Participation requirements

It is a walking tour for 3 hours, but comfortably-paced along major picturesque avenues within Midtown Manhattan. Restroom and seating stops are available along the way.

We recommend sneakers, hiking shoes, and waterproof boots on rainy days. Make sure to dress appropriately and bring anything you will need…..gloves in the winter and sunscreen in the summer.

This is a great guided stroll along Manhattan’s most picturesque avenues for a family, offering many photo-taking opportunities. Led by an expert AIANY guide, participants will learn how interdisciplinary teams of urban planners, architects, landscape architects, developers, and community groups are addressing storm surges, intense rains, and hotter temperatures. Learn how climate change is affecting our city and people, as well as the actions NYC is taking to reduce its carbon footprint and mitigate threats.

Interwoven throughout the tour will be illustrations of the adverse environmental impacts of climate change and pollution on moderate-income neighborhoods and communities of color. The tour will also highlight many green buildings and sustainable designs that reduce energy consumption, water usage and pollution while creating healthy living environments.

AIANY Industrial Waterfront Tour into Freshkills Park

This extended 3.25-hour AIA New York tour travels to Staten Island and offers a limited "backstage pass" to experience the transformation of the region's former largest garbage landfill into today's Freshkills Park. The cruise will enter a network of tidal kills (or streams) to explore the unprecedented land reclamation project, nearly three times the size of Central Park. NYC Parks and AIANY guides will provide insightful narration about cutting-edge landscape architecture and engineering, urban planning, and the industrial architecture and infrastructure of Staten Island's northwest shore.

John Kriskiewicz,   Assoc. AIA

A native New Yorker, John holds a professional degree in Architecture from Pratt Institute.  Over the past three decades he has taught courses focusing on architectural history and planning history at Parsons School of Design, The Cooper Union, Fashion Institute of Technology, Stern College for Women, and Manhattan College. John has designed tour programs and lectures for many of New York City’s institutions and corporations. His exhibitions and articles have revealed history and preservation issues to a broad audience.  John admits to a special affinity for New York’s extensive infrastructure as well as its Mid-Century Modern heritage.   Book John K for his Special Bridge & Infrastructure Tour

As a founding co-chair of the AIANY Architecture Tour program, Arthur regularly guides the Around Manhattan, Lower Manhattan and Freshkills Park Boat Tours.  In 2012 he launched a Featured Guide Series to invite recognized NYC waterfront experts to share firsthand insights pertaining to infrastructure, ecology and post-Sandy resilient design.  Through the AIA, Arthur also leads walking tours in Lower Manhattan exploring new buildings within Historic Districts.  Arthur is a native New Yorker whose early professional experience at a number of NY firms fostered a deep interest in the City’s built environment.  In 1998 he co-founded Fink & Platt Architects, an award winning firm, that creates highly crafted spaces, integrating a sustainable approach to architecture, restoration, and interiors.  The firm completed a renovation and addition for the Jewish Braille Institute, the master plan for Coney Island USA as well as numerous residential projects in NYC and the surrounding areas.

Doug is a native New Yorker and a graduate of Vassar College with a B.A. in history.  He is a licensed New York City tour guide who specializes in tours that feature the architecture and history of the city. Since 2012, when joining the Architecture Tour Committee, Doug has been conducting the AIANY Around Manhattan Boat Tours.  Doug highlights not only the recent and classic architectural gems but also the many industrial artifacts and structures that are seen from the boats as we circumnavigate Manhattan. In addition, he conducts architecture tours of the 9/11 Memorial and World Trade Center for the AIANY Chapter walking tour program. Doug’s Lower Manhattan walking tour focuses on changes in urban planning theories and practices from the mid-20th Century to the present that guided the development of the original Twin Towers and the new World Trade Center complex in starkly different directions.

John guides the AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Tour and developed the Around Manhattan Historic Architecture Tour. A licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide, he leads walking tours for the AIA, the Municipal Art Society and private clients. He is the President of DOCOMOMO New York/Tri-State, a local chapter of an international organization devoted to preserving Modern architecture. He co-chaired the AIA New York Chapter Historic Buildings Committee from 2011 until 2015. He was Director of Business Development at Gwathmey Siegel & Associates and Associate at Beckhard Richlan Szerbaty & Associates. A resident of New York City since 1990, John received a B.A. in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley and studied real estate development at Columbia University. In 2016 the AIANY honored him with the Harry B. Rutkins Award in recognition of “his continuing work to raise the public’s awareness of architecture.”

Thomas Mellins is an architectural historian, author, and exhibition curator. Mr. Mellins recently co-authored New York Rising: An Illustrated History from the Durst Collection, and is the co-author, with Robert A.M. Stern and others, of three volumes in a book series on the architecture and urbanism of New York City: New York 1880, New York 1960, and New York 1930, which was nominated for a National Book Award, and has written for the New York Times, Architectural Record, and other publications.  In addition to lecturing extensively, he has served on design juries at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and has taught at Parsons/The New School of Design and the New York School of Interior Design . In 1999 Mayor Rudolph Giuliani designated Mr. Mellins a Centennial Historian of New York City. 

Mr. Mellins has organized exhibitions on a wide variety of architectural and cultural subjects, including most recently: “Gay Gatherings: Philip Johnson, David Whitney and the Modern Arts” for the National Trust for Preservation. Among the many exhibitions Mr. Mellins has curated for the Museum of the City of New York are “Affordable New York: A Housing Legacy,” and “The American Style: Colonial Revival and the Modern Metropolis,” for which he co-wrote a companion book.  Mr. Mellins has curated numerous exhibitions for the Center for Architecture in New York, including: “Open to the Public: Civic Space Now,” “The Edgeless School: Design for Learning,” and “A Space Within: The National September 11 Memorial and Museum.”  Mr. Mellins  co-curated “House & Home,” a long-term exhibition at the National Building Museum, and  was the curator of “The New York Public Library: Celebrating 100 Years,” which attracted over 800,000 visitors to become the most heavily attended exhibition in the library’s history.

Andrew is a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide, geographer, and museum professional who has extensive experience working with cultural and industrial sites along New York City’s waterfront. Since 2009, Andrew and his team at Turnstile Tours & Studio—a tour company and consultancy that works with nonprofits, cultural organizations, and museums around the world—have developed and operated tours of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn Army Terminal, Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, and New York City’s Public Markets. During this time he has witnessed a remarkable transformation of the architecture and open space on New York’s waterfront. With his longstanding interest in architecture and deep knowledge of the city’s built environment and history, Andrew joined the AIANY Architecture Tour team in 2022. He also brings special expertise about the city’s industrial architecture, as well as its maritime, military, and labor history. His tours highlight the waterfront infrastructure that keeps the city working, and he is also very interested in public and social housing, examples of which are very prominent on the Around Manhattan Architecture Boat Tour.

Your luxury experience starts when you’re met inside the airport with a smile by your friendly driver – who’ll be holding a sign with your name on it.  

Day 1 – Time To Explore

Embark on a four-hour private tour of some of the best places to visit in NYC via luxury vehicle complete with a professional driver and an expert tour guide who’ll enlighten you with historical facts, entertain you with fun antidotes, share little-known secrets and point out hidden gems. Your magical day takes you on our popular Central Park and Midtown Highlights Tour which includes the infamous, flashy and always entertaining Times Square, the grandeur of the architectural landmark Grand Central Terminal, the sprawling cultural hub that is Rockefeller Center – and much, much more. 

Day 2 – NYC History 101

Today finds you heading out once again with your expert tour guide for an eight-hour experience where you’ll discover Lower Manhattan’s most significant landmarks. 

• You’re first stop is historical Battery Park where you will board a ferry for a scenic ride that will transport you to a time and place where millions of hopeful European immigrants arrived starry-eyed and ready to take on new lives in America.
• Upon arrival you’ll proudly stand in the shadow of the majestic Lady Liberty, explore her story in the Statue of Liberty Museum and then board the ferry to Ellis Island where you’re sure to be overcome with emotion when you realize you very well could be following the footsteps of your ancestors.
• Afterward, the ferry will return you back to the beautifully landscaped Battery Park where you’ll walk through its winding paths as you continue on to the hallowed grounds of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum for a somber yet oh-so-powerful experience.

Day 3 – Let’s Go For A Walk (And Perhaps A Bite To Eat)

Today you’ll join your expert tour guide on a fun and informative four-hour private walking tour of your choice. Check out your choices below – or – we can customize a tour based on your interests and passions.

You pick the Broadway show – and what a fabulous selection of musicals and plays it is! – and then we get you premium seats to enjoy the performance from!

Day 4 - A Museum Is A Must

Your experience also includes general admission to one of five of NYC’s most popular museums – which you can stroll through at your leisure. Choose from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the American Museum of Natural History, The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) or the Museum of Broadway. Our 1st day we concentrated on the many iconic sights of Midtown Manhattan, including inside the Empire State Building, NY City Library, Grand Central, Rockefeller Center, and many more including hidden gems along the way – all fantastic!!!

Building Tours

Guided tours of significant buildings in New York City and the Tri-State area are organized by AIA New York Program Committees.

Led by architects, these intimate tours offer greater detail about a given site or building including its initial design and construction. Building tours are an opportunity to see inside some of the city’s most notable new projects and important historical sites that have made a sustained impact on the built environment.

Recent sites have included a tour of the Park Avenue Armory led by its restoration team; Congregation Beit Simchat Torah led by Stephen Cassell of Architecture Research Office; a private tour of NYC’s City Hall led by Richard Southwick of Beyer Blinder Belle; the Cary Leeds Tennis Center led by Peter Gluck of Gluck+; and the East Hampton Library and Guild Hall of East Hampton led by Robert A.M. Stern Architects and LHSA+DP.

Building tour: magazzino italian art museum.

Magazzino Italian Art , the nonprofit museum and research center, is dedicated to advancing scholarship and public appreciation of postwar and contemporary Italian art in the United States. Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu were inspired to share their lifelong love and passion for Italian art with their community. The first pavilion, a 20,000-square-foot structure designed by Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo, opened its doors in 2017, creating a new cultural hub and community resource within the Hudson. Magazzino’s second building opened in September 2023 as a unique opportunity to reunite Miguel Quismondo with his mentor and world-renowned architect Alberto Campo Baeza. The design of the Robert Olnick Pavilion, in the same spirit as the existing building, returns to materials that echo the logical and humble philosophies of Arte Povera.

Schedule: 11:00 am: Tour attendees arrive at Magazzino Italian Art 11:30 am–1:00 pm: Magazzino Italian Art museum tour with architect Miguel Quismondo 1:00 pm: Lunch prepared by Chef Luca Galli served at the Robert Olnick Pavilion

Transportation: The Metro-North train departs from Grand Central Terminal at 9:50 a.m. and arrives in Cold Spring at 11:14 a.m. A Magazzino Italian Art Van will pick guests up from the station and return them at the end of the event. Attendees may also drive on their own to Magazzino Italian Art where on site parking is available.

Building Tour: Olnick Spanu House and Magazzino Italian Art

The Olnick Spanu House in Garrison, NY was designed by the Spanish architect Alberto Campo Baeza in 2007 for the co-founders of Magazzino Italian Art, Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu.

Magazzino Italian Art , the nonprofit museum and research center, is dedicated to advancing scholarship and public appreciation of postwar and contemporary Italian art in the United States. Attendees may also drive on their own to Magazzino Italian Art where on site parking is available.

ENYA Beyond the Boards: REX

The AIANY Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) presents the first of its summer 2024 additions to the Beyond the Boards event series. Leadership at REX will profile the firm and its design process before focusing on two current projects: The Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University and Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC). The presentation will take an in-depth look at design strategies as well as some of the unique challenges faced during the projects. Guests will have the opportunity to view the new REX office following the presentation. The event will be followed by a site tour of PAC on the following day.

Speakers: Alysen Hiller Fiore, Associate Principal, REX Davis Richardson, NCARB, Project Leader & Architect, REX

About the Speakers: Alysen Hiller Fiore is an Associate Principal at REX, co-managing the office with Joshua Ramus. She currently serves as project leader for Domino Site B, a pair of 50-story residential towers on the Brooklyn waterfront that will complete the redevelopment of the Domino Sugar Factory site. Preceding Domino, Hiller Fiore led the design team for the Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center (PAC NYC) since its competition stage in 2014. Hiller Fiore was also a project leader on the re-cladding and renovation of Five Manhattan West, a Brutalist landmark straddling New York Penn Station’s rail yard; the Necklace Residence on New York’s Long Island; and the Wakefield School Performing Arts Center in Virginia. Hiller Fiore currently sits on the Industry Advisory Group of the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Overseas Building Operations. She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design, with honors, and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, both from the University of Iowa.

Davis Richardson is a Project Leader at REX and a licensed architect in Texas. He holds an M.Arch from the University of Texas at Austin and has served as faculty at NJIT and the Architectural Association.

ENYA Beyond the Boards: Perelman Performing Arts Center with REX

Join  AIANY Emerging New York Architects for the second event in its summer 2024 Beyond the Boards series, a tour of the The Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC), designed by REX with executive architect Davis Body Bond and interior architect (lobby, restaurant) Rockwell Group. The project will also be presented at the previous day's Beyond the Boards event at the offices of REX . The tour will be led by Alysen Hiller Fiore, Associate Principal at REX. Details and instructions will be shared with registrants closer to the event.

Building Tour: Grand Central Madison

Join the AIANY Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for a tour of the newly constructed Grand Central Madison! Architect Peter Campanella of AECOM and arts specialist Yaling Chen of MTA Art & Design will walk us through the many levels of the Grand Central Madsion LIRR Rail terminal. The tour will highlight the distinctive architecture and works of art that are integral to this underground transport museum. After the tour, join us for an optional debrief at the Grand Central Oyster Bar. Attendees can purchase a soup or snack as we enjoy the historic Guastavino space and discuss the tour.

Building of the Day: The Gilder Center

As part of NYCxDESIGN , the Center for Architecture will host a preview of  Archtober  programming the week of May 20. Join us on Monday, May 20 for a tour of The Gilder Center.

The Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation is the latest addition to New York’s historic American Museum of Natural History. At a time of urgent need for better public understanding of science and greater access to science education, the Gilder Center is designed to amplify the intellectual impact of the Museum with experiential architecture that encourages exploration—drawing in people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to share the excitement of scientific discovery and learning about the natural world.

Building of the Day: Cathedral of St. John the Divine Crossing Dome Roof

As part of NYCxDESIGN , the Center for Architecture will host a preview of  Archtober programming the week of May 20. Join us Tuesday, May 21 for a tour of Cathedral of St. John the Divine Crossing Dome Roof.

Ennead and their consultants designed a new copper roof to protect the 120 year old Guastavino tile dome over the Cathedral's crossing and restored the interior of the dome. Our tour would include looking at the dome from street level, inside the Cathedral, and up close from an adjacent roof (that requires a 17-story climb).

Please note: this tour is not accessible by wheelchair and will include climbing many stairs.

Building Tours: Four Midcentury Modern Houses on Fire Island

To mark the fifth anniversary of the formation of AIA New York's Custom Residential Architects Network (AIANY CRAN) , the chapter is pleased to present an all day outing and survey of the Mid-Century Modern Architecture of Fire Island Pines. The program offers 30 registrants private bus transportation from/to the Center for Architecture, pre-paid ferry tickets, a guided walking tour jointly presented by Fire Island Pines Historical Preservation Society  and Pines Modern , and finally a cocktail reception on the island, hosted by Lutron, the nation’s premium lighting control company.

Led by Gianfranco Lentini and Christopher Rawlins , the program will include tours of four house interiors by four noted designers: Harry Bates, Marcel Bretos, Earl Combs, and the prolific Horace Gifford who lived and worked in the Pines. Lentini and Rawlins will explain the importance of preserving the memories of Midcentury Modern architects. As Rawlin writes: “Their homes shared the spotlight with inspired cameos by Bray-Schaible, Arthur Erickson, Andrew Geller, Julius Kaufman, Michael Kinlaw, James McCleod, Don Page, and Steven Robinson. While each pursued different forms, all shared the belief that life at the beach should be carefree as well as maintenance-free."

This guided tour of mid-century modern homes aims to unpack our history, rethink our priorities, and honor the homeowners who have maintained the integrity of their vintage properties.

About the Speakers: Gianfranco Lentini is a Researcher for the Fire Island Pines Historical Society, which is a group of Pines community members whose mission is to collect, preserve, display, and celebrate the rich and colorful history of the island for present and future generations.

Christopher Rawlins is the Founder and President of Pines Modern and Principal of Rawlins Design . He is the author of Fire Island Modernist: Horace Gifford and the Architecture of Seduction (Metropolis Books/Gordon de Vries Studio, 2013). A revised and expanded edition of Fire Island Modernist will be published next year by Metropolis Books/Gordon deVries Studio.
