armadale travel

Centuries ago, Armadale was best known for its wild boar hunting – a pastime that attracted royals staying at Linlithgow Palace and gave the town its original name, Barbauchlaw. Today’s visitors still come to the area to enjoy the great outdoors, but these days you’ll encounter only four-legged friends on the tranquil walks around Armadale.

Armadale is a small town of around 11,000 inhabitants located in the south west of West Lothian. Originally a farming community, Sir William Honeyman bought the land in the late 18th century, renaming it Armadale after one of his Highland estates. Locals refer to it fondly as The Dale.

Natural mineral, fireclay, ironstone and limestone deposits found in the area fuelled Armadale’s expansion in the late 19th century as a mining town. Armadale was also known for its brick manufacturing. By the 1950s, Armadale enjoyed a more diverse industrial structure than many of its neighbouring towns. Today, the local economy relies heavily upon the town’s industrial estates.

Armadale is situated at the historic crossroads of what were once the main routes from Edinburgh to Glasgow and Bo’ness to Lanark. The M8 motorway is close by, and the recent opening of the Airdrie-Bathgate lines means that it now benefits from four trains an hour to and from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

What to see and do in Armadale

Stroll down Main Street to discover Armadale’s rather peculiar public house. The Goth, which opened for business in 1911 and was designed according to the Swedish Gothenburg System, to counter rising alcohol consumption. Even today The Goth’s coffee and delicious food still attract as many customers as its more typical pub beverages.

You’ll find several other pubs to choose from in the town, plus cafés and restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets. Lining the streets are a number of pretty churches – such as the Armadale Parish Church of Scotland – several florists, a jeweller and the local library. You’ll find the specialist Mill Garden Centre on the outskirts of the town.

For sporting pursuits, visit the town’s swimming pool and leisure centre . Residents and visitors alike are welcome to take the plunge or join in the host of sporting activities on offer. Armadale also boasts two busy bowling clubs and the nine-hole Bridgecastle Golf Club. Or you might prefer to catch an Armadale Thistle home game – the town’s football team regularly plays other local squads.

To enjoy one of the popular countryside walks around Armadale, head to Hardhill Wood for spectacular views over the Bathgate Hills, or go to Black Moss to amble through woodlands and by ponds. Venture a mile further and you’ll find the 169-acre Polkemmet Country Park just waiting to be explored.

Home of local motorbike heroes, The Scotwaste Monarchs, Armadale Speedway provides an adrenalin rush on Friday nights throughout the summer as visitors cheer on their favourites as they compete against teams from across the country. With no gears, brakes or rear suspension – and indeed no fear – this is a thrilling event to watch.

As with many of the towns within West Lothian, Armadale celebrates its Gala Day in June. Locals and visitors cheer on the floats and bands as they march down the High Street.

For those looking to rest their head for an evening, Tarrareoch Old Farmouse offers a warm welcome to visitors. This 300 year old farmhouse offers outstanding views across the open countryside. Other accommodation can also be found nearby in neighbouring Bathgate , offering a range of bed and breakfasts and UK renowned hotel chains.

  • 2 Get around

Sleat peninsula is the gently rolling southern part of the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Inner Hebrides . Its main villages are Armadale (Gaelic: Armadal ) around the ferry pier and Ardvasar (Gaelic: Àird a’ Bhàsair ) half a mile south. Accommodation and amenities straggle along the main road north A851, notably at Saasaig and Isleornsay; points north of there are described under Broadford .

Get in [ edit ]

Map

57.065 -5.895 1 Armadale pier is the landing point for Calmac ferries from Mallaig on the Scottish mainland. They take 45 min and sail daily, Apr-Oct every hour or two 8AM-6PM but only 2 or 3 per day Nov-March. Until end of March 2025 return fares are £23.30 per car, £7 per adult including driver, and £3.50 per child aged 5-15. This was the usual route to Skye before the bridge opened, and it's still a good route if you want to take the Road to the Isles via Glenfinnan . But don't come this way on a whim or because Satnav has misdirected you to Mallaig instead of the bridge - you could face a long wait for a ferry space if you haven't booked.

Stagecoach Bus 52 runs 3 or 4 times daily from Armadale pier (connecting with the ferries) to Broadford , Sligachan and Portree . In Broadford it connects M-F with Bus 50 to Kyleakin and Kyle of Lochalsh bus and railway stations.

By car you follow A851 the same road as the bus, joining A87 the main cross-island road at Broadford.

Get around [ edit ]

It's a short walk between the pier, the two villages and Armadale Castle, but you need wheels to get elsewhere around Sleat.

Car rental is available from Drive Skye .

See [ edit ]

  • Views from the village and pier towards the mainland are attractive.
  • 57.0185 -6.0173 3 Point of Sleat is reached by driving south to the end of the public road at Aird of Sleat, then it's a clear (though occasionally rough or boggy) 3-mile trail to the Point, crossing the beach at Camas Daraich. The lighthouse is just a small metal gantry, you come for the views towards the Small Isles (which are inhabited, and reached by ferry from Mallaig).

Do [ edit ]

armadale travel

  • Wildlife: always be looking out for it, including on the ferry.
  • South Skye Sea Kayak organise tours and tuition. They're at Kilmore 4 miles north of Armadale.
  • Gaelic culture: Sabhal Mòr Ostaig a mile north of the castle teaches degree-level courses solely in Gaelic. They have shorter courses for learners, but it's not the place for beginners. However look out for music and other events that even a Sassenach can nod along with.

Buy [ edit ]

  • Craft shops and galleries near the pier are Nigel Grounds , Under the Rowan , Maggie Zefara , Ragamuffin Store , Skyelark / Grumpy George , Julia Christie , Scouting for Buoys and Patricia Shone Ceramics . Aird Old Church Gallery is at Aird, at the end of the public road south.

Connect [ edit ]

As of June 2022, Armadale has 4G from O2 but nothing from the other carriers, and there's no signal along the road until you join A87 at Broadford. 5G has not reached Skye.

Go next [ edit ]

  • The road north leads you to Broadford . From there you could return to the mainland on A87 via Kyleakin , the Skye Bridge and Kyle of Lochalsh , or continue north to the most scenic part of Skye beyond Portree.
  • Or take the ferry to Mallaig on the mainland to reach the Small Isles , Glenfinnan and the Ardnamurchan peninsula.

The State Government has today announced regular customers of the Armadale Train Line will receive six months of free travel from the start of the closure, November 20.

Those eligible will automatically have a free travel token applied to their SmartRider from 20 November 2023 to 31 May 2024, meaning they will not need to apply or register for the new free travel entitlement.

More information on the travel scheme, including a method for passengers to see if they are eligible, will be available on the Transperth website in the lead up to the shutdown.

The free travel announcement comes as timetables for the replacement bus services are on the Transperth website, allowing passengers to start familiarising themselves with their public transport options ahead of the Armadale Line shutdown.

A combination of limited stop and all stop bus routes will give passengers options to get to the CBD and other local destinations. More than 100 additional buses will be used to help support the shutdown, while three new temporary bus interchanges are being built in Victoria Park, Cannington and Armadale.

Timetables for Australind replacement road coaches are also available, with passengers being offered a 50 per cent discount on fares during the shutdown.

The road coaches will stop at the same locations as the Australind train, with Kwinana as an additional stop on the limited stops service, allowing passengers to transfer to the Mandurah Line.

Transperth's JourneyPlanner will be updated one month before the shutdown so that passengers can plan their journey in greater detail.

This week will also see the launch of a new advertising and public awareness campaign about the upcoming closure.

Over the coming weeks, Transperth staff will begin visiting Armadale Line train stations to hand out information about the shutdown and discuss alternative travel options for impacted passengers, while TV, online, print and billboard advertisements will begin running this week.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"We acknowledge that while this project is critically important and will deliver significant long-term benefits for the community, the next 18 months will be disruptive, particularly for regular Armadale Line passengers.

"The decision to provide six months of free travel from the start of the shut is only fair given the significant disruption regular customers will face and will put up to $1300 back in the pocket for those that continue to use the replacement services daily.

"Over the coming weeks, we will be ramping up community awareness of the closure with advertising across TV, print, online and billboards, while Transperth staff will begin visiting stations to speak with impacted commuters about their new travel options during the closure.

"This is one of the biggest public transport infrastructure projects we have ever undertaken and will see the complete transformation of a 130-year-old Train Line.

"In total there will be seven new stations constructed, the removal of 13 level crossings, the extension of the line to Byford and the creation of around six-hectares of new public open space."

Armadale Line Transformation Rail improvements

Under construction.

Elevated rail, new stations, level crossing removals, the extension of the line to Byford and Perth's first east-west cross line connection are set to completely transform travel along the Armadale Line.

The 130-year-old train line is set to be transformed through three significant METRONET projects: Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal , the connection of the new Thornlie-Cockburn Link to the Mandurah and Thornlie lines, and Byford Rail Extension .

To enable work on these major projects, the Armadale and Thornlie lines are currently shut until mid-2025.

Trains continue to operate between Victoria Park and Perth stations during the shutdown (excluding the first three days), including Stadium Station on weekends, public holidays and event days.

Seven new and five enhanced bus routes will be introduced to the bus network during the shutdown to support existing timetabled services.

Visit the Transperth website for more information on affected services and enhanced bus routes.

Main Roads WA has released the new Traffic-ALT app to support commuters throughout the transformation. This can be downloaded via Google Play and the Apple App Store .

The Department of Transport in partnership with METRONET and the Public Transport Authority is collaborating with local governments and schools to deliver the Armadale Line Active Travel project. This program will provide the community with information, maps, resources and support to encourage them to walk, wheel or ride for local trips to school and for leisure during the shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

The shutdown is currently underway until mid-2025.

The upgrades being made to the Armadale Line include the removal of 13 level crossings, construction of seven new stations and the addition of 5.5 km of Perth's first elevated rail.

The extended shutdown was carefully considered along with several alternative options, including multiple temporary and shorter shutdowns over a longer period of time.

It was determined shorter shutdowns could have prolonged the project and mean more disruption than necessary to passengers and the community.

The shutdown will effectively create a ‘greenfield site’ which will allow for a more efficient construction of the elevated rail, which delivers the project in a shorter timeframe and provides a safer environment for construction workers.

Passengers are encouraged to sign up for My Alerts through My Account on the Transperth website or app.

Once the shutdown starts:

- Allow extra travel time. - If you can, travel outside of peak times. - Plan your journey on the Transperth website  or  app or call the InfoLine on 13 62 13. - Check where your closest bus stop is by following signage at stations or checking the Station Access Maps . - Download the Main Roads WA Traffic-ALT app, via Google Play or the Apple App Store . - If you require special assistance, please call 1800 800 022 at least one hour before you travel.

During the shutdown, there will be no train services between Armadale/Thornlie and Victoria Park.

Train services will continue to operate between Victoria Park and Perth stations (noting that there is a three-day full line closure at the start of the shutdown).

Seven new and five enhanced bus routes will be introduced to the bus network to support existing timetabled services.

Transperth has conducted passenger surveys which have helped shape the services that will be provided as well as provide a greater understanding of the impact to the local road network.

For more information on affected services, bus routes, and other frequently asked questions, please visit the Transperth website .

The Armadale/Thornlie Line is Transperth’s third busiest train line.

Even with a comprehensive bus network, priority bus lanes and other upgrades in place, travel times will be longer.

Main Roads WA has developed a new app know as Traffic-ALT that will support drivers during the Armadale Line Transformation.

The app is designed to run through a driver's hands-free phone or car stereo Bluetooth, and will provide audio updates on key information such as current traffic congestion, and travel times for different routes.

To download the Traffic-ALT app, visit Google Play or the Apple App Store .

From Monday, 20 November 2023 the Australind train will be replaced by road coaches, which will run twice a day in each direction.

The road coach replacements will operate between Bunbury and East Perth Terminal, and will include an all-stops and a limited-stop service.

The limited stop service will allow passengers to transfer to the Mandurah Line at Kwinana Station and connect to the Perth CBD.

More information is available on the Transwa website .

Residents who live along the Armadale and Thornlie lines may experience construction impacts as well as increased bus movements nearby.

Construction impacts may include noise, dust, vibration, increased light from temporary lighting and more heavy vehicles on local roads and near-site access points.

Specific works will be confirmed and communicated to residents ahead of time, and every effort will be made to reduce impacts to nearby residents.

Trains will continue to operate between Victoria Park and Perth stations, including Stadium Station on weekends, public holidays and event days.

Changes to suburban event bus services will be necessary. Visit the Transperth website for more information.
