Your Itinerary

1 Embark in New York City, NY Enjoy a delightful day of cruising along the Hudson River to West Point.

2 Catskill, NY Steeped in history and tradition, the United States Military Academy at West Point offers visitors the opportunity to walk on the grandiose grounds once trekked by some of the nation’s greatest generals, like Patton, Eisenhower and MacArthur. Founded in 1802 by an act of Congress, the Academy has been of significant military importance to America since Revolutionary days. Tour the West Point Museum and Cadet Chapel and view magnificent vistas of the Hudson Valley from atop the campus grounds.

3 Albany, NY The picturesque region of what is today the city of Albany was discovered by Henry Hudson in 1609 on a failed attempt to find a quick passage to China for the Dutch East India Company. Be sure to explore the New York State Museum and the newly renovated State Capitol building, originally built in the late 1800’s.

Originally the capital of New York in the late 1700’s, today Kingston preserves the maritime heritage of the Hudson River at the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Kingston is also located in an area of the Hudson River often referred to as “Millionaires Row” – with palatial estates and grand mansions reminiscent of the mid-1800’s when wealthy New York businessmen began buying property in the beautiful valley for summer retreats.

Tarrytown & Sleepy Hollow: A Hudson Valley Itinerary

Map of sleepy hollow and tarrytown itinerary.

Tarrytown, New York

Located 25 miles (40 km) north of New York City on the eastern shore of the Hudson River, the hilly Village of Tarrytown can bring a great change of pace for a day or even longer. Like most Northeastern towns, it is stacked with lovely heritage buildings, picturesque riverside views, beautiful green space, and history from Native Americans through European colonization and 20th-century industrialization.

How to Get to Tarrytown

Taking the Metro-North train from Grand Central Station to the Tarrytown stop, you can expect a travel time of just short of an hour. Tickets are priced by peak and off-peak times. And it is suggested that you purchase your tickets online or at the station before departure to secure the most favorable prices. Driving offers a couple of options.

Things to Do in Tarrytown, New York

Main street tarrytown.

Main Street Tarrytown

We started our journey near Westchester County’s oldest theater, the Tarrytown Music Hall . The historic theatre built before 1900 ,  continues to line up entertainment acts including comedy shows, jazz, blues, country, and rock bands.

Conveniently located on Tarrytown Main Street, the theatre is surrounded by commercial businesses and offers a wide selection of restaurants from basic burgers joints to ethnic, organic, and sustainable options.

Tarrytown has an upscale colorful vibe. Walking along the shopping district, you’ll also find trendy boutiques, galleries, and numerous antique shops.

Scenic Hudson RiverWalk

Scenic Hudson RiverWalk

Just under a mile downhill from Main Street toward the Tarrytown Metro-North train station, and right along the water’s edge at Pierson Park, lies the Scenic Hudson RiverWalk.

 Pierson Park

We spent quite a bit of time here taking in the sweeping views spanning from Manhattan to Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. The riverfront park also includes a stretch of lush green space filled with native plants, a playground, picnic pavilion, benches and tennis, and basketball courts. It’s an ideal spot to unwind and  watch the sunset over the river.

A national monument, Sunnyside is the home of Washington Irving, the American author who gave us such memorable characters as Rip Van Winkle , Ichabod Crane, and the Headless Horseman .

Purchased by John D. Rockefeller in the mid-20 th  Century, he fulfilled his ambition to preserve the home as a historic landmark. The Historic Hudson Valley now operates the restored home containing original furniture and accessories. But note, photography of any type is prohibited.

Address: 3 W Sunnyside Ln, Irvington, NY 10533

Lyndhurst Mansion

This 67-acre estate is more of a castle than an ordinary house. The 1838 Gothic Revival mansion, once owned by railroad tycoon Jay Gould, still contains original furnishings collected by its three owners.

Be sure to check out the conservatory, the first of its kind to be reinforced with steel framing. And end the experience with a stroll through the grounds to visit the bowling alley or Rose Cottage. See Lyndhurst.org  for tour schedules and special events.

Address : 635 S Broadway, Tarrytown, NY 10591

Tarrytown Building

Other Mansions  – At the turn of the 19 th  to the 20 th  century, Tarrytown was a hub for millionaires. Many of their estates remain today.

  • Carrollcliffe, now the Castle Hotel & Spa   is built in the Tudor style from stone quarried from the property on which it stands. Initially, there were 45 rooms on a 64-acre plot. Address : 400 Benedict Ave, Tarrytown, NY 10591
  • Hillcrest  was constructed in 1882, Mark Twain purchased the property in 1902 and lived there for two years. In 1915 the original structure was demolished and rebuilt in a more solid form, renaming it Halleston. Undergoing another change during World War II, it is now known as Tappan Hill and is popular for weddings and galas. Address : 81 Highland Ave, Tarrytown, NY 10591

Black Swan Sailing On The Hudson River

The Black Swan is a 36′ Catalina sailboat with plenty of room for relaxing: lounge chairs to enjoy on deck, a teak table and comfortable cushions in the cockpit with lots of room in the cabin. Come enjoy our popular 2-1/2 hour sunset sail, a day sail or experience an all day adventure. All sails are private.

The Hudson Valley is known for its beauty. While sailing on the Hudson River you will see the Catskill Mountain range in the distance. Frequently you can see bald eagles, ducks, blue heron and many other birds. Black Swan Sailing charters include a 2-1/2 hour cruise, a day cruise or two-day getaway. Cruises are limited to six guests and operate May thru October.

Celebrate a birthday or anniversary. Surprise your parents for Mother’s or Father’s Day. Black Swan Sailing can supply a cake or sweets to make the event even more memorable.

The Black Swan has plenty of space in the cockpit as well as a large cabin below to stow your gear. There are two catbird seats behind the helm allowing you to enjoy your sail on the Hudson River. There is a fridge on board for cold storage.

Cruising the Hudson River - a travel blog

The Tarnhelm Voyages Blog is written by Karen and Phil Little, whose home port is Stony Point, New York .

Cruising the Hudson River, the Tarnhelm is a 1992 Carver 33 Tri-Cabin Yacht, with enough room for the two of us to live aboard, plus entertain guests. It features a state room (bedroom), V-birth (little bedroom), a galley and dinette (kitchen), a main salon (livingroom), two heads (bathrooms), and a couple of engines in the bilge (basement).

The 2023 Hudson River cruising season starts on July 1. Maintenance is done, supplies are being brought aboard and soon she'll be heading north up the Hudson River for this year's graet adventure.

Village of Tarrytown – Pierson Park and Scenic Hudson Riverwalk

Pierson Park is a spectacular community commons at a prime spot to admire one of the widest stretches of the Hudson. Among the many offerings for all tastes: sprayground, playground, basketball, tennis, bocce, bandshell, picnic pavilion, all on a pleasantly rolling green looped with paths.

Adjacent are the train station for easy access and the RiverMarket Bar and Kitchen restaurant.

The approximately one-mile Scenic Hudson Riverwalk hugs  the park and leads to the Sleepy Hollow RiverWalk, which visitors can follow all the way to Sleepy Hollow’s iconic Lighthouse and adjacent Edge-on-Hudson development is a magnificent paved path through native flowers, shrubs and grasses, dotted with benches, viewfinders and educational signage to learn about the engineering of the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and the history of the area.
