Learn more about South Korea

Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighboring countries in Asia, with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasizes respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernized culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a capital economic standing similar to that of countries such as the United States, Japan, and various countries in Western Europe.

You can’t go to South Korea for shopping and not stop in Seoul – the country’s premier destination for all things fashion, electronics, street food and skincare. Some notable districts/destinations where you can shop ‘til you drop include:

  • Myeongdong (shopping district)
  • Dongdaemun Market (shopping center)

Top 5 culinary delicacies of South Korea

1. bibimbap.

As one of Korea's standout dishes, bibimbap is a tasty concoction of meat, vegetables, egg, and rice. Soy sauce, chili paste, garlic, and sesame oil all add flavor to this amazingly colorful dish found everywhere in Korea.

Kimchi is hailed as a nutritional powerhouse - packing a healthy punch of nutrients, vitamins, and beneficial bacteria that makes it one of the world's healthiest superfoods. But most people don't eat these fermented vegetables for health reasons - it's the uniquely, tasty flavor and versatility that makes kimchi so popular in Korean cooking.

These delicious, savory pancakes are a standard of Korean cuisine. With hundreds of different varieties, jeon can be served with red meat, chicken, seafood, vegetables, tofu, and even edible flowers.

Similar to sushi, these highly popular rice-based morsels feature fish, beef, or crab, wrapped in seaweed with pickled or fresh vegetables. Available all over Korea, they are the perfect snack on the run or quick, cheap lunch to enjoy between sightseeing.

Arriving in Korea by the way of Mongolia, mandu are essentially boiled, steamed, or pan-fried dumplings. A cheap, street food favorite, mandu can be filled with everything from pheasant to tofu, cucumber, beef, and beyond. Try out these foods on our 8 day South Korea Real Food Adventure.

How to choose the best Korea tour package

By: Author Sylvia

Posted on Last updated: September 18, 2023

To find the best Korea tour package we analyzed several tours in detail.

We looked at several aspects such as the group size and the itinerary. We didn’t do any of these tours ourselves so we don’t share any personal experiences.

What we do is give you, at a glance, a handy overview of all the important aspects of these tours so that you can choose the one that best suits your needs.

We traveled  independently throughout the country.  We found some inspiration in these tours and created our own. We put a lot of time in preparing for this trip.

Creating your own trip gives you more freedom to explore the country at your own pace but if you don’t like to do your own planning, or if you simply don’t have the time, these tours are an excellent alternative.

All these tours roughly follow the same route that we did and will take you along many highlights of South Korea.

There are several different South Korea tour packages.  We covered the 4 that appealed most to us because of their good itinerary.  We give the pros and cons of each of the tours.

But let’s start this article by highlighting some points in favor of a Korea package tour.  Despite the fact that we like to travel independently, there are situations where it is more interesting to join an organized tour.

The Tripitaka Koreana is composed of 81,341 printing woodblocks made to repulse the Mongolian Army Invasion with support of Buddha.

After visiting the temple, you will transfer to Andong Hahoe Village, which has preserved the housing architecture and the village structure of the Joseon Dynasty. Unlike other traditional villages, the Hahoe Village is still inhabited by residents, making it an authentic and unique experience. The village has become world-famous for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain several years ago.

Finally, you will transfer to Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province, which hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics and is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Every winter, millions of tourists come to enjoy the snow-covered hills and slopes.

Day 9 Pyeongchang Gangneung Seoul

This park is known for its breathtaking views, where the peaks break through the clouds and jade-like water flows through the valleys. What people love about 7 day south korea tours.

One of the most memorable and enjoyable tour I have done . Our tour Director was excellent , made sure everyone are safe, remind each day and stops of our cellphones, hats, bags , shopped items and etc.. has a very positive attitude, very knowledgable in what he does and he is funny too. He really takes care of the group and has a lot of patience , considerations in every member of this tour group requests and attitudes :) Thankful and grateful too our Tour Driver who made sure we are safe in each places we travel. God Bless you both and Hanna Tour . Please make one for Japan too specially planning for the lunch and dinner meals. I love all the meals we had , Superb :)
great overview of Korea, guide was knowledgable and friendly, value for money as many delicious and authentic meals were included. Hotels were modern and comfortable. My only complaint was the hotel in Seoul was not as well located as it could have been a bit far from the main sites. However for the price this was an extremely good value tour and I enjoyed it very much and would have no hesitation in recommending it.
I would like to mention a couple of things, which would have improved my experience. More time should be allowed at most attractions. I felt rushed. There was not enough information about the country and the attractions during the tour.

Lilium (LILM) inks new partnership to bring eVTOL jet rides to the South of France

Avatar for Scooter Doll

eVTOL jet developer Lilium has signed another pivotal partnership overseas that will bring aviation technology operations to the South of France and possibly other parts of Europe. The advanced air mobility startup is working with UrbanV out of Italy, and Aeroports de la Côte d’Azur forge to implement a vertiport network in the French Riviera, which could very well be the first region in Europe to enable regional eVTOL travel.

Lilium  ($LILM)  is a Munich-based startup founded in 2015 that specializes in Regional Air Mobility (RAM). The company has remained steadily on our news radar as it continues to expand its footprint of development teams across Europe and the United States.

In addition to expanding its own staff of aerospace engineers and regional offices, Lilium has continued to secure partnerships around the globe to establish eVTOL jet operations now that its aerial technology has gained design authorization from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

This past February, Lilium announced a partnership to bring eVTOL operations to Asia, beginning in the Philippines . Earlier this month, the startup secured a firm order from UrbanLink to put at least 20 of its eVTOL jets into service around South Florida .

Today, Lilium has announced yet another operational eVTOL partnership, this time overseas in the South of France – a popular travel destination that sees 11 million tourists visit each year.

eVTOL jet

eVTOL jets to operate in France and beyond by 2026

According to details shared by Lilium earlier today, it has established a new partnership with Italian vertiport network operator UrbanV and Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur (ACA), the agency responsible for managing Nice Côte d’Azur airport, the second largest airport in France.

Together, the new partners intend to develop and implement a vertiport network across the South of France to support regional eVTOL jet travel across popular destinations, including Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Golfe de Saint-Tropez, Aix-en-Provence, and Marseille. Franck Goldnadel, Chairman of the Board for Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur, spoke to the potential of this new partnership:

This collaboration with Lilium together with our subsidiary UrbanV marks an important step in the transformation and decarbonization of regional air mobility. Our territory offers a unique opportunity to fly over the sea to directly connect the main economic, cultural or tourist destinations. A complementary alternative to the helicopter, the eVTOL has its place in the air transport offered from Nice Côte d’Azur, laboratory of the airport of tomorrow, second platform in France and gateway to and exit from a landlocked territory.

In addition to Nice Côte d’Azur airport, Lilium will help integrate eVTOL vertiports in other areas of France, such as Cannes Mandelieu Airport and Golfe de Saint-Tropez Airport. Furthermore, other locations, including Sophia Antipolis, Aix-en-Provence, and Marseille, are being considered.

The eVTOL startup says it is already engaged in talks with several regional aviation operators interested in purchasing its all-electric jets to transport tourists across those pending vertiports.

The French Riviera, better known as the Côte d’Azur region, has already committed to offsetting its emissions and reaching carbon net neutrality by 2030. Lilium hopes its eVTOLs and insight into vertiport infrastructure can not only help lower local emissions but bring faster and quieter aerial travel to tourists in France. Lilium CCO Sebastien Borel, wen on:

As a truly European company based in Munich, Germany, with flight testing in Spain and with nascent roots in France, Lilium is extremely proud to be able to assist in the creation of the first regional eVTOL network in the South of France and the first commercially viable network in the EU. We see an enormous potential in this region and cannot wait to see our Lilium Jet fly there soon!

eVTOL operations are expected to begin in the South of France sometime in 2026.
