Its hard to believe that 4 decades have passed since Mary Coughlan went into the studio to record her debut album ‘Tired and Emotional’ . That album led to appearances on The Late Late Show , a hit single with ‘Delaney’s Gone Back On The Wine’ , and led to Mary establishing her position as the First Lady of Jazz and Blues in Ireland. Heavily inspired by Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith she also embraces rock, folk, and chanson (Edith Piaf) influences in her work. Don’t miss this opportunity to join this iconic singer in celebrating 40 years of the most uncompromising, wholly personal, and universal music by any Irish artist.

Uncut – “ Mary is a living link between Billie Holliday and Amy Winehouse. ” Blues in the South – "A wonderful example of a jazz-based album. Sometimes called a new Billie Holliday, but she is better than that. She turns her stunning voice to anything, not a duff track here." Audiofileman.com – "This new album is beautifully mastered & bathes in a delicate wash of space & air that tracks reverb from the vocal all the way down to cymbal taps. Coughlan has a voice chiselled by years of experiences & she’s now telling her story. Her lyrics are delivered with great weight and a knowledge of what goes on out there." Get Ready To Rock – " 'Life Stories’ is a reaffirmation of what fans already know is a special talent. ****" Blues Blues.co.uk – “Life Stories is storytelling at its best and she makes you believe that you are listening to her life stories”. Rhthym & Booze – "Coughlin delivers a stirring, compelling and brutally honest album full of addictive highs and heart-wrenching lows." Music Republic – 5/5***** “One listen to her stunning new album & it’d be obvious to a deaf man that her effortless vocal ability is a rare gift & she can more than back up the accolades & reward the adulation . " Musicriot.com – 5/5*****“ “ Life Stories ” is one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. It’s a journey from pessimism to optimism with occasional flashbacks and doesn’t ignore the fact that even the most horrific journeys can have their humorous twists and turns. It’s a fine set of musicians creating settings that make these twelve diamonds sparkle." Velvet Thunder – “To hear her sing is truly to be at the core of the human heart”.

Mary Coughlan is arguably the greatest female singer to have emerged from Ireland in recent times, the equivalent of Irish vocal royalty. The word ‘legend’ is not one to be used lightly, but in this case is entirely appropriate. Whether into folk, blues or jazz, no one can fail to be moved by the emotional depth, expression & power in her voice, forged from an extraordinary life.

As The Observer rightly said, “Mary Coughlan’s talent is awesome. Resonant with the grief of Billie Holiday, the soul of Van Morrison and the defiance of Edith Piaf, to hear Mary sing is to be at the core of the human heart.”

Mary Coughlan has been coming to Christchurch for 20 years, playing to sold out audiences. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear songs from her latest albums live on stage.

Mary Coughlan’s extraordinary musical career spans over four decades. Often hailed as Ireland’s greatest female vocalist, she stands shoulder to shoulder with iconic jazz legends.

Her unique style blends smoky, whiskey-soaked vocals with the sharp wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. Coughlan’s music channels the raw blues of Bessie Smith and the bittersweet defiance of Edith Piaf, all delivered in her distinctive Irish drawl. Her songs are unflinchingly honest, exploring the complexities of love and relationships with a depth and universality that resonates deeply.

From her debut album, “Tired and Emotional,” to her latest work, Coughlan’s musical journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Don’t miss this chance to celebrate 40 years of music with this iconic artist.

Mary Coughlan - 40th Anniversary Tour

Town Hall Theatre

 Mary Coughlan 40th Anniversary Tour

Mary Coughlan is one of Ireland’s greatest-ever jazz and blues artists and is often spoken about in the same breath as singers like Peggy Lee and Billie Holliday.

A prolific artist by anyone’s standards, Coughlan is celebrating 40 years in music this year with a nationwide tour (details below) and new music to be released throughout 2024 – the first of which is ‘More Like Brigid’, an homage to the original Goddess of Imbolc herself, Brigid of Kildare.

Brigid was a pagan and a healer before she was canonized by the Catholic Church. As displayed in the writings of Cogitosus, a monk of Kildare who wrote the oldest extant vita of Saint Brigid, Vita Sanctae Brigidae, around 650 BC, “Bridid’s power expanded beyond the physical realm into the spiritual one, demonstrated by her ability to perform miracles.” There are over thirty miracles mentioned in the scripture, but a few particularly stand out, not least her ability to turn water into ale and the instance in which she “performed an abortion for a woman who had taken a vow of virginity, but ‘lapsed through weakness into youthful concupiscence.’ … the record of the miracle notes the fetus in the woman’s womb simply, painlessly disappeared… While her miracles did not appear to cause a stir while she was alive, after her death and sainthoodthey became an issue for the church. As well as her miracles, the fact that a woman held so much power over men within the institution made her a target for the papacy.”

Mary Coughlan says of her inspiration for writing this song: “Brigid was fierce and courageous and always went against the norm. She had a monastery and it was for men and women! I have been called ‘hysterical’ and ‘hormonal’ over the years by various industry figures for being so indignant as to ask to be paid for my work, things like that… So, needless to say, my homage to Brigid has given me a chance to air some of those frustrations that are so often experienced by women.”

The artwork for ‘More Like Brigid’ is an image of a portrait of Coughlan that was painted by the multidisciplinary artist Eilis De Faoite and subsequently projected on St Brigid’s Cathedral, Kildare and Galway City Museum over the St Brigid’s Weekend festival illuminations in 2021.

Mary Coughlan is one of our greatest singers because over 40 years she has made the most grown-up, uncompromising, wholly personal yet utterly universal music on either side of the Atlantic about what goes on between men and women.

It's hard to believe that four decades have passed since Coughlan went into the studio to record her debut album, Tired and Emotional.

Mary Coughlan

Renowned Irish singer Mary Coughlan has announced details of a 40th Anniversary tour, which concludes with a night in 3Olympia Theatre on Sunday 1st December 2024.

Tickets priced from €41.50 including booking fee & €1.50 restoration levy on sale now via Ticketmaster Ireland .

Mary Coughlan’s career in music has been one hell-of-a-ride. Often described as the greatest female vocalist that Ireland has ever produced, Coughlan proudly stands alongside some of the world’s most iconic jazz singers. She is unique in blending whisky-blurred, smoke-seared, husky notes with the laconic wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. She draws the line of deep, down and dirty blues singers back to Bessie Smith with the sardonic, bitter-sweet defiance and despair of Edith Piaf. Yet Mary Coughlan delivers it all in a delicious and unapologetic Irish drawl: sceptical, rueful, mournful and melting and ardent for love.

Don’t miss this opportunity to join this iconic artist in celebrating 40 years in music.

The fees for this event include a €1.50 restoration levy.

The restoration levy will allow 3Olympia Theatre to invest in maintaining and enhancing the theatre to ensure that it continues to consistently deliver the highest quality experience for theatre goers, actors, performers & producers.

Under 14's must be accompanied by an adult.

Over 18's ID required to gain access to the bars where alcohol is served.
