc. Examine for any physical damage like cracks or dents. Know how to operate the camera before the trek begins.

➛ Gopro Camera On Rent

29. Portable Charger

Recharge your phone, camera, GPS device, etc. anywhere with a power bank. Get one with a capacity of at least 10,000 mAh and multiple charging ports. Ensure the power bank is fully charged before renting. Check that it is functional by attaching a device and charging for a few minutes.

30. Camping Stove

A camping stove is an essential item for cooking food and boiling water during treks. Small portable stoves powered by gas cylinders offer a reliable flame even in windy conditions compared to open fires. Choose lightweight canister or liquid fuel stoves from brands like MSR, Primus, or Coleman based on fuel availability. Make sure all tubes, valves, and gaskets are intact if renting a used stove. Understand the safe usage and priming before use. Reputed outdoor gear rental companies like XDog Trekking in Bangalore offer well-maintained camping stoves for rent.

  • Check the Headlights, Break light and Parking lights of your vehicle.
  • Always give way to uphill vehicles.
  • Keep your vehicle's valid documents with you to avoid inconvenience.
  • Before journey, make sure that fuel tank of your vehicle is full; in case of landslides you might have to take alternate long routes.
  • Ensure to refuel, where ever easily you get chance, during season there might be long queues in Petrol Pumps at main stations.
  • Carry first aid box with you.
  • Do not drink and drive.
  • In case of traffic jam, park your vehicle at the end of the queue. If you initiate a parallel queue, the traffic from other side might force you to drive in reverse gear, till you reach again at end of the original queue. And you may find it very difficult to drive long in reverse gear on a hilly road.
  • Do not compete with local vehicles/drivers. They know the terrain very well.

Kedarnath & Badrinath Map

Kedarnath Dham is a town in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. It is known for its Kedarnath Temple, which attracts thousands of pilgrims worldwide every year. At approximately 86 kilometers from Rudraprayag, the district headquarters, Kedarnath mandir is one of the most remote of India's four Chota Char Dham pilgrimage sites. It is located in the Himalayas, about 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level near the Chorabari Glacier-the source of the Mandakini River.

The Kedarnath temple is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, most notably Kedarnath Mountain. The nearest road head is at Gaurikund, about 16 km away. Kedarnath yatra has been a pilgrimage center for centuries. According to the Mahabharata, the Pandava brothers built an altar for Lord Shiva at Kedarnath. However, there is no mention of  Kedarnath mandir in the Mahabharata. One of the earliest references to Kedarnath Dham occurs in the Skanda Purana (7th-8th century), which names Kedara (Kedarnath) as the place where Lord Shiva released holy waters from his matted hair, resulting in the formation of the Ganges River.

Embark on a holy sojourn of Divine Kedarnath tour packages and visit Uttarakhand's attractions. What makes Kedarnath Yatra Different?

Before the  Kedarnath yatra, trekkers are introduced to many scenic views of Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Rudraprayag. The magical confluence of Alaknanda & Bhagirathi at Devprayag and Alaknanda with Mandakini at Rudraprayag is an inner-outer experience. Beautiful temples every few kilometers stamp that yes—you are indeed in Uttarakhand!

The Kedarnath temple trek begins at Gaurikund and covers several campsites along the way. You will pass Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, and Linchauli during your journey to Kedarnath mandir. Devotees will chant and celebrate the trail as you travel through. An echo of "Har Har Mahadev" fills you with an exceptional spiritual embodiment of Kedarnath Dham.

The final reach of Kedarnath mandir is enough to overwhelm devotees with the chants of “Mahadev”. Kedarnath Temple was covered in long ribbons of marigold garlands and long happy queues of devotees, who seemed to be enjoying every moment they spent in this sacred place.

No matter which month are you selecting for your Char Dham Darshan, you are always advised to carry woolens with you as there is no consistency in the climatic condition especially night becomes cold? You are not going to find medical stores everywhere in the state so do carry your medical kit to avoid any serious trouble.

4. What are the documents needed for this pilgrimage? Valid ID proof like Aadhar Card, Driving License, Passport (mandatory for foreigners), etc. Other things that you need to carry along with you are medical kit containing that particular medicine if you have any prolonging illness, if you are covering the trekking trails then you must be equipped with trekking gears like a proper pair of shoes, comfortable dresses, etc.

5. Is the journey safe for senior citizens? Yes, it is safe for every aged person; however, it will be very difficult for the old-aged people to cover the trekking distance on foot, so they can opt for helicopter services.

This registration procedure has become compulsory after the flood incident in 2013. Also, both online and offline mode of registration is available that one can select as per their wish.

7. Is there any issue in finding accommodation there? No, there are enough hotels established in the state and the regions where you will be making your halt on the way to the pilgrimages. But, if you are visiting the sites in the peak season then you need to be pro-active in booking your hotels in advance or else you won’t find a good place to stay.
