my fiance made it home to me safely

my fiance made it home to me safely, after visiting her Mother in Detroit, her Mom was diagnosed with aggressive kidney cancer, her being in a emotional state, your company, drivers and associates we're professional in their sensitivity, i trusted Greyhound ,and you didn't let me down, Thank you so much ,

Hi, Donald. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts, and we're looking forward to your next trip with us.-LR

I booked a ticket 4 days in advance, they charged me thirty more dollars than last months ticket to the same place, then on the second day of waiting, i received an email that one way was cancelled by Greyhound, so i couldn't rebook because of obligations, so i asked phone agent how to get money back and she directed me to refund on help page online, which did not tell me how to get refund. So i went to booking to cancel ticket and they only gave me half my money back in a voucher, even though Greyhound cancelled. This is highway robbery and i'm lucky i'm not stranded. Greyhound from 2008 - 1995 was safe and reliable with Bus depots and customer service, but now its unsafe, unreliable, and it takes its customers money. I want the Medford, Or bus depot back!!!!!!

Wow.. cannot imagine a long distance journey. This was a short, 1 hour trip in central California. What could go wrong? Lots. The issues started with my on-line reservation. After confirming a ticket an on-line prompt asked if I wanted to reserve a seat. When I opened the seat map it showed only 1 available seat remaining. The implication - this was the last seat on the bus. I clicked on the available seat and paid the reserved seat fee. The bus arrived on time at the station site. The driver was friendly, scanned my ticket, and confirmed seat 11B. I boarded the bus where immediately noticed it was less than one-third full. And, ironically, someone occupied seat 11B. As I made my way down the aisle I noticed the damaged state of the bus interior, including torn seat upholstery as well as broken seats. For example the seat I ended up occupying was in a full recline setting and impossible to upright. I did not bother the person in 11B as there were many empty seats. Overall, good communication from the driver. Very poor environment on - board the bus itself. And an unnecessary seat reservation. Will not be using Greyhound any time soon, again. 2 starts

Riding a bus with no A/C and Stranded

Riding a bus with no A/C for almost 300 miles is not pleasant. Followed by being stranded for three hours standing outside in the sun is also not ideal. The wrong QR code being sent via email almost leaving me stranded for 5 more hours for the next bus was going to be the cherry on top. I'm glad my name was useful. The delay. I'm really not happy with the service.

The decline of the bus Greyhound bus company has been in…

Greyhound bus company has been in operation for over 60 years at least and they are not getting better with age. I just took a 30 hour bus trip from Phoenix to Kansas City that was literally the worst experience ever. From rude bus drivers to arriving at bus stations that weren’t open, the cacophony of errors just kept getting better and better. Not to mention we were watched by the driver like a hawk at the stops to assure no alcohol was purchased. These are grown people, now I understand that Greyhound feels they are dealing with lower class people possibly people who might get out of hand if allowed too much alcohol. But I suggest a better way to approach this then being the alcohol police for everyone. I remember when there were people who put your bags under the bus, transferred your bags and provided real customer service. It seems like every other mode of transportation still has that customer service but the bus what has happened?

It was simple to get my round trip…

It was simple to get my round trip tickets and user-friendly.

Today June 3rd, 2024 I was on board a Flix bus and we took a stop briefly at an iHop. Our bus driver, who had already had a negative attitude prior during the boarding process(who claimed it was due to a bad experience on her previous ride, so grace was given) told us to “be back on the bus at 5:05 please”, leaving a little over ten minutes for us to break. I came out after using the restroom at 5:03PM to see the bus was gone. I ran down the street and found the bus stopped at an intersection, where I proceeded to plead to be let in. The driver shook her head disapprovingly and eventually opened the door. By the time I was sitting in my seat again on the bus, it was only just turning 5:04PM. My girlfriend who was on board with me yelled to remind her it wasnt 5:05PM yet, which she argued back that it was, although it was easily verified that this wasnt the case. Had she left me without any reasonable cause, I would have been left stranded without my luggage on me, my charger, or my wallet as these items were with my girlfriend onboard. Nor would I have my medication for the night. All because the driver was impatient and didn't stick to the schedule she had set. This same driver also arrived MUCH earlier than scheduled for the original trip from San Fran, as well as most alarmingly sped VERY erratically for the rest of the very long bus ride. I observed her closely as she passed every car surrounding the bus, with ease. Zig-zagging around traffic and overall driving impulsively. This experience was made to be very stressful when it absolutely didn't have to be.

The engine caught fire and lost power

The engine caught fire and lost power. The driver tried calling for help and it took her 40 minutes to be able to connect to someone and the person on the other line did not know what he was doing. As of now we have been told to wait on the side of the highway with no power, heat or light. Next driver is coming maybe in 4 hours? Why is there no saftey plan put in place for situations like this?

9 Greyhound Bus Tips You Need to Know Before You Travel

All aboard!

travel by greyhound bus review

For long trips, many would argue that flying is not only quicker, but the view from the sky is so much better.

However, along with that aerial view, comes congested airports, delayed flights, and the dreaded middle seat. Throw in rising airfares, long lines at the security checkpoint, and sketchy in-flight Wi-Fi, and it's a wonder any of us are still choosing to fly over driving. But there is another mode of transportation growing in popularity across many parts of the country—traveling by bus, or more specifically, Greyhound. Okay vacationers, before you rule out reaching your destination on the "Dirty Dog," hear us out: Greyhound is a lot cheaper and, depending on where you're going, faster. There's also free Wi-Fi, and did we mention no TSA? You're welcome.

As someone who has made both short and long-haul trips using Greyhound (I'm talking 20-hour road trips, y'all!), I'm not only making the case for traveling by bus, but I'm also sharing the things you should know to make it a less tedious and safer experience. Hey, it certainly beats spending hundreds of dollars on a plane ticket and having no legroom, right? Here, nine tips for your next great adventure on the open road —er, um—bus:

1. Book your tickets early.

Although it's not the norm, there are a few bus stations that operate like airlines, in that you board by the number on the ticket. If this is the case for the station you're departing from, the earlier you purchase your ticket, the lower your boarding number and cost. A low boarding number also guarantees first dibs on a good seat. Keep in mind, Greyhound has three different fare options to choose from, such as "Economy," "Economy Extra," and "Flexible," and you can also choose an express bus that provides quicker, non-stop service, with fewer (or no) transfers.

2. Arrive at least an hour before departure.

If it's your first time on a Greyhound bus, allow yourself enough time to get checked in and find your gate. On weekends and during peak travel season, this process may take longer, so arriving an hour before gives you more wiggle room.

3. And, get in line as quickly as possible.

Once the station attendant announces that the line for your bus is forming (provided that you're not restricted to a boarding number), make a beeline towards the front. As with any form of transportation, where you sit can make all the difference in your trip. And those passengers who board first have their pick of the seat litter. Trust me, you don't want to spend hours on a bus next to a crying baby.

4. Make your luggage stand out.

Bags are positioned under the bus, and without an identifying marker, design, scarf, or luggage tag, it's hard to tell one black suitcase from another. Placing something on your bag or choosing a brightly-colored suitcase will help you to easily find luggage when you have to switch buses for transfers.

5. Sit at the front.

You'll have a better chance of having two seats all to yourself, since everyone else will, undoubtedly, be heading towards the back of the bus. Personally, I prefer the front because it makes me feel more safe to be closer to the driver. Not to mention, you can make a swift exit when seated near the front, making it easier to get off and grab your luggage just in time for the next transfer.

6. Try not to use the bathroom.

Do we even have to explain this one? Get your bathroom breaks in before boarding and when the bus stops. At least the restrooms at the stations are cleaner, and you have the privacy of a bathroom stall. As a general rule of thumb, I try to eat lighter and limit my water intake.

7. Follow the driver's rules during stops and transfers.

Sure, you haven't had to follow the rules on a bus since you were a kid, but each Greyhound driver has their own set of restrictions to make the ride safer and more enjoyable. During stops and bathroom breaks, the instructions usually involve what time to be back on the bus, what you can and cannot bring back on the bus, and where to go for food.

8. Keep your carry-on bag and ticket with you at all times.

Guard your purse or carry-on with your life. There's no overhead bin or storage like there is on a plane, so if you leave anything on the bus during stops, you run the risk of it being stolen. For that reason, I tend to go for a smaller bag or backpack that's easier to take on and off the bus. And you'll need to show your ticket every time you board the bus, so make sure you have it at the ready.

9. For your safety, stay inside the bus station at night.

Unless your trip is short, you will have layovers, and most of those stops will be at night. No matter how much you want to explore, it's best to stay inside the Greyhound station. Also, make sure you've already made arrangements to be picked up once you arrive at your final destination.

I spent 74 hours on buses from Miami to Seattle, one of Greyhound's longest routes. Here's what the $250 trip was like.

  • I would take another Greyhound bus in the future but don't plan on repeating the cross-country trip.

I spent three full days traveling from Miami to Seattle on one of the longest Greyhound routes in the US.

travel by greyhound bus review

I made it 15 minutes into my 74-hour Greyhound bus ride before someone called me crazy.

The bus had just turned onto the highway and left the Miami skyline behind when my seatmate started coursing through customary greetings. When I told him I was headed all the way to Seattle, he was bewildered. "You're crazy," he said.

Everyone in my life agreed. Riding one of the longest Greyhound routes in the US during my college spring break was a wild idea.

But I had two main reasons to take the trip: to see the American countryside through a new lens, which turned out to be smudged bus windows, and to meet people I probably wouldn't interact with otherwise.

Plus, the ticket was relatively cheap, costing me a total of $250, and I had nowhere better to be during the first week of January. Here's what the cross-country ride was like.

I took six different buses to reach my final destination.

travel by greyhound bus review

Greyhound doesn't offer a nonstop route from Miami to Seattle. Instead, my trip was broken into six segments.

I changed buses in Orlando, Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, Minneapolis, Billings, and Spokane. Jefferson Lines , a Greyhound partner company, operated the route from Minneapolis to Billings. This leg was included in my ticket and luckily wasn't a hassle.

Between tight layovers and frequent delays, I had to move quickly to make each leg of my trip.

travel by greyhound bus review

Most of my layovers between connecting buses were less than an hour, which terrified me. If I lost time at the beginning of the route, it could doom my whole trip's timeline.

The bus to Orlando left Miami late, cutting my layover window for my next leg down from an hour to two minutes. An agent stepped on board and told us we wouldn't even have time to go into the station. Instead, we had to get our bags from the bus, walk to the loading bay, and get right on the next Greyhound.

As the trip continued, delays became a regular occurrence. The bus from Spokane to Seattle was the only one that left and arrived on time. I got to Nashville a full hour after my connecting bus was scheduled to leave.

When we parked at the station, an agent came on the bus and told us he'd held all of our connecting buses. If the bus to Chicago left without us, there wouldn't be another with open seats for two days. The same thing happened in Minneapolis.

Greyhound delays are so common that they seemed to be built into the system, meaning I didn't get too stressed when my buses ran behind schedule.

I expected to pass by scenic landscapes and admire beautiful views, but we stayed on highways for pretty much the entire trip.

travel by greyhound bus review

Although the route passed through many climates and terrains, I found the sights lackluster, as the buses mostly stayed on major interstates.

Aside from the snowy mountains in Montana and the frozen fog in Wyoming , everything cool seemed to be an exit sign away.

The buses stopped very frequently, which added to my overall travel time.

travel by greyhound bus review

Apart from those seven main stops, the buses made short stops roughly every two hours to pick up and drop off passengers along the route.

In total, the buses I took made 47 stops in three days.

Seats were first come, first served on all of the buses.

travel by greyhound bus review

It was wise to get in the boarding line as early as possible. People who boarded the buses in their origin cities usually got the best spots, which, in my opinion, are window seats or ones toward the front.

Very few bus stops had vending machines or restaurants, so my food options were extremely limited.

travel by greyhound bus review

It was tricky to make a reliable food plan since most of the layovers were short or even nonexistent. There were no restaurants at the bus stations, except for a sandwich store in the Indianapolis station.

Every bus station had vending machines , and most took credit cards. The vending machines in the Miami station sold sandwiches, but the majority of the machines only sold snacks like chips or cookies.

I did my best to avoid bringing smelly foods on the bus. I felt terrible eating the McDonald's that a friend gave me in Orlando, as it made my section of the bus smell until I discarded the bag at the next stop.

It was a good thing I brought my own snacks because I ended up relying on them.

travel by greyhound bus review

Before the trip, I packed peanut-butter crackers and granola bars into a gallon-sized plastic bag, which proved to be a lifesaver.

By the end of the three days, I had eaten over 15 packs of peanut-butter crackers, 10 granola bars, three Clif bars, a bag of chips, a bag of Cheez-Its, six Reese's peanut-butter cups, a McDonald's Quarter Pounder, three chicken tenders, a turkey-and-cheese sandwich, and a bag of Dot's cinnamon-sugar pretzels.

Each bus had a bathroom, but lavatory smells carried through the entire vehicle.

travel by greyhound bus review

You can use the bathroom on board for solid and liquid purposes, but the smell did linger in the back of the bus. I was too shy to ever try it. Other passengers weren't.

Each bus had a bathroom with a small toilet, but the whole experience inside felt unstable due to the constant movement.

Every station I visited had a bathroom, but many of the stalls were out of toilet paper. If the onboard bathroom isn't an option and the station bathroom doesn't work out, you can relieve yourself during the occasional 15-minute stops at gas stations.

Almost all of the buses were full, and I enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people.

travel by greyhound bus review

Every single bus, except the one from Spokane to Seattle, was nearly full. I had a seatmate for the entire trip until that final leg, and even if I didn't have someone directly beside me, surrounding conversations often spilled around me.

From Miami to Orlando, I sat with a New Yorker headed to Universal Studios . The man behind us said he'd just been released from prison so we spent most of our trip helping him to line up transportation in Orlando and communicate with family members.

In Washington, I shared a pack of Skittles with two kids and taught them how to use a camera.

I felt safe in the stations and on the buses, and the drivers did a wonderful job handling passenger misbehavior.

travel by greyhound bus review

One of my family and friends' major concerns about my trip was my safety , but I didn't feel worried on the buses or at the stations. I saw policemen present at every station in large cities, and the bus drivers seemed very strict with onboard misbehavior.

In South Dakota, a man started screaming at the bus driver after they wouldn't stop for a smoke break, but other passengers quickly defended the driver and defused the situation.

And on the bus to Minneapolis, the driver removed a passenger from the vehicle after he threatened another passenger.

I barely slept and was a grumpy mess for a large portion of the journey.

travel by greyhound bus review

I made the trip in one shot, never stopping at hotels or getting off the bus at night. The bus seats reclined, but leaning back felt like a social taboo similar to reclining too far on airplanes .

I didn't bring a pillow or blanket, but I wish I had. The buses got cold at night, and my head had no natural resting point on the chair. I balled up an extra jacket and leaned against the window.

Even when the rhythm of the bus lulled me into momentary sleep, I would wake up often. Every time the bus made a stop, the driver would turn on the lights and announce the town's name — even in the middle of the night.

I spent the overnight bus ride from Chicago to Minneapolis in a daze, waking up every hour, at every single stop.

I would take another Greyhound in the future but would probably avoid going cross-country again.

travel by greyhound bus review

I made it to Seattle in about three days and paid less than what most plane tickets cost for an experience I'll never forget. To steal a cliché: It's the journey that counts, not the destination.

I had incredible conversations with my fellow passengers and met people I probably would've otherwise never had the opportunity to converse with on a plane, train , or road trip.

Greyhound buses are by no means luxurious, but they made me slow down and recognize the world and landscapes around me.

Greyhound Booking Has Improved…

I found the Greyhound online booking experience to upload a lot better/faster than it used to in the past. The entire process was pretty quick and seamless. The credit card entry was a smoother process as well, with optional billing address entry that one may quickly by-pass. In all, it's a pretty straightforward and "snag-fee" booking process.

I love the prices, the process to reserve is quick and simple. I travel on Greyhound a few times a month, I just get so tired of driving so letting somebody else do it for me is better. My bus drivers has been amazing, they had to pull the bus over a few times because people were talking loudly on the speaker phone, but everyone was thankful for that.

I really enjoyed my ride with your company There were a few issues but we got through them My number one problem was there were no communication between the drivers letting us know when our connecting bus was at the station There was no announcement telling us which bus was leaving so a few of us missed our connecting bus and had to wait hours to continue

The air conditional on the bus exactly…

The air conditional on the bus exactly above me was leaking. I told the bus driver. Nothing was done. I made a report once I reached my destination (Atlanta,Ga) by being transferred to feedback several times and following the prompts. Still have yet to get a response. unsatisfied customer. Want a refund not a free trip. It's impossible to reach a live person to make a complaint. Once I'm home, will follow-up on complaint

So disgusting

So disgusting, the first bus I had to ride. I sat down and the seats literally started moving back and fourth about 3 feet. Not safe at all. The management and employees are all rude and inconsiderate. Nothing is clean in the bus stations, the facilities are disgusting and so are the buses. Bus drivers are so careless, except for one female driver I had. Other than her, greyhound is garbage.

Bad customer service

I missed my bus and was given a no refund policy and would not hear my reason and was hung up I had to buy another ticket when I could not afford had to borrow money and friends and to drive an hour to get my ticket

The prices are more worth it than just paying these high prices for nothing when me and my children ride the bus for a much lower rate. Thanks for always having space in room on these buses.

The driver the driver the driver

Driver made the experience pleasant. He was professional, informative, polite safe driver, knew what he was doing, enforced the rules, & was very punctual. Left on time and arrived on time. Plus the fact that the bus now has Wi-Fi was an added bonus! It's not your old Greyhound bus line. I purchased my ticket online and just had to show him the PDF I downloaded to my phone.

The air conditioning did not work for…

The air conditioning did not work for the entire trip. The bus driver was informed and he continued the rest of the trip with that bus either way. Everyone was uncomfortable and we were literally sweating the entire way. I didn't have any water with me and started to feel dehydrated and got home with a horrible headache. I can't say I'd use Greyhound again let alone recommend to friends and family if that's how their customers will be treated.

Very enjoyable journey

Very enjoyable journey. I travelled by bus to Vancouver because of a lot of excessive luggage which the driver accepted to stow in the luggage compartment of the bus with much care. It was raining heavily and he was drenched - still he remained extremely pleasant.

Totally did not get what was promised

Totally did not get what was promised: A/C was broken, WiFi on the bus was totally absent, and I nearly had to fight another passenger to get my reserved seat. Driver was not able to make announcements comprehensible. There was a huge rip in the bus interior fabric right next to my seat, that thing clearly had not been maintained in a long time.

If I could give it a 0 star review I would.

If I could give it a 0 star review I would. I’m 16 years old and have almost gotten stranded in Portland Oregon twice now. My family will be sueing on my account. Their systems had issues and they gaslight their passengers every-time they have a problem. I called customer service and the guy on the other line gaslit me. The driver I just got on with has no patience and refuses to state his name, told a guy that got stranded in Pasco Washington overnight that he wasn’t gonna get on the bus regardless of if he had a ticket or not or got permission or not. We both basically got told that we were overreacting when we were pissed that we got stranded. There is going to be a hefty lawsuit coming from my end and problem from this other guy’s end as well.

From 2 hours on the phone to at least 3 different non English speaking people i used the website which gave me the wrong date and they want to steal 50% of my money..i contacted the BBB yesterday i am sitting here in Chicago been here 3 hours and was supposed to be on my way to my destination an hour ago

I GIVE GREYHOUND AN A+…

MAKING THIS RESERVATION FOR MY DAUGHTER WAS SUPER EASY AND CONVENIENT. I EASILY FOUND THE PERFECT ROUTE/TIME. I WAS EXTRA PLEASED THAT I COULD RESERVE HER SEAT AS WELL AS THE SEAT BESIDE HER SO HER TRIP WOULD BE MORE COMFORTABLE. GREYHOUND GETS AN A+ IN MY BOOK!

20+ Things to Know Before You Travel By Bus in the USA

February 21, 2018 by Karen Turner 10 Comments

I have many talents, but driving is not one of them. I’ve never been given a driver’s license, so I’ve been forced to travel by bus in the USA. Although it’s maybe not “cool” to travel by buses around the United States, taking Greyhound buses and Megabus is often a good cheap way to travel around the USA.

Keep reading for my recommendations for the bus companies in the United States, reviews of different bus companies in the US, what to know about bus travel in the United States, and what to bring on long bus trips in the United States.

Should you travel by bus in the US?

Yes, and no. If your trip around the United States is focused on city hopping, especially within one region (e.g. East Coast), traveling by bus in the United States is a good choice.. It’s often cheaper and easier not to have a car in big cities in the United States as parking can add up.  However, it depends a lot on the city as some cities have great public transportation system while others have terrible public transportation systems.

If you’re planning on focusing on the beautiful National Parks, you’re going to have difficulty getting around more rural areas of the US without a lot of money spent on taxis.  Some National Parks have better infrastructure in terms of getting there without a car (e.g. Yosemite), but many parks are quite rural and require extra time/money to get there without a car.  It might make sense to take a bus for some legs of your journey and do tours once you’re within a city.  This will be cheaper than all-inclusive options.

Bus travel in the United States is far more sustainable than traveling by car around the United States.  People love to write about road trips, but bus travel is way more eco-friendly!  Similarly, not everyone can afford a car or it doesn’t make sense to drive into another big city.

As a result, I think that travel by bus around the US can be a great option for those on a budget, anyone who’s into sustainable travel, and for those who don’t want to have to bother with driving in big American cities.

Bus travel in the United States is often not as advertised online in terms of wifi and on-board entertainment. Although many bus companies are interested in creating more premium experiences and improving the average bus experience, my experiences traveling by bus in the United States has been gritty and unglamorous. This has been the case for my husband too. ( What did you think you were getting when you paid $25 for a 8 hour bus across the country?)

National bus companies in the United States

You’ll encounter a lot of bus companies in the United States although many are regional bus lines that I haven’t personally encountered. Most of the time, unless it’s a major American holiday, bus travel doesn’t require significant planning beyond a day or two in advance.  American buses tend to be cheaper if you book way in advance with a major company (e.g. Greyhound or Megabus) while regional bus rates tend to rise less closer to the dates.

Greyhound is the most ubiquitous bus company in the United States.  Among the bus companies, the opinions about Greyhound buses online  tends to be more favorable although most people I know who regularly take Greyhounds aren’t their biggest cheerleaders.  The coverage of Greyhound buses is good across the country and you can get across the United States on a Greyhound on the drop of a hat.

However, you will probably have numerous stop-offs in various cities, which can add some time.  However, it’s possible to get to Yosemite with a Greyhound, which is why if you’re traveling in the United States without a car.  It’s often best to buy Greyhound tickets at least two weeks in advance and they have special deals if you buy online.

It’s basically very hard to get a $1 fare on Megabus at this point, but you can get some good deals on Megabus if you book ahead.  I started taking Megabus when it got started.  At this point, Megabus tends to be standard and their concept is getting you there.  The demographic for Megabus is considerably younger than Greyhound and you’ll find a lot of students taking Megabus.

Megabus tend to be stricter about bag sizes although they more uniformly have working outlets on their buses.  Coverage for Megabus is best on the East Coast, Midwest, and between college towns in the United States. They also have some coverage on the West Coast.

My husband has sworn off Megabus after the wheels almost caught on fire and the driver told the passengers it wasn’t safe to continue.  He was forced to wait in the middle of nowhere waiting for a new bus to come pick them up.  A couple of other friends have similar stories although I generally take Megabus given the choice as I find people are a bit more considerate.

BoltBus is a “premium” bus company that runs on the East and West coast.  Their buses tend to be much newer and nicer than others that I’ve taken, however the routes are more limited to major cities on the coasts.  Their plugs tend to work much more reliably and recently, they started including movies in the price of the bus.

I’ve generally liked BoltBus and I wish that they would expand to more cities.  It’s my go-to choice for traveling from New York City to Washington DC.

Trailways Transportation System

Trailways is a network of 70+ regional bus companies in the United States that compromises the oldest bus network in the United States.  Their network crosses the United States and I’ve taken Trailways quite a few times.  I find their buses not as uniform as you’re likely to be switching companies as you switch state lines.  Most of my experience taking Trailways meant that I had long layovers in rural Pennsylvania at one particular transfer point.

For smaller cities with less coverage on the big names, I find that Trailways is more reliable in helping you find a route although it might add time to your journey.  It depends on the bus journey, however I find that Trailway buses tend to stop off a lot more although it makes the journey through the United States far more scenic as you’re often taking non-highway routes.

Other Bus companies in the United States

Bus traveling along highway in the United States. Must-know tips if you're considering traveling by bus in the US!

There’s a ton more bus companies in the United States, including Vonlane (Texas), Fullington Trailways (New York/Pennsylvania), Utah Trailways (Utah), Burlington Trailways (Vermont), Jefferson Lines, Bieber Tours (Pennsylvania/New York), Barons Bus Lines (East Coast),  Adirondack Trailways (Canada/New York), RedCoach (Florida; premium bus), Capital Trailways (South/Alabama), Hoosier Transportation (Midwest/Iowa/Michigan/Kentucky), Indian Trails (Michigan), Peter Pan (East Coast), Orange Belt (California), etc. There’s a ton more.  If you’re not seeing a route to where you’re going, I recommend stopping by the bus station to see if there’s a bus heading that way on a regional line.

On the east coast and the west coast, you’ll also find Chinese bus companies that run between the Chinatowns or downtowns of major cities on the East Coast/West Coast.  The Chinese bus companies are often the cheapest option if you’re traveling to/from New York City or LA to a nearby major city.

Due to price, I often took the Chinese bus companies.  These bus rides went by without incident for me, but my cousin was stranded in the middle of nowhere after a bus broke down and the bus company wasn’t helpful at all.

Things to know about bus travel in the United States

The bus stations….

With the creation of the interstate highway system, buses in the United States stopped being as popular as they were before.  The bus infrastructure has suffered as a result.  Most bus stations tend to be on the dingier side and do not require a ticket to enter the bus station, so it’s best to be aware of your belongings.  Most bus stations in the United States tend to be located in the city center, which aren’t always in the best neighborhoods.

In the case of many of the “newer” bus lines (e.g. Megabus), their business model is about cutting out the bus station to pass on savings to consumers.  This means that their bus station may be a Walmart parking lot or simply a curb on a sidewalk.  As a result, you might be forced to wait outside for the bus and/or there may be no bus station for you to wait inside at.  Bring an umbrella if you think this might be the case.

Finding the bus departure place may be harder than you realize!

Often, bus terminals for Greyhound and other regional bus stations are well-established terminals in the city center.  However, for some of the newer bus companies, they have their buses designated in a large area.  You’re going to need an extra twenty minutes at minimum if you’re taking Megabus to find your bus if it’s departing from most major cities.

In New York, I’ve found that I need the extra time to walk past all the buses waiting to find the correct departure point. Similarly, when I took BoltBus out of DC, I had to spend a while searching for the one departing for NYC as there were more than five buses departing around the same time.

You might get dropped off in the middle of nowhere

Modern-day America has been built for cars.  For most major cities, you’ll be dropped of at the bus terminal, which can be far from the non-downtown parts of a city. I used to often take one route and the bus terminal was over three miles from the main downtown area, which can be tricky if you don’t have a car.

In one case, I was forced to take a taxi as it wasn’t possible to get from the bus terminal to my final destination (the airport) without it.  It’s good to check where the bus stop will be as you don’t want to need to take a taxi to get there.  Google Maps in my go-to source.

Avoid buses that depart or arrive late at night

Trust me on this one. A lot of cities have poor transportation after a certain hour (often eleven at night), and often bus terminals are in the heart of the city center.  Unlike European cities, many American city centers aren’t uniformly safe and I recommend using some caution if you’ll be walking around with all your valuables late at night.  Crime in America is an issue.

Book in advance to get the best times and prices

Many bus companies, especially Boltbus and Megabus, advertise low rates if you book as far in advance as possible.  I often take Megabus and wait to see when the tickets go on sale, so I can get one of the first tickets, which is typically less than $5.  If you wait too long, especially for holiday weekends, the prices will go up considerably.  That said, you’ll find a bus to your destination within a day or two if you simply head to the bus station on short notice.

Not every bus still has wifi… or working plugs

Girl sitting on a bus. Read tips for traveling without a car in the United States and what to know about bus companies in the United States.

A good playlist is always a good idea. Photo by VadimGuzhva/bigstockphoto

Although many bus companies advertise that buses have wifi, the wifi on the bus is ridiculously slow, throttled for video, and unreliable.  I’ve been on countless buses where the wifi never worked because it didn’t have wifi, the wifi was broken, or there were too many people on it at once.

It’s become trendy to have outlets, but often, the outlets are somewhere really inconvenient or they don’t work.  A lot of people think initially that they’ll work on the bus, but I find that it’s not a conducive environment for working as the seat-tray makes it hard to fit a laptop in many cases.

This becomes especially true when others decide to lean their chair back.  I’ve been on buses where the outlets were above you in the “ceiling”, so unless you spend the whole bus ride holding your plug in the outlet, you will not be charging your electronics.  Some of the newer buses have improved upon this design and have easy-to-access plugs/usb ports.

You need identification and often your bus ticket printed

Typically, any photo identification will do, however the name needs to match the ticket. That means that you typically can’t use your friend’s ticket. If you’re a foreigner, I recommend having your passport on you.

Not all bus companies allow e-tickets, so I always print my ticket ahead as finding a good place to print my ticket isn’t always easy near the bus station.  Some bus companies are better about accepting e-tickets, so check the terms to see if it’s enough to have a ticket on your phone.

The real reason that I always print my ticket?  I need to have my phone charged enough for when I arrive.  As a result, I recommend having it printed, so you don’t need to worry about having your phone charged up for the next transfer or for when I arrive at the destination, particularly if it’s a long bus ride.  I often find myself playing on my phone, which can kill the battery.

Your bus ticket is typically non-refundable and for a specific time

Unless you pay extra for a refundable ticket, you’re often getting one for a specific time. Don’t miss your bus! Some bus companies allow you to change the ticket for the difference in ticket price in addition to a fee, but I’ve actually bought a ticket in most of those cases as it was cheaper than the change fee.

Oh, the people you’ll meet!

"Photo

Dr. Seuss must have taken buses around the United States. While most of my bus trips have gone by without incidence, both my husband and I have some  memorable  bus travel stories as do most of my friends. Most people sleep, stare out the window, talk to friends on the phone, or chat with friends on the bus. Let’s be clear that most people you’ll encounter on the buses will be non-offensive, but as I have regularly taken regional buses through rural areas, you’re bound to meet some characters.

This following story is from my husband who took a twenty-four hour Greyhound bus from Pennsylvania to Kentucky via Ohio…

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, many students choose to take Greyhound home because it is so cheap.  You’re  not supposed to bring alcohol on the bus, however some people do.  This student had smuggled a bottle of peach flavored vodka on the bus.  He was hell-bent on talking to every girl on the bus and switched seats countless times.  He was drinking the vodka and kept offering it to the girls.  After they all rejected it and him, he sitting up next to me. There was a girl nearby from Hawaii who was heading to a friend’s house in Iowa to celebrate Thanksgiving.  The girl and the guy hit it off and get very drunk on the bus.  They start having a big make-out session, so the whole bus was just eavesdropping while some were openly watching them.   The issue was that it was night-time and they were being loud while everyone else on the bus was trying to sleep. The first leg took us to Columbus, which is a big switching point for buses.  I was heading south from there as was the guy.  The girl was heading further west from there. We get to Columbus and they decide that they’re in love .  The girl invites him to come to Iowa with her to her friend’s house and the guy actually switches his ticket to go to Iowa.  Sure enough, they left for Iowa together to her friend’s parents house. Imagine her friend’s reaction when she shows up hungover with this random guy she met on a Greyhound.

Don’t drink too many liquids

This is a newbie bus mistake.  It’s good to stay hydrated and I typically bring at least one bottle of water for longer journeys, however I generally avoid bus bathrooms.  More importantly: Some buses, especially regional ones for shorter legs, don’t have a bathroom on the bus.  Be sure to use the bathroom at the bus terminal before you leave!

It’s not a guarantee that your bus will stop off at a bus station or rest stop long enough for you to go inside.

For longer trips, keep in mind that the bus will probably stop off at a rest stop as they’re not allowed to drive over a certain number of hours without stopping.  It’s not a guarantee for shorter journeys that the bus will stop off at a rest station long enough for you get something to eat, so bring your own food/drinks ahead.

If it looks like you’ll have fifteen minutes waiting at a station for passengers, be sure to tell the bus driver that you’ll be back to ensure that the bus doesn’t leave without you.  There’s often a line for the restroom at rest stops.

Set an alarm

Photo of man sleeping on overnight bus in the United States. Read more tips for surviving long bus trips and what to know before taking a Greyhound bus in the United States.

On long bus rides, you might fall asleep. That’s fine, however if your destination isn’t the final destination, you’ll want to set an alarm on your phone before the time that your bus is supposed to arrive.  There might be traffic, but in general, it’s a safe move.

One suitcase and one backpack.  Keep your valuables with you.

Remember that you’re NOT on a plane. Some bus companies are more lax about luggage, however if it’s a crowded bus or you’re traveling over major holiday, you might need to pay for an extra bag.  I also recommend avoiding having your stuff in bags if possible as I’ve seen people get rejected from boarding onto buses when carrying their belongings in plastic bags.

I tend to keep my valuables in my backpack rather than below the bus, especially if the bus has a lot of stop off points  I recommend labeling your bag clearly as it’s hard to find a black suitcase among 50 other black suitcases .  Weird size luggage might cause issues, so ask beforehand.

Typically at stops, people take their items from the hull, so unless you want your bag taken by mistake, it’s best to keep your valuables in your backpack with you on the bus.  I’ve never had a bag stolen or taken by mistake, but if it’s a long ride with a lot of stops, I recommend labeling your bag clearly and packing your backpack carefully.

Be early for the bus!

Although it hasn’t often happened, buses leave on time.  More often than not, they’ll wait a couple more minutes for passengers who are running a few minutes late, but I’ve seen so many people running after the bus without success.  You need time to get your luggage under the hold.  Certain bus companies, including Megabus, overbook their seats, so if you’re not there early and it’s a full bus, you might get rejected on the bus and need to wait for the next one.

What to bring on long bus trips in the United States

If you’re wondering what to pack for an overnight bus trip, I’m well-experienced in these long miserable journeys that I’ve done to save money.

Be sure to bring antibacterial gel

travel by greyhound bus review

Some bus bathrooms are best avoided.  Similarly, the soap dispenser may not work. Be sure to have your own antibacterial gel to clean your hands with, especially if you plan on eating.

Travel Pillow.

travel by greyhound bus review

This is the MOST important item that you’ll want to pack for an overnight bus trip as I struggle to sleep without a good travel pillow. I have this exact travel pillow and I love how small it folds up!

Backpack that will fit your valuables, including your laptop.

travel by greyhound bus review

I recommend looking for a carry-on friendly sized backpack that can fit your backpack as well as most of your valuables, so that they’re close to you.

Your iPad and a season of shows lined up with some headphones.

travel by greyhound bus review

This is definitely not a necessity, but if you’re going to have a lot of long bus trips, I recommend bringing an iPad , so you can watch movies on the bus.  Download your shows before you leave wifi!

travel by greyhound bus review

I recommend not buying your snacks at the bus station if possible as the prices tend to be a lot higher and the selection isn’t as good as going to the supermarket! Avoid peanuts as some people are really allergic.   I really like to carry granola bars with me as they’re hard to smoosh and non-messy.

Wear layers and bring a sweatshirt.

travel by greyhound bus review

You never know when the bus will be too warm or too cold, so I always try to bring a sweatshirt to put on over my clothes in case I get cold! I recommend dressing comfy and you’ll be sitting for many hours.

A good book and a reading light.

travel by greyhound bus review

For night buses, the driver typically shuts off the lights after a certain time. Although there’s a reading light from above, I’m often very conscious of it annoying the people around me.  Instead, I usually bring my own reading light as well as a good book.  For a good read, I recommend Night Film (which will take you many hours to finish), the Power , or On the Road for some American travel inspiration.

External Phone Battery Charger

travel by greyhound bus review

You never know when there won’t be a working charger on the bus and you might need to make a phone call. Don’t let your phone die and carry an external phone battery charger .

Wow, I live in the US and I have never even considered bus travel (excluding taking the Megabus very occasionally from San Francisco to LA). That’s such a cool way to travel the country, and I will definitely have to consider it in the future! Thanks for sharing all these helpful tips.

The US is so spread out that it’s difficult to see a lot of it without access to a car. Bus is often the only option for many travelers. I’ve never traveled long distance by bus in the US, but I’ve heard they’re pretty unpleasant.

I haven’t been to the US of A but everyone has always told me that if you want to move around, you need a car. That is the only way to travel unless you consider flights which can get expensive. I was pleasantly surprised to know that the bus routes are usable.

Super comprehensive and useful guide! I felt I’ve learned a lot about the buses in U.S just from this post. The reading light is a great suggestion – I’m gonna consider that the next time I fret over bringing a book on trips! Same like you, I feel conscious that the overhead light will be disturbing to my neighbour 😉

I went to college in DC so def took the fung wa chinatown bus many times! I did have a greyhound driver once say (at a rest stop) “I dont count heads, I just count time” meaning he was rolling out at the designated time with or without you! I think now at age 40, I’ve graduated from Bus travel.

Don’t use Greyhound bus.. Many of the buses are unsafe, employees for the most part are rude worst of all is the huge amount of lost luggage. Its piled in s warehouse in Dallas I think, and you will never see it again. Mine was lost last summer and none will help me get it back. Travel Greyhound at your own risk.

The buses are affordable but the catch is, IF YOU CANCEL YOUR TRIP, ITS ‘ZERO’ REFUND! However, they can reschedule you at no cost. So, think well and be sure before you book!!

Tip for sleeping on busses

If you are fortunate enough to have 2 seats to yourself push back your seat to the limit. Then leave the other seat in upright position. You can then test your Head on the other seatback. About as comfortable as it gets on a bus

No Customer Service

I had never been to the Birmingham Alabama location. My driver didn’t announce my final destination from his manifest. I arrived @09:30 am for a 14:30 departure. The customer service desk was closed or vacated. I had asked the security guard several times is this my bus? He said no and the driver would come inside and announce departure. Unfortunately, after waiting five hours for my bus, the bus departed without me because there was no representative and the security guard provided me with erroneous information. I called customer service and they informed me that because the bus wasn’t delayed for two hours or more, they couldn’t put me on the next bus to Huntsville. Consequently, I had to purchase another ticket and wait another five hours to depart. I don’t consider this A1 customer service. Thanks. TheTravelBro

Cannot be worse than this

Bus was always late. Miss my business trip because of this. Terrible customer service that didn’t follow through with refund request. Bus was always with horrible smell (Baron bus was better).

Hitting roads with road work the seat next to me broke had the seat cushion break off. *pictures taken* bus driver had to pull over 3 times to make sure things where ok. On one instance a compartment panel outside opened up while driving.

Very Improved

Ii think anyone who has ridden the bus last year will agree with me when I say traveling on the bus was a nightmare at times. Drivers wouldnt come in for their shifts, and we would be stuck waiting for hours. That hasnt happened any more. In the last 4 months (I ride every month) there have been no delays. Its a much better trip when you arent unexpectedly delayed for several hours. I have been much happier with the service so far this year. Thank you.

if there was a zero star here they would have gotten it....Don't leave and 85-year-old handicap female stranded for `` 24 HOURS`` in a bus station due to the bus being late and she had nothing to do with the late bus. YOU SHOULD HAVE MADE ARRANGEMENTS FOIR HER TO BE ABLE TO SLEEP AND GET BACK AND FORTH THE STATION ON TIME.... not one stop but 2 stops she was stranded and a nervus wreck. they should be a shamed of themselves to do this to anyone.

Hi, Stephen. Thank you very much for your 5 Star review! Hope to see you on board soon. -LR

So many things wrong

The bus was an hour and 40 minutes late; no explanation given. We weren't notified about it until 10 minutes before schedule, so we couldn't adjust our schedules at all. Then the bus that arrived was broken and wouldn't go above 10mph. So we puttered around midtown for 20 minutes before returning to the station. Then the driver left and no one contacted us for about 30 minutes. He left the AC on full blast on a 50 degree day. Apparently, the bus we were supposed to switch to had a fuel leak, or something. Then another new bus came and we switched to it, then the driver left again and we sat and did nothing for another 20 minutes. 3 hours after our scheduled departure time, we departed. Toward the end of our trip, the driver remarked that the bus we were on was "losing power when I speed up". So, all the buses have critical mechanical failures, and every time you board a bus you're rolling the dice safety-wise. And when they're 2 hours late, they don't notify you until the scheduled boarding time.

The bus was not clean

The bus was not clean. The other day the bus left before the regular departure time. My friend had to drive almost two hours to pick me up from the bus station because the driver decide to leave before.

Grim truth behind emoji greyhound pic as school bus driver is banned from owning the dogs

This seemingly happy picture of a school bus driver with a prized greyhound hides a twisted truth.

A school bus driver who arranged to have four of his racing dogs killed may face criminal charges after an investigation by a greyhound watchdog.

Collin Wasson, from Wagga Wagga, pleaded guilty to 16 offences at the Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission (GIWC) earlier this month, which included arranging for a third party to kill four greyhounds on his behalf.

He was given a lifetime ban from greyhound racing with the commission also considering separate criminal charges.

Wasson was photographed giving a talk to school students in his role as a bus driver. Picture: The Daily Advertiser

GWIC’s Chief Commissioner Mr Alby Taylor called Wasson’s behaviour “appalling”.

“Being a greyhound racing participant is a privilege, not a right, and this participant will no longer enjoy such a privilege,” he said.

“Zero tolerance means exactly that.”

Wasson ordered the killing of his greyhounds Aston Shaker, Qatar Angel and Pennyroyal Tea along with an unnamed greyhound in his care.

The commission also found that Wasson attempted to mislead the investigation “by concealing his actions”.

“While those who oppose the greyhound racing industry will say this case is an example of an industry incapable of reform, this is not the case,” Mr Taylor said.

“This case highlights just how dedicated and serious the commission is about reform.”

He was also charged with failing to notify the commission of their deaths, failing to maintain their kennels to a proper standard and failing to provide the dogs with appropriate veterinary care.

Aston Shaker ran in five races across 2020, winning a total $1525 prize money.

In a statement to news.com.au, GWIC said the investigation into criminal charges is still underway.

“Due to the ongoing nature of this investigation, at this stage it would not be suitable for the Commission to make further comment,” they said.

Moscow Throws Putin Fanboy Scott Ritter Under the Bus

The former U.N. weapons inspector turned sex offender says he was pulled off a plane heading to Russia.

Former U.N. weapons inspector turned sex offender Scott Ritter has made a name for himself parroting Kremlin propaganda about the war against Ukraine.

But if he was hoping Moscow would back him up after he says he was barred from traveling to Russia because Washington is “afraid” of him appearing at a St. Petersburg economic forum, he was apparently sadly mistaken.

While Ritter and his supporters—including Russian media—have played up the notion that his passport was seized because he has the U.S. administration shaking in their boots, the Kremlin did not share in this hysteria.

Asked about the scandal Tuesday, Vladimir Putin ’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov played down Ritter’s claims. He told reporters the “details” about the situation were not clear and that there was nothing unusual about a former intelligence officer facing certain travel restrictions.

“This is practiced in almost all countries in relation to former intelligence officers,” he said.

He added, however, that if Ritter truly was thrown off the flight to stop him speaking in Russia then it was part of a “frenzied campaign to prevent U.S. citizens from establishing at least some contacts with Russia.”

Ritter famously visited Chechnya in January and delivered a pep talk in broken Russian to thousands of troops who’ve been waging war in Ukraine, so he’s already had plenty of “contacts” apparently even with Russian leaders sanctioned by the West.

The State Department has declined to comment on the “status” of Ritter’s passport. Ritter, who was convicted in an underage online sex sting in 2011, told Kremlin-controlled media on Monday that he was pulled off a flight on his way to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where he was slated to speak.

“They took my passport. When asked why, they said ‘orders of the State Department,’” he told RT, later claiming that the real “purpose” of the move was to deprive Russia of his presence.

“They stuck it to the Russians,” he claimed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday that there’s nothing Moscow can do to help Ritter.

“He’s not a Russian citizen,” he said.

Once a Sheriff’s Deputy in Florida, Now a Source of Disinformation From Russia

In 2016, Russia used an army of trolls to interfere in the U.S. presidential election. This year, an American given asylum in Moscow may be accomplishing much the same thing all by himself.

A lone car on a cobbled street lined with trees. A spire rises in the background under a deep blue sky.

By Steven Lee Myers

Steven Lee Myers spoke to more than a dozen researchers and government officials for this article.

A dozen years ago, John Mark Dougan, a former deputy sheriff in Palm Beach County, Fla., sent voters an email posing as a county commissioner, urging them to oppose the re-election of the county’s sheriff.

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

He later masqueraded online as a Russian tech worker with a pseudonym, BadVolf, to leak confidential information in violation of state law, fooling officials in Florida who thought they were dealing with a foreigner.

He also posed as a fictional New York City heiress he called Jessica, tricking an adviser to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office into divulging improper conduct by the department.

“And boy, did he ever spill ALL of the beans,” Mr. Dougan said in a written response to questions for this article, in which he confirmed his role in these episodes.

Those subterfuges in the United States, it turned out, were only a prelude to a more prominent and potentially more ominous campaign of deception he has been conducting from Russia.

Mr. Dougan, 51, who received political asylum in Moscow, is now a key player in Russia’s disinformation operations against the West. Back in 2016, when the Kremlin interfered in the American presidential election, an army of computer trolls toiled for hours in an office building in St. Petersburg to try to fool Americans online.

Today Mr. Dougan may be accomplishing much the same task largely by himself, according to American and European government officials and researchers from companies and organizations that have tracked his activities since August. The groups include NewsGuard, a company that reviews the reliability of news and information online; Recorded Future, a threat intelligence company; and Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub.

Working from an apartment crowded with servers and other computer equipment, Mr. Dougan has built an ever-growing network of more than 160 fake websites that mimic news outlets in the United States, Britain and France.

With the help of commercially available artificial intelligence tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and DALL-E 3, he has filled the sites with tens of thousands of articles, many based on actual news events. Interspersed among them are also bespoke fabrications that officials in the United States and European Union have attributed to Russian intelligence agencies or the administration of President Vladimir V. Putin.

Between September and May, Mr. Dougan’s outlets have been cited or referred to in news articles or social media posts nearly 8,000 times, and seen by more than 37 million people in 16 languages, according to a report released Wednesday by NewsGuard .

The fakes have recently included a baseless article on a fake San Francisco Chronicle website that said Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, had smuggled 300 kilograms of cocaine from Argentina. Another false narrative appeared last month in the sham Chronicle and on another site, called The Boston Times, claiming that the C.I.A. was working with Ukrainians to undermine Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign.

Mr. Dougan, in a series of text exchanges and one telephone interview with The New York Times, denied operating the sites. A digital trail of clues, including web domains and internet protocol addresses, suggests otherwise, the officials and researchers say.

A friend in Florida who has known Mr. Dougan for 20 years, Jose Lambiet, also said in a telephone interview that Mr. Dougan told him in January that he had created the sites.

Steven Brill, a founder of NewsGuard, which has spent months tracking Mr. Dougan’s work, said he represented “a massive incursion into the American news ecosystem.”

“It’s not just some guy sitting in his basement in New Jersey tapping out a phony website,” he added.

Mr. Dougan’s emergence as a weapon of the Kremlin’s propaganda war follows a troubled life in the United States that included home foreclosures and bankruptcy. As a law enforcement officer in Florida and Maine, he faced accusations of excessive use of force and sexual harassment that resulted in costly lawsuits against the departments he worked for.

He faces an arrest warrant in Florida — its records sealed by court order — on 21 felony charges of extortion and wiretapping that resulted from a long-running feud with the sheriff of Palm Beach County.

Mr. Dougan’s activities from Moscow, where he fled in 2016 one step ahead of those charges, continue to draw scrutiny from the authorities in the United States. Last year, he impersonated an F.B.I. agent in a telephone call to Mr. Brill, according to an account by Mr. Brill to be published next week in a new book, “The Death of Truth.”

Mr. Dougan, who acknowledged making the call in a text message this week, had been angered by a NewsGuard report in February 2023 that criticized YouTube for allowing videos parroting Russian propaganda about the war in Ukraine, including some by Mr. Dougan.

In a rambling, profanity-laced video in response on YouTube last year, Mr. Dougan posted excerpts from the call with Mr. Brill and showed a Google Earth satellite photograph of his home in Westchester County, a suburb of New York City — “just down the road from the Clinton crime family,” as Mr. Dougan put it, referring to the home of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The call prompted an F.B.I. investigation that, according to Mr. Brill, traced the call to Mr. Dougan’s telephone in Russia. (A spokeswoman for the bureau did not respond to a request for comment on the investigation or Mr. Dougan’s previous activities.)

A History in Law Enforcement

Mr. Dougan began to hone the skills that he is putting to use today during a turbulent childhood in the United States. In the written responses to questions for this article, he said he had struggled at home and in school, bullied because of Tourette’s syndrome, but found a passion in computers. When he was 8, he said, the man who would become his stepfather began teaching him to write computer code.

“By the time I was 16,” he wrote in one response, “I knew a dozen different programming languages.”

After a four-year stint in the Marine Corps, which he claims he offered to join in lieu of a jail sentence for fleeing a police stop for speeding on a motorcycle, he became a police officer first in a small force in Mangonia Park, Fla., and then the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office from 2005 to 2009.

According to news reports and his own accounts over the years, Mr. Dougan repeatedly clashed with superiors and colleagues, facing numerous internal investigations that he said were retaliatory because he objected to police misconduct, including instances of racial bias.

In 2009, he moved briefly to Windham, Maine, to work in another small-town police department. There he faced a complaint of sexual harassment that resulted in his dismissal before he completed his probationary period.

Mr. Dougan started a website called WindhamTalk to defend himself. The website foreshadowed others he would create, including one devoted to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, PBSOTalk.

After moving back to Florida, he used PBSOTalk to torment in particular the department’s elected sheriff, Ric L. Bradshaw, whom he accused of corruption. He posted the unlawful recordings of “Jessica” chatting with a former detective commander, Mark Lewis, who, Mr. Dougan claimed, was investigating the sheriff’s critics, including himself. As Mr. Dougan acknowledged in a video interview last year, it is illegal in Florida to record a telephone conversation without permission.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, Therese C. Barbera, said Mr. Dougan was “a wanted felon for cyberstalking using unsubstantiated and fabricated claims that have NO factual basis.”

In February 2016, PBSOTalk posted confidential information about thousands of police officers, federal agents and judges. The next month, F.B.I. agents and local police officers searched Mr. Dougan’s home, seizing all of his electronic equipment.

Fearing arrest, he said, he made his way to Canada and caught a flight to Moscow. He was indicted on the 21 Florida felony charges the next year.

Peddling Russia Propaganda

In Russia, Mr. Dougan refashioned himself as a kind of journalist, documenting his travels around the country, including Lake Baikal in Siberia and Crimea, the peninsula in Ukraine that Russia annexed in 2014 in violation of international law.

He posted photographs and videos from those trips on YouTube, which suspended his channel after NewsGuard’s report last year. He also appeared regularly on state media, including with two former intelligence operatives, Maria Butina , who penetrated Republican political circles, and Anna Chapman , one of 10 spies who inspired the television series “The Americans.”

In 2021, as Mr. Putin began mobilizing the military forces that would invade Ukraine, Mr. Dougan posted a video that the Kremlin would cite as one justification for its attack. In it, he claimed that the United States operated biological weapons factories in Ukraine, an accusation that Russia and its allies have pushed without ever providing evidence .

Once the war started, Mr. Dougan recounted in his written responses to questions, he traveled to Ukraine 14 times to report from the Russian side of the front lines. He appeared in Russian government hearings purporting to expose Ukraine’s transgressions, indicating some level of cooperation with the government authorities.

He has faced criticism for the reports, including in a profile in The Daily Beast, that he posted on YouTube and other platforms. Mr. Dougan has portrayed the war much as Russia’s propaganda has: as a righteous battle against neo-Nazis backed by a decadent West, led by the United States and NATO.

“The West has consistently lied about every aspect of this conflict,” he wrote. “Why does only one side get to tell their story?”

Fake News Sites in the U.S.

In April 2021, Mr. Dougan revived a website called DC Weekly, which had been created four years earlier and published fake articles about the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. According to a report last December by Clemson’s Media Forensics Hub, the domain and internet protocol address were shared by PBSOTalk and Mr. Dougan’s personal website, as well as two marketing books he wrote in exile and a security firm he operated, Falcon Eye Tech, which offered “offshore security monitoring services.”

After Russia’s assault on Ukraine began in 2022, the site carried articles about the war.

Then, last August, the site began to publish articles based on elaborate fabrications that the Western government officials and disinformation researchers said came from Russia’s propaganda units. They often appeared first in videos or audio recordings on obscure X accounts or YouTube channels, then spread to sites like DC Weekly and then to Russian state media as if they were authentic accusations, a process researchers call “narrative laundering.”

The baseless narratives included claims that relatives or cronies of Ukraine’s leader secretly bought luxury properties, yachts or jewelry, and that Prince Andrew, the brother of King Charles III of Britain, had abducted and abused children during a secret visit to Ukraine.

Dozens of new sites have appeared in recent months. They included ones made to look like local news outlets: The Chicago Chronicle, The Miami Chronicle, The Boston Times, The Flagstaff Post and The Houston Post. Some hijacked names of actual news organizations, like The San Francisco Chronicle, or approximated them, in the case of one called The New York News Daily.

When The New York Times reported on the new sites in March, DC Weekly published a lengthy response in a stilted style that indicated the use of artificial intelligence. It was written under the name Jessica Devlin, one of the fictitious journalists on the site. “I’m not a shadowy foreign actor,” the article said.

At the end, the article invited media inquiries at an email address with the domain Falcon Eye Tech.

Two days later, Mr. Dougan answered.

103 New Sites in Two Days

Mr. Dougan, who became a Russian citizen last year and voted in the country’s presidential election in March, said in his messages to The Times that he made a living by selling security devices he designed for a manufacturer in China. He denied being paid by any Russian authorities, claiming he funds his activities himself.

His friend Mr. Lambiet, a private investigator and former journalist, said he considered Mr. Dougan a good man but cautioned that Mr. Dougan had a propensity to make things up. “He’s like a Russian disinformation campaign: It’s hard to know what’s true and what’s not,” he said.

As evidence of Mr. Dougan’s role in the news sites has emerged, he has shifted tactics. Recorded Future, the threat intelligence company, released a report this month that detailed his ties to agencies linked to the Russian disinformation. The report documented the extensive use of A.I., which one of the company’s researchers, Clément Briens, estimated made Mr. Dougan’s work far cheaper than hiring a troll army.

At the time, Recorded Future identified 57 domains that Mr. Dougan had created. In a two-day span after the report was published, 103 new sites appeared, all on a server in California.

“He’s trying to obfuscate the Russian links,” Mr. Briens said.

Mr. Dougan at times treats his activities as a game of cat and mouse. He spent months engaging with a researcher at NewsGuard, McKenzie Sadeghi, revealing details of his life in Moscow while mocking her boss, Mr. Brill.

“He seemed to be toying with me, both to elicit my responses and, it seemed, to show off his talent for global online mischief, without actually admitting anything,” she wrote in the report published on Wednesday.

While Mr. Dougan’s sites have focused on Russian narratives about the war in Ukraine, the researchers and government officials say he has laid the foundation for interference in the unusually large confluence of elections taking place around the world this year.

This suggests a “risk of an expanded operation scope in the near future, potentially targeting diverse audiences and democratic systems in Europe and other Western nations for various strategic objectives,” the diplomatic service of the European Union wrote in a report last month when the network included only 23 websites.

In recent weeks, the sites have included themes that seem intended to stoke the partisan fires in the United States before November’s presidential election.

Last month, articles appeared on two of Mr. Dougan’s newer fake sites, The Houston Post and The Flagstaff Post, detailing a baseless claim that the F.B.I. had planted an eavesdropping device in Mr. Trump’s office at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

Some of the new sites have names, like Right Review and Red State Report, that suggest a conservative political bent. In April, a site that researchers also linked to Mr. Dougan offered “major cryptocurrency rewards” for leaks of information about American officials, singling out two prosecutors and a judge involved in the criminal cases against Mr. Trump.

“If the site was mine,” he wrote in response to a question about it, “I would want people to give documents on any dirty politician, Republican, Democrat or other.”
