With the whole race still in shock following the death of Gino Mäder during stage 5 it was understandable that there was little impetus to race stage 7. Three teams left the race overnight along with many other riders too upset to continue, leaving those who signed on to ride tempo until the last climb. Muted hostilities were resumed here and fittingly it was world champion Remco Evenepole who broke away to ride solo to a symbolic and emotional victory, honouring the memory of a life lost too young.

This tragic edition of the Tour de Suisse will conclude with stage 8, the second individual time trial where riders will resume the race for the overall victory, each one carrying the memory of Gino with them, inspiring them to push harder around the 25.7km from St. Gallen to Abtwi.

One half of the Tour de France favourites spent the previous week at the Critérium du Dauphiné testing their legs, now it's time for the other half to flex theirs at the Tour de Suisse. With no Tadej Pogačar on the start sheet as he prepares at altitude and no Jonas Vingegaard as he continues to recover from injury the role of favourite rests on the shoulders of 2023 winner Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl - Trek). Although he's had a quiet season he will be keen to repeat last year's breakthrough victory in the Swiss Alps and reconfirm his place at cycling's top table. 

Going up against him with be the three pronged attack of Tom Pidcock, Egan Bernal and Jhonatan Narvaez of the INEOS Grenadiers with all eyes on Pidcock especially as he starts his serious attempt to be a stage race winner. Groupama - FDJ will be headed up by the young sensation Lenny Martinez and Israel - Premier Tech by the winner of this year's Fleche Wallonne , Stephen Williams.

Of those here to hunt stages and not chase overall victory look out for the likes of Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain - Victorious) and the local hero Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates).

Launching a brave move on the descent of the Col de la Croix , Johannes Staune-Mittet (Visma-Lease a Bike) made a valiant attempt to take stage seven but alas his efforts were in vain and he was caught with five kilometres to go. Although most of the chasing had been orchestrated by Team Ineos to try and set either Tom Pidcock or Egan Bernal up for the stage win it was again the duo of Adam Yates and João Almeida who were the strongest taking another 1-2 on the stage, the victory going to Yates. 

All that is left now is the Stage 8 time trial and it will be a head to head between Yates and Almeida to see who wins the race overall.

Tour de Suisse 2024 stages

The 2024 Tour de Suisse kicks off with a 4.8km prologue in the town of Vaduz to implement a GC order right from day one. After this brief yet intense beginning the following day sees the riders face a lumpy 177 kilometre journey from Vaduz to Regensdorf which although featuring three classified climbs is more then likely to finish in a bunch sprint. 

Those sprinters who miss out on stage two will have another chance on stage three at the finish in Rüschlikon, but with multiple short sharp ascents in the final kilometres they could be foiled by a late break away. 

Stage four is where the real action starts with the race finishing at the top of the world famous Gotthardpass. With almost 30 kilometres uphill the teams of the favourites will have to make sure their leaders are well placed to make their mark at the summit.

Stage five from Ambri to Cari features the second summit finish in two days with an even more testing finish than the day before, then stage six sees the first HC climb of the race. The 151 kilometres from Locarno to Blatten are dominated by the colossal Nufenenpass, but coming 60 kilometres from the end can it be decisive? 

Yet more mountains and yet another summit finish are on the cards on stage seven around Villars-sur-Ollon as the race crosses the same two mountains twice on a giant loop in and out of the town. 

The final stage like the first is a time trial. This time a longer test at 15.7 kilometres anyone hoping to gain time will have one last chance.

Tour de Suisse Route

The 2024 Tour de Suisse began with Stage 1 in Vaduz, which is technically in the neighboring country of Lichtenstein. The first stage is an individual time trial, where riders each race the course alone and compete to have the best time. From there, the Tour stages include a mix of terrain, including relatively flat stretches (especially Stage 3 from Steinmaur to Rüschlikon), rolling countryside, and dizzying climbs and descents through mountain passes (Stages 4 and 5 especially).

Stage 4 will take athletes through the famed Gotthard Pass, a legendary alpine route that crests at just over 2100 meters (6,909 feet) in altitude. The Tour wraps with Stage 8, a short but punchy time trial where riders will have to sprint 15.7 kilometers and ascend nearly 900 meters (2,900 feet) to the finish. While each stage presents unique challenges, the Tour de Suisse is a mountainous route, so the overall winner will need to be a talented climber. 

Tour de Suisse Schedule

The 2024 Tour de Suisse takes place in eight stages, starting on Sunday, June 9 and ending with the final stage on Sunday, June 16. The times below are the official start times for each stage, according to the race’s website, and they are converted to Eastern Standard Time.

Stage 1: Vaduz (time trial): June 9 at 8:08 a.m.

Stage 2: Vaduz to Regensdorf: June 10 at 6:45 a.m.

Stage 3: Steinmaur to Rüschlikon: June 11 at 7:10 a.m.

Stage 4: Rüschlikon to San Gottardo: June 12 at 6:30 a.m.

Stage 5: Ambri to Cari: June 13 at 7:05 a.m.

Stage 6: Nordic Centre Goms in Ulrichen to Blatten-Belalp: June 14 at 9 a.m.

Stage 7: Villars-sur-Ollon: June 15 at 8:20 a.m.

Stage 8: Aigle/Centre Mondial du Cyclisme UCI to Villars-sur-Ollon (time trial): June 16 at 7:38 a.m.

Tour de Suisse Cyclists to Watch

Because it takes place right before the Tour de France, the Tour de Suisse is a fascinating showcase for cycling talent. Some major teams choose not to race their best riders in this event so they can save their strength for the Tour de France, and that gives lesser-known athletes a chance to shine. Even so, the competition is always fierce, and the 2024 Tour de Suisse has drawn some high-wattage talent.

Cyclists to watch this year include Danish athlete Mattias Skjelmose, who won the Tour de Suisse last year (a race that was marred by the tragic death of cyclist Gino Mäder) and returns this year as the defending champion.

As of June 13, British cyclist Adam Yates, riding for UAE Team Emirates, is the current leader of the 2024 Tour de Suisse. Working with teammate João Almeida, he was able to ride to a commanding victory on the mountainous stage 5. Everything You Need to Know About the 2024 Tour de Suisse Women

The 2024 Tour de Suisse Women starts this Saturday, June 15, with four stages ranging from 10 to 79 miles in length—including a whole lot of climbing. The start list is packed with top racers, including last year’s second-place finisher Demi Vollering, Kasia Niewiadoma, Elisa Longo Borghini, and many riders who can snag a stage win. Expect fast racing and big battles up steep pitches in this short stage race—with slightly lower mileage and half the duration of many of the major stage races, this one should be explosive.

Race History

The women’s iteration of the 87-year-old Tour de Suisse race was first added in the late 1990s but only existed for four years. A new women’s race was added in 2021.

The race is well known for its brutal (but picturesque) climbs up mountains in the Swiss Alps, such as the famed Gotthard Pass.

There are four stages in the Tour de Suisse Women, including one mountain stage, a mountain time trial, and two hilly stages. While the women will only cover 330 kilometers—just over 200 miles—in the four stages, they’ll climb a whopping 6,600 meters over the course of the race, making it a climber’s paradise. Stage 1, a circuit starting and ending in Villars-sur-Ollon—where the UCI headquarters is located— is considered the most difficult stage in the race, with over 1500 meters of climbing in just 35 miles.

How to Watch the 2024 Tour de Suisse Women

What Happened Last Year

Last year’s race was shorter by 30 kilometers, with similar opening and time trial stages followed by two hilly stages of 100km and 120km. It was an SD Worx podium, with Marlen Reusser taking the win and Demi Vollering just over a minute behind her in the GC. But just behind them came Elisa Longo-Borghini, then of Trek-Segafredo, followed by Canyon//SRAM teammates Kasia Niewiadoma and Elise Chabbey.

Riders to Watch

Compared to the men’s race, which comes only two weeks ahead of the start of the 2024 Tour de France , the women’s peloton will have more recovery time between stage races since the

The Giro d’Italia Women doesn’t begin until July 7. That means, unlike the men’s race, which is missing some of the top competitors, like Tadej Pogačar , this field is seriously stacked with all of the top favorites.

Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) : Last year, Vollering was second behind her teammate Marlen Reusser in this race. This year, she’ll likely be looking for her first GC title at the Tour de Suisse, and without Reusser in the mix, she’ll almost certainly be the rider that the team is working for.

Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM) : Niewiadoma is always a threat in stage races and certainly has podium potential, but this year, she seems to be on a whole new level.

Niewiadoma also just had a break in Colorado for some altitude training and will likely be well-rested and ready to go head-to-head with Vollering. If you recall last year’s Col du Tourmalet stage at the Tour de France Femmes … things could get exciting on these mountain stages!

Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) : The Lidl-Trek team is sending a sold squad to back Longo-Borghini, who’s had a great season when it comes to one-day races but hasn’t quite put together a great stage race yet. She’s been on eight one-day race podiums this season and certainly will be hunting a solid stage race performance ahead of the Giro d’Italia Women and Tour de France Femmes.

Juliette Labous (dsm–firmenich PostNL) : Labous is always a bit of a sleeper in races, rarely getting the win, but also rarely far from the top five. She’s been on the podium in seven stage races in the last two years, including a fourth at this year’s Vuelta España Femenina . Certainly expect to see her on the podium, if not the top step.

Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Cannondale) : Faulkner just got named to the U.S. Olympic Track Team, but she’s still working hard on the road. She was second at the Tour de Suisse in the GC back in 2022, so a podium finish is well within her capabilities. She’s had some great results, including a stage win at the Vuelta España with her new team this year, and could certainly be going for more at this race before she shifts focus to the track.

Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck) : With the amount of climbing in this race, Kastelijn could be poised for a breakout result. She was third in the climber’s jersey standings at Vuelta España, and a race like this one is great for climbers who love punchy courses.

Jolana Neff (Switzerland): The Swiss enter a national team in this race, and it’s being led by mountain bike superstar and Olympic gold medalist Jolanda Neff. She’s a wildcard in this race—though admittedly, she’s using this race as a substitute for racing a World Cup MTB race at altitude in order to work on some breathing issues, so she may not be in top form. Still, she’s a super-strong rider and could send some shock waves through the peloton thanks to her formidable handling skills.

Reports of two DNS this morning, both from Astana Qazaqstan: Vadim Pronskiy and Alexey Lutsenko, both ill. For Lutsenko, set to be a leader again for Astana in the upcoming Tour de France - where he won a mountainous stage back in 2020 - this is a setback.

Meanwhile at the head of the race... Leaders:

Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep) and Maciej Bodnar (TotalEnergies ) are both former multiple national time trial champions and both chance their arm, with an equal lack of success. The bunch is still together. For now.

A picture of the bunch early on stage 4, where it's easy to see just how swiftly they're moving, at least until the break of the day forms. The weather is dry and the terrain is flat, but the latter is set to change when they go into the hills at Crans-Montana in around 60 kilometres' time.

130 kilometres to go

The bunch split in two, 30 riders went clear, another four went clear...but we're back to square one as the peloton reforms again.

Reports of a third non-starter today: one-day specialist Cedric Beullens (Lotto-Dstny).

And here's another shot of Evenepoel at today's start. No restrictions on signing autographs in this race at least...

There's 2,699 metres of vertical climbing today but it's almost all in the second half of the stage, so getting away on such flat, open terrain like this Swiss mountain valleys is no easy matter.

Jeremy Cabot (TotalEnergies) becomes the latest to try to go clear, but without success.

106 kilometres to go

After nearly 50 kilometres of break-neck racing, ten riders go clear and open up a promising gap: Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos-Grenadiers), Niklas Arndt (Bahrain Victorious); Kevin Vermaerke (DSM); Stan Dewulf (AG2R-Citröen); Kristian Sbaragli (Deceuninck-Alpecin); Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty); Luis Mas (Movistar); Daryl Impey (Israel-Premier Tech); Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto-Dstny) and Luca Mozzato (Arkéa-Samsic).

Trek-Segafredo take control at the front, and things are reported to be calming down after that fraught first hour of racing.

That first hour was run off at a scarily fast average speed of 55.7kmh, race organisers report. And there's still all the mountains to come.

The gap for the 10 riders ahead is 90 seconds and rising. Break of the day ahoy.

80 kilometres to go

Gap is at 2:25 as we approach the foot of the first climb of the day, the Crans Montana.

If this climb sounds familiar from a recent race, it should do. On the Giro d'Italia's excursion into Switzerland, Crans Montana was the scene of Einer Rubio's defeat of Thibaut Pinot and Alexander Cepeda. Many a Pinot fans' heart was broken that day... Pinot has been in the news about another Grand Tour in the last couple of days, of course, earning a comparison to none other than Their Satanic Majesties, no less, courtesy of his boss... 'He's a bit like the Rolling Stones' - Madiot on Pinot's farewell Tour de France

On the lower slopes of the Crans-Montana, a counter attack comes from the bunch courtesy of local boy Gino Mader (Bahrain Victorious) and he's rapidly closing in on the break.

Mader reaches the break. That means there are 11 riders up front halfway up the Crans-Montana: Gino Mader (Bahrain Victorious) Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos-Grenadiers) Niklas Arndt (Bahrain Victorious) Kevin Vermaerke (DSM) Stan Dewulf (AG2R-Citröen) Kristian Sbaragli (Deceuninck-Alpecin) Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) Luis Mas (Movistar) Daryl Impey (Israel-Premier Tech) Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto-Dstny) Luca Mozzato (Arkéa-Samsic)

62 kilometres to go

Arndt, best known as a sprinter with Vuelta and Giro stages to his name, is doing the hard work on the front of the break for his teammate Mader. But the gap is dropping all the same and currently stands at 1:35.

Mountains leader Nickolas Zukowsky (Q36.5) has attacked from the bunch, presumably to see if he can get some points at the top of the Crans Montana, and Luca Mozzato (Arkéa-Samsic) has been dropped from the break

The race is nearly at the top of the Crans-Montana and the gap has held fairly steady for now for the breakaway: it was 2:30 at the foot of the climb and it's now 2:15.

The break begins to tackle the next climb of the day, the Varenstrasse (Cat.3, 2.8km, 5.1%).

Luis Mas (Movistar) is dropped from the break, reducing their number to nine while Luca Mozzato  (Arkea-Samsic) is dropped from the chasing group.

The peloton have caught Mozzato and are closing in on the chasing group of Fabio Felline (Astana Qazaqstan)  and Jérémy Cabot (TotalEnergies).

Having led over the cat 1 climb of Crans Montana, Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto-Dstny) has now also taken top points in the cat. 3 climb of the Varrenstrasse  

30 kilometres to go

All the riders between break and bunch have now been swept up and we've left with nine riders out front: Gino Mader (Bahrain Victorious) Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos-Grenadiers) Niklas Arndt (Bahrain Victorious) Kevin Vermaerke (DSM) Stan Dewulf (AG2R-Citröen) Kristian Sbaragli (Deceuninck-Alpecin) Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) Daryl Impey (Israel-Premier Tech) Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto-Dstny)

After a brief dig by Kristian Sbaragli (Deceuninck-Alpecin), the nine leaders remain together on one of the few remaining flat stretches of road in today's stage. Just over two minutes the gap.

Onto the final first category climb of the day, the Dorben (Cat. 1, 19km, 4.5%)

The Bahrain duo of Niklas Arndt and Gino Mader are driving hard at the front of the break and Eenkhoorn and Dewulf are the first to be dropped

The break shrinks even more after Arndt completes his work and now there are just three riders ahead: Narvaez, Mader, Calmenjane, Vermaerke and Impey.

21 kilometres to go

Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty)  attacks. But the gap on the peloton is now down to 1:16...

Felix Gall, ninth overall, has attacked along with AG2R-Citroen teammate Mikael Cherel.

Gall then goes solo and is working his way through the following cars from the break.

Ayuso, third overall before the stage is reportedly struggling.

Gall continues to make inroads on the stage leaders, Narvaez, and Vermaeke, who have caught up with Calmejane.

19 kilometres to go

Gall sweeps past the trio of breakaways and takes off with Narvaez the only rider able to hold his wheel. The bunch are at 30 seconds and splitting apart.

Gall and Narvaez, the only rider from the early breakaway still out front, open up their gap on the remains of the bunch to 45 seconds.

This is a very strange climb, some very steep pitches, but also a couple of descents

Gall now drops Narvaez, while behind Romain Bardet (DSM) springs into action

Bardet reaches his teammate Vermaerke who gives him a turn as the duo go in search of stage leader Gall.

Skjelmose is still in the bunch, if you can call 10 riders a bunch, with Evenepoel.

Evenepoel in difficulties

Evenepoel's group regains contact with Bardet, who in turn has been caught by the yellow jersey group, but it's already breaking apart again.

Now it's Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) who's piling on the pressure in the yellow jersey group, while Gall continues to lead by a minute.

Another surge from Bilbao and Evenepoel is dropped again.

Just seven riders in the Bilbao chase group, including race leader Skjelmose, but no Evenepoel.

Gall still leads by a minute, as Oier Lazkano (Movistar) attacks from the chase group.

The climbs today are almost all classic Swiss affairs, by the way, smooth, broad and well-surfaced.

Another attack by Bilbao from the main group of 10 chasers brings them back up to Lazkano

Lazkano is pedalling squares and is quickly dropped.

Another searing attack by Romain Bardet sees him easily go clear of the main group. Kelderman follows, at distance.

Evenepoel tries to breath some life into the little chase group behind Bardet but the Frenchman is upping his own pace and powering onwards solo in search of Gall.

A brief spell of watching and waiting in the main group is followed by an attempt by Kelderman to go clear, which Evenepoel promptly squashes.

Yet another change in this epic struggle on the cat. 1 Dorben as Kelderman finally goes clear behind Gall and Bardet.  Bilbao tries to chase behind in the group, but nobody wants to help.

Five kilometres to go and Felix Gall looks to be comfortably en route to his first ever pro win at 25. Big question is - will he get the lead too? At the moment, with a stage gap of 1:31 on Skjelmose and 1:07 gap between them on GC, the answer is yes.

Now Bardet has been reached by Kelderman. They've only got 12 seconds on the favourites group though.

Bilbao is bridging across to Kelderman and Bardet, with Evenepoel, who's clearly found a second wind, still trying to keep the yellow-jersey group in touch with the three counterattackers.

Gall crosses the summit of the Dorben with 1:10 on the chasers. A short descent and an even shorter climb to come, and the stage win should be his.

Kelderman leads Bardet and Bilbao across the summit just as Evenepeol-Skjelmose group regains contact, and Bardet promptly attacks.

but it's quickly reformed again, with Bardet brought back from his late attack

What did I say? Bardet just went again for the umpteenth time today. Skjelmose drives the group of chasers.

Evenepoel second, Skjelmose third at about 1:03. With bonus seconds on offer, not clear if he's still in the lead or not. It's going to be tight...

As the dust settles, Evenepoel remains the best well-placed pre-race favourite, but his uneven performance on the climb raises a lot of questions about whether he can hold on and play it all on the final TT if Gall goes on the attack on the mountains again. And Skjelmose also rode impressively to hold onto second place overall. Lots of other top names, like Pello Bilbao, Wilco Kelderman and Romain Bardet clearly haven't said his last word. With four stages still to come, we're likely in for a fascinating second half of the Tour de Suisse.

Meanwhile here's a photo of the man of the day crossing the finish line for his first ever pro win and the overall lead into the bargain.

And here's some first words from Gall, second on stage 3's summit finish and one better on stage 4: "I don't really know what to think, I really can't believe it, my first professional victory here at the Tour de Suisse, also now the leader's jersey. Yesterday I felt super-good, I'm in the shape of my life, I said this morning if I feel the same on the last climb, I have to give it a try." "It's a nice result, I didn't think it would possible because it was a long way to the finish but I have to give it a try if I have these legs. I'm not going to win if I stick in the bunch and look at the others." Looking ahead, he said, "I hope I can enjoy all of this as much as possible, the mountain stage tomorrow is a little bit different, the climbs are longer and also at altitude. We will see how that suits me." "It's a little bit of a new experience for me, it's the first time I can race at this level.  Then also the TT is not exactly my strength at the moment, if I want to get a nice result on GC I also have to do a good race tomorrow,  and try to gain some time. But now I'm happy with today."

A picture of the former leader, Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo), crossing the stage 4 line in third. Just two seconds down on new race leader Felix Gall (AG2R-Citröen), he's still very much in the fight. 

Finally a picture of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) shortly after completing the stage and exchanging fistbumps with his 20-year-old compatriot, Cian Uijtdebroeks (Bora-Hansgrohe), who rode to an excellent fourth place today.

As for the secondary classifications, following stage 4, Gall, 25, is also in the Best Young Rider's lead, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) remains in control of the points jersey, Lilian Calmejane (TotalEnergies) now heads the mountains classification and Ineos Grenadiers are in first place in the teams ranking.

If today's stage seemed tough, then hold onto your hats for tomorrow, which is even harder - in fact, it's the most difficult day in the mountains of the entire 2023 race, with 4,711 metres of vertical climbing, much of it at altitude. Running for 212 kilometres, and with two HC climbs sandwiching a first cat prior to a fast descent to the finish, it could provide some major upsets on the GC.

2023 Tour de France watch guide: Everything to know to get ready for the 110th edition

The Super Bowl of cycling is back.

Jonas Vingegaard will attempt to defend his title in the 110th Tour de France, which starts July 1. Last year's win was the Danish rider's first victory as he beat the favored Tadej Pogacar with impressive performances in the mountains.

The yellow jersey is up for grabs again as Pogacar will be racing after suffering a broken wrist in April. Other notable participants include Spain's Mikel Landa and Enric Mas, France's David Gaudu and Australia's Jai Hindley and Ben O'Connor.

American team Trek-Segafredo will rebrand at the end of this month and race as Lidl-Trek for the Tour de France. Mattias Skjelmose, 22, won the Tour de Suisse on Sunday and the Dane will be seeking to carry that momentum into the Tour de France.

This year's route starts in Bilbao, Spain before its celebratory conclusion in Paris, France.
