If you are in the area stop by the air museum and have Mr. Avery Loucks give you a tour! We were blown away by all of his stories and knowledge. The museum is free but leave a donation this is how they fund the student scholarship program and the museum. We had the opportunity to see two planes that were still in use and on loaner to the museum. One was a cub and the other was a WWII replica of a German plane. The museum is located inside of one of the air hangers. The loaner planes fit inside a and they have full size parachutes suspended from the ceiling. On the outside of the museum there is a plane that you can climb in sit in the cockpit and touch. There are also engines, a fire truck, a light Beacon and a small kids plane. The entrance of the museum has a ton of articles, patches, maps and other things to look at. Stop by the museum you won't be disappointed!

29 Things to Do in Marathon, Florida

04/16/2023 by Nicole Edwards 3 Comments

This post was written by Nicole Edwards, a solo-sailing freelance writer for BMTM.

Marathon, the heart of the Florida Keys , is located halfway between Key Largo and Key West and comprises about 13 islands. The city is small enough that one can explore almost everything on a bike and is a great destination if you love the water.

I fell in love with Marathon for its friendly and inviting people; family-oriented attractions, such as its beaches, nature centers, snorkeling, and museums; beautiful waters; and laid-back atmosphere. Depending on when you visit, you’ll also likely experience one of the annual festivals , like the Pigeon Key Art Festival, the 7 Mile Bridge Run, the Battle in the Bay Dragon Boat Festival, the Seafood Festival, or the Florida Keys Celtic Festival. There’s so much to do here!

Read on for my top 29 recommendations:

Table of Contents

1. Coco Plum Beach

Marathon, florida things to do in marathon Florida

Coco Plum is a peaceful walking beach facing the Atlantic Ocean. There were only a few other people enjoying the sun and sparkling view when I visited — but lots of seashells! There are also public restrooms and picnic tables.

There is no designated swim area, but the sand shelf extends rather far out, making it easy to wade and fish. It’s also a turtle nesting beach (April through October), so be conscientious of any flagged areas!

I had a hard time finding the beach because my Apple maps brought me to the private entrance rather than the public access area. I ended up asking some nice ladies for directions and they pointed me the right way and said to keep following the road signs. Eventually I saw a sign for Coco Plum Beach marking the public access on the right. It’s about half a mile down the road from the private access area.

2. Sombrero Beach

Sombrero beach, marathon, florida things to do in marathon Florida

This wrap-around shoreline has views of Sister Creek and the Atlantic Ocean. Sombrero is a small beach but very popular, because it’s so centrally located, so it gets busy fast.

There are bathrooms, volleyball courts, picnic pavilions, a designated swim area, snorkeling, a dock, and a kayak launch. If you bring a kayak, be sure to paddle out to Gilligan’s Island (see below). ( This kayak is a little pricey, but I love it for its portability, stability, and lightness.)

3. Gilligan’s Island

Islands, Florida keys, marathon florida things to do in marathon Florida

This rocky island about a quarter mile from Sombrero Beach is only accessible by boat. While Sombrero was packed full of people, I had Gilligan’s Island (which is not on the map) all to myself, and it was so lovely, though I recommend wearing sandals , as the rocks are sharp! While I was exploring the tidal pools, I found and rescued an injured bird and brought it to the Marathon Wild Bird Center (discussed below).

4. Beach at Curry Hammock State Park

State parks, marathon, florida, Florida keys things to do in marathon Florida

This is a very long stretch of soft, sandy shoreline with wispy grass blowing in the breeze. It’s a dynamic beach, with trails through the dunes, which are bookended by a driftwood forest and a small lawn with trees and a picnic table.

There is an entrance fee to the park , which supports the preservation of the largest piece of undeveloped land between Big Pine Key and Key Largo . The park also has RV and tent camping .

5. Crane Point Museum and Nature Center

Things to do in marathon florida

The Crane Point Hammock Museum and Nature Trails nature center protects some of the last remaining thatch palm hammocks in the world (thus called because they were great for thatched roofs). The center also protects Adderley House, a traditional home where a Bahamian pioneer lived over a hundred years ago. There is also a museum, walking trails, a butterfly conservatory, a wild bird center, and geocaching ! (More on some of those below.)

If you go on the golf cart/trolley tour (included in the $15 admission fee) — which is very informative about the plants, the history of the people who lived on this land, and why the nature center exists today — you can also go inside Crane House where the Cranes lived (see below). I went on the tour and really enjoyed learning about the history and mission of the center and the plants in front of me. Plus I met several other vacationers. It was scheduled to run 90 minutes, but the tour guide went a bit over the time allotment. I also spent some time in the butterfly garden and trails before the tour so I’d plan on spending at least two hours here.

6. Butterfly Conservatory

things to do in marathon Florida

While I waited for the 11am golf cart/trolley tour to start, I explored the butterfly conservatory. Before Hurricane Irma, the meadow had over 100 species of butterflies. Most have yet to find their way back, but still, plenty of butterflies flitted across my path — just not 100 different species.

7. Nature Trail

Hiking in marathon florida things to do in marathon Florida

It was so peaceful to walk along winding narrow trails and listen to the sound of the rustling thatch palms (one of the 13 species of plants found only in the Florida Keys). Even on the tour, we got to step off the golf cart and cross several boardwalks to get to Crane Point, which overlooks Florida Bay. (Note: If you don’t know what poisonwood trees look like, keep your hands in your pockets. I still have scars from a poisonwood rash.)

8. Crane House

things to do in marathon Florida

Crane House is a beautiful piece of architecture, with water views on both sides of the raised home. It was built by the Cranes, the people who strived to protect Marathon’s last hardwood hammock. If you’re into architecture, you’ll recognize styles from the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. You can only go inside if you go on the tour.

9. Marathon Wild Bird Center

Wild bird center in marathon, Florida things to do in marathon Florida

Though a separate entity, the Wild Bird Center is only accessible by going to the Crane Point Nature Center. I was shocked to read that it had taken in 159 birds since January 1 (I was there on March 8), and there was a container full of the materials that had been extracted from the birds (fishing line, nails, plastic bags, hooks…). But the birds seemed to be doing very well as they healed from their injuries, and I felt good about handing over the injured bird I’d found. (Note: Watch out for golden orb weavers (spiders) that hang in the supports of the wire walls where the birds live.)

10. Pigeon Key Foundation

The Pigeon Key Foundation protects Pigeon Key, which played an integral role in Henry Flagler’s project of extending the railroad to Key West: it was where the workers lived. Today, you can take a trolley to the island and snorkel, go to the nature center, or just walk around. General admission is $25, or you can book a tour of the key here .

11. Turtle Hospital

The Turtle Hospital helps injured sea turtles and returns them to the wild. It is the world’s first state-certified veterinary hospital just for sea turtles. While pollution and boats cause them a lot of ailments, the most common and only global disease that affects these wild animals is fibropapilloma, a debilitating tumor. The Turtle Hospital is working with universities to figure out the cause of this disease and effective cures. You can go on an educational tour , on which you’ll get to see the hospital, visit the turtle patients, and watch an informational presentation.

12. Rent a Boat or Kayak

Kayak marathon florida things to do in marathon Florida

Marathon is a beautiful place to rent your own boat or kayak and go exploring. There are creeks and coves plus the Atlantic Ocean with marine wildlife and sandbars to visit!

If you do rent your own boat or have a kayak, I recommend checking out Sister Creek. You’ll see a bunch of sailboats tied up to the mangroves, but you can also go fishing in the calm waters (here’s a pretty cool saltwater travel rod ).

The creek winds from the Atlantic Ocean to Boot Key Harbor, taking you from the anchorage to Sombrero Beach. If you time the current right, you can paddle with the water and cast a line or birdwatch along the way. I towed a kayak upcurrent with my dinghy ( Sputterbug ) and then slowly paddled back to get a closer look at wildlife.

Tours & Excursions

If renting your own boat isn’t your thing, you can still experience Marathon’s waters on a tour or excursion.

13. Dolphin and whale watching

florida keys one-week itinerary dolphin watching eco tour things to do in marathon Florida

If you love the water and wildlife spotting, I highly recommend you get out on a boat! It never gets old to me when a dolphin comes to say hello and plays in Arta’s (my sailboat) bow wake.

Here’s where you can find a charter to spot dolphins and the endangered right whales (when they migrate here between December and March).

14. Off-shore fishing

florida keys one-week itinerary, marathon, islamorada things to do in marathon Florida

Marathon has some great off-shore fishing because of the Gulf Stream (but you’ll need a Florida saltwater fishing license ). I let a line out when I was sailing here and managed to hook this tasty Spanish mackerel. If you don’t know your fish species, you can go on a charter .

15. Snorkeling

Florida keys marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

I went to Sombrero Reef, which is right off the coast of Marathon and marked by a light tower. The water was pleasant, and the visibility was superb. The reef is a spur-and-groove structure, so I was able to swim between the rocks as if they were valleys. (I use and love this reef-friendly sunscreen .) It’s best to go on a calm day. You can find a tour here .

(Want to snorkel in Key Largo? Here are our top picks. )

16. Parasailing

Florida keys marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

Marathon is a neat place to get up in the air, because you can get a bird’s-eye view of the 7 Mile Bridge. There’s plenty of open water for coasting over, about 300 feet in the air! You can book a parasailing adventure here .

17. Sunset sail

Florida keys marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

If there’s one thing in the world I could do every day of my life, it would be watch the sun split in half and spill its light into the sea. That’s what it looks like! And I speak from experience when I say it doesn’t get much better than from a boat. Book a cruise here .

18. Eco-tour

Florida keys marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

Eco-tours will take you through the mangroves, where you can learn about the different kinds and how they contribute to the ecosystem (for instance, green mangroves expel the excess salt to certain leaves, which turn yellow and fall off). I loved being able to kayak up close to the branches and bird-watch.

19. Sandbars

There are several sandbars off the coast of Coco Plum Beach. You can kayak out from the beach or go on a tour of the Florida waters and relax at the sandbar during your trip (I always pack my belongings in a dry bag ). There’s some snorkeling nearby, or you can just float in the shallow water. Book a sandbar excursion here .

20. Helicopter tour

If you can splurge, you could go on a helicopter tour over Marathon and the surrounding keys, spotting wildlife, reefs, and the 7 Mile Bridge, and learning about the history of the Keys.

Florida keys marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

I anchored in Boot Key Harbor and got a dinghy dock pass at the Marathon City Marina, which included a complimentary bike rental! (If you don’t dock at the marina, you can rent a bike here .) I biked all around Marathon, which is only ten miles long and easily accessible on two wheels.

In fact, I recommend exploring via bike (you can always buy your own ), because the paths make traveling around more convenient than driving a car down busy US1. You can check out 7 Mile Bridge, the Turtle Hospital, the Crane Point Museum and Nature Center, the beaches, and so much more with just a bike.

22. Marathon Air Museum & Tours

The Air Museum has an informative little indoor display of old patches, artifacts, aircrafts, and parachutes, and there’s another small plane outside that you can climb inside! The museum, located at the Marathon Airport, relies on donations.

23. Keys Cable Park

As founder Matt Sexton worked to start and open the cable park at the lagoon on Grassy Key, he also initiated composting efforts and created gardens around the property and the rest of the key. This has not only helped to clean up the lagoon’s tumultuous past but also made the cable park possible! If you’ve always wanted to try a watersport but haven’t had the chance, consider going, because there’s kiteboarding and foilboarding, as well as cable reservations and lessons .

24. 7 Mile Bridge

florida keys one-week itinerary, 7-mile bridge, marathon things to do in marathon Florida

“The Old Seven,” more commonly known as the Overseas Railroad, was part of Henry Flagler’s big railway plan. At the time of its construction in the early 1900s, it was the world’s longest segmental bridge. In the 1980s, it was closed to vehicular use. Today a modern bridge, known as the 7 Mile Bridge , runs parallel.

Both bridges have a beautiful pedestrian and bike path with incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and the bay, and span between Knights Key and Little Duck Key. Though they are considered seven miles, they officially measure about 6.79.

25. Shady Palm Art Gallery and Photography

Florida keys marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

This is a neat little gallery that features works by over 50 local artists! It would be a good place to buy a Marathon souvenir, because a lot of the artwork captures the natural environment through wildlife photography and paintings.

26. San Pablo Catholic Church

Florida keys marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

While I did step foot inside the church for a few minutes to listen to the sermon, I really enjoyed the peaceful music that played in the breathtaking Prayer Garden, which includes a small lake surrounded by benches. I highly recommend passing through just to unwind.

Restaurants and Markets

27. brutus seafood market and eatery.

Florida keys food marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

The service and food was fantastic here, and not terribly pricey, given I ordered the fresh mahi mahi. I sat in a beautiful outdoor covered area, right next to the bar. There is also a fresh seafood market adjacent to the restaurant .

28. Sweet Savannah’s Bake Shop

If you have a sweet tooth, Sweet Savannah’s has some of the best and sweetest sweets around! It serves locally made ice cream and creative cupcakes, which you can enjoy in the garden.

29. Paradise Produce

Florida keys farmers market marathon Florida things to do things to do in marathon Florida

Paradise Produce has a selection of unusual fruits, like mamey and cacao! It sources its selection from Florida farms. Typical items (like bananas, mangoes, and avocados) are a bit pricey, but I enjoyed talking to the owner and buying fruit I had never tried before!

I hope this gives you an overview of the best things to do in Marathon!

Which three would be at the top of your list?

Wow, this is a great list and makes Marathon truly special. I got to be driven across the old 7 mile bridge and did not know its history related to the overseas railroad. Biking or walking across the bridge would be on top of the list followed by the museums/art galleries and the exciting nature hikes/trails and beaches. If I had a boat I would definitely take advantage of that to explore the area from the water! The turtle hospital is great. Thanks for sharing! The FL Keys have so much to offer.

The Florida Keys really do have a lot to offer! I think they would be a perfect first destination for a solo traveler. I hope you get to explore the area by water sometime in the future 🙂

In states like Florida that are hostile to women and the LGBTQ+ community, if you feel safe going, it would be helpful to donate to the local abortion fund to help womxn access health care and donate to a local LGBTQ+ community effort.

The Island of Marathon, Florida, in the Heart of the Keys

Last Updated on April 11, 2024

Marathon, Florida, in the middle of the Keys tropical isles, is surrounded by aqua-blue water and bordered to the south by coral reefs.

It has been attracting explorers since the 1820s. Despite the passage of time, today you can still experience its natural beauty, stunning seas, and a rich sense of history.

Sombrero Lighthouse.

One of Marathon’s most spectacular sights lies 3.5 nautical miles off Boot Key.

Completed in 1858, the Sombrero Key lighthouse was commissioned along with other Keys lighthouses by the U.S. government.

This was meant to help prevent the numerous shipwrecks occurring along the Florida Reef.

Today snorkelers can see the still-working lighthouse and visit the coral reef with Captain Pip’s Charter Boats. (If you come in your own boat, be sure to use a mooring buoy instead of anchoring.)

Swim with dozens of tropical fish: sergeant majors, stingrays, snapper, parrotfish, and barracuda, to name just a few.

This utterly absorbing experience is a reminder that to truly appreciate the Florida Keys, you need to leave land behind and see what awaits beneath the waves.

A lot of the other islands get all the love, but what are the best things to do in Marathon? If you haven’t even heard of this area of the Florida Keys, then you’re in luck. Let’s discover what makes this hidden gem in South Florida so great!

The city of Marathon isn’t just one island in the Florida Keys , it’s actually spread across thirteen different islands. To get across them, you have to drive across the Seven Mile Bridge, which is an adventure of its own! Most people associate vacations in the Florida Keys with beaches, and Marathon has a variety of the best in the Keys.

Marathon offers some of the best boating activities not just in the Keys, but in the entire state of Florida. You can enjoy deep-sea fishing charters, glass-bottom boat tours over coral reefs, or flats fishing. Even if you don’t want to charter your own boat, there are many tours that can take you on an adventure with little planning on your part!

When you add in the waterfront restaurants, jet-ski tours, kayaking , paddle-boarding, and diving opportunities , Marathon stops being just a place to spend “island time” in the Keys. It becomes one of the most vibrant cities in Florida you can imagine.

Let us help you plan your perfect vacation in one of the most beautiful parts of the entire state of Florida. Discover our favorite things to do in Marathon so they can become your next vacation excursions and favorite memories of the Sunshine State.

A sign shaped like a lighthouse welcomes guests to Marathon.

The Turtle Hospital

If you love animals, then you’ll love the work of the small non-profit, the Sea Turtle Hospital. One of the most heart-warming things to do in the Keys, you can take guided tours to see the rehabilitation of  sea turtles in Florida !

The Sea Turtle Hospital functions as a veterinary hospital for sick and injured sea turtles. Every day, they rescue, rehab, and release sea turtles in the Florida Keys .

On what was once the Hidden Harbor Hotel, the hospital was built. The old motel rooms function as living quarters for the staff so they can take care of the turtles 24/7.

In order to see the turtles, you must take a guided educational tour of the hospital facilities and sea turtle rehabilitation area. This provides a behind-the-scenes look at just how delicate marine life can be. At the end of the tour, guests are invited to feed the permanent residents!

Each tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and runs daily on the hour, every hour from 9 AM – 4 PM. Guests are encouraged to book their reservations in advance, as the tours are very popular. Make sure to put this on your list when doing a Florida Keys Road Trip!

Sombrero Beach

If you’re traveling with the entire family to the Florida Keys, then you’re probably looking for family-friendly beaches . Sometimes they can be hard to find. So, when you’re looking to get away from tourists, then head to Sombrero Beach, one of the best things to do in Marathon.

With soft sand and turquoise waters, the beach is mangrove-free, so expect the kids to run straight from the parking lot to the water! The only other people you’ll see here are locals on friendly weekend getaways and other savvy travelers like yourself!

Among the beach’s perks, you’ll have access to free adjacent parking! A wide, flat path will take you to the beach, along with a picnic pavilion, children’s playground, volleyball court, restrooms, and showers too! The best part? You can bring your dog, as long as they’re on a leash! Making Sombrero Beach one of the best dog beaches in Florida !

The sandy strip that makes up Sombrero Beach will be perfect for all your sunning and swimming needs. If you’re looking for low-key, hassle-free snorkeling, this is the place to do it with a gentle surf. Even better, you can fish in the shallow water during the park’s hours: 7:30 AM – dusk.

This is truly one of the Best Beaches In The Florida Keys and you must check it out!

The sandy trail leading to Sombrero Beach, one of the best things to do in Marathon.

Crane Point Nature Area

You might think that the Florida Keys are all just beaches and coral reefs, but you would be wrong. One of the best things to do in Marathon is visit the Crane Point Nature Area. Here you’ll find over 63 acres of tropical hardwood hammock!

Part-native and part-cultivated, the Crane Point Hammock is the largest tropical hammock in the Middle Keys. It was preserved from development in 1989 by the Florida Keys Land Trust. Ironically, it was also the first part of the island of Marathon to be established!

The Crane Point Nature Area boasts two different museums. First, in the Museum of Natural History of the Florida Keys, you can walk through a replica coral reef and see a 600-year-old dugout canoe among other activities. In the Children’s Museum, your little ones will love the outdoor exhibits where they can explore the deck of a pirate ship or a Native American village.

Outdoor types will love the many different interpretive trails that wind through the dense tropical hammock. The Palm Trail, one of the best hiking trails , takes you through a Florida thatch palm hammock with strange plants like the autograph tree and joewood!

A train sits in the Crane Point Nature Area as part of the museum.

Big Pine Key

Big Pine Key, while technically not a part of the city, is only a hop, a jump, a skip from Marathon. Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key is one of the  most beautiful places in the Key s . Perfect for anybody that wants a relaxing day at the beach, a visit to Big Pine Key is one of the best things to do in Marathon.

Visitors to the park experience breathtaking views of what makes Florida the Sunshine State. Palm-lined shores are lapped up by gin-clear waters. Balmy breezes will keep you warm year-round in this South Florida State Park.

Explore the world just underneath the waters of Bahia Honda on a self-guided  snorkeling  tour. Among the seagrass beds and rocky bottoms, you’ll catch a glimpse of spiny lobster, starfish, and queen conch poking their heads out to say hello.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing to do at Bahia Honda is star gaze. Once the sun sets on the turquoise waters, stars fill the night sky and the beaches become a magical wonderland. Walk the  Old Bahia Honda Bridge  and  gaze up at the constellations , or just lie back in a beach chair and let the majesty wash over you.

Bahia Honda stands in Big Pine Key, one of the best things to do in Marathon.

Dolphin Research Center

For an outing that’s equally parts educational and magical, visit the Dolphin Research Center. One of the best things to do in Marathon, here you can see dolphins up close and personal in the natural lagoons of Grassey Key. Make sure to bring the kids along for this one!

The Dolphin Research Center’s mission states they promote peaceful coexistence, cooperation, and communication between marine mammals, humans, and the environment. The dolphins and sea lions come to the center as rescues or because they are unable to survive on their own in the wild.

Every half hour, you can take a visit to different lagoons to observe narrated behavior sessions. The dolphins showcase their amazing abilities in incredible ways. You might see them taking part in a research study or learning new behaviors. In between sessions, as you sit in the shaded areas, the dolphins will watch from the lagoons and try to catch your attention!

When you’re not getting up close and personal with the dolphins you can visit the sea lions or the bird aviary. The kids can run and cool down at the Sprayground while activating recordings of dolphins, manatee, and whale sounds. Then after a long day, grab a meal or some ice cream at Anchor’s Cafe!

A rescued dolphin swims in the lagoon of the Dolphin Research Center.

Marathon Marine Park

An aquarium and conservation center, a visit to the Marathon Marine Park is one of the best things to do in Marathon Key. Their mission is to teach about ocean and its majestic creatures through close, or even one-on-one interaction.

Through many aquatic exhibits, you can take a free-guided audio tour. Tours led by a Marine Biologist are still given, but in light of the circumstances, they are limited to no more than 10 people.

Marathon Marine Park also features four different touch tanks: Tide Pool, Nursery, Stingray Cove, and Giant Isopod! Here you can see and gently touch different aquatic species. Just remember to keep them underwater!

While not included in your admission, consider taking an exclusive encounter! You can get up close and personal with baby stingrays, entire coral reef ecosystems, and even big sharks! Marine biologists on site will teach you about the majestic creatures as you interact with them.

Trees shade the striped awnings of the Marathon Marine Park, one of the best things to do in Marathon.

Pigeon Key is a tiny island off of the Seven Mile Bridge, inevitable on your  road trip from Miami to Key West . Why not bring some gear and stop off to experience the best snorkeling in Florida at Pigeon Key? Accessible only from the city, Pigeon Key is one of the best things to do in Marathon!

Because most of the area is privately owned and visitors are not welcome, snorkeling in Pigeon Key is operated by the Pigeon Key Foundation and Marine Science Center. Admission is $12 for adults and $9 for kids 5-13.

Once you get there, you’ll be taken to Pigeon Key from Marathon by speedboat. A tour will take you through 11 historic buildings, which housed Henry Flagler’s workers who built the Seven Mile Bridge.

Now you’re free to hit the water! We recommend trying the area just off the dock, near the beach, and around the opening of Pigeon Key’s saltwater pool. Be careful, the currents around the island might be swift.

Keep in mind, snorkeling gear is not provided. You must bring your own dive flag as well! If you plan on snorkeling, you must fill out a snorkel liability release form, available at the Visitor Center.

This is one of the best and most iconic stops on the famous Florida Overseas Highway!

An aerial shot of Pigeon Key.

Grab a Slice of Key Lime Pie

There’s nothing that screams “Florida Keys” than setting your watch to “island time” and indulging at some of the best restaurants in the Florida Keys . While the lime trees are most prominent in Key West , they make their way up to Marathon to be turned into a Florida Keys delicacy.

Just imagine spending the day soaking up the sun while floating in the ocean and then having the most amazing slice of chilled Key Lime Pie! Sounds fantastic, right? Key Lime Pie always seems to hit the spot because it is light, refreshing, and the perfect balance between sweet and tart.

For the best Key Lime Pie in Marathon, you’re going to want to check out Sweet Savannah’s Bakery of the Florida Keys! A quaint shop that sells plenty of other sweets and some of the best salt scrubs around, Sweet Savannah’s won’t let you down. We recommend taking home an entire pie!

For a variation on the classic, check out the Keys Fishery. A chill spot for conch fritters and other Keys specialties, here you can try Key Lime Pie with a twist. The Keys Fishery serves up a delectable Raspberry Key Lime Pie that is just as refreshing as the original and totally out of this world!

Don’t forget to check out some of the best restaurants in Marathon Key!

a delicious piece of Key Lime Pie rests on a plate with whipped cream.

Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail

Sure, you can drive the Seven Mile Bridge on a  road trip , but there’s a different way to experience the Florida Keys. One of the best things to do in the Keys is to take it all in from the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail.

Many existing pathways and bridges from the remains of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway make up the trail. Currently, it features 90 linear miles of transportation corridor, soon to be 106 miles in total spanning from Key West to Key Largo.

The inspiration for the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail parallels Highway 1 in California. The FKOHT today aspires to be a National Scenic Highway and All-American Road.

Pedestrian and bicycle-friendly, here you can go hiking, running, bicycling, skating, sightseeing, fishing, and paddling. Always check the weather and fishing pier closures before heading out. Conditions on the bridges may be treacherous.

From the trail, you can access many points of interest like  Everglades National Park , Biscayne National Park, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and more! You also have access to 10  Florida State Parks  as well as  private campsites .

The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail sits over blue-green waters.

Take a Sunset Sail

The absolute best way to enjoy the beauty of the Florida Keys is to take a sunset sail. We truly recommend the Marathon Mermaid Sunset Sail for a a full experience complete with adventure, relaxation, and beautiful sights! It’s one of the best things to do in Marathon!

If you think that sunsets in the Keys are beautiful on the islands themselves, then you haven’t seen them the way they’re supposed to be seen: on the water! With the sun glittering and throwing orange and pink lights on the waves around you, you can’t help but feel at peace. While you sail, you’ll enjoy champagne and music while seeing sights like the iconic 7 Mile Bridge.

If you want a little more adventure, then join the Mermaid Marathon on a snorkel reef adventure! You can head to Sombrero Key Light Reef, a perfect destination for snorkeling ! A beautiful ecosystem, the reef is fully protected so you can experience its natural beauty. Look only though, don’t touch! When you get back on the boat, you’ll be treated to fresh fruits and vegetables!

If you’re looking for a little more relaxation, then book the Sandbar Experience. First, you’ll cruise around Marathon seeing local points of interest. Then you’ll head to a divine, shallow sandbar where you can sunbathe, splash and relax to your heart’s content.

A catamaran sails through the sunset.

Curry Hammock State Park

Curry Hammock State Park protects mangrove swamps, Rockland hammocks, and seagrass beds that are essential to the Florida Keys ecosystem.

Rent a kayak or paddle board and take your choice between two trails on Little Crawl Key. You’ll paddle your way through a mangrove tunnel, deep lagoons, sandbars, and open ocean. If you look closely on the water’s bottom, you’ll see starfish, horseshoe crabs, and upside down jellyfish!

Perhaps the most exciting thing to do is kite boarding! Secure yourself to a board on the water, and let a kite pull you across the turquoise waters of the bay! If that’s a little too scary, there are always groups of kite boarders on the water. It is just as exciting to sit and watch from a safe distance!

A bird perches on the shores of Curry Hammock State Park.

Marathon Air Museum

If you’re an aviation buff, or just simply like airplanes, then you need to pay the Marathon Air Museum a visit! Run by a group of aviation enthusiasts, aircraft builders, and pilots, the air grounds and adjacent museum are a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in a new hobby!

Whether you fly, build, restore, or just like aviation, the Museum offers a lot of activities and social meetings each month for enthusiasts. While serving the aviation community, people share ideas, exchange information, encourage safety, and above all, have fun!

Inside the albeit small museum, you will find a lot of unique aviation memorabilia. There are four planes on display, each with a rich and exciting story to her time in the skies. You can also see two different engines, vintage from World War II and from the F-100!

The Air Museum also owns an FAA-approved IFR flight simulator. The Elite Flyers Program earns you 12 hours of simulation time for $300. While it is not as much fun as flying a real plane, it costs a lot less. And if you want to learn how to use the simulator or actually fly, you can join the Flight School upstairs in the hanger!

Go Snorkeling

Florida is the only place in the continental United States with a subtropical climate. Because of this, you can snorkel here all year long! Trick is, you have to go down south in the winter months. That’s why snorkeling is one of the best things to do in Marathon!

One of our favorite snorkeling destinations is Pigeon Key, a small island underneath the 7 Mile Bridge. The thing is, it’s only accessible from Marathon! Because most of the area is privately owned and visitors are not welcome, snorkeling in Pigeon Key is operated by the Pigeon Key Foundation and Marine Science Center.

Once you arrive from Marathon by speedboat, a tour will take you through 11 historic buildings, all owned by Henry Flagler. Now you’re free to hit the water! We recommend trying the area just off the dock, near the beach, and around the opening of Pigeon Key’s saltwater pool. Be careful, the currents around the island might be swift.

Two swimmers snorkel in Marathon in the Florida Keys.

Take a Fishing Tour

The  Fishing Charter With Experienced Captain  is a perfect opportunity for anyone wanting a stress-free fishing experience. You won’t have to worry about finding the best fishing locations, navigating the waters, or having your own gear!

The Fishing Charter takes you out about 18 miles offshore on a 50′ boat. The captain has over 30 years of local experience which provides you with the best chances of making a big catch! The charter is approximately 4 hours in length, accommodates up to 6 anglers, and includes bottled water.

The fishing charter is one of the Key West tours that fall into the luxury price range but is justified by the captain’s experience and safety-first mindset. You should definitely check this one out if you want the ultimate fishing trip and one of the b est tours in the Florida Keys !

If you love Marathon, make sure to check out some of our other favorite things to do in the Middle Keys!
