What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 525 REVIEWS

Ms. Miharu was great and also our bus driver (bus #81) for driving us to our destinations safe everyday. Miharu is very knowledgeable and comical, we really enjoyed her company and knowledge.

I cannot rave enough about this tour. Miharu and Joyce (subbed for 2 days) were our top notch hard working guides. I appreciate the history and interesting side stories were communicated on the bus, so at most locations we were able to explore on our own. The hotels, meals and coach were very comfortable & enjoyable. Everything was ready and prepared when the group arrived. The itinerary is well paced and full so you get your money's worth. The sushi making, Ninja throwing and Maiko tea ceremony & performance were so much fun and a compliment to just sight seeing. This was a very memorable trip with a great group of fellow travelers. All in all, a very well organized tour and I would not hesitate to book another with AJT.

One of our many highlights from this trip was our amazing tour guide, Ito. He went above and beyond immersing us into his amazing culture and making our experience unforgettable. We learned a lot from him and really appreciated his willingness to educate. He was flexible but also very organized, he made the experience hassle free. Overall, the tour was a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you for this meaningful journey.

We had a great tour guide (Miharu). Very sweet and knowledgeable she gave us alot of history but also insight into Japanese culture. It was an amazing experience with so many different places and activities.

The best decision we made was to book a tour through AJT. Our guide, Miharu, did an excellent job and provided information and history before we arrived at each stop on our tour. She kept the itinerary focused and gave us just enough time at each location to get a taste of it. We cannot wait to return to Japan and visit some new places.

Depart London on your scheduled, overnight flight to Sapporo.

On arrival in Sapporo, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Settle in before tonight's welcome dinner in a local restaurant introduces you to Japan's famed cuisine.

Breakfast & Dinner

Travel to the port city of Otaru and stroll along the Otaru Canal, the city's central waterway. Once the lifeblood of the city, it fell into disuse when modern dock facilities were opened but now boasts a gleaming restoration, with old gas lamps lining its path. Take in the delicately blown glassware of the Kitaichi Glass Shop then continue on to the Sake Brewery for a tour through the making process and a tasting of this truly unique drink before returning to Sapporo.

Pack an overnight bag for your trip to Hakodate then, after breakfast, board an express train, travelling through the countryside to Hakodate. On arrival, cross the moats that surround the star-shaped former fort of Goryokaku and explore the tranquil green grounds. Next, travel to Mount Hakodate for a cable car ride to its summit, with each season offering a different bird's eye view of the city, from delicate cherry blossoms to ice-capped rooftops. Continue on to your hotel in Hakodate.

Catch a local train and join Hakodate's locals this morning as you browse the lively Morning Market, exploring over 280 stores hawking everything from salted squid and hairy crab - culinary specialities of the area, to souvenirs and locally crafted sake. Browse through the wares on offer then board your high-speed train to Tokyo. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Japan's dazzling capital on a local train.

Tokyo's enchanting fusion of futuristic districts, centuries-old palaces, family-run ramen booths and spotlessly clean streets, dotted with cutesy anime depictions, provides endless chances for exploration. Today's full-day city tour begins with a visit to the Meiji Jingu Shrine. Enter the sprawling complex through a towering wooden gate or 'torii' and explore the museum and inner garden. then visit the magnificent Imperial Palace, taking in its moats, gardens and the picturesque Niju Bridge. Continue to Asakusa Kannon Buddhist Temple, Tokyo's oldest temple, and wander down the age-old Nakamise Shopping Street to reach the main hall and pagoda, where fragrant incense and Buddhist prayer chants fill the air. End your city tour with a browse through the stalls that line Ameya Yokocho Street.

Following breakfast, travel by coach to Hakone. On arrival, make your way to the Hakone Open Air Museum. Take a Hakone Ropeway ride to a mountaintop station with spectacular vistas of the sparkling waters of Lake Ashi and towering Mount Fuji. A short walking trail leads to Owakudani Valley, an active volcanic crater, where hot springs, bubbling pools and steam vents serve as reminders of the area’s volcanic might. Continue on to the shores of Lake Ashi and enjoy a short cruise on this idyllic lake, surrounded by mountains and greenery.

Witness the grandeur of Mount Fuji as a coach ride takes you to the Fifth Station at the mountain's base. Enjoy unobstructed views from the observation deck before learning more about the mountain's cultural significance at the Mount Fuji World Heritage Centre. Your coach ride continues on to the ancient hillside city of Matsumoto. Discover Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most beautiful and oldest castles. Ringed by a moat and soaring up over five stories, a climb up the steps to the top will reward you with mesmerizing views. Check into your hotel in Matsumoto for your overnight stay.

Journey into the Japanese highlands of Yudanaka for an unforgettable encounter with the fluffy snow monkeys of the region, which can survive temperatures of below -15 degrees Centigrade. Witness these fascinating creatures lounging and paddling in the steaming onsen, or hot springs, as they beat the icy conditions. Accustomed to their daily encounters with humans, these fearless primates allow an up-close, memorable experience. Drive onward to Nagano's impressive Zenkoji Temple, which houses what is believed to be the first Buddhist statue brought to Japan. Later, board your train and travel through picturesque rural landscapes, arriving in Kyoto for tonight's stay. Catch a local train to your hotel for tonight's stay.

Experience traditional Japan at its finest as you explore Kyoto, a city of shrines, temples and geisha teahouses. Explore the UNESCO-recognised fortifications and chambers of Nijo Castle then look out for geishas draped in lavish kimonos as you walk through the geisha district of Gion at the end of a thrilling day of exploration. Discover the ancient hallways and sacred waterfall of Kiyomizudera Temple then walk along the streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, past charming traditional wooden houses and shops. Enjoy double visions of gold as you witness the gold-leafed pavilion of Kinkaku-ji and its shimmering reflection mirrored in the surrounding moat. Wander the Zen gardens of Kodaiji Temple before sampling the region's fragrant teas at a traditional tea ceremony in the temple hall.

In the morning visit Fushimi Inari and stroll through an amazing arcade of vivid red 'torii', or shrine gates, inscribed with dedications to Inari, the god of rice. Depart Kyoto for Hiroshima, travelling to Japan's former capital city, Nara, where you'll visit the Todaiji Temple and the world's largest bronze Buddha statue nestled in its interior. Watch over 1,200 deer roaming nearby Nara Park, where deer crackers can be purchased and fed to these friendly park inhabitants. Drive onward to Osaka and catch your bullet train to Hiroshima for your overnight stay.

Start your day with a visit to Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park & Museum where photos and belonging of victims of the Hiroshima bombing are on display, serving as a reminder of the horror of the devastating event. Visit the A-Bomb Dome, one of the buildings which survived the blasts and remains as a symbol of peace in the city, before continuing onward to Miyajima. Take a boat ride to Miyajima Island, known as the 'Island of the Gods' and visit the awe-inspiring Itsukushima Shrine and its towering, free-standing wooden gate which stands in the middle of the sea. Return to your hotel in Hiroshima.

Take a morning tram journey before departing Hiroshima on a bullet train ride to Fukuoka. Well known for its ancient temples, beaches and beautiful Maizuru Park which contains the ruins of 17th-century Fukuoka Castle, Visit the tranquil Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine and learn more about Japan’s long and rich history at the Kyushu National Museum before continuing onward to your hotel for check-in. This evening, visit the Nakasu Area and follow your nose around the fragrant street food stalls. Leave space for tonight’s farewell dinner, which marks the end of your Japanese adventure.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK, or continue on to your chosen extension.

Itinerary idea in detail

Ask us if you would also like us to arrange your international flights at our preferred rates.

After passing through customs and luggage collection, you're met by an airport guide who will give you your trip documents and direct you to the shared shuttle service, which takes you to your hotel. After checking in, spend the rest of the day at leisure, resting and relaxing after your flight. If you want to explore, you may wish to walk around the Imperial Gardens.

Shinjuku district, Tokyo

Your guide will meet you today in the hotel lobby to run through your trip and offer you any local advice so you can enjoy the country with confidence. In the first section, the guide will explain your itinerary in more detail and answer any questions you might have. This can take up to two hours, so afterwards, head out with your guide to see some highlights of the city. Perhaps start with taking a cruise from the Hamarikyu Gardens to the old district of Asakusa to see the beautiful Sensoji temple. In the evening, head out on a street food tour of Tokyo to enjoy some local flavors for which Japan is so famous.

Palace gardens, Tokyo

Today we suggest getting out of the city and visiting the mountain town of Kawagoe, just a 30-minute journey from the capital. Its main street is very reminiscent of Edo (the old capital) hence why Kawagoe is seen as “Little Edo” for its clay-walled buildings or 'kurazukuri'. Here it was an important trading area for merchants from the old capital. It prospered in financial as well as architectural wealth.

Sponsor's lanterns, Asakusa

A second full day in Tokyo presents the chance to visit the Asakusa district. Later, explore the Imperial Palace Gardens or the Meiji Shrine, a large but tranquil Shinto shrine in the middle of the buzzing Harajuku district.

Temple, Akaskusa

Today you travel by express train to Nagoya, where you pick up the bullet train taking you to Tsumago. The journey lasts around three hours. After arriving in Tsumago, a quiet postal town, check in to your traditional ryokan (inn) accommodation. You have the rest of the day to relax or start exploring this town. Notice how certain parts of it are free from TV antennae or other trappings of modern technology to preserve its old-world character.

Tsumago, Japan

Today walk part of the Nakasendo Highway between Tsumago and Magome, along the road that once connected Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. The scenery is beautiful and classic: paddy fields, cedar woods and sleepy villages. Later, travel further into the Japanese Alps to Takayama, a quaint town with an interesting merchant district and sake breweries. The journey takes around four and a half hours by train.

Walk along the Nakasendo Highway, Magome

Take a morning cycling tour around Takayama. Explore the warren of the Sanmachi district, crammed with shops, galleries, museums, sake breweries and 17th-century kura (storehouses). Explore the shrines of Teramachi's wooded park and try local specialities such as Hida beef and Japanese pickles. You could also make the 15-minute train journey to the lesser-known but equally charming town of Furukawa.

Hida Folk Village, near Takayama

Take a two-hour bus transfer to Kanazawa, home to one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan, Kenrokuen. You might want to start your visit to the city by seeing one of its more contemporary sides and browsing the galleries of the excellent 21st Century Art Museum.

Kenrokuen Garden

This morning, head as early as you can to Kenrokuen. The garden is best enjoyed while it's quiet, so you can wander among the ponds, streams, trees and teahouses and consider its design in peace: according to Japanese garden esthetics, Kenrokuen contains the six attributes considered crucial in the creation of a perfect garden. Later, explore Kanazawa's geisha district and Samurai quarters, along with the artisan gold leaf making workshops.

View from tea room, Kenrokuen garden

Take the express train to Osaka and then board the bullet train to Hiroshima. The journey takes four and a half hours. You have the afternoon at leisure after this long day of travel, or you may wish to have a stroll down the city's leafy avenues.

Atomic bomb dome, Hiroshima

A day at leisure to explore Hiroshima in depth. Visit the evocative Peace Park, Memorial Museum and Atomic Bomb Dome. You can also see a reconstructed castle and the Shukkei-en Gardens. Meaning 'shrunken scenery', this space is a great example of how Japanese gardens seek to mimic natural formations and represent natural features like mountains and forests in miniature. Food-wise, this is the place to enjoy okonomiyaki (pancakes with a variety of savory fillings).

Hiroshima, Japan

Today you could take the 20-minute ferry crossing over to the scenic Miyajima Island. Its vermilion torii gate — often described as 'floating' when the gate appears to hover in the water at high tide — is one of the most iconic spots in Japan. You could also take the train to Iwakuni (a journey of just over 50 minutes) to see the Kintai-kyo Bridge, a feat of a bridge made with five arches and not a single nail.

Atomic bomb dome, Hiroshima

Travel east to Kyoto, the ancient capital and cultural heart of Japan. By bullet train, this takes about two hours. In the afternoon, head out on a tour with one of our local guides who can help you make the most out of your time in this multi-faceted city. You could stroll around the Ryoanji gardens and Silver Pavilion temple or head to the geisha quarter, Gion at dusk and hopefully spot a geisha.

Maiko, or apprentice geisha, Kyoto

In the morning, join a local food instructor to learn the methods of cooking and preparing a traditional Japanese bento box. Afterwards, explore Kyoto at your own pace taking in some temples, shrines and shopping streets. The best way to see it is on foot, wandering the quiet gardens and grand palaces that sit side by side with more modern areas as well as narrow traditional streets of wooden buildings.

Japanese lady in summer kimono

Another day at leisure in Kyoto. You may wish to visit the Golden Pavilion — if the weather's fine you'll be treated to the sight of its reflection shimmering in the pond surrounding it. In the evening, your private guide and geisha expert will meet you and take you on a walk around the Gion district, where geisha still live and work. He'll explain about the culture surrounding these enigmatic women, and you'll try to spot geisha on their way to work.

Romon Gate, Fushimi Inari, Kyoto

Take a short (under 20 minutes) train journey to the Fushimi-Inari Shrine this morning to see the tunnels of bright orange torii gates snaking up the hillside. Later, continue by train (about 45 minutes) to Nara to see the Todaiji Buddha and tame deer park.

Sanzenin temple guardian deity

Using your separate rail pass, included in your pack, you will head south to the area of Mount Koya, one of Japan's top three spiritual homes. Here you will enjoy the simple life with a short stay in temple lodgings. It's beautifully quiet and quaint in the simple accommodations.

Buddhist priest

Rise early to explore the town today, when its temples, including Garan Temple, are much quieter and more atmospheric. Take the train back down the mountain to Osaka, and then continue by train to the Hakone National Park. This latter leg takes four and a half hours. This is a long day of travel but with some great scenery en route, especially as you approach Mount Fuji National Park.

Mount Fuji, Japan

Using the travel pass provided, explore Hakone National Park independently. Take in the Open Air Sculpture Museum, Owakudani Valley and ride the cable car that provides views of Fuji on a clear day. You can also visit other viewpoints to get views of Fuji or relax in the park's hot thermal springs.

Hakone Open Air Museum

Return to Tokyo by train (which takes one and a quarter hours) for your final afternoon in Japan. Head to explore a new area of the city, or you might like to go back to an area that caught your imagination at the beginning of the trip. Alternatively, we could arrange tickets for the ever-popular Ghibli Anime Museum, an interactive exhibition celebrating Japan's leading animation studio.

Tokyo and Mt Fuji

Take a shared airport transfer to the airport in time to catch your return flight.

Day-to-day program

You arrive in Tokyo, the world’s largest metropolis, a shuttle bus will directly drive you to your hotel. This bustling city is the economic and cultural hub of the nation.

Explore the historic and culturally significant areas of the metropolis and see some of Tokyo’s most recognisable sights. From the city’s oldest Buddhist temple, Sensoji, to Ginza, one of Tokyo’s most upscale and famous districts, unravel the mysteries of the past and see how it blends seamlessly with the present day.

Tokyo - Kiso Valley

After a leisurely start to the morning, check out of your hotel to take the high-speed bullet train to Nagano. From there continue by express train to picturesque Kiso Fukushima, where you will find yourself stepping back in time to the Edo era.

Kiso Valley

Experience the serene beauty of Japan’s wilderness with a hike along the Nakasendo, an ancient trail that winds through the Kiso Valley and connects the two charming historical post towns of Magome and Tsumago.

Kiso Vallei - Takayama

Wave goodbye to the rustic Edo period town in the Kiso Valley and make your way to Takayama, a charming mountain town framed by the majestic Japan Alps.

Today, you travel to Hida Furukawa — which is just 15 minutes away from Takayama by train — to join a guide and enjoy a scenic cycling tour* of the nearby village of Hida. Start out by riding through the sleepy streets, before heading out to the peaceful countryside.

Takayama - Kanazawa

After checking out of your hotel, make your way to Kanazawa, a city rich in history, culture, and fine arts and crafts. The city is particularly famous for producing 99% of all gold leaf made in Japan.

Pass the day at leisure and see all of the highlights of Kanazawa, starting with the exquisitely preserved geisha district of Higashi Chaya. This is where geisha have entertained their clients for centuries. Stop by Shima Geisha House for a glimpse into geisha life.

Kanazawa - Kyoto

Wave goodbye to beautiful Kanazawa and make your way to Kyoto, Japan’s reigning cultural capital. This captivating city and former Imperial capital boasts over 2,000 shrines and temples, and 17 registered UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Day 11 - 12

Head off the beaten path today and visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, which is famous for the thousands of blazing red torii gates that line the trails winding through the forests. Legend has it that torii are gateways between the earthly and divine realms.

Kyoto - Hiroshima

Hiroshima is a vibrant and thriving city that has found a way to honour its past without being solely defined by it. Besides having a number of historically significant sites to explore, it has an exciting food scene with several delicious specialities to offer.

No visit to Hiroshima is complete without a day trip to Miyajima, the sacred island said to be the dwelling place of the gods.

Hiroshima - Osaka

The next stop on the trip is Osaka — Japan’s culinary capital. Renowned for its delectable soul food, it is an essential destination for foodies.

Osaka is a lively city full of things to see and do. Don’t miss Dotonbori, the beating heart of the city, Shinsaibashisuji, a major shopping arcade that shopaholics will adore, and Osaka Castle, where you can follow the evolution of the city from feudal times to the present day.

Departure from Osaka. Check out of your hotel and make your way to Osaka International Airport by private taxi.

Trip description

Take the last trip to Japan during cherry blossom season, see the blue-eyed flowers and see the elegant Aoi Festival.

If you have missed the beautiful cherry blossoms in March and April, you can still see them in May. Cherry blossoms bloom in Hokkaido about a month after the island of Honshu, between the end of April and the beginning of May. This 21-day Grand Tour of Japan is the longest and most comprehensive group tour of Japan you’ll find. By visiting the four main islands of Japan, travelers can enjoy culture, architecture, nature, rural villages, historical cities, modern city attractions, and even a famous Japan festival.

Starting on the northern island of Hokkaido, we will first visit Otaru for its nostalgic canal area and its glass blowing shops. Continue to Sapporo to see the city’s monuments and entertainment district. You will also learn about the indigenous peoples of Japan at Ainu Village and visit the smoky Noboribetsu Valley. Then, head to Lake Toya and Onuma Park for a scenic interlude. Experience one of Japan’s top three night views from Mount Hakodate.

Take an underwater train tunnel to Aomori, where you will visit the Nebuta Warasse, a colorful museum dedicated to the Nebuta Festival. Visit Lake Towada and enjoy a nature walk along the Oirase Gorge stream. Afterward, head to Morioka Handi-Works Square and Chusonji Temple for a cultural experience. Then, take a sightseeing cruise around Matsushima, a picturesque bay famous for being one of the three most scenic sights in Japan. End your day in a traditional Japanese-style hotel with a relaxing onsen (hot spring) bath and a delicious kaiseki dinner.

Visit the luxurious Toshogu Shrine, see one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Japan, and stroll along Lake Chuzenji. Head to the Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki to see 4.5 million blue-eyed flowers bloom on its hills.

Continue your trip to one of the busiest cities in the world, Tokyo, where our guides and drivers will accompany you to the main attractions. Visit Tokyo’s historical landmarks, trendy neighborhoods, various shopping districts, and even learn how to make your own sushi from a professional sushi chef. Proceed to Mt. Fuji and enjoy the natural scenery of Hakone and Owakudani by cable car. Experience a high-speed Shinkansen bullet train ride before visiting the beautiful Hikone Castle and the uniquely designed Miho Museum.

Experience the Aoi Festival in Kyoto, a well-preserved and elegant procession of 500 people dressed in aristocratic-style clothing. Spend two more days in the historic city of Kyoto, where you will have exclusive access to the best gardens, temples, and specialty shops in the city. Our tour group will also have the opportunity to experience a traditional green tea ceremony, meet an apprentice geisha (maiko), and enjoy an elegant kimono fashion show. Continue to Himeji Castle, an original castle and a world heritage site. Then, head to the beautiful canal city of Kurashiki and the Ohara Museum of Art.

Cross the Seto Ohashi Bridge to Shikoku Island, visit the Shikoku Mura Village Open Air Museum, and take a walk through the Japanese landscape masterpiece of Ritsurin Park. Next, drive through scenic Shimanami Kaido back to Honshu Island, a 60-kilometer toll road that cuts through six small islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Next, take in views of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridges from the Kirosan Observatory. Spend time in Hiroshima, where you will visit the Peace Memorial Park and A-Bomb Dome. Afterward, take a short ferry ride to scenic Miyajima Island, home to the famous vermilion torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine.

Go back in time and visit the Samurai districts of Kitsuki, discover the seething “hells” of Jigoku hot springs, and meet some of Japan’s 1,500 wild monkeys at Mount Takasaki Monkey Park. Explore the legendary city of Takachiho and experience a special Yokagura dance performance. In Nagasaki, visit the Nagasaki and Dejima Peace Park, an area with over 400 years of history in Dutch trade. Stop by Glover Gardens, an open-air museum featuring historic mansions of former western Nagasaki residents. Finally, visit the Oura Catholic Church, the oldest Christian church in Japan.
