Aside from our islands and beaches, mountains abound in every part of the Philippines that there’s a mountain for everyone, whether beginner or pro. 

So if you’re an outdoorsy person and hiking is your thing, you’re in for some epic, panoramic views from high above. Here are 10 mountains in the Philippines , from Mount Ulap in Benguet to Mount Apo in Davao, where everyone can be rewarded with the most spectacular views.

– For beginners –

1. taal volcano, batangas – features a crater lake.

For beginners who are not yet keen on climbing challenging terrain, Taal Volcano is the way to go. Located in Batangas and standing out from Taal Lake, it’s a small volcano at 311 meters tall. 

Its main crater has a lake, so your climb will be rewarded with this unique geographical view that also makes the volcano a popular tourist attraction.

The Spanish Trail, a popular route among hikers, can be trekked by foot or horseback ride. Hiking via this trail can take about 4 hours. Aside from hiking, you can enjoy the views of the Taal Volcano and its surrounding lake by renting a boat – if you’re lucky, you can even catch a glimpse of a school of tawilis (freshwater sardines) in the lake.

While it’s a small volcano, it has had several violent eruptions, the most recent of which was in January 2020 and covered nearby areas in the south of Metro Manila with ashes. So when you’re planning to go, make sure to check the latest Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) advisory first. 

How to get there: From Metro Manila, catch a bus going to Balayan or Nasugbu from Pasay. When you get off at Tanuan Bayan, ride a tricycle to Talisay, then hop on a boat to Taal. If you’re planning to stay the night after your climb, you can check out nearby accommodation in Tagaytay .

2. Mount Gulugud Baboy, Batangas – offers views of bays and islands

With a height of 525 meters, Mount Gulugud Baboy in Anilao, Batangas is a perfect destination for hikers wanting to see the scenic views of bays and islands in Batangas. There’s plenty to see here, as the mountain is also famous for its lush, rolling landscapes and abundance of animals such as dogs, cows, and goats.

If you are into diving, you can also take side trips to nearby resorts such as Phil Pan Diving Resort and Planet Dive Anilao. Sombrero Island – Batangas’s hidden, smallest island – is nearby and offers spectacular views. 

How to get there: Take a bus to Batangas Grand Terminal from Pasay. Once in Batangas, take a jeep to Anilao, then catch a tricycle going to the mountain. If you’re planning to camp, there’s no designated campsite on the mountain, but you can pitch a tent nearby the peak to get gorgeous evening and sunrise views. 

3. Mount Batulao, Batangas – known for its rugged grasslands

Batangas is indeed filled with unique geographical landscapes, including a mountain that gives off the vibe of Batanes’ rolling hills. At 693 meters, Mount Batulao in Nasugbu, Batangas is known for its stunning views of boulders and rugged grasslands.

Aside from the views, the mountain has beginner-friendly slopes. You can climb the mountain via the Old Trail and the New Trail. It’s advisable that you begin with the harder path first, the Old Trail, which features a more challenging route as you’ll have to rappel on some paths, while the New Trail has easier terrain. 

How to get there: Mount Batulao is a few hours away from Metro Manila. At Buendia Terminal in Pasay, ride a bus going to Nasugbu, Batangas, then get off at KC Hillcrest Golf Club. There are 10 campsites on the mountain where you can pitch your tent, but staying at the summit is not allowed.

4. Mount Makiling, Batangas and Laguna – has mud and hot springs

With a height of 1,090 meters, Mount Makiling watches over the towns of Los Baños and Calamba in Laguna and Sto. Tomas in Batangas. The mountain is known for its geothermal areas such as mud and hot springs, so if you’re planning an overnight stay in Laguna before climbing this peak, there’re a lot of nearby hot spring resorts you can relax in too. 

Its forest has been declared as an ASEAN Heritage Park because it’s home to a variety of species, 62 of which are native to the Philippines such as the Philippine eagle owl, Philippine pygmy fruit bat, and the Philippine monkey. Aside from this, in Filipino mythology, the mountain is even believed to be the sanctuary of lady Maria Makiling whose reclining position is said to be akin to the mountain’s shape. 

How to get there: You can begin your trip to Mount Makiling by taking a bus going to Sta. Cruz, Laguna from Cubao. Get off at Olivarez Mall in Los Baños, then take a jeep going to UPLB College of Forestry. There are two campsites on the mountain where you can pitch your tent: the Tayabak Campsite and Malaboo Campsite.

5. Mount Hibok-Hibok, Camiguin – offers majestic views of White Island

Rising to an elevation of 1,332 meters, Mount Hibok-Hibok guards over Camiguin Island. While every mountain’s peak offers great views, Mount Hibok-Hibok’s summit is where you can marvel at the majestic White Island, a white sandbar stretching on Camiguin Island.

The Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-Hibok Natural Monument, comprising the forests of Mount Timpoong and Hibok-Hibok, is also one of the ASEAN Heritage Parks in the Philippines. The park is considered a heritage park because of its unique species such as the Camiguin hawk owl, Camiguin narrow-mouthed frog, and medicinal tree Kalingag. 

Nearby hot springs abound, such as the Ardent Hot Springs made up of man-made pools, a popular starting point when climbing the mountain.

How to get there: Take a van going to Agora Terminal from Cagayan de Oro, then catch a van or bus going to Balingoan Port. Once at the port, hop on a boat going to Benoni Port. You can pitch a tent at the mountain’s base camp.

– For experienced climbers –

6. mount ulap, benguet – overlooks cordillera mountain ranges.

Nestled high in Itogon, Benguet, Mt. Ulap stands at 1,846 meters and offers views of the Cordillera mountain ranges. It makes for a perfect day hike for tourists coming from Baguio, as it’s only a 40-minute ride from Burnham Park and hiking can be completed from 4-6 hours. 

The stunning landscapes of the mountain, dotted with pine groves and formed by rolling grasslands, indeed represent the region’s geographical features.

The Gungal Rock, protruding over a steep cliff, is one of the most popular stops on the mountain. It’s a perfect spot to take pictures, as it offers you a panoramic view of the surrounding mountainous hills under a sea of clouds. You can also learn a thing or two about ancient traditions while climbing the mountain as you’ll pass by ancient burial caves, where you can see skulls and bones. 

Due to its location in the chilly highlands of North Luzon, bring thick jackets with you when climbing the mountain as temperatures can range from 15 to 20°C.

How to get there: When heading to the mountain from Baguio, take a jeep going to Barangay Ampucao in Itogon, then get off at Ampucao Elementary School. There are several campsites on the mountain, but look out for manure from cows grazing on the field.

7. Mount Kanlaon, Negros Island – highest point in the Visayas

Mount Kanlaon , which stands at 2,435 meters, is the highest point in the Central Visayas and one of the Philippines’ active volcanoes. Aside from its diverse flora and fauna, the mountain is brimming with hot springs such as the Mambucal Hot Springs, Bucalan Hot Spring, and Bungol Hot Spring where you can relax and take a warm bath. 

Wasay, Mananawin, Maput and Guintubdan are four trails that reach the mountain’s summit. It takes about 2 days to hike the mountain via most of these routes, while the Guintubdan trail can be conquered by experienced hikers in one day. The mountain has two summit cones with craters, and Pagatpat Ridge, an intersection point of all four trails, is where hikers can set up camp overnight. 

How to get there: Take a van from the Bacolod-Silay Airport. Get off at the Ceres South Bus Terminal in Bacolod, then ride a bus bound for Canlaon. 

Once in Canlaon, you can ask the driver to drop you off at the Canlaon City Bus Terminal where habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) drivers wait.

8. Mount Mayon, Bicol – famous for its symmetrical cone shape

Mayon Volcano , which rises to 2,462 meters, is world-renowned for its symmetrical cone shape. Its beauty has inspired a popular romantic myth from Bicol about a princess named Magayon and a warrior named Handiong, a prince from a tribe that rivalled against hers.

While it’s a natural beauty, it’s also one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes. It has erupted several times – the most violent eruption, that claimed thousands of lives, was recorded in 1814. 

The remains of the Cagsawa Church from the 1814 eruption can still be found near the mountain and have been a popular attraction in Albay as well. Do make sure to check the latest safety advisory from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) before you head there. 

When it’s open for climbers, the mountain has two trails – the Buyuhan and Buang trails – that you can walk on to reach the summit. There are two camps on the mountain: Camp 1 is at the foot of Mayon, while Camp 2 is located near a waterfall.

How to get there: As traveling by land to Albay from Metro Manila can take a while, booking a flight to Legazpi Airport from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) can be more convenient.

9. Mount Pulag, Benguet – offers views of a sea of clouds

Elevated 2,926 meters above the ground, Mount Pulag is the third-highest mountain in the Philippines. Aside from Mount Ulap, the mountain is also a perfect stopover when you’re in Baguio, as it’s within the Cordillera region. Here, you’ll be rewarded with views of a sea of clouds as the mountain stretches from Ilocos Norte to the Cordillera provinces. 

A variety of wildlife species, such as the Philippine Brown Deer and Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat, thrives here, while its forest is home to the rate pitcher plant and pine trees. It has 4 trails, with varying levels of difficulty. Ambangeg Trail is the easiest, while Ambaguio trail is the most difficult because of its steep inclines. 

Since it’s located in the highlands of North Luzon, you should bring a thick jacket when climbing this mountain as temperatures can drop to 1°C.

How to get there: Ride a taxi going to Old Slaughter House from Baguio, then get off at a van terminal in Kabayan. Head to the local Department of Natural Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) station, and from there, ride a habal-habal going to the Ranger Station. 

Do plan your trip dates ahead of time, as during the weekends, you can only camp at Ranger Station, while Camps 1 and 2 are open on weekdays.

10. Mount Apo – the Philippines’ highest peak

Standing tall at 2,954 meters, Mount Apo in Davao del Sur is the Philippines’ highest peak. Stretching across 64,000 hectares of land, the mountain is home to various geographical wonders, so you’ll be rewarded with plenty of things to see here such as lush landscapes, lakes, rivers, and volcanic deposits. It’s also home to about 272 bird species such as the Philippine Eagle. 

Reaching this mountain’s summit, which takes about 3 to 4 days, is only advisable for experienced mountaineers. There are various trails you can choose to take, but the most popular is the Sibulan – Mt. Apo trail for its easy accessibility from Davao City an hour away, and the beautiful wildlife along the way. 

How to get there: From Davao Airport, you can get to the mountain by hailing a taxi or rent a car going to the mountain’s starting point. There are three camps on the mountain – the Sitio Tompis bake camp, Tinikaran Holding Camp 1, and Tinikaran Holding Camp 2, where a tiny dam of still water can be found.

In the Philippines, hikers choose which mountain to climb by using the “relative” difficulty rating system devised by the author of Pinoy Mountaineer , Gideon Lasco. This system serves as an informal classification of Philippine mountains used by Filipino mountaineers when planning hikes.

The Pinoy Mountaineer difficulty rating system includes a minor/major classification and a difficulty scale of 1-9 which takes into consideration the length of the hike and the preparations required. This system also incorporates the internationally recognized Trail Class system of 1-5.

Here’s a breakdown of how the difficulty of Philippine hiking destinations is assessed:

Minor Hike 

Hiking destinations that can be accomplished within a day without extraordinary physical effort and take a maximum of 5 hours from the jump-off point to the summit are considered “Minor.” A good example of this is the Mt. Maculot-Rockies day hike.

Take note though that even if a trail can be hiked within a day, if it takes more than 5 hours, it is already considered “Major.” An example of this is the Mt. Makiling/Sto. Tomas-Los Baños Traverse (locally called “MakTrav”), which is a day hike that can sometimes take up to 8 hours depending on the weather.

This is an internationally recognized scale that describes the type of terrain that hikers can expect on a specific trail.

Trail Class 1

An easy stroll on a well-established trail (Ex. Taytay Falls)

Trail Class 2

Rugged paths with somewhat steep slopes (Ex. Mt. Pulag via Ambangeg hike)

Trail Class 3

Moderately steep terrain that may require scrambling (Ex. Mt. Makiling Traverse)

Trail Class 4

Very steep slopes and easy cliffs in which beginners must be roped (Ex. Mt. Apo via Kidapawan)

Trail Class 5

Highly difficult and technical trails wherein ropes are required, as well as free hands as a climbing method (Ex. Mt. Guiting-Guiting)

Take note that most climbs involve a combination of trail classes, the more prevalent trail class is put first. For example, Mt. Apo via Kidapawan is a Trail Class 2-4, and the hike to Mt. Pulag via Ambangeg is Trail Class 1-2.

The Pinoy Mountaineer difficulty rating is a numerical scale of 1-9, with 1 as the easiest and 9 as the most difficult. Although this classification system is only recognized in the Philippines, it gives hikers a good idea of how difficult a climb is by comparing one mountain with another.

1/9 Difficulty

Minor hikes that are Trail Class 1. These trails often have paved pathways and are very easy to navigate. It takes less than an hour to complete these trails. Examples:

2/9 Difficulty

Major hikes with Trail Class 5 and highly technical and perilous trail features. These hikes take more than 8 hours and typically require an average of 4 days to complete, or less than 3 days if it is an exploratory hike with no assurance of reaching the summit.

This level requires intense physical and mental preparation and should only be attempted by advanced or veteran hikers. Examples:

Mt. Mantalingajan, Palawan

Weather is an important factor to consider when planning a hike. This is particularly crucial in the Philippines where the tropical climate can cause varying weather disturbances that can make an easy trail into a difficult and dangerous one. 

Tropical weather can sometimes be unpredictable; experiencing scattered rain showers is not uncommon when hiking in the Philippines, nor is experiencing a downpour for an hour and then witnessing bright and sunny skies the next.

To be prepared, keep an eye out for weather outlook and forecasts. Tools such as Accuweather come in handy when planning a hike.

Taking note of monthly general weather conditions in the Philippines can also help. November through February are typically cold and dry seasons, while it is generally hot and dry from March to April. On the other hand, typhoon season runs from May through October.

Trails that require more than multiple days of hiking usually have water sources where hikers can replenish their bottles. 1 liter can generally last for 2 hours if the weather isn’t too hot or humid. Assuming that the average interval between water sources is 4 hours, bringing at least 3 liters of water to see you through the next water source.

Hiking Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts 

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced hiker, make sure to practice the following do’s and don'ts when hiking in the mountains to show respect not just to nature but to your fellow hikers. 

Practice “Leave No Trace” Principle

Always pick up after yourself. Don’t throw your garbage along the trails or in your campsite. Keep a trash bag in your backpack and store your trash there temporarily. Make sure that you’re not dropping plastic wrappers from your trail food, or leaving empty water bottles, used tissues, etc. Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs. 

Stay on the Trail

Don’t stray from the established trail nor try to take another path, as this necessarily damages the surrounding plants. Additionally, don’t cut down trees or damage any vegetation to set up camp. Only pitch tents at dedicated campsites.

As hikers, always aim to make the least impact on the mountains you visit to keep them healthy and to maintain their beauty.

Don’t blast loud music while hiking. This does not disturb only local wildlife, but it also disrespects other mountaineers who prefer to hike in silence or listen to the sounds of nature. Use your earphones if listening to music helps you hike.

If you see any hiker encountering some kind of difficulty along the trail assist them as much as you can. If a fellow hiker ran out of trail food and you have more to spare, offer it to him/her. What comes around goes around.

Always give way to locals who are going about their daily lives. If you are descending, give way to hikers who are going uphill. Additionally, if your pace is slow, make way for fast-moving hikers. Similarly, if you are fast,  politely ask slow-moving hikers for permission to advance on the trail. 

Be Nice to Your Local Guides and Treat them with Respect

Introduce yourself to the guide and make your guide feel like a part of your group. Invite them during socials, and offer them food and water. If your guide is moving too fast and way ahead of the team, politely ask him/her to slow down. Additionally, if you ask the guide to act as a porter, make sure to give extra compensation.

There are some people who visit mountains that are mysterious and mystical, relative to their belief and religion. Whatever your reason is, I'm sure you'll find the right mountain to climb.

The Bagobo tribes of Mindanao have called this mountain “Apo,” meaning grandfather. It is the highest peak in the Philippines, with a height of 2,954 meters, situated in Davao del Sur. It is an already dormant volcano that has three major summits and a wide volcanic crater containing the crystal clear Lake Venado. It provides a difficult scale for climbers because of its thick mossy forests, steep trails, and giant rock boulders. Sulphur vents and deposits can also be seen throughout the area – a silent reminder of Mount Apo’s volcanic past. It is also a home of the Philippine Monkey-eating Eagle, the world’s largest eagle and the country’s national bird.

In June 1991, people witnessed the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. It destroyed the summit of Mount Pinatubo and from 1,745 meters, it now stands at 1,486 meters. It is located at the intersection of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga and has been a major tourist destination since the 1991 eruption. Although it unleashed a huge expanse of terror and destruction, its past outburst made the land around it more fertile. Today, valleys of ash can still be seen on the way to this mountain.

The villagers of Cordillera call it the “Playground of the Gods”. The 2,930-meter-high Mount Pulag is the third highest mountain in the Philippines and the highest peak in Luzon. Its land area covers portions of Benguet, Ifugao, and Nueva Viscaya, and it is considered as the center of the Igorot tribal culture. It is a popular tourist destination because of its close proximity to Baguio. It takes at least three hours to climb to the top, but the travel experience is very rewarding. This mountain lets people experience three types of vegetation – a pine forest at the bottom, a mossy forest in the middle, and vast grasslands at the summit which provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Cordillera. Mount Daguldol, Batangas

Mount Mariveles, Bataan

Behold Tourist Spots in Mountain Province

1. mt. amuyao.

Mt. Amuyao in Barlig rises to more than 2, 702-2,862 MASL, making it one of the highest peaks in the Philippines. Thick mossy and pine forests cover the mountain slopes, providing a haven for endemic and endangered species such as deer, wild pigs, cloud rats, and civet cats.

While atop, one can have a panoramic view of the mountain ranges of Sadanga, Sagada, Bontoc, Bauko, as well as the provinces of Kalinga and Ifugao. The distant plains of Cagayan Valley are also visible.

During the early morning, a breathtaking sea of clouds occasionally appears. Stunning views of sunrise and sunset best complement these. Mt. Amuyao remains one of the most popular hiking tourist spots in Mountain Province.

2. Mt. Binaratan 

Mt. Binaratan in Maducayan, Natonin boasts of pristine ecological wonders. Dipterocarp and mossy forests cover its slopes. These host various species of endangered wildlife species such as hornbill, and monkeys. According to locals, Mt. Binaratan’s summit is devoid of any bird’s sounds.

Legend says that when Kabunian descended on Mt Binaratan to hunt, he was disturbed by the chirping of the birds. He then ordered them to keep silent. Until today, one can barely hear of birds’ chirp though you can see them flying around.

It takes around six to seven hours to reach the peak of the mountain from Maducayan village. It measures around 1,800 MASL. This remains, however, to be one of the least known tourist spots in Mountain Province.

3. Mabarotbot Boiling Mud 

These are pools of bubbling mud found in barangay Bantay in Paracelis. According to legends, the pools are the remnants of a sunken village. Thus, the locals believe that they are inhabited by unseen spirits/deities. These stories portray the richness of Mountain Province culture.

A government study, however, showed that the bubbling properties of the mud are caused by methane.

To get here, one needs to hop on a ride for about an hour from the town center and later on, take a few minutes’ walk from the road.

4. Fowa-as Falls 

Considered as the highest in Sadanga, Fowa-as falls cascades on a very wide and deep pool for more than 75 meters. The falls is named after a local farmer named Fuwaas.

According to a story, Fuwaas was fixing an irrigation dike above the falls when he accidentally fell down. Surprisingly, he managed to survive and the falls was named in remembrance of him.

The trail leading to Fowa-as falls cuts across beautifully-carved rice terraces. The waters are icy-cold and crystal-clear. Beautiful and gigantic rock formations provide a more stunning view of Fowa-as falls.

Today, it is one of the most tourist spots in Mountain Province.

5. Maligcong Rice Terraces 

Nestled high up in the mountains, Maligcong Rice Terraces showcase the brilliant engineering skills, industry, hard work, and unity of the locals’ ancestors.

The adjacent Mt Kupapey provides the best view of these terraces. From here, the Maligcong Terraces appear like circular and winding cascades.

Springs and creeks emanating from the same mountain also irrigate the terraces all year round. The best time to view them is during the early morning.

Apart from the stunning sunrise, a breathtaking sea of clouds often forms and casts a dramatic view of Maligcong Rice Terraces. It is now one of the most famous tourist spots in Bontoc, Mountain Province.

6. Mt. Kalawitan 

Mt Kalawitan rises to more than 2, 714 MASL. It is also one of the highest peaks in the Philippines. The primary jump-off point is Apa Camp Site of Sabangan.

However, some hikers take the trailhead from Talubin, Bontoc. Nevertheless, both trails offer rewarding sceneries of the mountains and forests.

While atop, one can gaze on mountain views of Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, and the distant Cagayan Valley. The similarly-imposing Mt Amuyao can also be seen here.

To reach the summit, you will be hiking across pine and mossy forests. Bamboo grasses also abound. The mountain depicts a part of Mountain Province history.

7. Tagpeo Falls

Tagpeo falls is located between the boundary of Besao in Mountain Province and the municipality of Tubo in Abra. It cascades on a massive rock cliff to a small and shallow catch basin below.

It is around 80 meters high. If you are coming from barangay Aguid, you will need to hike for more than five hours to reach the falls.

Expect to walk on dense forests but certainly, the rustic view of the mountains are rewarding. If you follow the brook upstream, several other waterfalls are also found.

8. Paradise Falls

Paradise falls cascades like heavenly-drizzles from the heavens. You might be wondering why it is named as such. It is one of the iconic tourist spots in Bauko, Mountain Province.

Well, according to the tourism officer, one feels like in paradise upon visiting the falls. Indeed, the pine-scented breeze wafting around and the caressing mists that the falls exude make it a perfect getaway for nature lovers and adventurers.

Paradise falls measures more than 30 meters high. It has small pools, fit for swimming. Oh, do stand by the base of the falls and let it give you a shower you will never forget.

9. Mt. Mog-ao

Mt. Mog-ao stands majestically amidst the rolling plains, making it one of the popular tourist spots in Tadian, Mountain Province. It is a visible landmark in almost every barangay.  While on top, one can glimpse of the breathtaking views of Sunny Side, adjacent Bauko, and the municipalities of Quirino and Cervantes in Ilocos Sur province.

The historic and mighty Abra River is also visible from the summit. If you are viewing from barangay Pandayan, Mt Mogao resembles the shape of a “Sleeping Lady.”

10. Siblaw Taraw Lake 

This moss-covered lake is sheer beauty of enchantment. Nestled high on the mountains, Siblaw Taraw conjures fascinating tales of maidens bathing on its pool.

At first sight, it looks like a mossy lawn. But when you remove the moss, you will see crystal-clear waters hidden underneath. Beautiful mossy forests also surround the lake.

The best time to visit is during the early morning. This is when the sun’s rays strike the lake and cast a mystifying view. You would feel like you are on a time standing still.

To get here, you need to hike for more or less two hours from sitio Pennantiw at barangay Lingoy. If you are coming from barangay Latang, the hike takes more or less four hours.

11. Humuyyo Falls 

Humuyyo falls is considered as the tallest waterfall in Bontoc, measuring more than 40 meters high. Its icy-cold waters come from the mossy forests upstream.

The falls has no pools for swimming. So, visitors can simply position at its base while its waters provide a soothing massage. This is a perfect locals’ getaway since it is just near the capital town of Bontoc, Mountain Province.

12. Enchanted Eels 

These mystical creatures continue to attract the interests of tourists and travelers. They are found on springs at barangays Cagubatan and Lenga. The locals consider them sacred, believing that they are connected to the spirit world.

One story tells of a local who tried poisoning the eels but his attempt did not take effect. He died afterwards. The eels are said to be choosy. They only come out for viewing with the use of a whistle or bait. Their length of exposure also depends on the person watching them.

13. Angoten Cave

This uncharted cave is named after Angoten who got lost inside and found his way to Sagada. Angoten cave feeds a river leading to Fuwaas Falls.

Inside, one can find beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations. Only a limited portion of the cave is explored by the locals.

To get here, you need to hike for about an hour from the community of Belwang. You will be trailing on an irrigation canal and upon reaching the river, expect to climb over and jump across big boulders before you can finally see the entrance of Angoten Cave.

14. Mainit Hot Spring 

These steamy hot springs are a popular getaway of the locals and even a growing number of tourists. Their sulfuric waters provide the therapeutic healing effect to those who dip on them.

To date, there are two resorts catering to those who want to stay overnight. These hot springs depict the presence of volcanic mountains around barangay Mainit.

Definitely, proper marketing would lead this as one of the premium tourist spots in Mountain Province.

15. Natonin Rice Terraces 

Natonin hosts the longest and most extensive rice terraces in the country. Among its locally-known terraces are those found in Apatan, Lamayen, and Tonglayan.

Mount To-or, a small forested hill, provides the best views of these. Unlike the famous terraces of Banaue or Maligcong, Natonin’s terraces are built on gentle slopes.

Numerous brooks from the mountains irrigate these terraces all year round. They are also visible all along the national highway traversing Natonin from barangay Banao to Poblacion.

16. Mapesak Falls

Mapesak is one of the most pristine yet least known falls in Mountain Province. It is located deep in the ancestral forests of Lias. It has two layers, however, only the first layer is readily visible upon reaching the site.

Due to its strong water volume, it created a wide and very deep pool which reflects the dense forests around.

To get here, you need to hike on hunter’s trails for more than a day. Along the way, you will catch sight of the diverse flora and fauna of Lias including the critically-endangered Rafflesia flowers and giant lauan trees.

The surrounding brooks and river teem with marine species especially chalet (river eels).

17. Pongas Falls

Pongas falls is one of the off-beaten tourist spots in Sagada, Mountain Province. It is a twin falls with small pockets of pools. The falls measures around 40 meters high. To get here, one needs to hike for about an hour from the community proper.

The trail passes along rice terraces, an irrigation canal, and forested vegetation. Yes, the trail presents challenges, thus, extra care and endurance are entailed.

But don’t fret, the trail offers rewarding sceneries before you can finally glimpse of majestic Pongas Falls.

18. Bontoc Museum 

What are the arts and crafts of Mountain Province? That’s something you’ll know when visiting the Bontoc Museum.

Bontoc Museum showcases the authentic and diverse culture of the different tribes of Mountain Province including those of Ifugao, Kalinga, and Abra.

It houses various artifacts, old photos, weaving materials, farming tools, indigenous armaments such as spears, and many more. There is also an outdoor display of Bontoc’s native houses, built out of cogon grass and stonewalls.

If you are looking for a souvenir, they have a shop selling personalized t-shirts, necklaces, and beads, including books and photos. This is one of the best places to glimpse ancient Mountain Province products.

• Opening Time: 8:00 am -5:00pm (Mon-Sat), 3:30 pm-5:00pm (Sun)

19. Lake Angtadan 

Lake Angtadan lies atop a mountain covered with mossy forests. These forests shelter numerous species of flowering plants and orchids as well as endemic fauna species.

To get here, one needs to hike for five to six hours from barangay Bekigan.

Trails are not yet fully established. Only a few hunters and locals are able to glimpse of its beauty. This lake also feeds a brook leading to barangay Saclit, providing water for its rice terraces.

This is one of the remotest tourist spots in Mountain Province.

20. Mt. Polis

Considered as the most popular hiking destination in Bauko, Mt Polis renders a breathtaking view of the municipalities of Sagada, Sabangan, and Bontoc in Mountain Province.

Beautiful rice terraces and gigantic mountains can also be seen here.

To get to its summit, one needs to trek for about an hour from the road. During the early morning, an entrancing sea of cloud formations occasionally appears.

To date, the mountain is among the fast-rising tourist spots in Mountain Province.

Mount Apo is the most prominent and highest mountain in the Philippines with an elevation of 2,954 meters above sea level.  It has three peaks with the southwest peak having the highest elevation and is topped by a wide crater containing a small lake.  While it is classified as dormant stratovolcano, Mount Apo has actually no known historical eruptions despite the presence of volcanic rocks and volcano craters (solfataras) in the area.

Mount Apo, also called Apo Sandawa , is a national park and a protected area considering the hundreds of species of flora and fauna inhabiting this imposing mountain.  It is home to the critically endangered Philippine eagle , the national bird of the Philippines.  Over 200 bird species of birds, 111 of those are endemic to the area, also inhabit the mountain.

The mountain has four major lakes, 19 major rivers, 21 creeks, waterfalls, 2 geothermal plants, and 2 hydropower plants.  Conquering Mount Apo is probably every mountain climber’s dream but is best explored by experienced mountaineers and hikers only due to its elevation and difficulty.  Hiking the mountain takes 3 to 4 days roundtrip.

How to get to mount apo.

There are several trails leading to Mount Apo – Kapatagan Trail, Talomo Trail, and Sibulan Trail are accessible via Davao while Kidapawan Trail, New Israel Trail, and Bongolanon Trail can be reached via North Cotabato.

Via Sibulan Trail

Sibulan Trail is the shortest and said to be the most scenic. The entry point is Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur

Step 1 Book a flight to Davao City from your current location via Cebu Pacific Air, Philippine Airlines, and AirAsia. These commercial airlines have multiple direct flights to Davao City from Manila and Cebu everyday. Cebu Pacific also flies to Davao from Puerto Princesa and Iloilo at least once a day.

Step 2 Depending on your flight schedule and your itinerary, you can either stay for a night in Davao City or proceed to Santa Cruz upon arrival in Davao.

From the airport, you can reach Santa Cruz by riding a metered taxi found outside the terminal as they are cheaper than the taxis found at the exit. One way ride costs not less than P700 and travel time is around two hours.

Alternatively, you can also take a taxi to Ecoland Terminal where you can ride a bus or shuttle to Santa Cruz.

Step 3 Upon arriving in Santa Cruz Terminal, ride a motorcycle or tricycle to get to the municipal tourism office where you will register, get a permit, pay the required fees, and meet up with your guide. It is best to find a guide at least two days before your arrival in Davao so you have someone to help you arrange your itinerary and other things needed for the hike.

Via Kapatagan Trail

Kapatagan Trail is considered the longest trail to Mount Apo. The entry point is Digos City.

Step 2 Depending on your flight schedule or itinerary, you can either stay a night in Davao CIty or proceed to Digos City upon arrival in Davao.

From the airport, the fastest and most convenient way to get to Digos City is through a taxi ride. However, it costs higher so if you are on a tight budget, consider taking a bus from Ecoland Terminal. Travel time from Davao City to Digos City is around one hour and 30 minutes.

Step 3 Get off at Digos Terminal and take a van to Kapatagan where you will register, pay required fees, and arrange guides and other things needed for the hike.

Via Kidapawan Trail

It is best to be in Kidapawan at least a day before your scheduled hike.

Step 2 From Francisco Bangoy International Airport, ride a taxi to take you to Ecoland Terminal which is approximately 12 kilometers away. Fare should be around P400 ($8 USD).

At the terminal, take a bus via Mindanao Star or Davao Metro Shuttle. The first trip of Mindanao Star is at 3:00 AM and the last trip is at 8:00 PM with 30 minutes trip interval. Meanwhile with Davao Metro Shuttle, the first trip is at 6:00 AM and the last trip is at 9:00 PM with 15 minutes interval. Fare is between P150 to P263 and travel time is about three hours.

Step 3 Proceed to Kidapawan tourism office and pay the climbing fee, guide fee, porter fee, and others. It is best to contact the tourism office prior to your schedule so they can arrange your guide, transportation, and others.

Francisco Bangoy International Airport (IATA: DVO), the airport closest to Mount Apo, is located less than 150 kilometers away from Mount Apo Natural Park.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit this attraction to avoid crowds is early in the morning, usually before 10:00 AM.

This attraction is closed from June to August .

Fees require payment in cash.  Credit cards are not accepted at this attraction.

Northern Mindanao seeks to draw adventure travelers through mountain tourism

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – Northern Mindanao tourism officials are banking on the natural wonders and rich biodiversity of mountains in the region to draw adventure travelers.

Department of Tourism Region 10 (DOT-10) Director Marie Elaine Unchuan said that the number of protected areas in the region has inspired the regional DOT office to launch mountain tourism as part of a circuit of tourism activities in the region.

“Mountain tourism is the latest addition to the products of DOT-10 which has introduced farm, dive, faith, and cultural tourism in the region,” Unchuan said.

Unchuan said that before the mainstreaming of the climb tourism, local government units in the region have to put in place frameworks to set the rules.

The Camiguin provincial government, for example, has joined hands with DOT-10 to promote mountain tourism in the province, the home of  Mount Timpoong and Mount Hibok-Hibok.

The Mount Timpoong-Hibok-Hibok Natural Monument  was included in the roster of ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHPs) in 2016. 

Of the 8 AHPs in the country, 3 can be found in Northern Mindanao. The others are the Mount Kitanglad Natural Park in Bukidnon, and the Mount Malindang Range Natural Park in Misamis Occidental. 

According to the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, AHPs “are selected protected areas in the ASEAN region which are known for their unique biodiversity and ecosystems, wilderness, and outstanding values” and “were given the highest recognition because of their importance as conservation areas.

Mount Timpoong is 1,500 meters above sea level while Mount Hibok-Hibok is 1,200 meters above sea level.

On March  23, local authorities organized an inaugural climb  to the summit of Mount Hibok-Hibok in Camiguin, via a new trail. More than 20 people joined the climb, which started at the base camp at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Office in Barangay Itum, Mambajao.

Experienced mountaineers from across the country were joined by foreign and local social media influencers. The base camp is between Mount Hibok-Hibok and Mount Timpoong.

Based on a handout from the  provincial government, the trail transitions from deciduous to mossy forest at 900 meters above sea level, then passes by a landslide area where one can find mushrooms and sulfur vents.

At 1,100 meters, climbers will come across a pandan forest and red ferns, as well as a  also a huge vent.

The recommended stop is 3 hours into the climb for a panoramic view. The trail then traverses into the old crater with huge boulders and sulfur vents.

There will be a steep ascent to reach the minor peak of Mount Hibok-Hibok. Hikers will enter a pygmy forest and have a view of several mountain peaks in the horizon.

Nearing the peak, there will be more pygmy forests with wildflowers and endemic pitcher plants. The summit is the crown of Mount Hibok-Hibok with panoramic views.

‘Ready for tourists’

Photographer and adventurer Rhonson Ng said that the climb was invigorating. “The trail was beautiful as it is still covered in moss, unlike other mountains which are now almost barren,” Ng said.

Carina Dayondon , fresh from her Seven Summits climb, also took time to join other climbers.  “Mount Hibok-Hibok is one of the requirements in joining the Xavier University Mountaineering Society, this is the second mountain I climbed when I started to become a mountaineer,” Dayondon recalled.

Dayondon, who hailed from Bukidnon, is the first Filipina to conquer the 7 highest peaks in 7 continents.

Mambajao Mayor Jurdin Jesus Romualdo asked the climbers to help spread the word about Camiguin’s mountains. “Wherever you go, please speak about Camiguin and be our spokespersons to promote Camiguin and help us in our conservation of this beautiful province…. We are ready for tourists  to come,” he said.

Opportunities during closure

Prospective trekkers to the Camiguin mountains would have to wait, however, as the trails would be closed until August this year due to El Niño, according to DENR’s Roberto Rufino, head of Protected Wildlife in the island. 

Rufino said that the DOT and the provincial government are already aware of the closure as a preemptive measure to protect the mountains during the dry months.

Unchuan said that the permit for the inaugural climb in March had been already issued before the closure of the mountain trail was ordered.

She said the closure period would provide “an opportunity to fine tune legislations for the mountain tourism.”

“Legislations should be in place, and communities must be involved in this,” Unchuan said.

Camiguin officials, for their part, gave their assurance that they have safeguards in place to protect their mountains for tourists once the trails are open to trekkers.

Camiguin Governor Maria Lourdes Romualdo said that they have trained mountain guides and rangers to protect the environment.

“No moutaineer will go up without local guides,” Romualdo said.

Veteran mountaineer Dr Gideon Lasco of pinoymountaineering.com, who was part of the March 23 climb, said that development must also take into consideration preserving the natural resources of Camiguin.

“The need to protect the mountains is a very valid motivation to take care of the environment. But we who climb mountains, and all our friends, have the opportunity to promote a different kind of motivation to protect the mountains, and that is because we love them,” Lasco said.   – Rappler.com

Sustainable Mountain Tourism – Opportunities for Local Communities ( Executive Summary )

For many rural mountain communities, tourism is a lifeline, contributing in particular to SDGs 1, 2 and 8.

However, mountain tourism can also negatively affect fragile mountain ecosystems, endanger biodiversity, fail to ensure local people benefit from revenues, and even threaten the identity of mountain communities themselves.

In anticipation of the return of large numbers of visitors to mountains after the COVID-19 pandemic, consideration must be given to reducing environmental impacts, including by addressing tourist-generated plastic waste, and ensuring sustainable tourism, such as by developing a year-round tourism destination in mountains as climate crisis shortens snow seasons.

The world’s mountains have long attracted visitors for their scenic beauty, sports opportunities and rich cultural heritage. And for many rural mountain communities, tourism is a lifeline. However, mountain tourism can also come at a cost.

Tourism can increase household incomes, enhance job opportunities and revitalize local traditions. By doing so, it contributes to many of the Sustainable Development Goals , including those on poverty (SDG 1), hunger (SDG 2) and decent work (SDG 8). This is especially important when we consider that one in every two rural mountain people in developing countries are at risk of hunger.

But when poorly managed, tourism can negatively affect fragile mountain ecosystems, endanger biodiversity, fail to ensure local people benefit from revenues, and even threaten the identity of mountain communities themselves.

Developing a year-round tourism destination in mountains is increasingly vital as climate change shortens the snow seasons.

COVID-19 has hit the tourism industry like a seismic shock. Before the pandemic, mountain tourism accounted for up to a fifth of tourism worldwide. In 2020, international tourist numbers declined by 74% globally, and mountain destinations that relied on international visitors have suffered serious economic losses. But the joint study ‘ Mountain tourism – Towards a more sustainable path ’ by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Mountain Partnership Secretariat suggests that the pandemic has also presented us with an opportunity to rethink mountain tourism.

Helping mountain regions to recover from the COVID-19 crisis requires actions in the short and longer term that extend beyond the tourism sector. It is our urgent responsibility to rebuild the industry more sustainably and equitably, in ways that provide long-term benefits for mountain peoples and their environments.

Many governments have responded quickly to support tourism recovery. Most countries have adopted economy-wide stimulus packages, along with job support measures. Georgia, for example, announced that property and income taxes for companies in the tourism sector will be deferred, and banks will restructure debts for individuals and companies operating in the tourism industry.

We also need to transform our agrifood systems to be more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable, for improved livelihoods and to ensure that local communities are fully engaged in, and benefit from, mountain tourism. In particular, mountain destinations need to innovate and diversify to attract new markets as tourism emerges from the shadow of the pandemic.

Developing a year-round tourism destination in mountains can generate additional income, and is increasingly vital as the impacts of the climate crisis are reducing the lengths of the snow seasons. Mountains have much more to offer than snow sports in winter and hiking in summer. Archaeological, cultural and spiritual sites, picturesque villages, thermal baths, specialty products and gastronomy trails, and rare species of plants and animals all represent opportunities to diversify tourism. 

The Philippines’ Cordillera region is a good example. The country’s Department of Tourism, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and Slow Food launched a project in the area in 2018 to connect tourism service providers to small-scale producers, helping visitors to discover high-quality mountain products such as heirloom rice, while boosting the income of mountain communities.

At the same time, we cannot ignore that climate change will likely increase the frequency of natural hazards such as floods and landslides. Strengthening crisis management capacities and health and safety standards will be critical to build the long-term resilience of mountain communities and the mountain tourism sector. 

In addition, in anticipation of the return of large numbers of visitors to mountains, consideration must be given to reduce environmental impacts and ensure sustainable tourism. This includes addressing the large quantities of tourist-generated plastic waste in mountains, which causes harm to the health of animals, humans and ecosystems. The recent UN-supported Mountain Waste Survey confirmed that plastic waste is found even in remote areas, such as the Himalaya Summits. Working towards eliminating single-use plastic products across the tourism industry is of key importance.

Finally, we need to ensure that tourism fosters respect and protection for the natural and spiritual heritage of mountains, and the cultural diversity and traditional practices of mountain communities.

We have a collective responsibility to make ethical travel choices, to expect wellbeing destinations and tourism businesses to be environmentally conscious, and to hold them accountable if they are not. Sustainable mountain tourism is the theme of this year’s International Mountain Day observed annually on 11 December.

For sustainable mountain tourism to prosper, urgent measures are required to ensure that nobody is left behind. This means supporting the vulnerable groups in mountains, including women, youth and Indigenous Peoples, who are the custodians of these majestic yet fragile environments from which we all benefit. The sustainable management of mountains will support better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life for all, and contribute to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Montalban Rizal is just a few hours away from Metro Manila making it an ideal backpacking destination for those who want to have a weekend of fresh air and escape the hustle and bustle of city life. A first-class municipality, Rodriguez has become a sort of "dormitory" for Metro Manila because of its proximity to the capital city. 312.70 sq. km., but only 5, 346 hectares of urban land from aggregate soil in seven lowland barangays, making it one of the most unusual urban settlements in the Philippines.

Tourists from neighboring towns and those from further afield are increasingly attracted to the growing number of inland resorts, making this a rapidly expanding industry. Rancho Luisito, with its zipline, big bucket, and waterslides, is a standout, as are Noah's Park's adventurous team-building facilities, Coco Mountain Resort, with its Australian surf camp motif, and Costa Abril, with its wave pool. Located on the banks of the San Mateo River, the convention center is the first of its kind in Rodriguez, Rizal.

The province of Rizal has become a haven for adventurers and mountaineers alike, especially in the town of Rodriguez. Montalban is truly blessed with gorgeous mountains mostly with jagged limestone crags and breath-taking mountaintop vista. There are about fifteen summits and hiking sites in Montalban, making it one of Rizal's most popular and frequently visited mountain hiking destinations near Metro Manila. These mountains may not be as high as many of their Sierra Madre rivals, but that doesn't mean the trails aren't hard.

Here is the list of hiking destinations in Rodriquez (formerly Montalban) in the province of Rizal:

1. MT. BINICAYAN

Elevation: 424+ MASL

Difficulty: 3/9

Location: Brgy. San Rafel, Montalban Rizal

Depending on your pace, the hike to the top will take you between 1.5 and 2 hours.  The hike is only 2.3 kilometers long, but the ascent and descent will take around 3 hours if you take your time and enjoy the scenery. The ascent and descent are both extremely steep, necessitating the use of proper trekking footwear. It's a good idea to have a pair of hand gloves because the rocks can be very sharp. Your Instagram feed will be awe-inspiring from the summit, especially if you climb early enough to catch a sea of clouds against the sunrise. 

This is a recommended mountain for beginners because it's not too difficult to climb. If you enjoy scaling rocky outcrops, this hike is for you. This is usually part of the trilogy trek (Mt. Binicayan, Mt. Pamitinan, and Mt. Hapunang Banoi). To have the best view of the sea of clouds at the summit, it is best to start trekking early in the morning. This mountain's features are its unusual rock formations and the thick fog near the peak. In the wet season, the trail becomes treacherous and requires a certain amount of maneuverability.

There is a 50 PHP entry charge per individual. The guide costs 500 PHP for a group of five. 

There are no water sources along the trail, so be prepared and make sure to bring extra drinking water.

How to get to Mt. Binicayan:

Travel to Eastwood Subdivision in Quezon City by taking the UV Express Van from Gateway Mall Cubao and getting off at the Ministop branch in front of the building. It costs around P50 via van ride. To go to the DENR Registration area, take a tricycle to Sitio Wawa and get off at that stop. This mountain is sometimes called Mt. Binacayan.

2. MT. PAMITINAN

Elevation: 426+ MASL

Location: Brgy. San Rafael, Montalban Rizal

The Pamitinan Protected Landscape, according to historians, served as a protected area because of its historical significance as a secret haven for the Katipuneros during the Spanish era. Historians claim that Andres Bonifacio uttered the first battle cry of Revolution inside the Pamitinan Cave at So. Wawa, Brgy. San Rafael, Rodriguez, Rizal.

Aside from its historical significance, PPL is also popularly known to spelunkers and cave enthusiasts because of its two popular caves - the Pamitinan Cave and Bat Cave. During summer, the Bat Cave becomes an interesting site for tourists who wish to trek across it. The Bat Cave boasts hundreds of stalactites and stalagmites and numerous ring stone dams that enthrall tourists and enthusiasts alike.

The PPL is also known for its ancient rock formations; Some of the Kinabuan, Angat, and Madlum. Some of the rocks were believed to be about 135 million years old. At the Kinabuan Rock Formation, the rocks are made of volcanic basalt and intrusive gabbro believed to have been formed during the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era around 70 - 135 million years ago. Meanwhile, the Angat Formation which existed as early as the Miocene Period of the Cenozoic Era dates about 20 - 25 million years ago. Lastly, The Madlum Formation, well known for Buenacop Limestone, dates back to the late Miocene age formed about 5 - 11 million years ago.

3. MT. LAGYO

Elevation: 396 MASL

Mt. Lagyo is usually paired with Mt. Susong Dalaga if you are doing a twin hike. This mountain features rock-climbing trails same as Mt. Pamintinan and Mt. Binacayan. The rocks are very sharp so you have to prepare gloves to protect your hands. 

If you want to try more exciting trilogy hike, you can do Mt. Parawagan (grassland) + Mt. Lagyo (rockies) + Mt. Suso ng Dalaga (grassland).

Popular side trip when climbing Mt. Lagyo is El Rancho Trail and Natural Spring . Go to Barangay San Rafael then just ask for directions going to "Sitio Lagyo". Turn left if you are in Acacia going to Mt. Lagyo. It is approximately 30 mins trail/walk from Ka Andres Store. Ask for directions on where you can find El Rancho. 

4. MT. HAPUNANG BANOY

(sometimes spelled as Mt. Hapunang Banoi)

Elevation: 517+ MASL

Difficulty: 4/9

Location: Brgy. Mascap, Montalban Rizal

It is well-known for its stunning rock and limestone formations, which blend seamlessly with the dense forest's diverse array of greenery. The Sierra Madre Mountains may be seen from this perch. The "older sibling" of Mt. Pamitinan and Mt. Binacayan, Mt. Hapunang Banoy (Banoi) is much more difficult, higher, and takes a lot longer to hike. The trail to Mt. Pamitinan follows the same route as the one from Mt. Banoy until you reach the junction where you must turn left (turn right is to Pamitinan). The rocky trails are dotted with bamboo groves. The view deck on the observation deck offers a stunning vantage point.

In most cases, Mt. Hapunang Banoi and either Mt. Pamitinan or Mt. Binacayan can be ascended as a twin hike. The sequential hike might be recommended by your tour guide if you indicate your interest in it prior to the hike. You'll of course, have to pay an additional fee for this. 

5. MT. PARAWAGAN

Elevation: 462 MASL

Mt. Parawagan is one of Rodriguez, Rizal's most demanding and beautiful mountain hikes. Brgy. San Rafael is located on the western side of Sitio Wawa and has a route that leads to the trailhead in Sitio Parawagan. Views of tiny streams, mixed forests, the Sierra Madre Mountains and the rolling green greenery along the trail's sides will greet you. You'll be able to see the La Mesa Dam Reservoir and Makati's skyline from a distance of about 6 kilometers.

If you're searching for a beginner-friendly hiking experience, this might be the spot for you.  It features one of the most straightforward routes, making it perfect for trail running. The good news is that the views from this easy hike are on par with the breathtaking views found on the tougher ones.

You'll be able to see the entire area from the summit, which is completely free of obstructions.

6. MT. MATAMIS NA LUYA

(Also called Mt. Purro)

Elevation:  545MASL

Difficulty: Minor, 5/9, 4-6 hours (ascending), Trail Class 1-3

Location: Brgy. San Rafael / Puray, Montalban Rizal

Also called Mt. Purro. This mountain offers a wide variety of flora and fauna. The adventure involves 11.5-hour trek, 8 river crossings, and rafting. The trail is mostly exposed with some loose soil and cogon grass. Narra and bamboo trees are also common along the trail. The descending trail sometimes has loose soil and rocks with streams along the way. Common wildlife are cows, goats, chicken, swift and crows but there are no limatiks.

You can have a view of Marikina, Anipolo, Tanay, Rodriguez, Rizal and General Nakar Mountain Ranges. It is recommended to wear sun protection - sleeves and gloves can be helpful. There are no campsite here. Always pass thru the required registration and secure guides. You may need special permission as this mountain is protected.

7. MT. AYAAS

Elevation: 627+ MASL

One hour from Manila, Mt. Ayaas is a convenient location to explore. From the summit of Mt. Ayaas, 627 meters above sea level, one can see the Sierra Madre and its adjacent peaks, such as Mt. Pamitinan, Mt. Binacayan, and Mt. Hapunang Banoi.  It is a gateway to the vast Sierra Madre mountain range that hikers cannot miss.

On the journey to the summit of Mt. Ayaas, you'll pass through rivers, deep forests, and open grasslands. While the mountain is suitable for novices because of its gentle slopes, it gradually becomes more challenging as you ascend the mountain. Hikers may rest at the summit and marvel in the surrounding mountains from the peak. 

Mt. Ayaas is the only non-limestone formation-type mountain among the Montalban Pentalogy (Mts. Pamitinan, Binacayan, Hapunang Banoi, Sipit Ulang, and Ayaas). This mountain also has the longest trail among all Montalban mountains.

The trail is mostly ascending with partly-shaded areas. As the heat might cause dehydration, it is recommended for hikers to bring plenty of water. If you're going trekking in the summer, be prepared to hike in the scorching sun all the way to the top.

Elevation: 340+ MASL

This mountain is the latest addition to the so-called Montalban Pentalogy turned Hexalogy. 

Mt. Oro's is known for its exposed trails, with only a few shady spots. If you've climbed Mt. Maynoba, you'll have a good idea of the trail's type.

This mountain's trail is ideal for first-timers because it is not primarily on assault and is only a short distance in total. If you go at a decent pace, you can reach the summit in 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

There are two summits on Mt. Oro, both of which offer a 360-degree view over the Rizal highlands.

9. MT. SIPIT ULANG

Elevation: 252 MASL

Rodriquez, Rizal is home to Mt. Sipit-Ulang. Great rock formations and limestone pathways have made it a popular destination in recent years. It has a grade of 3/9 difficulty and is only a short walk up to 252 MASL. 

For whatever reason, the name "Sipit Ulang" refers to a petrified huge crab's claw that looks to be reaching toward the sky (or crabs claw). This rock's vantage point provided a postcard-worthy view of Mt. Pamitinan, Mt. Binacayan, and Mt. Ayaas, all of which can be seen in the distance from the summit of the rock.

After crossing a small brook, the hike begins in a meadow and gradually ascends. The majority of the trail was surrounded by trees and plants, as well as rocks and narrow rock formations that were both menacing and eerie.

Passing through tight corridors between rocks and crawling up sharp rock formations were a challenge, but the experience of slipping and sliding through these passageways was both amazing and exciting. The variety of rock formations on the trails added to the beauty of the hike.

10. MT. LUBOG

Elevation: 955+ MASL

Location: Brgy. Puray, Montalban Rizal

Mt. Lubog is a very promising dayhike in Rizal. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes of hiking to reach the summit depending on your pace. It’s so much like Mt. Lagyo and other mountains in Montalban because of the limestone. The one thing that sets Mt. Lubog apart from the other hiking destinations in Rodriguez, is the thick forest canopy that provides cover to climbers until one reaches the clearing at the rocky summit.

At 955 MASL, the summit is a wonderful haven of rocks, where hikers can feel perched in one of the gateways to the breathtaking view of the southern Sierra Madre. The summit resembles a labyrinth of boulders and karst formations. This is one of the reasons why the summit of Mt. Lubog is also referred to as "Simbahang Bato".

Side trips include the Lubog Cave and the Panintingan Falls.

11. MT. BALAGBAG

Elevation: 777+ MASL

Location: Brgy. San Isidro, Montalban Rizal

Mt. Balagbag is a popular hiking destination because of its proximity to Metro Manila. It is part of the Sierra Madre Range as it transitions into the lowlands of Central and Southern Luzon. Easy and broad, Mt. Balagbag is also a popular mountain bike destination. Hikers who attempt this trek during the summer will endure primarily exposure to the sun - though locals recall that the peak was once covered with trees - which maybe now lost due to illegal logging. For this reason, dim trekking or early morning or late afternoon hikes are recommended. 

Some tiny waterfalls and rivers may also be seen on the road to Mt. Balagbag in Rodriguez, Rizal, which can also be crossed from San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan or other nearby towns. Aside from hiking, this mountain is also a favorite destination for runners, bikers, and 4x4 wheel enthusiasts. It's a great training venue for them before joining a competition. The trail is also wide so big cars can go up near the helipad.

12. ESPADANG BATO

Elevation: 455 MASL

It's not hard to see why the locals referred to it as Espadang Bato because of its highly pointed shape that resembles a sword. There is no doubt that this peak is one of the most popular in Rodriguez's mountains.

The distance from Barangay Hall of Mascap to this location is roughly 3.6 kilometers. Mount Sipit Ulang's trail forks to the south, about 1.5 kilometers in length, at the junction of the two trails. Espadang Bato may be found just beyond the junction, a prominently protruding limestone rock structure.

With a walk to neighboring mountains, falls, and summits, you can get the most from Espadang Bato. A typical day trek includes a trip to Mount Sipit Ulang and a stop at Payaran Falls as well.

13. MT. SUSONG DALAGA

Elevation: 325 MASL

There are many mountains in the Philippines called Mount Susong Dalaga or Bundok Susong Dalaga, which means "Maiden's Breasts Mountain".

Mount Susong Dalaga is a scenic viewpoint in Rizal situated nearby to Mount Lagyo. This mountain is usually part of the Trilogy hike - Mt. Parawagan + Mt. Lagyo + Mt. Susong Dalaga. 

The initial trails were relatively easy until reaching the grassland which eventually leads to the very steep ascent to its peak. This steep incline would actually make it harder for climbers to reach the summit during the rainy season. Mt. Susong Dalaga has a 70° assault downslope composed of loose soil with ridges on both sides.

Mt. Lagyo and Mt. Binacayan can also be seen at the summit of Mt. Susong Dalaga.

Mt. Susong Dalaga summit is just a small open space with no trees and can only accommodate a small group of hikers at a time.

14. MT. MAL-AC

Also spelled Mt. Malac (Mal-ak)

Elevation:  639+ MASL

Mt Malac is a perfect trail for those looking for a less-traveled mountain to hike, with the reward of a refreshing side trip to waterfalls after. The trail is a combination of grasslands ridges and minor rocky river trekking. Although the trail takes 2-3 hours to the summit, 1.5 hours to the waterfalls, and 2 hours back to the jumpoff, totaling 5.5 to 6.5 hours of walking on sometimes uncovered path, the terrain is pretty easy and can be dared even by persistent beginners. Mount Malac is situated southeast of Mount Cabuan, and north of Mount Caypipili.

The first part of the trail traverses the dry riverbed before starting the assault. The second part of the trail is the first assault with vegetation providing shade to hikers. Some parts of the trail can be characterized by burned grassland due to kaingin.

Some vegetation still served as shade from the scorching heat of the sun at the beginning of the ascent. However, close to the summit, the grassland has dominated the panorama with a few trees here and there.

The usual twin hike combination includes Mt. Macareba + Mt. Mal-ac with a side trip to Puray Falls or Baawan Waterfalls.

Hiking Mt. Mal-ac highlights a breathtaking 360 view of Sierra Madre Mountain with an option to do overnight camp at Mogul Peak.

15. MT. MACAREBA

Elevation:  535+ MASL

This mountain is also one of the less-traveled mountains in Rodriguez, Rizal. The trail is a combination of grasslands, bamboo, and narra covered forest. Trails are very muddy in the wet season. The hike features a view of Sierra Madre (Rizal) Mountain Range and the Manila skyline.

The usual event combination is a day hike to Mt. Macareba plus a side trip to Biting Uhay & Puray Falls. As mentioned above, this mountain is usually paired with Mt. Mal-ac for a twin hike.

Meet The Billionaire Betting Big On An Idyllic Island Retreat In The Philippines

Inside andrew tan's $720 million eco-tourism project in the country’s pristine beachside paradise., by jonathan burgos , forbes staff.

T he pitch is for tropical paradise: turquoise waters that lap a pristine shoreline fringed by lush, mist-streaked greenery. Philippine property giant Megaworld extolls on its Facebook page the virtues of Palawan island, the largest of a 1,780-island group by the same name that hangs to the left of the island nation in the Pacific. Here, Megaworld is pursuing its most complex project yet, a resort and residential estate that will be the island’s biggest real estate development to date.

On 462 hectares in San Vicente, a quiet, relatively untouched corner of Palawan’s northern coast, known for its rich biodiversity, virgin forests, steep karst cliffs and the longest white sand beach in the Philippines, Megaworld has a 15-year plan to raise a township from among the coconut trees—an ecofriendly addition, it says, to its hospitality, office, retail and residential portfolio that spans the country. When finished, Paragua Coastown will include two 10-story hotels, a residential condominium, villas, a hospital, a school, and wellness-related centers.

Megaworld, owned by billionaire Andrew Tan ’s spirits-to-property conglomerate Alliance Global Group, is pouring over 40 billion pesos ($720 million) into the venture—a tenth of what it plans to spend on building townships across the Philippines in the next five years. The company is banking on getting in on the ground floor as the island remakes itself into one of the country’s top tourist destinations. Some 1.5 million people, of which about 650,000 were overseas travelers, visited the island in 2023, nearly twice as many as the previous year, according to government figures, as tourists return to the Philippines post-Covid. (Boracay, the archipelago’s most popular resort island, had over 2 million visitors last year.) “We intend to showcase the best sustainable tourism and green living concepts by developing it into an ecotourism township,” Kevin Tan, Andrew’s eldest son and Megaworld’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer, says by email.

San Vicente is seen as the next frontier in the island’s commercial boom, catching up to Palawan’s other island centers where tourism is flourishing, including its capital, Puerto Princesa City (home to the 8.2-kilometer underground river, a Unesco World Heritage site), and El Nido, a municipality comprised of small islands at Palawan’s northern tip that has in recent years become a playground for backpackers and jetsetters alike. Ayala Land, controlled by billionaire Jaime Zobel de Ayala and his family, has already made inroads as El Nido’s biggest developer, owning the 325-hectare Lio tourism estate along with four other resorts in the town’s smaller islands.

Megaworld broke ground last year on its 306-room Savoy Hotel Palawan and the nearby 189-unit Oceanfront Premier Residences tower, which are both slated to be completed in 2028. Construction of the 313-room Paragua Sands Hotel, which will open in 2029, has yet to start.

Most rooms will have water views, and the hiking trails of the Pagdanan mountain range, home to threatened wildlife such as the Philippine cockatoo, gray imperial pigeon and blue-naped parrot, are a short drive away.

“More than just sustainable tourism, our vision for Paragua Coastown is to be able to provide an opportunity to those who want to live the island life within a lush and sustainable landscape,” Tan says. To that end, he says Megaworld will incorporate solar and other renewable energy sources into its building design. There will be a waste-to-energy plant to supply electricity to the township as part of a new waste-management system and sewage-treatment center.

About 40% of Paragua Coastown’s land area has been earmarked for open (albeit landscaped) spaces, while a mangrove forest reserve in its boundaries will be left untouched. Megaworld also plans to plant thousands of trees on 100 hectares deforested by commercial logging, once a mainstay of the local economy, and upgrade the mostly dirt tracks used by San Vicente's 30,000 residents to a network of roads in and around the property.

Ana Margarita Lustre-Malijan, vice president at local hotelier and construction firmArlustre Group, believes such developments will be a huge boon for Palawan, bringing jobs and income to the island where about 15% of the population falls below the poverty line. It could also be the tipping point to improve accessibility to the area. There’s an airport in San Vicente, but Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific, two of the nation’s main airlines, don’t fly there. Getting to San Vicente means a 90-minute flight from Manila or Cebu to Puerto Princesa and a bumpy four-hour car ride across rugged terrain. Cebu Pacific CEO Michael Szucs tells Forbes Asia that the airline will consider flying to San Vicente once the Megaworld hotels are built.

Besides attracting homegrown developers, Palawan has become a stopping point for international hospitality brands. “Palawan stands out as an attractive destination, blending cultural richness with natural landscapes,” Raj Menon, Marriott’s president for Asia Pacific excluding China, says by email. The U.S. group will add over 70 rooms this year to its recently opened 168-room Four Points by Sheraton on Sabang Beach, near Puerto Princesa’s underground river, to meet demand. American hotel chains Best Western and Wyndham Hotels’ Microtel have also established a presence on the island.

Megaworld has begun marketing the Paragua Coastown residential units, which will range from 32-square-meter studios to 106-square-meter two-bedroom suites, and expects them to generate some 2.3 billion pesos in sales. Doubling down on Palawan, Megaworld announced in December it would spend another 7 billion pesos to develop a mixed-use complex on a 6-hectare oceanfront site in Puerto Princesa. Named Baytown Palawan, the commercial, hotel and residential project is expected to take five years to complete. “Palawan has always been a hotspot for local and international tourists,” Tan says.

BUCKET LIST

International visitors to the Philippines have gradually returned but remain below pre-pandemic levels.

Palawan isn’t the Tans’ only tourism play. They are building resorts, retail space and convention facilities across the archipelago, including tourist hotspots Boracay, Cebu and Davao. Megaworld’s hospitality operations accounted for over 5% of the company’s 2023 revenue of 69.7 billion pesos, and the company expects the business will make up at least 10% of revenue by 2028.

Andrew Tan launched Megaworld in the late 1980s, pioneering the living concept of a city within a city in the Philippines. It now counts 24 townships (with an additional seven under construction) nationwide, part of his sprawling business empire under Alliance Global comprising a controlling interest in Emperador, owner of the Dalmore whisky and Fundador brandy brands, and a stake in the Philippine franchisee of McDonalds. Tan ranked No. 11 on the Philippines’ 50 Richest 2023 list with $2.4 billion net worth.

“Expanding our townships all over the Philippines will sustain our growth as a company and allow us to also diversify our offering in the real estate industry,” says son Kevin, who is also vice chairman and CEO of Alliance Global. “Through these developments, we can make a significant impact across economic sectors.”

Sultan Kudarat partners with Miss Universe, shows off tourism destinations, ‘inaul’ cloth

ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat (PIA) -- The province of Sultan Kudarat took center stage in this year's Miss Universe Philippines (MUPH) pageant as it became the official provincial partner.

Supported by Gov. Datu Pax Ali Mangudadatu, the candidates for MUPH 2024 are in Sultan Kudarat this week, specifically for their tourism shoots, runway challenge, and national costume competition. 

Also, for the first time in the pageant’s history, MUPH will stage a fashion show using the traditional Maguindanao "inaul" cloth as material.

Kaharudin Dalaten, the chief of staff of the governor and the OIC provincial tourism officer, confirmed in a press conference on April 23 that Sultan Kudarat Province has been chosen as the provincial partner for Miss Universe Philippines 2024.

"We are glad to announce that we are the official provincial government partner for the Miss Universe Philippines 2024. Napakasaya [We’re very happy] and overwhelming that the Miss Universe Philippines has chosen Sultan Kudarat Province as its provincial partner," said Dalaten.

He further clarified that the 53 MUPH candidates have arrived in the province on April 24 and will stay until April 29 to hold their tourism shoot, which will feature Sultan Kudarat's premier tourism destinations, including the Bansada Agri-Eco Adventure Park in Bagumbayan, Halo-halo of Esperanza, Lutayan Lake in Lutayan, Baras Bird Sanctuary in Tacurong City, the Sultan Kudarat Provincial Hospital and Provincial Capitol in Isulan, Pangadilan Rock Formation Falls, and La Palmera Mountain Ridge in Columbio.

“Based on the memorandum of agreement, Miss Universe Philippines will bring back to Sultan Kudarat the top three winning beauties for tourism shoots in other tourism hotspots in the province, including those in the coastal municipalities such as the Katunggan Coastal Eco Park,” Dalaten said.

When asked why Miss Universe Philippines Organization sought partnership with LGU Sultan Kudarat, Dalaten explained that this was due to the province's rich but barely known tourism products.

“ Alam natin na napakayaman ng probinsiya natin sa turismo [We know that our province is very rich in tourism]. We have so many tourism destinations worthy of promotion—our world-class caves, our mountain ridges, and other key tourism destinations. Sultan Kudarat has so much to offer, yet we are one of the most underrated destinations in the country,” he said, emphasizing further that one of the priorities of Gov. Mangudadatu is to intensify promotion of the province’s visitor industry offering.

“ Sabi ni Gov, hindi naman tayo mapapahiya dito kasi andaming world-class tourism offerings ang Sultan Kudarat. This time ma-showcase natin sa mga kandidata galing sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng Pilipinas and the world, Maganda, sabi ni Gov na ‘yong experience ay baon nila pagbalik sa kani-kanilang lugar at masasabi na once in their lives pumunta sila ng Sultan Kudarat at pumunta sila ng Mindanao. They will all be a living testimony that Mindanao is safe,” he said.

(The governor said we will not be embarrassed here because Sultan Kudarat has world-class tourism offerings. This time, we will be able to showcase candidates from different parts of the Philippines and the world. The governor expressed that the experience will be a treasure, allowing them to return to their respective places and proudly share that they once visited Sultan Kudarat and Mindanao.)

He added that the province's annual Miss Sultan Kudarat is also famous for staging one of the country's most elaborate and elegant pageant competitions, which is another reason for the province's selection as a MUPH partner.

Meanwhile, the fashion show featuring “inaul,” the traditional colorful and intricately designed cloth woven by Maguindanaon women, will highlight the cultural and historical significance and its importance to the people in the area, “how inaul has changed lives, how inaul created impact on the weavers and stores that sell these, and how inaul portrays Maguindanao provinces and the rest of the Cotabato Empire.”

At least 15 local designers will dress the candidates with their “inaul” creations. A local make-up artist will also take care of the candidates.

Dalaten revealed that entry to all the MUPH events, namely the Runway Challenge on April 26, the Inaul Fashion Show on April 27, and the National Costume on April 28, is free of charge. The Sultan Kudarat Gymnasium and Cultural Center, in addition to the Provincial Capitol grounds, will be used as the venues for these events.

To secure the MUPH candidates, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police have comprehensively laid out security measures for the location of shoots and events, according to Second District Board Member Soriel Lib-atin.

The Miss Universe candidates and party are also expected to savor the coffee from Sultan Kudarat. Proposals are underway to officially designate the province as the "Coffee Capital of the Philippines." 

Miss Universe Philippines is the second major event that the provincial government of Sultan Kudarat hosts this year.

In February, Sultan Kudarat Province hosted the largest Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair, where over P1.2 billion worth of services and benefits were provided to over 300,000 individuals. (DED - PIA Region 12)
