October is a great month to visit Spain; temperatures are mild as winter comes closer, and tourism is not in its peak season.

I find October the perfect month for strolling the streets and watching the leaves turn orange, burgundy, and yellow. You might have to carry an umbrella, but it is also part of the beauty.

If you visit Spain in October, I am sure you will fall in love with every corner of the country. Some days are a bit rainy, and others bring warm sun rays, but overall you feel like you are in a comfort movie when you know everything will be alright.

In this article, I will list seven tips and five cities where you can experience the best of Spain in October.

Table of Contents ▼ ▶

TRAVEL TIPS

1. get tickets for the best halloween parties in madrid and barcelona.

Spain is not a big fan of Halloween. The only time Spanish people are genuinely excited to wear disguises is for carnival. However, during the past years, Spain has welcomed so many internationals that the American celebrations of Halloween have made their way into some cities.

In Madrid and Barcelona, the two biggest cities in Spain, you will find stores decorated with Halloween-themed objects and parties being organized everywhere.

So! If you are in Spain in October and have a party mood, look up places like Îstar, ICON, or Kapital in Madrid, and Opium or Razzmatazz in Barcelona, and book your Halloween party.

If you are in Madrid, visit the cultural center, Casa Mexico, and look at their impressive exhibition of “Día de los Muertos.”

2. EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF NATURE IN AUTUMN

Retiro Park in autumn is one of the most stunning views of Madrid in October. Just like out of a movie, Retiro turns into an orange palette, with yellowish and ochre colors that invite you to take romantic walks.

It is not the best time to picnic, but you can get a hot chocolate at  La mejor Tarta de Chocolate del Mundo  or some good coffee at Nommad Cafe and walk through Retiro.

Other beautiful pieces of nature where you can observe the autumn and enjoy a walk are Campo de Moro, Plaza de España, and Templo de Debod. Except for Campo de Moro, in Plaza de España and Templo de Debod, you can also sit to enjoy chilly autumn afternoons with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

You can get your beverage at Starbucks, Faborit, and The Fix (calle Luis Fernanda).

3. EXPERIENCE THE NATIONAL DAY OF SPAIN

Remember that October 12th is the National Day of Spain; Spaniards commemorate the day Christopher Columbus arrived in America. Even though this could be considered a controversial day, it has been celebrated for over 88 years.

On this day, Spanish people celebrate with a military parade, where essential figures such as the king and the president of Spain attend.

If you visit Madrid or Barcelona on October 12th, remember that it is a national holiday, so two things might happen: stores are closed, and travel essentials (flights, trains, and accommodation) have higher fees.

Read more about this national holiday in our featured article:

Why is National Day of Spain October 12? Hispanic Day!

4. VISIT ZARAGOZA FOR “FIESTAS DEL PILAR”

Basilica Virgen del Pilar Zaragoza

The “Fiesta del Pilar” commemorates “Our Lady Virgin of the Pillar” on the day of Her appearance to the Apostle James the Greater in AD 40 while he was preaching in what is now Spain.

Nowadays, the celebration lasts a week from October 7th to October 15th, being her official day on October 12th.

Virgen del Pilar Zaragoza

People in Zaragoza celebrate for ten full days with exquisite gastronomy, parades, live presentations, religious events, and fireworks.

If you want some good food, then you need to go to the fair at the Plaza de los Sitios, where you will find a variety of food trucks, the traditional “Carpas del Ternasco de Aragón,” and the “Muestras de Zaragoza.” I recommend you try the  ternasco  (pork), the Aragonese crumbs, and the  torrijas .

Additionally, if you want to participate in the traditional religious ceremonies, you must wake up early for the “Rosario de la Aurora.” You would walk less than 1 KM while praying the rosary on your way to the Virgin’s Basilica.

Once there, I recommend you stay and experience the beginning of the Flower Offering, from 7h00 AM to 20h45 PM.

Finally, on the last day of “las fiestas,” the city closes the celebration with fireworks and begins the countdown for the following year.

You have two affordable ways to get to Zaragoza: train and bus. If you go by train, check out Iryo and Ouigo. Both train companies tend to offer better prices and services than Renfe.

5. BOOK SOME VINEYARDS IN THEIR BEST SEASON

The harvest season in Spain is between August and October, but the best moment to enjoy a vineyard is between the final days of September and the first week of August.

We already have a featured article with the best vineyards in Spain, so check it out here:

Spanish Vineyards: Insider’s Guide to the Best Wine Tours

If you visit Spain in October, explore some vineyards for two to three days. The country has 138 official wine designations and over 4,000 wineries; wherever you go, you can visit a vineyard if you do your previous research.

However, there are specific vineyards renowned as the best in the world, which are more than worth visiting if you are a wine enthusiast.

For example, I highly recommend renting a car, traveling to Logroño for a weekend, and visiting the best vineyards in La Rioja. You can choose between the iconic Marqués de Riscal, Marqués de Murrieta, and Bodegas Muga in this area. All of them offer visits to the vineyards, pairings, and gastronomic experiences that will become the highlight of your trip.

You can get to La Rioja from Madrid and Barcelona, but if you only visit the Catalan capital, I recommend Bodegas Codorniu and Bodegas Torres. You can also experience great wine tours and gastronomic delights, such as dinner at the Celleret at Bodegas Torres.

If you are in Barcelona, you can also attend the  Wine and Cava Festival  in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia in the first days of October.

6. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SEASON

Many things improve in Spain from September to October, from the weather to prices. October is the perfect month between the scorching summer and the soon-to-be freezing winter when also prices increase because of the holidays.

Good weather will make your time in Spanish cities more pleasant, especially if you want to visit Andalusia. Autumn in October is the perfect season to travel to Malaga, Granada, Cordoba, Seville, etc., to enjoy pleasant, warm afternoons with a tinto de verano on a terrace and chilly nights.

Prices are still decent and affordable for planes, trains, and accommodation. And don’t forget about the summer liquidation; you can get the outfits for the next hot season at half the original price.

7. DRESS FOR THE SEASON, NOT THE WEATHER

Once you set foot in Spain, you will notice that Spanish people are fashionable. Regardless of the volatile weather in the first days of October, autumn is autumn, which means boots, jackets, pants, and a more obscure color palette that matches the season.

So, if you want to blend in, don’t wear Bora Bora’s or shorts. Pay close attention to what people in the street are wearing, and you will look like one more local!

1. MARBELLA

Marbella in Spain

Marbella enjoys delightful weather in October, with temperatures ranging from  22° to 15°.  With days at 20 degrees, you can wander through the charming Old Town, stroll along the picturesque promenade, and discover historic landmarks like the  Castle Walls  and  Ermita de Santiago .

Another must-visit is Marbella’s  Puerto Banús . Here, you can admire impressive yachts, shop at high-end boutiques, and indulge in a sumptuous meal at one of the waterfront restaurants.

Enjoy an afternoon at the  Arab-inspired Hammams  in Marbella for ultimate relaxation. Relax in the steamy baths and pamper in rejuvenating spa treatments.

One of the highlights of visiting Marbella in October is the sight of the  almond trees in bloom . As the countryside comes alive with delicate pink and white blossoms, you’ll be surrounded by nature’s enchanting gift.

In addition to the city itself, near Marbella, you can discover the stunning  white villages  of Andalusia, such as  Ojén  and  Mijas , which offer a glimpse into traditional Spanish summer culture.

Whether you seek beachside relaxation, cultural experiences, or pure luxury, Marbella promises an unforgettable journey in the coast of Andalusia.

Cuenca in Spain

In the heart of Castilla-La Mancha, Cuenca offers a magical blend of historical landmarks, breathtaking landscapes, and cultural experiences that will leave you in awe.

In October, Cuenca welcomes visitors with mild and pleasant weather, with temperatures ranging from  18° to 10° .

Getting to Cuenca from Madrid is easy, with various convenient transportation options. You can hop on a comfortable Renfe train, and in just 1.5 to 2 hours, you’ll find yourself in the heart of this enchanting city. Alternatively, you can take a bus ride that takes approximately 2 to 3 hours or opt for the freedom of renting a car and embarking on a delightful 2-hour journey along the A-3 road.

The most iconic landmark in Cuenca is the iconic  Casas Colgadas  (Hanging Houses), which seem to defy gravity as they cling to the cliffs overlooking the Huécar River Gorge. The Hanging Houses symbolize Cuenca’s unique architecture and a sight not to be missed.

The  Cuenca Cathedral  is a majestic blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles. Its intricate façade and stunning interior will transport you to a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich heritage.

Take a stroll through Cuenca’s  Old Town , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and lose yourself in the medieval ambiance. Cross the  Hanging Bridge  (Puente de San Pablo) for breathtaking views of the Hanging Houses, offering perfect photo opportunities.

Cuenca in October promises an enchanting adventure filled with historical wonders, surreal landscapes, and cultural treasures.

3. GIBRALTAR

Suppose you’re searching for a distinctive destination for your October trip to Spain. In that case, Gibraltar offers an extraordinary experience with its fascinating blend of British and Spanish influences and  iconic landmarks .

During October, Gibraltar enjoys pleasant weather, with temperatures ranging from  22° to 17° degrees , making it an excellent time to explore this small but vibrant city. So, it s the perfect destination if you want a different place to visit close to Spain.

How do you get to Gibraltar?

You can fly directly from Madrid to Gibraltar International Airport in just 1.5 hours, providing a quick and convenient way to reach the city.

Alternatively, a scenic road trip by car takes approximately 6-7 hours, allowing you to enjoy the Spanish countryside.

Once in Gibraltar, start your journey by visiting the  Rock of Gibraltar;  you can get there by taking the cable car and marvel at the breathtaking views of the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain, and Morocco. The Rock is a geographical wonder and home to  St. Michael’s Cave , a stunning network of caverns boasting impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Now, you must be careful with the  Barbary macaques , Europe’s only wild monkey population. Explore the  Gibraltar Nature Reserve , where you can witness these playful monkeys roaming freely in their natural habitat.

Some say Tarifa I the southernmost point in Spain and that when you get there, you can see Morocco on the horizon. However, something similar can be experienced in Gibraltar at its  Europa Point.  Europa Point Lighthouse is a must-visit for a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

For history fans, the  Great Siege Tunnels  offer a fascinating journey into the city’s military past. The tunnels were carved during the 18th century when France and Spain tried to recover Gibraltar from the British.

Another landmark is the  Moorish Castle , an ancient fortress offering glimpses into Gibraltar’s historical significance.

Gibraltar in October is a great option to do something different while visiting Spain!

Tarifa Spain

Tarifa’s weather in October goes from 21° to 17°, offering an ideal climate to enjoy beaches, such as  Playa de los Lances  and  Playa de Valdevaqueros.

If you are interested, there are two ways to get there: by train and car; both take approximately six hours.

Rent a car and experience a roadtrip through southern Spain!

If you want to try some water sports in autumn, Tarifa is perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Its consistent winds make it an ideal time for beginners and experienced windsurfers to keep getting into the ocean way past summer.

What can you see in Tarifa?  The  Casco Antiguo  and the  Guzmán el Bueno Castle  are must-visit places that reflect the city’s history.

Remember what I said about Tarifa being the southmost tip of Spain? Just a short ferry away, you can visit Tangier, Morocco. Attention! Remember to check the requisites of entry to Morocco.

Evening temperatures hovering around 60°F make it pleasant for lingering at outdoor cafés and experiencing Seville's lively tapas culture. The nearby white villages of Andalusia also offer excellent day-trip opportunities amid fall's arrival in the countryside.

Costa del Sol • Best Place for Great Weather

The sun-drenched Costa del Sol along southern Spain's Málaga province is a prime spot for great weather in October. Iconic beach towns like Marbella and Estepona enjoy abundant sunshine and average highs of 75°F to 80°F. The cool Mediterranean breezes take the edge off, creating perfect conditions for you to enjoy the Costas' many outdoor activities, from golf and tennis to sailing and hiking. The water temperatures also remain quite pleasant in the upper 60s Fahrenheit. With very little rainfall, you can count on idyllic weather for relaxing on the beaches or exploring coastal villages like Nerja or Frigiliana.

Madrid • Best Place for Families with Children

Madrid shines as a family destination in the fall month of October, when warm, sunny days are the norm and crowds are minimal. Your kids will be entertained by the city's large green spaces, like Buen Retiro Park with its rowing pond and puppet shows. The Prado Museum offers excellent child-friendly tours to spark their imaginations, including art workshops, storytelling, and scavenger hunts. Evening fun includes theater performances or sampling the local favorite treat, chocolate con churros . With moderate temperatures, it's also a perfect time to explore Madrid's plazas and outdoor cafés.

Galicia • Best Place to Avoid the Crowds

If you are looking to dodge the crowds in Spain in October, the northwestern region of Galicia is an ideal choice. With its rugged Atlantic coastline, quaint fishing villages, and lush, green interior, Galicia sees far fewer visitors than Catalunya or Andalusia. The cooler, rainier weather deters some, but Galicia offers an authentic slice of Spanish culture largely devoid of tourist mobs. Explore the centuries-old pilgrimage town of Santiago de Compostela, the Roman wall-enveloped city of Lugo, or wander the coastal inlets and fjord-like rías without fighting throngs of summer vacationers. October's lower season also yields more alluring prices and availability.

San Sebastián • Best Place for Couples or Honeymooners

The chic seaside city of San Sebastián in Spain's Basque Country is a dream destination for couples and honeymooners in October. With its Baroque churches, Belle Époque architecture, and romantic winding streets, San Sebastián oozes old-world European charm. Famed for its exceptional pintxos bars and Michelin-starred restaurants, it's a foodie paradise for lingering over incredible meals and local txakoli wines. Stroll the scenic La Concha beach promenade, explore nearby fishing villages, or take a winery tour through the lush Rioja wine region for romantic memories of a lifetime. The mild fall climate makes it comfortable for outdoor activities and cozy evenings along the picturesque harborfront.

Harvest Festivals and Wine Tastings

In Spain in October, you can immerse yourself in the annual grape harvest celebrations. From the famed Rioja region to lesser-known areas like Ribera del Duero, wineries and towns host lively festivals with music, dancing, food pairings, and plenty of vino. It's an incredible opportunity to experience Spanish wine culture at its most vibrant. As you meander through the vineyards, you'll witness the time-honored traditions of harvesting grapes by hand, a labor-intensive process that has been passed down through generations. The festive atmosphere is infectious, with locals and visitors coming together to celebrate the hard work and dedication that goes into producing each bottle of renowned Spanish wine.

El Pilar Festival in Zaragoza

One of Spain's biggest festivals, El Pilar honors the city's patron saint with nine days of revelry. Join the massive processions, partake in the open-air dances and concerts, and experience the iconic "rain of petals" ceremony as thousands of flower petals cascade from the basilica. Join locals as the streets come alive with traditional music and the aromas of delectable Spanish cuisine. No matter where you turn, you'll be swept up in the infectious energy and rich cultural heritage that makes this festival a truly unforgettable experience.

Mushroom Foraging in Catalunya

With fall's arrival, mushroom hunting becomes a national pastime. In Catalunya, take a guided foraging tour through forests and countryside to identify edible (and poisonous) varieties. Afterward, savor your bounty with lunch at a rustic Catalan farmhouse. Led by experienced guides, you'll learn the art of mushroom hunting, a tradition passed down through generations, as you carefully navigate through the lush landscapes searching for the prized fungi. The sense of accomplishment is unparalleled as you gather your haul, ready to be transformed into mouthwatering dishes that celebrate the earthy flavors of the season.

Hiking Spain's Classic Caminos

October's mild, dry weather makes it ideal for hiking some of Spain's famed trails, like the Camino de Santiago or Camino del Rey. Follow these historic pilgrimage routes through scenic landscapes ablaze in fall colors. As you traverse the winding paths, you'll be enveloped by the breathtaking vistas of rolling hills, lush forests, and quaint villages that have stood the test of time. The crisp autumn air and the crunch of fallen leaves beneath your feet will be the perfect accompaniment to this rejuvenating journey, allowing you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature's tranquility.

Spain in October

where to visit spain in october

The country-wide average temperatures for October (which is kind of a silly number to come up with, really, as the country’s climate varies so widely from one region to another, but I’m just quoting the official Spain tourism website here) are just over 70F (25C) for a high and just over 52F (11C) for a low. Because some of Spain’s most popular cities are absolutely stifling in the height of summer, they’re really best avoided until the shoulder seasons – October is probably the best month to visit cities like Madrid , for instance.

But even though some parts of Spain can get cooler in late October, in some places it’s still totally possible to include lying on the beach in your vacation plans! You’ll need to check with current weather forecasts, but especially if you’re going to the Costa del Sol, you might want to consider bringing your bathing suit with you. Some average temperatures for Spain in October, listed by city, are:

  • Barcelona – 70F high, 54F low
  • Madrid – 68F high, 46F low
  • Seville – 79F high, 55F low
  • Santiago – 84F high, 48F low
  • Malaga – 73F high, 57F low

The rainfall levels in Spain in October vary by region and city, but the country-wide average is just over 68mm for October. Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid average about 10 rainy days in October, while Seville, Granada and Malaga average only 8. Cities like Santiago and Bilbao average more rainy days, coming in at 18 and 15 respectively.

As for the festivals in October in Spain, the biggest country-wide holiday all month is Spain’s national holiday on October 12, the Dia de la Hispanidad – also known as Columbus Day. This means that lots of things will be closed, including banks and some tourist attractions. If October 12 falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday, some shops may also be closed the Monday before or Friday afterwards as well – check with your hotel or hostel to find out more. Some other holidays and festivals which take place around Spain in October are:

  • Bienal de Flamenco – From mid-September through mid-October, this is a very important flamenco festival in Seville, but it only takes place every two years (in the even years).
  • La Fiesta del Pilar – In Zaragoza on October 12, this is perhaps the biggest festival of the month; it dates back to 40AD and involves parades, music, and dances.
  • Barcelona Film Festivals – During October, Barcelona runs two film festivals – one for erotic films early in the month, and just after that one for gay & lesbian films.
  • Other Film Festivals – October is film festival month in Spain, with festivals in Albacete, Sitges, Valencia, and San Sebastian. The latter is a horror & fantasy film festival.
  • Festival de Otono – From mid-October through early November, Madrid is home to this performing arts festival.

And just in case you happen to be in the Alpujarras mountains in early October, be sure to swing into the town of Cadiar where they mark their Feria de Octubre by replacing all the water in the city’s fountains with wine.

Festivals, Events, and Things to Do in Spain in October

If you're visiting Spain in the fall, you're probably not headed to  one of the country's beaches  because the  weather in October  is a little too chilly for sunbathing. However, if you love days that are sunny and warm but not too hot and nights that are cool enough for a sweater, October might be the best time of year for you to visit because there's plenty to do both indoors and outdoors this month.

Many towns, especially on the Costa del Sol, have their annual  feria  (Spanish for "festival") in October, so you can expect to see street stalls selling local food and drink as the residents party all day and night no matter where you go. This is also the season for film festivals in Spain, and the Madrid bullfighting season starts at the end of the month.

Whether you're in search of a traditional festival or you want to experience the culture of a large city at a special event, there are places you can go in Spain that offer unique ways to immerse yourself in Spanish customs and traditions.

Run Through Bilbao

Ferias Across Spain: Local Traditions in Smaller Towns

 Marta Ortiz/Getty Images

Spain follows age-old Catholic traditions honoring the towns' patron saints, and the majority of these special Saints' Days feature offerings and shows of respect to the images of the saints as well as parades and processions where the statues are carried through the streets. Look for a  Feria  in a small town to experience traditional Spain.

  • Fiestas del Pilar:  The city of Zaragoza in Aragon honors the city's patron saint, Virgin Mary of the Pillar, at this annual festival. The weeklong event features shows, contests, and parades; highlights include the offering of flowers and fruits to the Virgin Mary and the glass rosary parade featuring floats made entirely of glass.
  • Feria de Fuengirola :  Also called Feria del Rosario, this celebration in Fuengirola is held every October 6 through 12 at the fairground. Locals bring their carriage horses and carriages and wear their finest traditional garb—flamenco dresses for women and suits for men. The fair includes rides, live music, flamenco dancing, and fair foods.
  • Feria de Nerja :   Nerja hosts this weeklong celebration honoring its patron saints of the Virgin of Anguish and Archangel Saint Michael. Festivities take over much of the town but focus mainly on the east and west sides of the town center. This family-friendly festival features music, horses, parades, concerts, fair rides, dancing, and children's activities.
  • Fiestas de San  Lucas :  In Jaen, known as the world's olive oil capital, the city honors its patron saint, St. Luke. For more than a week, fair-goers can experience concerts, bullfights, dancing, local foods, and cultural and sporting events.
  • Romería de Valmen :  In Dos Hermanas, near Seville, there is the Romería de Valme religious pilgrimage on the third Sunday of October every year. The colorful processions honor the Virgen de Valme and statues of her are paraded through the streets.

🛤 Thinking about venturing outside the city?

Discover all the events going on in Catalonia in October , from watching horror movies at one of the world’s most renowned film festivals to celebrating Halloween in Spain’s most visited theme park.

Is October a good time to visit Barcelona?

Absolutely! October is one of our favourite months to stay in Barcelona.

Temperatures are much more manageable  than in summer months, but it’s still  sunny  to sit on a terrace and enjoy a vermouth or a beer. The brave ones can even dare to dip in the sea!

Also,  the flocks of tourists are gone , so  the city has a more local vibe  than in peak season.

And regardless of the end of the high season, there are still plenty of things to do to enjoy the Catalan capital.

⚠️ Important!

The  12th of October is a public holiday  in Spain, the National Day of Spain. On this day, people commemorate the country’s long history. So, it’s not unusual to see demonstrations in Barcelona with people carrying Spanish flags.

If you plan on going to a specific restaurant or shop, check if it’s open in advance, as most of them close that day.

The weather in Barcelona in October

The beach weather may be over, but it’s still sunny and dry in October in the Catalan capital.

🌡 Temperatures

The  average high during the day is 23ºC  (73ºF), so you can still wear a T-shirt at midday. At night, temperatures are lower, with an  average low of 17ºC  (62ºF). You’ll need a jumper or thin jacket, but you can safely leave your winter jacket at home.

It’s not very humid in Barcelona in autumn, which makes the warm weather even more enjoyable.

Although it’s sunny most of the time, there are, on average,  6 days of rain in Barcelona in October . This makes it one of Barcelona’s wetter months. So, grabbing an umbrella or a rain jacket and having a couple of indoor plans in mind is a good idea!

☀️ Hours of light

Throughout October, days get shorter and shorter. The average day in Barcelona during October has  11.2 hours  of daylight, with sunrise at 8 am and sunset at 7 pm. It’s a wonderful time of the year to enjoy sunrise and sunset, as you don’t have to wake up very early or stay up til late.

Also,  remember that you have to delay the clock by one hour on the night of the 30th to the 31st of October.

What to pack for a trip to Barcelona in October

A helpful rule of thumb is  packing layers . During the day, it’ll probably be hot enough to wear a short-sleeve T-shirt, but it can be cool in the evening, so it’s wise to pack a warm layer or two.

Regarding bottoms, we recommend packing some long pairs of pants, skirts, and one pair of shorts.

Pack something lightweight that you don’t mind carrying if you encounter warmer patches in the day.

Regarding shoes,  sneakers are a great option . Bring the appropriate footwear if you plan to go hiking in or near Barcelona, like Montserrat.

What’s on in Barcelona in October

What are the plans in Barcelona for October? The ideas we mention below are updated for 2024:

Enjoy a street festival in one of Barcelona’s neighbourhoods

Each district in Barcelona celebrates its own Festa Major , and they are  the most authentic parties you can attend .

Don’t think about fancy dresses, expensive entrance tickets, and renowned international DJs. To give you a better idea, you can think of  Festes Majors  as big street parties.

They usually involve  traditional events , like  correfocs  (fire runs),  sardanes  (a typical dance),  castells  (human towers) ,  and  gegants  (giant sculptures that dance). But also  open-air concerts ,  neighbourhood dinners  al fresco , and lots of fun!

They are free-to-attend events and it’s almost impossible to find reliable info on them in English… But here we’ll mention the most important ones happening in October in Barcelona:

Festa Major de Sarrià (29th Sep to 13th Oct)

From the 29th Sep to the 13th Oct (dates to be confirmed), it’s the turn of the neighbourhood of Sarrià to organise its Festa Major.

The neighbours decorate their balconies, join community dinners in the streets, and organise activities such as  flam  (pudding) eating contest!

At night, there is usually live music, and if you go there on Saturday the 5th, there’s the popular correfoc , a fire run through various streets of the historic centre. If you want to join, dress accordingly: cotton clothing, with sleeves, long trousers, a cotton hat and leather sports shoes that hold your feet properly.

Festa Major de Les Corts (4th to 13th Oct)

Les Corts is another neighbourhood in Barcelona that celebrates its  Festa Major  at the beginning of October.

On the 4th Oct, you can join the  correfoc  at 9.30 pm, followed by a music concert and DJ. Another celebration highlight is the other  correfoc  on 11th Oct at 8 pm, followed by a firework display .

If you’re into running, a 10 km race on 8th Oct at 9 am raises funds to fight against cerebral paralysis.

Festa del Roser (7th to 12th Oct)

Want to see the famous street La Rambla more alive than ever? Then, head there in October, when the Festa del Roser takes place.

Also known as Festa Major de La Rambla , this celebration has brought neighbours together since 1961.

It’s a wonderful time to visit important buildings, such as the Museu Marítim or the Liceu Theatre, as they are beautifully decorated with flowers . Also, in honour of this celebration, there is free access to famous landmarks like Palau Guell, Paula Moja, and the Liceu Theatre .

Savour tasty food at Mercat de Mercats (18th to 20th Oct)

If you’re a foodie like us, you’ll love this one!

Mercat de Mercats  is  one of Barcelona’s largest gastronomic events  and the best excuse to try out Catalonia’s best food.

This year’s edition takes place in  Plaça de Glòries , with  more than 50 market stalls  run by restaurants, local farmers, bars, and winemakers. So, make sure you skip breakfast and save space for all the food you’ll encounter here!

Besides the stalls  open from 11 am to 10 pm , you’ll also find cooking shows, live music, and a space with BBQs and microwaves to cook the fish, meat, and veggies you buy there.

Fruit and vegetables in the market La Boqueria

Visit La Pedrera…at night!

Visiting a Gaudí building is always a jaw-dropping experience, but doing so at night makes the experience even more incredible!

If you’re in for a unique activity, switch a daily visit to Casa Milà (a.k.a. La Pedrera) for a nocturnal one. With La Pedrera Night Experience , you’ll get an evening tour of the house before heading up to the roof for a video mapping show with a glass of  cava .

Eat chestnuts and sweet potatoes

Right around the beginning of October, you’ll start noticing the balmy scent of  baked sweet potatoes and  hot, freshly roasted chestnuts in the air. So delicious!

Around this time of year, specialist vendors take to the streets to sell their autumn delicacies. We love to grab roasted chestnuts, usually cradled in newspaper cones, which makes our strolls around the city even more enjoyable!

A person holding chestnuts in her hands

Listen to jazz music

Festival Jazz Barcelona  is  the city’s oldest musical event , with over 50 editions.

This festival fills different venues in the city with  renowned jazz artists from all over the world , like singer António Zambujo or musician Mulatu Astatke.

So, if you happen to be here in October and like to listen to live music, this is an excellent opportunity! Concerts happen every night in stunning locations like the Palau de la Música Catalana or the famous club Jamboree.

Visit Barcelona’s landmarks for free during the 48h Open House Barcelona (26th and 27th of October)

On the 26th and 27th of October,  over 200 buildings  of every shape and size open their doors to the public  completely free of charge .

48h Open House Barcelona  is Barcelona’s   main architectural event . It’s an initiative that started in 2010 to give the opportunity to understand and experience architecture in a unique way.

You’ll come across churches, schools, sports centres, apartment blocks, libraries and restaurants in Barcelona and surrounding cities. Most are usually totally or partially inaccessible to the general public, so it can be your only chance to visit them!

Celebrate La Castanyada (31st October)

While most of the Western World celebrates Halloween on the evening of the 31st of October , we’re busy eating roasted chestnuts and panellets .

Yes, we celebrate La Castanyada ( the chestnut party ) in Catalonia instead of Halloween. And what do we do?

We gather with family and friends and eat chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and panellets , the culinary stars of La Castanyada. Panellets  are so popular that in the last week of the month, bakeries sell nearly a million kilos of them!

Fancy celebrating like a local? Check out our “ Castanyada: What it is and how we celebrate the Catalan Halloween ” guide, where you can learn how to make panellets , where to buy them, and the history around this peculiar tradition.

A tray with different kinds of panellets

Dress up and enjoy a terrific Halloween

Although not a local tradition by any means, Halloween celebrations are becoming more and more popular in Barcelona.

Many bars and clubs put on special events , decorating the rooms with creepy stuff and giving prizes for the best dress costume. So, don’t be afraid to dress up, you won’t be alone for sure!

If you’re not into parties but still want to celebrate Halloween with a spooky activity, we recommend joining this Ghost and Legends Tour . You’ll learn about all the horrifying stories of Barcelona’s past while strolling around the cobbled streets of the Gothic Quarter.

Season after season, Spain offers a rich and diverse range of experiences © leonov.o / Shutterstock

Spain consistently ranks as one of the most-visited destinations in the world for good reason. This vibrant and multifaceted European country has attractions that resonate with every kind of traveler.

Whether you’re a culture enthusiast seeking to immerse yourself in art and architecture , a sun worshipper looking for spectacular beaches and islands , a passionate gourmand embarking on a culinary tour or even a spiritual adventurer wishing to retrace the footsteps of pilgrims , Spain is one of those rare destinations that offers a rich and diverse range of experiences, season after season.

Consider what you’re looking for in a visit to Spain and plan ahead. Are you traveling on a shoestring budget? Looking for the best time to soak up the sun on a sandy coastline, or eager to feast in a harvest festival?

Here are some of the best times to visit this fascinating Iberian destination.

April to May and September to October are the best times for perfect weather

In central Spain and on the Mediterranean coast, the spring and autumn seasons are marked by sunlit days and pleasant weather perfect for strolling and outdoor dining in terrazas , with temperatures cooling down by nightfall.

Conversely, the summer months of July to August are scorching, with temperatures in central and southern Spain reaching the mid-to-high 40s°C. Madrid empties out in August , as locals go on summer holidays and many establishments close to avoid the oppressive heat. These summer months are ideal for visiting the northern regions , such as Asturias , País Vasco (Basque Country), Galicia and Cantabria , which have milder temperatures.

May to September is the best time to hit the beach

Spain is blessed with nearly 5000km (3107 miles) of coastline, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Archipelagos in the Balearic Sea and off the northwestern African coast cap off the country’s maritime allure.

When the weather starts warming up in the wake of spring, Spanish beach destinations come to life, hitting their peak in August. Ibiza reaches its peak party atmosphere in July and August, when top DJs fly in to play in its world-famous clubs. If you wish to avoid crowded shorelines, opt for going in May and June.

April to May and September to October are the best times to walk the Camino de Santiago

The popular period for walking this thousand-year-old pilgrimage route towards Santiago de Compostela is between May and September, for favorable weather and longer daylight hours. To avoid those busy months, opt for the spring and autumn shoulder seasons when trails are less crowded, offering a more tranquil and introspective experience.

September to October is the best time for enjoying wine-harvest festivals

Oenophiles will particularly enjoy visiting Spain’s most famous wine-making regions, such as La Rioja and Ribera del Duero , during the traditional harvest season that starts in September. Logroño, the capital of La Rioja, kicks off its San Mateo festival, where you can take part in grape-crushing activities, parades and, of course, exquisite wine tasting for astoundingly low prices per copa .

For an off-the-tourist-radar experience, visit Valdepeñas in the Castilla-La Mancha region on the first week of September, when the entire town takes its love of vino to a whole new level with the annual harvest festival, featuring a wine tunnel and wine-tasting events in subterranean bodegas (wineries). There’s even a wine bus to take you home after a whole day of Dionysus worship.

November to February is the best time for budget travelers

Spain’s winter season attracts fewer tourists, so prices are generally lower on accommodations and flights. Winter can actually be a great time to bundle up and visit Madrid and Barcelona , which come alive with Christmas lights, outdoor markets and holiday festivities.

November to January is the best time to indulge in olive-oil festivals

The annual olive harvest season is celebrated with olive-oil festivals all over the country, especially in the regions of Andalucía and Catalonia. Check out the gastronomic agenda for the Martos Olive Festival in the city of Jaen, which takes place annually on December 8, while the Siurana Olive Oil Fair happens every November.

January to February and July to August are the best times for sales shopping

Usually held after Christmas and the during summer holidays, when people have time to shop, the traditional rebajas (sales) periods in Spain is regulated by the Spanish government to protect consumers and local businesses. During these winter and summer sales seasons, bargain hunters can stretch their shopping budget, as stores use this time to clear their inventory and offer significant discounts reaching up to 70% off.

January to April is best time to try calçots

La Calçotada is a yearly gastronomic festival in the Catalonian region , where large groups gather to eat grilled calçots – a type of green onion harvested in the winter – dipped in delectable sauces.

January to March are the best times for skiing

Ski resorts usually open in December and close right after Easter in April. Peak snow conditions run from January to March in the Pyrenees and January to February in Central Spain. In southern Spain near Granada, the Sierra Nevada has a surprisingly longer ski season that can sometimes last until May.

The Alan S. Becker and Gary A. Poliakoff Preeminent Leaders in Law Speaker Series

The Alan S. Becker and Gary A. Poliakoff Preeminent Leaders in Law Speaker Series

By Catharine Skipp [email protected] 09-27-2024

Few legal education and practice initiatives shine as brightly as the Alan S. Becker and Gary A. Poliakoff Preeminent Leaders in Law Speaker Series . The upcoming lecture, "Lawyering and Diplomacy: Observations from the Field," with Julissa Reynoso, promises an engaging and insightful exploration of the intersection between legal practice and international diplomacy.

The 12th Annual Louis Henkin Lecture on Human Rights is a testament to the series' commitment to addressing pivotal issues in law and society. The lecture series is named in honor of the late Louis Henkin, a luminary in human rights law. Henkin's work at Columbia University laid the groundwork for the academic study of human rights, inspiring generations of lawyers, scholars, and activists. The creation of this lecture series by Dean Emerita Patricia White in 2011 further cements the law school's dedication to exploring and advancing human rights.

Reynoso brings a wealth of experience, having served as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra, the first woman to hold this position. Her tenure as ambassador witnessed significant achievements in fostering economic relations and investment between Spain and the United States, alongside pivotal moments such as Spain hosting the 2022 NATO Summit and presiding over the Council of the European Union.

Her career also includes serving as assistant to President Joe Biden and chief of staff to Dr. Jill Biden, where she played a crucial role in managing a broad array of domestic and international issues. Notably, she co-chaired the Gender Policy Council, focusing on advancing gender equity and equality within the Executive Office of the President. Her prior roles as the U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs further underscore her expertise and commitment to shaping U.S. foreign policy and promoting the rule of law.

The series, established by the law firm Becker & Poliakoff, pays homage to its founding members, Alan S. Becker, J.D. '69, and Gary A. Poliakoff, J.D. '69. Their exemplary careers and contributions have left an indelible mark on the legal community.

The Wednesday, October 16, 2024, lecture will begin at 6 p.m. with a preceding reception at 5 p.m. at the Storer Auditorium , 5250 University Drive, Coral Gables, Florida, 33146. The event is free and open to the public with registration , inviting a broad audience to engage with the insights and experiences of a distinguished leader in law and diplomacy.

The speaker series is a vital platform for discourse and learning in the legal community. Through such initiatives, the University of Miami School of Law continues to contribute to the development of legal scholarship and practice, preparing the next generation of lawyers, diplomats, and leaders to navigate the complexities of our global society.
