Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Look & Feel
- Wrapper Hue: Moka
- Rolling Consistency: Mostly Straight
- Spring: Firm
- Aromas: Tonka Bean, salted Caramel, Cinnamon
First of all, we’re looking at a very smooth roll overall. However, you may detect a couple of soft spots underneath the wrapper. It’s a little bit on the soft side, but that being said, unlike the Connecticut, it does have a box-pressed finish. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for them to be a little softer than usual.
The hue is a mild mocha colour. Although a little dark, it’s a far cry from the maduro that we’ll be reviewing soon. Furthermore, it gives off the light with a slight reflection but it’s not overly oily.
In terms of veins, it’s quite refined and they aren’t particularly rustic in appearance. As for the aromas on the foot and body, it consists of salted caramel, some tonka bean, and cinnamon.
Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Review
As with almost all of our reviews, the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown has been stored using a Boveda acrylic humidor for three weeks. This step ensures that it has been properly acclimated and reviewed in the same conditions as other cigars. Humidity was maintained with Boveda 69% packs and closely monitored with a Boveda Butler .
Pre-Lighting Experience
- Draw: Ideal Resistance
- Aromas: Labdanum, Ambergris, Salted Caramel
The draw is ideal and gives just the right level of resistance despite being a little bit soft on the spring. Furthermore, the flavours are quite rich. It delivers a pleasant bouquet that’s much milder than the Connecticut , which is quite surprising.
In this case, there were hints of labdanum, a vegetal musk, ambergris, a leathery musk, and a hint of salted caramel that leaves a mild residue on the lips.
1st Third Smoking Experience
- Notes: Rosewood, Nutmeg, Yuzu
Halfway through the first third and the 20th anniversary Sun Grown is quite impressive. Unlike the Connecticut blend, the Sun Grown is complex and nuanced.
It is dominated by overt rosewood, much like the Connecticut blend itself. However, it’s not spicy and only gives of aromas of rich and succulent nutmeg. There’s also an element of citrus. However, it’s not zesty but is reminiscent of yuzu paste.
You may have a few minor burn issues. Indeed, one side had a tendency to burn at a faster rate than the other.
2nd Third Smoking Experience
- Notes: Coffee Grounds, Agarwood, Oak
The second third starts as quite woody but also delivers a growingly gourmand element throughout. It’s dominated by oak but agarwood oud produces a leathery and resinous bouquet. There’s also a distinctive hint of coffee grounds in the retrohale.
Furthermore, the second third is somewhat dry and requires a beverage to whet your whistle as you smoke it.
Final Third Smoking Experience
- Notes: Oak, Coffee Grounds, Black Pepper
Unfortunately, the burn issues don’t correct themselves quite as much as you’d hope. Therefore, the cigar may require touching up. Meanwhile, the oak and coffee notes experienced in the previous third have persisted all the way to the nub.
Nevertheless, the agarwood has left and instead, the cigar has a potent black pepper note that is quite present on the retrohale.
Overall, the cigar is complex with a velvety mouthfeel that leaves a slight residue on the palate. However, the astringence is on the dry side. Therefore, you’ll need a drink to accompany it. Despite this issue, the cigar is relatively balanced.
In terms of life-cycle, the cigar has a discernable evolution throughout each third even if the second and third were somewhat similar. Similarly, the finish is quite lingering and you may want a palate cleanser, at least to subside your dry mouth!
Finally, the residual scent leaves a pleasant woodiness in the room.
Overall Burn
- Ash Backbone: Flaky
- Burn Angle: Wavy
- Temperature: Cool
- Draw: Ideal Resistance
- Final Smoking Time: 95 Minutes
As mentioned above, there were a number of burning issues throughout the smoking experience. Despite these, the draw remains consistent and provides just the right level of resistance. Similarly, the smoke remains cool.
However, the ash is somewhat flaky and tends to plop off quite easily.
Although I’m quite fond of the band and find it stylish, it’s quite large. It would have perhaps been better if the single band was separated into two that could have been removed independently as you progress down the cigar.
Some might feel that the band is a little bit too ostentatious. However, I think it’s still quite tasteful in this colour compared to the Connecticut blend’s somewhat gaudy gold. When it comes to the box, the cigars are presented in a 5-cigar presentation box. Indeed, it would be ideal for a special occasion like a bachelor party .
Each cigar is individually packaged in cardboard boxes, which is both stylish and ornate. The RRP of the cigar is around $9.25. However, purchasing the larger 24-count box will bring their individual price down.
Although great for special occasions, the Sun Grown may be challenging for inexperienced smokers. Nevertheless, it can be enjoyed casually or, given its red colour, a great one to consider for Christmas parties .
Perdomo 20th Anniversary Connecticut Pairings
Given that the Sun Grown is a gourmand cigar, consider pairing it with dark chocolate. Otherwise, carpaccio di manzo, or beef carpaccio, would be a great choice if well-cured. Alternatively, consider walnuts, that will offer a harmonious pairing;
As for beverages, we’d first suggest cognac, such as Hine’s Rare V.S.O.P. Otherwise, our guide to the best cognac will offer more suggestions. If you prefer something non-alcoholic, a well-roasted and concentrated ristretto would be ideal.
Finally, wine lovers ought to consider a pinot noir. Nevertheless, avoid wines of this grape from Bourgogne (Burgundy) as they’ll be too high in acidity. Consider options from California or Oregon instead.
Closing Thoughts
With deep and balanced harmonious notes, the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown is a very pleasant cigar to enjoy in the evening . However, some may be quite tart even when well-stored. Therefore, consider pairing it with a drink!
"Rich and gourmand in flavour, the Perdomo Sun Grown is a great choice for evening celebrations!"

Perdomo 10th Anniversary Sungrown Robusto
Back on June 17th, 2020 we welcomed Nick and Nicholas Perdomo to The Cigar Authority where we launched the Firecracker. During the After Show we got a sneak peak at the new Perdomo 10th Anniversary Sungrown and Maduro cigars as we took a look at family traditions. The cigar was teased as being available on August 4th and we joked that it wouldn’t be until later since Latin America has a stereotype of never being on time. Well, it’s time to eat those words as the cigar has landed early at 2GuysCigars.com and it’s today’s review here on The Cigar Authority.
Cigar Review: Perdomo 10th Anniversary Wrapper: Nicaragua Sun Grown Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Length: 5″ Ring Gauge: 54 Size: Robusto
The Look: Packaged in 25 count cabinet style boxes the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Sungrown is soft box pressed to perfection. The box and band feature a vibrant red color with gold and black. The cigar pops off the shelves and out of the humidor begging to be smoked. In the hand the cigar is firm to the touch with a well packed foot and a fair amount of oils visible.
The Notes: The cold draw features a well defined black cherry component that is exquisitely divine along with a touch of molasses that lingers in the background. The aroma from the foot of the cigar serves up a more molasses and a touch of manure which is considered the ultimate compliment in the tobacco industry about the quality and fermentation of the leaves. Once we toast the cigar it serves up a subtle spice.
As we move into the first third of the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Sungrown the cigar develops notes of sesame seeds with hints of oak. As the cigar moves toward the end of the first third there is an ever so faint hint of peat. The retrohale of the cigar adds a hint of almond sweets and additional spice with a relative short finish.
Moving into the second third the sesame seed notes slide into the background as notes of almond develop becoming dominant at time with continued notes of oak. The ever so subtle peat lingers in the background making me wish I had a glass of Oban as I enjoyed this exceptional cigar from Perdomo. The retrohale holds on to a subtle sweetness with the addition of charred meat and black pepper.
The final third of he cigar holds on to some sweetness with an increased earthiness as oak becomes the dominant note. The final third of the cigar showcases that bourbon barrel sweetness that is synonymous with the Perdomo brand. There are notes of red pepper and continued almond on the palate as well as on the moderate finish on this exceptional cigar.
The Finish: Meeting a brand owner can change the perception of the brand and having a chance to sit down with Nicholas Perdomo III, the son of Nick Perdomo gave me a new found appreciation for the brand. This cigar has done the same thing as it is in my opinion the best cigar produced by the Perdomo family. It’s an exceptional smoke with an enjoyable flavor profile and perfect for pairing with a Scotch of your choice. It’s definitely box worthy and then some.
Score: 95 Price: $8.39 / $174.99

Product reviews, great cigars.
I am a novice when it comes to cigars. I have a friend who mostly smokes Perdomo's. I picked this particular bunch to get started. I am also working on getting my humidor to be at the proper humidity. I have enjoyed these cigars so far. They are smooth, and burn evenly. I will continue to try other Perdomo cigars as well. Great cigar!

Discovering the historic neighborhoods of Perm
Perm. Building of the Nobility Assembly, Siberia Street 20. August 1999
The city of Perm, a major industrial and administrative center located just on the European side of the northern Urals, extends for miles along the high east bank of the Kama River. It was a destination of particular interest for Russian photographer and chemist Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky (see box text below), who visited the city on his first trip to the Ural Mountains in 1909.
Prokudin-Gorsky captured a series of riverfront vistas from the just-completed massive railroad bridge across the Kama. But he also took his tripod-mounted camera to the hillocks to the east of the city, where he photographed panoramic views of the central district that give a sense of Perm’s urban neighborhoods.
Panoramic view west from City Hillocks. From right: Monastery Street with Transfiguration Cathedral; Trading (now Soviet) Street with Church of St. Nicholas; Peter-Paul Street; Intercession (now Lenin) Street, with Church of Nativity of the Virgin. Summer 1909
My first visit to the Perm region occurred nine decades after Prokudin-Gorsky, in the summer of 1999. Subsequent trips, in 2014 and 2017, revealed a city marked by major new construction.
The name “Perm” is documented as early as the 12th-century chronicle “Tale of Bygone Years” and is apparently derived from Finno-Ugric words pera ma , meaning "distant land." In the medieval period "Perm" designated territory in the northern Urals controlled by the economic power of Novgorod, whose hunters and traders reaped the bounty of its valuable furs. By the 17th century, much of the area belonged to the vast Stroganov holdings in the northern Urals.
Founded for industry
The settlement of Perm originated in the early 18th century as part of the quest by Peter the Great to exploit ore deposits in the Ural Mountains. These raw materials provided secure sources of essential industrial-grade metals needed above all for the army.
The guiding force in developing this area was Vasily Tatishchev (1686-1750), one of Russia's early professional historians. A scholar with a gift for practical activity, Tatishchev admired Peter the Great and was an influential proponent of the central role of autocrat and state in Russian history.
During the 1720s, Tatishchev established settlements at mines, smelters, and metal-working plants throughout the Urals, including Yekaterinburg. In 1720, he chose the 17th-century village of Yegoshikha, located near the small Yegoshikha River, a tributary of the Kama. The stream is hardly visible in the ravine in the foreground of Prokudin-Gorsky’s rich panoramas.
Construction began on the main Yegoshikha factory on May 4, 1723, which is considered Perm’s founding date. The name “Perm,” however, was officially adopted only in 1781 after a command by Catherine the Great that transformed the factory settlement into an administrative center for the Urals.
Because of its favorable location within the Volga River basin, Perm during the 19th century developed into a transportation center for salt and other minerals, as well as metal ore and the products of metal factories throughout the western Ural Mountains. In 1846 regular steamboat service appeared on the Kama.
Expansion and development
Much of Perm burned during a fire in 1842, but the town quickly recovered. In 1863, Perm was included in the main Siberian highway, and in 1878, construction was completed on the first phase of the Urals Railroad from Perm to Ekaterinburg, part of a railroad construction boom that culminated in the early 20th century with the completion of the TransSiberian Railway.
Perm’s growth at the turn of the 20th century was reflected in Prokudin-Gorsky’s overviews of the central city, with its belching smokestacks. Despite sweeping changes in the century following Prokudin-Gorsky’s visit, several of the buildings captured in his photographs remain.
A historical record in images
Perm. Detail of view west from City Hillocks. Center: Bell tower and Church of St. Nicholas, attached to the Mariinsky Women’s High School. Right background: central fire station & watchtower. Summer 1909
The photograph richest in detail is a panoramic view taken due west from the city hillocks located to the east of the central district. On the far right is Monastery Street with its dominant landmark, the Transfiguration Cathedral, visible through the haze of industrial smoke. This street links a series of monuments surveyed in my previous Perm article .
The next thoroughfare to the left was Trading (now Soviet) Street. Its main landmark (apart from a belching smokestack) is the bell tower and cupolas of the Church of St. Nicholas, built in 1895-99 to commemorate the marriage of soon-to-be-emperor Nicholas and Alexandra in 1894. The church was attached to the large Mariinsky Women’s High School.

With the establishment of Soviet power, the St. Nicholas bell tower and cupolas were demolished, and the entire building was converted for the use of the Agriculture Academy (now a university). My photographs from 1999 reveal that most of the basic red brick structure has survived.
Dimly visible just beyond is the red brick watch tower of the central Perm fire station. Completed in 1883, the tower and its surrounding depot are still maintained in their original function, as my 1999 photograph shows.

In the center of Prokudin-Gorsky’s photograph is a boulevard whose segments were called Great Nobility Street and Peter-Paul Street, the latter named after the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, a sliver of whose bell tower is at the photograph’s right edge. Built in 1757-64, it is the oldest surviving brick church in Perm. I have included my black-and-white photograph of the cathedral. (Its bell tower, destroyed in the Soviet period, has not yet been rebuilt.) Renamed Communist Street during the Soviet period, the entire boulevard is now called Peter-Paul Street.

On the left of Prokudin-Gorsky’s panorama is Intercession (now Lenin) Street. In the distance is the bell tower steeple and dome of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (Lenin Street 48), built with merchant donations over a long period from 1787 to 1816.

This second brick church in Perm was closed in 1928, its bell tower and cupolas were demolished and the structure was converted into a student dormitory. My photograph from 2014 shows the restored church without the bell tower, which was rebuilt at the end of the year.

On the far left, two small green domes indicate the Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Lenin Street 11), built in a neoclassical style in 1889-92 as part of a large orphanage. Prokudin-Gorsky’s took two close views that are especially valuable in view of the structure’s subsequent history. In the 1930s the cupola and bell tower were demolished, and a third story was added — as seen in my 1999 photograph. The building now serves as the Institute of Ecology and Genetics.

Revelations of past splendor
A bit farther down the same block is the splendid Gribushin mansion, hidden by the trees in Prokudin-Gorsky’s photograph. Originally built in 1895-97, the house was rebuilt in 1905 in a lavish baroque manner for the merchant Sergey Gribushin. Referred to in Boris Pasternak's novel Doctor Zhivago as the "house with statues" (in the town of “Yuriatin”), the mansion serves as the headquarters of the Urals Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

And if Prokudin-Gorsky and his assistants had maneuvered his bulky camera just three more blocks, to the intersection of Siberia and Ascension (now Lunacharsky) Streets, they would have photographed two more cultural monuments. On one side is the elegant neoclassical building of the Nobility Assembly, built by Ivan Sviyazev in 1832-37.

On the other side of Siberia Street is the house built in 1852 and acquired in 1862 by Pavel Diaghilev, grandfather of the renowned impresario Serge Diaghilev, who spent much of his childhood there.

Prokudin-Gorsky’s photographs of pre-revolutionary Perm convey an invaluable sense of a provincial Russian city, with its mixture of traditional architecture and rapid industrial expansion. These richly detailed views of the city’s neighborhoods have become a unique record of a historic milieu that fades with each passing year.
In the early 20th century the Russian photographer Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky devised a complex process for color photography. Between 1903 and 1916 he traveled through the Russian Empire and took over 2,000 photographs with the process, which involved three exposures on a glass plate. In August 1918, he left Russia and ultimately resettled in France where he was reunited with a large part of his collection of glass negatives, as well as 13 albums of contact prints. After his death in Paris in 1944, his heirs sold the collection to the Library of Congress. In the early 21st century the Library digitized the Prokudin-Gorsky Collection and made it freely available to the global public. A few Russian websites now have versions of the collection. In 1986 the architectural historian and photographer William Brumfield organized the first exhibit of Prokudin-Gorsky photographs at the Library of Congress. Over a period of work in Russia beginning in 1970, Brumfield has photographed most of the sites visited by Prokudin-Gorsky. This series of articles juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky’s views of architectural monuments with photographs taken by Brumfield decades later.

Chusovoy - the beginning of Yermak trip. The history of the city begins with 1879, when near the railway station Chusovskaya a Russian-French joint-stock company there was laid a metallurgical factory. Since that time near the factory there are two-storied wooden "French houses" - memorials of the factory way of life.
My first visit to the Perm region occurred nine decades after Prokudin-Gorsky, in the summer of 1999. Subsequent trips, in 2014 and 2017, revealed a city marked by major new construction.
