There are three websites we highly recommend for getting your sightseeing tickets and tours.

Get Your Guide and Tiqets.com are ticket suppliers. Here you will find all your tickets for the Colosseum in Rome, Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Eiffel Tower in Paris and so on.

Compare both websites. Prices can differ, it depends on the sight really. Here is my review about Get Your Guide .

The Best Tours in Europe

Walks of Italy or Take Walks (it is the same company!) is a small walking tour company offering high-quality walking tours with exceptional guides.

I know, this sounds a bit over the top, maybe?! Yet it is true. We joined their tours in Florence, Venice, Rome, and Athens so far. All their groups are small and they even run some exclusive VIP tours. No kidding! You can enter the Sistine Chapel after hours or get some skip-the-line-tickets for special sights like the Colosseum in Rome.

2. Car Rental in Europe

Planning to rent a car in Europe? There are so many options and websites out there. We always start our research at Discover Cars.

It compares all car rental companies and even offers car insurance. This saves you a lot of money as it is much cheaper with them. Read our complete guide and review on Discover Car Hire .

Planning your route : Viamichelin.com

The absolute best website to plan your route and the costs of that trip. It is a very easy website to use. Just add your origin and destination. Via Michelin runs a few routes and gives you the best options.

My favorite part is the calculation of costs, including gas and tolls. Especially in countries like France and Italy, the tolls can up a lot. In countries like Spain, it is often not necessary to take the toll-road, since there is a national street nearby.

3. Travel Insurance

Do you need travel insurance? In case your own health insurance does not cover travel, we really recommend getting one. Please check if you already have your own insurance, though. No need to have 2-3-4 different ones.

Also, very important: make sure your travel insurance covers:

• activities you plan to do
• covers other basics you require

These are my best websites for accommodation in Europe. As a very first step, we recommend checking our Europe itineraries.

Booking.com usually lists every single type of accommodation from the North to the South. Not sure how booking.com work? Read this review of Booking.com

Vrbo is another home-sharing and rental platform. It is a big competitor of Airbnb, yet not as known.

Here you can find our review of Vrbo .

The prices are competitive, and it has a stronger focus on more unique accommodation near beaches and such. For Europe, Vrbo is a good alternative. Sign up, it is free.

Airbnb (yes, but…!)

On the other hand, Airbnb is obviously famous for its apartments. However, I urge you to check for apartments in Europe with a proper tourist license . There have been cases you people have thrown out of the apartment by police as the host had no actual tourism license.

Furthermore, in many touristic places, Airbnb is not very popular among locals. Personally, we stopped using Airbnb due to the abuse of local markets. It just does not sit right with us (anymore!)

Guide to Alternatives to Airbnb

We wrote up a big, detailed guide on Airbnb competitors and alternative websites you can use. There is many interesting websites you may have never heard of. The range goes from high-end luxury to free stays and camping.

For traveling on a smaller budget, I use Hostelworld .

Here you can find all the hostels in Europe. Some hostels are really low-quality, while others can be surprisingly cool. For backpackers and solo-travelers, Hostelworld is a cool app and website to use.

Last but not the least comes in Hostelz.com .

This website is actually a budget traveler’s best friend. It lists every single hostel in the world, and it compares its prices through Booking.com and Hostelworld.com

You can end up saving 25% less on your accommodation in Europe. Imagine that. Therefore, add Hostelz.com to your favorite travel sites. It is an easy money saver!

• Flights Google

Finding flights can be a big task. When traveling in Europe, I always check these websites. I listed them above.

When taking a flight in Europe, make sure you check the luggage restrictions in size and weight. Especially low-budget airlines charge extra for oversized and overweight luggage.

6. Public Transports (Trains and buses)

My best website for trains in Europe is Omio.com.

You can check train schedules and buses. It is sooooo so easy to use. Love it! The website is relatively new and so powerful. Also, you can buy your train and bus tickets with Omio.com directly as well.

Not a public transport, but a private bus company connecting cities in Europe is Flixbus . It is a great way to travel Europe cheap. Bear in mind, bus trips can be long. Personally, I prefer taking the train.

7. Other: Visa and Internet

For Visa, we have one trusted source.

1. Sort out your Visa with iVisa.com

Before traveling to Europe, make sure you have the correct visa. Make sure you check the right country and if it is part of the Schengen Area. The UK, for instance, is not part of the Schengen area and requires a different visa than Spain.

We love to use iVisa.com for checking out our visa situation. Just add your citizenship and the country you want to visit. It will give you all options for the visa. It even tells you if you need a visa at all.

A European vacation is a trip many of us dream about. Art, history, culture, architecture, food — there’s something for everyone in Europe. As you can imagine, that all comes with a hefty price tag.

While a trip to Europe can be expensive, there are ways to save money . One of those ways is to purchase a vacation package. When you purchase a package consisting of flights and hotels (and even rail tickets, in the case of Europe) there’s a good chance you’ll save money. While it’s not a guarantee, we’ve found the prices of packages are usually less expensive than purchasing flights and hotels separately.

Since there are lots of places to purchase vacation packages, we wanted to narrow it down for you. These 9 websites all offer European vacation packages and will be a great starting point for planning your vacation.

Eurailing Packages is a little different than the rest of our featured websites because instead of a traditional hotel and airfare package, it offers packages that bundle accommodations and train tickets . This will be handy for vacation packages within Europe, but not necessarily for getting to Europe.

Since train travel is very popular in Europe, we thought this was a great option to include in this list. You can choose from the site’s predesigned packages and current deals, or you can build your custom accommodation and rail package.

Something thing to keep in mind when using this website is that the price includes a hostel, not a hotel . You’ll have the option to pay extra for a hotel when you’re finalizing the details of your trip but you won’t know the specific hotel or room type until after your booking is complete.

Hot Tip: Use points and miles to fly to Europe when your vacation package only includes accommodations and rail tickets.

Grand European Travel might be a good place to search for a European vacation package if you’d like the planning done for you. This website offers lots of predesigned trips but doesn’t have the option to make your own. For someone who doesn’t want to do the legwork of planning a trip, that could be a welcome benefit.

If you decide to book a vacation package through Grand European Travel, keep in mind that solo travelers will default to a shared room. If you’d rather have private accommodations, you can select that during the checkout process for an additional charge.

Another nice thing about booking through Grand European Tours is that in addition to only needing to pay a deposit to reserve your trip, you can get a full refund if you need to cancel within 30 days . You can also change your departure date or destination free of charge until 60 days before your trip.

Costco Travel is another great site that can help you find the perfect European vacation. You can choose a curated package or design your own.

While you have to be a Costco member to purchase Costco Travel, you can search for a package without a membership. Often, packages purchased through Costco Travel will come with a Costco Shop Card or extra perks which can more than make up for the price of the membership. Plus, Executive members earn 2% back on purchases, including those from Costco Travel.

If you’re an Executive Member, be sure to keep an eye out for extra perks on your vacation package. These can often make up for the additional cost of an Executive Membership.

Take a look at some of the member benefits we found on a London and Paris vacation package:

• Daily breakfast
• £35 food and beverage credit at the London hotel (Executive Members)
• Fruit basket and chocolates at the Paris hotel (Executive Members)

Bottom Line: You have to be a Costco member to purchase a vacation package from Costco Travel, but you can check prices without being a member. Booking a European trip through Delta Vacations can be a great way to earn lots of Delta SkyMiles .

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for deals that will award you extra bonus points. At the time of writing, you could get up to a $400 Delta gift card or up to 75,000 Delta SkyMiles for booking a flight and hotel package .

You can earn an additional 2 to 3 SkyMiles per $1 spent when you use a Delta co-branded credit card , too.

If you’d rather use Delta SkyMiles to pay for your vacation package, you can do that, too. You can pay for all or part of your vacation with your miles at 1 cent each in value . That’s just about what we value Delta SkyMiles at, so this can represent a good use of miles.

Bottom Line: You can either earn or use SkyMiles for a vacation package purchased through Delta Vacations.

Expedia is a tried-and-true website for booking travel because it’s easy to use and often has great deals. Your European vacation package can be customized to include flights, a hotel, and even a rental car.

The map feature is a great tool for finding a hotel in the perfect location , and there are lots of filtering options that will help narrow your search results even more.

Expedia participates in the One Key rewards program  which allows you to earn and use points on eligible trips and access special member pricing . This is a good way to earn rewards when you don’t participate in a hotel chain’s loyalty program or are booking a hotel that doesn’t have its own loyalty program.

Hot Tip: If you choose a hotel that has its own loyalty program (Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, etc.) you won’t earn hotel points when you book through a third-party website, nor will your elite status be recognized. If hotel points and elite status are important to you, you may want to consider booking direct.

Kayak is a great tool for finding hotels, flights, and vacation packages. It’s a metasearch engine so the prices you’ll see will be from other websites most of the time (though you can occasionally book directly through Kayak). It’s a great way to compare prices from lots of other sites at the same time.

You can use the handy map feature to search for hotels by location or use the filtering options to find a hotel that offers a perk that’s important to you like free breakfast or free parking. There are also options to choose any property type — from apartments to hostels to resorts and everything in between.

United Vacations is a great website to use to search for European vacation packages, especially if you like flying United or live near a United hub that will have lots of flight options.

It can also be a great option for anyone who wants to earn more United MileagePlus miles — you’ll earn them on your vacation package if you provide your membership number at booking. Unfortunately, you can’t redeem United miles for your trip.

This site has many of the sorting and filtering options you’d find on other sites, and you can even add extras like trip insurance or airport transfers to your package.

Bottom Line: You’ll earn United MileagePlus miles when you book a package through United Vacations, but you can’t redeem miles for any part of your trip. Instead, check out these ideas when you’re ready to spend your miles.

CheapTickets is a popular online travel agency for hotels, flights, rental cars, and vacation packages. It’s owned by Expedia so it has the same functionality as that site, but it often has different pricing, so it’s worth checking them both out.

During the booking process, you’ll be able to add extras like airport transportation, a rental car, activities, and trip insurance .

Hot Tip: Before you add trip protection from an online travel agency like CheapTickets, be sure to read up on the policy for your credit card with travel insurance so you don’t end up buying something you may already have. You might also want to price out a policy with a few travel insurance companies to compare plans and prices before you book your trip.

Booking a European vacation package through Priceline is a straightforward and easy process. You can search for any combination of flights, hotels, and cars under the Bundle + Save search tab on the home page. The search results will quickly give you hotel information including the price and how much you can expect to save on the package.

Priceline has its own loyalty program called Priceline VIP that offers discounts, a best rate guarantee, and Express Deal coupons. While these perks are available as soon as you join, the discounts get bigger and better as you reach new status tiers within the program.

Hotel savings start at 10% for all members and go up to 50% on over 45,000 hotels for top-tier VIP Platinum members . Additionally, those with VIP Member or VIP Blue status will get a 5% Express Deal coupon after every trip, VIP Gold members get an 8% Express Deal coupon after every trip, and VIP Platinum members get a 10% Express Deal coupon after every trip.

Hot Tip: Make sure you’re earning lots of points by using a credit card that’s great for purchasing vacation packages .

Now let’s get to the important part — price comparisons. Since it’s hard to compare prices head-to-head for custom packages and ones that include rail tickets, we’ll only be looking at the sites where you can design your own.

For the first example, Expedia has the lowest price by far and the package even includes breakfast! Costco Travel was the most expensive. In the second example, Kayak and Priceline were the lowest-priced options with United Vacations coming in as the most expensive.

As you can see, there’s not a single website that always has the best prices, so it’s always a good idea to price out your vacation package on a few different websites to see where you can get the best deal.

The 17 Best Countries to Visit in Europe

It’s no secret Europe is an appealing continent for country-hopping. Once you’re there, cycle-friendly streets, extensive train systems, and relatively cheap inter-country flights make it highly accessible. Scenery wise, Europe has everything from snowy mountains, lush forests, and glittering beaches to ultra-modern cities, medieval villages, and Neolithic structures. Wherever you go, you can just as easily spend your time immersed in local history, art, and architecture as you can lingering over a four-hour meal, wandering cobblestone streets, or dancing the night (or day) away.

Perhaps the biggest challenge in planning a trip to Europe is deciding where to go. To make it a little easier, we’ve put together a guide to our favorite places. The first nine are the obvious contenders; there’s a reason why these countries are frequently talked about—they’re easily reachable, they’re well-adjusted to tourists, and they feature a wide range of activities, experiences, and landscapes. The remaining eight countries represent equally great options for something similar but slightly more off the beaten path (for non-European tourists, at least). Whichever you choose, you'll find something for every type of traveler.

With four separate countries—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland— the U.K . offers a taste of European diversity. From mountains, lakes, and valleys (like the Mourne Mountains , Snowdonia National Park , and the Scottish Highlands ) to rocky coastlines, rolling hills, and pebble-strewn beaches (like Seven Sisters , the Lake District , and the Pembrokeshire Coast ), it’s a hiker’s paradise. Beyond its natural wonders, the U.K. also boasts lots of lively, inclusive cities packed with bustling literary and expat scenes, LGBTQIA+ history, some of Europe’s best comedy, music, and drag festivals, and a culture centered around food and drink.

Whether you’re exploring some of the world’s best cocktail bars or restaurants in Barcelona and Madrid , lounging in the turquoise waters of the Costa Brava or Tenerife , browsing the art of Bilbao , or marveling at the medieval architecture of Seville or Toledo, one thing unites all of Spain —its warm, welcoming people. Known for closing shops to eat lunch with loved ones and later chatting for hours over pintxos and wine at dinner, Spaniards make time to appreciate life and its simple pleasures, and that energy is delightfully contagious. Solo travelers especially will never feel alone here.

Contrary to Hollywood portrayals, France is more than high-end fashion, delicious pastries, and top-quality wine—though of course those are prevalent. While you can easily live out your ritzy cinematic montage via shopping on the Champs-Élysées , sunbathing on wind-swept piers in the French Riviera , or touring chateaux in wine country, the affordable ways of experiencing French culture are what make it special. Most museums offer free or discounted hours, cabarets often have cheaper performance nights, some of the best meals come from Paris street vendors or Aix-en-Provence markets, and five euro grocery store wine is better than most table wines.

Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, with a partner, or with family, Italy has something for everyone. You can have a city break filled with art and shopping in Milan or Florence or immerse yourself in harrowing history in Pompeii . You can relax on white sand beaches in Sardinia or the Amalfi Coast . You can have an action-packed skiing trip or hiking trip. Whatever you choose to do, there is one thing you can and should explore everywhere, at every opportunity: the country's food and wine scene. Local cooking classes from the village nonna are especially fun.

Although Iceland is slightly harder to reach and could get overcrowded at popular spots like The Blue Lagoon , once you’re here, any hassle is forgotten. There are so many jaw-dropping waterfalls , glaciers , mountains , caves , and hot springs everywhere you look that you’ll forget you’re still on Earth. If you road trip (or travel by horse ) around the Ring Road that circles Iceland’s perimeter, you can also branch off to lesser travelled lava rock fields, fjords, and potential Northern Lights viewing spots. For an extra dose of Icelandic magic scenery, keep an eye out for elf walks .

An excellent choice for nature lovers, history buffs, and partiers alike is Greece . Islands like Santorini , Crete , and Mykonos attract the most visitors and press, but there are literally hundreds of inhabited islands made for hiking, snorkeling, and dancing in the sun. If you prefer city life on the mainland, Athens is the heart of Ancient Greek history with modern levels of fine-dining and nightlife, and Thessaloniki is rich in Byzantine art and international festivals. To combine history and art all in one experience, visit during the brief public opening times of Ancient Greek theaters to catch a play.

With long, dark winter nights and long, bright summer days, Sweden is prime territory for Northern Lights viewing and Midsummer celebrations, but its friendly locals, buzzy student population, and inviting bakeries make it entertaining year-round. Stockholm is a great gateway city, as it has everything you’d want from an urban hub—museums, restaurants, nightclubs, and a distinct mix of architectural styles—plus easy access to day trips , farther afield Swedish cities, and the equally appealing neighboring countries of Norway and Finland. Always make time to enjoy fika , a daily social hour with friends over coffee and pastries like kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon buns).

Known for its breweries , meat-heavy meals, exclusive nightclubs and festivals , and eclectic art scene, Germany is often seen as a hipster’s paradise or the perfect backdrop to a rowdy night out. While it is both of those things—especially Cologne with its university life and Berlin with its extensive street food, street art, and prevalence of eerie abandoned spaces—it’s also a country with impressive architecture, meandering scenic drives , an appreciation for literature , kid-friendly attractions, some of the best Christmas markets in Europe, and a strong commitment to remembering its darker history . 

The Netherlands

Most people associate the Netherlands with three Ws: windmills, waterways, and weed. While it’s difficult to go anywhere without encountering at least one of those—and you should wander canals and frolic in tulip-covered fields—it’s home to more than just natural and “herbal” beauty. The first country to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption, the Netherlands is a welcoming place for LGBTQIA+ visitors and hosts queer-celebratory festivals, performances, and events throughout the year. It’s also edam gouda destination for cheese aficionados, with dedicated cheese museums in Amsterdam and traditional medieval cheese markets easily accessible from the capital city.

If dramatic scenery and its culturally-ingrained love of alcohol attract you to the U.K., Ireland has both—plus even greener landscapes and even kinder locals. You’ll pay steeply in Dublin, especially for attractions like the Guinness Storehouse , but its unique architecture , literary heritage, and theater scene are worth the coin. The best way to see the country, though, is to drive along the western coastline via the Wild Atlantic Way . Accommodation ranges from homestays to full-on castles , and you can traipse woodland waterfalls , befriend Connemara horses, hike the Cliffs of Moher , and hear live music in Galway along the way.

Take everything great about Spain while subtracting the heftier crowds and costs, and you'll get Portugal . In addition to wine and sangria, you can sip on local drinks like port, ginjinha (sour cherry liquor), and vinho verde (green wine) for a few euros a glass, plus intercity train travel and rideshare apps are often cheaper than the bus. Approachability is a big plus, but the highlights are river tours around Porto and the Douro Valley , sampling pastel de nata (egg custard tarts) and pão de deus (coconut bread) in Lisbon , exploring fairytale castles of Sintra , and hopping beaches and coves along the Algarve .

As with France, people often associate Switzerland with elaborate indulgences, like fancy ski resorts , the wealthy city of Geneva , and internationally acclaimed dining . While no trip to Switzerland would be complete without a surplus of fondue and chocolate, some of the best experiences in the country are found outside its cities. Hiking and skiing around its lakes , mountains, and parks will give you the chance to get up close and personal with its natural charm, but you don’t even have to be an active traveler to partake: there are also many ways to catch the views by train .

This central European country shares more than just a border with Italy: it also shares a passion for local wines, truffle-laden pastas, mountaintop skiing, and lakeside castles and hiking—and all at a fraction of the price. Capital city, vegetarian-friendly Ljubljana, is completely walkable, with lots of meandering canals and small farmers’ and flea markets even on the coldest of days. If you head to Slovenia’s most popular lake—Lake Bled—during the off season, you can avoid touristy beach parties and instead enjoy a virtually uninterrupted view of crisp, turquoise water shimmering beneath the mountains.

Faroe Islands

It’s hard to find unspoiled nature, but the Faroe Islands get pretty close. Located between Iceland and Norway, this remote sovereign nation offers the same rugged, otherworldly landscapes as its neighbors, but with significantly less foot, car, and boat traffic. If you’re more of an indoor cat, you may want to give this trip a skip, but otherwise suit up with layers and waterproof gear and get ready to fall in love with puffins. Stay with a local if you can—it’s more traditional, more affordable, and you’ll learn more about respecting the ecosystems around you.

Much like Greece, Croatia can impress steadfast city-breakers as much as die-hard nature-chasers. From summer festivals in Split and Dubrovnik to dedicated booze-cruise boats that take you to islands like Hvar and Brač, it has plenty of opportunities to indulge hedonistic tendencies. Equally prominent, though, are chances to rejuvenate on more remote islands , plan a leisurely food crawl , or hike through forest, mountains, and waterfalls at national parks like Krka or Plitvice Lakes .

Czech Republic

If Germany’s castles, scenic road trips, and literary appreciation are as appealing as its vast quantities of alcohol, the Czech Republic offers all of the above but with smaller crowds and, especially outside its capital, significantly lower costs. The Manx Museum is a must for museum lovers, with unique artifacts from the Island’s Celtic and Viking past.

Delve into Isle of Man’s history at one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the world, Castle Rushen, and consider checking the Peel Castle as well, built by the Vikings.

Sports fans? Plan the trip during The Isle of Man TT, for one of the world’s most thrilling motorcycle races.

And for those looking for a getaway among nature, climb the Snaefell Mountain or walk to the Fairy Bridge. The Isle of Man has something for every kind of traveler.

88 – Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

Welcoming about 1.5 million visitors per year, the Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most impressive attractions in Germany, easily reached on a day trip from Munich.

Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the castle looks straight from a Disney movie. In fact, the resemblances are not a coincidence, as it served as inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Considered one of the most photographed buildings in the world, check the many viewpoints and get the best shots of it – including the famous shot of the castle atop of the hill, from the Queen Mary’s Bridge, also known as Marienbrücke.

Even though it’s not allowed to photograph inside the castle, it’s also worth taking a tour and exploring its magnificent rooms. Remember to book the tickets in advance, especially if you’re planning to visit during the high season.

89 – Durmitor, Montenegro

Montenegro is still a hidden gem compared to other European countries, but the Durmitor National Park is a pretty solid reason for it to be added to everyone’s bucket list.

Home to Europe’s largest and deepest canyon, go rafting in the Tara River, or cross the 365m Đurđevića Tara Bridge and admire this green oasis ready to be explored, standing 170m above the ground.

Take the trail to Bobotov Kuk and admire Montenegro’s highest peak views, or check the 18 glacial lakes spread through the park.

The Durmitor National Park is also perfect for some canyoning, mountain biking, or simply enjoying a relaxing nature retreat with a picnic by the lake.

Consider the 1 km zip line at Extreme Zipline Tara, for those looking for some extra adrenaline, reaching a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

90 – Malta & Gozo

A tiny archipelago bathed by the Mediterranean, Malta is located between Sicily and Tunisia, with warm temperatures during the entire year, making it worth visiting even in December for a warm winter break.

Perfectly blending culture with outdoor adventures, visit the Megalithic Temples of Malta, built by the Neolithic inhabitants and among the oldest temples in the world.

Walk along the city walls of the sunny capital, Valletta, admire the interior of the 16th century St. John’s Cathedral, and look out for some Game of Throne’s filming locations around the island.

Get away from the tourist crowds and admire Mdina’s old streets, swim in the crystal clear waters of the Blue Grotto in Qrendi or the St. Peter’s Pool in Marsaxlokk, and take the whole family to Popeye Village.

Off the main island, stop by Gozo to explore its Ancient Cittadella and marvel at the dramatic coastal formations in Dwejra; or snorkel in Comino’s blue lagoon.

Moving on to the land of fire and ice, encompassing Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, the Vatnajökull National Park is a destination for the adventurous.

From hiking to snowmobiling or even kayaking in a glacier, Vatnajökull National Park is a paradise for outdoor lovers and promises a memorable trip.

For those visiting during wintertime, explore the park’s impressive Ice Caves (that melt during the spring).

92 – Tallinn, Estonia

The charming capital of Estonia, Tallinn, is the country’s major industrial, cultural and financial hub, mixed with a rich history, beautiful architecture and stunning landscapes, making it one of the most beautiful cities to visit in Europe.

Start by exploring the Old Town, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval towns, stroll through its cobblestone streets and try the local restaurants and coffee shops.

But the region has much more to offer besides tasting the best sparkling white wine in the world. Stop by Reims Cathedral and visit the place where French kings were crowned or visit the Archbishop of Reims’ palace, Palace of Tau.

Do you have dreams of strolling through the cobblestone streets of a medieval city? Maybe enjoying the taste of freshly baked pastries while sipping wine in a little cafe?

Europe is full of diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences, but with so many incredible countries, how do you decide where to go and what might not live up to the hype?

When I first started traveling internationally, I started small. Instead of trying to tackle a whole country and burning myself out, I focused on one city at a time. This allowed me to narrow down my favorite European cities and a couple that I would maybe skip if I were you.

My Picks for the Best Cities to Tour in Europe

Lisbon, portugal.

Lisbon will always have a special place in my heart, as my dad’s family is from Portugal. I’ve been lucky enough to visit several times now and can’t recommend it enough. With Air Portugal’s (TAP) stopover program , adding Lisbon or Porto to a trip you’re already taking is super easy.

Lisbon has an awesome food scene going on right now. Make sure to try bacalhau (salted cod), pastéis de nata (custard tarts), and all of the fresh seafood. Don’t miss Time Out Market, an incredible food hall featuring many of Lisbon’s great restaurants under one roof – handy if you’re short on time and want to try a little bit of everything.

Pro tip : Don’t ride the extremely popular vintage Tram 28. It will be overcrowded, and there will be a long line to wait on. It’s also a pickpocket’s dream. Instead, ride Tram 12, which is also one of those adorable vintage tram cars but not as popular. It picks up next to Tram 28 and makes a great 30-minute loop through the older part of Lisbon.

Munich, Germany

What do you think of when someone says “ Munich ?” Most people think of the very famous annual Oktoberfest celebration, but Munich has so much more than that to offer. The city’s architecture is stunning with landmarks such as the Nymphenburg Palace and the Marienplatz, Munich’s central square. Make sure to check out the neo-Gothic New Town Hall with its awesome Glockenspiel show.

Munich is also known for its beautiful parks and gardens, such as the huge English Garden, one of the world’s largest urban parks. You can take a stroll through the park, watch people surf (yep, you heard me), or stop by the Chinese Tower beer garden for food and music. You’ll notice a theme here, but don’t miss Munich’s food hall, Viktualienmarkt, for tons of different food stalls and to try beer from any of the six local breweries.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is one of those places that I can’t shut up about. I’ve been over half a dozen times and don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. The medieval Old Town has the huge Edinburgh Castle looming over it on top of its extinct volcano. The whole place just blows my mind every time I’m there. The castle is worth touring, but a bonus is being able to see the Scottish crown jewels, or Honours, as the Scots call them.

Edinburgh is famous for its Fringe Festival, the world’s largest performing arts festival, which takes place in August every year, along with the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Between the two major events, August is absolutely packed with tourists and, in my opinion, is not the best time to go unless you’re specifically looking to attend one of those two events. I advise going in the fall or spring so you have the place to yourself.

Scotland itself is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of walks and hikes through absolutely jaw-dropping landscapes. Edinburgh, specifically, has Arthur’s Seat, a great hike at the base of the Royal Mile that will give you epic city views. Stop by Holyrood Distillery at the bottom of Arthur’s Seat for a wee dram of whisky to warm you up after your hike.

Florence, Italy

Florence is one of my favorite cities in Italy. I was immediately sucked in by all the art and history. The city’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the magnificent Florence Cathedral or Duomo and its gorgeous dome designed by Brunelleschi. Michelangelo’s David is a must-see, along with the rest of the pieces in the Galleria dell’Accademia.

We can’t forget about the food when you go to Florence . The city is famous for its hearty Tuscan cuisine, featuring dishes like Florentine steak and ribollita. Stop by the Mercato Centrale (yet another food market), which offers a taste of local produce, cheeses, and wines.

I would definitely recommend taking a day trip to the Chianti region for wine tasting. Florence is also one of the best cities to tour in Europe because it’s easy to make your home base for some awesome day trips to other places in Italy.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is one of those cities that was meant to be seen from the water. I would suggest one of the first things you do is take a canal tour. From your boat, you’ll see all the different types of architecture that Amsterdam is known for, like the rows and rows of 17th-century merchant houses and, on the other end of the spectrum, the super-modern Palace of Justice.

I always stay in the museum quarter because it is easy to access from the airport and, of course, the museums. Oh, the museums! You could literally spend your entire visit in the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. There’s also the Anne Frank House, a powerful experience not to be missed.

Pro tip : You will, in fact, miss it if you don’t book several weeks in advance. The Anne Frank House sells out daily, so don’t be disappointed like I was on my first trip to Amsterdam .

London, England

My very first solo international trip was to London , and it couldn’t have been more perfect. London makes my list as one of the best cities to tour in Europe because it is very easy to navigate in terms of language and public transportation.

I’m a big British history nerd, so seeing Kensington Palace, where Queen Victoria grew up, or Queen Elizabeth I’s burial place in Westminster Abbey was definitely high on my bucket list.

Additionally, touring the Tower of London, Shakespeare’s Globe, and Windsor Castle was so epic that I insist first-time travelers do the same. There are also a lot of great museums, like the British Museum, the V&A, and the Tate Modern, if that’s more your thing.

Let’s not forget the West End, either. If you’re a theatre lover like myself, you have to go see a show while you’re in London. Don’t miss Borough Market to round out your trip, a foodie’s dream that has been there since the 12th century.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is often called the “City of a Hundred Spires” because of its stunning skyline of historic towers and churches. One of Prague’s must-see attractions is the Old Town Hall, with its Astronomical Clock, a medieval clock that tells the time and displays the sun and moon’s movement. Every hour, crowds gather to watch the clock’s procession of the Twelve Apostles.

Check out the Charles Bridge, which takes you across the Vltava River. From there, you can take a really nice walk or a funicular ride up to Petrin Hill. There, you’ll find lovely gardens and the Petrin Tower, a smaller version of the Eiffel Tower, with spectacular views over Prague.

Budapest, Hungary

Something I didn’t know about Budapest is that it’s actually two halves, with the hilly Buda district on one side and the flat Pest district on the other. The Danube River bisects the city. Kind of cool, right?

While you’re visiting, make sure to see the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, the beautiful Chain Bridge, and the city’s thermal baths, like Széchenyi and Gellért Baths. The Hungarian State Opera House and the Museum of Fine Arts are also must-visits for those looking for a little cultural night out.

Venice, Italy

Venice is one of those places where some travelers will roll their eyes and say it’s too touristy. Maybe it is, but I would still tell you to go because it’s touristy for a reason. It’s just incredibly beautiful.

With that in mind, you should know that Venice has recently established a day tripper tax. If you’re visiting from April to July, you’ll either have to pay a five-euro fee to enter, or your hotel or group tour will handle it. The idea is to minimize overcrowding and lessen the stress on Venice’s resources during peak season.

Whenever you visit, book “skip the line” tickets for things like St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. Even in the off-season, the lines can take up much of your time. There are also world-class museums to visit, such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Gallerie dell’Accademia.

I would also highly recommend booking a cicchetti food tour. Cicchetti is similar to tapas. It is small plates or quick bites of something. Cicchetti is usually served with a glass of wine in the late afternoon/early evening. Booking a cicchetti tour with a local is a great way to try a little something from many restaurants, and you’ll always end up stopping at places you never would have found on your own.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The picturesque Nyhavn harbor, lined with colorful 17th-century townhouses, is your classic image of Copenhagen . However, Copenhagen is also renowned for its commitment to sustainability and innovative urban design. The city’s extensive cycling paths and green spaces, like the King’s Garden and Fælledparken, make it a great spot for lovers of the outdoors.

Things not to miss are the Rosenborg Castle and the Amalienborg Palace, the royal family’s residence. There’s also Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks and, some believe, Walt Disney’s inspiration.

You can’t talk about magic in Copenhagen, though, without mentioning Hans Christian Andersen. The Hans Christian Andersen Experience celebrates the writer’s life, and you can also see the statue of the Little Mermaid at the Langelinie Promenade.

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels is an absolute paradise for food lovers. It is famous for its culinary delights, including Belgian waffles, chocolates, and the always delicious moules-frites (mussels and fries). The city’s numerous markets, like the Sunday market at the Gare du Midi, offer a chance to taste local produce and international cuisine.

Brussels is also home to excellent museums such as the Magritte Museum, dedicated to the surrealist artist René Magritte, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, which house an impressive Flemish and Belgian art collection.

Make sure to see the Atomium, originally built for the 1958 Brussels World Expo. It is Belgium’s most popular tourist attraction, attracting 600,000 people a year. Going the whole way to the top offers incredible views of Brussels.

Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux in southwestern France is a must-visit destination for wine connoisseurs. The city is surrounded by some of the world’s most famous vineyards, producing renowned wines such as Château Margaux and Château Latour.  You can book wine tours offering tastings and insights into winemaking.

However, Bordeaux isn’t just wine, as its historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, proves. You can visit the Place de la Bourse, where the fountain of the Three Graces is, and the Bordeaux Cathedral, a gorgeous Gothic church.

Unpopular Opinion: 3 European Cities That I’d Skip

Santorini, greece.

While Santorini is famous for its stunning sunsets and picturesque white-washed buildings, it has become overwhelmingly crowded, especially during peak tourist season. The influx of visitors has led to inflated prices for accommodations, dining, and activities.

The charm of Santorini can often be overshadowed by the sheer number of tourists (and influencers), making it difficult to fully enjoy its beauty and serenity.

Paris, France

I know this will be controversial, but Paris can be a tough one for American tourists, not that we haven’t brought that on ourselves to some degree. I haven’t had great experiences with Parisian locals despite my best efforts.

The high prices for hotels, dining, and attractions can strain a travel budget, and the city’s most famous sites, like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, are often packed with long lines and crowds.

Also, as of the summer of 2024, you should check before you go whether there are any strikes or protests that may disrupt your trip.

Rome, Italy

I hate to say it, but Rome is my least favorite place in Italy. It’s dirty, and the traffic is terrible. There’s graffiti on ancient monuments, which just blows my mind. It’s just not my jam. However, when I take people to Italy, I do stop in Rome briefly just so they can see the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, etc. There are some things you just can’t skip.

Obviously, there are way more incredible cities to tour in Europe than I could have possibly covered here, but hopefully, this will give you a great place to start when planning your next trip. The important thing is to pick a place and just get out there!
