From Books to Brews: The Top Study Spots around Imperial College London

Guest Blogger

Written by Romita Trehan, MSc Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology

As one of the world’s leading universities, Imperial College London attracts a diverse range of students from all over the globe. With its central London location, Imperial offers a variety of study spots that are perfect for students to hunker down and get some work done. In this blog, we will explore some of the best study spots around Imperial College London.

  • Central Library: The Central Library is in the heart of the South Kensington campus, making it a convenient study spot for students. With over 430,000 books and access to countless online resources, this library has everything you need for a successful study session. The library also offers private study rooms and group study spaces that can be booked in advance. There is an open group study area on the ground floor with whiteboards, comfortable cushioned seats, and a few cubicles facing the ‘Flowers’ and ‘Sir Ernst Chain’ buildings. The floors above have individual cubicles, with bookshelves all around you and a pleasant view of the Queen’s lawns, so whether you are a night owl or a morning person, the view will not disappoint. It is much quieter too than the open group study area but if you want extra quiet spaces with no disturbances, you can always go to the silent study area! With the Library Café close by, you can grab a snack or a coffee to recharge.
  • Queen’s Lawn: Talking about the view from the library, Queen’s Lawn is a popular spot for students to study during the warmer months. The grassy area is surrounded by trees and benches, making it a peaceful and serene environment to focus on your work. The area also offers free Wi-Fi, so you can easily connect to the internet and access your online resources. It is a great spot to not only hang around but also to study on a sunny afternoon.
  • Life Science Common Room: Located in the Sir Ernst Chain Building, it is open to all Life Science students. This space provides students with a comfortable and relaxed environment to study, socialise, and collaborate with their peers. The common room offers a variety of amenities, including sofas, chairs, tables, and whiteboards for group study sessions. The room also has a kitchenette with a microwave and fridge, making it easy for students to prepare and store their own meals.
  • Chemistry Café: Located on the ground floor of the Chemistry Building, the Chemistry Café is a popular spot for students to grab a quick bite to eat or a cup of coffee between classes. In addition to its food and beverage offerings, the Chemistry Café also provides a comfortable and casual environment for students to study and collaborate on group projects. The café has ample seating, including booths and tables with power outlets for laptops and other electronic devices. These spaces provide a sense of community and collaboration, which can be especially valuable for students studying challenging subjects such as Chemistry and Life Science. In addition, the amenities provided in these spaces, such as power outlets, whiteboards, and kitchenettes, make it easier for students to focus on their studies and be productive throughout the day. One of my favourites!
  • Skempton Building: The Skempton Building is a modern facility that offers a range of study spaces, including individual study carrels, group study rooms, and open-plan study areas. The building also has a café and a lounge area, where you can take a break and recharge before diving back into your studies. Engineering students would know it better and
  • Beit Quad: The Beit Quad is a beautiful outdoor space that is perfect for studying during the warmer months. With its picturesque surroundings and ample seating, this area is a popular spot for students to gather and work on their assignment.

  • About Silwood Park

The Silwood Park grounds are one of the campus highlights. The extensive 100ha of land Includes grassland, scrubland, mature woodland, three streams, a large lake, an orchard, an ornamental Japanese garden, multiple allotments and a croquet lawn amongst many other attractive features.

The grounds were originally landscaped by Humphry Repton in the 1790s and include many undisturbed natural habitats providing a refuge for wildlife and play host to many ecological experiments.

The grounds surrounding the manor house are more formal and include large beech and cedar trees dating back over 300 years. The National Collection of Narcissus was moved from Sunningdale to Silwood’s Wishing Well Lawn in 2004.

A large expanse of grass in front of the manor house and beyond the ha-ha is used for sporting activities and Silwood’s own annual music festival, while large allotments are available for students wanting to grow some of their own produce.

Further sustenance comes from the eggs laid by Silwood’s resident chickens who occupy a walled garden close to the manor house.

The size and variation within the Silwood grounds makes them a great asset to the campus and ensures they are used extensively for work, play and relaxation by both the staff and students alike.

The London Experience

  • Academic Excellence
  • Beyond the Classroom
  • Safety and Support
  • Why Oxford Royale?

Students at our London Summer School will enjoy an unparalleled learning experience, designed to equip them with the skills needed for the world of university and to shape future careers. Our two-week academic timetables consist of 40 hours of lessons in career-focussed subjects, combining engaging workshops, seminars and group projects. All of this takes place in the truly inspiring academic environment Imperial College London.

Our London Summer School programmes are designed by experts in their respective fields to give students the ultimate educational experience. We carefully build timetables, making sure that every moment comes together to turbocharge our students’ entry into their chosen subject.

Our teachers – often lecturers and graduates from top UK universities – inspire students to excel. Teachers cater to the individual needs of each student, and adapt their teaching style appropriately. Our students will be prepared for their university applications and guided in their career aspirations by learning more about different specialisms within their field.

Students will not just be taught in a traditional classroom setting, but will learn in a myriad of dynamic ways. This includes independent research, undertaking group projects with their international classmates, academic and practical workshops with experts in their field, and an all-day immersive Challenge Day – a unique opportunity to apply their skills to a real-world scenario.

Over the programme, we host many educational events in some of the amazing venues in London . Every evening students will have the chance to take part in our Public Speaking and Debate Society to develop confidence and communications skills, all culminating in our debate grand final. 16-18 students also enjoy enriching seminars, such as our ‘Shaping Your Future’ series and the Headline Address discussing an important modern issue

All students’ accommodation, lessons, meals, lectures, and events will take part in the amazing educational venues of London . Programmes utilise the world-class facilities in London to ensure our students get the most from their studies. For example, Law & Politics students last year had the opportunity to visit the Old Bailey – the home of UK criminal law.

We ensure that students who attend our London Summer School not only develop crucial academic skills, but also have a summer to remember. Our programmes include exclusive cultural activities including events, exciting excursions, and social and sporting activities to ensure our students get the most out of their stay in the global city of London. Some examples include:

Students at our London Summer School will enjoy thrilling excursions to nearby cultural sites during the programme. For example, students may have the opportunity to explore world-famous landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye .

Students will have the chance to visit one of London’s top theatres to enjoy an immersive performance of Guys and Dolls.

After weeks of learning, we make sure students can celebrate with fun parties in amazing campus venues. On each Friday of the programme, we host a party with a specific theme for each of our age groups, complete with activities, a DJ, or a silent disco.

As well as our educational timetable and exclusive events and excursions, we also have a thoroughly planned set of activities for our students to relax and make new friends through, such as our campus Talent Show and the Olympics in the Park.

As the programmes draw to a close, students are invited to attend an illustrious graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievements, in which they will receive their certificates in an amazin g Imperial College venue .

Student welfare is our number-one priority. We do everything within our power to make sure that their summer is a safe and happy one, and the Oxford Royale teams have been recognised nationally for this commitment.

We pride ourselves on the exceptional level of pastoral care we provide to our students, made possible by the expertise and experience of our staff. They are supported by our robust system of welfare policies and procedures that has been developed over two decades of providing successful summer programmes.

Oxford Royale has been twice awarded the prestigious RoSPA Bronze Award for our health and safety practices. RoSPA has been running for almost 100 years, making vital changes in legislation surrounding accident prevention. We are delighted by the continuing recognition of the extensive lengths we go to in ensuring all our students, teachers, and staff enjoy a safe time while they are with us.

The summer courses are run by an exceptional and experienced staff, led by our Programme Director. The Director is supported by a team of Counsellors who ensure that students are looked after culturally, and socially during their programme, as well as meeting any pastoral needs. Each campus has dedicated members of staff who are residential throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time, day or night.

Safety, happiness and inclusion are woven into the fabric of our summer programmes. One of the most important and enriching aspects of a summer programme with Oxford Royale is the opportunity for bright young people to interact, network and build new lifelong friendships with students from across the globe and from different cultures. There will always be counsellors on campus to reassure or advise, and our team has decades of experience in the international school sector.

Oxford Royale is the UK's leading international summer school and for nearly two decades, we’ve given students around the globe access to world-leading academic programmes and an unrivalled cultural experience. We’ve helped launch brilliant careers, provided the market’s widest range of courses, and created an authentic taste of university life.

Oxford Royale has welcomed more students than any other academic summer school provider. 99% of our alumni recommend us and we have more five-star reviews than the other providers combined. More parents trust Oxford Royale to help their children than any other provider, and have done for the last 20 years.

Unlike other summer programmes, our curriculum is developed by academic experts who draw from their wealth of teaching experience and subject expertise, crafting programmes that allow students to grasp the core concepts of their field of study, and enlighten them to the current issues and innovations shaping the future of their subject. Our students receive comprehensive educational materials designed by us, containing the key concepts they are learning in class, alongside useful resources to help them grow as an ambitious learner and reach their full potential.

London summer school testimonial 1

“I feel like I am having a taste of university at a young age. This is setting me up for the future. It will help me decide where I want to live in the future, and if I want to major in this course at university. Meeting new people has been my highlight so far. Building connections for the future is so important, and I think I am doing it right here.” Gary, Lebanon

London summer school testimonial 2

“The Oxford Royale programme is very professional. That’s probably the word I would use to describe it the most. It is also so much fun, because it allows us to explore the city and experience what it is like to be an independent student in the UK. I feel like I have made friendships that I will pursue in the future and never forget. ” Jenna, Canada

I went to different summer schools within the past few years but this one was the best. This summer school gave me a chance to experience college life at a young age, learn interesting courses from a well experienced staff and connect with people from all around the world.

It truly is an amazing experience, and for anyone hesitating to try the course- go for it! I myself am an introvert and was anxious to not make friends or fit in. I was wrong. Everyone was so kind and inclusive. It truly was one of the greatest experiences of my life. 10/10 recommend.

I had an amazing time and I can’t wait to come back next year.

It was a spectacular experience and I learned a lot. I would recommend it to all my friends who loves an experience such as this, an experience where you will meet people from all over the world and learn a lot. It was a fun experience I will never forget

One of the best experiences in my entire life. I had a great time I met new friends and I am still in contact with them I viewed London and other parts of England and most importantly I improved my English and my accent. Finally, it was really nice to meet people from all around the world and learning about their culture and the courses were super helpful and I became more open minded by attending them

I’ve spent the best two weeks of my lofe at ORA. The friends I’ve made will stay in my life forever. The teachers and courses are also very interesting. Lots of love to everyone at ORA and considering to go there. Anna
