Venice Canals

The 8 best things to do in Venice Beach

Get to know L.A.’s eclectic beachfront neighborhood with these things to do in Venice Beach, both on and off the boardwalk

Michael Juliano

Look past the T-shirt shops and street performers  and you’ll find just enough things to do in Venice that are downright pleasant and—dare we say—borderline charming.

For starters, you might wonder: Is Venice Beach actually worth visiting? We’d say yes, with a few caveats. Many visitors make a beeline for the grungy Venice Boardwalk, an admittedly iconic L.A. attraction , but a kind of disappointing one. There’s so much more to see beyond the boardwalk, from a swanky canal community to destination-worthy Venice restaurants  to patches of sand that rank among L.A.’s best beaches —and for all those reasons we’d say the beachside neighborhood is ultimately worth your time.

Whether you’re visiting from out of state or just across town (which thanks to L.A. traffic can feel like you’ve crossed state lines), these are the things to do in Venice that we recommend adding to your itinerary.

Best things to do in Venice

Stroll along the Venice Canals

1.  Stroll along the Venice Canals

  • Things to do

The Venice Canals offer a completely different side of the famed beachfront neighborhood. Take a stroll through these three canal-lined blocks of Dell Avenue—hence the name, Venice—and you’ll discover an idyllic scene: arching pedestrian bridges, charming beach houses, bunches of ducklings and the occasional paddle boarder. Though you won’t find boat rentals anywhere along the canals, you can bring your own non-motorized vessel to tour the neighborhood at water level (enter via the launch ramp at Venice Boulevard).

Watch the bustling scene at the Venice Skate Park

2.  Watch the bustling scene at the Venice Skate Park

  • Parks and gardens

When surfers were bored with flat waves—like Venice’s legendary Z-Boys—they took to the sidewalks and thus birthed skateboarding in the process. While this more recently constructed skate park, built in 2009, doesn’t really factor into that history, it has quickly become one of the most iconic skateboarding spots—chalk that up to its photogenic palm trees and a location only steps from the shore. Watch from the fences and you’re sure to see a bustling scene, oftentimes with a skate video shoot in the process.

Step inside the Mosaic Tile House

3.  Step inside the Mosaic Tile House

  • price 1 of 4

When artists Cheri Pann and Gonzalo Duran first moved into their Venice home, it was nothing more than a simple, rather drab house. But over the couse of a decade, the couple transformed their live-work space into a spectacular collage of colorful tiles, stone and clay wares. You can explore the space on Saturdays from noon to 3pm—you’ll just need to make an email reservation first  ($20).

Dine and shop along posh Abbot Kinney

4.  Dine and shop along posh Abbot Kinney

  • Walks and tours

While Venice’s claim to fame may be its beach culture, the ’hood’s most stylish block, Abbot Kinney Boulevard, has some of the city’s best boutiques, galleries, restaurants and bars ( Felix  and Gjelina , most notably). The posh neighborhood manages to keep things pretty casual, so feel free to bike over from the beach and peruse the storefronts.

People watch on Venice Beach and the Boardwalk

5.  People watch on Venice Beach and the Boardwalk

If there’s one thing the Venice Boardwalk is good for, it’s people watching. This pedestrian walkway (and its parallel bike path ) effectively continues from the southern end of Santa Monica Beach without a break. Unlike its posh neighbor to the north, though, Venice is far more stocked with T-shirt stands, pot shops and questionable street performers, alongside the pumped-up gym obsessives who work out at Muscle Beach. It’s not entirely without its charms: It’s always fun to watch the wheeled action at the skate park  and there are a couple of worthwhile eateries, like the Waterfront , Dudley Market  and the nearby Great White . Plus, the beach here is particularly soft and wide, with great views of the mountains.

Flip through some pages at Small World Books

6.  Flip through some pages at Small World Books

Surrounded by bad beach food and throngs of people, this little shop has been an oasis of literary calm for more than five decades. Their local author selection is right up front, so check out the local talent before perusing the aisles, where you’ll find a number of hard-to-find independent imprints, along with the more usual suspects.

Have a drink at sunset atop the High Rooftop Lounge

7.  Have a drink at sunset atop the High Rooftop Lounge

  • Cocktail bars
  • price 2 of 4

Though L.A.’s rooftop bar offerings have stepped up in recent years, they’re still surprisingly sparse along the coast. That makes this stalwart, stationed atop the Hotel Erwin, a relative rarity: a picturesque rooftop bar (and one that takes reservations, no less) barely a block from the beach that’s as perfect for day drinking as it is for getting wrapped up in a blanket around sunset.

Gawk at bodybuilders at Muscle Beach

8.  Gawk at bodybuilders at Muscle Beach

  • Historic buildings and sites

When the original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica disappeared in the ’60s, this competing spot in Venice arose to fill the void. Since then, it’s morphed into a voyeuristic gym for chiseled bodybuilders, where curious onlookers can watch from outside the fence of the postmodern, dumbell-shaped building or from the stands at the competition stage.

Paula Martinelli

From the famous beaches to the iconic boardwalk, to the pier and street art, to trendy hotspots, and to a large variety of restaurants and bars, there are plenty of cool things to do in Venice Beach!

Venice is  a neighborhood   of the city of Los Angeles , and it was founded in 1905 around a canal system modeled after the famous ones in Venice, Italy. Today Venice Beach is a lively tourist city  where the main streets are always crowded and a place where people love to enjoy not outdoor activities.

Whether you’re looking for some fun in the sun, Venice Beach has plenty to explore. Now, I am happy to share with you this list of cool things to do in Venice Beach, plus you will find great tips and helpful information to also make you fall in love with this place.

20. Taste some craft beers at a local brewery is one of the best things to do in Venice Beach

What to pack when you visit venice beach.

Things to do in Venice Beach California

Top Things to do in Venice Beach

1. go on a group surfing lesson at venice beach.

Surfing has to be one of the coolest sports around and there’s no better place to learn than Venice Beach. The best way to get started is by taking a surfing lesson, as you’ll be taught skills by a professional instructor.

Whether you’re a total beginner or you’ve got some experience, this group surfing lesson is a great option.

All equipment is provided for you including a wetsuit and surfboard, and the groups usually consist of 5-6 people which is the perfect size. You’ll spend around 40 minutes training on the beach, before hitting the waves with your instructor!

2. Grab breakfast at the Egg Slut

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day – especially if you’re going to be spending a full day exploring.

During your trip to Los Angeles , I’d recommend heading to the Egg Slut (weird name I know). However, it’s just a quote that was used by Anthony Bourdain and has now stuck!

This place is famous for its egg sandwiches and is one of the top things to do in Venice Beach for foodies.

The sandwich consists of cheesy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, sriracha mayo, and a toasted brioche bun so what’s not to love?

Things to do in Venice Beach California

3. Walk along Venice Beach Boardwalk

Walking along this iconic boardwalk is one of the best things to do in Venice Beach! Stretching along the vibrant oceanfront, the Venice Beach boardwalk is one of the most beautiful walks in the area. It’s also the best way to explore!

Along the way, you’ll get to stop off at a variety of cafes, shops, and other unique attractions so leave plenty of time to just wander along. The iconic Venice Beach sign marks the entrance to the boardwalk from Windward Avenue and is one of the most photo-worthy spots in the neighborhood.

PRO-TIP: Take advantage that you are at one of the most famous beaches and join a Venice Beach 2-hour group surfing lesson , also recommended for beginners. Or you can join a fun gui ded bike tour to explore some of the best sights such as Venice Beach, Santa Monia, and the Venice Canals

Things to do in Venice Beach

4. Test your strength at Muscle Beach

Now we are talking about – as a  bodybuilder athlete myself , I don’t have to say how much I love this place! This is the “Home of Bodybuilding” nestled right in the heart of Venice Beach since 1963.

Muscle Beach has been the training ground for some of the most successful bodybuilders in the world including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu , so it’s easy to see why it’s got such a great reputation.

You can pay for a day pass here if you fancy hitting the weights, or you can simply just sit back and watch some of the bodybuilders hit personal bests. Either way, it’s a must-visit for any Los Angeles itinerary !

Things to do in Venice Beach California

5. Visit the Venice Canals

Although not as beautiful as the canals in Venice, this is still a super cool place to visit.

LA’s Venice Canals were designed in 1905 to bring Italian culture into America. These canals were once one of the most popular attractions in Venice Beach, and gondolas were even imported over from Italy.

Today, the gondolas are gone but it’s still a great spot to relax – especially if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the oceanfront. During your time in Venice Beach, make sure you allow yourself an hour or two to explore the area and wander along these interesting canals.

Things to do in Venice Beach California

6. Shop at the Kinney Boulevard

If you’re a shopaholic then I can guarantee you’ve heard of Kinney Boulevard. This mile-long street is just minutes away from the beachfront and offers fantastic shopping opportunities and great eateries.

Some of the most iconic stores along the boulevard include Ananda , The Stronghold , Burro , and Scotch & Soda .

If you’re looking for something to eat you’ll also be spoilt for choice! However, I’d recommend heading to Felix Trattoria for some handmade pasta. Going on a shopping spree at Kinney Boulevard is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Venice Beach CA.

PRO-TIP: Every first Friday of the month at 5 pm the street becomes a festival, filled with live music and the L.A. Premier Food Truck Event, with dozen of food trucks.

Things to do in Venice Beach California

7. Take a walk along Venice Pier is the TOP thing to do in Venice Beach

If you head to the Southern part of Venice Beach you’ll come across the pier. Although it’s just a simple fishing pier, it’s still a great place to admire the spectacular views and watch surfers below catch some waves.

The walk along the pier is 1,300 ft (396m) and you’ll need your camera for this one – especially if you head there for sunset as the colors are insane. If you’re lucky, you might even get to spot dolphins from here too! This is one of the more relaxing things to do in Venice Beach, so make sure you include it in your itinerary.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

8. Go on an electric bike tour of Venice Beach (& Santa Monica)

There’s a lot to see in Venice Beach so heading out on a bike is the perfect way to explore.

This 3-hour electric bike tour will take you through Venice Beach and show you some of the most popular sites including the Venice Canals, Muscle Beach, and Venice skatepark.

You’ll also get to cycle through Santa Monica and admire the iconic pier, Santa Monica Beach, and the Marion Davies Guesthouse.

As you’ll be on an electric bike you can choose whether to cycle or not, making this tour suitable for all fitness levels. However, the tour is designed for riders aged 14+ so keep this in mind if you’re traveling as a family.

9. Enjoy one of Venice’s fire sunsets from a rooftop lounge

As I mentioned before, Venice has some epic sunsets! There are plenty of awesome places to watch the sun go down, but none of them offer views like Hotel Erwins’ Rooftop Lounge.

It’s been voted the best rooftop lounge in Venice Beach, and one of the best in all of Los Angeles. With epic views, delicious menu items, and an extensive drinks menu – it’s no wonder!

High Rooftop Lounge also offers happy hour discounts, so take full advantage of this. Trust me – watching a sunset from here is one of the top things to do in Venice Beach, California.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

10. Witness some skills at Venice Skatepark

Venice Skatepark is set back from the Venice Beach boardwalk, so it is found right on the oceanfront. Since its opening in 2009, it’s become a crazy popular skating spot and attracts people from across the United States (if not the world).

With a snake run, and a variety of steps, ramps, and platforms; Venice Skatepark is one of the most challenging courses in the U.S. So if you’re looking for Venice Beach activities and you’re a keen skater – put this at the top of your list!

However, if you’re not into skating you can simply just sit back and watch people show off their insane skills.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

11. Join a Venice Beach sunset walking tour

Heading out on a walking tour is one of the best ways to explore a destination. Not only will you see the best spots, but your guide will tell you everything you need to know about the area.

This Venice Beach sunset walking tour starts from the iconic Venice Beach sign and will take you to plenty of awesome attractions within the neighborhood.

This includes Muscle Beach, the Venice Canals, the pride flag lifeguard tower, and of course Venice Beach Boardwalk. You’ll then get to relax on the beach with a mocktail and snack, whilst watching one of Venice’s epic sunsets.

12. Visit the L.A Louver

If you’re a fan of art and culture then make sure you visit the L.A Louver . This art gallery focuses on contemporary art and was founded in 1975.

It showcases the work of both LA-based and international artists, and there are a variety of fabulous exhibitions throughout the year. You can check out the current exhibitions on the website before planning your visit, and see if any of the artwork catches your eye.

13. Explore the Mosaic Tile House

Visiting the Mosaic Tile House is one of the more unique things to do in Venice Beach. As you walk into the house you’ll be in awe of the colorful tiles and beautiful murals, so take some time to appreciate its beauty.

The whole house is covered in tiles, and the family who lived here has been working on this masterpiece since 1994. If you want to visit this quirky attraction you’ll have to time your visit perfectly, as the Mosaic Tile House is only open on Saturdays between 12 pm and 3 pm.

14. Dine at the Venice Whaler is a classic thing to do in Venice Beach

There’s no shortage of awesome places to dine in Venice Beach. However, if you’re looking for the ultimate ‘LA’ experience then head to the Venice Whaler !

This is one of the go-to places in Venice Beach for food, as it’s famous for its laid-back atmosphere, superb ocean views, and delicious food. During your time at the Venice Whaler make sure you try their awesome fish tacos and grab a Margherita too. Trust me – you won’t regret it.  Dining here is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Venice, California.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

15. Sunbathe on Venice Beach

Now, this may sound like an obvious one, but you’ll be surprised by how many people visit Venice Beach and don’t actually spend time relaxing on the beach itself. Of course, there’s plenty to see in this awesome neighborhood so get your sightseeing done first, and then finish off your trip on the beach.

Grab a blanket, have a picnic and watch the sunset with a beer in hand. This is hands down the BEST way to end your trip to Venice Beach – you can even grab a takeaway from the Venice Whaler if you fancy!

tourist attractions in venice beach california

16. Go on a self-guided tour of the Venice Murals

No trip to Venice Beach is complete without exploring the iconic murals. This neighborhood is home to a tonne of fantastic art pieces and graffiti, so grab your walking shoes and head out on a self-guided tour .

This is one of the top things to do in Venice Beach, so don’t leave it off your itinerary. Some of the best areas to visit for murals in Venice Beach include Lincoln Boulevard, Main Street, Kinney Boulevard, and the boardwalk. You’ll find a tonne of awesome designs ranging from sharks to famous figures, so make sure you keep your camera on you at all times – trust me, you’ll need it!

17. Try out Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is a popular water sport here, and there are plenty of places you can hire a board and take lessons. One of the most popular companies is Paddle Method , and they offer lessons for all levels ranging from beginner to intermediate.

Whether you’re looking for a private lesson or to learn in a group, there’s an option for everyone. You’ll also be in the hands of talented instructors, who will teach you how to paddle board in a safe and fun way!

PRO-TIP: You can book this Kayak and/or paddleboard tour to see sea lions , and explore the beauty of the biggest marina in Los Angeles, the Marina Del Rey – which is a few minutes from Venice Beachq . You have the option to rent a double kayak or a paddleboard, and if you haven’t done it before, the guide will help you to feel comfortable and enjoy the most of this stunning scenario.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

18. Head to the Pacific Resident Theatre for some live music

To finish off one of your days in Venice Beach make sure you head to the Pacific Resident Theatre !

Run by local actors, this theatre has plenty to offer and shows a wide variety of classical productions and lesser-known plays. The Pacific Resident Theatre has been around for over 35 years and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a great play.

You can take a look at their website during your trip to see what type of productions are showing!

19. Explore the Venice Farmers Market

If you’re a big foodie like me then make sure you visit the Venice Farmers Market . The market is found at Venice city hall and runs every Saturday from 8 am. It’s the perfect place to visit if you’re looking for fresh produce, tasty baked goods, and great-quality meats.

You’ll also find a wide variety of other goods too including fresh flowers, plants, spices, and condiments. There are plenty of vendors here so give yourself a good chunk of time to wander around, and treat yourself to some goodies.

There are plenty of awesome breweries in Los Angeles, but the ones located in Venice Beach just hit different!

There is a wide variety to choose from but the most popular options include Beach and Brew , Firestone Walker , and Venice Ale House .

Each of these (and all the other breweries found in Venice Beach) have plenty of delicious craft beers to choose from, so you won’t be short of options. Many of the breweries also serve tasty food so you’ve got something to soak up all that alcohol.

If visiting Los Angeles is on your bucket list, but the costs may scare you away – I have great advice and tips here for you! Yes, it is possible to visit Los Angeles without breaking the bank!

You can find inexpensive hotels, there are some restaurants and cafes that have reasonable prices. I also recommend getting the Go Los Angeles Card or  Los Angeles Sightseeing Flex Pass as these passes start at $83 for one-day grant access to a variety of different attractions. Each pass has slightly different terms and attractions on offer so check carefully to see which will suit you better. This card offers 2 options:

  • All-Inclusive Card: This is the best option as you can save up to 50% of the gate prices for the main attractions in Los Angeles.
  • Build-Your-Own: With this option, you can save up to 20% of the gate prices, and you can choose to see only what is in your interests.

  • Summer dresses:  I recommend at least one  summer dress  as they are versatile to walk during the day or going out in the evening
  • Leggings:  You will need at least one pair. Leggings are your best friend in L.A., as you can wear them pretty much every day (and night too;-))
  • Workout outfit:  Dressing in layers and comfortably is the best rule to explore Los Angeles.
  • Long sleeves shirt and light sweater:  It can get chilly in Los Angeles, even during the summer months. It is always wise to dress in layers!
  • Sunscreen : While you are out exploring, make sure to protect yourself from the sun. I recommend the  Stream 2 Sea Sunscream   and they are reef-safe
  • Sunglasses and hat:  Don’t forget to pack your  pair of sunglasses , you will need them!
  • Swimsuit:  The water may be chilly, but I recommend planning at least a half-day at the beach, so pack that  travel beach bag !
  • Beach Towel:  This  travel towel  is a must to be used at the beach, on a picnic, or even as   a blanket.
  • Day Backpack:  This is a must on your packing list – I have a whole article on the  best backpack for traveling  that I recommend you to check!
  • Reusable water bottle:  Never travel anywhere without a  reusable water bottle . Remain hydrated without wasting single-use plastic bottles!

By: Author Caroline Ikeji

Categories California , Travel Guides , USA

Looking for the best things to do in Venice Beach? From iconic attractions, trendy hotspots, and cool hangouts, here are all the things to check out in LA’s boho beach town.

Venice Beach has always been one of my favorite areas in Los Angeles, because of its funky, eclectic vibe. And with its beaches, iconic boardwalk, street art, trendy hotspots, and more, there are so many fun things to do in Venice Beach!

Most people know Venice as the bohemian yet kinda grungy neighborhood and immediately picture the madness on its famous boardwalk. Sure, it’s touristy AF, but it’s kinda one of those LA bucket list spots that you’ve just gotta experience once.

In recent years though, Venice has shed some of its former reputation to become a booming, trendy hotspot, filled with hip boutiques, restaurants, bars, and some of the most Insta-worthy places in LA . For better or worse, Venice is constantly changing, but there are still signs of its offbeat, free-spirited persona.

Venice is many things – a quintessential beach town, a hub for bohemian artists, a trendy foodie hotspot, hipster enclave, tourist trap…there’s something for everyone here.

About Venice Beach, California

Venice Beach was founded in 1905 by developer Abbott Kinney, who initially had a vision to create a cultural mecca, where people could follow their intellectual pursuits while enjoying the ocean air. The idea, however, flopped and Kinney gave into public demand and set out to create a beachfront resort town, complete with an amusement park and a miniature steam railroad – a “Coney Island of the Pacific.”

He also created a series of canals, with imported gondolas and gondoliers from Venice, Italy (checking them out is one of the top things to do in Venice), which gave the town the nickname the “Venice of America.”

Upon Kinney’s death, the town was left in shambles, unable to govern itself, and voted to become a part of Los Angeles. Because of the discovery of oil nearby, Venice Beach was full of toxic air, polluted water, and became an eyesore.

When World War II ended, so did the oil boom. The area became remodeled, and housing was built for WWII veterans. It was then that bodybuilding became popular in the area, with the original Muscle Beach being established in nearby Santa Monica. Today’s Muscle Beach stands near the iconic Venice Beach Boardwalk, and watching the bodybuilders there is one of the most popular things to do in Venice Beach.

In the 1960s, cheap rent brought over artists, musicians, poets, and hippies, creating the bohemian vibe that Venice became known for. In the 1970s, surfing and skateboarding boomed, and is still very much a part of Venice’s identity.

Today, Venice Beach has become a mecca of cool, home to many trendy shops, restaurants, and bars. It has also become a tech hub. The Venice of today is very much different from the Venice of yesterday – however, you can still see signs of its offbeat, bohemian past throughout the city.

Venice Beach is the second largest tourist attraction in Southern California, after Disneyland, attracting over 10 million visitors per year. It is also home to about 40,000 residents.

When to Visit Venice Beach

As with most locations in Southern California, Venice enjoys year-round sunshine, so there is really no bad time to visit!

Summer brings the hottest temperatures and the longest days, which means more daylight hours to enjoy all the fun things to do in Venice Beach! Keep in mind that Southern California is famous for its “June Gloom” in May and June, which brings overcast skies in the morning (bring a light sweater or jacket) – however, this usually burns off by afternoon.

Spring and fall are, well, pretty much like summer – California doesn’t get much in the way of seasons. Temperatures stay relatively mild in the winter – highs usually hover around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and lows rarely get below the 50s, making Venice Beach the perfect place to escape to for some winter sun. Do note that it does sometimes rain in the winter months.

Getting There and Around

Venice Beach sits on the western end of Los Angeles, about 17 miles from downtown (~30 minutes with no traffic). It is also only 6 miles from the LAX airport, which makes it an ideal place to base yourself during any visit to the Los Angeles area. It is a super easy and relatively affordable (~$20) Uber or Lyft ride from the airport.

Public transportation isn’t great in the LA area, but traffic and especially parking are a giant pain (and expensive) in the Venice area, so I’d avoid driving if possible. You can explore the main areas of Venice on foot, and biking is a great way to get around as well. Otherwise, you can easily get around via Uber or Lyft.

Cool Things to Do in Venice Beach

Experience the madness of the Venice Beach boardwalk

Love it or hate it, hanging out on the boardwalk tops the list of things to do in Venice Beach (and perhaps all of Los Angeles). Its craziness is just one of those things you just have to experience once in your life!

The Venice Beach Boardwalk is dotted with souvenir shops, eateries, kinda sketchy looking medical marijuana dispensaries, and miscellaneous street vendors. It stretches for a mile on the paved Ocean Front Walk, but the busiest part goes from North Venice Boulevard to Park Avenue.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

It is usually a flurry of activity, with tons of street performers and plenty of characters – you’ll see people doing anything from singing, dancing, playing instruments, acrobatics, to people offering kisses and hugs for a dollar. You’ll even see some unusual acts, like people using electric saws and snakes!

Sure, it’s touristy AF and absolute madness, but there’s nothing quite like it – and it makes for some excellent people watching!

Gawk at the bodybuilders on Muscle Beach

Muscle Beach gained fame as the workout gym of celebrity bodybuilders Lou Ferrigno (the original Hulk) and Arnold Schwarzenegger. You can easily spot Muscle Beach from the Boardwalk thanks to a giant mural of the latter, along with a comically large set of dumbbells hanging off the building’s facade (they look fit for gorillas).

Muscle Beach began to call Venice home when the original location in Santa Monica disappeared in the 60s. It still operates as an outdoor gym today, and one of the most popular things to do in Venice Beach is to gawk at the chiseled bodybuilders doing their workouts (you’ll find plenty of tourists and even locals standing around and snapping photos). Bodybuilding competitions are held here as well, and you’ll find a grandstand set up near the competition stage.

Watch the skateboarders at the skatepark

The Venice Skatepark, located on the sand between Windward and Ocean Front Walk, is one of the most iconic skateboarding spots in California. Built in 2009, the 16,000-square-foot skatepark features a variety of elements.

Skateboarding in Venice dates back to the 1970s, when surfers became bored with the flat waves and took to the sidewalks. It was made famous by the legendary Z-Boys, who skated in the area and revolutionized the sport.

Watching skateboarders show off while doing impressive tricks is one of the most fascinating things to do in Venice Beach. You’ll find skaters of all ages, performing all sorts of stunts – even little kids (as someone who cannot stand up on a skateboard without immediately falling off, I am a bit, ok a lot, jealous)!

Check out the cool street art around town

I’m always a sucker for cities with colorful street art (like San Francisco and Lisbon ) – so obviously, one of my favorite things to do in Venice Beach is to check out all the cool murals around town. Venice is home to some of the most Instagram-worthy places in Los Angeles , with an eclectic mix of street art and installations all over town, representing a variety of artists and styles.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

One of the coolest things to do in Venice Beach is to check out the Venice Art Walls , located on the beach between Windward and Market (between the skatepark and basketball courts). Here, you will see an ever-changing assortment of graffiti art by local artists.

The project showcases a mix of street art, murals, and traditional as well as modern graffiti. It is constantly changing, and is sort of like a living history of graffiti art. The walls date back to the 1960s, but they technically only became legal within the last 20 years. You can even see the artists at work here and doing their thing on the weekends – it is absolutely fascinating!

Aside from that, you can see tons of vibrant street art pieces all throughout town. Some of my favorite murals are scattered around Abbott Kinney (which is also mentioned later on this list of best things to do in Venice Beach), but you’ll find tons more in other areas of the city as well.

Here are some of the best murals to check out around Venice Beach:

  • “Bleeding Hearts” aka Love Walls by James Goldcrown : You can find two versions of these spray-painted hearts. The first is off Abbott Kinney, at 471 Santa Clara Ave – the design of this one changes every so often. The second is in front of Joe’s Pizza on the Boardwalk, at 1301 Ocean Front Walk.
  • Geometric wall by Love bErto : Another one of my favorites on Abbott Kinney, near the Bleeding Hearts at 1201 Abbot Kinney Blvd. There is also another Love bErto mural nearby, but it’s in a parking lot and often fenced off.
  • Homage to a Starry Night by Rip Cronk : Venice Beach’s version of the legendary Van Gogh painting stands on the corner of Wavecrest and Ocean Front Walk.
  • Touch of Venice by Jonas Never : This vintage scene is inspired by classic film noir and Orson Wells. You can find it at 21 Windward Avenue

Hang out at the beach

Venice at its core is a beach town, so obviously one of the best things to do in Venice Beach is to at least spend a little bit of time at the beach.

You can chill on the sand, sunbathe, and just chill; or, for those looking to partake in some water sports, there are plenty of recreational options available.

Looking to hit the waves? North of the Venice Pier and lifeguard headquarters, you’ll find the Venice Breakwater, one of the best surf breaks in LA. Built by Abbot Kinney in 1905 to protect his amusement pier, the artificial barrier is the only place on the beach where the waves break on both sides. The sand is said to be the finest for creating the best sand sculptures as well. Private surfing lessons , as well as beginner lessons are also available.

While you are at the beach, be sure to also snap a photo with the colorful Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower, painted in rainbow colored stripes. The tower was painted by artist Patrick Marston, for celebrating Pride Month in 2017. The installation was made permanent to as a symbol of diversity, acceptance, and the LGBTQ community. You can find it on the beach, near Brooks Avenue.

Hop on a bike (and head to Santa Monica)

Venice Beach and its boardwalk is situated along the 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail, also known as the Strand, which stretches from Will Rogers State Beach in the north, to Manhattan State Beach in the south. The section that passes through Venice Beach stretches about two miles.

One of my favorite things to do in Venice Beach is to hop on a bike and cruise along the part of the Strand that goes to Santa Monica. It is an easy, flat 3-mile stretch, which is ideal for all ages and ability levels. It’s just one of those iconic So-Cal things to do!

tourist attractions in venice beach california

You can bring your own bike, otherwise there are tons of bike rental stands set up all along the boardwalk. Rentals usually average around $20/day. For some added fun, you can also partake in this small group tour of Venice and Santa Monica .

Once you reach Santa Monica, you can hang out at the beach, check out the iconic pier and Pacific Park amusement park, or do some shopping at the Third Street Promenade.

Embrace your inner trendsetter on Abbott Kinney

Abbott Kinney Blvd. is THE mecca of cool in Venice, and is often referred to as the “coolest block in America.” The ultra-walkable street stretches for about a mile from Washington Boulevard to Main Street. It is lined with hip boutiques, acclaimed restaurants, and trendy bars. You’ll also find it dotted with cool street art.

Spending an afternoon checking out what’s going on on Abbott Kinney is one of my favorite things to do in Venice Beach. I usually start at one end and make my way to the other, stopping in and out of what catches my eye.

One of my favorite shops on Abbott Kinney is the Toms flagship store. You’ll find all of their products here, as well as a lounge and a cafe. Be sure to stop for a cup of coffee, as it is legit! It is the perfect place to relax and take a little shopping break.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

If you are a stationery and paper goods fiend as I am, be sure to also check out Urbanic , which bills itself as a paper boutique. It’s got a well curated assortment of cards, stationery, journals, wrapping paper, party decor, and much more (it’s a great spot to shop for gifts). I can’t help but pick up a few things every time I’m in there – and I always leave super inspired, ready to tap into the creative side.

Other favorite shops include Burro , which has a mix of gift items, such as jewelry, home goods, stationery, and apparel, that encapsulate the California lifestyle (it’s another great place to shop for gifts!). I also love Piece Collective , firstly for the super Instagrammable triangle facade, but also for their well-curated collection of unique clothing, accessories, and home decor items. Another favorite is Grow Venice , which sells a mix of items to be used outdoors (plants, garden goods, home items, games, gifts, and more) .

Hungry? Eating my way through Abbott Kinney is also one of my favorite things to do in Venice Beach. The street is home to some of the hottest restaurants in town, including Gjelina , the Butcher’s Daughter , and Felix Trattoria . In the mood for a snack? Grab a donut at Blue Star Donuts , or a scoop of ice cream at Salt & Straw (both two of my favorites from Portland , so I’m super happy they both have locations here!).

Explore the Venice Canals

While Venice is primarily known for its beach, one of the best things to do in Venice Beach offers a glimpse into a different side of the city. Just a few blocks east of the beach is the Venice Historic Canal District, a network of six man-made canals inspired by the ones of Venice, Italy.

The canals were built by Abbott Kinney back when founded the city back in 1905, and how it got its nickname of “the Venice of America.” Kinney developed Venice Beach as a waterfront resort, complete with an amusement park and a miniature steam, in addition to the canals.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Originally, the canals covered the entire area between Abbot Kinney, Pacific Avenue, and Venice Boulevard. Most of the canals were filled in 1929, due to the popularity of automobiles, creating some of Venice’s main streets like Windward Avenue and Market Street. The rest of the canals fell into a state of disrepair until 1993, when a multi-million dollar restoration project revitalized the area.

What remains of the canals today covers the area between South Venice Boulevard, Pacific, and Ocean Avenues, and Washington Boulevard. You can access them from the pathways at Venice and Dell, or near Venice and Pacific Avenue.

Walking through the canals is one of the best things to do in Venice Beach, to escape the craziness of the rest of the city. You’ll see an idyllic scene unfold before you, with charming homes, arching bridges, blooming flowers, ducklings, and rowboats. While there are no water tours of the canals, you are allowed to explore at water level with your own non-motorized water vessel – use the launch ramp from Venice Avenue.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

The canals and the surrounding residential district were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Many of the old homes along the canals were also remodeled, and new, modern homes were also built – these homes are prime real estate, going for millions of dollars. I loved seeing all the cute homes in the neighborhood – they all had so much character!

The homes in the area get super dressed up for the holidays, and it is one of the best places to see Christmas lights in LA – it is absolutely magical! There is also an annual holiday boat parade.

Snap a photo with the iconic Venice sign

One of the most iconic sights in town, the Venice sign hangs over Windward Avenue, at Pacific Avenue, and snapping a photo with it is one of the most popular things to do in Venice Beach.

The sign that you see at the intersection today is actually a replica of the one originally installed by Abbott Kinney in 1905. It is a defining symbol of Venice’s past and present, and today the trademark for the sign is owned by the Venice Chamber of Commerce..

The sign lights up at night – it is especially beautiful around sunset. Be careful of oncoming traffic here – it is a busy intersection, so avoid jumping into the middle of the street. However, the intersection has a pedestrian scramble crosswalk, so when the light turns green, all traffic stops, and you can cross in all directions for 30 seconds – this is when you have your chance to get your shot!

It will still likely take several tries to get that perfect snap, and you’ll probably feel super silly to do it, but all of that is part of the fun, making this one of the best things to do in Venice Beach!

Grab a drink and check out the view

While many of LA’s rooftop bars have an urban city vibe, Venice’s own rooftop overlooks the beach. Located inside the Hotel Erwin, the High Rooftop Lounge has won numerous awards for its ambiance and view – therefore, grabbing a drink here and enjoying said ambiance and view is one of the top things to do in Venice Beach.

The best time to come here is around sunset, however, it is the most crowded. As it is one of the most popular things to do in Venice Beach, expect a wait during busy times, i.e. weekend evenings, when it may also have a cover charge.

I’ve found that a better time to come is in the afternoon – we visited on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty chill and there was no wait. They also do weekend brunch with bottomless mimosas as well, if that’s your thing.

Other things to do in Venice Beach

Looking for even more things to do in Venice Beach? Consider checking out the below as well:

  • Tour the Mosaic Tile House: The home and studio of artists Cheri Pan and Gonzalo Duran, the Mosaic Tile House is adorned in thousands of rainbow-hued tiles. This is one of those things to do in Venice Beach that has been on my list for awhile, but I haven’t been able to check it out yet – the photos look insane though! You can only see the house by booking a tour – more information here .
  • Check out the Binoculars Building : One of Venice’s most unusual buildings stands at 340 Main Street, with a giant set of binoculars on its facade. Designed by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, the binoculars sit in front of Google’s LA campus. The building itself is also designed by Frank Gehry.
  • Stroll Along the Venice Pier: Venice’s pier is less well-known than some of the others in LA, but taking a casual stroll on it is one of the best things to do in Venice Beach, especially if you are looking to escape the madness of the Boardwalk and surrounding areas. It is especially popular with fishermen, and it is known as one of the best places to watch the sunset.

Where to Eat in Venice Beach

Venice is home to some of LA’s hottest restaurants, so obviously, eating my way through town is one of my favorite things to do in Venice Beach (as it tends to be my favorite activity in any place I visit, like Seattle , Mexico City , and Costa Mesa ).

Here are my favorite picks for places to eat in Venice:

tourist attractions in venice beach california

The Butcher’s Daughter

The Butcher’s Daughter bills themselves as a “vegetable slaughterhouse.”  Located on on Abbott Kinney, it has a beautiful space, with rustic accents, hanging plants, and high ceilings. Their menu is also absolutely delicious, with plant-based versions of popular favorites, fresh-squeezed juices, and more. I love coming for brunch here, and eating on their patio. 1205 Abbot Kinney Blvd

Gjelina is a bustling spot on Abbot Kinney always has a line out the door (reservations are suggested – or come late night). It is well worth the hype – the pizza is the BEST here, with a unique twist on the classics. They have an excellent brunch menu as well (and you must have the toast). If you don’t want to wait for a table, they have a take-away outpost next door as well. 1427 Abbot Kinney Blvd

Eggslut is a popular breakfast joint usually has a line, but once you get your hands on one of their sandwiches, you’ll see what the hype is all about. The brioche buns are perfectly soft, and the eggs super fluffy. Try the Fairfax, which also comes with caramelized onions and sriracha mayo – so, so good! The namesake “Eggslut” is also worth trying, a coddled egg with potato puree in a cute glass jar, served with crostini. 1611 Pacific Ave

C&O Cucina / C&O Trattoria

We recently walked by C&O Cucina and noticed a line out the door, which piqued our interest. C&O has classic Italian fare, which are all solid but not pretentious (as some of the other Italian restaurants in Venice tend to be). You’ll find well-made traditional pastas, pizzas, and more. You’ll also get unlimited garlic knots, which you’ll be OBSESSED with – we were and had 3 refills. This is what they are famous for, and where the hype comes from! C&O Cucina is on Washington Avenue (technically just across the border in Marina del Rey), while C&O Trattoria is located near the boardwalk.

C&O Cucina: 3016 Washington Blvd / C&O Trattoria: 31 Washington Blvd

tourist attractions in venice beach california

The Rose is perfect for brunch, with creative California style spin on brunch favorites (like shrimp and jalapeno grits). It is best enjoyed on their patio. Their coffee is excellent as well. They also have a unique dinner menu, featuring a creative spin on pasta dishes, such as a miso cacio e pepe, and a hamachi collar bowl. Love the hipster decor here as well. 220 Rose Ave

Salt & Straw

Salt & Straw has always been a favorite, so I was excited when they opened up a location on Abbott Kinney. You’ll catch a whiff of the waffle cone and you won’t be able to resist stopping by for some ice cream (seriously, this happens to me every single time). I love their seasonal flavors, which feature a (sometimes unusual) local spin unique to each location. 1357 Abbot Kinney Blvd

Blue Star Donuts

I can never resist donuts, especially if they are as delicious as Blue Star’s! Blue Star originates in Portland as well, but their donuts are waaaay better than that other famous place in Portland. They have some really fun varieties such as PB&J, blueberry bourbon basil, and passion fruit cocoa nibs, and are always so fresh! Try their seasonal flavors as well. 1142 Abbot Kinney Blvd

Night + Market Sahm

Night + Market Sahm is super trendy and serves up a creative take on Thai street food – it reminds me a lot of Pok Pok in Portland . Try the pad kee mao – with pastrami! – and the khao soi, with braised hangar steak (sooo tender). The papaya salad is excellent as well. I loved the funky decor here as well, kinda a vintage 80s theme going on. 2533 Lincoln Blvd

Wurstkuche is a modern, hipster take on a traditional bierhal (like those found in Munich ), and serves up a delicious selection of sausages, ranging from the classic (bratwurst, kielbasa, etc.), to the exotic (i.e. rattlesnake). The fries are a must as well, as is the beer – they have an extensive selection of Belgian taps. 625 Lincoln Blvd

Where to Stay in Venice Beach

tourist attractions in venice beach california

I’ve always been a sucker for colorful places, so I flipped when I first saw photos of the Kinney – it’s a color lover’s dream! The entire property is full of color, style, and a bit of attitude. I’ve stayed at the Kinney twice now (once when I was still living in SF and was in town for a show, and another for a weekend staycation once I moved to the OC ), and have loved it both times!

The Kinney has 68 rooms, all super colorful like the rest of the property, and with retro touches. Rooms come with a super comfy bed, a small sitting area, 55” TV, a mini fridge, and upscale toiletries.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

There’s also a pool, and you can also hang out in the Quad, the Kinney’s courtyard area with fire pits, a ping pong table, and lounge chairs. There’s also a fun BYOB bar area as well! Other amenities include complimentary bike rentals, perfect for exploring the local area.

The Kinney is also conveniently located near some of the best things to do in Venice Beach. It is  about a mile away from the canals and boardwalk, which are both easily accessible via bike or walking. It’s also on a strip with tons of cool restaurants and bars!

Other Places to Stay in Venice Beach

Some other options for accommodations in Venice Beach are below:

  • Hotel Erwin ( Booking.com / Agoda ) : Hotel Erwin is perhaps the trendiest hotel in Venice, and is located right on the Boardwalk, one of the top things to do in Venice Beach. The property has eclectic, contemporary decor, comfortable rooms, and views that cannot be beat.
  • Venice on the Beach Hotel ( Booking.com / Agoda ) : This affordable hotel is just a two minute walk from the beach, making it easily accessible to all the best things to do in Venice Beach. The rooms are comfortable, and have a mini fridge. The property also has a sun terrace. A continental breakfast is included.

What to Pack for Venice Beach

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes : Converse Chucks or Vans Old Skool are local favorites.
  • Flip Flops : A pair of Rainbows are basically a part of the local uniform here (and super comfy).
  • Sunscreen : This one is my favorite and is reef-safe so ideal for using at the beach.
  • Cardigan or light jacket : For overcast mornings or breezy evenings. I usually just throw on a denim jacket (or a hoodie). For winters, a packable puffer is ideal for chilly nights and early mornings.
  • Battery pack :  I never travel anywhere without  this one . It can charge up to five times on one full charge!
  • Reusable water bottle : I have this one on me at all times.
  • Hat : The sun can get super bright during the summer, so I highly recommend having a hat. A straw hat like  this  one not only keeps the sun out of your eyes (and is perfect for the beach), but also looks cute in photos ( this one  is another favorite for photos!), but a standard baseball cap will also do.
  • Beach Tote : like this one

Great list! Venice Beach is so vibrant and you found the best places to highlight that! Looking forward to checking out your restaurant recommendations next time I'm in the area.

I've only made it to Venice once so far. Definitely checked off a few tips already. Loved to wander around the channels and on Abbott Kinney. Still so much more to explore. Eggslut is great! Love the fact that there is a "German-style" Wursthaus! Didn't know that. Definitely saved this for my next visit!

1. Sightsee at the Venice Ocean Front Walk

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Venice is perhaps best known for its iconic boardwalk, the Venice Ocean Front Walk. The Ocean Front Walk stretches two miles and houses street vendors, performers, unique treats, and so much more. You’ll find amazing works of art throughout the boardwalk, from spectacular sculptures to majestic murals. So keep your eyes peeled for these stunning pieces hidden among the crowd here.

If you enjoy shopping, you’ll love the bohemian shops that dot this stretch of Venice Beach. But the Ocean Front Walk is also a great place to go to do some people-watching. Whether it’s street performers showing off their skills, activists petitioning for important causes, or just other unique visitors like yourself, there’s plenty to see in the crowd at Ocean Front Walk.

Best Things to do in Venice Beach, California: Venice Ocean Front Walk

If you’re someone who would rather take in nature than artificial structures, hop over to the Venice Beach Bike Path, also known as the Strand, which runs adjacent to the boardwalk. While you can’t ride a bike on the boardwalk, you can rent a bike or skates there to take them on the bike path. As a part of the Marvin Braude Coastal Bike Trail, you’ll see the beauty of the beaches of Venice when you ride along it.

2. Explore the Picture-Perfect Beach

tourist attractions in venice beach california

After you’re done exploring the boardwalk, head down to the water on Venice City Beach, stretching from the Venice Pier to the border between Venice Beach and Santa Monica. With 238 acres of beach to explore, you and your family can walk along the water and take in the scenic beauty of this destination.

If you’re a surfer, you’ll find that Venice Beach is an ideal spot. If you didn’t bring your board, you can rent one at the Ocean Front Walk. There are also volleyball nets for you to play a game with your travel companions, or you can just float along the water.

Venice Beach, California Bucket List: Venice City Beach

California’s ocean water is often on the chillier side, so if you plan on spending a lot of time in the water, consider renting or packing a wetsuit. If you’re looking for a good fishing spot, you should head to the Venice Pier, where no license is needed.

3. Skate at the Venice Beach Skatepark

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Along the Ocean Front Walk, you’ll find the Venice Beach Skatepark, one of the most iconic Venice Beach attractions. Venice Beach has a long history of skating culture. In fact, Venice Beach is considered the birthplace of modern skateboarding.

Originally developed in the 1940s and 1950s, skateboarding really took off in the ‘70s when a draught left Venice Beach filled with empty pools. Skateboarders would sneak into these pools and use them as their own playground.

Best Things to do in Venice Beach, California: Venice Beach Skatepark

Today, the Venice Beach Skatepark pays homage to the city’s history. In the early 2000s, a group of Venice locals got together to plan this skatepark, which eventually opened in 2009. The course is considered highly challenging, with a snake run, ramps, and two empty pools.

If the park is a little too challenging for your skill level, it’s free to simply watch the masters at work. You’re bound to see some incredible tricks!

4. Work Out at Muscle Beach Venice

tourist attractions in venice beach california

One of the most well-known sections of the Ocean Front Walk is Muscle Beach Venice , so named for its many different ways to work out. From gymnastics equipment on the sand to weightlifting equipment that would challenge even the best bodybuilder, Muscle Beach Venice is a haven for the fitness-minded and one of the most unique things to see in Venice Beach.

Muscle Beach was actually started in Santa Monica, near the famous Santa Monica Pier, back in the 1930s. It was credited as being the birthplace of the United States’ physical fitness boom. Eighteen years after the original was created, Muscle Beach Venice was born.

Unique Things to do in Venice Beach, California: Muscle Beach Venice

Muscle Beach Venice is considered the home of bodybuilding. This outdoor gym has been home to many of the biggest names in bodybuilding, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. If you’d like to work out at the same place as these Hollywood athletes, you can grab a day pass to train here.

5. Go Shopping on Abbot Kinney Boulevard

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Abbot Kinney Boulevard, named for Venice’s founder, is one of the best things to do in Venice if you love art, fashion, and food. This street, which runs over one mile, is a true bohemian paradise, and you’re bound to find shopping and dining to suit every need and every palate. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Venice Beach, you’ll find them in spades on Abbot Kinney Boulevard!

Start your day off at The Butcher’s Daughter , one of the best brunch spots in the area. This restaurant boasts a constantly-changing menu, but everything is guaranteed 100 percent vegetarian. From smoothies to pizza, even the meat lovers in your life will find something they adore here.

For a truly unique souvenir, head to Beauvilla Glass Designs for etched, carved, and stained glass. Or visit Hamilton Press for hand-printed lithographs. For a slightly less expensive souvenir, stop by the vibrantly designed Cabana Goodr , which you can’t miss, thanks to the gigantic pink and green sunglasses on top.

If you’re looking to end your visit here with a sweet treat, stop by Blue Star Donuts , a Portland favorite that’s made its way to Venice. Or head to Salt & Straw for ice cream that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

One of the best times to visit Abbot Kinney Boulevard is during First Friday, one of Los Angeles’s greatest food truck events. Dine on delicious treats as you walk down this iconic boulevard!

6. Float Through the Venice Canals

Unique Things to do in California: Venice Beach Canals, Los Angeles

Venice Beach was greatly inspired by its namesake, Venice, Italy. Today, these two areas of the world have very distinct cultures. Venice Beach has its own personality. However, one way in which these two places are the same is through their famous canals, and floating along the canals is a must on your Venice Beach bucket list.

When Abbot Kinney decided to build the “Venice of America” in Los Angeles, he knew that the new city had to include the original Venice’s famous canals. Today, the canals are made up of six waterways: Grand, Carroll, Linnie, Sherman, Eastern, and Howland.

Must do things in Venice Beach, California: Venice Canals

These waterways form a grid and three residential islands, which are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With the canals being about 1.5 miles in length, there’s a lot to see here.

You could choose to walk along the sidewalks to see the canals. The sidewalks fell into disrepair in the 1940s, but they were thankfully rebuilt in the ‘90s. However, just like you might want to in Venice, Italy, you can get out on the water of these canals. You can schedule a private tour or rent a canoe for you and a partner to explore the waterways on your own.

7. Take a Surfing Lesson

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Venice Beach is a surfer’s paradise. And if you’ve ever thought about getting on a surfboard yourself, taking a surfing lesson is one of the most fun things to do in Venice Beach. While you can rent a surfboard at the Ocean Front Walk, you’ll likely want to have the guidance of an instructor your first time out on the water.

With surfing being such a prominent part of the culture in Venice Beach, it’s no surprise that you have a litany of surfing schools, classes, and instructors to choose from. While you may need to wait until the summer to learn to surf in some areas of the United States, most of these surfing lessons are offered throughout the year in Venice Beach.

Cool Things to do in Venice Beach, California: Surfing Lesson

Many of these surfing schools will allow you to rent all the gear you’ll need, from the surfboard to the wetsuit, preventing you from needing to buy equipment for your first lesson. You can choose from private lessons, with just you and the instructor, or book a group lesson to get your whole family out on the water!

8. Paint on the Venice Art Walls

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Venice Beach is known for its eclectic art scene. People come from all over to see the magnificent murals that paint the walls of these city streets. And if you’re visiting Venice Beach as an artist yourself, getting in on the fun is one of the coolest Venice Beach activities.

The Venice Art Walls are located right on the Ocean Front Walk, nestled into the heart of the city. Curated by the STP Foundation, the Venice Art Walls are canvases that are free for any artist of any kind to use.

During weekends, artists can bring their own paint and experience a day of art and expression under the California sun. Whether you’re a seasoned street artist or just starting out, all are welcome.

Spots at the Venice Art Walls are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so be sure to arrive early. Because painting on these walls is technically vandalism by law, you need a permit to be an artist here. You can apply for one online, but permits are also offered on-site at the Venice Art Walls.

Painting at the Venice Art Walls is one of the coolest things to do in Venice. If you’d rather relax and watch someone else work on their masterpiece, you’re free to sit back and enjoy the show.

9. Take a Street Art Tour

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Outside of the Venice Art Walls, there’s plenty more unique art to find on these streets. Murals decorate many of the buildings and streets here, but there are a few places where you’ll find a large number of paintings.

One such street is Lincoln Boulevard, where you’ll find pieces like Resurrection of an Angel and Silent Star Spoke Louder Than Words . You’ll find even more work near Rose Avenue, including the famous Ballerina Clown statue on the corner of Rose and Main Street. And if you continue on to Main Street, you’ll stumble across one of the strangest buildings in Venice, one with a giant pair of binoculars adorning the entrance.

You can take your own self-guided walking tour to do some street art sightseeing. Or you can book a walking tour with someone who will give you more history of how these iconic works came to be. Either way, seeing the street art is one of the must-do things in Venice Beach for anyone who loves unique art.

For a very active food tour, you can schedule a Bike and Food Tour , where you’ll hop aboard a bike and take in the sights around Venice Beach and Santa Monica. You’ll get fresh-pressed juice, a picnic, and finish off the day with Salt & Straw ice cream.

Or you can stay close to Abbot Kinney Boulevard for a four-course meal through the many restaurants on the famous street. There are so many food tours in the area, so you have your choice of what works best for you and your fellow travelers.

13. See Sea Creatures at the Venice Oceanarium

The Venice Oceanarium is a “Museum Without Walls.” This non-profit is dedicated to teaching about ocean preservation and exploration to adults and kids alike. They run several programs throughout the year that offer hands-on fun and education.

Every Sunday, you’ll find the Pop-Up on the Pier exhibit at the Venice Pier. You’ll gather data with water testing kits, observe seawater samples under microscopes, and make sea life come to life with artwork and poetry. They also host Shoreline Discovery Walks to explore the sea beyond and beneath the pier.

As a part of a tradition that was developed in 1995, the Oceanarium hosts a weekend-long marathon reading of Moby Dick . This free event is always in November and marks the start of the California gray whale migration. Stop by for a few chapters, or set up shop on the beach for the whole weekend.

19 of the best things to do in Venice Beach California that you won’t want to miss

We’ve been to Los Angeles a few times now . And every time we visit we get super excited about all the things to do in Venice Beach. Honestly, if you are planning to visit LA, forget Hollywood, or Downtown LA, Venice Beach is where it is at.

I don’t know if it is because I grew up playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater (does anyone else remember skateboarding around Venice Beach trying not to hit people?), or if I’m just a fan of all things weird and wonderful (also true), but to me at least 1 day in Venice Beach is a must.

It’s way more than just Muscle Beach and obscene slogans on T-shirts, Venice Beach is home to some pretty spectacular sunsets, fantastic beach walks, and a whole bohemian/ alternative vibe that is hard to find anywhere else in LA. Yes it is touristy, over the top, and at times grimy, but visiting is like stepping into another world.

I think it is fair to say we love Venice Beach. And we hope you do too. That is why we have put this little guide together on all the best things to do in Venice Beach. From attractions, tours, and food, we tell you everything you need to know about visiting.

Venice Beach California – Some Background

1 day at venice beach is it enough, how to get to venice beach, best time to visit venice beach, 1. walk the venice beach boardwalk, 2. checkout some of the shops along the boardwalk, 3. visit the farmers market, 4. do a bike ride to santa monica, 5. rollerblading, 6. explore the canals, 7. find the iconic venice sign, 8. tour the mosaic tile house, 9. enjoy some time on the venice pier, 10. head to muscle beach, 11. watch the skateboarders (or you know join them), 12. marina del ray, 13. abbot kinney boulevard, 14. chill on the beach (picnics encouraged), 15. find the different filming locations, 16. do a surf lesson, 17. get a bird’s eye view in a helicopter, 18. enjoy the sunset, 19. checkout the street art, eating and drinking in venice beach, sample venice beach day trip itinerary, longer than 1 day in venice beach where to stay, tips for visiting venice beach, romantic things to do in venice beach, final thoughts on things to do in venice beach.

Before we get to all the super exciting things to do in Venice Beach here is a bit of background. Venice is an LA neighbourhood located (you guessed it) on the beach in the western part of LA. It was actually built in 1905 as a beach resort that essentially took its inspiration from its namesake, Venice in Italy. The idea was to create this area with canals, piazzas and pedestrian bridges that essentially mirrored those in Italy. Venice Beach covers 75 miles of coastline and surfing here is supposed to be one of the best spots in the world.

The design was the brainchild of an eccentric tobacco millionaire called Abbot Kinney. And it only merged with LA in 1926, so before that it was considered independent. In order to bring his dream to life, he dig several miles of canals, drained marshes, and also built a pier in order to promote business growth in the area. Unfortunately financial troubles struck and this is when it merged with Los Angeles.

Since then the area has gone through different phases. In the 1950s it was referred to as the Slum by the Sea due to the neglect it had suffered. There is still a grimey element to Venice Beach these days but it has definitely changed from neglected and run down.

These days Venice is one of the top tourist attractions in LA, made famous due to its eccentric bohemian vibes, and because it has featured as the backdrop in a number of films. It was also where the Doors formed which for us was one of our favourite facts about Venice Beach.

You might be wondering if 1 day in Venice beach is enough? Well yes and no. We visited as part of a larger West Coast USA trip so we really did only have limited time here. 1 day in Venice Beach will allow you to see all the sights, do some shopping, and take it all in. We do recommend staying overnight in the area though, because it is a great place to have a few drinks, watch the sunset, and enjoy a beachside meal. Overall you shouldn’t need more than 2 days in Venice Beach though unless you are staying in the area and want to explore Santa Monica and beyond.

Whether you are visiting LA for a weekend or as part of a longer USA trip , chances are you will be arriving into LAX. If this is the case we highly recommend getting an Uber or Lyft from the airport. Public transport in this part of LA can be a slight pain. For example if you are staying in the Downtown LA area you are looking at about 1.5 hours travel time and several bus/metro changes.

Traffic is also a bit of a nightmare in LA, which is why with a Lyft or Uber you can get someone else to do the driving. In peak season parking is quite scarce so you should try and prebook a space to avoid the hassle of driving around aimlessly. In terms of parking you can find some free parking (always check the signs though), or cheap metered parking close to the beach. This does tend to fill up quickly. There are a number of parking lots but expect to pay between $5 and $15 for the day, depending on the time of year you visit.

LA is one of those places that has pretty decent weather year round. Although I say this as someone who lives in the UK, I’m sure if you ask someone in LA they would be appalled at calling a 20 degree Celsius day good. Obviously Venice Beach get really busy in the summer months (June- August), especially at a weekend, you will struggle to get parking. But it does mean there is a lot going on, and it’s great for people watching.

September – November are decent months to visit because there are less tourists, and the weather is still pretty warm. It is easier to get parked up, and there is still a lot going on on the beach.

Either way whenever you do visit, we guarantee that you will love it.

Things to do in Venice Beach

Here are some of the best things to do a Venice Beach, that you certainly won’t want to miss on your trip there.

One of the top things to do at Venice Beach is to walk the boardwalk. It’s a hive of activity, and you might see people juggling fire, or playing instruments. This is where the street performers flock to, or you might get lucky like we did and see someone offering hugs for $1. Either way it’s basically where all the action happens, and we cannot even begin to explain the madness that is the Venice Beach Boardwalk. It’s just something you have to experience for yourself.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Whilst you are completing your walk along the Venice Beach Boardwalk why not pop into one of the ummm shall we say ‘interesting’ stores in the vicinity. You will find a whole heap of shops offering everything from medicinal marijuana, to t-shirts with obscene slogans. Also if you have forgotten your beach necessities you can purchase flip flops or a bikini here too.

If you happen to be out and about in Venice Beach on a Friday morning then we highly recommend you visit the Venice Farmers Market. Open between 7 – 11 am every Friday, this is the perfect place to pick up some fresh produce.

Another of the best things to do in Venice Beach has to be a bike ride. You can weave in and out of people, as you enjoy the sea air on your face. We recommend booking a guided tour , that will take you between Santa Monica and Venice, and will also give you ample time to explore the canals and muscle beach. You also have the option of a 3 hour electric bike tour , which is another great choice.

Right I will admit that most of my knowledge of LA before we visited was based on TV shows. So I sort of had this idea in my head that one of the coolest things to do in Venice Beach would be to rollerblade along with a jumper tied around my waist as I weaved in and out of the crowds. Yes I watched a lot of Baywatch growing up! Whilst it might not be exactly like that in real life (and yes the 80’s and 90’s are long gone), I still think that the idea of rollerblading around Venice Beach is awesome, and I highly recommend it.

As we mentioned above Venice Beach was indeed inspired by Venice in Italy. So it is a no brainer that there are canals here. Apparently you used to be able to ride a gondola up and down them but these days you will have to make do with walking instead. Still, it’s a really beautiful area, and worth a stroll gondolas or not!

To find the canals you do need to step away from the beach and head towards the Venice Historic Canal District. The canals give you a glimpse into the old Venice, the one that was built as a beachside resort town back in 1905. There were a lot more canals at this time, and in the 1920’s due to the popularity of cars (who knew?!) some of these were filled in to create more roads.

What we love the most about walking around is looking at all the beautiful houses. I can’t even begin to imagine how much they cost, but let’s just say we won’t be buying one anytime soon. We’ve also heard that the houses get properly decked out with Christmas lights in December, so add that to your list of things to do in Venice Beach if you are visiting over the festive season.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

If you take a walk down Windward Avenue, at Pacific Avenue you will stumble upon one of the most Instagrammable spots in Venice, the Venice sign. What we would say is don’t be ignorant and always watch out for traffic when taking photos here. It’s at a super busy intersection so do be mindful.

The sign is a replica of the original put in place by Abbot Kinney, so it’s really got those old school Venice Beach vibes. The best time to get a picture is around sunset so keep that in mind.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Venice is quirky. And one of the quirkiest things to do in Venice Beach has to be to visit the Mosaic Tile House. Now this one is a bit of a hidden gem, so much so that we didn’t actually know about it when we visited. But hence why we have added it to our list of things to do in Venice Beach so that you don’t miss out!

It’s basically a home covered in mosaic tiles, both inside and out. Cheri Pann and Gonzalo Duran are the couple behind the masterpiece and they are constantly updating and adding to the artwork.

If you are planning to visit, the house is only open on Saturdays, between 1 – 4pm. And you should make a reservation in advance by emailing   [email protected] . It’s about $20 for the tour, but it is worth it (we’ve been told anyway) as the sheer creativity is incredible.

Whilst Venice Pier might not be as famous as say its neighbour Santa Monica, it’s still one of the fun things to do in Venice Beach. You might see a lot of people fishing along here, and if you really want to you can join them. The pier is open to the public and you don’t need a fishing permit to fish here either. Also a top tip, if you are looking for somewhere to watch the sunset the pier is a good shout.

I don’t know what I was expecting when visiting Muscle Beach but as it transpires it is literally just an outdoor gym. It was made famous by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger who would train here during his bodybuilding days.

You see people of all body types working out here, not just your incredible hulk types, and it still hosts bodybuilding competitions from time to time. Definitely something cool to add to your list of things to do in Venice Beach.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

This is probably one of the most iconic skateboarding locations in California, which in itself is reason enough to check it out. The skate park was built in 2009, and since then has been frequented by skateboarders and also a certain Mr Tony Hawks from time to time.

Even if you can’t skateboard, or don’t know much about it, it’s pretty mesmerising watching these skateboarders some of whom are really good navigate their way through the maze of dips. Obviously you can tell that I know nothing about skateboarding, despite playing Tony Hawks Pro Skater, but I sure did have a lot of fun watching.

I know this article is specifically about things to do in Venice Beach, but we do recommend visiting Marina Del Ray whilst you are in the area. It is only a 5 minute drive from Venice Beach, and it really is beautiful. It is a a man made harbour home to about 5000 boats, and it offers some truly spectacular waterside dining. You can even do a champagne brunch cruise from here.

There are also a number of water activities you can do, like paddle boarding and kayaking. In fact one of the best tours we have found will let you partake in these activities, whilst showing you hidden spots and an opportunity to discover some wildlife.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard is one of the trendiest streets in Venice California, known for its boutique shops, art galleries, and really cool eateries. I won’t lie, it’s not cheap but well worth a visit and a bit of a wander through. Abbot Kinney Boulevard covers about a mile between Washington Boulevard to Main Street.

There is some cook street art along here, as well as food trucks and other treasures. This is a must to add to your things to do in Venice Beach especially because it often gets the nickname – the coolest block in the USA.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

Let’s face it the main draw to Venice Beach is of course the actual beach. The golden sand and roaring blue ocean makes it the perfect place to sit and just chill. People watching is also highly encouraged. We are big fans of people watching and honestly Venice Beach is the best place in the world to do this. It’s just so quirky and there is so much going on.

If you do get the chance to walk along the sand try to find the Venice Pride Lifeguard tower. It was painted in 2017 by Patrick Marston for Venice Pride, and has now become a permanent installation on the beach.

Also, if chilling isn’t your thing and you would rather be doing something why not take a walk along the beach to Santa Monica. It’s about 3 miles and a really beautiful walk.

If you fancy yourself a bit of a TV and movie buff then one of the best things to do in Venice Beach is to checkout some of the more famous filming locations. Some of the obvious ones are Baywatch (the TV show), White Men Can’t Jump, and I Love You, Man. Also the new Barbie movie has quite a few scenes filmed here.

If you are an adventure seeker one of the best things to do in Venice Beach is of course a surf lesson. It kind of feels like a really Californian experience, and why not do it on one of the world’s most famous beaches. There are a range of options including a 2 hour lesson which includes a board and wetsuit. All you need to bring is yourself! Also, the weather in California is always (well almost always) beautiful so no excuses.

Ok this one is probably a mere dream for some, but if you have some extra cash, and you are wanting to see Venice from a different view then a helicopter ride is a must. Obviously it won’t be top of everyone’s list of things to do in Venice Beach, but you can’t tell me that it’s not exciting. You can book helicopter tours of the California Coast online , there are some restrictions but all the information can be found in the link provided.

Now this is my absolute favourite thing to do in Venice Beach, and the good news is, it is completely free. Venice Beach does get some pretty epic sunsets I have to say. A few years ago I was travelling on my own and was able to sit on the sand with the orange sky inflamed whilst the graffiti clad buildings act as the perfect foreground.

Street art is a huge part of Venice Beach and for me this is one of my favourite bits of Venice. It really adds to the quirky, arty character of the place. Our favourite bit of street is located on the beach between the basketball courts and the skatepark. It’s certainly a very Instagrammable place!

tourist attractions in venice beach california

If you are looking for things to do in Venice Beach then obviously food and drink needs to be added to this list. There are so many choices and a number of quaint, hip places to sit down and eat or drink. On top of this you also have your street food on the boardwalk such as pizza and tacos (Tito’s Tacos is somewhat an institution here) to name but a few.

tourist attractions in venice beach california

If you are a doors fan one place that we recommend is Hinano Cafe . Open since 1962 this is a great place to go for a beer and a burger and was said to be Jim Morrison’s favourite spot in Venice Beach.

Hotel Erwin is also a good shout, as it has a pretty awesome rooftop bar. What could be better than sipping cocktails at sunset?

If you want to blend in with the locals head to James’ Beach . It opened in 1996 and since then has been feeding people some really good US comfort food – done their way of course. It was also featured in the film ‘I love you man’ as having the world’s best fish tacos.

If you are spending a day in Venice Beach here is a sample itinerary.

Spend the morning exploring the Beach, and visit Muscle Beach , the skate park , and Venice Pier . Keep an eye out for the several photo opportunities and street art . Afterwards get a photo with the Venice sign , and talk a walk by the canals . Head to Abbot Kinney Boulevard for some lunch.

In the afternoon do a surf lesson , or a bike ride to Santa Monica , and spend the evening sipping cocktails at Hotel Erwin . Make sure you catch the sunset from here too.

If you are wanting to spend longer than 1 day in Venice Beach then you might be wondering where to stay. Here are some of our top recommendations.

Hotel Erwin

Hotel Erwin is probably one of our top suggestions, but that might be because of the awesome rooftop bar. Rooms are clean and modern, and some of them will provide you with some pretty amazing views of the beach.

Inn at Venice Beach

If you are looking for accommodation that is slightly easier on the wallet head to the Inn at Venice Beach . The location is superb which means you can get some great photos of Venice Beach before the crowds arrive.

Venice V Hotel

Movie lovers will be thrilled to stay at Venice V Hotel . It’s located in a historic building that was originally called The Waldorf, and was once home to A- Listers like Charlie Chaplin who lived here.

Here are some of our top tips for visiting Venice Beach.

  • We do highly recommend staying the night as it can be difficult to get here especially using public transport.
  • Worst case though if you can’t stay the night, definitely set aside a whole day to visit.
  • Bring comfortable shoes, flip flops, and beach attire.
  • But also bring a jacket, as the weather can change and it can be cool and windy in the evenings.

Whilst Venice Beach might not be the most typically romantic place in the world, that doesn’t mean you can’t find some. If you are visiting with your significant other here are some of the most romantic things to do in Venice Beach.

Marina Del Ray Evening Cruise

Why not take a trip to Marina Del Ray, which is only a 5 minute drive from Venice Beach. Here you can get yourself booked onto a Luxury Boat Cruise with cheese and wine. It’s especially glorious at sunset. You do need to book online in advance , but it is definitely one of the more romantic things to do in Venice Beach.

We hope that you take this article as a sign to visit Venice Beach. There is so much to see and do and at least 1 day in Venice Beach is a must for any trip to LA. It has such a different vibe to the rest of LA and it’s one of the places that actually made LA worth visiting for us .

We loved every minute of this quirky place and so if you are looking for something a little different to break up your trip head to Venice Beach now!

10 Best Things to Do in Venice, California

Izzet Keribar / Getty Images

An icon of Los Angeles, Venice is located between Santa Monica and Marina del Ray. The neighborhood is named after the famous Italian city because of its canals , which were originally built in 1905 by the developer Abbot Kinney. However today it is mostly known for its countercultural spirit and creativity. From Arnold Schwarzenegger's muscles to the sport of skateboarding, many of California's cultural exports can trace their roots back to Venice.

Venice is known as a haven for creative types and is famous for its bohemian boardwalk, diverse culture, and eclectic shops and restaurants along Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Although it is much safer than it used to be, you should still take general safety precautions to avoid falling victim to petty theft. You will find plenty of things to do year-round, especially along Venice Beach , but there are some places you shouldn't miss.

Marvel at Mosaics

The Mosaic Tile House is one of Los Angeles' best-kept secrets. This stunning live-in art project is the private home of artists Cheri Pann and Gonzalo Duran, however, it is open to the public every Saturday between 12 and 3 p.m. You will have to reserve your visit by e-mail first.

The home is completely covered in colorful tiles and mosaics, inside and out. A project that has lasted over 25 years, this couple has used everyday objects like mugs, bottles, and spoons to fill every last inch of their home with something interesting to look at.

Drop-In at the Venice Skate Park

Built in 2009, the Venice Beach Skate Park symbolizes the important role of this iconic location in the history of skateboarding culture. The beach has always been a magnet for skateboarders who have been rolling around Venice since the 1970s. The 16,000-square-foot park is always full of bold and creative skaters showing off their tricks. Skating here is on the bucket list of many thrashers, but even if you've never skated in your life, it's worth a visit to watch.

Get Up Close to Sea Life

Instead of an official brick-and-mortar location, this "museum without walls" educates visitors from the actual beach. Through a series of programs that incorporate art, literature, and music with science, children are welcome to learn more about the ocean through marine science pop-up labs on the Venice Pier and at the local tide pool. Despite the hubbub of activity, the beach is still a living ecosystem and tide pools are teeming with sea life.

The roster of programming includes everything from specimen displays, beachcombing walks, Moby Dick readings, and the ever-popular Grunion Run Party. During this event, families are invited out at night to observe schools of grunion fish slither out of the ocean and onto the sand to do their breeding.

Walk Along the Venice Canals

Altug Karakoc / Getty Images

When Abbot Kinney created his Venice of America development in 1905, he had 16 miles of canals dug to drain the marshland for residential construction. The majority of the canals were paved over in the 1920s to create roads for the new horseless carriages, but a few blocks of canals remain south of Venice Boulevard about a block and a half inland from the beach.

Although many of the homes around the canals were getting run down, they've mostly been restored, creating a cute area to walk or paddle around. The canals do get a bit dry in summer, so you may not be able to take a boat down them then. However, you can walk along the concrete edges of these old waterways at any time of year.

Stroll Down the Venice Beach Boardwalk

The Venice Beach Boardwalk, also known as Ocean Front Walk, is one of the most popular attractions in Los Angeles, welcoming over millions of visitors every year. Strolling along this famous three-mile stretch of pavement and taking in its many activities and attractions is also one of the top free things to do in the city.

More than a mile of it is lined with funky shops, cafes, and vendor booths, as well as dazzling street performers and artists. And you can either workout or just people-watch at the beachside outdoor gym, Muscle Beach where Arnold Schwarzenegger was discovered. It also includes handball courts, a gymnastics playground, beach volleyball courts, and a paved skateboard park.

Relax on the Beach

The boardwalk isn't the only reason people go to the shoreline in Venice; they also go to dip their toes in the Pacific Ocean. Venice Beach is the busiest facility operated by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, welcoming over 10 million visitors a year, on average.

Sunbathe to the sound of a drum circle or watch a street performer while you relax and soak up some rays on this two-mile stretch of Southern California paradise. The beach is free to enjoy, but parking around this popular tourist spot is not easy, especially on weekends.

Ride the Venice Beach Bike Path

If you're feeling adventurous, rent a bicycle or skates from the Venice Boardwalk Bike Rental services and take a ride down the bike path between the boardwalk and the beach. The Venice Beach Bike Path is popular for cyclists and skaters alike, as it has over nine miles of paved road dedicated to people on wheels. From Venice, you can continue up the coast through Santa Monica to the northern shores of Los Angeles, or you can travel all the way to Redondo Beach in the south by taking a detour around Marina del Rey .

Enjoy Local Art

TripSavvy / Kayte Deioma

Venice's diverse and eclectic population is home to many artists and creators, which has given rise to art galleries and public art pieces in the district. One of the most famous, the Venice Public Arts Walls, is located on the Venice Pavilion building. Sporting graffiti art from the 1960s to the early 2000s, this public art space, which has been dubbed "the graffiti pit," is a great place to see a visual representation of the artistic history of Venice.

Shop and Dine on Abbott Kinney Boulevard

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Stretching from Venice Boulevard in the northwest to Pacific Avenue in the southeast, Abbot Kinney Boulevard has an eclectic mix of independent boutiques, restaurants, and nightspots perfect for a night out on the town after a day of lounging on the beach. Additionally, each year the entire street is closed off for a weekend in September for the Abbott Kinney Festival .

This short stretch of shopping is one of Los Angeles' trendiest spots for less-traditional clothes and gifts , featuring both local brands like All Things Fabulous plus international staples. Although Abbott Kinney gets the most attention, the downtown area of Venice continues on Grand Boulevard and Main Street, where you'll find even more shops and trendy restaurants.

Snap a Picture of the Binoculars Building

Kayte Deioma

The Binoculars Building on Main Street was designed by architect Frank Gehry and constructed between 1985 and 1991 for ad agency Chiat/Day. The building gets its name from the accompanying sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen on its street-facing facade, and this architectural landmark now houses some of Google's offices. Since it's a private office space, you can't explore inside this peculiar building, but it makes a great photo-op if you're walking around Venice.

9 Exciting Things To Do In Venice Beach, California

tourist attractions in venice beach california

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • Los Angeles
  • United States

It’s the picture many people have of Southern California: oiled-up muscle men flex on the sand while bikini-clad roller skaters zip by licking an ice cream cone. Almost anywhere in Los Angeles, locals will laugh at that image — except in Venice Beach. This slice of sun and beaches is where that LA stereotype got its start. Come for the people watching but stay to see a much richer piece of Southern California culture.

Venice Beach Boardwalk and mural

1. Boardwalk

Start your visit with the iconic boardwalk that runs the length of Venice Beach. Extending from Santa Monica in the north all the way down to Marina Del Rey in the south, this mostly concrete path (you won’t see many boards along the way) takes you 2 miles through all the best Venice Beach has to offer. As you stroll, be on the lookout for skaters who have used this path as a cruising zone for decades. The walk is lined with funky shops selling everything you need for a day at the beach, from swimwear to surfboards. There are street vendors galore and countless places to get a tasty bite or a cool drink. Nearly every attraction in Venice Beach is steps away from the boardwalk, so it’s easy to make it the hub of your visit.

Pro Tip: Parking in Venice Beach can be tough. There’s a large public parking lot at the end of Venice Boulevard as it approaches the beach and another at the end of Rose Avenue. Car break-ins can happen here, so be sure to not leave valuables behind if you can and lock everything out of sight.

Muscle Beach gym in Venice Beach

2. Muscle Beach

Arnold Schwarzenegger once called this collection of weightlifting equipment on the beach home. Now dozens of would-be Arnolds line up to take turns on the equipment and show off their sculpted physiques for the crowds who gather to watch. With a history that goes back to the 1950s , this iteration of Muscle Beach has been an important spot for bodybuilders and anyone who wants to watch them bulk up.

Located just north of the public parking at Venice Boulevard, the gym is set just off the boardwalk amidst tennis courts, sand volleyball courts and basketball courts, meaning you’ll be surrounded by athletic prowess wherever you turn. If you want to take your turn training where Arnold trained, you do have to pay to enter the gym facility. The city of Los Angeles maintains the site and visitors can buy single-day passes starting at $5 for seniors and $10 for everyone else.

Pro Tip: Look nearby for the giant portrait of young Arnold Schwarzenegger painted on the side of the building at the corner of Speedway Avenue and 18th Place. It’s just a block east of the Muscle Beach gym equipment.

Venice skatepark bowls

3. Venice Skatepark

It’s hard to miss the massive, multi-million-dollar skatepark that lies between the beachfront park at East Market Street and the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. It was those waves — or a lack of them — that pushed surfers to climb on boards with wheels on the days the ocean wasn’t wild enough for them to use their surfboards. Venice Beach and nearby Santa Monica became the birthplace of skater culture, influencing what boards skaters around the world would use, what clothes they would wear, and what shoes they’d put on the boards.

The current skatepark is a relatively new feature in Venice Beach. Opened in 2009, this $3.4 million structure includes the ramps, bowls, and slides one would expect in any city skatepark. But its claim to fame are the two large depressions that resemble empty swimming pools — just like the empty pools of Southern California that served as home for generations of skaters.

Pro Tip: If you don’t plan to skate yourself, there’s plenty of room along the railing on the east side of the park for you to watch the action and snap a few action photos.

4. High Rooftop Lounge

Despite its oceanfront location, Venice Beach has only one rooftop bar to give patrons a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. Perched atop the Hotel Erwin , which faces Pacific Avenue, the High Rooftop Lounge runs the block-long length of the building, sitting about six stories above the beach. The food and drink runs a little on the pricey side, as you’re paying for the view rather than the food.

Pro Tip: The bar is understandably popular, with the biggest crowds gathering at sunset to watch the Sun sink beyond the Pacific waves. Be prepared to make reservations for the busiest times and pay a reservation fee for prime seating on the beach side of the deck.

Sunset over the Venice Fishing Pier

5. Venice Fishing Pier

Running perpendicular to the Venice Beach Boardwalk at Washington Street, you’ll find the path to the Venice Fishing Pier . This concrete structure juts a quarter of a mile out into the Pacific Ocean, reaching some deeper water that’s a favorite for sport fishermen. Unlike the nearby Santa Monica Pier (which you can easily see from the Venice Fishing Pier), there are no attractions on this pier.

Its current design, dating back to 1965 with a major overhaul after storm damage in 1983, is aimed at allowing fishing from its railings. But even if you don’t consider yourself an angler, the walk to the end will take less than 5 minutes and open the way to an expansive view up and down the California Coast. You’ll easily see Santa Monica to the north and Marina Del Rey to the southeast. On clear days, Malibu will be visible in the distance to the north and west, while Rancho Palos Verdes and even Catalina Island show themselves to the south.

Pro Tip: There are no facilities on the pier whatsoever, meaning any comfort breaks should be taken before venturing out to the end.

Ballona Creek Bike Path in Marina Del Rey

6. Bike Ride

Walking miles in the Southern California sun can be more than some want to experience. If you want to cover a lot of Venice Beach in a short amount of time, an organized bike tour might be the thing for you. A number of companies operate bike tours of the area with knowledgeable guides who can show you the highlights of Venice Beach, Santa Monica, and Marina Del Rey.

Among the best is the Venice Vibrations Bike Tour from Venice Bike Tours. The 3-hour tour will get you to all the major spots in Venice Beach, riding in style on a beach cruiser that can handle streets, sidewalks, and sand. The Santa Monica & Venice Beach Bike Adventure runs 2–3 hours and takes you to Venice Beach and Santa Monica, covering the major attractions in each locale. If you want to go it on your own and skip the tour guide, multiple bike shops along the boardwalk rent bikes by the hour or the day. A popular spot is Jay’s Rentals , which can get you a bike for around $8 per hour or $28 for the entire day.

Pro Tip: If you’re not a regular bike rider, a few hours pedaling under the Sun might seem more than you can take. If that’s the case, consider an e-bike rental. E-bikes do some of the pedaling for you, making a multi-mile trip as easy as a trip to the corner and back. Boneshaker Electric Bikes in the center of the boardwalk is a popular spot. But be prepared to pay a lot more to rent an electric bike than you’ll pay for the old-fashioned kind.

Venice Beach street mural

7. Street Art

Though you’ll see some of it from the boardwalk, be sure to stroll away from the beach and into the city to see the street art adorning the buildings of Venice Beach. There are a number of self-guided walking tours to see the best of the art , usually only stretching a mile or two. Among the best works of art to see is the famous Touch of Venice mural just down the street from the lighted Venice sign at Windward and Pacific Avenue. Also notable is the salute to the Dogtown skater days on a building on Aragon Court just off Abbott Kinney Boulevard.

Pro Tip: Think about the time of day you’ll see the murals and whether they’ll get full sunshine to bring out their colors.

Venice Beach canals

8. Venice Canals Walkway

As you work your way off the beach and into the center of the city, don’t miss the feature that gives Venice its name. Just east of the beach area, you’ll find the canals of Venice, a 10-square-block area of houses lined up on shallow waterways that connect to the sea through Marina Del Rey.

The canals are what’s left of a much larger system dug in 1905 to attract people to what was then a separate city from Los Angeles. Originally featuring arched bridges as found in Venice, Italy — and even gondoliers plying the waters — developers and the city eventually filled in many of the canals to add buildings and roads. The Venice Canals Association maintains a calendar of events on the canals each month, but feel free to wander the paths and bridges anytime to explore this beautiful neighborhood on your own.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard

9. Abbot Kinney Boulevard

Travel a bit further from the beach and you’ll find one of the west side’s most interesting and eclectic shopping and dining areas — Abbot Kinney . Running along the boulevard that bears the same name, the neighborhood has dozens of small, quirky shops interspersed with bigger retail names. Stop along the way at cafés and hole-in-the-wall restaurants to find any type of cuisine that interests you. If you stop by on the first Friday of the month, you can sample the fare at one of LA’s biggest food truck gatherings . More than two dozen trucks park along the boulevard from 5–9:30 p.m.

The First Timer’s Weekend Guide to Venice Beach, California

Ready for an awesome weekend getaway? I know I am…so strap on your seatbelts, we’re headed to Venice Beach, California! Just outside of Los Angeles, Venice is the city’s grungy, eclectic younger cousin. The area has an iconic, funky vibe, attracting everyone from surfers to artists to families soaking in the California sun.

Spend some time in Venice Beach and neighboring city Santa Monica, and you may never want to go home. Before you go off and book your ticket, here are some of my favorite Venice Beach attractions.

Map of Venice Beach Activities

Here is your quick reference list of the best things to do in Venice Beach, California for first-time visitors. I’ve included an interactive map, and you can find all of the additional details in the post!

1 | Venice Beach Boardwalk

The boardwalk is so over the top, I found the best way to approach this is with a game I call Boardwalk Bingo. Check off the following items to get Bingo, and reward yourself with one of the many food trucks (or drinks, if that floats your boat more than a fresh taco).

  • Incredibly buff person leading a sweaty workout in full display?
  • Marijuana doctor offering checkups to anyone with $40?
  • Tacky souvenir shopped stuffed with ridiculous booty shorts and tanks?
  • Man showing off an epic tattoo collection and impressively long beard?
  • Street artist showcasing a surprisingly awesome talent? (I loved the sand art!)
  • Fortune teller promising some poor guy riches in the near future?

In short, this promenade is more of a circus than a boardwalk, and one of the most thoroughly entertaining places I’ve ever experienced. My biggest issue was trying to not stare too much. In any case, this was definitely one of the top Venice Beach attractions.

2 | Venice Beach

Whether you want to surf, throw a Frisbee, or snooze in the sun, Venice Beach beckons young and old alike with its eternal sunshine and sparkling blue water. If you’re up for it, try the Segway tour around Santa Monica and Venice Beach. You get to see a little bit of everything, from Muscle Beach to the Pier.

3 | Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier is the perfect place to cap off your day. Hop on the Ferris wheel for views over the Pacific, take your chance with Wac-a-Mole, or enjoy a (free) summer evening concert. This is super touristy, but I was a tourist, so seize the day and own up to your touristy status! A fun way to explore the Santa Monica area down to Venice Beach is via electric bike . Check out the beaches, under the pier, and even the canals.

4 | Skate Park

For me, the skate park was one of the coolest things I experienced when I was in Venice. Skaters ranging from pre-teens all the way up to grandpa status gathered at the park along the Boardwalk to show off their skills. It had such a cool community feel, and it was great to just chill and take in the local life.

5 | Abbot Kinney

Labelled “the coolest block in America,” Venice’s bustling shopping district offers an eclectic set of shops, ranging from traditionally recognized stores to hip, local boutiques. First Friday features live music, drinks, local promotions, and one of the most vibrant street parties in LA. Honestly, this street felt way to cool for me…

Yes, this is exactly how it sounds…transport yourself to Venice, Italy from the middle of southern California. They were created in the early 1900s by a millionaire so that he could bring a taste of Venice to the USA.

Where to Stay in Venice Beach

Budget Stay:   I personally opted to stay at an VRBO vacation rental . The house was a shared space, and right of the Venice Boardwalk…awesome location and the host was super friendly!

Mid-Range Stay:  A top recommendation for a reasonably priced stay in Venice is Venice Breeze Suites . The hotel is nothing special, but the location is AMAZING. It’s right on the beach and boardwalk, so you’re right in the middle of the action. It’s very clean boutique style hotel, and one of the best values in the area!

Luxury Stay:  You can’t go wrong with the Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Ray . It’s only a couple miles from Venice beach and 5 miles from Los Angeles Airport. Plus, private balconies and a eucalyptus steam room…I won’t say no to that!

About Venice Beach

Venice Beach is the busiest facility operated by the Department of Recreation and Parks. This iconic site attracts visitors from all over the world and it is estimated that approximately 28,000 to 30,000 people visit the Venice Beach Boardwalk and adjacent Recreation and Parks property on a daily basis. The Boardwalk, also known as Ocean Front Walk, is the second most-visited destination in Southern California, with an average of over ten (10) million visitors per year.  It is known as one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions.

The Venice Beach Boardwalk stretches over two (2) miles and hosts hundreds of street vendors and performers along with numerous privately owned restaurants and food venues. The Venice Beach Recreation Center offers various activities including but not limited to basketball, paddle tennis and handball tournaments, body building at the world famous Muscle Beach Venice gym, and other special events.

Venice Beach also offers a fishing pier, a world renowned skate plaza, bike path, two (2) children's play areas and provides a variety of services for the culturally diverse population that visits throughout the year. Film productions are also very popular at Venice Beach and occur year round. All of the sports courts, skate plaza, pier and other amenities are open to the general public on a daily basis.

Birth of "Venice of America" (1890-1906)

In the 1890’s, one man’s dream of a renaissance resort and amusement park transformed a deteriorating marshland west of Los Angeles, California, into the "Coney Island of the Pacific". Despite disbelief and opposition, the dreams of Abbot Kinney materialized in grand style.

  • 1891 - Kinney and Ryan purchase land and sell lots at Ocean Park.
  • 1905 - Kinney constructs Venice of America, canals and piers.
  • 1911 - Fraser builds "Million Dollar" amusement pier in Ocean Park.
  • 1920 - Abbot Kinney dies; Abbot Kinney amusement pier burns.
  • 1924 - Ocean Park pier complex burns.
  • 1925 - Los Angeles annexes Venice.
  • 1930 - Oil discovered in Venice.
  • 1946 - Venice amusement Pier closed.
  • 1958 - Pacific Ocean Park opens after old Ocean Park remodled.
  • 1964 - Los Angeles tears down 550 buildings in historic Venice.
  • 1967 - Pacific Ocean Park goes bankrupt.
  • 1977 - Venice regains popularity as "Roller Skating Capital of the World."

This Iconic Southern California Beach Was Just Named the Best in the U.S.

Venice Beach has long been a popular beach destination.

benedek/Getty Images

The arrival of spring marks the unofficial commencement of beach season in the U.S., a country blessed with more than 95,000 miles of glistening shoreline. With seemingly endless options, stretching from the Pacific to the Caribbean coasts, selecting the ideal stateside spring beach escape can be a challenge even for the most seasoned sun-seekers.

According to the latest rankings from the travel guide and review site Dive In Travel, Venice Beach, California, is the top U.S. beach to visit this spring. A hotspot for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing, it's not just the water that draws the crowds. Venice Beach’s Ocean Front Walk is the second most-visited destination in Southern California , prime for people-watching, colorful public murals, and seaside restaurants like The Waterfront Venice .

Take a day trip from Los Angeles or stay the night at one of several boutique hotels like Venice V Hotel , which offers cozy suites and penthouse bungalows overlooking the beach. Keep an eye out for the legendary bodybuilders, skateboarders, and street performers that make this beach truly one of a kind.

Second on the list is Oregon’s Cannon Beach, a mystical landscape “where nature takes center stage,” says Dive In Travel. Just 90 minutes from Portland, this stunning four-mile beach is graced by stone “needles,” tranquil tidepools, and the iconic Haystack Rock. This dominant landmark, perched just off the shore, is not only an impressive sight to behold but also an Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge that transforms into a nesting sanctuary for tufted puffins during spring and summer.

Rounding out the top five are Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina, the standup paddleboard capital of the U.S.; Driftwood Beach in Georgia, famous for its massive weathered trees that have washed ashore; and South Beach in Miami, which epitomizes urban beach glamor. South Beach boasts nearly 300 hotels — the highest on the list — including magnificent Art Deco properties like The Setai , Thompson Miami Beach , and Nobu Hotel Miami Beach .

For this report, Dive In Travel compiled a list of the top 24 beach destinations in the U.S. based on Google search volume, performance across Tripadvisor reviews, hotel prices and availability, parking availability, and average drink and dining costs. To learn more about the methodology and see the complete list of the rankings, visit divein.com .
