Maharashtra

India’s third-largest and second-most populous state, Maharashtra is an expansive canvas showcasing many of India’s iconic attractions. There are palm-fringed beaches; lofty, cool-green mountains; Unesco World Heritage Sites; and bustling cosmopolitan cities (and gorgeous vineyards in which to escape them). In the far east of the state are some of the nation’s most impressive national parks, including Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve.

maharashtra tourism

State Tourism Website : https://www.maharashtratourism.gov.in/

The spirit of Maharashtra is cosmopolitan, forward-thinking, tolerant and vibrant. There is enough to keep connoisseurs of temples, forts, old monuments and art---gainfully preoccupied here. Forts have played a vital role in the history of the state, given the rocky terrain of the Sahyadris.  Each fort marks a military triumph, and each tells a story of strategy, warfare, intrigue and planning. All of them reconstruct the tale of an enterprising leader , Chhatrapati Shivaji- in the Deccan arena, who with fortitude went onto become one of the tallest kings of Indian history. Bombay or Mumbai—the capital of Maharashtra is not only seen as the financial capital of India, but is literally the Gateway of India which is secular, progressive yet rooted. It is also home to the largest film industry in the world, an industry whose turnover is more than that of the GDP of several small nations. The film industry in Mumbai sees thousands thronging to the city every year, hoping to make it big. Maharashtra is home to several National Parks. Project Tiger has 4 major areas of concentration in the state namely Tadoba-Andhari, Melghat, Sahyadri and Pench. A large percentage of Maharashtra's forests and wildlife lie along the Western Ghats or Western Maharashtra and eastern Vidarbha. The Sahyadris hold several beautiful hill stations in their lap, which are cool, beautiful and refreshingly serene. Best of all, they are usually near a city. The experience of Maharashtra is diverse and rich with colourful cultures, woven into one gigantic quilt. The festivals here galvanise the sleepy thousands into fervent motion. The traveller will definitely fall in love with the miles of silver, white beaches, stretched throughout the Western coast.

Welcome aboard a travel experience that gives you a glimpse into this vibrant and beautiful land.

Welcome to Maharashtra. A land untouched, unsullied, unlimited.

Interesting Facts about Maharashtra

1) Torna Fort : In 1646, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, at the age of 16, captured his first fort called Torna Fort known as Prachandagad - a large fort located in Pune which was the first pillar of the Maratha Empire.

2) Pawan Khind: The Ghodkhind pass was subsequently named Pavan Khind by Shivaji, in honour of the sacrifice by Baji Prabhu Deshpande and his art of using a weapon called "Dand Patta"

3) Pratapgad Hills : Shivaji Maharaj's face-off with Afzal Khan is a legendary encounter at the foot of the Pratapgad. Shivaji Maharaj suspected foul play, so he wore body armour under his cloak, and hid a tiger’s claw (Bagh Nakh) in his left sleeve. This was a huge win for the Maratha.

Get in [ edit ]

maharashtra tourism

All the cities of Maharastra all well connected by rail, air and road.

By plane [ edit ]

Maharashtra has the following important airports:

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport , Mumbai ( BOM  IATA ): The main air hub of the state and the country. It has excellent service to all major cities of the world as well as most Indian cities. International non-stop flights are available from London, Paris, Frankfurt, Seoul, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Atlanta and other cities. Domestic flights connect to Delhi, Bangalore, Goa, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Nagpur and many other cities in India.
  • Pune International Airport (Lohagao Airport), Pune ( PNQ  IATA ): Connected mainly to other Indian airports (Delhi, Goa, Bangalore).
  • Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur ( NAG  IATA ): Well connected to other Indian cities. Some international flights are available.

There are other, smaller airports in the cities of Aurangabad, Nashik, Kolhapur, Nanded and Shirdi. Except for Aurangabad Airport ( IXU  IATA ), which has regular flights scheduled, other airports have only occasional flights. If you do intend to fly to these cities anyway, make sure you have good knowledge of your flight details because flights are rare. It is much easier to reach these cities by road or railway.

By train [ edit ]

Maharashtra is also well connected with other parts of India by rail. Maharashtra is served by Western Railway (WR), Central Railway (CR), Konkan Railway (KR) and South East Central Railway (SECR) zones.

Rail travel is quite cheap compared to travelling by road. Trains in India, although faster than cars/buses, are quite slow due to the terrain and also due their sheer length (it is not unusual for a train to have up to 24 coaches). Travelling a distance of about 600 km takes about 10-12 hours.

Mumbai is served by both WR and CR. Trains to Mumbai from other parts of India are abundant and you should have no difficulty to find one which suits you if you check the Indian Railways timetable. If you intend to travel through the coastal region (Konkan) to Mumbai, it is highly recommended to take one of the several trains on the Konkan Railway line. The journey is full of beautiful scenery, from sea coasts and rivers to mighty waterfalls and green forests amidst farming villages and towns. The line also has the highest railway viaduct in Asia and the longest railway tunnel in India. Unless you take the Vande Bharat Express along the way, the journey from Madgaon in Goa to Mumbai CSMT takes about 12 hours. However, do not make this journey during the monsoons (June–September) as landslides are frequent and the railway tracks frequently sink in the soft, wet ground.

Pune is an important railway junction on the Central Railways and receives trains from all parts of India. It is also an important terminus for trains leaving to many cities.

Nagpur is another important junction of both CR and SECR. Being close to the geographical centre of India, trains travelling north–south as well as east–west pass through Nagpur and stop there. Therefore, Nagpur is pretty much reachable directly by train from most of the major cities of India.

Most other major cities in Maharashtra also have direct rail connectivity with other parts of India, but trains may be fewer in number. An alternative is to change trains from one of the major junctions/termini in Maharashtra, from where there are many trains to other parts of Maharashtra. Major railway junctions are Manmad, Bhusawal, Wardha, Purna and Kurduvadi, apart from the cities mentioned above.

By car [ edit ]

Seven national highways connect Maharashtra to other parts of India.

  • NH 48 connects Delhi and Chennai. Passes through Mumbai, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur.
  • NH 53 connects Hajira (Gujarat) and Paradeep (Odisha). Passes through Dhule, Jalgaon, Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Bhandara.
  • NH 44 connects Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) and Kanniyakumari (Tamil Nadu). Passes through Nagpur.
  • NH 65 connects Pune and Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh). Passes through Solapur.
  • NH 50 connects Solapur and Mangalore (Karnataka).
  • NH 63 connects Nizamabad (Telangana) and Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh). A tiny length passes through Sironcha on the eastern tip of Maharashtra.
  • NH 66 connects Panvel and Kanniyakumari. Passes through Mahad, Chiplun, Sawantwadi.

There are numerous other roads but the national highways are the best maintained of all. Some highways may require you to pay tolls at the state border. Many highways have a police checkpost at the state border, although they will not stop you if you don't arouse their suspicions.

By bus [ edit ]

Bus services are provided by state transport corporations as well as by private bus companies.

Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation ( MSRTC [dead link] ) runs a comprehensive network of buses, popularly known as ST buses, within and outside the state. There are 3 classes of buses. The commonly seen red buses are inexpensive, non-AC buses intended for cheap travel. They run between various cities in Maharashtra and adjacent states. Particularly, they connect all the capitals of adjacent states ( Gandhinagar / Ahmadabad , Bhopal , Raipur , Hyderabad , Bangalore , Panaji ) to at least one city in Maharashtra. But these buses are not very comfortable, especially for long-distance travel as they stop at many villages en route. Another class is of semi-luxury, non-AC buses having separate cushioned seats per passenger. These are popularly known as 'Asiad' buses and have a green or purple top.

The new fleet of luxury buses (Shivneri and Ashwamedh) provide more comfortable, air-conditioned travel at slightly higher prices, although the price is lesser compared to private buses. Look for blue coloured (Shivneri) or orange-brown coloured (Ashwamedh) buses bearing the MSRTC logo. (Some buses may have 'M.S.R.T.C.' written on the front windshield.) Typically, semi-luxury and luxury buses will stop only at a few places indicated on the route information in the front.

Tickets can be purchased on boarding the bus, but it is more convenient to reserve a ticket in advance (at a bus depot, authorised agent or online) to save the trouble of finding a seat for yourself.

The state owned bus companies of some adjacent states ( GSRTC , MPSRTC, APSRTC , KSRTC, KTC) also provide similar types of bus services to Maharashtra.

Many private buses also ply between major cities of Maharashtra and adjacent states. The service offered is quite similar to state-owned semi-luxury and luxury buses, but at higher (typically about double, or more during tourist season) prices. Seats in such buses can be booked from one of the numerous bus agents like Redbus , Abhibus , and MyTicketBuddy [dead link] that run small agencies in any medium-sized (or larger) city.

Get around [ edit ]

See [ edit ], beach resorts [ edit ].

Coastal Maharashtra (Konkan) has some of very beautiful beaches. With a 720 km coast line, there are beautiful beach destinations almost every 50-100 km, starting from Dahanu in the Northern part of the State to Sindhudurg, at the Southern tip.

Some popular beaches are:

  • Girgaon Beach (Chowpaty)
  • Nagaon, Alibaug
  • Murud-Janjira
  • Harihareshwar
  • Ganpatipule
  • Devgad beach
  • Taramumbari
  • kunkeshwar beach
  • Pirvadi Beach (Uran)

While the beaches in Bordi, Gorai, Juhu, Alibag, Kashid and Murud-Janjira are well-developed, with multiple accommodation choices, the rest remain still off the tourist circuit. The primary reason is lack of good accommodation choices. At most of the other beaches, the only decent stay options are properties owne and managed by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), a govt. organisation. These MTDC resorts have amazing location with great views, but being govt. run, these are not among the best in service, activities and food.

Hill Stations [ edit ]

Popular hill stations in Maharashtra are -

  • Mahabaleshwar
  • Chikhaldara
  • Bhandardara

Other sites [ edit ]

  • National Parks at Mumbai
  • Meteor Crater at Lonar
  • Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai
  • Astavinayak yatra
  • Windmills at Chalalewadi

Do [ edit ]

  • River rafting, mountain biking and kayaking at Kolad

Trek the Sahyadri [ edit ]

The Sahyadri range of mountains is an impressive hill range in the western parts of Maharastra running north to south. There are many peaks in these ranges with medium height, highest being 'kalsubai' peak. Many of the hills have been converted into Forts by Chatrpati Shivaji and later Maratha rulers, some forts are even older. Many of the forts are in ruins, but still there is a lot to see and experience. Every fort has its own importance and interesting bravery stories of Shivaji and his soldiers (मावळे). Hence trekking the forts and hills in the sahyadri's has a charm of its own. Especially in the monsoons, its a place to die for, with lush greenery and pure waterfalls abundant in the hills. The treks range from very simple to absolutely tough. These western ghats are accessible from major cities like Mumbai, Pune and Nashik.

Its so common that sometimes arranged marriage itself is referred colloquially as "kanda-pohay". Other variants on the recipe are batata pohe (where diced potatoes are used instead of onion shreds). Other famous recipes made with Pohe (flattened rice) are dadpe pohe, a mixture of raw Pohe with shredded fresh coconut, green chillies, ginger and lemon juice; and kachche pohe, raw pohe with minimal embellishments of oil, red chili powder, salt and unsauteed onion shreds.

Some water and green peas are added and boiled till the peas are cooked and have absorbed the taste of all the condiments.
  • Misal Pav :Quintessentially from Kolhapur. This is made from a mix of curried sprouted lentils, topped with batata-bhaji, pohay, Chivda, farsaan, raw chopped onions and tomato. Also some times eaten with yogurt. Bread is a must.

Pav bhaji: This speciality dish from lanes of Mumbai has mashed steamed mixed vegetables (mainly potatoes, peas, tomatoes, onions and green pepper) cooked in spices and table butter. A meal containing puran poli is considered "heavy" by Marathi people.
  • Gulachi Poli  : Made specially on Makar Sankranti in typical Brahmin households, the Gulachi poli is a heavy meal similar to the Puran Poli. It is made with a stuffing of soft/shredded Jaggery mixed with toasted, ground Til (white sesame seeds) and some gram flour which has been toasted to golden in plenty of pure Ghee. The dish is made like a paratha i.e. the stuffed roti is fried on Pure ghee till crisp on both side. Tastes heavenly when eaten slightly warm with loads of ghee.

When meeting a Marathi person, greet them with the words "Jay Maharashtra!" This little gesture of friendliness will mean a lot. When at a shop, greet the shopkeeper by saying "Jay Bhavani jay Shivaji!" This directly appeals to the Maratha nationalist feelings deep in the heart of every Marathi. They will welcome you as one of their own, and you may also get extra discount.

9 Top Maharashtra Tourist Destinations and Attractions

What to See and Do in Maharashtra

maharashtra tourism

These top Maharashtra tourist places offer a diverse mix of ancient cave temples, forts, mountains, wineries, and beaches. Of course, there's cosmopolitan Mumbai as well.

Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra, is the financial capital of India and the home of India's Bollywood film industry. Also called India's "maximum city", Mumbai is known for its extreme standards of living, fast-paced lifestyle, and the making (or breaking) of dreams. Captivating examples of colonial British architecture can be found all over the city and make up many of Mumbai's top attractions , including the Gateway of India and Haji Ali. Mumbai also has a pulsating nightlife, with unforgettable bars , live music venues, national park , and traveler hangouts.

Ajanta and Ellora Caves

TripSavvy / Anna Haines

The Ajanta and Ellora Caves are located near Aurangabad in northern Maharashtra, around 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Mumbai. There are 34 caves at Ellora dating from between the 6th and 11th centuries AD, and 29 caves at Ajanta dating back to between the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD. While the Ajanta caves are rich in paintings and sculpture, the Ellora caves are renowned for their extraordinary architecture. The most incredible thing about all these caves is that they were crafted by hand, with only a hammer and chisel.

Konkan Coast

The Konkan Coast in Maharashtra offers a bounty of beautiful beaches, which are among the most pristine in the country.Delightfully off the tourist trail, they are devoid of much commercial development and many are practically deserted.

The closest hill station to Mumbai, Matheran was discovered in 1850 by the British during their occupation of India and subsequently developed into a popular summer retreat. At height of 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level, this serene place provides a cooling escape from searing temperatures. However, the most unique thing about it and what makes it so special, is that all vehicles are banned there -- even bicycles. It's a soothing place to relax away from any noise and pollution. Get there by taking the scenic toy train .

Nashik, approximately four hours northeast of Mumbai in Maharashtra, is a city of contrasts. On one hand, it's an ancient and sacred pilgrimage destination with a fascinating Old City and temples, such as Naroshankar and Kalaram. On the other, it's home to the biggest winery region in India.

Tadoba National Park

Overlooked by tourism until recently because it was off the beaten track and lacked accommodations, these days Tadoba National Park and Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra is fast gaining a reputation as one of the best places to see a tiger in the wild in India.

Just two hours southeast of Mumbai, and halfway between Mumbai and Pune, Lonavala provides an eclectic blend of hills, history and adventure. Its a popular misty monsoon destination, and its lush surroundings have been the backdrop of many Bollywood movie song and dance scenes. Attractions include forts, lookouts, lakes, dams, and waterfalls (during the monsoon season).  Nirvana Adventures conducts paragliding in Kamshet, close to Lonavala. The ancient rock-cut Karla caves are also worth visiting.

Mahabaleshwar

For fresh strawberries (as well as mulberries, raspberries, and gooseberries) head to Mahabaleshwar in the Western Ghat mountains (known as the Sahyadri mountains in Maharashtra). Strawberry season runs from November to March and you can feast on them at Mapro Gardens and Archie's Farm. Otherwise, go trekking, fishing, boating, horse riding, or take in the views at one of the many sightseeing points and lookouts (there are nearly 30 of them!).

The historical and cultural city of Kolhapur is a lesser-known tourist destination alongside the Panchganga River in southern Maharashtra. Yet, it certainly has plenty to offer! Its magnificent temples are one of the main attractions, with the Mahalaxmi Temple being the focus. The city has a long line of both Hindu and Muslim rulers, and has been the site of intense confrontations. Prior to India's Independence, from 1700 it was controlled by the Maratha Empire and the British. The new palace of the Maharaja of Kolhapur, built in 1884, has grandiose Indo-Saracenic architecture. It now houses the Shree Chhatrapati Shahu Museum, containing memorabilia of Kolhapur's rulers. Kolhapur also has a couple of interesting claims to fame: the famous Kolhapuri chappals (shoes) originated from there and the city is said to produce the best Kushti wrestlers.

History of Maharashtra | Maharashtra Tourism

History of Maharashtra | Maharashtra Tourism

Archeological evidence indicates that this region was inhabited as early as the Chalcolithic period. The area was ruled by many dynasties including the Mauryas, Chalukyas, and Cholas before the Marathas from whom the state got its name. After the third Anglo-Maratha War, control over the region was passed into the hands of the British. While portions of Maharashtra fell into Bombay and Central Presidencies, some areas of Marathwada became a part of Hyderabad Deccan.

After independence, the Deccan states were brought together to form the Bombay State in 1950. In 1956, following the States Reorganisation Act, parts of Marathwada from the Hyderabad State and the Vidarbha region were integrated into the Bombay State while the southern part of this area went to Mysore State. Four years later, in 1960, the Bombay State was divided along linguistic lines to form Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Geography and Climate

Maharashtra is located along the south-west coast of India. It has a long coastline on the west and shares its borders with 6 states and 1 Union territory. Maharashtra is bounded by Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in the north, Dadra and Nagar Haveli in the northwest, Telangana and Chhattisgarh in the east and Goa and Karnataka in the south. The major geographical features in the state are the Western Ghats, the Deccan Plateau, and the Konkan Coastline. A number of rivers flow through the state including the Krishna, Bhima, Tapti, and Godavari.

The state has a tropical monsoon climate with dry summers, heavy rainfall, and pleasant winters. It is better to avoid visiting Maharashtra during monsoon. The best time to visit the state is between October and February .

There is much to see and do when you are in Maharashtra. You can enjoy the Maharashtra State Tourism with the view of majestic mountain ranges that stretch into mists as long as your vision holds and beyond.

Maharashtra’s vast, beautiful, and varied land waits…. so LET’S GET RELAXED AND EXPLORE….

Information about Maharashtra

Maharashtra geography.

Bounded by Gujarat in North-West, Chattisgarh in East, Madhya Pradesh in North, Andhra Pradesh in South-east, and Goa in Southwest, Karnataka in South, and Union Territories Dadra and Nager Haveli in West along with the vast expanse of Arabian Sea beyond…..Maharashtra is uninitiated!

The shape of Maharashtra state is mostly triangular with 450 miles/725 km Western Coastline as the base and tapering interiors approximately 500 miles/800 km towards the East. A leader amidst Indian states in industrial and agricultural production, education, transport and trade Maharashtra also boast of a rich, glorious past written in tales of valour and romance.

History of Maharashtra

The Mauryans ruled the lands during third and fourth century BC and there was a great advancement in the fields of Buddhist learning and trade at this time.

After Mauryans , Satwahanas established their empire and remained in power between 230 BC and 225 AD. Vakataka and Chalukya Empires followed with Rastrakuta rulers in quick succession and all through this exchange of power, Maharashtra remained a prominent centre for art and culture.

The dawn of the 17th century saw the rise of Marathas who established the most glorious Empire, much credit to the great ruler Shivaji Maharaj who is today the part of folklore.

Culture of Maharashtra

Traditional clothes are kurta, pheta , and dhoti for men and saree-choli for women. Traditional dance forms reflect my richness and diversity one of the most interesting among them is Povda . You will be mesmerized by the performance that revolves around Shivaji Maharaj.

The most participated festival is Ganesh Chaturthi still, Holi, Diwali, Muharram, and Eid all are celebrated with equal fervour.

Cuisine of Maharashtra

Varadi cuisine belongs to the non-coastal regions –Vidarbha. In traditional preparations, vegetables have an aromatic, sedate delight whereas meat and fish are spicy, hot, and steamy. Konkani cuisine shows heavy use of various spices and coconut.

So the wait is over now, Let’s get relaxed and explore Maharashtra

Observations, spotted dove, black-rumped flameback, indian pitta, black-hooded oriole, common iora, red-whiskered bulbul, red-vented bulbul, malabar starling, vigors's sunbird, white-rumped munia, exotic species.

Exotic species flags differentiate locally introduced species from native species.

Naturalized : Exotic population is self-sustaining, breeding in the wild, persisting for many years, and not maintained through ongoing releases (including vagrants from Naturalized populations). These count in official eBird totals and, where applicable, have been accepted by regional bird records committee(s).

Provisional : Either: 1) member of exotic population that is breeding in the wild, self-propagating, and has persisted for multiple years, but not yet Naturalized; 2) rarity of uncertain provenance, with natural vagrancy or captive provenance both considered plausible. When applicable, eBird generally defers to bird records committees for records formally considered to be of "uncertain provenance". Provisional species count in official eBird totals.
