Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Headphones Review

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Picture

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a poor mono Bluetooth headset for phone calls. It's comfortable, has a good app with many customization options, and lasts nearly eight hours off a single charge, which should easily get you through a full workday. Unfortunately, its overall microphone performance is very disappointing, and while on phone calls, your voice sounds unnatural, thin, and lacking in detail. Unlike the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset , which has excellent noise handling, the Voyager Legend's mic has a tough time separating your voice in louder environments, and your voice may get lost completely.

Our Verdict

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a sub-par mono Bluetooth headset for mixed usage. It's designed primarily for phone calls and isn't a good choice for listening to music due to its single-bud design and very un-balanced sound profile with practically no bass. Its Bluetooth-only connectivity and poor overall mic performance also make it a bad choice for gaming. On the bright side, it's comfortable enough to wear for long periods and lasts nearly eight hours off a single charge, making it somewhat suitable for taking phone calls in the office.

  • Comfortable fit that can be used on either ear.
  • Very stable design.
  • Good app with tons of customization options for phone calls.
  • Disappointing microphone recording quality.
  • Microphone has difficult time separating speech from background noise.
  • Sound profile is slightly shrill and piercing with some voices.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend isn't designed for listening to music. It's a mono headset with a very unbalanced sound profile that's severely lacking in bass.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is sub-par for commuting or travel. It can be helpful if you make many phone calls while traveling or commuting, but it isn't the best choice due to its disappointing mic performance. It also blocks out practically no background noise, though this is by design, so you can hear yourself while speaking on the phone.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a great choice for sports and fitness. Because of its ear-hook design, it feels very stable and shouldn't fall off during strenuous workouts. It blocks practically no background noise, which is great if you run outdoor and like to stay aware of your surroundings. If you like to make phone calls while jogging, it can be a good choice. Unfortunately, it has poor overall microphone performance.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a disappointing choice for use in the office. It leaks a fair amount of audio, so your coworkers will likely hear whoever you're speaking to. It also blocks no background noise by design and has a disappointing overall microphone performance. On the bright side, its 7.8-hour battery should last you through an entire workday of phone calls, and it has a standby feature to help conserve the battery even more.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend isn't recommended for wireless gaming. Since it's Bluetooth-only, you can't connect it to any modern console, and when connected to a Bluetooth-enabled PC, its high latency and poor microphone performance is less than ideal.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a Bluetooth-only headset, and you can't use it wired.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a bad Bluetooth headset for phone calls. It's comfortable enough to wear for extended periods, has a ton of customization options, feels very stable in the ear, and lasts nearly eight hours off a single charge, which is good. Unfortunately, when using the microphone, your voice sounds unnatural, thin, and difficult to understand. Its boom microphone also has a hard time separating your voice from background noise, so even in moderately noisy environments, it's difficult to hear you. Finally, while the sound profile is extremely well-balanced in the mid-range, where most vocals sit, some higher-pitched voices sound shrill and painful.

Compared To Other Headphones

Comparison picture

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a bad mono Bluetooth headset that doesn't perform nearly as well for phone calls as the newer  Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset . While both have almost identical designs, the microphone on the Voyager Legend performs much worse overall. The recording quality of the mic is noticeably lower, and it does a much worse job at handling background noise.

Check out our recommendations for the  best Bluetooth headsets for phone calls , or if you want something better-suited for gaming, the  best wireless gaming headsets .

The Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset is a much worse mono headset for phone calls than the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset . Both headsets share almost the same design and feel equally comfortable, well-built, and stable, except the 5200 charges via Micro-USB while the Legend uses a proprietary magnetic charging clip. The 5200 has a better-balanced sound profile for phone calls, resulting in less piercing and painful voices. It also has a much better microphone that makes your voice sound slightly more natural and does a significantly better job of separating your voice from background noises. On the other hand, the Voyager Legend has longer battery life.

The Jabra Talk 45 Bluetooth Headset is better for phone calls than the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset. The Plantronics is more comfortable, better-built, and it has more controls. However, it leaks a lot more noise than the Jabra. The Jabra's boom microphone also has a better recording quality and noise handling performance, so it makes your voice clearer to whoever's on the other end of the line.

The BlueParrott B450-XT Headset is a better headset for making phone calls than the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset. The BlueParrott has a more balanced sound profile and its boom microphone has a significantly better overall performance. Its continuous battery life is longer, it has NFC pairing, and its latency across PC, iOS, and Android is lower too, although some apps and devices seem to compensate for lag differently. However, the Plantronics is significantly more comfortable. As it's a mono in-ear, it's more portable and stable.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset is better for phone calls than the Plantronics Voyager 3200 Bluetooth Headset . The Legend has a more comfortable and stable fit and is also better-built. However, the 3200 has a better-balanced treble range, so voices and sibilants sound more clear and detailed.

While the Astro A40 TR Headset + MixAmp Pro 2017 and the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset both have a boom mic and have a focus on speech, they're designed for different uses. The Astro is a better choice if you want a gaming headset that will deliver more immersive stereo sound while you play your games and can easily be plugged into your gaming console. On the other hand, the Voyager Legend is a Bluetooth Headset that's designed for making phone calls from a mobile device, and its mono earbud won't help pull you into a game like the Astro. It's also Bluetooth-only, so it won't work with PS4 or Xbox One.

The Jabra Steel Bluetooth Headset is slightly better for phone calls than the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset. The Jabra leaks much less audio, has a significantly better recording quality, and does a better job at separating your voice from background noises. On the other hand, the Plantronics is more comfortable, has better controls, looks and feels more premium, has a better-balanced sound profile for phone calls, lasts longer off a single charge, and has a much better app with a ton of customization options.

The Mpow EM12 Wireless Earphone is a better mono headset for phone calls than the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset. The Mpow's microphone has a better recording quality, and the headset leaks much less audio. On the other hand, the Plantronics is more comfortable, has much better controls, a significantly longer battery, and a dedicated companion app with many customization options.

The TaoTronics SoundLiberty 79 Truly Wireless and the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset are wireless earbuds designed for very different uses. While the TaoTronics are truly wireless in-ears with a well-balanced sound profile designed for listening to music, the Plantronics is a mono Bluetooth headset for making phone calls while in the office or driving. Since the TaoTronics has a built-in microphone, it can be used for phone calls as well, but isn't designed for this, and the microphone on the Voyager performs much better.

Test Results

perceptual testing image

The Plantronics Voyager Legend looks almost identical to the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset . Both headsets are primarily matte black, but the Legend's thin boom microphone is almost entirely silver. It has a very straightforward and professional look.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Comfort Picture

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is quite comfortable. Its fit and design are identical to the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset , and it comes with three sizes of silicone tips, which don't enter deeply into the ear canal. It also comes with two sizes of cloth covers for the earbuds, which may be more comfortable for some people. While the ear-hook is flexible and doesn't put too much pressure on your ear, it may start to cause some slight fatigue or discomfort after a couple of hours. Luckily, you can easily swivel the mic around and switch ears throughout the day to reduce discomfort.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Controls Picture

The controls of this headset are decent overall and are almost identical to the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset , except that the volume buttons are in a slightly different place. The buttons are designed for call controls and give you a good amount of options, including the ability to trigger your phone's voice assistant.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Portability Picture

This headset is very portable. It can fold into a compact position and should be able to fit into most pockets. If you want something even more portable, check out the Mpow EM12 Wireless Earphone .

This headset doesn't come with a carrying case, though you can purchase a charging case separately.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Build Quality Picture

The Plantronics Voyager Legend's build quality is good. It looks and feels almost identical to the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset and should be able to withstand a few accidental drops and bumps without sustaining too much damage. The ear-hook is flexible, and the headset looks fairly premium overall.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Stability Picture

The Plantronics Voyager Legend feels very stable thanks to its ear-hook design. Unlike the Plantronics Voyager 3200 Bluetooth Headset , it stays in place during moderately intense workouts, which is good if you make phone calls while jogging.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Frequency Response

The Plantronics Voyager Legend's sound profile isn't the most balanced and accurate, but it's fairly well-tuned for voices and speech. It's very lacking in bass, but most voices sound present, clear, and detailed. Unfortunately, some higher-pitched voices may be slightly harsh and piercing.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Consistency L

The frequency response consistency is great. Provided you achieve a proper fit with the included tips, you should experience similar bass and treble response every time you use it.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Raw FR L

The bass accuracy is terrible. There's practically no low-bass or mid-bass, meaning music will have no thump, rumble, or punch. That said, as this headset is designed for phone calls and not listening to music, it shouldn't be too noticeable, especially since high-bass, which is responsible for giving low-frequency voices warmth, is less recessed than the rest of the ranges.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Mid

The Plantronics Voyager Legend's mid accuracy is superb. The entire range is very well-balanced and accurate, without much over or under-emphasis. Since this range is where most voices sit, this results in clear and full voices that don't sound honky, thin, or weak.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Treble

The Plantronics Voyager Legend's treble accuracy is sub-par. Unlike the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset , which has very well-balanced low-treble, this range is quite over-emphasized on the Voyager Legend. Unfortunately, this will make some higher-pitched voices sound shrill and harsh. The rest of the ranges are uneven as well. Some mid-treble sounds are dull and lispy, while others sound piercing and painful. The majority of high-treble is very recessed, which causes some sounds to be closed-up and lifeless, though most voices don't reach these higher frequencies.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Peaks/Dips Graph

The peaks and dips performance is sub-par. The large peak across high-bass and low-mid causes lower-frequency voices to appear boomy and muddy concerning the very recessed low-bass range. The dip in mid-treble that falls between the peak in low-treble and the mid to high-treble makes some higher-frequencies sound sharp and piercing, while others will be dull and lifeless. Overall, while the entire sound profile is uneven, this is most noticeable with music and won't be as noticeable during phone calls, except for the peak in low-treble, which may cause some parts of speech to be sharp and piercing.

Because this headset is mono, there's no stereo imaging.

Like with most in-ears, the passive soundstage of this headset is poor. This is because properly activating the resonances of the pinna (the outer ear) is one of the important factors in creating an out-of-head and speaker-like soundstage. Since in-ears and earbuds completely bypass the pinna, their soundstage tends to be perceived as small and located inside the listener's head. Because of the earbud design that doesn't enter your ear canal as deep as in-ears, audio sounds very open.

This headset doesn't have any virtual soundstage features.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Weighted Harmonic Distortion

The weighted harmonic distortion is decent. While there's some distortion present, it likely won't be too noticeable for most people while on phone calls.

These are the settings used to test this headset. Our results are only valid when listening using these settings.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Noise Isolation

This headset isolates practically no background noise. This is likely by design, as while on phone calls, it helps to hear your voice when speaking. This is also because the earbud rests inside the ear as opposed to going deep into the ear canal like typical in-ear headphones.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Leakage

The Plantronics Voyager Legend's leakage performance is only okay. Unfortunately, it leaks a bit more audio than the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset , and if you work in an open office, coworkers nearby will likely hear the person you're speaking to.

This headset has a boom microphone that can swivel, meaning you can use the headset in either ear.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Microphone Frequency Response

The recording quality of the Plantronics Voyager Legend's microphone is poor. It's worse than the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset , the Jabra Talk 45 Bluetooth Headset , or the Jabra Steel Bluetooth Headset , and your voice sounds distorted, unnatural, and thin.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset SpNR

The microphone's noise handling is sub-par. Even in only moderately noisy environments, the person you're speaking to will have a hard time hearing you. On the bright side, unlike headphones with an integrated mic, the boom microphone prevents your voice from getting completely drowned out. If you want a Bluetooth headset with better noise handling, check out the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset or the BlueParrott B450-XT Headset .

The Plantronics Voyager Legend's overall battery performance is mediocre. It lasts nearly eight hours off a single charge, which should be more than long enough to get you through an entire work day's worth of phone calls. It also has a standby mode to help conserve battery life between calls. Unfortunately, it uses a proprietary magnetic charging cable, which is a pain if you forget or misplace it.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset App Picture

The dedicated companion app is good. While it includes all the same functionality as the one for the Plantronics Voyager 5200 Bluetooth Headset , the Voyager Legend doesn't support 'Tile' to track the headset in case you misplace it. Other than that, it gives you a ton of customization options specific to phone calls like the ability to configure the sensors in the headset to automatically answer or reject a phone call while you're wearing the headset.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a Bluetooth 3.0 headset that supports multi-device pairing so you can easily switch between your PC and phone, which is convenient. Likely because this headset uses a much older version of Bluetooth, it has high latency on all devices while watching YouTube videos. It's worth noting that apps seem to compensate for this differently, so your mileage may vary.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a Bluetooth-only headset.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset Cable Picture

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a Bluetooth-only headset that you can't use wired. It comes with a proprietary magnetic charging cable and a USB wall plug but has no other inputs.

This headset is Bluetooth-only and isn't compatible with PS4. It should work with any Bluetooth-enabled PC.

This headset is Bluetooth-only and isn't compatible with Xbox One.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend we tested doesn't come with a dock or base. While you can buy a docking cradle separately, we haven't tested it.

  • Controls/Connectivity
  • Competition
  • Final Verdict

We purchased the Plantronics Voyager Legend so our expert reviewer could thoroughly test and assess it. Keep reading for our full product review.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a middle-of-the-road option that's a solid option for average users. When Plantronics developed this Bluetooth headset, they did so with convenience and connectivity in mind, folding in some interesting sensor functionality, a degree of moisture-resistance, and even voice assistance integration.

The fit in a user’s ear and the sound quality inherent with that loose fit do leave a bit to be desired, so don’t look to these if you intend to place calls in excessively noisy settings. But if you want a moderately priced Bluetooth headset with tons of convenience and solid voice clarity, then this could be a great option.

Design: Subtle and sleek with a bulky battery housing

The look of most of Plantronics more “active” Bluetooth headsets is largely the same: a grill-adorned boom mic coming from a cylindrical driver housing, a clear silicone eartip, and a bulky behind-the-ear housing that contains most of the inner workings, including the battery. This design is somewhat intentional, as it puts a lot of the components behind your ear, and ostensibly out of sight, but that fact does have some ramifications when it comes to comfort (we’ll get to that in a second).

The boom mic itself measures just under 3 inches from the ear piece, and that bulky behind-the-ear component is about 2-inches long and .5-inches thick. The boom does swivel to fold up alongside the over-ear component, leaving a smaller footprint both when storing and wearing the headset. And with a mostly black design and a silver, perforated grill along the boom, this is actually our favorite Plantronics design (the more expensive 5200 has red accents that aren’t exactly subtle).

Comfort: An awkward fit with some bulk behind the ear

One of the biggest negatives for the Voyager Legend is the stability of fit. That’s odd, because Plantronics was clearly going for a bit of a sporty design with this headset, which implies that it would be a very firm fit with a good amount of comfort, but because of some design choices, that isn’t the case.

First, a point on the eartip—what should be the tightest, most ergonomic part, is actually a little awkward. The eartip is made of clear silicone, but it’s a little bit more rigid than the silicone you typically find in sporty earbuds. As such, it doesn’t mold to your ear canal as well, and also doesn’t create the firmest seal.

Impressive connectivity and sensor functionality, alongside really crisp call clarity.

The standard set is about .5-inches in diameter, and Plantronics does include two other silicone tips in the box (one set is slightly bigger, and the other slightly smaller). While most earbuds reward you for finding the right size, it’s almost imperative with the Voyager Legend that you find your ideal fit. We also found it more comfortable to wrap the silicone tips in the included foam black coverings, even though we anticipate this material wearing down over time.

The other awkward part of the fit here is the behind-the-ear section. As mentioned, it seems like a bulk of the battery and connectivity components are inside this arm. It’s quite thick and bulky as a result, which is fine from a looks perspective when it’s tucked behind your ear, but we found that this added some uncomfortable weight pulling backwards, which exacerbated the loose fit. Overall, if you can get used to the earpiece floating in your ear, rather than resting nicely, then this will probably work for you, but we think Plantronics could have done a bit better.

Durability and Build Quality: Sturdy, light, and mostly reliable

As far as Bluetooth headsets go, the construction here is mostly solid. The whole unit is encased in a soft, matte rubber surfacing, which makes it both pleasant on the ear and also flexible. This softness works in its favor, as it isn’t rigid enough to snap. There is one swiveling rigid part—the boom mic—and though we do recommend being careful when storing and pivoting it, it feels pretty substantial.

There isn’t an advertised IP rating for these, meaning we can’t offer you any definitive levels of water or dust resistance, but Plantronics does state that there’s a P2i nano coating that allows the headset to resist moisture and sweat. This headset will cover you for most of your needs, even if you move and sweat a lot, but we don’t recommend using these in heavy downpour, or submerging them in water.

The sound quality on these was serviceable, providing a great level of detail without any substantial amount of low end.

Call Quality: Crisp and serviceable without some depth

We spent a few days with this headset, testing its call capabilities between our offices spaces, on the street, and in our home. The sound quality on these was serviceable, providing a great level of detail without any substantial amount of low end. This lack of low end could have largely been due to the lack of seal in our ear, but if you’re hoping to listen to any music on these, then you won’t be super impressed.

Where the headset really shines is in the microphone quality. There’s a three-mic array that aims to pick up sound and cancel noise from a variety of angles. There’s internal DSP that suppresses noise coming through the mic to ensure a good level of crispness when you’re speaking, and paired with a 20-band equalizer that adapts to the environment, the voice quality is impressive.

They’ve even included something called “side tone detection” that aims to pinpoint and suppress acoustic reverberations in your space. They’ve also built a mesh wind-guarding net underneath the microphone grill that actually serves as a windscreen, helping to reduce wind clipping. In our tests, the microphone really did shine on this device, even in particularly echo-y rooms.

Battery Life: Solid and reliable, true to the advertising

Plantronics puts the battery life at about 7 hours of talk time and 11 days of standby time. We can say that the talk time is right about 7 hours (perhaps a little shy if you use this headset in a noisy area, requiring a lot of reduction), and our useage did trend toward 11 days of standby. This is largely affected by your personal use, but we can say subjectively that the battery life was impressive and true to the claims on the box.

The interesting sensor technology and the steadfast connectivity in most of our tests serve as key selling points for this headset.

What’s more, is that it takes about 90 minutes for a full charge. There’s no quick charging function here, but that 90 minutes to a full charge is pretty impressive, even for higher dollar options. One important note is that the lithium ion battery here recharges with an included proprietary charger that locks in via a magnet. It makes it really easy to just plop the headset into the charger as it sits on your desk (it’s like a mini dock), but because this headset doesn’t use the more universal micro USB , you’ll need to make sure you have the included charger wherever you’re on the go. It’s a lack of convenience that definitely sets this headset back a bit.

Controls and Connectivity: Intuitive, flashy, and very impressive

The interesting sensor technology and the steadfast connectivity in most of our tests serve as key selling points for this headset. There are dual capacitive sensors around the ear that actually detect whether the headset is on your ear or off. This folds into the connectivity, because this actually tells your phone whether an incoming call should be routed to your headset or to the phone, without pressing any buttons. You can have this headset connected to two phones at once, and you can answer calls from either phone—in our experience, this handoff was pretty seamless.

There’s a really pronounced on/off toggle switch, as well as a slider-based volume control, and a function button that is mappable with the associated app. There’s Bluetooth 3.0 on-board, including A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, and HSP headset protocols, which means that you’ll get about 33 feet of range and plenty of compatibility with most phones. It’s a really nice package that works pretty well, though it is important to note that we ran into some slight Bluetooth interference on our first pairing. This was handily fixed when repairing fortunately.

Price: Mid-tier and mostly fair

The MSRP on the Voyager Legend headset is $99.99, which is pretty high compared with its functionality. Most of the time, you can find this headset for right around $60. This might seem like a lot for a simple phone call peripheral, but it’s actually less than many of the other premium options out there. This price point buys you impressive connectivity and sensor functionality, alongside really crisp call clarity. If you’re in the market for a Bluetooth headset, this one will last you a while.

Competition: It will cost you

Plantronics Voyager 5200: Similar in design, but more expensive than the Voyager Legend, the Plantronics Voyager 5200 gives you just a bit more in terms of premium features. If you need cleaner calls and a sturdier build, go for the 5200.

Jabra Stealth: There are a few Jabra options that could be considered competition, but in this price range with this compact build, the Jabra Stealth seems to offer an interestingly unassuming alternative. That’s if you want to shell out the extra money.

Sony MBH22 Mono Headset: From a brand like Sony, you’d expect solid reliability. But the features on the Sony MBH22 Mono Headset leave a bit to be desired. If you prefer Sony as a brand, go for it, but features put the Voyager Legend in a better class.

Take a peek at some of the other best Bluetooth headsets you can buy.

Solid performance for a mid-range price, but the fit isn't the best.

The Voyager Legend is a really solid Bluetooth headset that sits at a nice price point and gives you great call clarity. That said, there is plenty to be improved upon when it comes to the fit and comfort level.

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

The last time we looked at a Plantronics Voyager headset it was the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC v2 , and though it was pricy we were seriously impressed with the quality.

On the surface the Plantronics Voyager Legend - priced at £89.99/US$99.99 and TBC in Australia - looks a lot like its predecessor, but Plantronics has been working hard on improving an already impressive piece of kit.

In fact, in almost every respect it feels like a lot of thought and attention to detail has been paid to the new headset.

The ear piece is made of new material that fits comfortably in your ear and keeps it secure. A new sensor tells the unit when it is on your ear, so you can answer phone calls by simply attaching the Voyager Legend to your ear. This works well because it feels rather natural to hold the earpiece to your ear, much like you would do a phone.

Caller ID announces the name of the contact who's calling you, and if the earpiece is already being worn you can say "Answer" to answer the call. All of this makes the Plantronics Voyager Legend one of the best hands-free kits available, because at no time do you have to look at or handle your phone.

An extra microphone has been added to the array in the microphone arm to further increase voice quality, as well as eliminate background noise. The noise cancelling was already impressive, but the extra mic does well at keeping the speaker's voice clear even in very noisy environments.

Smaller changes to the buttons on the earpiece makes it more comfortable to use, and the inclusion of a MacBook-like magnetic charger is a great touch.

It might be a bit on the large size, but the Plantronics Voyager Legend is a comfortable and feature-packed headset.

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset review

Plantronics Voyager Legend 1

Bluetooth hands-free headsets or smart car calling features are becoming more and more necessary now that 14 states have banned hand-held cell phone use while driving, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association .  Even if your state doesn’t have a ban on hand-held cell phone use while driving, there are bans on people using them in school zones and in many states for those who are under 18 years old. The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a safer alternative to fiddling with your cell phone while driving and appears to be a highly rated headset. I was curious to see if it was all that it is touted to be.

Design & Build Quality

Plantronics Voyager Legend 4

Design-wise, the Plantronics Voyager Legend headset is not as small as other headsets out there or as fashionable. It is made of a comfortable, flexible rubber material with a rigid black plastic control panel and stainless steel windscreens covering the microphone boom that contains three microphones with active Digital Signal Processing (for noise cancellation). It is protected from damage due to moisture (e.g. sweat, rain) by P2i technology which means that a “nano-coating is applied during the manufacturing process, resulting in invisible liquid repellent properties that also makes the headset more reliable.” The eartip is a clear silicone material and comes in three sizes. To change it, you must gently push in and rotate counterclockwise to remove it. You then align the desired size tip with the slots and rotate clockwise while pushing in to lock it in place.

This headset can also be worn on either ear by rotating the microphone boom up to a vertical position, twisting the earpiece to the other side, and finally lowering the boom into the correct position.

Plantronics Voyager Legend 3

Located on the portion of the headset that fits behind your ear are the Volume Up and Down button, LED charging status light, Power button, and proprietary magnetic charging connection. Also from the above photo, you can see the Call button located at the base of the microphone boom and earpiece (at the top in this photo).

Plantronics Voyager Legend 5

The underside of the headset shows the Voice/Mute/Play/Pause button.

Plantronics Voyager Legend 6

The charging cable is quite short and only measures nine inches long. And since this is a proprietary cable with the ability to magnetically clasp onto the headset to charge, you will have to spend more money than you would on a micro USB cable when replacing it if you should lose it.

Plantronics Voyager Legend 7

When you first receive the Plantronics Voyager Legend headset, it has enough of a charge to update the firmware and pair it. The first task was to update the firmware if necessary by connecting the headset to my computer, going to www.plantronics.com/myheadset-updater, choosing my headset, downloading the updater, allowing the headset’s settings to be read, change any of the headset’s settings, then click update. You are able to change the following headset settings: the voice caller announcement (on/off), the language, mute prompt (yes/no), mute reminder (15 minutes/5 minutes/off), smart sensors which allow you to pick up the headset to answer a call (on/off), streaming audio (yes/no),  voice answer (yes/no), wideband audio or HD voice (yes/no).

I had no trouble pairing the headset with our phones (HTC One X and Nexus 6). The first time that you turn on the Voyager Legend it is ready to pair and the LED status light flashes blue and red alternately, so all you have to do is make sure your phone’s Bluetooth is on and be sure to make it visible to other devices. After finding and selecting the headset as “PLT_Legend”, I was not required to enter any passcode (but just in case, if asked you can enter four zeros or “0000”). After pairing you will hear the Plantronics Voyager Legend say “Pairing successful”. When pairing an additional phone, you can either press the Voice button and say “Pair mode” or just hold the Call button until it says “Pairing” and the LED starts flashing blue and red; after which you repeat the same process as with the first phone. You are able to pair two phones to the Voyager Legend and thus are able to answer calls from either phone.

Plantronics Voyager Legend 9

Wearing the headset is comfortable after finding the correct eartip to use and then covering it with the foam cover. The flexibility of the arm that goes behind your ear makes putting on and adjusting the headset easy.

The Bluetooth range was tested and found to be about 33 feet with both cell phones, which is what is to be expected. If you get too far away from the phone, it alerts you by telling you that “Phone is disconnected”, but will reconnect when you come within range.

The Voyager Legend allows you to answer a call by using one of three methods: putting on the headset, saying “Answer” after the caller is announced, or pressing the call button. There were a couple of times when putting on the headset did not work but it is possible to reset the sensors to correct this. While wearing the headset, you press the Call button and if you get a talk-time voice alert, the sensors are working; but if you get a tone, they need to be reset. To reset them, you must charge your headset and place it on a flat non metallic surface for more than 10 seconds. After doing this, there were no other incidences of not being able to answer a call by putting on the Voyager Legend. There were a couple of times when using the voice command “Answer” failed because of enunciation problems or trying to say “Answer” before or during the announcement of the caller. This was due to the learning curve with this device and obviously not a problem with the device itself. Once you learn how the Legend works, it is a treat to use the voice commands.

The call quality was impressive. The audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) worked well cancelling out most background sounds. On a windy day, I was unable to hear any whistling sounds in the background when my husband called me using the Voyager Legend. He sounded very clear. My voice was equally clear to him. He preferred talking to me using the headset rather than his phone so that he could better hear me while driving in the car with the windows down.

To end a call you must press the Call button since there are no voice commands nor is there an option to remove the headset to hang up. In fact, removing the headset will transfer the call to your cell phone. It was fun using this procedure to try to tell the differences between the phone and the Voyager Legend. There are a couple of differences: the headset sounds louder to the person you are talking to and there is some background noise while using it especially in noisy environments.

To mute a call, you press the Voice button on the underside of the microphone boom. There is a notification that you can set up to remind you that Mute is on. The mute was tested successfully as well, although not long enough hear the current 15 minute setting for Mute reminders.

You can also press the Voice button to find out the amount of talk-time left and what phones are connected. If you press the Voice button and say “What can I say?”, you will be given the list of voice commands that you can use. These include: “Pair mode”, “Am I connected?”, “Check battery”, “Call back”, and “Cancel”.

When a call comes in, you have to option to reject the call. To do this, after the caller is announced you are prompted with “Answer or ignore”. You can either say “Ignore”, or you may also press the Call button for two seconds to reject a call, after which the headset will respond with “Call ignored”. Both of these options were tested successfully which allowed the call to go to voicemail. If you wish to return the call, double tapping the Call button or pressing the Voice button and saying “Call back” will call the last number that you either dialed or received.

To voice dial someone you press the Call button for two seconds, wait for a prompt, then say “Call <name or number>”. Again this was tested with success! In fact, this worked while driving in the car with the windows rolled down. This feature ROCKS!

The battery life seemed to be on par with the specifications for this headset which is about seven hours of talk time or 11 days on standby. This was difficult to tell since phone calls are of varying lengths of time and do not occur with a consistent frequency. The more you talk the less of the standby time you have. When the headset was depleted, the 1.5 hour charging time matched that of the Plantronics Voyager Legend manual.

This headset is capable of pausing and playing streaming music by either holding the Voice button for two seconds or setting the headset down or picking it up. However, this headset is a mono Bluetooth headset so listening to music is a rather flat and unexciting experience. Since hands-free calling is my primary use for the Voyager Legend, any music quality issues were unimportant to me.

My husband took this with him on a business trip crammed into a computer bag, and even though it shows some minor wear, it appears to be a very durable device and held up well to his abuse. We haven’t had any opportunities to test the rain/moisture proof nature of the Plantronics, so for now I’ll just trust that it will work under those conditions (fingers crossed).

Final Thoughts

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a huge hit in our home. I would highly recommend this headset because the call quality is so impressive (voice audio quality was wonderful even when driving with the windows rolled down). This headset is somewhat more expensive than others, but the call quality makes it worth the expense. The voice commands and being able to put the headset on to answer a call were just the icing on a fabulous cake. The only drawback to using this headset is that the charging cable is quite short (nine inches long) and if you should lose it, you will not be able to use any of your extra micro USB charging cables. Instead you will have to purchase their nine inch proprietary cable for about $8 or their 24 inch cable for $10 from Amazon.

I love mine! And I highly recommend the charging case they offer – I hate throwing a $100 earpiece in my pocket, and the case not only protects it, but keeps it charged up.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

I love mine, I have the Docking station for it. use it for work phone. I actually prefer my plantronics M70 for mobile use.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

I’ll have to look into the charging stand…

Plantronics does make some nice headsets. My husband’s office uses the over-the-head Plantronics headsets and they love them.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

you are better served with a Jabra Motion UC. much more comfortable, easy to use, and seamless connection to a mobile device via Bluetooth. http://www.jabra.com/motion

@Steve – I’ll have to check out the charging case for sure.

@Brian – I don’t have any experience with the Jabra Motion UC, but from other reviews, the ear piece sounds like it might be more secure, although I’m not sure how much I’d like the fact that the device wraps around the entire back of your ear with the mic boom extending from that…

plantronics voyager legend special edition

A great headset, but I prefer in-ear tips for better sound. After a lot of searching, I found these adapters that make it possible to use rubber in-ear tips with the Voyager at http://www.chockalotta.com – they sell through amazon.

John – Thank you for the info! I may give those in-ear tips a try…

plantronics voyager legend special edition

I have the Voyager Legend UC version, which seamlessly connects to both my smartphone and the Cisco IP desk phone in my office, which along with the APC-42 electronic hook switch cable means I can answer calls without touching the Cisco phone and make calls by simply entering the number and pressing the dial button.

I’ve had several bluetooth headsets over the years, and the Voyager Legend is definitely the best one I’ve used: it’s very comfortable to use for extended periods, the battery life is great, and call quality is excellent too. The controls/buttons are also easy and intuitive to use. Although it’s not cheap (especially the UC version), I would still highly recommend it.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

@Brian – I agree with you. Been a Jabra fan for over 10 years. Extremely comfortable and great quality.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

Am I missing something here, or is this a whole lot of propaganda???

To charge from a cigarette lighter, or outlet, you must (a) carry the tiny-tiny adapter with you at all times (try taking the wall charger with you, in your pocket), and (b) not lose it, or forget it (or you’re screwed). Then, it’s magnet doesn’t stay attached, even when the headset is resting in your car. Half the time, when attached, it fails to maintain a proper connection. The original got plugged directly into the earpiece. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO IS UNSUCESSFULLY SEARCHING FOR THE ORIGIONAL LEGEND, SO THEY CAN CHARGE IT??? Does any of these manufacturers, think about any of these things?

@Andrew – I did not have any trouble charging the Voyager Legend (the magnetic connector always maintained its connection), but I always did so from my house and never tried charging it from our car. When traveling, my husband has never had issues with the short proprietary charging cable because he uses it with a USB multiport desktop charger. I do agree with you that it would be much more desirable to have a standard micro-USB port to charge it from.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

Right on Man! To charge this thing you have to never loose the small magnetic piece that attaches to the end of the wire. It does talk very well, however you will regret buying this model for this reason alone. I have lost and found magnetic piece several times. A replacement is $17 on Ebay. Also, if you ever have to download the “My Headset Updater” from Plantronics website you will again be sorry. My bluetooth speaks Chinese and there’s no way to install the software from Plantronics website to change it. It just will not install.

I’ve never had any problem with the magnetic charging cable: it connects every time and charges away. I also have a small “bits & pieces” zippered bag (that stays in my laptop backpack) in which all my various USB cables, etc. live — so I never have any problems locating it. 🙂

I do understand why Plantronics have gone with a magnetically attached charging cable rather than a standard micro USB, and that is so that it will easily dock/undock into their other devices, such as the UC cradle for desk phone usage and the little charging travel case.

Having said that, it would have been nice if they could have also included a standard micro USB port on the Voyager Legend in addition to the existing magnetic connectors — there certainly appears to be enough room to include one without increasing the size substantially or decreasing battery life noticeably.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

How do I end a call? I’ve tried every way of thinking of, but none of them work, including clicking and holding the way you start a call. Thanks!

@Drew – To end a call, all you should have to do is a short single press of the Call button (the button located at the back of the microphone boom, NOT the underside of the boom). This works for me.

We are in agriculture, and others are in ag related services,,, we have several people in our area that uses voyager legends ear pieces. we all have trouble with them making connections to charge them. Also the stand 7 hour talk time doesn’t last a full day on our schedules . so chargers are carried in many pieces of equipment . This staying connected to charge has been an issue for about a year and a half. we also wish they would go back to a plug connection! If it wasn’t for volume being louder than other bluetooths, we would find other earpieces.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

Unable to make voice calls. Is it Legend problem or is it Samsung Galaxy S5 problem?

Plantronics Voyager Legend

plantronics voyager legend special edition

An important item to have in your Work From Home (WFH) kit is a good Bluetooth headset. The Plantronics Voyager Legend isn’t new, but they have a Special Edition that’s a good option and worth mentioning.

Bluetooth headsets come in a variety of shapes and sizes. I don’t like the clunky over-the-head kinds, and prefer opting for simple, one-ear, attachments. Good also if it has a microphone on a short boom, as I think that goes some way toward better audio pickup, but without being too obtrusive.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend is exactly that. The design does include a slightly bulky part that rests behind the year. That, and its extra weight, will be a constant reminder that you’re wearing it. I’m not too bothered, because I want to be reminded to take it off once I’m done with my call.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

The fit in the ear tends to be a problem to grapple with. It’s not that it’s hard to put on the Plantronics Voyager Legend. However, the fiddly earpiece is definitely not anywhere near the quickest thing to put on. I also can’t seem to get the fit just right. The earpiece definitely won’t fall off easily, given that hooked design over the ear, but the part that goes into the ear doesn’t seem to work very well for me.

Fortunately, that fiddly fit doesn’t impact sound quality. To be clear, this is a headset designed for voice communications, and for listening to conversations, the Plantronics Voyager Legend sounds great. It doesn’t sound good for music, so don’t expect this to double-up for listening to Spotify or watching Netflix.

One of the most important things in a headset, for me, is how well the microphone performs. I’m pleased to report that the Plantronics Voyager Legend doesn’t disappoint in this regard.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

To test, I created a noisy environment using a Youtube video of “household background noises” playing back from a Google Nest Hub placed within 2 feet of these three microphones: Logitech C922 webcam , Plantronics Voyager Legend, and the built-in microphones of the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 7390 .

This is a truly challenging environment, evidenced by the horrible audio recording I got from the Dell notebook. The Logitech C922 performed decently, but the noise suppression left lots of strange audio artefacts that impacted the audio quality. This is also true, though to a lesser degree, with the Plantronics Voyager Legend. There was much more focus no my voice, so it wasn’t so hard for me to be understood by others at the far end.

The excellent microphone performance comes from using three microphones in the boom. These are supplemented by active Digital Signal Processing and an internal, adaptive, 20-band equalizer.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

The Plantronics Voyager Legend comes with a few dedicated buttons that are simple to use. On the back piece that hooks behind the ear, you’ll find a power slider switch and a volume control toggle.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

The charging contacts are below. They attached magnetically to an adapter. II would have much preferred to have a USB connection directly into the earpiece; the adapter is something begging to get misplaced. The Planatronics Voyager Legend is rated for 7 hours of talk time and 11 days of standby time.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

A call button is placed at the top of the boom microphone, and on the side, you’ll find a mute/play/pause button. The boom has stainless steel windscreen for improved protection from wind noise.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

A number of built-in sensors in the Plantronics Voyager Legend can activate a variety of functions in conjunction with soft phones running in your PC. For example, picking up and wearing the headset answers calls. You can also use voice commands, like “Answer” to take a call when you’re already wearing the headset.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend weighs 18 grams. It uses Bluetooth 3.0 with a operating distance of up to 10 metres.

There’s a Plantronics Hub software that runs in both Windows 10 and macOS which allows you to configure various settings, as well as do firmware upgrade, of the Plantronics Voyager Hub.

plantronics voyager legend special edition

In the box, the Plantronics Voyager Legend includes two silicon gel tips and two foam covers. You also get the adapter for charging, and a USB to Micro-USB cable to use with that adapter.

Just so you know, the Special Edition’s highlight is the gold trim on the microphone boom. It’s otherwise the same as the standard Voyager Legend.

In Singapore, the Plantronics Voyager Legend Special Edition retails at S$179.99. However, you can find street prices at about half that, such as on Amazon Singapore or Lazada.

The Plantronics Voyager Legend, Special Edition, is a decent Bluetooth headset with excellent audio quality, but a fiddly fit.

  • Excellent audio pickup with superb noise cancellation
  • Great voice quality (speakers)
  • Long battery life

Product description.

The Voyager Legend earpiece headset delivers unsurpassed audio clarity, all-day comfort, and the hands-free mobility you need to take calls on the road or on the go. Sound the way you want with your Plantronics headset’s triple-mic active Digital Signal Processing (DSP), with noise and wind canceling—the perfect remedy for blocking out distracting background sound. With its Bluetooth connection, the Voyager Legend lets you freely move up to 33 feet (10 meters) as well as connect a second smartphone or tablet with your headset’s multipoint technology. Smart sensors take a load off your shoulders by pausing your music and routing calls directly to your mobile. Voice commands further simplify how you communicate by letting you answer or ignore calls, check battery level, and monitor connection status by merely tapping the voice command button and then speaking. Plus, the mute, volume, and power buttons are located on your headset for easy access. The Voyager Legend also sports a balanced and comfortable design—you’ll practically forget you’re wearing it! The convenience continues thanks to the included charging cord’s magnetic, snap-fit connection making recharging your phone headset quick and easy.
