The Perfect Itinerary for a Long Weekend

trunk bay st john excursion

My absolute best friend in the world is visiting for the first time next week, and I could not be more excited! I’ve been busy playing travel agent for his family, and I am confident that I have created the perfect long weekend itinerary for them. With flights being so inexpensive right now, it’s the perfect time to book a last-minute, long weekend trip to see us! And if you are lucky enough to be able to pull off a quick visit, here is a great little itinerary to follow! (Click here to read a recent post about all of the cheap airfare that’s currently available.)

Day 1: Arrival Day (Thursday)

Your first travel day is never fun, Chances are you woke up sometime in the middle of the night to make it to the airport for your early morning flight. The good news is that most flights arrive in the early afternoon, so you can still have fun on arrival day.

I suggest not planning anything too grueling on arrival day because you will undoubtedly be tired from the flight. Luckily happy hour and sunset have never been categorized as grueling, so add them to the list of must-dos for day one! When you arrive on St. John, check in to your hotel, villa or condo, freshen up and then head right to the beach in Cruz Bay. Belly up to the bar or grab a seat in the sand, and enjoy the good ‘ole Caribbean life. My friends are staying at The Grande Retreat at Grande Bay next week. It’s a perfect location for those that want to be close to all of the action. The Grande Retreat is a beautiful, three-bedroom unit that was purchased by frequent tour guests of mine, who I am now lucky enough to call friends. Click here to check it out!

Day 2: (Friday)

St. John is home to the best beach in the world , so that is where you should spend your first full day on island (provided there aren’t too many cruise ships over in St. Thomas that day – Click here to learn more about the cruise ships and how they can impact St. John ). Trunk Bay is a quick 15-minute drive from Cruz Bay. Parking is extremely limited, so this is a beach that’s best to taxi to. It’s the only beach with an entry fee – just $5 per person, credit cards only – and it is well worth the price. Happy hour starts in the morning at Trunk Bay, so get there early if day drinking is on your agenda!

trunk bay st john excursion

Trunk Bay has a great lunch spot, a full bar, snorkel and chair rentals, showers, and restrooms. It’s also home to the world’s only (I think!) underwater snorkeling trail. The trail is a bit of a swim, so I recommend bringing a noodle or a life vest along for the swim.

trunk bay st john excursion

Later that night, you can take a dip in your pool, enjoy a great dinner in town, or perhaps check out the sunset again. If that sounds good for you, head up to The Windmill Bar. It’s only 10 minutes from Cruz Bay, and it has some of the best sunset views on island. Taxis regularly go there around sunset time, so it’s easy to visit if you opt not to rent a car. Insider tip: They also have delicious buffalo chicken dip!

Day 3: (Saturday)

Boat days are the best days! Considering my friends have never visited the island, I figured a boat day is a must! We’re opting to stay local for this trip, so the plan is to snorkel with the turtles at Maho Bay, grab a bite at Pizza Pi, and perhaps a cocktail at Lime Out. If the water cooperates, we may even do a quick visit to Water Island, which is just off of St. Thomas.

trunk bay st john excursion

Have a nice dinner on night three. We have so many amazing restaurants to choose from. Click here to view Explore STJ’s searchable restaurant map.

Day 4: (Sunday)

Since we have two teens visiting next week, we are sending them over to St. Thomas (with their parents of course!) for a water sports day at Sapphire Resort and perhaps Coral World. Sapphire has parasailing, jet skiing and other fun motorized sports that you can’t find here in St. John. Sapphire is only a five-minute taxi ride from the Red Hook ferry, so it’s a very doable day trip.

If you prefer to spend your last full day on St. John, I would suggest visiting another one of St. John’s beautiful beaches, or perhaps take an island tour with me! Together we can explore some lesser-known spots, including secluded beaches, historical sites and so much more. You can learn more about Explore STJ’s Island Tours at www.explorestj.com/tour

trunk bay st john excursion

Relax over at Mongoose Junction that evening and get your shopping on. Mongoose has dozens of stores that sell a variety of items like hats, t-shirts, upscale clothing, ornaments, note cards, home goods and more.

Day 5: The Walk of Woe (Monday)

All good things must come to an end, right?

Enjoy a nice breakfast at either Cruz Bay Landing or High Tide before you do the walk of woe over to the ferry dock. But don’t worry, I’m pretty confident that you’ll start planning your next visit before you hit the dock in St. Thomas.

  • Trunk Bay Beach

Based on other reviews, we got there about 9am. We were the only ones there other than an Bride and Groom getting married. Make sure to bring your national park pass for a discount entry fee. The beach is beautiful. White sand that is so soft. We picked a place under a tree and put down our rented chairs and hit the water. Snorkeled and had lunch. Then relaxed before leaving in the early afternoon. It started to get more crowded around 10 or so, but still not a packed beach. We debated about going since taxi to get there, entry fee, gear rental, etc added up for two and we have seen many beaches on our trips. But so glad we went. It was a perfect day!

This a gorgeous beach, though it was rather crowded with cruise ship groups coming and going. Lovely soft sand curves gracefully around water in a palette of many shades of clear blue in a picturesque setting marked by the rocky Trunk Cay and surrounding hills. The park provides handy services with the admission fee, including showers, restrooms, picnic tables, a snack bar,and snorkeling equipment rental. The park also offers a snorkeling trail and lifeguards which is nice. However, the snorkeling was disappointing after our experience of the underwater garden at Caneel Bay. Go for the beach! Go elsewhere for snorkeling.

We were in St. John's around the time of many cruise ships in the area, and were a bit afraid of crowds. We stayed much longer than we thought we would, because it was breathtaking! The sand was so nice, and the water the perfect temperature, and depth for cooling off. As with many beaches that we saw on our trip to USVI, there is much dead coral. When we wandered out beyond the "trail" at this beach, there was a greater variety of live corral. Having food and amenities here was nice, as well. Definitely plan to put this on your "Must See" list.

I have been visiting for years, beautiful water, great sand, now have snack bar, bathrooms, some shaded areas. Amateur snorkeling trail, great for beginners and kids. If you don't have a car..this is a popular taxi drop.

If you are in the area drop what you're doing and go now. This is the most beautiful beach i've ever seen. Perfect water, perfect sand, perfect staff. You cannot go wrong.

After visiting rocky Waterlemon Bay, we were craving a day of relaxing on a sandy beach. Trunk Bay did not disappoint! We taxi'd here from Cruz Bay. The last taxis were leaving around 4:30 so keep track of time! The facilities close then too. It was nice to have facilities like bathrooms, a snack bar, and covered picnic pavilions, especially when it started to downpour! Most other beaches don't have these amenities, which makes it well worth the $5 fee. Support the parks! The sand felt so nice and the water was picture perfect. We spent a lot of time snorkeling around the trail (swim out to the buoys) and just around the cays. Spotted a barracuda and lots of tropical fish (parrot and damselfish). Bring a camera!

St John Beaches – Spotlight on Trunk Bay

Trunk Bay underwater snorkeling trail

Getting there: Taxi service is available in town. If traveling by car – you’ll take North Shore Road out of Cruz Bay. Travel along the winding road for about 2 mi and you’ll come to a scenic overlook. This is where the majority of Trunk Bay pictures are taken. Continue on down to the bottom of the hill and the entrance to Trunk is on your left – you can’t miss it.

NOTE: Because of Trunk Bay’s popularity – it’s best hit the beach early …or later in the afternoon.

Climbing five spots from 2023’s sixth position finish , Trunk Bay was most notable for its location within the bounds of the Virgin Islands National Park. Because of the area’s protected status, the loud commercial activity and large buildings that might surround other beaches are absent, allowing visitors to Trunk Bay to bask on the pristine sands.

Evaluators also took note of Trunk Bay’s geography, which provides protection from the trade winds, leaving perfectly calm waters ideal for swimming.

The 2024 list of the World's 50 Best Beaches is based on votes cast by over 1000 travel influencers and professionals, as well as a veritable army of Beach Ambassadors. The beaches were ranked along eight different criteria: how often idyllic conditions prevailed, how easy it was to enter the water, how often was the water calm, how crowded it was, what the background sounds/noise were like, whether the beach appears untouched, and what wildlife could be seen/experienced.

"Our 2024 list is a reflection of the countless days spent by our judges, Beach Ambassadors and World’s 50 Best team discovering beaches around the world," said Tine Holst, co-founder of The World's 50 Best Beaches. "Our list will help inspire travelers to leave the beaten path behind and enjoy the most stunning and relaxing beaches on earth."

Trunk Bay Beach in St. John Named No. 1 of 2024 Top 50 Beaches in the World

Trunk Bay Beach in St. John Named No. 1 of 2024 Top 50 Beaches in the World

Last Updated on May 3, 2024

Sponsored by sunscreen guru Banana Boat, we’re highlighting the best beaches in the world.

Trunk Bay, located on the Caribbean island of St. John , one of three U.S. Virgin Islands that also includes St. Thomas and St. Croix, has been voted the number one beach on the prestigious list of the World’s 50 Best Beaches. The compilation, curated by a panel of travel experts, influencers and enthusiasts worked to showcase the most breathtaking and sought-after beaches around the globe.

Of no surprise to me or my family who are frequent visitors to the U.S. Virgin Islands , St. John’s Trunk Bay garnished the number one spot in this distinguished list of sandy shores. Though we’ve been to other magnificent stretches of sand around the world that also made the top 50 list, there’s something special about Trunk Bay.

Trunk Bay is a quintessential Caribbean paradise. The crystal-clear waters set within the idyllic and protected Virgin Islands National Park are teeming with fish and its vibrant reef offers mind-boggling underwater opportunities due to its unique underwater snorkeling trail that sports a myriad of fascinating sea life and rainbow colors of fish. The sheltered location protects the area from the Caribbean trade winds resulting in calm waters ideal for swimming and families.

Now that we’ve identified the top beach in the world, let’s look at the others that also offer an incredible experience you’ll long remember. Did one or more of your favorites make this distinguished list?

 2. Cala Marilou (Sardinia)

This Italian island escape is accessible only by boat offering privacy and striking beauty. Waters vary from aquamarine to sapphire, a perfect contrast to its striking white pebble beaches.

3. Meads Bay (Anguilla)

This beach’s standout is its unique and peaceful tranquility with long, pristine stretches of white sand. The waters sport a magical shade of turquoise and sunsets here are incredible.

4. Entalula Beach (Philippines)

Renowned for its amazing seclusion, Entalula Beach offers snow-colored, sandy shores with an impressive backdrop of limestone cliffs. Its calm, crystalline waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling and exploring the vibrant coral reefs.

5. Voutoumi Beach (Greece)

One of Greece’s best-kept secrets, this stunning stretch of secluded paradise on the Ionian Sea is renowned for its deep blue waters and mix of pebbles and white sand surrounded by steep verdant hills and Cypress trees.

6. Turquoise Bay (Australia)

Located in Western Australia, Turquoise Bay lives up to its name with some of the most sparkling turquoise waters in the world ideal for snorkeling. Desert meets the sea in this underdeveloped remote location.

7. Pink Beach (Indonesia)

Yes, it’s really pink, created by a mixture of white sand and red coral fragments. The beach is part of a protected area within Komodo National Park, which helps maintain its pristine condition and supports a rich marine biodiversity, making it also ideal for snorkeling and diving.

8. Anse Georgette (Seychelles)

Anse Georgette’s remote location on Praslin Island and limited accessibility help preserve its untouched appeal, attracting those looking for a tranquil beach experience. The clear, turquoise water is often calmer than at other beaches on the island, making it amazing for swimming.

9. Green Lagoon (French Polynesia)

Celebrated for its surreal beauty, the lagoon features a stunning array of vibrant aquatic hues—from deep blues to bright turquoises—created by its shallow sandy bottom and rich coral life. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this secluded paradise is a snorkeler’s paradise.

10. Horseshoe Island (Myanmar)

Named for its unique crescent-shaped beach that curves around a vibrant, tourmaline lagoon, this is one of the last undiscovered paradises on Earth. Horseshoe Island remains largely untouched by heavy tourism providing clear, calm waters and plenty of solitude.

11. Calo Des Moro (Spain)

Situated inconspicuously on Mallorca’s southeastern coast, this is the crown jewel of the Balearics and a Mediterranean dream come true. The beach is renowned for its strikingly crystal-clear and almost always calm turquoise waters, as well as the dramatic, rugged cliffs that completely engulf the beach.

12. Le Morne Beach (Mauritius)

This stunning beach is renowned for its dramatic backdrop of the impressive Le Morne Brabant mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is known for its strong winds and waves making it popular with windsurfers and kite surfers around the world.

13. Aharen Beach (Japan)

Located on spectacular Tokashiki Island, Okinawa, this beach is celebrated for its exceptionally clear waters and soft, smooth sand. Aharen offers a tranquil setting framed by lush green hills contrastingly sharply with its bright and beautiful shoreline.

14. Lanikai Beach (Hawaii)

Lanakai Beach Oahu.

Despite its popularity, Lanikai Beach on the island of Oahu is admired for its calm and crystalline turquoise waters, fine, powdery sand, towering palms and stunning views of the Mokulua inlets offshore. Though I’ve been here numerous times, it feels semi-private and never crowded.

15. One Foot Island (Cooks Islands)

One Foot Island is a quintessential tropical escape and remote gem within the Aitutaki atoll, offering a distinctly serene beach experience. The island’s soft sandy shores and clear lagoon make this an idyllic beach setting. One of the island’s most unique features is its small post office where visitors can send postcards or have their passports stamped with the iconic One Foot Island stamp.

16. Playa Belandra (Mexico)

You have to see it to believe it. Located in La Paz, Baja, this protected beach area is also known as the “Laguna de la Colores” for its six different contrasting colors of blue and turquoise and its warm shallow pristine waters ideal for swimming and kayaking. This is definitely one of my favorites!

Playa Belandra beach in Mexico.

17. Grace Bay (Turks and Caicos)

Another dreamy stretch of sand, Grace Bay is regarded as one of the best Caribbean beaches due to its stunning simplicity and pristine conditions. You’ll find miles of soft, white sand and quintessential turquoise waters. Protected by a coral reef about a mile offshore, Grace Bay’s northwest-facing orientation ensures calm, sheltered waters perfect for families and those seeking relaxation. This is a Caribbean beauty!

18. Puinn Sand Beach (Norway)

This remote beach on Værøy, Norway, stands out for its location above the Arctic Circle, setting it apart from more conventional beaches. Despite its northern position, the stretch of sand enjoys continuous daylight during the summer months thanks to the midnight sun. Views from this picturesque landscape are amazing from atop Håen Mountain.

19. Cala Gororitz (Italy)

Created by a landslide in 1962, Cala Goloritzé is renowned for its striking 143-metre-tall limestone pinnacle that towers high above the cove. Situated on the eastern coast of Sardinia, this beach is accessible only by a hike or by boat, and protected by regulations that require all boats to stay beyond a rope 200 meters from the shore. The azure blue waters are shallow and clear, making it ideal for swimming.

20. Anchor Bay Beach (Australia)

This heavenly beach tucked away within a national park and directly on the Great Barrier Reef is accessible only by small aircraft or your own boat. Located on Lizard Island in Queenstown, the beach offers soft white sandy, crystalline waters and unmatched snorkeling and diving around its vibrant coral reefs offering an impressive diversity of marine life.

Others on the list include:

Freedom Beach Phuket.

21. Gardner Bay (Ecuador) – a sea lion heaven protected as part of the Galapagos National Park.

22. Anse Source D’Argent (Seychelles) – one of the most photographed, majestic beaches in the world.

23. Freedom Beach (Thailand) – a Phuket hidden gem accessible only by boat or a jungle trek.

20 Best Things to Do on St. John — From an Underwater Trail to a Floating Taco Bar

These are the best things to do on St. John, according to experts.

The U.S. Virgin Islands are home to three main islands, each with a surprisingly distinct feel: St. Thomas is thoroughly cosmopolitan, and St. Croix boasts incredible food and laid-back beaches, but what of tiny St. John? Accessible only by boat — or even better, private yacht — the tiny island of St. John is sometimes known as the "Beverly Hills of the Caribbean."

Tongue-in-cheek moniker aside, St. John's true richness lies in both its human-made luxuries and its natural ones. Most of the island is protected as part of the Virgin Islands National Park, hiding white-sand beaches, underwater snorkeling trails, and even age-old petroglyphs among miles of hiking trails and unforgettable scenery. With destinations like St. John, it's no wonder that the U.S. Virgin Islands made T+L's list of the  50 best places to travel in 2023 .

We spoke with local experts from the United States Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, Onefinestay, and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) about St. John, and they all said the same thing: This small yet spectacular island boasts an incredible array of things to do. Here are their recommendations for the best things to do on St. John.

Related:  T+L's Guide to St. John

Explore Virgin Islands National Park.

Virgin Islands National Park is the jewel of St. John and the highlight of any visit to the island. 30 different hiking trails zigzag through the park and cut through its numerous ecosystems, while its white-sand beaches, like the world-famous Trunk Bay, are some of the most popular destinations on the island. Whether you're interested in visiting historic sites, snorkeling at colorful reefs, or enjoying a relaxing beach day in paradise, you could easily spend your entire trip to St. John exploring just within the bounds of the park.

Related:   T+L's Guide to Visiting Virgin Islands National Park

Celebrate St. John Carnival.

The beloved  St. John Carnival  simultaneously celebrates the founding of the United States on July 4, 1776 and the abolition of slavery on July 3, 1848, bringing music, dance, food, and plenty of fanfare across the island. While the celebrations tend to be smaller than those on neighboring St. Croix and St. Thomas, they're enough to keep even the most active visitor busy and worth a summertime trip to the island. It's one of the best ways to experience "the island's rich cultural tapestry," says Joseph Boschulte, commissioner of tourism for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Spot Taino petroglyphs.

There's no need to visit a museum in St. John. Etched in a rock face at the base of a plunging waterfall, age-old petroglyphs carved by the Taino Indigenous peoples native to the island offer a little-seen window into St. John's rich past. The Reef Bay Trail that takes visitors to the site cuts past four former sugar plantations, making it a historical walking tour among some of the island's most impressive landscapes.

Relax at a private villa.

There are no oversized all-inclusive resorts to speak of on St. John; instead, renting a villa is the most popular accommodation choice for visitors.  Onefinestay  boasts over 40 private villas for rent on St. John, including everything from intimate cottages with ocean views to palatial estates with on-site spas. The concierge team at Onefinestay sets it apart and can guide guests' itineraries and arrange for local experiences to help take all the stress out of planning a trip.

Visit a floating taco bar.

What could be better than snacking on tacos from the warm waters of the Caribbean? "Only available via boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard,  Lime Out  is situated in the middle of Coral Bay on a floating pontoon. This delectable option also has underwater seats to keep guests afloat while enjoying their tasty tacos and a selection of draft beer and beverages," shares Michele Bayens, director of concierge services of Onefinestay. It's just as dreamy as it sounds.

Shop at Wharfside Village in Cruz Bay.

Some of the best shopping in St. John can be found at Wharfside Village, steps away from the harbor in the island's largest town of Cruz Bay. After an afternoon of perusing the shops, stop for bites at nearby Johnny Lime, or visit High Tide Bar & Seafood Grill for the island's best conch fritters. Coral Bay and Mongoose Junction are the island's other shopping destinations.

Dive at Eagle Shoals.

"The protected waters in Virgin Islands National Park make St. John a paradise for divers looking for beautiful wildlife," says Kristina Leadbeater from  PADI . Eagle Shoals is a memorable dive site, complete with a dramatic cave known as the Cathedral. The cave and surrounding extensions of reefs hold incredible wildlife, including tropical fish, manta rays, and even an occasional shark.

Follow a snorkeling trail at Trunk Bay.

St. John has plenty to offer beneath the waves, even for those who aren't divers. Trunk Bay's  Coral Reef Underwater Park Trail  is a 650-foot-long sea trail complete with underwater plaques identifying the endless corals, plants, fish, and turtles that inhabit these crystalline waters for the most informative swim of your life.

Snorkeling aside, stretching out on the pristine sands of Trunk Bay is a highlight of any visit to the island. "There are beautiful beaches, and then there are beaches that leave you speechless," lauds Rondel Holder for T+L of what is considered among the  best beaches in the Caribbean .

Try local island dishes.

St. Croix may earn the title of the culinary capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, but St. John has some hidden gastronomic gems that include the best of the flavors of the Caribbean. Roadside spots serve up favorites like barbeque and the national dish of fish and fungi. With a daily rotating menu of island favorites like curried goat, oxtail, or the catch of the day,  Ekaete Pink Corner  feels and tastes as local as it gets.

Camp on the beach.

Travelers looking to get closer to nature in St. John can skip the luxe villa for an experience only steps from the waves and under the stars.  Cinnamon Bay Beach & Campground  is the only location within Virgin Islands National Park that permits camping, though they also offer cottages and fully equipped eco-tents, plus a restaurant and food truck, for those visitors looking for a few simple luxuries.

Visit the historic Annaberg Sugar Plantation.

The history of the U.S. Virgin Islands is marked by its reliance on the labor of enslaved peoples in its sugarcane fields. The ruins of  Annaberg Sugar Plantation , first established in 1722, offer a peek at both the daily lives of the enslaved people who lived here and the vital role of sugar in the island's economy. Open daily and administered by the National Park Service, the plantation offers free entry to all.

Snorkel at a unique wreck site.

Dozens of beaches dot the island of St. John, but local experts recommend Cinnamon Bay Beach for snorkelers. "I like to recommend [Cinnamon Bay Beach] due to its unique snorkeling options. A substantial table reef can be found in five to 15 feet of water if you go snorkeling off the eastern end of the beach. There's an interesting submerged aircraft wreckage here — it's little more than a small plane's motor, prop, and section of wing, but in eight feet or less of shallow water, it's an interesting sight!" says Bayens.

Explore the island on foot.

Miles of trails crisscross St. John, making the island a paradise for avid hikers and beginners alike. Lind Point Trail offers impressive vistas on its 2.3-mile route from Cruz Bay to Salomon Beach and Honeymoon Beach. Ram Head Trail is a bit more challenging but offers even more spectacular views. Get an early start to avoid the heat, and bring a bathing suit to enjoy where the trail meets the sea.

Enjoy live music at Miss Lucy's.

Thursday nights are the perfect time to visit family-owned beachfront staple  Miss Lucy's  in Coral Bay thanks to live music that draws locals and visitors alike. Well known for favorite island dishes like conch fritters and Callaloo soup, Miss Lucy's also serves up a signature grouper Reuben sandwich worth crossing the island for.

Sip a painkiller cocktail.

The painkiller is a staple on nearly every cocktail menu on St. John. While the original  painkiller cocktail  was created on the island of Jost Van Dyke in the neighboring British Virgin Islands, this must-try beverage features classic tropical flavors like coconut, orange, and pineapple. The original recipe calls for the dark, spiced Pusser's Rum, so make sure to request it with your order.

Spot sea turtles at Maho Bay Beach.

With so much of the shoreline of St. John protected as part of Virgin Islands National Park, the beaches on St. John are a haven for multiple species of turtles. Snorkelers and divers are often lucky enough to share a swim with a turtle or two, but for the best chance of spotting these gentle giants, head to Maho Bay Beach. Beds of seagrass make the waters of the bay particularly appealing to turtles, while stunning white sand and nearby food and drink vendors make it among the most beloved beaches on the island.

Sail around St. John — and beyond.

Sunset sails featuring tasty bites and drinks are some of the most popular experiences for travelers visiting St. John, while daytime excursions offer easy access to the island's best beaches and hard-to-reach snorkel and dive sites. Full-day sails also take passengers to neighboring islands, including St. Thomas and British Virgin Islands destinations like Jost Van Dyke.

Meditate with ocean views.

Stunning vistas of the Caribbean from the historic Peace Hill Windmill make for the perfect spot for a sunset meditation session, offered weekly on Sundays at 5:45 p.m. Hike or drive along North Shore Road to reach the spot or take the free shuttles from the Cruz Bay ferry dock and the Hawksnest parking lot.

Catch an exhibit at Bajo El Sol.

The eclectic  Bajo El Sol  in Mongoose Junction is equal parts gallery, bookstore, cafe, and event space that highlights the best of the local art scene in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Stop by to catch a new exhibit or a poetry reading, or come back for happy hour when the space converts into a rum and cocktail bar.

Get a bird's-eye view on North Shore Road.

Taxis in St. John can be prohibitively expensive, costing up to $30 per passenger for even a short drive, so consider renting a car if you're looking to explore the island. Take advantage of the freedom and head to North Shore Road for some of St. John's best scenic views. Vistas overlooking Trunk Bay, Maho Bay, and Caneel Bay make for an unforgettable drive.

ST. JOHN US VIRGIN ISLANDS BY SAFARI BUS

Story and photos by Barb & Ron Kroll

Every year, cruise ships visit St. Thomas more than a 1,000 times. Passengers who've seen the busy island on previous trips have a serene alternative: St. John.

The smallest of the three major US Virgin Islands is only a 45-minute ferry ride from Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas. But is it possible to experience the highlights of this 15-kilometre-long island in just a half-day?

Undoubtedly yes, especially if your guide is Wesley. He'll not only introduce you to the sights, but also to bush medicine, island lore and local wildlife.

Virgin Islands National Park

Wesley's safari bus tours begin by the ferry dock in the capital, Cruz Bay. A dozen of us scramble into the open-sided vehicle and sit on four padded benches. Wesley greets us with a broad smile, then climbs into the driver's cab and talks to us through a loud speaker.

"Our first stop is the bathroom," he says, stopping a minute later in front of a large, clean public washroom. "St. John is two-thirds National Park. Once we leave Cruz Bay, you'll find only outhouses and big trees."

Cruz Bay tour

Business done, we begin our tour of the capital. "There are nine churches, three gas stations, two banks and an elementary school in Cruz Bay," explains Wesley. We note he's driving British-style, on the left-side of the road, but the steering wheel is on the left, as in North America. "It's easier to talk to pedestrians, this way," he adds, waving to friends as he speaks.

The population, he tells us, is 3,500 and many of them are driving or walking on the town's narrow streets. "Our island is about the same size as Manhattan," he notes, "but when we're stuck in gridlock, our view is better than theirs."

Termite nests and calabash trees

Traffic thins after we leave town on the narrow but paved Centerline Road. Wesley pulls the bus over so we can photograph termite nests that look like black growths on the trees.

Pointing to a shrub nearby, he says: "We lather up the juice from this bush and put it on our skin to dry up rashes and heal cuts. Feel how rough the leaves are. They make great scouring pads."

He then points out a calabash tree. "We carve the dried fruit into bowls, which we stack like Tupperware, or make them into purses or maracas."

Soursop and sugar cane

Reaching into his cab, he pulls out a couple of the musical instruments and shakes them as he chants: "Who's driving the bus?" Motioning for us to respond, he joins us: "Wesley's driving the bus." As we sing along, a flock of tiny guinea hens skitters across the road.

He then shows us the prickly green fruit of the soursop tree. "The juice makes a great drink," he says. "You can also dry the leaves and brew them into a tea to help you sleep. My grandfather, who's 93, drinks lots of it. He has 27 children," he adds, leaving it up to us to attribute any aphrodisiac properties to the tea.

As we drive towards the centre of the island, Wesley explains that during the 18th and 19th centuries, more than 2,000 slaves worked the 88 sugar factories on St. John. With the abolition of slavery, in 1848, and the production of less expensive sugar from sugar beets, the plantations gave way to subsistence farming and fishing.

"In 1917, the Danish government, which owned the island for 200 years, sold it along with St. Thomas and St. Croix, to the US government for 25 million dollars,v says Wesley. We think of our cruise ship, the Grand Princess, which cost 18 times that amount — US$450 million.

Laurance Rockefeller gift

Looking out over the dramatic progression of craggy mountains, and dense vegetation that encroaches on both sides of the road, we quietly thank Laurance Rockefeller. Hoping to preserve its unspoiled beauty, the philanthropist purchased and donated 2,000 hectares of the land to the federal government.

In 1956, President Eisenhower created the Virgin Islands National Park. Since then, it's grown to over 5,000 hectares, with one-third of it encompassing coral reefs, beaches, mangroves and seagrass beds.

"I'll turn on the air-conditioning," laughs Wesley as he snakes the vehicle up Bordeaux Mountain. At 390 metres, we're at the highest point in St. John — and the coolest. We get out and admire the emerald mountains and sapphire Coral Bay.

Mango sherbet

A tin-roofed ice cream stand sells yummy mango sherbet. Naturally Beautiful, an adjoining shop, displays island souvenirs: bright batik tropical dresses, small burlap bags of spiced coffee, jars of star fruit sauce and chocolate coconut rum cake.

Shopping and snacking done, we hop back in the bus for the serpentine downward journey towards the north coast. Wesley plays a tape of Amazing Grace over the speaker. We hope the brakes work. They do, as we discover when a small, furry animal streaks out from the forest, crossing the road in front of us.

Mongooses and wild donkeys

"It's a mongoose," says Wesley. "The Danes brought them here from India when rats were devastating the sugar cane crop. There was only one problem. The mongoose forages during the day, while the rat feeds at night. They never saw each other, so both thrived. So do wild donkeys."

The St. John Guidebook, which we picked up free-of-charge at the tourist information bureau next to the safari bus parking lot, elaborates: "National Park staff counted 400 wild asses on the island. They can be pests, wandering through campgrounds and yards looking for snacks. If approached, they can be nasty and bite. They have bad breath too!"

Wesley stops the vehicle, disappears into the jungle, and returns with a handful of leaves. Crushing them, we sniff the fragrant bay leaves appreciatively. "Islanders extract the oil and make cologne and bay rum with it," he tells us.

Annaberg Sugar Mill

Continuing our drive, we arrive at the Annaberg Sugar Mill. Wesley introduces us to Deanna Somerville, a National Parks ranger, who explains that the ruins are remnants of the last surviving sugar plantation on the island.

It takes about 30 minutes to stroll along the circular route. Wesley hands us a tin of bug spray before we depart. We're thankful, because hordes of hungry no-see-ums inhabit the area.

A self-guided trail map describes 18 ruins, ranging from slave quarters to the boiling bench where slaves boiled cane juice into crude brown sugar. The best preserved building is the windmill, which was built in 1810. On one side, there's a bread oven; on the other, an impressive view of Leinster Bay and the British Virgin Islands.

Nature trails and petroglyphs

There are 22 self-guided nature trails in the National Park, according to Somerville. The best known trail is the ranger-guided five-kilometre Reef Bay Hike. It descends through subtropical vegetation, past Danish ruins and petroglyphs created by the original Arawak inhabitants.

We hop back on the safari bus for the return trip to Cruz Bay along the Northshore Road. One pristine palm-fringed bay follows another. Maho Bay features cabins strung together, like Chinese lanterns, with elevated wooden walkways through the woods. Harmony Studios, the world's first luxury resort, which operates solely on solar and wind power, is also here. The spacious guesthouses were built from recycled materials.

There's a more traditional National Park campground and a self-guided trail at postcard-pretty Cinnamon Bay. Descending a few more elastic band curves, we reach Trunk Bay, famous for its underwater snorkelling trail.

Alan Alda and Carol Burnett

Equally pretty, but less crowded, is Hawksnest Bay, just down the road. "Hawksbill turtles come here to lay their eggs between mid-July and mid-December," notes Wesley. "If the scenery looks familiar, it's because you may have seen it in Four Seasons . In the movie, Alan Alda and Carol Burnett got stuck here on the reef and went skinny dipping."

Wesley knows that we can't resist the bathtub-warm water and sugar-sand beach. He stops long enough for us to have a quick swim.

A beach for every day of the week

Back on the safari bus, we skirt Caneel Bay, which boasts seven beaches. "One for every day of the week," quips Wesley. The jewel of the 70-hectare peninsula is the luxurious Caneel Bay Hotel, built by Rockefeller in the 1950s. It beckons from manicured lawns and gardens, but we have no time to stop. We resolve to return and spend more time in St. John.

Grazing goats greet us on the outskirts of Cruz Bay. In town, Wesley points out Mongoose Junction, a shopping arcade housed in stone buildings reminiscent of old Danish architecture.

As he pulls into the parking lot, he chants: "Who's driving the bus?" In unison, we sing back: "Wesley's driving the bus."

He turns around and flashes a dazzling grin.
