Antietam National Battlefield

Sharpsburg is located in Washington County, Maryland about 20 minutes south of Pennsylvania. The town was first settled in 1740 and boomed after the C&O Canal was extended in 1836. Sharpsburg was the site of the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General George B. McClellan faced off on September 17, 1862, totaling in more than 23,000 casualties. The Antietam National Battlefield was established by the National Park Service to preserve the battlefield and educate visitors about the battle and the Civil War.
