Hyundai Cruise Control Not Working (9 Ways to Fix)

Cruise control is one of the best features in the latest cars that allow you to drive on long routes without maintaining the speed because you just set the speed of your car.

But it is sometimes quite frustrating when your cruise control stocks or does not work correctly.

If you are facing the same issue and do not know how to fix this problem, then don’t worry because I will tell you all the possible reasons and fixes for this problem.

Let’s dive into:

Table of Contents

How to Fix Hyundai Cruise Control Not Working?

Hyundai Cruise Control not Working

It could be anything that is directly connected to your cruise control system. The blown fuses or the brake lamp might not work correctly.

1. Check the Fuses

The first thing you should have to check is the fuses in your car because all the electric system in the car is connected through fuses.

If one of the fuses blows and does not respond, it could lead the car to non-function of the cruise control.

Check the fuses inside the dashboard and ensure that all the fuses are working fine. If you find any fuse blown, remove it from the circuit and replace it with the newer one.

After replacing the fuse, your cruise control will start working , and you can check it by driving.

2. Speed Sensor

The second thing directly connected to the cruise control is the speed sensor. Cruise control fixes your car’s speed as required or set through the cruise control button.

If the speed sensor is faulty and does not provide the correct speed reading, it could confuse the cruise control and stop working.

Speed sensors are available on almost four wheels of your car, and a single sensor fault will lead the cruise to stop work. Check the speed sensor by yourself and if you cannot do this, then take your Hyundai to the technician and ask him to check the speed sensors.

If you find that the speed sensor is not working correctly, then replacing that sensor is the solution for you.

3. Cruise Control Switch

Sometimes your cruise control switch becomes faulty and does not pass the signals, so your cruise control stop works.

It could occur due to a short circuit or overheating of the engine.

Check the cruise control buttons and see whether they are responsive or not.

If these buttons do not respond on pressing, then you should have to replace your cruise control switch. Sometimes the cruise control buttons get stuck and do not function accurately.

You could buy a new switch and replace it with the older one. But I will recommend you take your Hyundai to a technician.

4. Check the Brake Lights

Brake lights are directly integrated with cruise control, and if the brake light bulb has blown or not working correctly, it could fail cruise control.

A brake padel error or fault will stop cruise control from working. Press the brake padel and see if your brake light and tail light work by applying the brakes.

If the brake lights do not work, replace the brake light bulb and the tail light if it does not work.

5. Engine Problems

The engine may also lead you to cruise control problems due to overheating or improper maint of the engine. If you have driven your Hyundai for a long distance without giving your car rest, your engine may be overheated.

Engine problems could also occur due to improper maint of the engine, like you do not replace engine oil regularly and not maint the engine regularly.

If your car engine is overheated, stop it and turn it off for 10-15 minutes or until its engine cools down.

Also, replace the engine oil regularly and take care of the maintenance of your car engine regularly.

6. Throttle Position Sensor

The throttle position sensor is the central part of your cruise control, and if it fails to work, it will stop your cruise control from working.

You should examine whether your throttle position sensor is working correctly or not. Your car will produce black exhaust or could create dead spots if the position sensor is faulty.

To fix the problem, take your car for a replacement of the throttle position sensor to a technician. The throttle position sensor will cost you almost $160 to $200.

7. Turn Off the Lights

it is silly to say that sometimes your brakes light stops working when you turn on the front lights.

A user said on Hyundai Forum, “I’m having this issue, but I found that if I turn the lights off, the cruise works; however, I’ve noticed that my brake lights don’t work when lights are on. So turning the lights off engages the cruise, but turning them on makes it disengage fine for daytime driving but a massive issue for nighttime driving.”

You could also try this method by turning off the front lights of your car; maybe you are facing the same problem.

But replacing the rear lights could be the permanent solution to this problem.

8. Slippery Road

Cruise control did not work correctly on a slippery road. Because if you apply the sudden brakes on the slippery road, that could damage your car’s brakes or tyers.

And this will lead to cruise control failure.

Try not to use the cruise control while driving on a slippery road or in stormy weather because the cruise control would not work correctly.

9. Electric Fault

Electric supply malfunctioning may also create cruise control problems. Check all the wires are connected correctly and the wiring has no loose connection.

Also, make sure that your car battery is working fine because due to the low-voltage electric system of your car does not work.

To fix the problem, fix all the connections and do not leave a single loose connection; also, ensure that your battery provides accurate voltage.

What Is Hyundai Smart Cruise Control, and Is It the Same as Adaptive Cruise Control?

Adaptive cruise control , optional on many new vehicles today, is one of the latest advanced car safety features. It’s very similar to cruise control, which allows you to set your car to a certain speed. However, the systems offered by automakers like Hyundai use radars to determine when neighboring cars get too close.

Hyundai vehicles also have their own version of adaptive cruise control named Hyundai Smart Cruise Control. Is there anything that makes it better than regular adaptive cruise control? Here’s what the folks at Rosen Hyundai have to say.

All the Hyundai Smart Cruise Control’s features

Since it’s a cruise control system, you can set Hyundai Smart Cruise control at a specific highway speed. It doesn’t mean the car can drive itself, but that’s less pressure that you have to apply to the accelerator. It’s a useful feature to have for road trips, especially if you easily get sore limbs.

Hyundai Smart Cruise Control also has the same elements of adaptive cruise control. The radar system emits waves that reflect off of the car in front of yours, detecting its speed. If the preceding car speeds up or slows down, the Smart Cruise Control adjusts your vehicle’s speed accordingly. It also has a Stop and Go setting, which tracks the driving behaviors of cars around you during traffic.

If the car ahead of you stops unexpectedly, the Smart Cruise Control brakes itself as well. The radar waves are so fast that there’s no delay between the data received from the radars and the resulting functions. Oftentimes, humans can’t react as quickly in emergency situations, resulting in fender benders or collisions. The Cruise Control button is located on the steering wheel, so it’s easy to engage or disengage at a moment’s notice.

The Smart Cruise Control’s radars also won’t be limited by hazardous weather conditions, such as heavy rain or fog. Rosen Hyundai also boasts that Smart Cruise Control is highly reliable, even inspiring some new lunar excursion technology.

Many of the functions offered on Smart Cruise Control can be found on any adaptive cruise control system. However, the Hyundai software offers one really useful perk: the front-mounted radars can still work when the vehicle’s grille gets dirty. Wintery conditions can cause your car’s grille to become covered in snow and slush, which can be hard to remove.

If you’re driving during a blizzard, you can’t really keep your grille clean as you’re driving. Adaptive cruise control is essential in severe weather conditions, especially when drivers around you might struggle to see clearly. Hyundai Smart Control is also usually included in its cars’ standard features, whereas other automakers might make you pay extra.

Which vehicles have Hyundai Smart Cruise control?

Many of the latest Hyundai vehicles have Smart Cruise control, including the 2021 Hyundai Sonata . It also has a nice collection of other standard safety features, like driver drowsiness monitoring, forward automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims can have blind-spot monitors, sensing any vehicle driving above 20 mph.

The Hyundai Sonata also benefits from two engine options, with great gas mileage for the base trim. The cabin feels luxurious, but taller passengers in the backseat might not have enough legroom.

The Hyundai Palisade is more spacious, able to seat up to eight riders. The first two rows are incredibly roomy, and even the third row can accommodate some adults. It only has one engine choice, but it packs enough horsepower to keep this SUV moving quickly.

Critics also report it handles well despite the added weight over its sedan siblings. Like the Sonata, the Palisade includes Hyundai Smart Cruise control in its generous library of standard driver’s aids.

Cruise Control "Set" No Longer Works

  • Add to quote

When I turn my Cruise Control "On" it will light up green on my dashboard, However when I press the "set" button to set the speed nothing happens. It was working fine a few weeks ago. Could it be a fuse? If so what fuse? Any other ideas on how I can fix this? 2011 Sonata

hyundai cruise control button

There are certain signals sent to the engine PCM that will prevent the cruise control from setting. Your problem is unlikely to be a blown fuse and more likely to be one of those inputs to the PCM that is preventing it from working. The input from the brake pedal seems to be the most common one to cause problems so the first thing to do is make sure your brake lights are working properly. If that checks out OK have the engine scanned to see if there are any trouble codes logged that might explain why the cruise control isn't working.

hyundai cruise control button

Like Autospark said, I have seen a some that the brake switch prevented the cruise control to engage.

hyundai cruise control button

My cruise control was not working I had a remote starter put on that wouldn't work. He found that the led tail light bulbs i put in would not let the remote work, it was sending a 6volt signal to the brake probably screwing up the cruise also since it thought the brake was on. not enough to light the brake lights but enough to stop the remote start from working. I changed to regular bulbs and now the remote is working. going to check the cruise control later

It happened to me, and it was faulty CC switch. Mine got replaced under warranty.

Where is the cc switch

We replacing Cruise switch assembly pretty regular, we keep part on shelf... TIP : lightly press "SET".. dont "spank" the button, that why they stop working..

I have the same issues on my 2011 Sonata GLS w/ 90k miles. The Set button will come on sometimes after repeatedly pushing it and the Cancel button. If it does set, the Cancel button is never working. The On/Off button is the only one that works all the time. It will disengage if I press the brake pedal. So I see the Phillips screw underneath the switch, it was a bitch to unscrew, but finally got it out tonite. I was expecting the switch would easily come out. NOPE, something is still holding it in! I can pry it up just a bit, but can't tell what is still holding it. What's the deal? Anybody know? I am ready to buy a new switch if I can get the **** thing out. About $80 list and I can get it for about $52. Someone mentioned inputs to the PCM. My SRS red warning light has been on for a few months, I have not taken the time to take it to the dealer, could this be causing the cruise control problem?? I sort of doubt it. And yes, I did try blowing compressed air into the switch. No help.

I looked at a previous PDF attachment and now see you have to take the airbag module AND the steering wheel off to unplug the cruise control switch. Too much for me, hate to see what the dealer will charge!

I had similar problems started after dealer performed brake pedal recall. They had to replace brake switch as a part of the recall.

I'm having this issue but i found that if i turn the lights off the cruise works however I've noticed that my brake lights don't work when lights are on. So turning the lights off makes cruise engage but turning them on makes it disengage fine for day time driving but a huge issue for nighttime driving

Sounds like it's figured out, but I'll throw in another idea. My cancel button is sticky. I can turn on no problems, but set works only 75% of the time. Usually massaging or pressing cancel a few times, then pressing set solves my problems. When it starts being more troublesome I may dig into the whole assembly.

Thank you guys so much for your suggestions!

Started out with warning light on dash display for brakes which worked just fine and all seemed well when checked out. Then moved on to cruise not working, on but not being able to set it. Turned out to be the "clockspring" or something like that. Its on the steering column and a whole mess of stuff connects through it. Several hundred dollars to the dealer later, all is well. Except my wallet.

hyundai cruise control button

Does the set work if you manually switch the headlamps on?

hyundai cruise control button

I have a 2014 Sonata Limited that is having intermittent issues with the cruise control. The issue first appeared about 2 years ago. Have found that sometimes I can get the Cruise to "set" by pressing the "Cancel" button hard a few times.(But sometimes pressing any or all of the cruise buttons does nothing.) If pressing the cruise buttons doesn't work- I literally ball my right hand into a fist and bang hard & sharply on the steering wheel to the right of the Cruise Control buttons a couple of times. I can't tell you what it does- BUT IT WORKS- and then I can set my cruise control again. I use my cruise control often, and sometimes it'll work fine for a day, and sometimes it works for a couple of weeks before I have to do this again. But as far as I'm concerned- this problem is obviously an issue with the switch in the steering wheel. Been doing this for over 2 years, and getting away with it. It may be a little on the Neanderthal side- but still much cheaper & easier than taking it to a dealer for diagnosis and repairs. Bought my Hyundai brand new in 2014. Have taken good care of it, but have had(and am having) several issues with it. As a result I won't be buying another Hyundai. This kind of stuff shouldn't be happening. Never had these tricky tacky cheesy malfunction issues with my previous car.(a Toyota Camry)

hyundai cruise control button

Mine was doing the same but I was able to get it to work by getting the speed above 25 and turning cruise on and then tapping the set button real fast and watch the dash next to were it says cruise and seen the set indicator come on. And I had to keep tapping it alot but after maybe 5 or 6 times tapping it till set light came on it now comes on with just one tap.

What I have discovered with my CC buttons intermittency is the cable connector at the top of the steering wheel under the airbag is oxidized and not making good contact. If I take it apart and pull the plug off and clean the pins a little with a dry piece of magic eraser, it will start working 100% again for a short while. Then slowly gets worse. A sharp rap on the top of the airbag when driving usually resolves the issue until I have to take it apart and clean again. I've thought about using some dielectric gel on it to see if it will slow the oxidation, but haven't yet. I destroyed my original CC buttons with a cleaner that didn't like the insides of it, so what I have now is a used one. Might replace it and see if it is wearing there; it is really easy to do.

When buttons on the steering wheel stop working or become intermittent then it is probably the clock spring but you may have to wait for the air bag light to go on before you can get it fixed for free.

Simple trouble shooting is a whole lot cheaper than throwing parts at the problem.

Yeah I agree. Best of luck with that

I had it replaced on my 13 under warranty, but on my 14 I put too many miles on it so I have been doing the cancel button and then set for a few years now. Too cheap. Also for a while, when I hit the cruise on button it will often act like I'm hitting the Trip button on the buttons at the lower right of the steering wheel and it goes through those options until cruise finally turns on. 🤣 Ain't CAN great?

krudawg said: I've had a cruise control issue with my 2011 Elantra. Based on reading this forum, I first replaced the Brake Light Switch. It did not fix the CC. Then I replaced the CC Switch assembly on the steering wheel; still not fixed. Then I took it to the dealer to replace the clock spring (it was replaced for free because Hyundai extended to warranty to 15 years). Voila! Cruise Control works now. 10 most popular cars in Russia (PHOTOS)

hyundai cruise control button

In Russia, every third resident has their own vehicle. At the beginning of 2021, 45 million passenger cars were registered in the country. Almost a third of these are made by the Russian car company LADA. Toyota is currently the second most popular brand, with over four million cars in the country— the RAV4 and Camry are the most popular models. Next come Hyundai and Kia with over two million cars each in the country.

hyundai cruise control button

Compared with the United States and most of Europe, where around two out of three residents have their own vehicle, the car market in Russia is still relatively open and continues to develop. Russia imposes rather large customs duties on imported cars in order to force international car companies to produce their vehicles inside the country. As a result, many foreign car manufactures have localized their production in Russia and in some cases even modified their car models to accommodate Russian road conditions and people's tastes.

Russians prefer low-budget crossovers and sedans. Hatchbacks and station wagons are less common, and small electric cars are generally an unusual sight (there are just 11,000 electric cars in the country, and 9,000 of them are the Nissan Leaf).

"Russians are not interested in hatchbacks because of the lack of association with a high position in society," says Alexey Kozhukhov, an automotive marketing expert. He notes that in the Soviet period, a long Volga sedan was considered a high-class car and a symbol of power, and that these associations have been passed on to subsequent generations.

Manufacturers have created economy-class sedans and SUVs that are specifically catered to the Russian market. According to the Association of European Businesses , in the first half of 2021 around 45% of new cars sold were crossovers.

Best selling cars in Russia in 2021

1. lada granta.

hyundai cruise control button

The simplest and cheapest car on the Russian market, the Granta is assembled at the AvtoVAZ plant in Togliatti. Some typical customer reviews state that the car is “reliable and without problems” or that “I didn’t have big illusions and got what I expected.” A sedan without air conditioning costs 560,000 rubles ($7,800), and the LUXE version with a heated windshield, cruise control and an automatic transmission costs 780,000 rubles ($11,000).

2. Lada Vesta

hyundai cruise control button

Lada’s latest model, the Vesta, is designed to be a sedan and crossover, although there is also a sports version. The car meets most consumers’ needs but is cheaper than foreign brands. “When I bought it, I understood that it was AvtoVAZ and there might be problems ahead, but the desire to buy this beauty simply prevailed, and I only wanted a new car in this budget,” one Russian driver writes , adding that he didn’t want to buy a used car.

The simplest model with a manual transmission, air conditioning and airbags sells for 795,000 rubles ($11,200), while the most expensive “Sport” version costs 1.2 million rubles ($17,000).

3. Hyundai Creta

hyundai cruise control button

This crossover is one of the most inexpensive cars in its class in Russia. Its price ranges from 1.2 million rubles ($17,000) to about 2 million rubles for the top version ($28,000). “Many Creta owners with a 1.6-liter engine complain about the sluggish dynamics. I wasn't looking for a racing car, so the car is fine for me. My priority was AWD, which fully justified itself. Now I can go to nature any time and not worry about getting stuck on a dirt road,” writes one driver from the Urals.

Hyundai also was also the first car manufacturer in Russia to offer online sales directly from the factory without the dealer.

4. Hyundai Solaris

hyundai cruise control button

The Solaris is a version of the Accent that was localized specifically for Russia in 2010 and is produced in St. Petersburg. Russian drivers seem quite satisfied with the model, which is a budget sedan that is resistant to temperature changes and harsh weather conditions and is generally reliable. “I wanted to use it for at least five years without looking under the hood,” wrote one driver about why he chose this model.

The Solaris ranges in price from 890,000 rubles ($12,500) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300) for the top configuration.

5. KIA Rio

hyundai cruise control button

The KIA Rio has also been produced in St. Petersburg since 2011, and, like the Solaris, only comes in a sedan model, which is more popular among local customers. The design and technical characteristics of the Russian Rio are slightly different from versions sold in other countries. Many drivers note that it has good heating and the ability to start at minus 30 Celsius. As a result, the car has become one of the best-selling models in the country. It ranges in cost from 950,000 ($13,400) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300)

6. Volkswagen Polo

hyundai cruise control button

All Polo models sold in Europe are hatchbacks, but in Russia Volkswagen opted to modify this legendary model to produce what has become one of the most popular sedans in Russia. “The car is a car. The trunk is huge and comfortable. There is quite a lot of space in the cabin, both in front and behind. The driving is not bad, better than other cars of this class,” writes one owner.

The Polo Sedan is assembled at a factory in Kaluga (about 200 km from Moscow). The cheapest model costs 1 million ($14,100), while the most expensive version goes for 1.9 mln rubles ($26,800).

7. Lada Niva

hyundai cruise control button

The first Soviet SUV is still in production and has a loyal customer base for its combination of being extremely cheap and strong for off-road driving. Many Russians use it to get to their remote dachas.

The simplest version costs 660,000 rubles ($9,300). The most expensive version is called the Niva Travel (formerly the Chevrolet Niva), costs 993,000 rubles ($14,000) and is equipped with a snorkel in case the car is overtaken by water in severe road conditions. And there is no automatic transmission! “Its passion is dirt roads, super suspension, it ‘swallows’ holes in the roads, you don't notice irregularities,” wrote a driver from the Amur Region in the Far East. However, customers note that the interior is not particularly comfortable and that the car consumes a lot of fuel.

8. Škoda Rapid PA II

hyundai cruise control button

This is another economy class sedan that has won the hearts of many Russian drivers. “The new Rapid is comfortable to drive, there is a lot of automation,” says one owner from St. Petersburg. They go on to write : “Turn the steering wheel and hit the gas, and switch on cruise control on a high-way, and the car will do everything else by itself.”

The Škoda Rapid is assembled at a plant in Kaluga. The simplest version costs 990,000 rubles ($14,000) and already includes a media system with a touch screen and Bluetooth. The most expensive version costs 1.4 million rubles ($19,700).

9. Renault Duster

hyundai cruise control button

Renault cars are assembled in Moscow. For a long time, the most popular Renault model was the Logan sedan, but this year the Duster SUV took that title. "Who can imagine a life that is no longer just being in a hurry," one driver jokes about driving the car. "The Duster is a family car. The car is enough to cheerfully stay in traffic" writes another.

The price of the simplest model with a manual transmission starts at 1 million rubles ($14,300), while the most expensive 4x4 version is twice as much.

10. Lada Largus VP

hyundai cruise control button

The only wagon model in this list is also produced by the Russian company AvtoVAZ. Largus is a fairly budget car that is popular not only among dacha enthusiasts, but also for commercial purposes. “The main plus is the suspension and stability on the road,” writes a driver from Tyumen (Siberia), “No need to worry about driving the highway on Largus in winter.” All versions are equipped with a manual transmission and cost from 780,000 ($11,000) to 978,000 rubles ($13,700).
