Earlier this year I was one of the first travellers to experience a brand-new Kenya safari taster and beach holiday from Tui.

I’ve always dreamed of going on an African safari and everything about this experience in Kenya blew me away. From the wildlife encounters to the astonishing landscapes, delicious Indian-inspired cuisine and beaches that are straight out of a postcard for paradise.

For anyone considering a holiday to Kenya, I thought I would share some of the most memorable parts of my trip, plus some information on how straightforward and superb value it is to book a Kenya safari with Tui.

Disclosure: I travelled to Kenya as a guest of Tui but was under no obligation to write this post. All opinions are my own.

On safari in Kenya

Tui use Pollmans, one of Kenya’s oldest and most respected tour companies, to manage the safari experience for their guests in Kenya.

Under the expert guidance of Roger, we explored Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Taita Hills & Amboseli National Park, going on two bumpy game drives a day and discovering that each park has its own unique landscape and drawcards.

From marvelling at the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro that towers over Amboseli, to meeting the ochre-coloured elephants of Tsavo East, it’s possible to have several different safari experiences in just a few days in Kenya.

Tsavo East is the largest and oldest national park in Kenya and is home to the African Big Five – lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and rhinos.

What’s so unique about Tsavo East, though, is that the elephants here have a unique red colour due to the high levels of iron oxide in the soil that they coat themselves in.

Within minutes of entering Tsavo East we came across the incredible sight of over 40 burgundy elephants making their way to a nearby watering hole.

It was such a spell-binding sight, not just because of the elephants’ red coats, but due to the sheer number of the elephants who just kept coming and coming. Incredibly, we also spotted a hippo in the middle of the watering hole who looked a bit angry about having to share it.

We also had another lucky encounter in Tsavo East because our guide was able to track down 2 lionesses that were on the move with 6 young cubs following behind them.  I felt like my heart was in my mouth as we made our way to where the group had been spotted and couldn’t believe it when we approached to find them strolling down the track towards us.

I was too awestruck to get any decent footage of the lions passing the jeep but I did get some pictures of their little tushes as they walked away!

I’ve never seen lions in the wild before, never mind ones this young. Being close enough to hear the sound of their little meows as they passed was amazing.

The route we took through Tsavo West gave off pure Jurassic Park vibes. Our experience here felt more like an off-road adventure as we made our way across rivers and down untouched tracks where not a single other jeep passed us. The terrain here is very different to Tsavo East, featuring a lot more taller trees that are a perfect food source for the Masai giraffe population.

The Masai giraffe is the most abundant giraffe species in Kenya and they predominantly live in the south of the country near the border with Tanzania. What makes the Masai giraffe stand out from other giraffe subspecies are its spots, which have jagged edges and are irregular in shape. It is also the tallest of all giraffe subspecies, making it the tallest land animal.

Giraffe spotting quickly became my favourite safari activity as I loved the challenge of working out what was a long neck and what was just a tree! After a slow, eye-straining start we were lucky to spot a number of giraffes in Tsavo West; some with spot patterns that I never knew existed.

Inside the park, we stopped for lunch at Kilaguni Serena Lodge and had one of the most memorable dining experiences of the trip.

Kilaguni is perched on a promontory that has wide sweeping views of the savannah. As we sat down to eat it felt like someone had pressed play on a Disney movie as giraffes, elephants, zebras and impalas took turns to approach the watering hole in front of us to drink and play.

Taita Hills

Salt Lick Safari Lodge Kenya

Taita Hills is a privately owned wildlife sanctuary on the borders of Tsavo West where we stayed in the most unique safari lodge in Africa and I had the most memorable night’s stay of my life.

Taita Hills is home to Salt Lick Safari Lodge , which consists of 96 round rooms on stilts that offer incredible, unobstructed views of the wildlife that comes to drink from waterholes directly below the guest rooms.

safari holidays kenya tui

The rooms, though round, are surprisingly generous & cosy, but it’s hard to pay attention to anything other than the picture windows, which during my stay framed two elephants having a stand-off over who got to drink from the waterhole first.

Salt Lick Safari Lodge also has an underground lookout right by the waterhole where you can get incredibly close to the wildlife in a safe environment. The views from here are particularly spectacular during dry season as large groups of elephants, buffaloes, zebras and various antelopes (sometime trailed by big cats) come for scarce water.

During the evening, we had a memorable sundowner experience at Kudu Point , a lookout in the centre of the sanctuary, where we enjoyed live music and cold drinks around an atmospheric fire pit. The views and the food, combined with the laughter as we tried to join in the traditional dancing, made it my favourite evening on safari.

Amboseli National Park

safari holidays kenya tui

Our last game drives of the trip were in the park I was most excited to visit. Arguably the most iconic of Kenya’s national parks, Amboseli National Park is famed for having incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest freestanding mountain.

For me, Amboseli felt like a photographer’s dream. The wide-open plains made it easy to spot elephants and when the clouds parted you’d often catch a glimpse of the snow-capped peaks on the humongous mountain behind them.

We also saw a huge number of hippos – who looked quite sweet but are in fact the most dangerous land mammal in Africa – and more flamingos than I thought possible grouped together in the water.

We stayed in the heart of the national park at Amboseli Serena Lodge , which through its décor and staff felt fully ingrained in local culture. The lodge hires predominantly from the Maasai community and they wear traditional dress instead of a uniform, which is something we hadn’t seen at any of the other lodges.

Amboseli Serena Lodge also treated us to a bush dinner experience, where not only was there an abundance of delicious bbq food but a performance by Maasai dancers to end the evening.

I loved watching a demonstration of adamu, the traditional jumping dance the Maasai are known for, and learned it’s a type of mating ritual. The young Maasai warriors jump to demonstrate their strength and attract a bride. The higher they jump, the better their prospects. Some of the men in our group were cajoled into having a go and it was clear they were going to need a little more practise!

Beach holidays in Kenya

Diani Beach Kenya

It’s easy to pair your safari holiday in Kenya with a few days relaxing on the beach. We stayed in two different beachfront hotels to get a taste of the options and I loved both of them for different reasons.

Southern Palms Beach Resort, Diani Beach

safari holidays kenya tui

The first beach resort we stayed at was Southern Palms on Diani Beach and, wow, I did not know beaches like this existed in Kenya.

Located approx. 1hr30 south of Mombasa Airport, Diani Beach is located on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya and its pure white sands and warm shallow waters can definitely rival the Maldives.

My room at Southern Palms looked out directly onto the beach, where not only could I watch spellbinding sunrises over the ocean but often traditional dhow boats and camels would pass by too.

The hotel features Swahili-influenced architecture and between its arches and curves and swaying palms you get a real sense of being somewhere quite unique.

We stayed at Southern Palms on an all-inclusive basis and while buffets are not usually my preferred choice for evening meals they did them really well here. Kenyan cuisine features a lot of Indian and Arabic influences and I loved how the hotel leaned into that. There was always a generous selection of dishes I recognised (like curries, daal and freshly baked roti) alongside Kenyan specialities I enjoyed trying.

In fact, the food at every place we stayed on this trip was impressively good. I have been known to go hungry at buffet restaurants because I am fussy if the food is not freshly cooked and boiling hot, but that was always the case in all the properties mentioned here, with most restaurants having several live cooking stations to choose from.

While we didn’t have time for a boat excursion on our trip, it’s definitely something I’d recommend doing in Diani. The southern coast of Kenya is known for its richly diverse marine life and while on a dhow cruise you’re likely to see turtles, mantas, barracuda and, if you are lucky, maybe even whale sharks.

Serena Beach Resort, Mombasa

safari holidays kenya tui

Our second beach holiday experience in Kenya was at the Serena Beach Resort & Spa . While not small, this hotel’s layout and design gave it more of a boutique feel. The traditional architecture of the main building paired with bright pink bougainvillea was absolutely beautiful.

The rooms also had lots of rustic Africa decor as well as giant terraces, although I was warned to not leave my door open in case the monkeys came in!

safari holidays kenya tui

We only had 1 night here but it was enough to appreciate the beach bar and evening entertainment. The hotel had a wonderful atmosphere as well as a convenient location close to Mombasa, so is a great option if you want to avoid the longer drive to Diani.

How to book

safari holidays kenya tui

Tui are making it easy for people, like me, who wouldn’t know where to start planning a safari holiday. Their Taster Safari and Beach Holiday package includes all your flights, transfers, accommodation, half or full board meal options and game drives.

To give you an idea of prices, a 14-night Kenya Taster Safari and Stay with five-night safari and nine-night beach break including British Airways flights, 23kg luggage and transfers, starts from £3,243pp, which is a fraction of the price of safari holidays in other parts of Africa.

You can book this offer online or, if you’d like help tailor-making your perfect safari holiday, pop into your nearest Tui store to speak to their Travel Experts.

Tui also offer beach breaks to 16 resorts on the Mombasa coast, which you can explore here .

This really was an absolutely incredible experience and I’m so grateful to Tui for making my safari dreams a reality. If you’d like to know more about this trip head to my Instagram and check out my ‘Tui Kenya’ highlights.

What is the best time of year to have a combined beach and safari holiday in Kenya?

Kenya offers a unique opportunity for travellers seeking the perfect blend of safari adventure and tropical beach relaxation. To make the most of this magical combination, it’s essential to consider the best time of year for your Kenyan safari and beach holiday. The ideal time for a combined safari and beach vacation in Kenya is during the dry seasons, which provide excellent conditions for wildlife viewing and beach activities alike.

Dry Season: June to October

The months of June through October are part of Kenya’s dry season, which is often referred to as the “safari season.” During this time, the weather is generally dry and sunny, making it the perfect period for a safari adventure. Wildlife congregates around water sources, providing excellent opportunities for game drives and wildlife photography . This is also the time when the Great Migration occurs in the Maasai Mara, a spectacle that shouldn’t be missed. After your thrilling safari experiences, you can head to Kenya’s stunning coastal destinations, such as Diani Beach, where you’ll find pristine beaches and warm waters. The dry season ensures clear skies and pleasant temperatures for beach activities, including swimming, snorkelling, and water sports.

Short Rains: November to December

If you’re considering a combined safari and beach holiday in Kenya during the “short rains” season from November to December, you’ll find a unique charm in the landscape. While there may be occasional showers, this period offers lush greenery, ideal for photography and birdwatching. It’s a quieter time for safaris, with fewer crowds, and accommodations may offer attractive rates. After your safari adventures, you can still enjoy the beaches, although there might be occasional rain showers. If you don’t mind a little rain and prefer a more budget-friendly option, this season can provide a memorable safari and beach experience.

A combined safari and beach holiday in Kenya offers the best of both worlds, allowing you to explore the incredible wildlife and landscapes of the savannah, followed by relaxation on pristine coastal shores. Whether you choose the dry season for optimal safari conditions or the short rains for a quieter and more budget-conscious adventure, Kenya’s diverse landscapes and experiences will leave you with lasting memories of your safari and beach holiday.

Which Kenyan beach and coastal resorts are a good base for a safari holiday?

Diani Beach, located on Kenya’s south coast, is an excellent base for a safari holiday in Kenya. Its strategic location offers easy access to some of the country’s most iconic national parks and reserves, making it a convenient starting point for your safari adventure. Diani Beach is known for its stunning white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush coastal vegetation. After an exhilarating safari experience, you can unwind on the pristine shores of Diani, where beachfront resorts offer luxurious accommodations and a wide range of activities, including water sports, spa treatments, and fine dining. Diani’s vibrant and welcoming atmosphere ensures a perfect balance between safari excitement and beachfront relaxation.

Mombasa: A Historical and Cultural Hub

Mombasa, Kenya’s coastal city , is another excellent choice as a base for a safari holiday. With its rich history and vibrant culture, Mombasa offers a diverse range of attractions and experiences. Travellers can explore historic sites such as Fort Jesus, immerse themselves in Swahili culture, and stroll through bustling markets. Mombasa’s proximity to major safari destinations, including Tsavo National Park and Shimba Hills National Reserve , allows for convenient safari excursions. After your safari adventures, you can return to Mombasa’s coastal resorts, where you’ll find comfortable accommodations, local cuisine, and opportunities to unwind by the Indian Ocean. Mombasa’s status as a major transport hub also simplifies travel logistics for safari-goers.

Malindi: A Coastal Gem

Malindi, located to the north of Mombasa, is a coastal gem that serves as a picturesque base for a safari holiday. This charming town is renowned for its idyllic beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and a relaxed atmosphere. Malindi’s proximity to the Watamu Marine National Park and the Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve offers a unique blend of coastal and wildlife experiences. Safari enthusiasts can easily embark on day trips or extended safaris to nearby parks, such as Tsavo and Meru National Parks. After your safari excursions, you can return to Malindi’s boutique hotels and resorts, which offer personalized service, fresh seafood, and a tranquil setting for unwinding by the sea. Malindi provides an intimate and culturally rich alternative for travellers seeking a safari base with a touch of coastal charm.

Should I visit Diani beach as part of a Kenyan safari holiday?

When planning a Kenyan safari holiday, adding Diani Beach to your itinerary can be a captivating choice. Diani Beach, situated on Kenya’s south coast, offers a remarkable combination of natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation. After thrilling safari experiences in Kenya’s iconic national parks and reserves, Diani provides a perfect coastal escape to rejuvenate and soak in the serene coastal vibes.

The Perfect Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

Diani Beach is more than just a stunning coastal destination; it’s a versatile addition to your safari holiday. Here, you can embark on a wide range of water sports, including snorkelling , scuba diving, and kite surfing, providing an adventurous contrast to your safari activities. Diani is conveniently located near several major national parks and game reserves, such as Tsavo, Amboseli , and Masai Mara . This proximity simplifies travel logistics, allowing you to seamlessly transition from safari adventures to coastal bliss. Whether you choose to end your safari with a few days of beachfront relaxation or intersperse your safari with beach breaks, Diani Beach offers a hassle-free and enjoyable experience. The ease of access, combined with Diani’s charm and diverse activities, makes it a compelling choice for a Kenyan safari holiday that leaves you with lasting memories.

What should I pack for a Kenyan beach and safari holiday?

When packing for a Kenyan beach and safari holiday, it’s crucial to consider the diverse environments you’ll encounter. For safari adventures, opt for neutral-coloured clothing, such as khakis and earth tones, to blend into the natural surroundings and avoid attracting insects. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants provide protection from both the sun and pesky insects. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat, comfortable closed-toe shoes for game drives, and sunglasses with UV protection. Binoculars and a good camera with a zoom lens are essential for wildlife enthusiasts, as you’ll want to capture those memorable moments.

Beach Essentials: Sun, Sand, and Sea

Transitioning to the beach requires a different set of essentials. Bring swimsuits, flip-flops, and beachwear for sunbathing and water activities. Pack plenty of sunscreen with high SPF, as the African sun can be intense. A beach bag, beach towel, and waterproof phone case are handy additions. If you plan to explore coral reefs through snorkelling or scuba diving, consider bringing your own gear for a comfortable fit. Additionally, a light beach cover-up, beach hat, and a reusable water bottle are useful items to stay comfortable while enjoying the coastal paradise.

Versatile Wardrobe and Travel Documents

To minimize luggage, aim for versatile clothing that can transition from safari to beach and back. Packing lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that can be layered is a smart choice. Remember essentials like travel-sized toiletries, medications, a first-aid kit, and a universal adapter for charging devices. Don’t forget your passport, visa, travel insurance documents, and copies of important documents stored separately. A small backpack or daypack is useful for excursions, and a reusable shopping bag can come in handy for collecting souvenirs. By packing smart and considering the unique demands of both safari and beach environments, you’ll be well-prepared for your memorable Kenyan holiday.

Is it best to go on safari before or after a stay at Diani beach?

The decision to go on safari before or after a stay at Diani Beach ultimately comes down to personal preference and the type of experience you desire. Each sequence offers its unique advantages, allowing you to tailor your Kenyan holiday to your specific interests and priorities.

Starting with a safari allows you to embark on thrilling game drives, see the Big Five , and capture incredible wildlife moments with a fresh perspective. Afterward, Diani Beach provides a serene and relaxing escape to unwind and reflect on your safari adventures. It offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation, ensuring your Kenyan holiday is filled with memorable moments.

Beach First: Tranquil Beginnings

On the other hand, beginning your Kenyan holiday with a stay at Diani Beach offers a tranquil and rejuvenating start to your journey. After a long flight, you can decompress on the pristine shores, soak in the sun, and enjoy beachfront relaxation. Diani’s serene ambiance provides an opportunity to unwind and adjust to the new time zone, ensuring you’re fully rested before embarking on your safari adventures. Transitioning from the beach to a safari can also be a seamless experience, as you’ll carry the sense of relaxation with you while immersing yourself in the thrill of the wild. This sequence allows you to conclude your holiday with the excitement of a safari, creating a memorable grand finale to your Kenyan adventure.

Whether you choose to begin with the thrill of a safari or the tranquility of Diani Beach, your Kenyan holiday promises to be a remarkable journey filled with diverse experiences and lasting memories. The best sequence ultimately depends on your preferences and the kind of atmosphere you desire to start or end your adventure in Kenya.

On safari, you may be fortunate enough to witness incredible moments like the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests and zebras cross the Masai Mara in search of greener pastures. Witnessing a cheetah’s lightning-fast chase or a lioness teaching her cubs to hunt are moments that can become cherished memories. In Amboseli, you can capture the iconic image of elephants against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro . Whether it’s a rare sighting or an everyday wildlife encounter, both your beach and safari experiences in Kenya promise to be filled with remarkable and unforgettable moments.

I tried TUI’s new safari holiday package – here are the five things first-timers always do wrong

  • Kara Godfrey , Deputy Travel Editor
  • Published : 9:01, 30 Mar 2024
  • Published : Invalid Date,

TUI has launched brand new beach-safari holidays this year - and I was one of the first to try them out.

The new holiday package is part of TUI's all-year-round trips to Kenya, which include a range of options for Brits warning to go on safari.

I tried TUI's new safari packages - and learned a lot along the way

As a more affordable option, the new Kenya tours include both a beach break and longer safari excursions.

I went on a three-day taster of the safaris , visiting Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Amboseli National Park.

As a safari-first-timer, I was left blown away by what we saw.

This included baby lion cubs on the road, galloping giraffes and elephants lazing at the watering hole.

But as a first-timer, I also made a number of mistakes which I had no idea about before going.

Here are the five things I did wrong - and you can avoid too to make the trip perfect.

1. Drinking too much water

Kenya can hit highs of 41C in the summer, remaining above 20C even in winter.

And while it can be tempting to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated, this won't end well during long safari drives.

Affordable UK theme park to reduce ticket entry price next month - here's why

There are no bathrooms within the safari parks - apart from at the entrance - and you hardly pop out of the vehicle to relive yourself.

This meant a lot of uncomfortable journeys - so be cautious about guzzling the drinks.

2. Not taking a good enough camera

These days, a smartphone can take some amazing pictures without needing a proper camera and lens.

But the majority of safari drives, you will see animals far away, and only seen by binoculars.

So you can forget getting any pictures even with the latest iPhone without zooming all of the way in for a grainy shot.

If you do have a camera with a good zoom - make sure to pack it.

3. Not wearing long layers

Travellers are urged to take malaria medication when in Kenya, with a number of different types to take.

However, being a pale Brit who burns, I normally always wear suncream .

Yet my usual applying every 45 minutes or so failed me - as Malarone makes your skin much more sensitive to sunlight.

By the end of day one, I was badly burnt on my arms and chest - so make sure to reapply the factor 50, or even better, cover up with long shirts and trousers.

You can see some amazing animals - but don't expect good pictures with just your iPhone

4. Not sleeping in the afternoon

The middle of the day is the worst time to go on safari - as most animals will be resting somewhere away from the tracks.

This means the most popular times for safari is sunrise and sunset.

This also means you can expect early morning starts as early as 5:30am to get the best views.

It also means you could find yourself in the park around dinner time, meaning a late dinner and late bedtime.

I ended up forgetting to take an afternoon siesta, so was often running on around 4-5 hours sleep every day.

5. Expecting to see all of the Big Five

Unless you are going on TUI's longest safari holiday of 15-days, you are unlikely to see all of the animals you want.

The big five consist of the African elephant, lions, leopards, rhinos and bison.

Elephants are easy to come by, although the rest are much harder to spot.

I only saw three of the five on my trip, and we were later told that rhinos are too rare for most to see these days.

We were lucky enough to see lions and lion cubs too, something the rangers said they hadn't spotted in six months.

And some drives may not see much for a while. We often saw antelope, zebra and giraffes, but could easily go more than an hour without anything else.

So don't be too disheartened if you don't see everything - it's very uncommon.

Sunrise safari drives are common - so make sure to nap in the afternoon

Tailor-made Kenya Holidays

Nothing says safari like Kenya. Whether you’re exploring the famed Maasai Mara, bird-encrusted Rift Valley lakes or arid Samburu plains, it’s as if you’ve stepped into a wildlife documentary. Watch the drama of daily life unfold from your 4×4, providing a front-row seat for big cat hunts and herd migrations, your days dictated by the rhythms of the wild. You’ll rise with the sun to see its first rays warm the savannah from a hot air balloon, then watch it set in red-gold splendour beneath an acacia tree while sipping an icy G&T. Meanwhile, evenings in the Kenyan bush are made for sharing safari stories around the campfire, the sky lit by a tapestry of stars, or for exhilarating night drives where the pinpricks of nocturnal animal eyes pierce the darkness.

Many are drawn to Kenya for its romantic Out of Africa associations and show-stopping headliners: Big Five sightings, Kilimanjaro views and million-strong herds of wildebeest during the Great Migration. Then there’s the soft white sands and warm waters of Kenya’s palm-fringed coast that provide a perfect end to your adventure. As you’ll find out though, it’s the tiny details and the people who call these timeless landscapes home that will really sear Kenya into your soul. It’s the humble dung beetles you’ll spot on a walking safari with a Samburu guide, the scarlet-robed Maasai chief who’ll teach you about the Mara’s medicinal plants and meeting the lesser-known Pokot tribesmen as they shepherd cattle on the Laikipia plains. Then there’s the market sellers in Nairobi peddling colourful kanga fabrics and the fishermen who navigate white-sailed dhows over Indian Ocean waves.

Let our Kenya specialists bring your dream African safari to life, selecting the best wildlife experiences, luxury camps and cultural excursions the country has to offer. Be it tailor-made travel or a shared small group safari experience they’ll shape your ideas into a holiday that’s just right for you.

Tipping : Has become customary in up-market hotels, many of which will have a tip box in reception. It’s normal to tip bellhops an additional USD$ 1 per bag and to leave a 10 percent tip for great service in tourist restaurants. When you’re on safari, your tour manager or a printed guide in your lodge will explain how to tip correctly. As a general rule, budget around USD$ 10-15 for a safari guide/driver and USD$10-15 for Lodge/Camp staff tip (per person, per day) to be paid at the end of your activity/stay.

Etiquette:   Kenyans love small talk and long greetings complete with a friendly handshake but as a rule, women should only shake hands with men in formal settings. When chatting, be sure to ask after the person’s health and family before you settle into the main conversation. In Kenya, ultimate respect is given to elders in the community and hissing isn’t considered rude, it’s simply a way to attract someone’s attention. However, be careful not to point your finger at anyone and always ask before taking photos of locals and refrain from taking any of government buildings, military personnel or political demonstrations.

Religions : Christianity is the main religion in Kenya, brought over by missionaries in the 19 th century. While around 85 percent of the population identify as Christian, around 11 percent are Muslim due to Arabic traders who settled in Kenya’s coastal ports as far back as the 8 th century. Alongside these key religions, many Kenyans have indigenous beliefs that are unique to their specific ethnic group.

Use of plastic: The law bans the use, manufacture, and importation of all single-use plastic bags. Travellers arriving in Kenya with duty-free plastic bags will be required to leave them at the airport. The government however confirms that reusable zip lock bags are permitted. Plastic bottled water may be provided in vehicles although to stay hydrated on the go, we recommend travelling with a personal, reusable bottle which you can refill at airports, hotels and lodges.

Visas: You can look up the latest advice on https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/kenya . Please be aware that this information can change at short notice.

Vaccinations: Health risks vary depending on the destination so it’s essential to check the specific vaccination and hygiene requirements for Kenya on the NHS Fit for Travel website .

Kenya is a year-round destination in terms of sunshine and wildlife sightings. However, it’s best to avoid the Long Rains, which stretch from April to May and can cause roads to become impassable. The most popular time to visit is during the Great Migration between July and September, when you can watch millions of herd animals, pursued by fierce predators, flood the Maasai Mara. Visit between December and March and you’ll enjoy hot, dry weather that draws animals to key watercourses for easier viewing.

Most Kenya trips begin and end in Nairobi, which is connected to the country’s national parks and coastline by a vast road network. The colonial railway system has received a funding boost in recent years and a high-speed Nairobi to Mombasa line will whisk you to the coast in just four and a half hours. Otherwise, getting around by bus or private car can be a long, arduous task so if you’re short on time, hop on a domestic flight. Carriers like Kenya Airways and AirKenya serve regional cities and some swanky lodges even have private airstrips.

No doubt you’ll spend plenty of time on safari, bumping across the plains in a jeep with a private driver and guide. When it comes to boats in Kenya, ferries will shuttle you across Lake Victoria and traditional dhows with white sails, originally brought over by traders, are great for exploring the coastline. As you travel through Kenya’s towns and cities, you’ll notice plenty of matatus, Nissan minivans that act as cheap shared taxis for locals, which are often painted in wacky designs. Matatus are usually crowded and are rarely used by tourists, although classic three-wheeled tuk tuks can be good for a quick ride.

Unless you’re dining in Nairobi’s international eateries or lavish safari lodges with five-star spreads, expect dining in Kenya to be a simple, carb-heavy affair. Most dishes revolve around potatoes, rice and the country’s signature doughy porridge, ugali, which is made from cassava flour or maize. Nyama choma, barbequed meat, is as close as it gets to a national dish and is usually accompanied by a healthy serving of ugali. When it comes to sweet treats, there’s plenty of tropical fruit and many hotels offer decadent afternoon teas, while locals love deep-fried mandazi cakes.

The most flavourful aspect of Kenya’s cuisine is its Indian fare, which was brought over by ancient Arabic traders who settled along the coast. Enjoy plenty of fragrant curries and biriyanis infused with coconut, tamarind and spices, served with fluffy pilau rice and chewy chapatis. Samosas are often eaten as quick, street-side snacks alongside mini kebabs and cassava chips. Along the coast and Lake Victoria region, you can also expect freshly-caught seafood on the menu. This is all washed down with the national drink, chai, and plenty of icy Tusker Beer.

Kenya is famed for its intricate wooden carvings, which usually come in the form of animal statues and kitchenware. The Makonde and Kamba artisans are some of the country’s most famous, with the latter also producing detailed woven baskets made from sisal. It’s best to buy straight from communities and local markets if you can. Most towns and villages will have a market or two heaving with carvings, as well as regalia aimed at tourists, such as colourful beads, drums, shields and even mock-traditional tribal spears.

You’ll be expected to haggle for your purchases. Start by knocking the price down by half and then negotiating up to a mutually-agreeable price, but always do so with a smile and after engaging in some all-important small talk. If you’re looking for typical African fabrics, brightly-printed swaths of Khanga, Kitenge and Kikoi cloth can be easily found, although much is imported. Team this with beaded sandals and some striking metal jewelry. Nairobi’s huge markets, including Gikomba and Kariokor, are a particular treasure-trove.

As well as observing the main Christian holidays, Kenya’s calendar is dotted with cultural and tribal festivities. The three-day Lake Turkana Cultural Festival in August is a favourite. Devised to bring together and celebrate the 14 diverse communities that live around the lake, this festival is bursting with colourful costumes, music and dance. Similarly, the UNESCO-listed Swahili coastal town Lamu hosts a cultural festival in November, complete with show sailing, carnivals and plenty of food.

While you’re travelling in Kenya, expect local businesses to close for national holidays, many of which commemorate Kenya’s historical moments. Madaraka Day on June 1 st marks the day Kenya shed its colonial British rule in 1963, while Jamhuri Day on December 12 th celebrates full independence. In some areas, especially along the coast, Ramadan and the Muslim festivals of Id al-Fitr and Maulidi may also affect your travel plans.
