Welcome to the most delicious food tour in Medellin.

In our food tour we try the most common street food and beloved local delicacies eaten almost daily by the people of Medellin, as well as exotic fruit juices and typical meals from our region.

We have planned this tour so thoroughly that you will have an opportunity to try most of what local cuisine has to offer,  without having indigestion.

This tour is not provided on Saturdays.

Not recommended for vegans or vegetarians.

Food Tour in Medellin Description:

After we have picked you up at your hotel/building we are heading south of Medellin.

In this beautiful colorful and colonial city we visit different food stands just to pick the best ones to try out.

food tour in medellin

Our first snack is the Chocolo Arepa.

Arepas have always been part of our cuisine since the 1800´s, however, different variations have been created in the last century.

We are going to try the Chocolo type, which is a different type than the white Arepa that you probably tried already.

Chocolo Arepa is sweeter and has a different taste compared to the regular one, also more difficult to find in supermarkets.

medellin colombia food tour

Some of our guests find the Chocolo Arepa similar to the Pancake, let's see what you think when you try it.

Our second snack is a buñuelo:  A fried dough ball.

This snack is popular in many other countries but all of them have their own version of it.

Our Buñuelo is made with cheese and the surface is usually crunchy, very common throughout the year but specially on christmas.

The place where we are going to try our Buñuelo is very traditional and makes huge buñuelos.

Read more about the place and buñuelo here .

Food Tour in Medellin

Let's spice the things up a bit!!

What kind of food tour in Medellin would be this one if you don't get to try what we drink at parties and celebrations?

Our next stop will be to try a sip of Aguardiente our traditional alcohol made from anise seeds.

Since colonial times the Aguardiente has been part of our tradition and celebrations.

Medellin’s own “Aguardiente Antioqueño” has won several awards thanks to its quality and taste, that’s why we feel confident that you are going to like it.

To make this drinking experience even more exciting you will try it in a place full of customary taverns in Medellin, where the Aguardiente has been traditionally drunk: Fondas Paisas .

medellin colombia food tour

To help wash down the Aguardiente we will have our next snack: Empanada.

Empanadas are a mold of pastry filled with potatoes or rice and ground meat, usually fried.

We normally eat them with “salsa rosada” (pink sauce, a combination between mayonnaise and ketchup) or “ají”, a local spicy sauce.

After the empanada we are going to try a very particular piece of meat (we won´t tell you what it is until after you have tried it) but here is a clue: has its roots in Argentina but with a different name.

However, people think that is an acquired taste, let's see what you think when you try it!!

Delicious Home-made last meal with a local family

Our final destination is one of the most magical places in this city.

It's a coffee farm owned by the most gracious and kindest farmers where we are going to try authentic and mind-blowing home made food.

Most of this food is colombian recipies therefore you don't find it in regular restaurants.

food tour in Medellin

All this meat comes with patacones, white arepa and hogao (a sauce made with onions and tomatoes).

At this farm we won’t only going to try these delicious treats but we will also get to try a local specialty: Colombian beer mixed with a soda drink called “Colombiana”, what’s more local than that?

food tour in medellin

Locals call it Refajo and it's totally worth the shot as it is refreshing and not as bitter as a regular beer.

After this delicious food experience we head back in our comfortable SUV to your hotel with our full stomachs and the satisfaction of knowing that you are not missing any typical food from our region.

A fried dough ball in one of the most traditional buñuelos place in the whole city

Made of fermented sugar cane with aniseed and we have it in a very special place

These bite-sized snacks are typically stuffed with minced beef and cubed potatoes and encased in a cornmeal doughy bread, these are very popular but we consider these ones the best we have tried in Medellin

A slightly spicy sausage that tastes amazing.

To end this amazing food tour in Medellin we leave the town with all its colors and people we take the car again and drive less than 10 minutes to go to a very quiet place with a beautiful view, where you will be welcome and served by the family. Once in their farm you try our refajo (like a beer cocktail), the main meal of the night and then a very traditional colombian dessert with a coffee tea to help you diggest all this food.

Eating My Way Across MedellĂn on a Food Tour

Bocadillo. Lechona. Refajo. SalpicĂłn. Never heard any of these terms? Neither had I until I went on a MedellĂn local food tour to discover what to eat and drink in Colombia.

When traveling to a new country, I try to do some research on the local cuisine beforehand and always seek out recommendations from locals upon arrival. Trying out traditional foods from authentic places recommended by the local people is a great way to experience the true flavor of a place. In addition, you can learn a lot about the history, culture, and traditions that shaped the gastronomy of a region while getting satiated.

Related: Comprehensive Guide to Medellín’s Free Walking Tour

After going on the MedellĂn Free Walking Tour with Real City Tours , I decided to try out their Local Food Tour . This 3-hour tour takes place in the upper-middle-class neighborhood of Laureles. I had been wanting to check out this neighborhood anyway, so the Local Food Tour seemed like the perfect excuse!

Table of Contents

Stop 1: Mango Biche

I met up with our tour guide, Diana, and the rest of the group at the Estadio Metro Station. From there, we walked just a few yards away to the first stop on our gastronomic adventure — a street cart selling sliced mango. Diana explained that a good portion of the population of MedellĂn makes a living by selling items on the street. This particular vendor has been able to put her children through high school and university by selling mango biche , which is green mango slices with a squeeze of lemon and a dash of salt.

Stop 2: Aguardiente (Guaro)

We also sampled a shot of Colombia’s most beloved alcoholic drink, Aguardiente , or guaro for short. This distilled liquor literally translates to “firewater” and definitely has an acquired taste (it tastes like black licorice). So the salty-sweet mango biche served as a great chaser for us newbies!

Related: Colombian Aguardiente: 9 Surprising Facts About this Infamous Liquor

Stop 3: Bocadillo

We walked a bit through the neighborhood streets of Laureles, stopping outside one house in particular. Here, Diana pointed out the plantain, papaya, and mango trees growing in the small front yard, as well as coffee and cacao plants growing nearby. During this stop, Diana pulled a few small rectangular packages out of her bag. The packaging turned out to be a plantain leaf and inside was a bocadillo — a candy much like a gummy drop made from just guava paste and panela (sugar cane syrup).

Stop 4: Empanadas & Buñuelos

Our next stop was at a local fast-food type of restaurant. We sat at a table outside on the sidewalk and sampled two of Colombia’s most well-known street foods — empanadas and buñuelos. Colombian empanadas are made with cornflour and are fried, not baked like empanadas in other regions of Latin America. They are most commonly filled with a beef and potato mixture, but you can also find chicken or vegetarian versions. Buñuelos are addictive little balls of fried deliciousness. They are made from a mix of cornmeal and cheese and taste like a savory doughnut hole.

Stop 5: Refajo, Patacones, and Lechona

We were already getting pretty full and we hadn’t even reached the midway point in the tour yet! Next, we stopped at a local favorite, Doña Lechona. The cartoon pig in the logo made me think this was a chain restaurant but Diana explained that it is actually a family-run establishment.

Here we sampled a few different Colombian specialties. First was a refajo , which is a refreshing drink made by mixing La Colombiana (a soda that is similar to orange Fanta) with Aguila , a light Colombian beer. It tasted better than it sounds!

The second dish we had here were patacĂłnes . These are plantain slices that have been fried not once, but twice. Colombians REALLY like their fried food! The patacĂłnes were served with guacamole and another sauce called hogao , which is a sweet mixture of tomato and onion.

The last dish was lechona , the restaurant’s namesake, and the main course on the food tour. Lechona is made by slow-roasting an entire pig for about 10 hours. The tender meat is then served with a mixture of rice and lentils or peas that have been cooked inside the pig. It was kind of like Colombia’s version of paella. Vegetarians beware — each plate is served with a (yummy) piece of crunchy pig skin on top!

Stop 6: Hand-Roasted Coffee

After the main course, we lightened things up a bit and stopped at a local coffee roastery . Here we were shown the different steps that go into preparing coffee beans for roasting and how they roast the coffee manually in a small roaster. And, of course, we got to sample the coffee as well!

Stop 7: SalpicĂłn

The last stop of the tour was of course for dessert! Here we tried the Colombian specialty called salpicĂłn . This sweet dish is made with vanilla ice cream, topped with fruit salad mixed in cream, and…CHEESE! I have to admit that this combination didn’t work for me but to each their own!

The Medellín Local Food Tour with Real City Tours was a great introduction to some of the traditional food and drink that shouldn’t be missed when visiting Colombia!

Which stop looks most appetizing to you?!

Laureles neighborhood Background And Highlights

medellin colombia food tour

The Laureles neighborhood, initially called “The Employee’s City” was built by the Employees’ Cooperative for the working class; its initial layout was designed by Pedro Nel GĂłmez in 1943, who took the streets of Paris as a model with its parks, traffic circles, circular and diagonal avenues.

Laureles: A place to Eat, Drink & Dance!

If any area in the city has gained popularity in the city, especially due to its growing gastronomic offer, this is Laureles, a place full of tourist corridors, bars, and restaurants of all kinds. Walk through its streets with lots of trees and a delightful breeze. Keep in mind that Laureles is considered one of the most traditional neighborhoods in western Medellin, where you can still appreciate the architecture of the 1950’s in one-story houses with several rooms, patios, and gardens.

These houses coexist with cafes, bars, markets, and restaurants of all kinds that have notably diversified the gastronomic and nightlife offerings in this sector of the city.

Every country has its own version of street food, and Colombia is no different. Medellin is a large city and has a wide variety of street foods to choose from.

However, it can be hard to know where to go and what to order as a tourist. That’s where a street food tour comes in.

This article will not only give you a play-by-play of what to expect on the best street food tour in Medellin but will also have your tummy grumbling by the end. So, shall we get to it?

Guilty Pleasures Food Club in Medellin

medellin colombia food tour

Tours, in general, are a great way to indulge in a city’s history, food scene, and nightlife all in one go.

What’s even better is that you get to do all of those things on a street food tour while walking around the city and stuffing your face.

A local company runs the Guilty Pleasures Food Club in Medellin with the goal of showing visitors the best that the city has to offer, all while sampling some of the most delicious food.

The tour starts off in El Centro, the historic center of Medellin.

Your guide will give you a quick rundown of the area as well as some tips on how to order street food like a pro.

From there, the guide takes you to Ayacucho, one of the oldest and most important streets in the paisa culture.

If you book the tour during the week, you might get lucky and have a small group. This is nice because you get more one-on-one time with your guide.

Depending on the size of your group and how fast everyone walks, the tour lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours.

During that time, you will walk a lot which is good because you’ll have a lot of calories to burn off by the end.

The tour includes 10 different stops, each with its own unique dish. So, lets take a look at each one, so you know what to expect.

First on the list is the delicious fried donut ball known as a buñuelo.

You can find these all over Colombia, but they are especially popular in Medellin. The buñuelo is made of deep-fried dough and then covered in cheese.

The result is crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, with a hint of cheesy deliciousness that will have you hooked from the first bite.

These fried dough balls are a special treat during the month of Christmas for the Colombian people.

It didn’t take long before we had a sugary treat. Solterita’s, which translates to “young single ladies,” are sweet, crunchy orange cookies that are topped with sweet cream.

Ours were made into a cookie sandwich, and, let me tell you; they were heavenly.

The perfect mix of sweet and crunchy, with a soft cream filling that was to die for. These cookies are so good that it is hard to eat just one.

However, they’re a mess so ask for a spoon if you want to avoid getting cream all over your hands.

Empanadas don’t really need an introduction, but just in case you are not familiar, they are a turnover that is typically filled with meat, cheese, or both.

The pastry is then fried or baked and can be served as a snack or a meal. Empanadas are great for a quick on-the-go snack, and ours were no different.

The inside was filled with ground beef and peppers, and the dough was nice and flaky—the perfect little package of deliciousness.

Arepa Boyacense

medellin colombia food tour

I didn’t realize there were so many varieties of arepas until I came to Colombia. I guess there is an ongoing debate on whether Venezuela or Colombia has the best arepas.

The Arepa Boyacense is a Colombian-style arepa that’s made of cornmeal and is typically filled with cheese. Don’t forget to add a guayaba sauce for a sweet and savory combination.

This particular arepa was on the smaller side, but it was packed with flavor. The cornmeal dough was soft and chewy, and the cheese was gooey and delicious.

The guava sauce added a nice sweetness to the dish that brought all the flavors together perfectly.

Butifarra took me back to my home country because they remind me of little smokies. They are sausages that are made of pork and spices and then grilled.

They are perfect for a night out on the town after having a few cervezas. The vendors will have an array of sauces for you to choose from, but I recommend the aji or barbeque.

Arepa de Chocolo

medellin colombia food tour

Time for another arepa but this time, it is the Arepa de Chocolo. These arepas, to me, look like a pancake made of cornmeal.

The crazy part is that this pancake-looking arepa is then topped with a slab of white cheese. Your tastebuds will be going on a wild ride with this one.

This is a filling stop, so it is worth sharing if you are with someone.

Refajo (Cola y Pola)

medellin colombia food tour

Ever had a beer mixed with an orange soda? Well, that is exactly what Refajo is, a beer mixed with a pop that tastes like an orange Fanta.

The drink was introduced in 1993 by the Bavaria Brewery and is said to be a champagne soda with a beer twist.

Don’t worry; the drink is only 2% alcohol, so you can enjoy a few without getting too buzzed. It’s quite refreshing and would go well with any of the above-mentioned dishes.

Passion Fruit & Chocolat Gelato

medellin colombia food tour

Next, our tour guide took us to an award-winning gelato spot. Amor-Acuyá won the best gelato in the America’s in 2016.

They had a wide variety of flavors to choose from, but we had to have the winning flavor, passion fruit & chocolate.

The passion fruit was tart, and the chocolate was rich and creamy. They were a perfect match and left us wanting more.

Amor-Acuyá also has other unique flavors, and there is something for everyone.

Chunchurria

medellin colombia food tour

The last food stop on the tour was chunchurria. What is chunchurria, you ask? Well, it’s fried or grilled pig, lamb, or cow intestines.

I know that may not sound appetizing, but it is actually quite tasty. The intestines are marinated in a variety of spices and then fried or grilled.

They can be served with a dipping sauce and are another snack to grab while you are out on the town.

If you didn’t know what it is, you would never guess that it is intestines. They have a slightly chewy texture, but they’re delicious other than that.

Aguardiente

medellin colombia food tour

We stopped at a local aguardiente spot to wash the intestines out of our mouths. Aguardiente is a sugarcane-based liquor that is popular in Colombia.

It is made by fermenting and distilling sugarcane juice. The alcohol content can range from 20% to 60% and is usually consumed only as a shot.

Our tour guide made it clear that is uncommon to make a cocktail with aguardiente. As to why is unclear, so just do what the locals do and take a shot.

medellin colombia food tour

To finish the night off, we took a ride on the Metrocable. The metrocable is a cable car system that was built to help locals get around the city.

It is inexpensive and efficient and gives you a birds-eye view of the city. This was an excellent way to end the tour and see MedellĂn from a different perspective.

Is the Tour Worth It?

I would say yes, the tour is definitely worth it. It’s a great way to see the city and try new foods.

Our tour guide was excellent and extremely knowledgeable about the city and its history . He was born and raised in MedellĂn, and his love for the city was evident.

He made sure to answer all of our questions and give us suggestions on other places to check out during our stay.

The tour itself was great, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting MedellĂn. It’s a great way to see the city and try some of the local food.

Bite Into History in Medellin

Food tours are a great way to get to know a city and its culture. They’re also a great way to try new foods that you may not be familiar with.

So, what are you waiting for? Go on a tour and bite into history.

Top 5 traditional Colombian food dishes to try in Medellin

  • January 20, 2022
  • Laura Santaularia

Colombian Food - Casuelita

In this post, Laura will share her top 5 Colombian food dishes you must try when you’re in the Medellin. She also gives recommendations on where to try each of them.

One of the funnest parts of traveling, at least for me, is food.

No matter where I go, I love to taste my way through all of the different flavors of the local specialties and also learn about the traditions behind each one.

Food is so much more than just nourishment; it reveals so much about the history and culture of a country and its people. And often it’s not only about the dish itself, but also how, where, or when it is typically eaten.

Let’s be honest, Medellín, or Colombia in general,  is not necessarily known for its gastronomy (I mean, how many Colombian restaurants have you come across in other countries).

But that doesn’t mean you can’t still find some tasty dishes. I have chosen five traditional Colombian dishes, which I would recommend you try during your visit in Medellín. They are in decreasing order of preference, ending with my favorite.

#5 Colombian Dish: Mondongo

This is a very typical Colombian dish, especially here in the Andes, where Medellin is located. It is basically a tripe soup, with potato, pork and spices.

If intestines are not your thing or you are a picky eater when it co mes to texture, skip to the next dish. It’s one of those love-or-hate dish and even locals are divided.

But there are many who love it and I’ve even met a lot of foreigners who like it as well. In any case, I have to admit that this isn’t for everyone (including myself), but I do believe that everyone should give it a try and form your own opinion.

Mondongo - Colombian Food

If you decide to try it, here’s a key instruction. You’ll notice it comes with a side of rice, avocado and banana (yes, banana, not plantain!). These are not actually a side – what you do is mix it all into the soup.

Might sound strange, but if you want to have the full local experience, this is the way to do it.

As for where to try it, simple! There is absolutely no doubt that you should try this at a restaurant that is called Mondongo’s.  It’s been arround since 1976, so they know what they are doing.

There are several in Medellin, including in Poblado on Calle 10 and in Laureles on “la 70”.

# 4 Colombian Dish: Lechona

This traditional Colombian dish, which some argue is originally from the province of Tolima, can be loosely translated to stuffed roasted pork. What makes it special, besides its greasy deliciousness, is its presentation.

Because when I say pork, I actually mean the whole pig, well piglet. Basically, the pig is cut open, hollowed out, the meat is cut up and mixed with peas, rice and spices to make a stuffing and then the pig is sewn closed and roasted slowly, usually in a large oven.

It is especially popular for large family events, as it feeds many and is easy to share, not to mention its “festive” presentation. If you would like to try it, don’t worry – you don’t have to buy a whole pig.

There are restaurants that sell this colombian food by the portion. Make sure to try the crispy skin. It might not be the healthiest thing around, but it sure is tasty!

Lechona - Colombian Food

The name of the restaurant I recommend for this dish is Doña Lechona (again, quite easy to remember!). It has also been around for more than 30 years.

It is located in Laureles, close to “La 70” and to the “Primer Parque”, where there are a lot of other restaurants and bars.

#3 Colombian Dish: Tamal

If you have travelled around Latin America, you will most definitely have heard of, and most likely tried, Tamales. Each country/region has a different versions of this dish.

In Colombia alone, there are around 7 different types. The most common type, at least in Medellin, is made of seasoned corn dough filled with different vegetables and meat (chicken, pork, beef or even all three).

Tamal - Colombian Food

Once again, the presentation is key. All of this is wrapped in a big leaf, tied closed to form a parcel and then steamed/boiled. This is not only eco-friendly and practical for takeaway, but also adds an essential touch of flavor.

My favorite place for Tamales is called Tamales Exquisitos , and you probably won’t be surprise to know: They have been around for decades! They have two locations, one by Oviedo shopping mall in Poblado and another in Envigado. I usually get them to takeaway, but they also have a few tables in case you want to eat in.

#2 Colombian Dish:  Bandeja Paisa

This is the mother of all local dishes of this region. The name says it all. Bandeja means tray and Paisa refers to the cultural region of which Medellin is the capital.

Paisas, being as proud as they are, even claim it to be the queen of all Colombian Food! Although I like it, I don’t know whether I would go that far.

What’s in it? Fried pork belly, fried blood sausage, fried chorizo (sausage), minced meat, rice, beans, a fried egg, fried plantain, avocado, a small corn arepa and – if you’re lucky – a spoonful of salad.

Colombian Food - Bandeja Paisa

And it’s as big as it sounds. So, if you plan on trying it, either make sure you’re very hungry or split it with someone.

You might need to go on an intense detox afterward, but unless you’re vegetarian/vegan or suffer from heart disease, I would definitely say you should try it at least once during your stay.

My favorite place to eat Bandeja Paisa is called El Rancherito . They have several restaurants, including one very close to the main airport ( click here to see how to go between Medellin and the Airport ), but the easiest to get to is inside of “ Mercado del Rio ” close to the Modern Art Museum (MAMM).

#1 – Colombian Dish:  Sancocho

And this brings me to my favorite dish! Sancocho is basically a soup. There are different types and what changes is the protein.

You can get sancocho de gallina/pollo (hen/chicken), sancocho de res (beef), sancocho de pescado (fish) and my favorite of favorites: sancocho trifásico (chicken, beef and pork).

The other ingredients are generally always the same: potato, sweet corn on the cob, yuca (manioc), plantain, fresh coriander and a side of rice, avocado and salad.

Colombian Food - Sanchoco

This is comfort food in its best form. And not quite as heavy as most of the other options on traditional local menus. However, be warned that portions still tend to be quite big, so if you’re not very hungry or are not a big eater, make sure to share with someone.

For beef/chicken sancocho, my favorite place is a place called El Viejo John in Sabaneta. It appears on Google as Old John (no joke!). For fish sancocho, I recommend going to Minorista market to a place called La Esquina de la Ricura .

The restaurant is very basic (let’s just say, it’s not the place you would go for a romantic date), but the food is the real deal; make sure to order “Sancocho de Bagre”.

So, there they are! My top 5 favorite traditional Colombian food dishes. I’d like to apologize to all vegetarians/vegans at this point, although I doubt they would have read up to this point.

Although Colombia is extremely biodiverse when it comes to fruits and vegetables, the cuisine is very meat-heavy.
