Clad in white marble, the beautiful and absolutely mammoth Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is Abu Dhabi's landmark building and by far the most popular sightseeing attraction in the city.

The mosque fuses Mameluke, Ottoman, and Fatimid design elements to create a harmonious and thoroughly modern mosque that celebrates Islamic architecture.

Artisans used glasswork, mosaic tiling, and intricate carvings to spectacular effect on both the interior and exterior.

It was opened in 2007 after nearly 20 years of construction. Able to hold 40,000 worshippers, it is the biggest mosque in the United Arab Emirates, and like the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Fujairah (the UAE's second biggest mosque), it is dedicated to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan.

The Middle East's most spectacular museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi traces the entire history of humanity's artistic achievements, from the Neolithic right up to the current day.

Small children can test out newly learned driving skills on the Junior GT track, while speed junkies can buckle up and ride the Flying Aces roller coaster, which clocks up speeds of 120 kilometers per hour on a 52-meter loop (the tallest in the world).

Abu Dhabi's Formula One Grand Prix, which takes place in November, is the city's big annual event and is held at Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island.

If you're not in town for the racing, you can still experience some of that Formula One glamor year-round. There are regular guided tours of the circuit, including visits to the pits, grandstand, and podium for Formula One fans who want to see the track and get a behind-the-scenes look at the circuit.

The most popular day trip or overnight trip from Abu Dhabi city is a desert safari to the south of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, either to the beautiful Liwa Oasis, which lays right on the edge of the Empty Quarter, or to the Al Khatim Desert near Al Ain .

The Empty Quarter desert contains the largest sand dunes in the world, and the dunes of both areas are a fantastic playground for anyone who wants to ride dune buggies, try sandboarding, go camel trekking, or simply soak up the vast star-strewn desert sky after dark at a desert camp.

Most trips include stops to visit a camel farm and offer a taste of traditional desert life, as well as heading into the dunes themselves.

The Evening Desert Safari is a great option for visitors with only a short time to spare, offering a six-hour tour into the emirate's desert environs. Visitors are taken on a 4x4 tour of the dunescape before settling down for dinner at a desert camp, with traditional tannura and belly dancing entertainment provided. Once at camp, guests can choose from a host of complimentary activities, such as sand-boarding and camel rides. All transport, with pickup and drop-off from Abu Dhabi hotels, and food is included.

One of the best short breaks from Abu Dhabi city is to the wildlife reserve of Sir Bani Yas Island, first established by Sheikh Zayed.

Indigenous Arabian wildlife such as gazelles and the endangered Arabian Oryx plus introduced animals, including giraffes and leopards, free roam within the vast reserve, which covers the interior of Sir Bani Yas Island.

The luxury resort here offers guests a variety of activities, including 4x4 safaris, walking safaris, and horse-riding tours to view wildlife within the reserve, as well as other activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking.

The island is accessed by boat (booked through the resort) from Jebel Dhanna, 260 kilometers west of the city.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is a working veterinary hospital for ill and injured falcons, but it also provides guided tours of its facilities for interested visitors.

The tours allow you to get up close and personal with these birds of prey in the wards, while an on-site museum explains the history of falconry.

Guided tours of the hospital (which must be pre-booked) are held twice daily Monday to Thursday and once daily Friday and Sunday and are one of the few opportunities a visitor has in Abu Dhabi to connect with traditional Emirati heritage.

If you're up for the challenge, you may also have the chance to hold one of the birds, or even to feed one, depending on the activities the vets are performing at the time of your visit.

If the heat is grinding you down, head to Yas Island to cool off at the water park. Yas Waterworld is a mammoth theme park, spanning 37 acres with 40 rides, including multiple waterslides and an inner-tube river ride.

For serious adrenaline seekers, there's also the world's first hydromagnetic tornado water rafting ride; the world's largest surfable sheet wave; and the Jebel Drop, a free-fall speed waterslide.

For families with smaller children, there are also dedicated areas for gentler play.

Facilities are excellent, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and shops to make it easy to spend a whole day of water park action here.

Abu Dhabi's answer to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is this observation deck. It offers skyline views from the highest point in the city, on the 74th floor of the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers hotel (at 300 meters above sea level).

There is an entry fee for non-guests of the hotel, but the ticket price can be redeemed for food and drink from the observation deck's restaurant which serves snacks and light bites; soft drinks; and a popular high-tea experience.

Having high tea up here is a leisurely way to take in the views, which swoop across the coast and the city with the arid desert plains beyond.

The recently restored Al-Hosn Fort, also known as the Old Fort or the White Fort, is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi and one of its major historical points of interest.

The palace was built in 1793 as the residence of the ruling family and the seat of government.

The interior of the Al Hosn Fort has been modernized and is now used as a museum that traces the history and culture of Abu Dhabi, with oral histories and plenty of historical photographs on show.

The courtyard and the magnificent tile work over the main northern gate are notable features.

Abu Dhabi's Heritage Village is an authentic replica of a typical Bedouin village that gives visitors an idea of Emirati life before the oil boom.

It's located in a pretty beach area of the city, which is a pleasant place to wander after a visit.

There are exhibits featuring traditional day-to-day objects, workshops where you can watch craftspeople demonstrate Emirati metalwork and weaving skills, and displays introducing visitors to local agriculture and the pearl diving trade-the main economies here before oil was discovered.

The heritage village is a bit rundown these days, but it remains one of the few places in the city where traditional Emirati life can be explored.

For mall shopping, Yas Mall on Yas Island is the major destination, with 370 shops.

For crafts, the World Trade Center Souk in downtown Abu Dhabi is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional bazaar, designed by architect Norman Foster. The shops here sell good gift items, ranging from incense and spices to inlaid woodwork and textiles.

To pick up a piece of classic Arab-style gold jewelry, head to the Gold Souq inside Madinat Zayed Shopping Center, where you'll find dozens of gold vendors.

Abu Dhabi city is vast, and hotels are spread out across the area. For first time visitors, the Downtown area, near the Corniche, is a good base and has a wide variety of hotels. If you're after a resort-style stay, check out Saadiyat Island and the area near the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, along the shores that separate Abu Dhabi Island from the mainland.

1.Visit the Fossil Dunes

The Fossil Dunes are an experience and one of the best free things to do in Abu Dhabi. They are located approximately 70km south of Abu Dhabi beyond Musaffah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City along Al Ain Truck Road (E30).

These awe-inspiring natural structures are breathtaking and are a magical mix of nature’s natural elements.

Abu Dhabi’s Fossil Dunes are a series of unique sculptures which are made up of encrusted sand deposits moulded by the wind over time.

The formations change over the course of their lives as they come into contact with calcium carbonate permeating through them until it hardens forming different abstract shapes every single day.

Access is by 4WD which is recommended for making it possible to park nearby. However, be aware visitors are not allowed to climb on them and should leave the area as they found it.

There are many paths guiding visitors through the fascinating fossils.

2. Long Salt Lake

For access to some of the most stunning scenery Abu Dhabi has to offer, consider taking a trip out into the Al Wathba region.

There are vast stretches for off-roading so four-wheel drive vehicles are again necessary here. Make sure to have all your necessities such as water, petrol etc before heading on your Al Wathba adventure!

There are actually two ‘lakes’, one on either side of the access road that leads you to this spot. As the lakes are revealed, the big emerald pools encapsulated with snow-white salt crust banks give them an otherworldly feel.

The surroundings quickly feel like something straight out of Scandinavia or perhaps Mars.

How does the Salt Lake exist?

The high salt content of the ground underneath, mixing with the hot climate and water deposits, results in the salt flats or ‘sabkha’. 

The mystery, however, lies in the large dense salt pad features often seen being used as stepping stones throughout the channel.

It takes a significant period of time for these sorts of structures to develop through erosion and depositing, much longer in fact than is possible in the time these man-made lakes were created.

3. Explore Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

Once a coastal salt flat, Al Wathba wetland reserve has flourished into a mix of natural and man-made lakes that enable many of Abu Dhabi’s species to thrive.

The reserve was the first place in the region to be protected by law.

The reserve houses more than 250 birds, 37 plant species and a wide range of sea life. 

What makes this one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi for free though, is the 4,000 flamingos that can be seen in the reserve during autumn and spring.

The Founding Founder of the UAE, also known as “the father” or ‘Abdul’ Aziz bin Sultan Al-Nahyan had this grand mosque built in order to create a cultural haven for everyone; no matter their background.

The magnificent edifice of Qutr al-Marah is a sight to behold. The 1,096 amethyst and jasper embedded columns and 82 white marble domes with reflective pools underneath them make for breathtaking photos !

In fact, a photo doesn’t do justice to just how incredible these structures really are, so be sure to spend a good amount of time here, especially at sunset when the colours are spectacular!

What to wear when visiting Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Visitors are asked to follow a specific dress code as an act of respect. Shoulders and knees must be covered, shoes are to be removed at the entry gate. Women must also wear abayas.

For men, it is likely that they can dress appropriately for the visit. However, women will likely have to purchase traditional clothing to enter the mosque as their bodies and hair must be covered.

There are a couple of options here:

1. Wear trousers and long sleeves and purchase a hijab which is worn over the hair, ears and neck.

2. Wear any clothing and purchase an abaya to be worn over clothes with a hood that will cover the female’s hair.

Often, both men and women like to purchase traditional clothing as part of the experience and enhance their photo opportunities.

There are ample places to purchase this clothing around the mosque’s entrance and in many shops in any shopping mall.

These items will differ in price but it is recommended to try a few places and purchase the best deal.

6. Go to Al Hudayriyat Beach

There are plenty of things in Abu Dhabi to do for free. Located on 3,000 hectares southwest of Abu Dhabi, Al Hudayriat Island boasts an extensive list of amenities for visitors.

Hudayriat Island is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The Island is accessible by a large sweeping bridge which links to the mainland.

Visitors can enjoy the free public be a ch , which includes parasols and loungers and soak up the striking beauty with high-end sporting facilities!

Some of these facilities include tennis courts, football pitches, basketball courts, padel courts, and 400m athletics track, a 5km and 10km cycling track, skate park, BMX park, a high ropes park and the OCR park. 

Facilities at Al Hudayriyat Beach

Many of these facilities are available to use free of charge or at a small cost. The beach , cycling track, and various parks are available to the public for free. 

If you own a bike or are willing to pay a low price to rent one, the 5km and 10km bike track is a must.

The track takes cyclists around the perimeter of the island, with stunning views of the coast as well as passing many of the sports parks , finishing along the beach back near the car park. 

Bike and skateboard enthusiasts should take full advantage of the free thrilling parks designed for the most exciting tricks and flips!

Adventure enthusiasts are highly encouraged to pay the OCR a visit, this obstacle course consists of eight different obstacles and eight different fitness elements.

Visitors don’t have to choose from just one food truck. A whole host of tasty treat trucks are available so that everyone can find something perfect for them!

In addition to the food trucks along the main beachfront (that are also drive-thru), there is a complete wooden walkway with many great restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Some popular restaurants include Rain, Shrimp Pot, Babu Town, Projecto Acai and Muncheeze. There are also several great places for coffee , such as DRVN, I Love Coffee and Shot.

7. Stroll Yas Bay Waterfront

Go to Yas Bay Waterfront for some of Abu Dhabi’s most high-end sightseeing opportunities. The array of activities entertains and indulges the taste buds with delicious food and refreshing drinks!

You are spoilt for choice here in terms of great places to eat, with a multitude of different cuisines available. One of the best times to visit is at night time when the waterfront promenade is lit up and sparkles with all its glitz and glam.

8. Take a Stroll on Soul Beachfront

Soul Beach is the latest addition to Saadiyat Island and is another place to be seen in Abu Dhabi. It can be found between the Louvre Abu Dhabi, in what used to just have trees on it.

This location next door to Manarat Al Saadiyat gives easy access for shopping or grabbing some food while listening to music at one of Berklee’s stages!

If visitors can stand the heat, Saadiyat Island is a beautiful place to visit in the middle of summer. They can enjoy 400m of pristine white sandy beach with parasols, sun loungers and good food at their fingertips!

There are also many ac t ivities for children including sand castle-building workshops or games on site where they will indeed spend hours playing.

While it is free to visit the area, the beach charges around Dhs50 for a lounger and parasol mid-week and Dhs75 on the weekend.

9. Visit Emirates Palace

Another Abu Dhabi tourist attraction is the iconic Emirates Palace. This luxurious resort offers guests an outstanding experience from the moment they arrive. Positioned on a private white sand beach, the palace welcomes everyone into its world of indulgence and the service is second to none!

As one of Abu Dhabi’s top attractions, there’s plenty here to keep families occupied during their stay at this amazing property. However, there is no need to stay to enjoy the stunning beauty of Emirates Palace.

Abu Dhabi is a great place to visit for families, couples , or even singles. Some of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi require an entrance fee.

From outdoor activities in Abu Dhabi, such as waterparks, to amazing dining experiences at some of the best hotels in the world. Below is a list of some paid activities in Abu Dhabi to keep everyone entertained on their visit .

13. Desert Safari 

Take a journey to the Middle East on a desert safari where guests can visit some of Earth’s most exotic animals. The first stop is at a camel farm, these well-adjusted desert dwellers have been around since before recorded history!

Guests can also usually drive 2-4 seater sand buggies around a designated area of the desert . This is usually at an additional charge however, we certainly recommend doing this.

Take it in turns to ride around with family or friends or, if there are enough of you, race!

Usually, there will be a few market-type stalls or shops around the camel and buggy area. Here, you can purchase things like traditional scarves and other clothing .

Similar to spending time in a traditional Arabian market or souk, the salespeople may be eager to put these items on you to get you to purchase.

14. Desert 4WD

Next, it’s off into the 4WD for some thrilling dune bashing, make sure to hold on tight as guests are driven up and down the mountainous dunes on the way towards the desert camp .

There is nothing quite as thrilling as desert bashing on one of these safari experiences.

You may be able to stop for a break from the exhilarating bashing to walk up some dunes and get some beautiful sunset pictures with your party.

The campsite areas are very traditional, with makeshift stalls and tents around a large stage.

Guests will be treated to a seated BBQ buffet dinner whilst enjoying a show, usually some dancing and music.

There will also be some camels and buggies or quads around the site, which visitors can take advantage of at a small extra cost.

Then you will either be driven back to an agreed location or, if you are staying the night, be shown to your tent where you can sleep under the desert stars.

If you stay the night, you will also be treated to breakfast the following morning before being driven back to an agreed location.

15. Mangroves Jubail Board Walk

Visitors to Abu Dhabi’s beautiful Jubail Mangrove Park have been exploring the walking trails since it opened in January 2020. And with good reason!

The mangroves are a refreshing escape from busy city life, offering visitors lush greenery and the tranquil sounds of the tides flowing in and out around them.

The pathways wind through the mangroves, allowing visitors to explore the natural landscape and wildlife living in the waterways below.

A floating platform is on site where rangers are available for questions about the local environment and marine life underwater – they will show off their expertise in an informative manner!

The site was developed to increase awareness, appreciation and understanding of the mangrove habitats and how they support the protection of the Abu Dhabi coastline.

It is located on a beautiful island between two otherworldly locations. Opening times are from 8 am to 6.30 pm daily and admission is around Dhs15.

If you get hungry or thirsty on your travels, there is a lovely cafe restaurant, ‘Crane’ at the park entrance.

Here guests can enjoy refreshing drinks like fresh juices and smoothies, all made in-house.

There are also many delicious food options, like freshly prepared sandwiches and baked pastries.

Visitors have the option to sit inside in the fresh AC or outdoors in the shade with stunning views of the mangroves.

16. Qasar Al Watan

Qasr Al Watan is more than a palace; it’s an interactive journey in which visitors can learn about Abu Dhabi and UAE culture through history from both local and international perspectives.

The fascinating building has been designed to show how governance works on every level – from what people wear when they’re visiting queens or meeting foreign leaders down to their shoes!

Visitors can explore the spectacular building and enjoy the arabesque design and architecture.

“Reem Mall in Abu Dhabi has recently unveiled Snow Abu Dhabi, an indoor park that recreates sub-zero temperatures for visitors to enjoy. This expansive 9,732-square-metre facility is situated on the mall’s second level and is operated by Majid Al Futtaim, the same company known for managing Ski Dubai at the Mall of the Emirates.

25. Al Ain Zoo

The Al Ain Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals. Some of these can be seen up close like the giraffe feeding experience and other exotic species who live in transparent enclosures.

27. Umm Al Emarat Park

Umm Al Emarat Park is one of the largest and oldest parks in Abu Dhabi. Originally named Mushrif Park, it has seen extensive renovations resulting in a great day out for the whole family, friends or even alone!

There are various things to do in this park, including the Shade House, which is operated in partnership with Emirates Park Zoo.

This structure houses plants grown under artificial sunlight and includes two upper-level decks boasting picturesque views for all to enjoy.

28. Qasr Al Hosn

Qasr Al Hosn, the historical site in Abu Dhabi, has been home to many important figures and events over time.

Today it stands as both an archive for our nation’s history but also acts as a living memorial with its timeless architecture reflecting what life was like back when these places were first established centuries ago! 

Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest standing structure in Abu Dhabi and home to an original watchtower that makes for incredible photographs .

50. What to Wear in Abu Dhabi

When visiting any country, obeying their laws and respecting the local culture is always good. So let’s look at how one should dress in Abu Dhabi before booking their trip!

Even though the UAE is a Muslim country and follows Sharia Law, tourists will not end up in prison if they aren’t appropriately dressed.

However, if visitors are not respectful of their surroundings, they may end up with several angry glances and may be asked to cover up.

The weather is good all year round with the hottest time of year from April to October. As it is hot all year round, pack light comfortable clothes to keep cool.

There may be no dress code, however, there are a few items of clothing which should be left behind. Any clothing deemed too revealing, promoting banned substances or too tight is a no-no.

Shorts and t-shirts are fine as long as they are not too short or see-through. At the beach or hotel swimming pool, swimwear is acceptable, remember to cover up in other areas.

As it is hot outside, expect the air conditioning to be blasting anywhere indoors. A light jacket or cardigan is a good idea if it gets chilly.

There are plenty of ways to get around Abu Dhabi. While it is not the city for walking, there are plenty of options for seeing the sights.

The cheapest way to get from A to B is by bus. While the buses all have air conditioning, it can involve waiting a long time in the sweltering heat for the bus to arrive. Like anywhere else, trips need to be organized around bus timetables.

One of the most popular choices to get around the city is by taxi. In fact, many apps are making it easier to book and pay for one. Some of the most popular apps are Uber and Abu Dhabi taxi app.

Both can be easily downloaded and available in all parts of the city. The taxi fares in the UAE are very reasonable compared to other cities worldwide.

Whilst we love the entertainment offering in Abu Dhabi, from the  Yas Island theme parks  to the beautiful beaches and parks, these cultural attractions should be a must on every visitor’s itinerary for Abu Dhabi.

We have included eight absolute must-stop points in Abu Dhabi city for the culturally intrigued, as well as a further four attractions you can add on a day trip to the Emirate’s second largest city Al Ain.

We’ve topped our listing off with some seasonal cultural events you should also look to add to your plans.

How to get there – navigating around Abu Dhabi

Most of these attractions can be easily accessed by staying in central Abu Dhabi, by taxi, or as stops accessible on the  Abu Dhabi Big Bus Hop-on-hop-off service .

Top Tip : If you are visiting Abu Dhabi from Dubai, it is highly recommended you arrange a private tour to capture all the highlights and work to your own timetable rather than being stuck in a big coach group.

Since we first wrote this post, there’s also been a new Visit Abu Dhabi shuttle bus added that can transport you between top attractions for FREE (conditions apply) .

Note that it would be impossible to fit all of these attractions into a 1 Day Abu Dhabi itinerary – we’d suggest picking out three from the list you want to see most; Al Ain really needs a full extra day in your travel plans.

1. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The unmissable first attraction on most Abu Dhabi visitors lists, and with good reason.  The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is not just a stunning landmark but an active house of worship, open to all religions to admire and reflect.

There is a minimum dress standard expected , but this only adds to the experience. It is free to enter the Grand Mosque and free to join a guided tour.

2. The Louvre Abu Dhabi

Although not directly Emirati or Bedioun culture, The Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi is an unmissable part of the UAE’s modern culture, reflective of blending so many different cultures and traditions.

The Louvre Museum’s main galleries take you on a journey through humanity, from early civilisations and communications through to the modern era of art, seamlessly blending between East and West.

3. Qasr al Watan – The Presidential Palace

Part of the new Presidential Palace complex, Qasr al Watan is one of the most beautiful examples of modern Islamic architecture.

Whilst you cannot visit the working parts of the Palace, visitors are invited to explore the public areas of Qasr Al Watan, enjoy daily guided tours, and explore the expansive gardens, the Great Hall, the library and an evening sound and light show at 7.30 PM.

4. The Founders Memorial

Launched during the Year of Zayed – the 100-year anniversary of the country’s founding father, HH Sheikh Zayed – the Founders Memorial is a stunning sculptural display set at the end of the Corniche on the corner of Emirates Palace before you cross to the marina. 

Open day and night but is most impressive to see at sunset when the 1327 dangling geometric shapes become illuminated by 2000 lights to form a 3D image of HH Sheikh Zayed.

5. Wahat Al Karama

Situated opposite the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a Memorial and Pavillion of Honour were opened in 2016 to immortalise the sacrifices made by UAE nationals in active service for their country.

Translated to English, the “Oasis of Dignity”  is made of 31 aluminium-clad tablets that lean on one another in support, and are inscribed with poems and quotations.  This is an incredibly sad yet important chapter in the UAE’s modern history, a country rarely involved in conflict.

You can easily combine a visit to the Grand Mosque with Wahat al Karama for some of the best distance Mosque views but crossing the busy freeway is a challenge. (You can now catch a courtesy bus every 30 minutes between SZGM and Wahat al Karama).

6. Qasr al Hosn

The oldest standing building in Abu Dhabi, built in the 1790s, the stone fort was originally constructed to overlook the coastal trade routes and protect the growing island settlement.

Recently reopened after extensive renovation work, Qasr al Hosn is now the city’s centrepiece of culture and learning.

As well as a history museum, it is also home to the  Cultural Foundation  and the city’s new  Abu Dhabi Children’s Library.  There is a daily program of cultural events and special events held on the grounds throughout the year.

7. UAE Heritage Village

Based on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche breakwater with stunning views back to the ultra-modern Abu Dhabi skyline.

The Heritage Village is run by the Emirates Heritage Club, giving you a taster of traditional bedouin housing, an old-style souk, and artisans producing handicrafts, including pottery and weaving. On occasion, they also have falconry displays and craftsmen demonstrations.

It has been outshone, however, by the re-opening of Qasr al Hosn, which has many more interactive displays. Entry is completely free if you are seeking just a small introductory taster to Bedouin life in the city.

8. The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

This humble building on the city’s outskirts offers a fascinating insight into Emirati culture and the importance of falconry.

A 2-hour guided tour of the facilities in Sweihan will guide you through the historic importance of falconry to the Bedouin people through to the hospital itself where these majestic birds are cared for and you have the opportunity of up-close encounters.

It comes with a heftier price tag than some of the other attractions listed here, but in our own experience, it was worth every dirham. A really in-depth tour is provided with narrative, a chance to see the Falcons up close, and even see an operation take place. Pre-booking essential.

Al ain cultural attractions.

The next four cultural attractions are based in Al Ain, the Oasis city that sits 160kms south of Abu Dhabi city centre.  It is also known as the cultural capital of the UAE, home to the country’s founding fathers and steeped in history.

9. Al Ain Palace Museum

The historic royal residence of the UAE’s founding father HH Sheikh Zayed. This beautifully restored homestead in Al Ain is a vast contrast to the modern-day Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi city.

The palace was his primary family home until 1966 and has been restored and turned into a museum of the Al Nahyan family’s history. Delving into HH Sheikh Zayed’s personal and political life, it gives you a good taste of what life was like in the UAE before the discovery of oil. You can also have a go at trying to understand the Al Nahyan royal family tree!

10. Qasr al Muwaiji

Also situated in Al Ain, this much more modern museum complex sits on the grounds of the original birthplace of the country’s second president HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed al Nayhan.

Explore the historic buildings, listen to oral narratives and follow the significant achievements of HH Sheikh Khalifa’s life.

11. Al Ain Oasis

The 3000-acre oasis can be found in the centre of Al Ain.  Home to over 147,000 palm trees, the oasis was designated as a  UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011,  along with six other smaller oases across the city.

Almost compulsory for everyone who lives in the UAE to understand the way of life. Explore the 3000-year-old falaj irrigation system – a grid of waterways for channelling fresh clean water from off the mountains and into the oasis. You will also find the miniature oasis which is an interactive display breaking down the workings of the oasis.

12. The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre

Situated inside the Al Ain Zoo, this is definitely one of the country’s best learning resources for culture, heritage and natural history – and completely deserving of more attention, arguably where we’d recommend all visitors to the UAE start their learning journey!

There are five interactive galleries spread over multiple levels that take you on a journey from the desert past, local geology and neolithic period life all the way through to the country’s present and future, along with sustainability education and initiatives.

A Camel Beauty Pageant – The Al Dhafra Festival

If you are living in the UAE, or are visiting during December , then attending the Al Dhafra festival in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi is a must.

Established in 2007, the festival was established to educate younger generations about their country’s indigenous heritage, traditions and culture. Events range from the ever-popular camel beauty contest through to date packing, camel milking, Saluki racing and falconry.

Information on the event’s program, in English at least, has been scant in the past but is improving.  It’s one of those events you should turn up to and absorb the atmosphere, situated in Madinat Zayed Park, approximately 2 hours from Abu Dhabi city.

Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival

A great new addition to the UAE culture calendar, this annual event is held in a purpose-built centre for culture in Al Watha , just outside of Abu Dhabi city. It showcases local foods, dance and traditional events while taking visitors on a journey from ancient times to a prosperous society.

As the event has grown in popularity, it can now be enjoyed for several months over the cooler winter season. This year the festival is open nightly from 17 November 2022 to 9 March 2024. The entry fee is just 5 AED per person.

I recently visited Abu Dhabi for 5 days and I LOVED it! Yes, I’ve been to Dubai before and this things to do in Abu Dhabi post certainly isn’t comparing ‘is Abu Dhabi better than Dubai ‘ but I know many people wonder if Abu Dhabi is worth visiting and ‘ what to do in Abu Dhabi ?’

I found Abu Dhabi full of cultural attractions which included art, history and religion, and adventurous things to do like kayaking and the world’s fastest roller coaster! Let me tell you now that there ARE a lot of fun things to do in Abu Dhabi.

Whether you’re in the planning stages of a holiday to Abu Dhabi or you’ve got everything booked, keep reading for the best things to do in Abu Dhabi ! Yallah!

Things to do in Abu Dhabi

To help you plan your itinerary for Abu Dhabi, here are all of the places to see in Abu Dhabi and places to go in Abu Dhabi noted on a map.

Like all cities, to save you time and energy it’s best to look at the map and plan to visit attractions in one part of the city together and then focus on another section on another day.

In this Abu Dhabi travel blog, I also help you group together and plan your days like recommending seeing the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Jubail Mangrove Park together as they are both on one side of the city with not much else around and there’s no point in going over there twice in one trip.

1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Without a doubt, the top place to visit in Abu Dhabi is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque because it’s stunning and one-of-a-kind but also because it’s the iconic Abu Dhabi photo and photo spot!

The mosque is free to enter so get this on your list of places to visit in Abu Dhabi for free and the mosque is open all week for most of the day.

I do advise going to the mosque just before sunset and then you’ll get to see it in daytime golden hour and also at night, plus you’ll be there for sunset prayer and hear the call to prayer which is truly magical.

2. Qasr AlWatan

Qasr in Arabic means palace which is a word you’ll get used to in Abu Dhabi. So Qasr AlWatan means ‘Palace of the Nations ‘.

This is high on my list of things to do in Abu Dhabi because it is absolutely incredible to visit and easily one of the top Abu Dhabi attractions . I could not get over the grander here!

You have to purchase a ticket online in advance or at the door and a bus will take you a short journey to the palace. Here you can walk around the huge courtyard before going inside.

This palace in Abu Dhabi was only opened in 2015 and it’s a working presidential palace so it’s in incredible condition and built with a mix of modern and traditional Arabic architecture.

3. Qasr AlHosn

Another palace to visit in Abu Dhabi is Qasr AlHosn , this has a very different look to Qasr AlWatan but it’s fascinating to visit!

This is a fort and it’s actually the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi .

Abu Dhabi has grown rapidly fast and visiting Qasr AlHosn is a great way to get an idea of what this part of Abu Dhabi looked like before it developed as we see it today.

The museum is inside in air-con so it’s one of the good indoor activities in Abu Dhabi and then you go outside to see some more parts of the fort.

I really liked the square that Qasr AlHosn is located in, there are a few cafes around so be sure to combine this stop with a coffee or lunch on your Abu Dhabi itinerary,

And if you are Muslim, there are really amazing prayer rooms by The Espresso Lab which is a minute away from Qasr AlHosn.

4. Gold Coffee or Ice Cream at Emirates Palace

The Emirates Palace is so iconic. I’d go as far as staying it’s the second most iconic place in Abu Dhabi after the Sheikh Zayed mosque so you have to add this to your list of places to go in Abu Dhabi .

The hotel is world-famous and a luxury 5-star hotel and thankfully you don’t have to stay here to visit.

You can enter the Emirates Palace for free , have a look around and dine in one of the cafes or restaurants.

I recommend going to Le Cafe as I did which is on the ground floor of the hotel and no reservations are needed. Here you can order a variety of drinks including a Gold Cappuccino , a Gold Matcha Latte and Gold covered Ice Cream .

You don’t have to book a ticket in advance but if you want to so it’s all paid for, or as a gift for someone else you can book this Le Cafe package which includes the Gold Cappuccino, and a Coffee or Tea and a slice of cake.

They are priced higher than usual drinks and they don’t taste that different but how often can you say that you have drank or eaten gold! Only in Abu Dhabi, that’s what I say and why I had to add it to my own things to do in Abu Dhabi!

5. Louvre Abu Dhabi

Yes, the Louvre is not just in Paris! There is one in Abu Dhabi too and I loved visiting it!

I’m not hugely into art galleries and museums but the impressive architecture of the Louvre Abu Dhabi was enough to impress me.

As far as Abu Dhabi tourist attractions go, the Louvre is high on the list.

It is surrounded by some lovely and tranquil gardens with an amazing view of the city skyline. Go inside and you are taken through a maze of art and sculpture pieces from around the world and at every turn, you get a glimpse of the water surrounding the museum.

At the end, you go outside and can sit by the water, have a meal or coffee in the restaurant and take in impressive dome structure from the inside .

I went for lunch at Aptitude Cafe after my visit to the Louvre which has an amazing view of the building, a great vibe and sells healthy drinks and meals so I really recommend it!

6. Kayaking at The Louvre

There are 3 great options for kayaking in Abu Dhabi and one of them is at the Louvre which you might not have expected, I certainly didn’t until searching for what to do in Abu Dhabi.

Sea-Hawks Water Sports can take you out onto the Arabian Sea for 1 hour to see the architecture of the building from another perspective and to learn more about the museum.

Children as young as 6 years old can go on this although until 12 years old they must be accompanied by an adult so its one of the great things to do in Abu Dhabi with kids.

7. Kayaking in Eastern Mangrove National Park

For a super relaxing but educational and interesting kayaking experience in Abu Dhabi, check out this 2 hour kayaking trip in Eastern Mangrove National Park .

This mangrove is thriving in around 60 species including turtles and fish and this kayaking trip in Abu Dhabi allows you to get close to the mangroves, learn about the importance of them to Abu Dhabi city and you’ll stop halfway through at a beach and can swim if you want.

This is the longest kayaking trip you’ll get in Abu Dhabi, below I give you the experience of kayaking in Jubail Mangrove Park which I did but this was just a 1-hour trip whereas this is 2 hours!

8. Kayaking in Jubail Mangrove Park

The third opportunity to kayak in Abu Dhabi is at Jubail Mangrove Park. Jubail is another one of the islands in Abu Dhabi but it is connected by a bridge.

This actually works well paired with a trip to the Louvre as they are on the same side of the city. I went to The Louvre at 12:00 and then to Jubail Mangrove at 15:00.

The kayaking experience is 1 hour and you go out with a group and leader. We didn’t kayak that far and we thought we’d kayak through more overgrown mangroves whereas most of it was in open water but we did stop at a sand island halfway through before heading back and it was a really unique thing to do in Abu Dhabi so we enjoyed it and our guide was great to chat to and helpful.

It’s also one of the good things to do in Abu Dhabi for families due to the ease of the kayaking and as a way to get out of the city and into nature.

9. Jubail Mangrove Park Board Walk

Jubail Mangrove Park is the first self-contained educational, nature and leisure destination  of it’s kind in Abu Dhabi and has been designed to make people aware of the important ecological function of the mangrove which protects the Abu Dhabi coastline.

Being here is so calming and you can’t believe the city is so close.

There is a visitor centre which is where the boardwalk starts and the kayaking starts. The boardwalk is a short walk alongside the mangroves in a relaxing setting and is great for photo opportunities. There’s also a cafe at the visitor centre so you can stay and take in the views a little longer after your walk or kayaking session.

10. Evening Desert safari

Can you visit the UAE and not go on a desert safari?? Not really!

A desert safari is one of the fun things to do in Abu Dhabi ! Yes, it is very touristy but it’s also a fun afternoon and evening and easy because you don’t have to think about a thing, the guides sort everything!

We got picked up at our hotel at 14:00 by our jeep guide and drove 1 hour into the Abu Dhabi dessert, we let down the tires a bit, met the other jeeps and the thrill of dune bashing started!

This is the most highly rated desert safari tour in Abu Dhabi and it’s a great price. Bookings are needed in advance so click here to check availability!

We drove up and down the dunes dune bashing for about an hour or so stopping to see some camels on the way too before arriving at our camp where we could go on the quad bikes, sandboarding or just walk along the dunes until sunset and then enjoyed a buffet and some entertainment.

Both my husband and I had been on a desert safari in Dubai and we nearly cancelled this activity as it was on our last day in Abu Dhabi and the last of our things to do in Abu Dhabi but we went and we enjoyed it so much, it’s touristy and not an authentic dessert experience but you have to enjoy it for what it is!

11. Morning Sunrise Desert Safari

If you don’t have time for an evening safari on your Abu Dhabi holiday then you can do a morning safari or perhaps you’ve done an evening one before, this will offer you a new experience!

This is a highly rated and reviewed morning Safari for a great price which includes dune bashing, sandboarding and a camel ride.

A positive of a morning safari is benefitting from cooler temperatures , especially if visiting Abu Dhabi in summer.

12. Abu Dhabi Hop On Hop Off Bus

Abu Dhabi city is big and all Abu Dhabi tourist attractions are quite far from each other. As with many cities around the world, the best and easiest way to see them all is a hop-on-hop-off bus !

This bus will take you to the best Abu Dhabi tourist spots and give you information about the city on the way.

Some people think these are too touristy but honestly, they are convenient and great value for money.

Getting around Abu Dhabi on your own means hiring a car and driving or getting taxis but communication with taxi drivers can be hard and waiting for taxis each time and the cost of them do add up.

13. Sunbathe or Watersports on Saadiyat Beach

There are so many Abu Dhabi activities that it’s easy to forget that you can just head to the beach and chill in Abu Dhabi too!

One of the best beaches in Abu Dhabi and most desirable beaches is Saadiyat Beach which is a long stretch of white sand perfect for sunbathing and doing eco-friendly watersports . There is also a range of food and leisure outlets to help you give you a beach day in Abu Dhabi!

14. Saadiyat Beach Club

If you want an exclusive experience and day of luxury in Abu Dhabi then look into Saadiyat Beach Cub . They offer day passes which give access to their private beach, outdoor pool and cabana sunbeds.

15. Observation Deck at 300

For an amazing view of Abu Dhabi head to Observation Deck at 300 ! When planning your Abu Dhabi itinerary this pairs well with visiting the Emirates Palace, Qasr AlWatan and the Founders Memorial as it is close to them all!

16. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Easily one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi and famous Abu Dhabi attractions is Ferrari World!

This is the only Ferrari branded theme park in the whole world located in the heart of Yas Island with the world’s fastest roller coaster because this is the UAE and Ferrari working together!

It’s great for families with young children and adults to visit on their own because it’s not all about the rides, there are shows, shopping and you can even drive your own Ferrari !

17. Cycle Around Yas Marina Circuit for free

One of my friends told me about this, they went with their kids in the evening time and said it was great, especially in the cooler evening weather. Plus, how often can you bike around a real F1 track ?

Yas Marina Circuit is open for cyclers, joggers and walkers to go around the track in a clockwise direction. This is actually one of the free things to do in Abu Dhabi as in partnership with Abu Dhabi cycling cub complimentary bikes are available for adults and children from ComYas village.

If you go in the evening, get there early as there are limited bikes available.

18. Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi

A waterpark is one of the best activities in Abu Dhabi in the hot months so welcome to Yas Waterworld located on Yas Island.

This waterpark is home to 45 rides, slides and attractions and has something for every water lover!

19. Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi

Want to visit some well-known household names? Get Warner Bros on your list of things to do in Abu Dhabi!

This is the world’s first-ever Warner Bros. branded indoor theme park meaning it’s perfect if you’re looking for indoor things to do in Abu Dhabi as it gets so hot outside during the day here and can be unbearable for children in the summer.

With 29 state of the art rides and lots of famous names like Scooby-do, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Tom and Jerry you’re bound to have a memorable day out by yourself or with the kids.

20. Yas Mall

I was searching for the best shopping mall in Abu Dhab i and there are not that many impressive shopping malls to be honest, not like Dubai with fountains and aquariums inside but Yas Mall is the largest shopping mall in Abu Dhabi and offers a great experience with all the shops you could ever want and plenty of food options.

21. Yas Bay

Sometimes in countries in the Gulf, you just want to walk and it can be hard to find areas to walk through.

Yas Bay is a great place to come to get some food, have a walk and see what takes your fancy. No need to book any attraction tickets in Abu Dhabi here just enjoy this waterfront leisure destination .

22. Yas Island Sightseeing Cruise

As you can see above, there are so many places to visit in Yas Island and Yas Island attractions and to see them all at a relaxed pace, why not take a sightseeing cruise in a traditional dhow boat?

23. Climbing & Indoor Skydiving at CLYMB

Holidays are for trying new things and the UAE tries to do everything as the ‘best in the world’ ‘the biggest in the world’ ‘the highest in the world’, so at CLYMB located on Yas Island, you can do an indoor skydive in the worlds biggest indoor flight chamber as well as indoor climbing.

Again, this is one of the great indoor things to do in Abu Dhabi if it’s getting too hot for you outside!

24. Sir Bani Yas Safari

Earlier in this list of things to do in Abu Dhabi I mentioned a desert safari which actually had nothing to do with animals but this is a safari in Abu Dhabi that does!

Sir Bani Yas Safari gives a unique opportunity to see wildlife roam free in a protected environment off the coast of Abu Dhabi on Sir Bani Yas Island. Drive around in a 4×4 in search of some of the 17,000 animals including Arabian Oryx, ostriches, giraffes, hyenas and cheetahs.

If you are still planning your Abu Dhabi itinerary and accommodation, you can actually stay on Sir Bani Yas Island in 5-star accommodation !

This is definitely one of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi and the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi, especially as a family!

25. Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey

This is one of the Abu Dhabi things to do I missed and I’m really gutted about it so please try and do it for me!

Take a 90-minute boat ride on a traditional pearling dhow boat to learn about the history of pearling and how this contributed to the growth of the UAE.

It’s a lovely experience where you get to sit on Arabian cushions and try Arabic coffee and dates with your guide.

The trip leaves from the Anantara Eastern Mangroves Abu Dhabi Hotel which is a beautiful hotel and sight to see itself!

26. Speedboat Tour around Mangrove National Park

If kayaking isn’t your thing as mentioned earlier in this list of things to do in Abu Dhabi and you want some adrenaline, check out this self-drive speedboat tour around Mangrove National Park !

What’s even more unique about this Abu Dhabi activity is that you’ll pass by the flamingo sanctuary , stop in the mangroves and get to see what the full speed of your Rhino Rider speedboat is! This is definitely one of the fun things to do in Abu Dhabi!

27. Etihad Modern Art Gallery

If you enjoy art and art galleries then the Etihad Modern Art Gallery must be on your list of places to visit in Abu Dhabi for art.

This is a unique art gallery with modern art by local and international artists.

28. Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

You may think that wetlands and the desert landscape of Abu Dhabi don’t go together and neither does it go with the city landscape but there are wetlands in Abu Dhabi!

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve was once a coastal salt flat but it has now flourished into natural and man-made lake where many species can flourish, including flamingos !

There are 2 self-guided walking trails (1.5 kilometres or 3 kilometres) which are free but there are no toilet or food facilities so come prepared for this and enjoy the serenity!

29. Al Wathba Salt Lake

If you’ve been searching photos of Abu Dhabi on Instagram, you might have seen some photos with bright green water and people posing by them, these are the salt lakes in Abu Dhabi also known as long Salt lakes .

They are man-made lakes on either side of a road filled with green water and encrusted by salt which has also formed into circles in places giving it even more of an interesting look.

You will need your own transport to get here and it might be on the tricker side to find. Of course, please do be respectful as this is not a designated tourist attraction in Abu Dhabi so there is no one to clean up after you.

30. Abu Dhabi Aquarium

Abu Dhabi Aquarium is a great place to visit with kids and a great indoor activity in Abu Dhabi and because this is the UAE you know this is going to be one of the best and most immersive aquariums you’ll go to!

31. Wahat Al Karama

Wahat Al Karama is a tribute that honours the Emirati martyrs who sacrificed their lives in service of their country and a lovely memorial to see in the city.

It is located opposite the Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque and if you are wondering where and how people often get an amazing shot of the mosque with water in front and often with them stood or sat down with the whole mosque in front of them?? That’s here!

32. Marsa Mina Food Trucks

The weather in the evening in Abu Dhabi can be lovely and what better way to enjoy it than choosing food from a huge range of food trucks at Marsa Mina!

Actually, a lot more is on offer at Marsa Mina! It’s a maritime-themed waterfront destination open all day serving family-friendly dishes in various food trucks and there are shops and shows around to keep everyone entertained.

If you are stuck for something to do, searching whats on at Marsa Mina is a great way to find out things to do in Abu Dhabi today!

33. Founders Memorial

The Founders Memorial is one of the new Abu Dhabi attractions that only opened in 2018 . It is a cultural attraction to celebrate the life and values of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan , the founder of the UAE and also known as the Father of the Nation.

It only requires a quick visit on your itinerary for Abu Dhabi and is best explored with the Qasr AlWatan Emirates Palace or a Corniche walk because it is close to all of these.

The main thing to see is a piece of artwork featuring a three-dimensional portrait of Sheikh Zayed .

On first appearance, it’s hard to work out its significance but I went into the small founders memorial museum and paid a small fee to watch a video on its creation of it where I realised that 1,327 geometric shapes create a constellation that looks like Sheikh Zayed’s head and when you can see this in the artwork after, it’s pretty impressive.

At night it lights up so that’s a good time to visit and one of the good things to do in Abu Dhabi at night and there are a few gardens surrounding to relax in.

34. The Old Souk

It’s always great to visit a souk in Middle Eastern countries on holiday and despite how modern Abu Dhabi is, there is still the chance to visit a traditional souk.

The Old Souk in Abu Dhabi is the oldest market in Abu Dhabi and is great to visit if you’re looking for Arabic spices, jewellery or even home decor bits but it’s equally great to visit even if you are just window shopping.

35. The Gold Souk

Located in Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre but also on Google Maps as Gold Souk Abu Dhabi is… the old souk in Abu Dhabi!

This is not a traditional market as you might expect, for that, you have to visit the Old Souk which is in a different part of the city, it’s inside a fairly modern shopping mall and there are many individual stores within here.

If you are looking for some Gold you can browse the shop windows easily before going in and it does have a less intimidating feeling than perhaps a traditional market does where you’re sometimes not sure if you’re being ripped off or not.

However, if you’re not in the market for gold, there’s no point in adding this to your Abu Dhabi sightseeing plan.

How to get the best flights??

I use Skyscanner to book all of my flights! I’m a huge fan of Skyscanner because I love how easy it is to compare different destinations and different dates for the best price and route!

For example, I type in ‘everywhere’ in the destination if I have fixed dates and want to find the best flights on those dates on Skyscanner.

And if I have a set destination I’ll look at the ‘month view’ to check the cheapest days to fly in that month!

36. Walk along The Corniche

The Middle East loves a corniche. This is a long stretch of path than runs down the water’s edge where lots of people come together to have picnics, eat, take their kids to the playgrounds, and walk and run.

Usually, the corniche comes alive at night when the temperature is cooler and I definitely recommend taking a late-night walk along here, it’s a great way to get a feel for local life as lots of locals will be there too.

I walked along here at about 10:00. pm on my own and felt totally safe too.

37. Activities on Hudayriyat Island

What’s incredible about Abu Dhabi is the range of areas and places to go in Abu Dhabi. Hudayriyat Island is one of those areas.

It’s connected to the main island of Abu Dhabi by a bridge so it’s easy to get there. There are a range of sports activities available like a bike park, skate park, cycling track, tennis courts, beach for swimming and even an obstacle course.

So get your sportswear on, head over here and see what you can do! This is definitely one of the great places to visit in Abu Dhabi with kids and as a family as there is plenty to keep them busy!

Abu Dhabi Day Trips:

Abu Dhabi is a great base to see more of the UAE from, here are some day trips from Abu Dhabi you can do and add to your Abu Dhabi itinerary!

I did a day trip to Al-Ain from Abu Dhabi which I absolutely loved and really recommend.

Al-Ain is nearly 2 hours from Abu Dhabi City but it is still in the Abu Dhabi Emirate even though it’s so close to the Oman border!

In one day, I visited Al-Ain Oasis which is an Oasis of Palm Grove trees and Al-Ain Palace Museum which was once the home of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who lived here until the ’60s, Al Jahili Fort and Qasr AlMuwaiji .

I find the growth of the UAE fascinating but apart from Qasr AlHosn in Abu Dhabi city, it is hard to see what Abu Dhabi and the UAE looked like before this and it really wasn’t that long ago.

So to see Al-Ain Palace which is very basic for a Palace in an old Arabic mud building design and thinking that the founding Father of the UAE lived here with his family until the ’60s is really interesting and eye-opening to see and really made me appreciate the city of Abu Dhabi much more afterwards.

For this day trip from Abu Dhabi, I recommend hiring a driver who will take you there, take you from attraction to attraction and bring you home. Give yourself from about 9:00 am to 17:00 – 18:00 to do the full day trip.

39. Telal Resort Al-Ain

Telal Resort is a luxury boutique resort in the stunning and unique oasis outside of Al-Ain.

The accommodation features poolside villas and if you haven’t planned your whole Abu Dhabi itinerary yet, I’d recommend checking this out and seeing if you can fit in a night’s stay here .

However, it’s also great as a day trip from Abu Dhabi because you can book one of their one-day heritage and cultural packages where you will be welcomed to their own Heritage Village in the morning with Arabic Coffee, dates and local sweats followed by a tour of the Heritage Village , then you can go camel or horse riding , try on traditional clothes , take a wildlife safari and end your day with an Arabic dinner before heading back to Abu Dhabi.

This is perfect for those who want an adventure day out in Abu Dhabi in the desert but want everything organised, a high level of service and a bit of luxury.

Yes, a day trip to Dubai from Abu Dhabi is possible as they are only 1.5 hours apart by car.

Getting from Abu Dhabi to Dubai via public transport is limited but you can get a taxi or hire a car and drive yourself.

I think Abu Dhabi is a great place to visit if you have already been to Dubai and want to get a different feel from the UAE and experience more UAE attractions but perhaps you want to pop back for a dose of Dubai life which you can do from Abu Dhabi.

World Wildlife Day is commemorated on 3 March of each year to raise awareness about endangered animals and plants, while on the 21 March, the United Nations will mark International Day of Forests, which promotes the importance of forests and trees in our lives. These two events remind us that we – nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts alike – must take steps to protect these precious resources.

You don’t need to travel far to appreciate and learn more about these bounties of nature; being an archipelago made up of over 200 islands, Abu Dhabi is teeming with wildlife and mangrove forests! Head over to Saadiyat Island and discover free-roaming animals, including the Arabian gazelles and the critically endangered Hawksbill turtles that use the island as nesting ground. Dolphins are a regular sight frolicking in the bay as well.

Abu Dhabi also has the Middle East’s first-ever marine conservation centre , Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue, which comes in line with the UAE’s declaration of 2023 as the Year of Sustainability. Located on Yas Island, Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue is a key contributor to marine-life conservation in the region.

For families, Emirates Park Zoo and Al Ain Zoo, with the majestic Jebel Hafit mountain in the background, are popular destinations. The zoos are home to hundreds of animals, including endangered species such as the Arabian Oryx. Other stunning nature reserves are Sir Bani Yas Island, which is home to many species such as cheetahs, giraffes and oryx, and also hosts important archaeological sites, including a 1,400-year-old Christian monastery, and Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, a blend of natural and manmade lakes where you can find different thriving species, including the island’s chief resident, the Greater Flamingo.

And don’t forget Mangrove National Park, a biodiversity hotspot that makes up about 75 per cent of the UAE’s total mangrove forest area. Explore the mangroves up close on a kayak, and don’t be surprised to see flamingos, herons and other bird or plant species. Jubail Mangrove Park is equally stunning, which is perfect for birdwatchers and nature lovers in search of the best Instagrammable hotspots.

The next two weeks are going to be very busy for Abu Dhabi’s music scene with two major festivals hitting the UAE capital one after the other. On 4-5 March, the biggest EDM music festival ULTRA will finally land in the Middle East , bringing the world’s best EDM DJs to Yas Island ’s open-air Etihad Park for two days of dancing and grooving tunes.

Catch world-class pianists and performing artists at NYUAD

Performing art lovers, we also have something special for you. For the entire month of March, the Arts Center at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has lined up a series of exhibitions starting with the UAE premiere of the Balimaya Project on 3 March at The Red Theater, where UAE-based Indian vocalist, songwriter, and performing artist Shilpa Ananth will perform an opening set. Cinema enthusiasts can indulge in a selection of free-to-watch Arab short films handpicked by Black Box Cinema to be shown at The Blue Hall on 13 March.

Also catch the performances of international star pianist Bruce Liu, Van Cliburn International Piano Competition gold medallist Haochen Zhang and 16-year-old British-Chinese violin prodigy Leia Zhu.

NYUAD Art Gallery is also hosting a spring exhibition titled “the only constant” , which is inspired by the work of legendary artist Tarek Al-Ghoussein and features other artists such as Patty Chang, Gil Heitor Cortesão, Sharon Lockhart, Taus Makhacheva, Haroon Mirza, Clifford Ross, Thomas Struth, and Vivek Vilasini. Featuring 27 different works, the exhibition is curated by the Executive Director of The NYUAD Art Gallery and University Chief Curator, Maya Allison. The winter markets are among the best ways to embrace the cooler weather and soak up the festive atmosphere in the capital. Discover a range of seasonal delights, traditional food and drinks, handmade crafts and gifts ideas.

For starters, check out Park Market at Umm Al Emarat Park , which features vendors and SMEs, local businesses and a place where you can pick up the very best in fresh and organic produce, resin art candles, Abayas, Turkish fashion, antiques, crocheted items, silver accessories, customised hats and bags, skin care products, and perfume. There are also nightly outdoor film screenings at 6.30pm and 8.30pm at the Park’s Children Garden. The market is open Friday and Saturday, 4pm to 11pm, until 18 March only.

The Ripe Market at Al Maryah Island , meanwhile, is a glorious outdoor destination with fantastic views of the sea. Guests can peruse through local business stalls, featuring everything from local organic fruits and vegetables from their own farms and other local farmers. The Ripe Market is open Friday and Saturday, 3pm until 10pm, until April.

And how could we miss the new Saturday Market in Al Ain Oasis , which includes a farmer’s market, live entertainment and lots of activities. One thing unique about this market is that the vendors change weekly, so there is always something new to discover.

The Saturday Market is open until 25 March, 3pm to midnight. Entry fees are AED 20 for ages 12 and up, AED 10 for children ages three to 11 and. Children aged two and under and people of determination enter free of charge.

Sports action

Heating up in the capital this month

For all you sports buffs, there are plenty of sports action happening across the capital. Head over to the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi, and catch the season-ending events happening this month, including the exciting 100km ride for the Sheikh Zayed bin Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Endurance Cup for Private Owners CEN on 17 March, and the Abu Dhabi Festival Open Endurance Cup CEN 120 km ride on 19 March.

The Jr. NBA Abu Dhabi League is also heating up in the capital, with the boys and girls leagues drawing closer to an exciting finale on 12 March.

For Abu Dhabi’s hippophiles, here’s your last chance to catch the very best equestrians in the capital as the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Festival winds down with the Al Forsan International Showjumping Cup & UAE Young Horse Final on 2-5 March at Al Forsan International Sports Resort . Plus, the venue also hosts horse-riding classes with the Al Forsan Equestrian Academy for levels F1 to FJ8. More than an equine retreat, Al Forsan International Sports Resort also offers water sports on an inflatable and for AED 35 per hour and AED 150 with wakeboarding. And here’s one for all the triathlon fans out there: World Triathlon Championship Series Abu Dhabi , which is part of the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series, returns to the capital for the eighth time on 3-4 March. This is your chance to catch the best athletes from across the world compete head-to-head at Yas Marina Circuit for the triathlon’s most prestigious race series. Thousands of age-group and junior athletes from the UAE, the GCC and beyond will join the world’s best triathletes for this landmark event.

For non-competitors, head out to the Athlete Village and Expo, centred in the F1 pit lanes, which will be jam-packed with family-friendly entertainment, retail booths, delicious food and beverage, and viewing platforms to watch your favourite triathletes compete. Calling all shutterbugs: Head to the Photography Studio at Manarat Al Saadiyat to catch The Shot , where you can catch some of the earliest photography techniques and images produced from the early 1800s, including works by renowned, pioneering photographers. The exhibition also highlights how modern-day techniques can enhance such photos with the artistic use of light and shadow – especially for black and white photos. Happening for the first time in the Middle East, the new exhibition will run until 24 April.

An independent platform dedicated to supporting emerging creative practices, 421 has a new line-up for its “Winter 2023 Program: RE/COLLECT THIS” , which will run in tandem with new exhibitions that support emerging artists from the region. The season also includes over 20 artist-led workshops, talks and special events that explore contemporary modes of memory-making. Located in Al Ain’s Al Hiya district, wandering through the lovely garden truly feels like walking through a dream with a rainbow of colours and refreshing scents filling the air – this garden is a true masterpiece of nature. Visiting hours are 3pm to 7pm daily, with a AED 15 entry fee. The secret garden is, well, not so easy to find, so we recommend you put Mohammed Al-Hosani Farm into Google Maps.

The Abrahamic Family House is the newest destination in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District that features a mosque, a church and a synagogue. The complex reflects Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a melting pot of diverse cultures, with the country working towards creating a safe secular space for all to practice their faith freely. You Can’t Miss This City-Wide Immersive Light Exhibition in Abu Dhabi

Art season in the region has leveled up in excitement with Abu Dhabi currently hosting a round of brilliant installations. As part of the Abu Dhabi Public Art Exhibition, Manar Abu Dhabi (meaning lighthouse in Arabic) aims to transform the landscape of the capital with a light exhibition running until January 30, 2024.

The inaugural edition of Manar Abu Dhabi dubbed ‘Grounding Light’ is co-curated by Reem Fadda, director of Abu Dhabi Culture Programming and Cultural Foundation, and artistic director of Public Art Abu Dhabi, and Alia Zaal Lootah, curator Public Art. Over 35 site-specific light sculptures, projections, and artworks have been created by local and international artists, to help offer an immersive, multi-sensory experience while celebrating the emirate’s natural beauty.

Abu Dhabi will host the International Book Fair Education Program 2023 from May 22 nd to 28 th .

Below we will let you know all details about the event:

Abu Dhabi International Book Fair will take place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre .

During the book fair, the Emirates Literature Foundation will organize an exciting mix of educational and cultural sessions that will last for 45 to 50 minutes each .

Each session will be followed by a book signing and the students will have the opportunity to purchase the authors' books either before or after the session.

All sessions are free to attend and you can register from here .

You will find here some of the sessions’ titles that will take place at the book fair:

Hello mr. gum.

Location: Stage One

Age: 7+

The multi award-winning children’s author Andy Stanton will tell us about the Mr. Gum, the hero of the hilariously anarchic rhyming story, who hates everyone and lives in a disgusting tip of a house.

Stanton will give us an insight into Mr. Gum’s childhood and how he became a writer.

The session will take place on May 22 nd from 10:30am to 11:30am.

Exhaust Some Energy!

Age: 6+

Exhaust Some Energy! by Colette Barr and Leona Collins who will tell us how we can help make our world a cleaner place in their fun filled, inspiring session full of laughs, prizes and awesome energy.

The session will take place on May 22 nd from 12pm to 13pm.

Junior Spotlight

Location: Education Stage

Age: All Ages

Children who are interested to perform in one of the fair’s Junior Spotlight sessions can register their school’s interest and the education team will be in contact to confirm the success of students’ performance and other details.

Teachers and parents can also book to attend the performance as an audience.

This session will take place from 16pm to 17pm during all days of the book fair.

Citrus the Smoothie Sloth

Location: Stage Two

Ebtisam Al-Beiti will read Citrus the Smoothie Sloth in an interactive and fun way for young children, encouraging them to be more adventurous in trying new tastes.

The session will take place on the second day of the book fair from 9am to 10am.

Sisters of the Lost Marsh

Age: 12+

The award-winning children’s author Lucy Strange will be sharing the inspiration behind this eerie, twisty tale and her other books for readers, including ancient curses, folklore, poetry, art and dramatic British landscapes.

The session will take place on the second day of the book fair from 9:30am to 10:30am.

Together We Can Change the World

Beverly Jatwani will highlight the issue of endangered animals in an accessible way; in each story a child forms a connection with a different animal, spread across the seven continents.

Jatwani is the co-founder of the Middle East’s first green children’s nursery, and to then write a series of children’s books that capture the innate love and affinity that children have with Mother Earth.

The session will take place on the second day of the book fair from 11am to 12pm.

Don’t Ask the Dragon

Don’t Ask the Dragon is by the British Academy Film Awards-nominated poet, playwright, memoirist, performer and broadcaster Lemn Sissay and the illustrator, street artist and visual development UK artist Greg Stobbs .

During this session you will enjoy the hero Alem, who wants somewhere to celebrate his birthday – but where should he go? Maybe the bear, the fox, the tree frog or the bulldog.

But what about the dragon … Should Alem ask him, or might he be just too scary?

The session will take place on the third day of the book fair from 9am to 10pm.

The Wintrish Girl

Age: 8+

The Australian author Join Melanie La’Brooy will tell us what inspired her to create this brand new series of gripping adventures about a girl who sometimes doesn’t quite know where she fits into the world.

The session will take place on the third day of the book fair from 11am to 12pm.

Rebel of the Sands

Age: 14+

The Canadian fantasy fiction author Alwyn Hamilton will tell us the story of the sixteen-year-old Amani Al’Hiza who has the elemental power to control the sands of the desert.

The session will take place on the third day of the book fair from 12pm to 13pm.

Hop Lola Hop

The multilingual journalist and the author of the Hop Lola Hop series Kathy Urban will amaze us with a story of the adventurous bunny Lola who loves to hop, hop, hop and join her best friend Ella on their adventures, but sometimes she hops a little too far.

The session will take place on the fourth day of the book fair from 9am to 10am.

Book-Busting

Age: 10+

The award-winning author Ali Sparkes will give the audience a funny and interactive session, with lots of comedy, perfect for anyone who loves an exciting read.

A Twiggy Harmful Thingy

Author Elif Yonat Toğay will read her story A Twiggy Harmful Thing during a funny and engaging session that will shed light on the harmful effects of plastic on our planet, and how little changes in our daily lives can make a big difference.

The session will take place on the fourth day of the book fair from 9:30am to 10:30am.

Voices of Future Generations: How to make the world a better place from our child authors

Two young authors will tell us their passion for creating a better world to heart by writing winning stories inspired by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. 

Any child who could make his/her vision for the future into an adventure story can enter the  Voices of Future Generations competition .

The winning stories of Voices of Future Generations for the Middle East Region are now available for all to read in a  beautifully produced collection  in Arabic and English, illustrated by UAE-based artists.

The session will take place on the fourth day of the book fair from 10:30am to 11:30am.

Children of the Quicksands

Efua will take us on a mystical journey to Nigeria, weaving together modern life and Nigerian folklore in her richly imagined magical realist adventures Children of the Quicksands and The House of Shells.

The session will take place on the fourth day of the book fair from 12pm to 13pm.
